The relative importance of oceanic modes to global surface air temperature (SAT) and terrestrial precipitation during 1934–2020 was investigated using a variety of statistical and dynamical system methods. Through singular spectrum analysis, we present the distribution of decadal (10–20‐year), multidecadal (20–50‐year), and secular (>50‐year) variabilities of global SAT and terrestrial precipitation anomalies. Three sea surface temperature modes were identified by singular value decomposition that affect the low‐frequency variabilities of global SAT and terrestrial precipitation anomalies—namely, global warming (GW), the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation (IPO), and the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO). The relative importance GW, the IPO, and the AMO in SAT and terrestrial precipitation was obtained through a normalized multivariate information flow analysis. Besides a high information flow percentage (60%) from GW to global SAT, especially over the northern Indian Ocean and tropical West Pacific, information flow from the AMO to the northwestern Pacific was also found. In terms of terrestrial precipitation, a large area with a wet trend was found over Eurasia at mid‐to‐high latitudes, and this trend was especially remarkable in the boreal winter half‐year (November–April), as compared with that in the boreal summer half‐year (May–October). By employing artificial neutral networks with a self‐organized map to cluster the key patterns of vertically integrated water vapour flux, we found that the synoptic circulation related to the wet trend is characterized by westerly flow that transports water vapour from the northeastern Atlantic to Eurasia, which is favourable for precipitation there both in the boreal winter and summer half‐year. The regional amplitude and phase characteristics of surface (2 m) air temperature (SAT) annual cycle (AC) over the Northern Hemisphere land area are analysed by the clustering method for the period 1953–2018. The five clusters are found in the nonlinear changes of AC amplitude and the six clusters are found in the AC phase. The spatial distributions of clusters are not the same for amplitude and phase, but the similarity is that both the amplitude and phase have remarkably different trends in the mainland of Eurasia and North America, even though these two regions locate over the similar latitudinal zone. Descending trends of AC amplitude are found for the whole period 1953–2018 in most areas, except in and around Greenland. However, when checking the nonlinear variation and making a piece‐wise linear fit, the abnormal increasing trend (stronger seasonality) appears in the major part of Eurasia after the year 1990. The comparisons of surface radiation fluxes in Eurasia and North America indicate that the long‐term reduction of the reflection and absorption of clouds and aerosols with the declined surface albedo after 1980–1985 may lead to the amplitude amplification after 1990 in Eurasia. In contrast, the variation of surface radiation in North America remains unchanged, where the decreasing trend of amplitude may result from other causes. The overall phase trend is increasing (toward earlier season), but in North America after 1990, the phase shift becomes delayed. The two dominant patterns of the winter (December–February) intraseasonal surface air temperature (SAT) over central Asia is derived by empirical orthogonal function analysis, with the first (mode 1) featuring a regional monopole and the second (mode 2) featuring a northwest–southeast‐orientated dipole. Mode 1 is characterized with warmer (colder) Arctic and colder (warmer) Eurasia along with an anomalous high (low) over the Ural Mountains, while mode 2 is characterized with northwest–southeast dipole over Eurasia along with wave train‐like atmospheric circulation anomalies from the western Atlantic to Asia. Whether the two intraseasonal modes are modulated by lower‐boundary forcing is then investigated, and the results suggest that mode 1 is significantly modulated by sea ice concentration over the Greenland Sea, but by central‐Pacific ENSO for mode 2. Finally, the underlying mechanisms are diagnosed, and the results suggest that the diabatic heating related with decreased sea ice in Greenland Sea induce a positive height anomaly over Urals which favours the formation of Ural blocking and therefore tends to intensify the occurrence of mode 1. Also, central‐Pacific El Niño excites the Pacific–North American teleconnection, which alters North Atlantic subtropical jet extension, favours intensified energy conversion to intraseasonal wave train and subsequently intensifies the occurrence of mode 2. In winter 2020/2021, several episodes of cold air outbreaks have wreaked havoc across much of China, resulting in exceptionally low temperatures over northern‐to‐southeastern China. Our analysis shows that the anomalous circulation leading to the cold wave in China was characterized as: (a) a strengthening of the Siberian high, (b) a deepening of the East Asian trough, and (c) a weakening of the stratospheric polar vortex. Prior to the winter, in summer and autumn, the largest sea ice loss along the Siberian coast was observed. We therefore address the question whether the substantial sea ice loss has contributed to the cold wave. First, applying singular value decomposition (SVD) analysis, we find strong coherence between the autumn Arctic sea ice coverage and temperatures over the central‐to‐east Asian region with the sea ice component (SVD1_SIC) reaching a record high in 2020 and displaying a decadal shift around 2005. Associated with both the interannual and decadal variations of the SVD1_SIC, there are similar circulation anomalies as described in (a), (b) and (c) above. Second, applying self‐organizing maps, wintertime daily air temperatures are clustered into nine nodes with Node‐1 mostly resembling "warm Arctic, cold Eurasia" pattern. The frequency of Node‐1 shows a similar decadal shift as observed in SVD_SIC1 above, with a correlation of about 0.56. Associated with Node‐1, the circulation anomalies are consistent with features highlighted in (a), (b) and (c) above. Thus, taking all the evidence into account, we conclude that the substantial sea ice loss along the Siberian coast contributed significantly to the 2020/2021 winter cold wave in China. The mechanism behind the contribution in this study highlights that the Arctic sea ice loss is favourable for certain circulation patterns on climate timescale, reinforcing disruptive chain of reactions on weather timescale, and leading to severe cold events. Based on statistical analysis using observations and idealized model simulations, previous studies have revealed the potential response of early‐winter atmospheric circulation and temperature anomalies to November Ural blocking (UB) anomalies. Using a large number of coupled simulations, this study found that the response is sensitive to the intensity of November mid‐latitude westerly jet over Eurasia. Stronger‐than‐normal November UB without a significantly weakened westerly jet could not cause significant atmospheric response in early‐winter. By contrast, stronger‐than‐normal November UB with a significantly weakened jet would be followed by a warmer Arctic‐colder Eurasia (WACE) pattern in December. The significantly weakened westerly jet favors stronger upward propagation of planetary waves, which causes stronger weakening and longer persistence of the stratospheric polar vortex. This stratospheric response persists into December and propagates downward into the troposphere interfering with planetary waves (especially wavenumber‐1). The lead‐lag UB‐WACE linkage modulated by mid‐latitude jet may have implications for sub‐seasonal predictability. This paper uses monthly surface air temperature (SAT) data from the Climatic Research Unit dataset and the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 6 multimodel ensemble simulations to investigate the variations in the annual‐mean and four seasons SAT across the Eurasian and North Africa landmasses and the possible causes. The SAT over multiple timescales has significant seasonal and regional differences. The trend, variance of decadal variation (DV), and variance of interannual variability (IV) show that the differences between Siberia and mid‐low latitudes are much larger in winter and spring than in summer and autumn. The SAT exhibits a robust warming trend over Siberia in winter (0.21–0.42°C·decade−1) than over mid–low latitudes in summer (<0.07°C·decade−1). The cause is the combined diversity effects of greenhouse gases (GHG) and anthropogenic aerosols (AA) in four seasons over different regions. The warming trend of Siberia in winter is affected by the combination of strong warming effect by GHG and the weak cooling effect by AA, and the trend of mid–low latitudes in summer is opposite. The leading modes of the DV show a consistent spatial pattern over the whole Eurasia in four seasons while the IV show a meridional dipole pattern across 40°N except in summer. The internal climate variability is the main driver of the SAT IV and DV, but the effect of anthropogenic activity and natural forcing may reinforce the IV and DV in some regions. The combined role of GHG and AA forcings can significantly enlarge the DV in many parts of Eurasia, and the AA and natural forcing have significant effect on the IV in the high latitudes. The impact of the quasi‐biennial oscillation (QBO) on the surface air temperature (SAT) in the Northern Hemisphere extratropics is investigated. It is found that the QBO, defined as 70‐hPa zonal wind in the deep tropics, is negatively correlated with the SAT over the western North Pacific in February and March. Cold temperature anomaly appears during the QBO westerly phase. Such relationship is likely mediated by the subtropical jet. During the QBO westerly phase, a horseshoe‐shaped zonal wind anomaly forms in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere and is connected to the equatorward shift of the Asia‐Pacific jet. This equatorward jet shift is accompanied by a cyclonic circulation anomaly in the subtropical North Pacific and an anticyclonic circulation anomaly over northern Eurasia in the troposphere. The resultant temperature advection brings cold air to East Asia and the western North Pacific. This regional downward coupling in February and March, which is not sensitive to El Niño‐Southern Oscillation, has become statistically significant in recent decades. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To examine the effect of the snow‐albedo feedback (SAF) on the current surface climate across terrestrial regions at mid–high latitudes, we perform a series of idealized sensitivity experiments using an atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM), in which the snow albedo is assumed to be considerably smaller than that in the control experiment. When the snow albedo is reduced, the fall and spring surface air temperatures (SATs) in northern Eurasia are considerably higher than those in the control experiment. Particularly, the spring SAT at terrestrial high latitudes rises by more than 10°C, due to low snow albedo. Despite the small surface snow albedo during both fall and spring, the fall temperature difference between the two experiments is smaller than that during spring. The feedback with the hydrological effect, which accelerates snowmelt, is either nonexistent or weak during periods of seasonally low air temperatures. This result indicates that the hydrological effect significantly influences the SAF, and different magnitudes of the hydrological effect including cloud differences are a possible source of SAF uncertainty between models. The radiative albedo effect also impacts the evolution of the snow area in central Asia and eastern Europe through changes in lateral water vapour transport. Furthermore, the experiments indicate that the cooling effect of snow on land is necessary for the strength of the Siberian High and the pattern of Arctic Oscillation, suggesting that snow cover may also significantly extend the duration of Arctic Oscillation effects. In sharp contrast to rapid global warming, the surface air temperature (SAT) in Northeast Asia (NEA) has exhibited strong cooling in June since 2010. Our results show that this cooling is a possible response to declining Bering Sea sea ice concentrations (BSICs) in March. A physical process analysis shows that decreasing BSICs provoke a south‐eastward‐propagating Rossby wave train and induce a strong anomalous anticyclone over the midlatitude Northwest Atlantic, resulting in tripolar anomalous sea surface temperature (SST) pattern with warm anomalies in the midlatitude Northwest Atlantic. These persistent tripolar SST anomalies generate a new Rossby wave across Eurasia in June, which enhances the cyclonic atmosphere circulation anomaly over NEA and leads to the cold SAT anomalies observed in this area. Correspondingly, in response to the sharp decline in BSIC in March, the NEA has exhibited an unprecedented cooling trend in June over the most recent decade. The tripolar SST pattern in the North Atlantic develops in April and May due to the downstream development of the wave train; it persists in June mainly due to the ocean memory effect and subsequently generates a new Rossby wave across Eurasia via eddy‐mediated processes, provoking a cyclonic atmospheric circulation anomaly over NEA and leading to the observed cold SAT anomalies. Accompanying the significant BSIC decline in March since 2010, the atmospheric regime and SST variations over the North Atlantic in association with the cold SAT anomalies observed in NEA in June have strengthened and thus induced strong cooling over NEA. Large‐scale cold and warm spells successively attacked North Asia (NA) and resulted in a subseasonal alternation of extreme surface air temperature (SAT) before and after 15 January 2021. Our results show the synergistic effect of annual cycle and intraseasonal oscillation component (AC and ISO) of SAT and circulation anomalies caused temperature extremes. Before 15 January 2021, an eastward‐propagating Rossby wave train strengthened the cold circulation regime with an enhanced Ural blocking high (UBH) and surface Siberian high (SH). Circulation anomalies of the negative ISO were superimposed on the counterpart of AC, which easily resulted in cold extremes via nonlinear interaction of meridional temperature gradient. After mid‐January 2021, however, weakened UBH and SH caused warm advection and spells over NA. This synergistic effect of AC and ISO anomalies in SAT accounted for most historical temperature extremes, implying that AC anomalies have important indications for subseasonal alternation of temperature extremes. During PACN (negative anomalies of ISO, PISON), a quasi‐barotropic Rossby wave train in the midlatitudes of Eurasia enhanced AC (ISO) of the UBH and SH, causing cold extremes in NA. While during the PACP and positive anomalies of ISO (PISOP), circulation anomalies like negative Arctic oscillation (AO) weakened UBH and SH, jointly resulting in warm extremes in NA. The subseasonal temperature change process in NA was mainly attributed to the conveyance of AC anomalies of meridional temperature gradient by subseasonal winds. Historical temperature extremes were almost attributed to the synergistic effect of AC and ISO of SAT anomalies, implying that the AC anomalies have important indications for subseasonal alternation of cold and warm extremes. This study investigates how El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) modulates winter cold anomalies over central Eurasia (CE) using reanalysis data during 1950–2019. It is found that ENSO can significantly influence winter air temperature over CE mainly through modulating the strength and location of the cyclonic anomaly of Ural blocking (UB) or long‐lived UB events. A strong (weak) cyclonic anomaly of UB on the southeastern (eastern) side of the Ural Mountains tends to occur over midlatitude (high‐latitude) Eurasia during La Niña (El Niño) winters. Such anomalous circulation leads to a strong (weak) cold anomaly over CE, especially over East Asia, due to enhanced (weakened) cold air advection toward the CE during La Niña (El Niño). The UB‐related cyclonic anomaly in the midlatitude (high latitude) side of Eurasia is shown to be related to weakened (enhanced) eastward extension of strong westerly winds over midlatitude Eurasia during La Niña (El Niño) winters. The recent summer surface air temperature (SAT) changes over densely populated Eurasia exhibit a non‐uniform pattern with amplified warming over Europe and East Asia (EA) but weak warming over Central Asia (CA), forming a wave train‐like structure. However, the key factors that determine this non‐uniform warming pattern remain unclear. By analyzing observations and model simulations, here, we show that more than half of the SAT multidecadal variations from 1950 to 2014 over Europe‐west Asia and EA may have resulted from external forcing, rather than from internal variability in the Atlantic as previously thought. In contrast, the recent SAT over CA is influenced mainly by internal variations in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Large ensemble model simulations suggest that the forced SAT multidecadal variations over Eurasia are mainly caused by changes in greenhouse gases and aerosols. Our findings provide strong evidence for major impacts of external forcing on multidecadal climate variations over Eurasia. Here we show that the surface air temperature multidecadal variations since 1950 over Eurasia are caused by both IV and external forcing, with more than half of the variations over Europe‐west Asia and EA resulted from external forcing (i.e., greenhouse gases [GHGs] and aerosols), in contrast to the previous notion that the non‐uniform warming is mainly originated from the Atlantic Ocean. Looking ahead into the upcoming decades, aerosols will continue to decrease, whereas the AMO will likely be in its positive phase. This study investigates the variability of summer surface air temperature (SAT) over northern Eurasia and its precursory signals in the tropical Atlantic and northern Asian land. The leading mode of summer SAT variations features a northern Eurasian SAT tripole (NEST) pattern, with two same‐sign SAT anomaly regions over eastern Europe–western Siberia and the Far East region and an opposite‐sign SAT anomaly region around the Baikal Lake. It is found that sea surface temperature (SST) or SAT anomalies in the tropical Atlantic and rainfall‐soil moisture anomalies around the Baikal Lake during May can modulate the NEST pattern. The SST anomalies in the tropical Atlantic persist from May to summer and induce a downstream zonal wave train across northern Eurasia, consequently causing the variation in the summer NEST pattern. May rainfall anomalies around the Baikal Lake affect the overlying atmospheric circulation during summer through the 'memory' effect of soil moisture and the soil moisture‐rainfall interaction, correspondingly modulating the downstream wave train and the associated NEST pattern. Based on the above results, a statistical prediction model is established using the two precursory signals, that is, SAT in the tropical Atlantic and rainfall around the Baikal Lake during May. The leave‐three‐out cross‐validation shows that the model has a high skill in predicting the summer NEST pattern, with a correlation coefficient of 0.51 (significant at the 99.8% confidence level) between observation and prediction during the period 1980–2016. The western Pacific pattern (WP), characterized by a meridional dipole structure in geopotential height anomalies centred at approximately 50°N over the North Pacific, is one of the most prominent teleconnection patterns over the Northern Hemisphere (NH) in boreal winter. Several methods to identify the WP exist in the literature. Based on eight WP indices defined by different methods, this study analyses their dominant frequencies, spatial structures, climatic impacts, and relations to the Arctic Oscillation (AO) and El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO). The correlation coefficients of the eight WP indices show a considerable spread, but most of them are statistically significant. Most of the WPIs capture a pronounced power peak at approximately 5 years. The meridional dipole structure of the WP can be captured by all the WPIs, but it shows a large spread in the location of the centre. Several WPIs are significantly correlated with the winter AO, with marked signals of atmospheric anomalies over the Arctic region. The connections of the WP with the simultaneous winter ENSO depend largely on their definitions. The impacts of the WP on the surface air temperature over many parts of Eurasia and North America are also sensitive to its definition. In the context of global warming, determining to what extent natural variability and external forcing have an impact on climate change is crucial for formulating mitigation policies and adaptation plans. We quantifiably and effectively separate unnatural trends from the global land surface air temperature (SAT) changes during 1951–2015 by calculating the long‐term correlation exponent through detrended fluctuation analysis and applying mainly probability statistics methods. We provide effective discriminated evidence for whether the observed SAT change exceeds its natural internal variability. Furthermore, we search the range of SAT changes caused by unnatural trends, and identify their corresponding minimum contributions to warming relative trends in different regions. The unnatural warming of the mid‐ to high latitude inland areas of Eurasia and North America is basically high, and the warming responses to unnatural forcing are most intense in these areas. Compared to earlier detection, we find the minimum unnatural trend contributes more than 80% to the observed SAT change in North America, northern Greenland, eastern Africa, and the mid‐ to high latitudes of Eurasia. In addition, the temporal evolutions of unnatural trends in key areas are determined. In North Africa, Western Australia, the United States and Mexico, the unnatural impact became significant at the earliest. Meanwhile, the overall unnatural trend in North Africa is the most significant, followed by western Brazil, and grows most rapidly over time in the two key areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Coupling of soil‐air temperature is fundamentally relevant to various biophysical and biogeochemical functions near the land surface. However, coupling at an interannual scale is less addressed than at finer timescales, such as diurnal and seasonal scales. Here, we show that interannual variability of soil‐air temperature coupling decreased significantly during 1984–2013 across 196 stations in northern Eurasia. Coupling at a depth of 0.2 m remained significant in only 53% of stations during 1999–2013, while it was significant in 80% of stations during 1984–1998. Decreased coupling is mainly attributable to air temperature change in the snow‐free season and snow cover retreat. Moreover, change in the extreme snow cover frequency also contributes to the decline, while other climate extremes are less influential. The findings can help us to understand long‐term land‐climate thermal interactions and to evaluate soil temperature profiles simulated by land surface models. Plain Language Summary: The near‐surface air temperature closely relates to soil temperature, and the strength of this relationship may be altered by the presence of other environmental elements such as snow cover, soil moisture, and vegetation. In this study, by using paired observations at 196 stations collected from 1984 to 2013 over northern Eurasia, we show that coupling of soil‐air temperature was not constant and decreased over time. In the European part of the study region, the coupling consistently decreased; however, there was no clear pattern over the permafrost area. We found that this decline may relate to the increase in air temperature during the snow‐free season and snow cover retreat over the period. The decreased coupling was also affected by extreme snow cover frequency. Moreover, we found that the decrease in coupling may accelerate if warming continues in the future. Under a changing climate, the compound impacts of multiple environmental changes on the interannual variability of coupling remain uncertain. The results can advance our knowledge of long‐term soil‐air temperature coupling and help in evaluating soil temperature profiles simulated by land surface models. In recent years, extreme cold air outbreak events (COEs) in winter have tended to occur more frequently over the mid‐latitudes of Eurasia, including Mongolia, despite marked warming across the continent. In the 2000s, an increase in COEs contributed to huge losses of livestock throughout Mongolia, causing socioeconomic stagnation. This study diagnosed the interdecadal variability of the frequency of COEs during cold season (November–March) using observations from 70 meteorological stations in Mongolia by contrasting a past period (PP:1981–1999) and a recent period (RP:2000–2016). Then, this analysis was extended to characterize the synoptic pattern of each period using ERA‐Interim reanalysis data in terms of the ridge and trough system and cold advection. We defined a COE as an event having at least five continuous days with a daily average air temperature lower than minus one standard deviation from the daily climatology during cold season in 1981–2016. The results revealed that totally 112 COEs could be identified over Mongolia during 1981–2016 with a higher number of events (59) during the RP. Regionally, a slight increase in COEs was observed in the north, whereas no clear change was evident in the south. Composite analyses for each period demonstrated that a trough in the central Eurasian mid‐troposphere was deepened and southwestward advection of cold air enhanced during the RP, in comparison with the PP, which changed the wind direction over northern Mongolia from westerly to northwesterly. In addition, the number of snow cover days have increased slightly in the RP in northern Mongolia, likely acting as a favourable condition for low air temperatures with intensifying surface cooling. These findings suggest that a deepened trough over central Eurasia, strengthened northerly cold advection into Mongolia, and cooling from the snow‐covered surface are most likely to have resulted in the increased frequency of COEs overnorthern Mongolia in the RP. This study examines projected changes in surface air temperature (SAT) and precipitation over mid–high latitudes of Eurasia during boreal spring in a 1.5/2°C warmer world (relative to pre‐industrial level) using historical, RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 simulations from 16 climate models of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5. Results show that spatial patterns of spring SAT and precipitation changes over Eurasia in the 1.5/2°C warmer world relative to the current climate (1979–2005) are similar between the two RCPs, but with a slightly larger amplitude in the RCP8.5. Spring SAT warmings over Eurasia are faster than the global annual mean. Amplitudes of the spring Eurasian SAT warmings are larger over higher latitudes. An additional 0.5°C global warming leads to extra spring Eurasian SAT warmings, with the magnitude larger than 0.5°C. Changes in the spring maximum temperature are comparable to the mean temperature changes both in the 1.5 and 2°C warming targets. Significant increases in the mean and extreme precipitation are only seen over parts of Eurasia. An additional 0.5°C global warming does not lead to obvious changes in the mean and extreme spring precipitation. Global temperature change is strongly affected by internal climate variability (ICV). The temporal change of the ICV on the decadal to multi‐decadal scales is referred as the decadal modulated oscillation (DMO) that plays a dominated role in the occurrence of enhanced warming and warming hiatus. However, investigation on the DMO in modern historical period has received limited attention. In this study, the ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) method was applied to the surface air temperature (SAT) during the boreal cold season to extract the DMO signal in the past century. Two most sensitive areas of DMO trend over northern Eurasia and northwestern North America were identified and used to build a time series of regionally enhanced DMO. It showed an obvious decadal periodic oscillation at 11–23 years and exhibited increasing amplitude. In addition, regression analysis using Niño3.4, Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), Atlantic Multi‐decadal Oscillation (AMO), and Arctic Oscillation (AO) revealed a major role of the AO in DMO over the mid‐to‐high latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere (NH). However, such strong oscillation signal has not been detected in most of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) models, and the extracted regionally enhanced DMO are capable of improving the predictability of SAT over the mid‐to‐high latitudes in the NH. Siberia is a region where despite global warming a winter cooling trend has been observed over last decades. This cooling trend and its potential linkage to Arctic sea ice loss are controversially discussed. However, recent winters have not been taken into account so far. Here, we analyse ERA‐Interim reanalysis data until 2017 and ERA20C reanalysis to investigate the robustness of the winter surface air temperature trends to updated and extended time periods. Our results show that winter temperatures in Siberia were above normal after 2013 leading to strongly reduced cooling trends since 1980. The trend before 2014 was dominated by four cold winters between 2010 and 2013. These cold winters were mainly caused by strong negative phases of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), except for the winter 2011/2012, where the NAO was positive and a strongly negative phase of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) in combination with low sea ice in the Barents Sea caused the cold winter. Both NAO and PDO shift from more negative to positive phases in 2014 and contribute to a return to warmer Siberian temperatures. Furthermore, the NAO shows no trend between 1980 and 2017 indicating that the suggested linkage between Arctic sea ice loss and a negative trend in this mode is not robust. However, continuously low Arctic sea ice in recent years and a slightly negative trend in the PDO since 1980 contribute to the remaining observed cold trends over parts of Eurasia between 1980 and 2017. Central Asia witnessed progressive aridification during the Miocene, commonly related to mountain uplift, the Paratethys retreat and global climate cooling. However, the formation of Miocene lakes in Central Asia seems to oppose drier conditions, suggesting that the precise timing, extent and forcing of the aridification is still not well constrained. This study presents a facies model for the alluvial–lacustrine part of the Middle to Late Miocene of the Ili Basin, obtained from two successions. The model enables the semi‐quantitative assessment of regional water level and salinity, and characterizes the control of water level on evaporite formation and diagenesis. Both the proximal Kendyrlisai and the distal Aktau successions show an overall increase in water availability from dry mudflat deposits to lacustrine sedimentation with a transitional playa phase. Increasing evaporation rates outpaced the water supply and caused groundwater salinization. Subsequent lake expansion coincided with a basin‐wide desalinization and required a shift to a positive water budget. A climatic control of the hydrological evolution is inferred due to abrupt salinization and a minor tectonic influence. The long‐term water accumulation is probably related to the hydrological closure of the basin in the early Middle Miocene (15·3 Ma). Starting at 14·3 Ma, the step‐wise salinization occurred simultaneously with the global cooling of the Miocene Climate Transition. The Miocene Climate Transition led to extreme aridity in the Ili Basin, highlighted by the early diagenetic formation of displacive anhydrite in the basin centre. The expansion of the freshwater lake (12·7 to 11·5 Ma) was possibly promoted by lower evaporation rates due to decreasing air temperatures in the Ili Basin after the Miocene Climate Transition. The extreme aridity in the Ili Basin is interpreted as a continental counterpart to the Badenian Salinity Crisis in the Central Paratethys. This study evaluates the possible influence of the winter surface conditions in Eurasia on the summer circulation over the Asian continent and Indo‐Pacific region. We have analysed multi‐seasonal ensemble reforecasts for 30 years (1979–2008) using the National Centers for Environmental Prediction Climate Forecast System version 2 initialized at the beginning of each month from January to May. It is found that the reforecasts initialized in winter (e.g., February) overestimate the snow cover fraction, depth and water equivalent, as well as surface albedo in the excessively snow‐covered portion of Eurasia from March to June. These biases are generated and perpetuated by a snow‐albedo feedback, leading to excessive upwards shortwave radiation reflected from the overly snow‐covered surface and an intense cold bias from the surface to mid‐troposphere. Originating over land, the cold bias is extended eastwards over the northwestern North Pacific by the advection of prevailing westerly winds. The cold air temperature in the broad mid‐latitude Asian‐Pacific region causes significantly lower geopotential heights at pressure levels in the middle and upper troposphere and thus increases the upper‐level westerly winds on its southern flank over the Asian continent and Indo‐Pacific. A slower than observed snow melting rate helps the winter cold bias persists well into the summer season in these runs. As a result, compared with the reforecasts initialized in spring (e.g., May), winter‐initialized reforecasts feature lower geopotential heights in the upper troposphere over Eurasia and a stronger subtropical jet over the Asian continent and the North Pacific from May to September, especially in early summer. The CFSv2 reforecasts in both sets of cases have too little total cloud fraction over Eurasia during June–August, leading to enhanced downwards shortwave radiation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Eurasia is one of the most sensitive areas to climate change in the world. Its western and eastern coasts are very likely to exhibit different temperature and precipitation variations in response to the global climate change. By using precipitation (PRCP), maximum temperature (Tmax), minimum temperature (Tmin), and daily temperature range (DTR) data from 333 meteorological stations in Western (WE) and Eastern Eurasia (EE), we quantitatively compared spatio‐temporal changes on both the seasonal and annual scales from 1961 to 2012. Results showed that PRCP mainly exhibited increasing trends in northern WE and decreasing trends in southern WE, whereas PRCP in EE recorded an increase–decrease–increase trend from high to low latitudes. The increase of annual PRCP in WE was higher than that in EE. On the seasonal scale, the PRCP in WE recorded an opposite trend from EE. Tmax and Tmin significantly increased for almost all stations on the annual and seasonal scales, especially during the winter. Nevertheless, the increase of Tmin was higher than that of Tmax in EE, resulting in a decreased DTR on both the seasonal and annual scales. An reverse trend of DTR was detected in WE. Our results concluded that the Arctic Oscillation was the major large‐scale atmospheric circulation affecting the trends of PRCP (negative correlation) and temperature (positive correlation) over WE and EE, and it might play an important role in future climate change. A coordinated set of large ensemble atmosphere‐only simulations is used to investigate the impacts of observed Arctic sea ice‐driven variability (SIDV) on the atmospheric circulation during 1979–2014. The experimental protocol permits separating Arctic SIDV from internal variability and variability driven by other forcings including sea surface temperature and greenhouse gases. The geographic pattern of SIDV is consistent across seven participating models, but its magnitude strongly depends on ensemble size. Based on 130 members, winter SIDV is ~0.18 hPa2 for Arctic‐averaged sea level pressure (~1.5% of the total variance), and ~0.35 K2 for surface air temperature (~21%) at interannual and longer timescales. The results suggest that more than 100 (40) members are needed to separate Arctic SIDV from other components for dynamical (thermodynamical) variables, and insufficient ensemble size always leads to overestimation of SIDV. Nevertheless, SIDV is 0.75–1.5 times as large as the variability driven by other forcings over northern Eurasia and Arctic. Plain Language Summary: Changing Arctic sea ice conditions since the late 1970s have exerted profound impacts on environment and ecosystem at the high latitudes and have been suggested to affect midlatitude weather and climate, although this topic has been controversial. In order to improve our understanding on how Arctic sea ice changes influence local and remote weather and climate, a coordinated set of experiments has been performed using various state‐of‐the‐art atmosphere‐only models to study the linkages between the Arctic climate change and lower latitudes. This study uses seven models following a common experimental protocol to investigate the atmospheric circulation changes forced by Arctic sea ice variability. The protocol allows the Arctic sea ice‐driven variability (SIDV) to be singled out. In boreal winter, the Arctic SIDV is ~0.18 hPa2 and accounts for only ~1.5% of the total variance for sea level pressure, while it is ~0.35 K2 and accounts for ~21% for surface air temperature. The results also suggest that using insufficient ensembles always leads to an overestimation of SIDV, and more than 100 and 40 ensemble members are needed for sea level pressure and surface air temperature within the Arctic, respectively, to separate the SIDV from the variability due to other factors, primarily the atmospheric internal variability.
