The protective effect of quercetin on docetaxel - an anticancer agent - induced testicular damage in rats was investigated. Thirty-two rats were randomly divided into four groups: group 1 - control, carrier solutions were given; group 2 - quarcetin 20 mg kg−1 day−1 was given orally; group 3 - docetaxel 5 mg kg−1 was given intraperitoneally as single dose; group 4 - docetaxel and quarcetin were given together. The histopathological changes; the specific biochemical markers, including antioxidants; and the sperm characteristics were evaluated. Docetaxel caused a significant increase in TBARS level and a significant decrease in SOD, GPX, CAT and GSH levels in the testicular tissues compared with the control group, whereas quercetin led to a significant decrease in lipid peroxidation, which was caused by docetaxel, via reducing TBARS level and increasing the levels of SOD, CAT, GPX and GSH. In addition, after docetaxel administration, sperm motility, sperm concentration, testicular and epididymis weights were significantly decreased and abnormal sperm rate and histopathological changes were increased. However, these effects of docetaxel on sperm parameters, histological changes and the tissue weights were eliminated by quercetin treatment. Our results show that the administration of docetaxel induced the testicular damage (oxidative stress, testes tissue damage and sperm parameters), and quercetin prevented docetaxel-induced testicular damage in rats. Several studies have suggested that male infertility and testicular cancer may have common aetiological factors. Scrotal ultrasonography (US) has an important role in the diagnosis of testicular tumours when not palpable by physical examination. In this study, we present two infertile men referred to our clinic. Patients were evaluated by a detailed physical examination, semen analyses and hormonal assessment. Both patients underwent scrotal US examination. Semen analysis of the patients revealed oligoasthenospermia in both patients. Scrotal US revealed hypoechoic masses in the left and right testes of both patients, which were nonpalpable by physical examination. Scrotal exploration and subsequent orchidectomy were performed. Histopathological examination revealed mixed germ cell tumour and Sertoli–Leydig cell tumour in case 1 and case 2 respectively. With these cases, we discussed the role of scrotal US in the routine diagnostic evaluation of infertile men. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to assess quantitative and qualitative alterations in the carrier rate of Candida spp. in south-eastern Turkey among adolescents, and to investigate the effect of fixed orthodontic appliances on the Candida count in a 1-year follow-up study. In the first phase of the study, the oral Candida carriage rate of 72 patients was evaluated. Samples were collected from the dorsal surface of the tongue, the mid-palate and saliva. In the second phase of the study, 42 patients who were determined to be carriers of oral Candida were treated with fixed orthodontic appliances, and from these patients a second set of samples were collected from the saliva and the orthodontic brace surfaces of eight teeth adjacent to the enamel surfaces. The saliva samples were collected before and during orthodontic treatment at 1st, 6th and 12th month, and samples from the braces were collected during the 1st, 6th and 12th month of treatment. Forty-two of the 72 patients (58.5%) were oral Candida carriers. The distribution of Candida spp. in these patients was as follows: (i) Candida albicans was identified in 31 patients (73.8%), (ii) C. tropicalis, C. krusei and C. kefyr were found in three patients each (7.14%) and (iii) C. parapsilosis occurred in two patients (4.76%). During orthodontic treatment, the micro-organism count increased both in the saliva and on tooth surfaces. The results indicate that the prevalence of oral Candida spp. is high in young adults in south-eastern Turkey and that the Candida counts increase when braces are involved. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims: To investigate the value of α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), an indicator of stellate cell activation, in predicting fibrosis in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients. Methods and results: The liver biopsy specimens of 30 patients with a clinical diagnosis of CHB were obtained before treatment and scored by Knodell's histological activity index. The specimens were then immunohisto-chemic ally stained with α-SMA and semiquantitatively evaluated. Fibrosis and the immunoreactivity of α-SMA in the periportal, perisinusoidal and pericentral areas were compared. Fibrosis and necroinflammatory activity in CHB patients were significantly correlated (P = 0.022). Furthermore, the degree of α-SMA expression and the scores of fibrosis (in periportal, perisinusoidal and pericentral areas) were highly correlated (P = 0.000, 0.001, 0.000, respectively). Conclusions: In liver biopsy samples, α-SMA may prove to be a valuable marker in the evaluation of stellate cell activation and fibrosis progression and an early indicator of the development of fibrosis. The incidence and types of tinea capitis in 234 children aged 1–12 referred to our laboratory with a preliminary diagnosis of tinea capitis infection in the past 5 years were investigated. Tinea capitis was determined in 149 (63.7%) of these patients, of which agents grew in culture in 124 (83.2%). The most frequently isolated agents, in order of frequency, are as follows:Trichophyton violaceum(43.6%),Microsporum canis(37.9%),T. mentagrophytes(8.1%) andT. verrucosum(4.8%). This study was undertaken to investigate the protective effects of melatonin against formaldehyde-induced neurotoxicity in prefrontal cortex of rats. For this purpose, 21 male Wistar rats were divided into three groups. The rats in Group I were used as a control, while the rats in Group II were injected every other day with formaldehyde. The rats in Group III received melatonin daily while exposed to formaldehyde. At the end of 14-day experimental period, all rats were killed by decapitation. The brains of the rats were removed and the prefrontal cortex tissues were obtained from all brain specimens. Some of the prefrontal cortex tissue specimens were used for determination of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. The remaining prefrontal cortex tissue specimens were used for immunohistochemical evaluation. The levels of SOD and GSH-Px were significantly decreased, and MDA levels, were significantly increased in rats treated with formaldehyde compared with those of the controls. In the immunohistochemical evaluation of this group, apoptotic cells were observed. However, increased SOD and GSH-Px enzyme activities, and decreased MDA levels, were detected in the rats administered melatonin while exposed to formaldehyde. Furthermore, apoptotic changes caused by formaldehyde were decreased in these rats. The aim of this study was to examine the neurotoxicity of formaldehyde on prefrontal cortex and the protective effects of omega-3 essential fatty acids against these toxic effects. For this purpose, 21 male Wistar rats were divided into three groups. The rats in group I comprised the controls, while the rats in group II were injected every other day with formaldehyde (FA). The rats in group III received omega-3 fatty acids daily while exposed to formaldehyde. At the end of the 14-day experimental period, all rats were killed by decapitation. The brains of the rats were removed and the prefrontal cortex tissues were obtained from all brain specimens. Some of the prefrontal cortex tissue specimens were used for determination of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. The remaining prefrontal cortex tissue specimens were used for light microscopic and immunohistochemical evaluation. The levels of SOD and GSH-Px were significantly decreased, and MDA levels were significantly increased in rats treated with formaldehyde compared with those of the controls. Furthermore, in the microscopic examination of this group, formation of apoptotic bodies, pycnotic cells, and apoptotic cells including nuclear fragmentation and membrane budding were observed. However, increased SOD and GSH-Px enzyme activities, and decreased MDA levels were detected in the rats administered omega-3 fatty acids while exposed to formaldehyde. Additionally, cellular damage caused by formaldehyde was decreased, and structural appearance was similar to that of the control rats in this group. The biochemical and histological findings observed in all groups were also confirmed by immunohistochemical evaluation.
