The Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis) is bred extensively in Eastern and Northern China and faces a series of problems such as frequent diseases, germplasm degradation, and declining benefits, which have appeared to seriously affect the sustainable development of the cultivation industry. Haematococcus pluvialis, a type of unicellular green algae, have been proven to be the suitable dietary supplementation in crustacean feeds. After 14 days of feeding with 5% dietary supplementation with Haematococcus pluvialis powder, the growth, antioxidantase activities, and gut microbiota of E. sinensis were analyzed. The results indicated that H. pluvialis powder could significantly improve growth indicators including weight gain rate (WGR) and specific growth rate (SGR) of E. sinensis (p < 0.05). The levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) declined, while that of phenoloxidase (PO) kept rising under the treatment of H. pluvialis powder. Moreover, alkaline phosphatase (AKP) activity dropped initially and then increased. No significant differences in the Simpson index and Chao1 index in the control and H. pluvialis powder treatment were observed (p > 0.05). Although the dominant microbiota in the crab gut were not affected significantly by H. pluvialis powder, significant differences in the relative abundance of the dominant phyla between the control and H. pluvialis powder treatment groups were observed (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the relative abundance of Firmicutes and Candidatus_Bacilloplasma, which play an important role in the life activities of E. sinensis, were significantly higher in the group treated by H. pluvialis powder than in the control (p < 0.05). Therefore, the H. pluvialis powder could be potentially used not only as a rapid fattening regulator, but also to improve the immunity and metabolic capacity of E. sinensis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: Zingiber (Zingiberaceae: Zingibereae) is an economically important but taxonomically difficult genus, with names frequently misapplied. Here, we thoroughly review all names corresponding to the currently recognised 54 species from China including their synonyms, and clarify the status of their types. Lectotypes are designated for 40 names (including one second‐step), neotypes for 3 names, and epitypes for 3 names. Additional and often uncited isotypes have been discovered for numerous names, and such additional records are here provided. Tupistra bambusifolia var. rubromaculosa, Z. simaoense, Z. confine and Z. larsenii are newly treated as synonyms of Z. atrorubens, Z. densissimum, Z. officinale and Z. recurvatum respectively. A new combination, Z. bambusifolium, is proposed, based on Tupistra bambusifolia. This study will form the nomenclatural basis of an ongoing taxonomic revision of the genus in China, and phylogenetic study of the genus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Deep‐water gravity depositional processes and evolution in arc systems have become topics of intense research focus in recent years. This study discusses the co‐evolution of volcanism and deep‐water gravity flow deposits at the southern margin of the Junggar Basin, based on petrology, geochronology and geochemical analyses. The results show that a massive collapse of unstable sediments from the slope was triggered by volcanism, resulting in the formation of slumping gravity flows. The occurrence of volcanic beds in the slump deposits confirm that synchronous volcanism likely affected sediment instability, triggering gravity flows. The Th/Yb, Ta/Yb and Th/Ta elemental ratios, U‐Pb ages of detrital zircons and paleocurrent directions indicate that the North Tianshan (NTS) island arc represents the provenance of the Qianxia Formation. Moreover, statistical data on the pyroclastic components in the gravity flow deposits reveal an intensity index of volcanism, indicating that volcanism is strongly related to gravity flow deposits, especially in terms of the type and distribution of the deposits. A model for volcanically‐triggered deep‐water gravity flow deposits is established, in order to provide a more in‐depth understanding of the co‐evolution of volcanism and gravity flow deposits within the depositional setting of the late Paleozoic NTS oceanic subduction margin in the Junggar Basin. The Forum of China‐Africa Cooperation benefits both China and Africa in tackling development issues. Increased foreign direct investment from China can specifically help to reduce Africa's struggles to meet its 2030 sustainable development goals. Due to insufficient global investment experience and stigmatization, Chinese multinational companies (MNCs) often experience unsatisfactory corporate performance in host countries. A successful strategy to mitigate stigma and be perceived by stakeholders as "legitimate" is through corporate social responsibility (CSR) engagement. Exploring how Chinese MNCs in Africa can achieve desirable corporate performance through CSR engagement is important to promote mutual benefits for both Chinese MNCs and African societies. This study aimed to contribute to emerging market CSR literature by examining the relationship between CSR engagement and corporate performance of Chinese manufacturing MNCs operating in Africa, with emphasis on moral legitimacy as a mediating factor and institutional distance as a moderating factor. Survey data were collected between June 2019 and January 2020 from a sample of 203 Chinese manufacturing MNCs subsidiaries in Africa. By using hierarchical regression and bootstrapping, we find that the positive relationship between CSR engagement and corporate performance is fully mediated by moral legitimacy gaining. This mediation effect is moderated by institutional distance. The results enrich our understanding of how Chinese manufacturing MNCs' corporate performance can be enhanced by addressing social challenges and promoting sustainable investment cooperation with African countries. These results are important for Chinese MNCs and authorities, as well as African public authorities when designing policies to promote China‐Africa sustainable investment cooperation. Biodiversity is threatened by global changes, but related research has focused primarily on species or functional group diversity, neglecting their interaction networks. The latter are particularly sensitive to global changes and essential for biodiversity maintenance. Furthermore, multiple global change factors are typically examined separately, rather than in concert which is more realistic in nature.To explore the responses of arthropod networks to multiple global changes, we conducted a field experiment in temperate grassland in northeast China, in which nitrogen (N) deposition, drought, snowmelt timing and their interactions were manipulated. We constructed and assessed networks of arthropod functional groups, and explored their responses to changes in plant communities and the abiotic environments.Nitrogen addition decreased arthropod network complexity because increased foliar N and simplified plant community strengthened trophic chains along a single pathway, weakening the net effect of other pathways. However, experimental drought decreased network complexity by filtering out plant species and changing micro‐habitats. While delayed snowmelt significantly increased arthropod abundance only in early spring, its interaction with N addition or with drought had various impacts on arthropod functional groups. Our results suggest that the interaction of arthropod consumers with plant species richness and with plant nutrients finally reduced the robustness, connectedness and function of entire species/functional group networks in response to global change factors.In conclusion, species loss and increasing plant nutrient concentrations are key factors simplifying networks under multiple global changes, and such simplification is likely to be strengthened if coupled with changes in micro‐habitats. Our study highlighted that the effects of multiple global change factors should be studied in concert, even though they occur in different seasons, so that their effects on ecological networks can be perceived as a panorama. Although impulse buying could temporarily increase sales, it is essential to explore how to curb impulse buying because impulse buying leads to negative consequences for both consumers and enterprises in the long run. Previous research investigated the negative correlation between impulse buying and situational factors or personal traits. However, these factors were complicated for marketers or consumers to manipulate, so the research gap was that a lack of research focused on how to curb impulse buying through external intervention. This study aimed to find an effective external intervention to curb impulse buying and thus fill the blanket. This study introduced maximising mindset, a mindset that could be manipulated externally and used effectively by consumers and marketers to curb impulse buying. Data were collected online from 1106 participants in China through the research platform Sojump. The results demonstrated that maximising mindset negatively correlated with impulse buying, and future‐oriented thinking played a role as a mediator. This study contained theoretical for future research on impulse buying and practical value in helping consumers achieve better decisions and helping companies achieve long‐term growth. Aim: To study the feasibility and effectiveness of a m‐Health app in improving the management of rheumatoid arthritis. Design: Randomized controlled trial. Methods: Sixty rheumatoid arthritis participants will be recruited for a 6‐month feasibility study. Patients meeting the inclusion criteria will be randomly allocated to receive standard care or standard care plus the m‐Health intervention. The primary outcome is the feasibility of a randomized controlled trial. In addition, we will investigate patient satisfaction in using the "Rheumatism Center" app in the intervention group. The secondary outcomes include the scores for the simplified disease activity index, clinical disease activity index, disease activity score 28, health assessment questionnaire and 6‐item self‐efficacy scale for chronic diseases. The assessments will be performed at baseline and at 4 weeks, 3 months and 6 months after the study is initiated. At the end of the study, we will also collect user views of the app through qualitative interviews. Results: This study is ongoing. The findings of this study will determine the feasibility and effectiveness of m‐Health intervention in the management of rheumatoid arthritis, hoping to enhance the awareness of disease management and quality of life for rheumatoid arthritis patients. The mantle xenoliths in the Quaternary Changbaishan Volcano in southern Jilin Province contain spinel-facies lherzolites. The equilibration temperatures for these samples range from 902°C to 1064°C based on the two-pyroxene thermometer of Brey and Köhler (1990), and using the oxybarometry of Nell and Wood (1991), the oxidation state was estimated from FMQ-1.32 to -0.38 with an average value of FMQ-0.81 ( n= 8), which is comparable to that of abyssal peridotites and the asthenospheric mantle. The fO2 values of peridotites, together with their bulk rock compositions (e.g., Mg#, Al2O3, CaO, Ni, Co, Cr) and mineral compositions (e.g., Mg# of olivine and pyroxene, Cr# [=Cr/[Cr+Al]] and Mg# [=Mg/[Mg+Fe2+] of spinel), suggest that the present-day subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) beneath the Changbaishan Volcano most likely formed from an upwelling asthenosphere at some time after the late Mesozoic and has undergone a low degree of partial melting. The studied lherzolite xenoliths show low concentrations of S, Cu, and platinum group elements (PGE), which plot a flat pattern on primitive-mantle normalized diagram. Very low concentrations in our samples suggest that PGEs occur as alloys or hosted by silicate and oxide minerals. The compositions of the studied samples are similar to those of peridotite xenoliths in the Longgang volcanic field (LVF) in their mineralogy and bulk rock compositions including the abundance of chalcophile and siderophile elements. However, they are distinctly different from those of peridotite xenoliths in other areas of the North China Craton (NCC) in terms of Cu, S and PGE. Our data suggest that the SCLM underlying the northeastern part of the NCC may represent a distinct unit of the newly formed lithospheric mantle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The common pearl oyster, Pinctada fucata (Gould), is the most important species that is cultured for production of marine pearls in China. Heavy mortality and the decline of pearl quality have resulted in a breeding programme being established in recent years. In this study, we conducted selective breeding for the second generation of pearl oyster P. fucata (JCS-2) by mass selection for shell height (SH) with a selection intensity of 1.614, and analysed the growth of the selected line (JCS-2) and the non-selected control line (JCC) during a 1-year grow-out period. The results show that the selected line grew faster than the control one in the SH and total weight (TW) ( P<0.05), and there were higher proportion of larger sized oysters. Coefficient of variation for SH of JCS-2 was smaller than that of JCC. The current genetic gains and realized heritability for JCS-2 averaged 16.03 ± 4.79% and 0.713 ± 0.208 at 3–15 months of age respectively. The findings indicated the selection response to faster growth for SH is markedly effective in the second generation, and there was a high correlated response of TW when selecting for SH. Interactions between plant hosts and their microbiotas are becoming increasingly evident, while the effects of plant communities on microbial communities in different geographic environments are poorly understood. Here, the differentiation of licorice plant ecotypes and the distribution of root‐associated microbiotas were investigated across five sampling sites in northwest China. The interactions between the environment, plant and microbial communities, and their effects on licorice root secondary metabolites, were elucidated. The plant community was clearly differentiated into distinct ecotypes based on genotyping‐by‐sequencing and was primarily driven by geographic distance and available soil nitrogen. The bulk soil and root‐associated microbiotas (rhizosphere soil and root endosphere) partially correlated with plant community, but all were significantly discriminated by plant clade. Moreover, these microbiotas were explained to different extents by distinct combinations of environment, geography, and plant community. Similarly, three structural equation models showed that licorice root secondary metabolites were complicatedly modulated by multiple abiotic and biotic factors, and were mostly explained by these factors in the rhizosphere model. Collectively, the results provide novel insights into the role of environment–plant–microbiota interactions in regulating root secondary metabolites. Aim: China is among the countries with highest mammal diversity in the world, but a considerable proportion of Chinese terrestrial mammal species is currently at risk of extinction. For effective conservation, it would be fundamental to answer the following questions: (1) Is extinction risk randomly distributed among families in Chinese terrestrial mammals? (2) If not, which families are more threatened than expected by chance? (3) What are the major ecological predictors of extinction vulnerability? (4) Does taxonomic difference exist in ecological correlates of extinction risk? (5) To what extent does anthropogenic disturbance contribute to variations in extinction risk? Location: China. Methods: We collected data on biological traits, environmental factors and anthropogenic disturbance for 453 Chinese terrestrial mammals. We used phylogenetically controlled regression models and model selection to identify predictors of extinction risk for the whole species set and for the three large taxonomic groups (Carnivora, Artiodactyla and Lagomorpha) separately. Results: We found that extinction risk was not randomly distributed among families. Seven families (old world monkeys, gibbons, cats, civets and genets, musk deer, deer and bovids) contained significantly higher proportions of threatened species than expected by chance. Geographic range size was the only factor consistently supported in all the best models for the whole species set and for three large taxonomic groups. Although considered important in the global model for the whole species set, body weight was a poor predictor of extinction risk in taxon‐specific analyses. We also detected considerable differences in ecological correlates of extinction risk among Carnivora, Artiodactyla and Lagomorpha. After controlling for phylogeny, anthropogenic disturbance was not significantly correlated with extinction risk. Main conclusions: For effective conservation, we should pay special attention to those highly threatened families and the species with limited range size. The high-tech industry is the main force promoting the development of China's national economy. As its industrial economic strength grows, China's high-tech industry is increasingly using cross-border mergers and acquisitions (CBM&A) as an important way to "go out." To explore the rules governing the process and operation mechanism of reverse knowledge transfer (RKT) through the CBM&A of China's high-tech industry under government intervention, a tripartite evolutionary game model of the government, the parent company, and the subsidiary as the main subjects is constructed in this paper. The strategies adopted by the three subjects in the RKT game process are analysed, and the factors influencing RKT through CBM&A under government intervention are simulated and analysed using Python 3.7 software. The results show that, under government intervention, the parent company and subsidiary have different degrees of influence on each other. Subsidiaries are highly sensitive to the compensation rate of RKT. Positive intervention by the government tends to foster stable cooperation between the parent company and the subsidiary. However, over time, the government gradually relaxes its intervention in the RKT and innovation of multinational companies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas is a representative bivalve mollusc that is widely cultured in the world and is the largest molluscan group cultured in China. In order to assess the feasibility of improving survival of C. gigas through genetic selection, the heritability and genetic correlations for growth and survival traits between different life stages were examined. Genetic parameters were estimated based on intraclass correlations of 49 full‐sib families (29 half‐sib families) in larvae (4 and 20 days after fertilization) and spat (140 days after fertilization) stages. The heritability for growth traits in larvae and spat was 0.30–0.86 and 0.53–0.59, respectively, and varied with ages. The heritability of survival was low in larvae (0.13 ± 0.05 and 0.17 ± 0.04, respectively for 4 and 20 days after fertilization) but medium (0.39 ± 0.07) in spat, suggesting that selection for increasing spat survival was feasible. The genetic correlation between growth traits within age was medium to high and positive (ranging from 0.47 to 0.96, respectively, between shell length (SL) and shell height (SH) at 20 days and between SL and SH at 140 days after fertilization), suggesting that selection to improve single growth trait will cause positive response in another growth traits in C. gigas. The genetic correlations between survival and growth traits at 140 days were low but positive (ranging from 0.23 to 0.27, respectively, between survival and SH and between survival and SL at 140 days after fertilization), suggesting that selection for survival may not have a negative response in growth. The Fujian oyster, Crassostrea angulata, accounts for approximately 50% of the total oyster production in China and is one of the most economically important marine products. In this study, we investigated differential gene expression profiles between diploid (n = 2) and triploid (n = 3) oysters that may indicate the specific adaptation associated with ploidy. A total of 14,626,126 and 15,492,551 reads were generated from diploid and triploid oyster muscle transcriptomes using Illumina RNA‐Seq respectively. Gene expression analysis revealed a total of 2,045 differentially expressed genes between 2n and 3n individuals, from which 814 genes were significantly up‐regulated in the 2n transcriptome while 1,231 were down‐regulated. In addition, 24 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were uniquely expressed in 2n individuals while 28 DEGs were uniquely expressed in 3n individuals. Furthermore, our pathway analysis suggested that the DEGs up‐regulated in 2n oysters were enriched in the pathways related to normal growth, development and reproduction, whereas DEGs up‐regulated in 3n individuals may be involved in faster growth and metabolism. Finally, we validated the expression levels of 15 genes using quantitative real‐time PCR (qRT‐PCR), and 14 out of 15 genes showed consistent expression patterns with RNA‐Seq data. This study provides an important foundation for further investigations on distinct gene expression patterns and signalling pathways that differ between diploid and triploid oysters. Development of adventitious roots (ARs) at the base of the shoot is an important adaptation of plants to waterlogging stress; however, its physiological mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we investigated the regulation of AR formation under waterlogged conditions by hormones and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in Cucumis sativus L., an agriculturally and economically important crop in China. We found that ethylene, auxin, and ROS accumulated in the waterlogged cucumber plants. On the other hand, application of the ethylene receptor inhibitor 1‐methylcyclopropene (1‐MCP), the auxin transport inhibitor 1‐naphthylphthalamic acid (NPA), or the NADPH oxidase inhibitor diphenyleneiodonium (DPI) decreased the number of ARs induced by waterlogging. Auxin enhanced the expression of ethylene biosynthesis genes, which led to ethylene entrapment in waterlogged plants. Both ethylene and auxin induced the generation of ROS. Auxin‐induced AR formation was inhibited by 1‐MCP, although ethylene‐induced AR formation was not inhibited by NPA. Both ethylene‐ and auxin‐induced AR formation were counteracted by DPI. These results indicate that auxin‐induced AR formation is dependent on ethylene, whereas ethylene‐induced AR formation is independent of auxin. They also show that ROS signals mediate both ethylene‐ and auxin‐induced AR formation in cucumber plants. In response to waterlogging, many plants develop adventitious roots (ARs) to enhance gas exchange and nutrient uptake. Auxin, ethylene, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) all take part in this process, but little is known about how they interact. In cucumber, we report that auxin‐induced AR formation is dependent on ethylene, whereas ethylene‐induced AR formation is independent of auxin. Both ethylene and auxin upregulated genes involved in ROS production, which finally lead to AR formation. These results demonstrate the importance of crosstalk among ethylene, auxin, and ROS and show that the crosstalk is generally different in different plants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article examines the dramaturgical challenges of doing boundary work for a group of college women living with non‐college women at an overcrowded rental. To regulate tenant conduct and maintain their sense of self‐worth, the college women engaged in defensive othering and constructed their identity as “high‐quality” people on the basis of their characterization of their less‐educated roommates as “low‐quality” people. Their strategy of gaining self‐worth at their roommates' expense violated basic rules of social interaction that require participants to give face to gain face. This study shows that, in addition to weakening group solidarity and reproducing social inequalities, defensive othering also undermines subordinates' effort to gain self‐worth in the co‐presence of other subordinates. Most of the existed researches of educational service quality are concentrated on the definition of service quality in education, measurement methods and the establishment of scales, or on student perception of service quality and its implication, while researches on the causes of educational service quality are quite scarce. In this study, the discussion on the causes of educational service quality was complemented from the perspective of social network, especially through analysis at the team level. A total of 478 copies of social network questionnaires were collected from 15 educational teams. Meanwhile, targeting at the educational institutions' customers, the service quality survey was conducted with 1,487 copies of valid samples in total. The results indicate that individual-level social capital in the form of trust relations positively influences educational service quality. Among the group level factors, group centrality and number of cliques have a significant impact on group members' service quality, which also moderate the effect of trust on service quality. Natural disasters cause disastrous losses of life and property in China. The most serious losses come from floods which represent more than 1% of the notional gross domestic product. Currently, there is no effective compensation mechanism to counteract the impact of floods. The existing mechanism mainly relies on guidance from the national government with cooperation from local governments. The value of compensation from government is less than 10% of the value of lost property. Worldwide, the two main mechanisms to compensate for losses caused by flood are government allocations and commercial markets, and insurance is the most popular commercial instrument to deal with flood losses. In this paper, we explore whether China could adopt a commercial approach to compensation. Soil erosion is by far the greatest cause of land degradation and other environmental and socio-economic problems in China. Although various conservation methods are widely utilized to reduce soil erosion and to sustain agricultural production, the cost-effectiveness and selection of these methods are less known. Using our survey and ecological data, this study evaluated four soil and water conservation methods in Changting County, Southeast China. The results show that the disparity of conservation costs is much larger than that of ecological benefits. Planting fruit trees is a kind of conservation through primarily economic development. Closing hillsides for afforestation is most cost-effective, followed by forest fertilizing, and planting trees and grass. Our findings suggest that comparatively lower cost conservation methods, for example closing hillsides for afforestation, should be considered in priority if initial ecological conditions can meet the requirements of the method. Preclinical Research Premature ovarian failure (POF) is defined by the WHO as the loss of physiological ovarian function before the age of 40. The effect of American ginseng and its underlying mechanisms in preventing and treating premature ovarian failure (POF) was studied in female Sprague ‐ Dawley rats where POF was induced by ip administration of 4 ‐ vinylcyclohexene diepoxide (VCD). Rat behavior, serum hormone levels, ovarian and uterine size, pathological features, and ovarian tissue expression of genes associated with POF were assessed in controls, untreated POF model rats, and POF model rats treated with low ‐ (1.125 g/kg), medium ‐ (2.25 g/kg), and high ‐ dose (4.5 g/kg) American ginseng. Compared with untreated POF model rats, those treated with medium ‐ and high ‐ dose American ginseng had more stable behavior and better coat appearance as well as serum hormone levels closer to those in control rats. Moreover, treatment with medium ‐ or high ‐ dose American ginseng increased ovarian and uterine size. Hematoxylin and eosin ‐ staining revealed mature follicles and endometrium with an alternating concave/convex surface structure with visible capillaries and glands in ginseng ‐ treated POF rats. PLA2G4A expression was positively correlated with POF, while the expression levels of PAPPA, STC2, CCL2, and NELL1 were negatively correlated with POF. Our study showed that American ginseng may effectively prevent POF and alleviate POF symptoms by regulating serum hormone levels and altering the expression levels of genes related to POF in ovarian tissue. To evaluate the survival and growth performance of hybrid larvae and juveniles, we conducted hybridization experiments between Crassostrea hongkongensis and Crassostrea ariakensis at three salinities (15, 23, and 30 ppt). Hybrid fertilization occurred in one direction ( C. hongkongensis ♀ and C. ariakensis ♂), and the fertilization rates did not differ significantly among the three trial salinities. Molecular genetics analysis revealed that hybrid progenies were true hybrids. Hybrid juveniles survived better than C. hongkongensis juveniles at a salinity of 30 ppt. Hybrid larvae and juveniles showed intermediate growth between C. hongkongensis and C. ariakensis progenies. The growth of hybrid juveniles was significantly greater than that of C. hongkongensis juveniles at a salinity of 30 ppt. Overall, C. hongkongensis has a high economic value but favorable hatchery and farm of this species is restricted to lower salinity sites. Because the hybrids were shown to have greater growth and survival characteristics at high salinity, hybrids may be a more desirable candidate to be cultured in those areas of China with higher salinities, such as the Bohai Sea of China where the salinity is usually 30 ppt. Aim This paper is a report of concept analysis of self-efficacy in elderly with diabetes in China. Methods Literature was systematically retrieved from 2000 to 2011 using five databases: Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, MEDLINE, OVID, PsycInfo, and Web of Science. The key words used in the search were self-efficacy, diabetes, type 2, aged, self-care, and China. The electronic search was supplemented by a manual search of current issues of periodicals and follow-up of other cited materials, where appropriate. A total of 45 articles were retrieved. After a careful review of the 45 articles most relevant to the topic, 31 articles remained. They were used to complete a concept analysis using Walker and Avant's technique. Results Four defining attributes of self-efficacy were identified: (a) cognitive recognition of requisite specific techniques and skills required to undertake diabetes self-management, (b) perceived expectations of the outcomes of self-management, (c) confidence in the capability to perform self-management, and (d) sustained efforts in self-management of diabetes. Conclusions Self-efficacy has been an important determinant in self-management among elderly with diabetes. Metal pollution levels in estuarine and coastal environments have been widely reported, but few documented reports exist of severe contamination in specific environments. Here, we report on a metal-contaminated estuary in Fujian Province, China, in which blue oysters (Crassostrea hongkongensis) and green oysters (Crassostrea angulata) were discovered to be contaminated with Cu and other metals. Extraordinarily high metal concentrations were found in the oysters collected from the estuary. Comparison with historical data suggests that the estuary has recently been contaminated with Cr, Cu, Ni, and Zn. Metal concentrations in blue oysters were as high as 1.4 and 2.4% of whole-body tissue dry wt for Cu and Zn, respectively. Cellular debris was the main subcellular fraction binding the metals, but metal-rich granules were important for Cr, Ni, and Pb. With increasing Cu accumulation, its partitioning into the cytosolic proteins decreased. In contrast, metallothionein-like proteins increased their importance in binding with Zn as tissue concentrations of Zn increased. In the most severely contaminated oysters, only a negligible fraction of their Cu and Zn was bound with the metal-sensitive fraction, which may explain the survival of oysters in such contaminated environments. Two hydrological models with different structures and spatial capabilities are selected to simulate the runoff and actual evapotranspiration (AET) in Yingluoxia watershed, the upper reaches of Heihe River basin in northwest of China, to validate their performances in simulating hydrological processes. They are calibrated against the observed runoff at the watershed outlet (Yingluoxia station) for the period from 1990 to 1996 and validated for the period from 1997 to 2000. Results show that in terms of the simulated hydrograph against observations and the two selected objective functions, the conceptual, lumped Water And Snow balance MODeling system (WASMOD) with simple model structure could give the same, even better results than the semi-distributed Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) with complex structure. Compared with other model applications to the watershed, simulation for monthly runoff made in this study seems better. With regard to AET, results calculated from both models are comparable as well. Both WASMOD and SWAT are proved to be suitable and satisfactory tools in simulating hydrological processes in the study area, although both of them have strengths and limitations in applications. Pyrolysis of peanut shell in a fluidized bed to produce bio-oil is investigated as a useful way to utilize the agriculture residues in China. The influence of reaction temperature and the flow rate of carrier gas (N) on the pyrolysis product distribution and some characteristics of these products generated in the bench-scale fluidized-bed system developed in this study are quantified. The main components of bio-oil are classified into six categories including aldehydes, ketones, acids, esters, phenols, and alcohols that were analyzed with GC-MS. Properties of products (bio-oil, char, noncondensible gas) such as elemental analysis, moisture, heat value, kinematic viscosity, flashing point, and density, were also characterized. It was found out that the maximum yield of bio-oil, around 60% by weight, was achieved at reaction temperature at 500C and the flow rate of N at 3.2 Nm h. N balance and total mass balance on this system were performed to demonstrate the result credibility of the experiments. For the purpose of assessing the potential influence of tropical rain forest conversion to rubber plantation on catchment hydrology, a stable oxygen isotope was used as a tracer to identify the event water and prestorm water components of storm runoff during low- and high-flow conditions in a native tropical rain forest catchment (TRFC) and an artificial rubber plantation catchment (ARPC) in SW China. Isotopic hydrograph separations for the storm of April and September 2004 reveal that the event water made up only a small proportion of discharge (29 and 31%, respectively) at peak flow in the TRFC, while it made up the dominant component at peak flow (62 and 69%, respectively) in the ARPC. The analyses suggest that in the ARPC, the universal presence of compacted terraced tracks associated with land management would encourage infiltration-excess overland flow. This isotopic investigation demonstrates that tropical rain forest conversion to rubber plantation would markedly change the runoff generation processes in this area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents a case study on the exploration of Wenhai ecolodge as a tourist destination in southwest China. Wenhai ecolodge in Yunnan Province has addressed various human-environmental conflicts such as providing a source of income for residents and the use of fuel-efficient stoves to reduce wood consumption. However, the lodge is unsustainable due to the trash littered in the stream and the overflow of cans on patio. Meanwhile, ecotourism bubble arises as tourists visits the ecolodge.

To determine whether genetic improvement can be attained through a selective breeding programme, divergent selection for shell length was applied to two stocks of Haliotis diversicolor. Stock A was descended from the cross between males from a Japanese wild population and females from a Taiwan aquacultured population and Stock B was from the Taiwan cultured population, which had been successively cultured in mainland China for about 10 generations. The 10% largest and 10% smallest abalones for each of these two stocks were selected as parents for the large-selected and small-selected lines respectively. Equal numbers of abalone were randomly chosen from the two stocks to serve as parents for the control lines before the selection. The selected and control lines were reared under the same conditions at early juvenile, later juvenile and grow-out stages. Stock A showed a significantly higher response to selection and realized heritability than Stock B ( P<0.01). The large-selected line of Stock A and Stock B grew 12.79% and 4.58% faster than their control lines on shell length respectively. The average realized heritability for shell length was 0.441±0.064 for Stock A and 0.113±0.013 for Stock B. Responses to selection were different at different ages in each stock and the body weights of the selected lines were significantly different from the control lines in both stocks at the grow-out stage. Asymmetric responses to selection in the two directions were also observed in both stocks. With China's new Enterprise Bankruptcy Law (‘EBL 2006’) having come into effect on 1 June 2007, a critical issue arises as to the extent to which Article 5, as a cross-border provision, will strengthen creditors' rights across jurisdictions. In this paper attention will be paid in particular to how the Chinese People's Court is likely to exercise its discretion to grant recognition to a foreign court ruling, and vice versa. The paper will start with a brief introduction to the circumstances under which Article 5 came into being. The evolution of China's cross-border insolvency practices will be examined through an analysis of an inbound case of B&T (2002) as well as an outbound one of GITIC (2005). In spite of the fact that China has not adopted the UNCITRAL Model Law, essential factors deemed necessary to be considered by China's court and its counterparts in US and UK are to be highlighted throughout the paper. Little is known about the risk factors for suicide among psychiatric inpatients in China. In this study we identified the risk factors of suicide among psychiatric inpatients at Guangzhou Psychiatric Hospital. All psychiatric inpatients who died by suicide during the 1956-2005 period were included in this study. Using a case-control design, 64 inpatients with schizophrenia who died by suicide were compared with a matched 64 controls. The results indicate that the rate of suicide was 133.1/100,000 admissions (95%CI 103.4-162.9). There were no significant differences in the method, location, or time of suicide between male and female inpatients. The number of hospitalizations was significantly larger in the suicide group than that in the control group. In logistic regression analyses, guilty thought, depressive mood, and suicidal ideation and suicide attempt 1 month before hospital admission were identified as independent predictors of suicide among inpatients with schizophrenia. The findings of risk factors for schizophrenic inpatient suicide should be taken into account when developing interventions to prevent suicide among these patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim The aims of this paper are to reconstruct the vegetation and fire history over the past 2000 years in a well-preserved rain-forest area, to understand interactions between climate, fire, and vegetation, and to predict how rain forest responds to global warming and increased intensity of human activity. Location Xishuangbanna, south-west China, 21–22° N, 101–102° E. Methods Phytolith (plant opal silica bodies) morphotypes, assemblages, and indices were used to reconstruct palaeovegetation and palaeoclimate changes in detail. Micro-charcoal particles found in phytolith slides, together with burnt phytoliths and highly weathered bulliform cells, were employed to reconstruct a record of past fire occurrence. A survey of field sediments, lithology, and 14C dating were also employed. Results Phytoliths were divided into 11 groups and classified into 33 well-described morphotypes according to their shape under light microscopy and their presumed anatomical origins and ecological significance. The phytolith assemblages were divided into six significant zones that reveal a complete history of vegetation changes corresponding to climate variation and fire occurrence. Phytolith assemblages and indices show that the palaeoclimate in the study area is characterized by the alternation of warm–wet and cool–dry conditions. Phytolith and charcoal records reveal that 12 fire episodes occurred. Comparison of burnt phytoliths with an aridity index (Iph) shows that fire episodes have a strong relationship with drought events. Main conclusions Our results indicate that fire occurrence in the tropical rain forest of Xishuangbanna is predominantly under the control of natural climate variability (drought events). Nearly every fire episode is coupled with a climatic event and has triggered vegetation composition changes marked by a pronounced expansion of grasses. This indicates that drought interacts with fire to exert a strong influence on the ecological dynamics of the rain forest. However, the impact of human activity in recent centuries is also significant. Our results are important for understanding the interactions between climate, fire, and vegetation, and for predicting how rain forest responds to global warming and increased human activity. 1. At a local scale, the species composition, diversity and spatial variation of wetland plant communities are determined primarily by spatial and temporal heterogeneity in their environments. Less is known about variation at a landscape-level. The floodplain of the Changjiang (Yangtze) River in China includes hydrologically connected, subtropical wetlands with different hydrological characteristics. 2. We examined seed-bank species composition and richness in marshes of two contrasting hydrological types: permanent marshes, fed by local runoff, and lakeshore marshes more closely connected to the regulated river. Lakeshore marshes are flooded annually to depth of approximately 1 m and during flooding they support an alternate, aquatic vegetation type. The soil seed bank in March was a comparative estimator of species diversity. At the beginning of the growing season it included seeds from both phases of alternating vegetation types associated with the annual hydrological cycle. 3. A regional pool of 101 species was detected in the seed banks of six wetlands associated with the river and its tributaries: 56 occurred in permanent marshes and 59 in lakeshore marshes, with only 15 common to both. Species rarefaction curves indicated that more species occurred in permanent than lakeshore marshes at equal numbers of individuals sampled. However, the more heterogeneous lakeshore seed banks were estimated (Chao 2) to have greater total species richness (81) than permanent marsh (60). 4. Analysis using S&3x00F8;rensen's coefficient of similarity and DCA ordination revealed complex variation, with much greater differences between hydrological types than within them, irrespective of geographical distance. The types also differed significantly in the composition of four functional groups of species. 5. Despite the potential for dispersal of propagules via the annually pulsing river system (hydrochory), at a regional and landscape scale, diversity is maintained largely by largescale temporal hydrological heterogeneity and smaller scale spatial and topographic heterogeneity. This study investigated the effect of interorganizational Internet communication on purchasing performance. On the basis of a review of the relevant literature, three key dimensions of Internet communication behaviors were identified: frequency, diversity and formality. A model was developed to depict the antecedents of interorganizational Internet communication and the impact of such communication on purchasing performance. Responses from 284 Chinese manufacturing firms were used to test the study's hypotheses. Results revealed that the frequency, diversity and formality of Internet communication played an important role in determining the level of purchasing performance. Additionally, formality was critical to managing information flows over the Internet and preventing potential Internet information security risks. Further, results indicated that two factors, perceived Internet security risks and norms of Internet information sharing, significantly influenced Internet communication behaviors. Aim. The aim of the study was to examine the effect of the length of working hours on missed nursing care, quality of nursing care, and perceptions of the nursing practice environment. Methods. A multicenter cross-sectional investigation using online questionnaires was conducted from April 2 to May 10, 2022, in twenty nine hospitals (13 Level-III hospitals and 16 Level-II hospitals). We collected data on the working hours of nurses and nurse-reported outcomes, including missed nursing care, quality of nursing care, and nursing practice environment. Restricted cubic spline (RCS) regression models were used to examine relationships between the hours per shift and nurse-reported outcomes. Results. We investigated 12,703 nurses with a response rate of 97.33%. Nurses worked on average 7.72 (SD = 1.16) hours on the day shift and 8.92 (SD = 2.20) hours on the night shift, respectively. On the day shift, working 7.5 hours shift showed minimal missed nursing care; meanwhile, working 7–7.5 hours were correlated with the highest satisfaction of the nursing practice environment and better quality of nursing care. On the night shift, the highest missed nursing care was found for a working duration of 12 hours to the working 7 hours, with the lowest satisfaction while better quality was observed. The percentage of nurses who reported working overtime was 30.33%. Nurses who worked overtime reported lower satisfaction and poorer quality of nursing care on all shifts; moreover, working overtime showed the positive correlation to missed nursing care on the day shift, while on night shift was not statistically significant. Conclusion. Positive outcomes were observed for nurses who reported working 7–7.75 hours on the day shift and 12 hours (no more than 15 hours) on the night shift. Implications of Nursing Management. Aim: To examine the optimal gestational weight gain (GWG) for Chinese pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) based on the Chinese‐specific body mass index (BMI) classification. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using the 2017–2020 data from pregnant women with GDM in a tertiary hospital. A quadratic function model and the total predicted probability of adverse pregnancy outcomes were developed to obtain the optimal GWG. Differences in the incidence of adverse pregnancy outcomes between our optimal GWG recommendations and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) 2009 GWG guidelines were also analyzed. Results: A total of 8103 pregnant women with GDM were analyzed. Based on the Chinese‐specific BMI classification, the optimal GWG range was 11.0–17.5 kg for underweight women, 3.7–9.7 kg for normal‐weight women, −0.6 to 4.8 kg for overweight women, and − 9.8 to 4.2 kg for obese women. Excessive GWG had a higher risk of large for gestational age (LGA) (OR: 2.99, 95% CI: 2.42–3.70), macrosomia (OR: 2.35, 95% CI: 1.77–3.12), pre‐eclampsia (OR: 1.91, 95% CI: 1.37–2.65), gestational hypertension (OR: 1.65, 95% CI: 1.24–2.19), cesarean section (OR: 1.29, 95% CI: 1.15–1.44), postpartum hemorrhage (OR: 1.29, 95% CI: 1.02–1.64); insufficient GWG had a higher risk of small for gestational age (OR: 1.82, 95% CI: 1.20–2.75). Compared to the IOM 2009 GWG guidelines, the prevalence of macrosomia, LGA, and postpartum hemorrhage were significantly lower in pregnant women following the implementation of our recommended GWG range (p < 0.05). Aim: To explore the effect of thalassemia on pregnancy outcomes of women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Methods: This retrospective study reviewed the medical records of women with GDM delivered at the Chongqing Maternal and Child Health Hospital in China between July 2017 and December 2020. The live singleton pregnancies with α or β‐thalassemia were identified as the thalassemia group, included α‐thalassemia subgroup and β‐thalassemia subgroup, whereas pregnant women without thalassemia were randomly selected as the non‐thalassemia group according to a control‐to‐case ratio of 10:1 by computerized randomization. Logistic regression analyses were used to explore the potential association between thalassemia and pregnancy outcomes. Results: A total of 223 pregnant women with GDM and thalassemia were analyzed, including women with α‐thalassemia (n = 143) and β‐thalassemia (n = 80). There were no significant differences in the incidence of adverse neonatal outcomes such as preterm birth and low‐birth weight among groups. However, among pregnancy complications, significant differences were detected in the incidence of placenta increta, polyhydramnios, and postpartum anemia between the thalassemia group and the non‐thalassemia group. Logistic regression results indicated that β‐thalassemia increased the risk of polyhydramnios (odds ratio [OR] = 3.95, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.14–13.65, p = 0.030) and chorioamnionitis (OR = 3.61, 95%CI: 1.04–12.49, p = 0.043) compared with the non‐thalassemia group. Conclusion: In our study, thalassemia did not increase adverse neonatal outcomes, but β‐thalassemia increased the risk of pregnancy complications, including polyhydramnios and chorioamnionitis. Aim: To understand about the experiences and feelings of the nurses infected with COVID‐19 when caring for patients with COVID‐19. Background: With the sudden outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19), nurses take care of patients with COVID‐19 and have a very high risk of being infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) themselves. Methods: This study adopted a qualitative design of hermeneutic phenomenology. A purposeful sampling was used, and all data were collected through in‐depth semi‐structured telephone interviews then analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Results: The interview data generated 4 topics and 14 secondary topics. Four major themes were identified from this study, including 'experiences of infection', 'health belief', 'social support' and 'the pursuit of self‐worth'. Conclusions: Nurses infected by COVID‐19 experienced a physical and psychological shock. They had a strong sense of responsibility and willingness to take risks. Providing professional psychological counselling and physical rehabilitation services are crucial. Implications for Nursing Management: This manuscript provides nursing managers an understanding of the personal experiences and needs of clinical nurses in their work, especially during COVID‐19.
