Degree of polarization degradation due to intrachannel nonlinearity with different bit-rates and modulation formats is experimentally and numerically investigated. The degradation becomes obvious in 40 Gbit/s transmission, especially for intensity-modulated signals. The generation of high-order Brillouin Stokes is experimentally demonstrated in 300 km all-Raman transmission with normal Raman pumps and without mirror reflection, and a longest ever fiber laser is implemented at the same time. By recycling the residual pump power, performance improvements of parallel type C + L band erbium-doped fiber amplifier are demonstrated. For C-band branch, the average gain and noise figure are enhanced by 2.0 dB and decreased by 1.1 dB, respectively. Whereas for L-band branch, the average gain is raised by 0.5 dB and noise figure is lower by 0.3 dB. Bit error rate performance is verified with negligible power penalty of 0.3 dB for the proposed C + L band EDFA. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We introduce a novel technique to monitor the optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) using a Mach–Zehnder interferometer. The error of the novel method is less than 0.5 dB when the OSNR is between 10 and 40 dB in the best working case. In practice, the dynamic range reduces to 10–30 dB because of the influence of polarization, crosstalk, and signal bit rate.
