Abstract: Changing high‐mountain environments are characterized by destabilizing ice, rock or debris slopes connected to evolving glacial lakes. Such configurations may lead to potentially devastating sequences of mass movements (process chains or cascades). Computer simulations are supposed to assist in anticipating the possible consequences of such phenomena in order to reduce the losses. The present study explores the potential of the novel computational tool r.avaflow for simulating complex process chains. r.avaflow employs an enhanced version of the Pudasaini ( ) general two‐phase mass flow model, allowing consideration of the interactions between solid and fluid components of the flow. We back‐calculate an event that occurred in 2012 when a landslide from a moraine slope triggered a multi‐lake outburst flood in the Artizón and Santa Cruz valleys, Cordillera Blanca, Peru, involving four lakes and a substantial amount of entrained debris along the path. The documented and reconstructed flow patterns are reproduced in a largely satisfactory way in the sense of empirical adequacy. However, small variations in the uncertain parameters can fundamentally influence the behaviour of the process chain through threshold effects and positive feedbacks. Forward simulations of possible future cascading events will rely on more comprehensive case and parameter studies, but particularly on the development of appropriate strategies for decision‐making based on uncertain simulation results. © 2017 The Authors. Alpine mass wasting events have impacts that extend past their headwater origins, sometimes reaching populated lowlands. Understanding the processes driving these sediment pulses, and how they contribute to basin‐scale sediment fluxes, is important for hazard assessment and aquatic habitat management. The Suiattle River, which drains Glacier Peak stratovolcano in Washington State, is a dominant contributor of suspended sediment in the region. Normalized for drainage area, it supplies more suspended sediment than nearly any other river in the area and more than twice as much as the White Chuck River, which drains the opposite flank of the volcano. Despite its importance to the regional sediment budget, geomorphic processes in the basin have received relatively little attention in the literature. In this study, we build on previous work to explore the magnitude, timing and triggering mechanisms of sediment loading events in the basin. We find that outburst flood‐triggered debris flows from Chocolate Glacier are of widely varying magnitude and coincide with high temperatures in the late summer. Major debris flow activity initiated in the late 1930s, with at least eight valley‐filling debris flows since then. Smaller, more recent debris flows, likely also driven by outburst floods, occur in five of seven years of complete data. In total, the small debris flows and the subsequent autumn flushing events explain ~21% of the 'anomalous' sediment load in the basin, while reworking and abrasion of the historic events may explain another ~26%. We speculate that some of the remaining unexplained 'anomalous' load could be the result of a feedback between channel lateral instability (originally triggered by the valley‐spanning debris flows) and bluff erosion. Damage, destruction and casualties related to landslide and debris flow are common phenomena in the Himalaya, especially during the summer monsoon. This fact was tragically illustrated on 22 July 1996, when Larcha, situated at the 109-km mark of the Arniko Highway, upper Bhotekoshi Valley, central Nepal, experienced a catastrophic debris flow powered by the Bhairab Kunda Stream. Of the 22 houses in Larcha, 16 were swept away, two were partially damaged and 54 people were killed in a matter of a few minutes. The event attracted attention when media linked it to a glacial lake outburst flood as a result of the fact that the source of the stream is a glacial lake. To understand the cause, initiation mechanism and deposition process, the basin area was studied from geological, geomorphologic and engineering geological points of view and the role of precipitation was evaluated. A combination of rainfall, runoff from cliff faces and stream undercutting triggered failure of the bedrock and colluvium, both on the dip and counter-dip slopes, 500 m upstream from the highway. The landslide debris dammed the channel, which was eventually breached, and deposited approximately 104 000 m3 of coarse debris, dominated by the metasediments of the Lesser Himalayan origin, and overwhelmed the village of Larcha. The debris deposit was studied for clast size, composition, texture and dimensions. Lack of sorting and the presence of abundant silt and clay in the source area helped in the initiation of debris flow. The abundance of the Lesser Himalayan metasediment clasts together with the absence of debris traces upstream from the landslide site ruled out the possibility of a glacial lake outburst flood. Holocene glaciers have contributed to an abundance of unstable sediments in mountainous environments. In permafrost environments, these sediments can contain ground ice and are subject to rapid geomorphic activity and evolution under condition of a warming climate. To understand the influence of ground ice distribution on this activity since the Little Ice Age (LIA), we have investigated the Pierre Ronde and Rognes proglacial areas, two cirque glacier systems located in the periglacial belt of the Mont Blanc massif. For the first time, electrical resistivity tomography, temperature data loggers and differential global positioning systems (dGPS) are combined with historical documents and glaciological data analysis to produce a complete study of evolution in time and space of these small landsystems since the LIA. This approach allows to explain spatial heterogeneity of current internal structure and dynamics. The studied sites are a complex assemblage of debris-covered glacier, ice-rich frozen debris and unfrozen debris. Ground ice distribution is related to former glacier thermal regime, isolating effect of debris cover, water supply to specific zones, and topography. In relation with this internal structure, present dynamics are dominated by rapid ice melt in the debris-covered upper slopes, slow creep processes in marginal glacigenic rock glaciers, and weak, superficial reworking in deglaciated moraines. Since the LIA, geomorphic activity is mainly spatially restricted within the proglacial areas. Sediment exportation has occurred in a limited part of the former Rognes Glacier and through water pocket outburst flood and debris flows in Pierre Ronde. Both sites contributed little sediment supply to the downslope geomorphic system, rather by episodic events than by constant supply. In that way, during Holocene and even in a paraglacial context as the recent deglaciation, proglacial areas of cirque glaciers act mostly as sediment sinks, when active geomorphic processes are unable to evacuate sediment downslope, especially because of the slope angle weakness. Pore‐fluid pressure (PP) plays an important role in bed erosion, but the mechanisms that control PP evolution and the resulting feedbacks on flow dynamics are unclear. Here, we develop a general formulation, allowing quantification of the propensity for PP evolution of saturated and unsaturated bed sediments. We conduct erosion experiments by systematically varying grain composition and water content of beds, for investigating effects of PP evolution on flow erosion. With increasing water content, PP shows a slight rise in deforming beds with drained behavior but significant larger rise in undrained beds. Regardless of bed composition, the erosion rate of beds presents a synchronous change tendency with PP evolution due to the loss in basal friction. PP instigates positive feedback that induces a remarkable gain of flow velocity and momentum on wet beds with undrained behavior. Our results help explain observations of volume growth and long run out of debris flows. Plain Language Summary: Debris flows are common geophysical flows consisting of debris grains and muddy water. Debris flows can grow significantly in volume and mobility as they pick up loose sediment from gully bed and banks. The destructive potential of debris flows increases with increasing flow volume and run out. This brings about great challenges for effective early warning of debris flows, design of prevention measures and mapping of hazard zones related to human settlements. It is commonly believed that flow momentum is consumed by carrying static bed sediments. However, flows can gain momentum by overriding wet bed sediments. This can be explained by pore‐pressure generation as debris flows move across wet beds. The increase of measured pore‐fluid pressure is limited for beds with a low water content, but substantial for beds with a higher water content, which strongly affects the erosion rates of bed sediments. Flow velocity and momentum on wet beds are observed to increase significantly but slightly for dryer beds as a result of the pore‐pressure feedback. These findings indicate that the debris composition of the catchment, the water content of bed sediment and the pore‐pressure development should be evaluated when making predictions on debris‐flow hazard. Debris flows can grow dramatically in volume and mobility as they override bed sediment due to the reduction in bed friction resistance caused by high pore fluid pressure (PP). However, the mechanisms that control PP evolution in overridden bed sediment are still unclear. Here, a new mathematical model clarifies how diverse styles and magnitudes of PP evolution can result from regulation of the flow diffusion and shear contraction of bed sediment. Normalization of the model equations shows that the propensity for PP generation depends on timescales of PP diffusion and deformation of the bed grains. The PP of saturated bed sediment under immobile conditions is equal to the fluid pressure at the bottom of the flow due to a non‐flux basal boundary. However, the PP of unsaturated bed sediment is lower than that of the overlying flow. PP diffusion from a debris flow into an unsaturated bed increases with the bed's permeability and water content. The shear deformation behavior changes from undrained to drained with increasing permeability or decreasing shear velocity of the saturated bed sediment, leading to a reduced magnitude of pore pressure. By contrast, the shear deformation transitions from drained to undrained behavior with increasing permeability and water content of unsaturated bed sediment. The entrainment rate and erosion pattern of bed sediment are closely related to the PP evolution and liquefaction ratio of the bed sediment due to Coulomb‐friction shear tractions. Overtopping flows in landslide dams erode and entrain materials on the dam surface resulting in erosional features that undermine the dam stability and facilitate the subsequent outburst flooding. A comprehensive understanding of dam surface evolution is therefore crucial for flood risk assessment and hazard mitigation. In this research, we study the mechanisms that influence the non‐uniform morphology evolution of landslide dam breaches (i.e., non‐linear variation of the dam surface gradient) through experiments and numerical modeling. Analog landslide dam models, constructed using unconsolidated poorly sorted soils, are exposed to different inflow discharges. We find that although the breach discharge evolves more consistently with the erosion along the sidewalls than with bed erosion, it is the erosion along the bed that controls the change in dam surface profiles. Erosion rates, expressed as a function of the difference between the flow shear stress and the apparent erosion resistance, vary at different points along the dam surface due to localized erosional features induced by scouring. The apparent erosion resistance is found to increase linearly along the dam surface. Dam failure is numerically modeled using depth‐averaged equations which assume that the complex evolution of the dam profiles is due to the coupled effects of erosion, entrainment, and channel bed collapse. Good agreement between the observed and modeled dam profiles further demonstrates that the gradual saturation of the breach flow with entrained sediment is responsible for the linear variation of the apparent erosion resistance, which in turn contributes to the formation of the surface scouring. Accurate modeling of both the erosion and the evolution of the dam surface profile is important for the prediction and mitigation of outburst floods that threaten downstream establishments. In this work, we investigate the factors that shape landslide dam surfaces during dam breaches through experiments and numerical modeling. We used landslide dam models composed of unconsolidated sediments to better understand their failure process under different inflow conditions. A numerical dam failure model captures the observed complex erosion behaviors and replicates measured dam surface profiles. We then find that non‐uniform erosion is related to the saturation of the outburst floods with sediment as it travels downstream. The saturation diminishes the flood's ability to erode and entrain more surface material. This numerical model may help enhance early warning strategies for landslide dam outburst flooding. High-magnitude outburst floods are ‘catastrophic’ geological agents, transforming landscapes through erosion and deposition within a matter of hours. Landform records of high-magnitude outburst floods can be preserved which can help us reconstruct their hydraulic properties. It is important to understand these properties, as high-magnitude floods not only drastically alter landscapes over very short time-scales, but also provide sudden and abrupt inputs of water and sediment to oceans. They pose a world-wide hazard to people, livestock, property and infrastructure. Summary: The retreat of alpine glaciers since the mid‐19th century has triggered rapid landscape adjustments in many headwater basins. However, the degree to which decadal‐scale glacier retreat is associated with systematic or substantial changes in overall coarse sediment export, with the potential to impact downstream river dynamics, remains poorly understood. Here, we use repeat topographic surveys to assess geomorphic change in four partly glaciated basins on a stratovolcano (Mount Rainier) in Washington State at roughly decadal intervals from 1960 to 2017. The proglacial extents of the four basins show distinct geomorphic trajectories, ranging from substantial and sustained net erosion to relatively inactive with net deposition. These different trajectories correspond to differences in initial (1960) valley floor gradients, and can be effectively understood as valley floor grade adjustments. Significant erosion was most often accomplished by debris flows triggered by extreme rainfall or glacial outburst floods, though a single rockfall mobilized more material than all other events combined. Year‐to‐year runoff events had little measurable geomorphic impact. Exported material tended to accumulate in broad deposits within several kilometers of source areas and largely remained there through the end of the study period. Over 10‐ to 100‐year timescales, we find that the impact of glacier retreat on coarse sediment yield may then vary substantially according to the geometry and storage trends of the newly exposed valley floor; the timing of that response may also be dictated, and potentially obscured, by stochastic and/or extreme events. Debris flows are common geological hazards in mountainous regions worldwide. The scale of debris flows can be significantly enhanced by basal erosion and bank collapse in the transportation process, resulting in an increase in casualties and property losses. However, the mechanisms of this growth are largely unclear. Here, we conduct a series of experiments to investigate the erosion of two different bed sediments (coarse‐grained and widely graded) by released flows with three different densities and two different volumes. The erosion mechanisms of bed sediments are revealed by comparing detailed sensor data for flow level, pore pressure and total normal stress. A flow nose develops on the coarse‐grained bed sediment, resulting in a high flow depth and low velocity, while a tabular flow develops on the widely graded bed sediment, leading to a low flow depth and high velocity. The mean erosion rates of the coarse‐grained bed sediment are generally higher than those of the widely graded bed sediment due to significant pore pressure developed in coarse‐grained bed sediment. The feedback effect of bed sediment on the erosion process strongly influences the flow depth and velocity, which in turn affects the mean erosion rate of bed sediment. The interaction between the overlying flow and sediment bed controls the erosion pattern: coarse‐grained bed sediment is eroded by a layer of mass movement whereas widely graded bed sediment is progressively scoured. The interaction between debris flow and bed sediment during erosion is principally attributed to pore‐pressure transmission. Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) constitute a major hazard in glacierized regions. They are particularly pronounced in the Baker River watershed (Chilean Patagonia, 48°S), where 23 events occurred between 2008 and 2020. Although GLOF deposits have previously been studied in lake settings, how modern GLOFs are recorded in fjord sediments remains mostly unknown. To address this issue, ten sediment cores collected in the fjord immediately downstream of the Baker River (Martínez Channel) were investigated and compared to the recent GLOF history of the river. Results show that sediments accumulate at 2.0 to 3.4 cm year−1 and that GLOF deposits can be distinguished from background sediments by their finer grain size (5.98 ± 0.82 μm) and lower organic carbon content (0.31 ± 0.06%), reflecting the release and transport in suspension of high amounts of glacial rock flour during GLOFs. Although 21 GLOFs from Cachet 2 Lake occurred between 2008 and 2017, the first events left a stronger imprint in the sediment, suggesting that more sediment of glacial origin was released during those initial events, possibly due to lake‐bed erosion. An older GLOF deposit was tentatively linked to the outburst of Las Lengas Lake in 1988. The sediment cores also contain fine‐grained turbidites, especially in the prodelta area. These turbidites confirm recent channel activity, but most of them seem to have been triggered by processes other than GLOFs. Overall, the results of this study suggest that GLOF deposits are distinct from typical flood turbidites. They are best identified by their low grain size and total organic carbon content, and best archived on the delta slope, away from any submarine channel influence. Finally, these results highlight the potential of fjord sediment archives to establish pre‐historical GLOF records and ultimately improve GLOF hazard assessments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Quantifying erosion rates over various spatial and temporal scales across the Tibetan Plateau and its surrounding mountains is crucial to understanding the topographic evolution of the orogen. In this work, we report a new dataset of 10Be‐derived basin‐wide erosion rates from the main tributaries and streams draining the eastern Himalayan syntaxis. The 22 basin‐wide erosion rates ranged from 78 ± 7 m Myear−1 to 3,490 ± 612 m Myear−1 across the study area. 26Al was contemporarily measured to evaluate the impact of sediment storage and non‐steady‐state erosion processes in the syntaxis region. The paired study of 10Be and 26Al reveals that several samples violated the steady‐state erosion assumption and were compatible with the scenario of perturbation of reworked sediments or deeply sourced materials introduced by landslides. For most samples, deep‐sourced materials with higher 26Al/10Be ratios were no longer perturbing the 10Be signals in river sediments. It is possible that the deep‐sourced materials had been wiped out of the basins before the collection of samples in this work. However, the perturbation of reworked sediments was observed over a range of basin scales, limiting the use of a single sediment sample as a representative erosion product for upstream basins. Compared with tectonically stable regions, the incorporation of reworked fluvial sediments, deeply sourced materials or sub‐glacial eroded materials into sampled sediments led to the decoupling between basin‐wide erosion rates and topographic or climatic indices. Caution should be taken when deriving erosion rates from rapidly eroding regions with old, deeply buried sediments such as the eastern Himalayan syntaxis, where calculated erosion rates may be highly overestimated. Rockwall slope erosion is an important component of alpine landscape evolution, yet the role of climate and tectonics in driving this erosion remains unclear. We define the distribution and magnitude of periglacial rockwall slope erosion across 12 catchments in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir in the Himalaya of northern India using cosmogenic 10Be concentrations in sediment from medial moraines. Beryllium‐10 concentrations range from 0.5 ± 0.04 × 104 to 260.0 ± 12.5 × 104 at/g SiO2, which yield erosion rates between 7.6 ± 1.0 and 0.02 ± 0.004 mm/a. Between ∼0.02 and ∼8 m of rockwall slope erosion would be possible in this setting across a single millennium, and >2 km when extrapolated for the Quaternary period. This erosion affects catchment sediment flux and glacier dynamics, and helps to establish the pace of topographic change at the headwaters of catchments. We combine rockwall erosion records from the Himalaya of Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Uttarakhand in India and Baltistan in Pakistan to create a regional erosion data set. Rockwall slope erosion rates progressively decrease with distance north from the Main Central Thrust and into the interior of the orogen. The distribution and magnitude of this erosion is most closely associated with records of Himalayan denudation and rock uplift, where the highest rates of change are recorded in the Greater Himalaya sequences. This suggests that tectonically driven uplift, rather than climate, is a first order control on patterns of rockwall slope erosion in the northwestern Himalaya. Precipitation and temperature would therefore come as secondary controls. This study explores paleoflood deposits of the Siang River, known as the Tsangpo in Tibet. The river that often experiences large floods brings down huge amount of sediment and water that adversely affect the downstream regions with large human populations in the states of northeast Himalaya and its foreland. Along it's ~300 km mountainous stretch we collected samples for sedimentological, petrographic and Sr–Nd isotopic study to explore sediment provenance and dated the paleofloods (via optically stimulated luminescence, OSL). Geomorphic indices including precipitation and a geomorphic swath profile across the Brahmaputra catchment were studied to understand the interplay of mountain relief and rainfall that determine potential zones of high erosion and sediment supply. The OSL technique indicated the Siang River experienced at least eight large floods between 7 and 1 ka, possibly under the influence of warm and wet climatic conditions. The petrographic and isotopic data suggests that the eastern Himalayan syntaxis, which has the highest uplift and exhumation rate in the area, is not always the highest sediment producing zone. Bedload transport drives morphological changes in gravel‐bed streams and sediment transfer in catchments. The large impact forces associated with bedload motion and its highly dynamic spatiotemporal nature make it difficult to monitor bedload transport in the field. In this study, we revise a physically‐based model of bedload‐induced seismic ground motion proposed by Tsai et al. (2012, htpps://doi.org/10.1029/2011GL050255) and apply it to invert bedload flux from seismic measurements alongside an Alpine stream. First, we constrain the seismic response of a braided river reach with a simple active experiment using a series of large‐rock impacts. This allows the characterization of surface wave propagation and attenuation with distance from the impact source. Second, we distinguish bedload‐generated ground vibrations from those caused by turbulent flow using frequency‐based scaling relationships between seismic power and discharge. Finally, absolute bedload transport rates are quantified from seismic measurements using inverse modeling based on a simplified formulation of bedload particle motion. The results are verified with a large data set of bedload samples, demonstrating that seismic measurements can provide an indirect measure for bedload flux with uncertainties within a factor of 5±1 for instantaneous measurements (between 0.01 and 1 kg/m/s). Larger deviations may be caused by uncertainties in the contribution of turbulent flow effects, particle impact velocity, and especially particle size that may vary with sediment supply and flow conditions. When constraining these uncertainties, instream sediment transport measurements are no longer necessarily required and seismic monitoring may provide an accurate and continuous means to investigate bedload dynamics in gravel‐bed streams. A prominent thrust‐moraine system formed in the inner van Mijenfjorden, Svalbard, during a surge event in a tributary fjord, creating a large temporary lake. Based on geomorphological, sedimentological, stratigraphical and chronological data, the lake began to form shortly after 648–551 cal. a BP. At its maximum, the lake covered an estimated area of 77 km2 with a water volume of 1.2 km3. Lake sediment up to 80 cm thick was rapidly deposited on top of terrestrial and marine sediments. At its maximum extent, the short‐lived lake was the largest of any known Holocene lake in Svalbard. Modern river discharge would fill the lake to its highest shoreline at 23 m a.s.l. in only one season. Drainage was stepwise, as evidenced by four shorelines and abandoned drainage channels. This study has taken advantage of a unique suite of data available for such an ice‐dammed lake. The results demonstrate the power of a multidisciplinary approach for recognizing lake events in the geological record, which is essential given the low preservation potential of such sediments. Abstract: Much research has been done on water‐rich mass flows, but the distinction between hyperconcentrated flows and debris flows, and whether the two are indeed different processes, continue to be debated. Here, we contribute to the ongoing discussion of these phenomena by describing and interpreting the deposit of a large landslide‐induced mass flow in the eastern Swiss Alps. About 9400 years ago, 10‐12 km3 of limestone detached from the wall of the Vorderrhein River valley and rapidly fragmented while sliding towards the valley bottom. The rock mass struck the valley floor with enormous force and liquefied at least 1 km3 of valley‐fill sediments. A slurry of liquefied sediment – the ‘Bonaduz gravel’ – traveled tens of kilometres down the Vorderrhein valley from the impact site, carrying huge fragments of rockslide debris that became stranded on the valley floor, forming hills termed ‘tomas’. Part of the flow was deflected by a cross‐valley barrier and traveled 14 km up a tributary of the Vorderrhein valley. The Bonaduz gravel is >65 m thick and fines upward from massive sandy cobble gravel at its base to silty sand at its top. Sedimentologic and geomorphic evidence indicates that Bonaduz gravel was transported as a hyperconcentated flow, likely above a basal carpet of coarse diamictic sediment that behaved as a debris flow. The large amount of water involved in the flow indicates that at least part of the Flims rockslide entered a lake. The Bonaduz deposit shares many properties with sediments left by hyperconcentrated flows generated in flumes, including normal grading and elutriation pipes produced by the rapid escape of fluids when the flow comes to rest. These properties are characteristic of non‐Newtonian laminar flows with high sediment concentrations. Results of analyses of a shallow marine sediment vibrocore from the Atlantic seafloor just west of the Aran Islands, western Ireland, are presented. The sediments range from ~16,000 to younger than 9,000 cal BP in age, based on 14C dating of foraminifers and molluscs. One sample within the core is dated at 12804 ± 125 cal BP and lies a very short distance stratigraphically below a conspicuous horizon containing isolated pebbles and sand‐size clasts, in what is an otherwise fine‐grained sequence of sediment. These outsized clasts are interpreted to be ice‐rafted debris. Approximately coeval with this horizon, the diversity and abundance of foraminifers decrease significantly and the foraminifer Nonionellina labradorica makes its first appearance in the core sediment. Stable isotope analysis shows a significant increase in values of δ18O approaching the horizon containing ice‐rafted debris. These results show the effects of a relatively sudden cooling of this part of the Atlantic Ocean at middle latitudes coincident with, or just after, the onset of the Younger Dryas event and demonstrate the extent of floating icebergs and probable later pack ice as a result of this temperature decrease. Yakutat Bay, Southeast Alaska, is characterized by significant spatial variations in sediment type and dynamics. The northwestern side is supplied by sediments from the nearby glaciers, and is affected by longshore sediment transport processes, while the southeastern side has no direct sediment input, and is affected by human activities. In situ seabed investigations can be difficult, and expensive, due to logistical challenges in such remote locations. A portable free fall penetrometer (PFFP) was deployed 149 times along 16 transects in water depths of 2-48 m. The deceleration and pore pressure records during the probe's penetration into the seabed were used to characterize the surficial sediments. Equivalents of quasi-static bearing capacity were determined using the deceleration-depth signatures, and yielded strong variabilities ranging from 5 to 107 kPa at sediment depths of 10.3-41.9 cm. Correlating the PFFP results to visual field observations and literature, a regional classification scheme, and an updated sediment distribution map were derived. The pore pressure response was correlated to the different sediment types, and was used to assess the sediment's consolidation state. At the northwestern side, an increasing pore pressure trend indicated underconsolidated cohesive sediments. At the southeastern side, clayey sediments appeared to be more consolidated except of sediments of high organic content near the populated areas. The use of the pore pressure measurements represents a novel way for rapid sediment characterization using PFFP. The presented approach to create rapidly a regional sediment classification scheme offers a time- and cost-effective method to derive seabed sediment maps in areas of difficult access and logistics. Physical properties, grain size, bulk mineralogy, elemental geochemistry and magnetic parameters of three sediment piston cores recovered in the Laurentian Channel from its head to its mouth were investigated to reconstruct changes in detrital sediment provenance and transport related to climate variability since the last deglaciation. The comparison of the detrital proxies indicates the succession of two sedimentary regimes in the Estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence ( EGSL) during the Holocene, which are associated with the melting history of the Laurentide Ice Sheet ( LIS) and relative sea-level changes. During the early Holocene (10-8.5 cal. ka BP), high sedimentation rates together with mineralogical, geochemical and magnetic signatures indicate that sedimentation in the EGSL was mainly controlled by meltwater discharges from the local retreat of the southeastern margin of the LIS on the Canadian Shield. At this time, sediment-laden meltwater plumes caused the accumulation of fine-grained sediments in the ice-distal zones. Since the mid-Holocene, postglacial movements of the continental crust, related to the withdrawal of the LIS ( c. 6 cal. ka BP), have triggered significant variations in relative sea level ( RSL) in the EGSL. The significant correlation between the RSL curves and the mineralogical, geochemical, magnetic and grain-size data suggest that the RSL was the dominant force acting on the sedimentary dynamics of the EGSL during the mid-to-late Holocene. Beyond 6 cal. ka BP, characteristic mineralogical, geochemical, magnetic signatures and diffuse spectral reflectance data suggest that the Canadian Maritime Provinces and western Newfoundland coast are the primary sources for detrital sediments in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, with the Canadian Shield acting as a secondary source. Conversely, in the lower St. Lawrence Estuary, detrital sediments are mainly supplied by the Canadian Shield province. Debris-flows are widespread natural phenomena characterized by high mobility (high velocity and long runout distance) and impact forces, which frequently cause human casualties and significant damage to infrastructure. To better understand the dynamics of such events, analyzing in particular the effect induced by the valley geometry on flow velocity, runout and mobilized volumes, in this work we reconstruct a real debris-flow event through numerical modeling. Specifically, we used a modified version of the BING model, a fluid-dynamic depth-integrated numerical model for debris flows, which has been properly modified to account for width changes along the valley. The studied event, which occurred in Scaletta Zanclea (Messina, north-eastern Sicily, Italy) on October 1, 2009, is exceptionally well constrained by field and topographic information. In this respect the flow velocity, estimated from two specific locations on the basis of field evidence, the distribution of erosional and depositional areas along the Racinazzo valley, based on the comparison of pre- and post-event digital elevation models (DEMs), and the runout distance were used as constraints to calibrate the model. Furthermore, we report a detailed description of the main event characteristics based on hydrological records and witness reports. The numerical modeling results are consistent with witness reports and the severe damage recorded in the Scaletta Marina village, and highlight the effect of the valley geometry on both the debris flow velocity and the erosion/deposition processes. The effect of changing valley width has been also quantified, resulting in accelerations of the debris in correspondence of the valley narrowing and stagnations at the plateaus. Entrainment of underlying bed sediment by a debris flow can significantly increase the debris-flow magnitude. To study this phenomenon, a theoretical approach to assessing bed-sediment entrainment is presented. The approach is based on a static approximation that bed-sediment entrainment occurs when the shearing stress of the flow is sufficiently high to overcome the basal resistance of the bed sediment. In order to delineate erodible zones in a channel, we analyze the critical condition of this static equilibrium model, and subsequently propose a new concept of a critical line to detect the entrainment reaches in a channel. Considering the spatial and temporal uncertainties of the input parameter, the approach is further incorporated within a Monte Carlo method, and the distribution of entrainment zones and post-entrainment volumes can be analyzed. This approach is illustrated by back-analysis of the 2010 Yohutagawa debris-flow event, Japan. Results from 10 000 trials of Monte Carlo simulation are compared with the in situ surveys. It is shown that the present approach can be satisfactorily used to delineate erodible zones and estimate possible entrainment volume of the event. Landscapes respond in complex ways to external drivers such as base level change due to damming events. In this study, landscape evolution modelling was used to understand and analyse long-term catchment response to lava damming events. PalaeoDEM reconstruction of a small Turkish catchment (45 km2) that endured multiple lava damming events in the past 300 ka, was used to derive long-term net erosion rates. These erosion rates were used for parameter calibration and led to a best fit parameter set. This optimal parameter set was used to compare net erosion landscape time series of four scenarios: (i) no uplift and no damming events; (ii) no uplift and three damming events; (iii) uplift and no damming events; and (iv) uplift and three damming events. Spatial evolution of net erosion and sediment storage of scenario (iii) and (iv) were compared. Simulation results demonstrate net erosion differences after 250 000 years between scenarios with and without dams. Initially, trunk gullies show less net erosion in the scenario with damming events compared with the scenario without damming events. This effect of dampened erosion migrates upstream to smaller gullies and local slopes. Finally, an intrinsic incision pulse in the dam scenario results in a higher net erosion of trunk gullies while decoupled local slopes are still responding to the pre-incision landscape conditions. Sediment storage differences also occur on a 100 ka scale. These differences behaved in a complex manner owing to different timings of the migration of erosion and sediment waves along the gullies for each scenario. Although the specific spatial and temporal sequence of erosion and deposition events is sensitive to local parameters, this model study shows the manner in which past short-lived events like lava dams have long-lasting effects on catchment evolution. Physical evidence for the drainage of glacial lakes remains relatively rare in depositional records, giving rise to much debate on the location of outlets and discharge pathways, as well as on the climate impact of the attendant meltwater forcing. Lake Ojibway developed following the withdrawal of the Laurentide Ice Sheet in northern Ontario and Quebec, Canada. The late-stage evolution of this large ice-dammed lake was influenced by the complex dynamics of the retreating ice margin, which highly complicates the identification of the termination of Lake Ojibway in glaciolacustrine sediment records. Here, we document the composition of sections of rhythmites that contain in their upper part an anomalously thick and whitish bed (10-15 cm) that is in turn overlain by ~1 m of faintly bedded rhythmites. Grain-size analyses showed that the thick whitish bed consists primarily of fine to coarse silt (2-63 µm), contrasting with the lower and upper rhythmites that are largely dominated by clay (<2 µm). The detrital carbonate content of the thick silt bed is characterized by consistently high values (2.5 to 2.8%), whereas the bounding rhythmites show lower and highly variable values. Oxygen isotope measurements further show a marked change going from typical glacial meltwater values (- -29.6 to -27.7‰; VSMOW) for the lower rhythmites and the silt bed to modern-like meteoric values (-18.4 to -14.6‰) for the uppermost rhythmites. These data suggest that this marker bed may be associated with a major drawdown event that possibly corresponds to the final drainage of Lake Ojibway. ABSTRACT: Natural damming of upland river systems, such as landslide or lava damming, occurs worldwide. Many dams fail shortly after their creation, while other dams are long‐lived and therefore have a long‐term impact on fluvial and landscape evolution. This long‐term impact is still poorly understood and landscape evolution modelling (LEM) can increase our understanding of different aspects of this response. Our objective was to simulate fluvial response to damming, by monitoring sediment redistribution and river profile evolution for a range of geomorphic settings. We used LEM LAPSUS, which calculates runoff erosion and deposition and can deal with non‐spurious sinks, such as dam‐impounded areas. Because fluvial dynamics under detachment‐limited and transport‐limited conditions are different, we mimicked these conditions using low and high erodibility settings, respectively. To compare the relative impact of different dam types, we evaluated five scenarios for each landscape condition: one scenario without a dam and four scenarios with dams of increasing erodibility. Results showed that dam‐related sediment storage persisted at least until 15 000 years for all dam scenarios. Incision and knickpoint retreat occurred faster in the detachment‐limited landscape than in the transport‐limited landscape. Furthermore, in the transport‐limited landscape, knickpoint persistence decreased with increasing dam erodibility. Stream capture occurred only in the transport‐limited landscape due to a persisting floodplain behind the dam and headward erosion of adjacent channels. Changes in sediment yield variation due to stream captures did occur but cannot be distinguished from other changes in variation of sediment yield. Comparison of the model results with field examples indicates that the model reproduces several key phenomena of damming response in both transport‐limited and detachment‐limited landscapes. Thermokarst ponds are widespread in arctic and subarctic regions, but little is known about their temporal evolution prior to human observations. This paper presents a pioneer biostratigraphic study conducted at a subarctic site with limnologically contrasted ponds located on the eastern shore of Hudson Bay, Canada. Fossil diatom and visible near infrared ( VNIR) derivative spectral analyses were performed on short sediment cores, confirming the occurrence of three distinct stratigraphic facies as already inferred from an anterior sedimentological study: a lacustrine upper facies ( UF) and a marine lower facies ( LF), separated by an organic-rich/peat transitional zone ( TZ). Diatoms were almost absent from LF, but increased significantly in both TZ and UF. Identified diatom taxa were mainly benthic species (e.g. genera Fragilaria, Pinnularia), and their down-core distribution appeared to be related to dissolved organic carbon ( DOC) and possibly pH conditions. Diatom-inferred DOC showed a decreasing trend towards the surface (potentially associated with an increase in pH), inverse to the general trend in this region, suggesting the action of other mechanisms on DOC, such as exhaustion of external inputs from limited catchments and the role of discontinuous peat layers (former surfaces of permafrost mounds) during the initial stages of pond formation. These bryophilous substrates in aerophilic habitats probably controlled diatom community composition. The combination of diatom and VNIR data revealed similar trends between (i) opal (amorphous silica) and diatom abundances; (ii) eukaryotic/prokaryotic algae ratio and anoxia or hypoxia in bottom waters; and (iii) limonite (iron oxide) and redox conditions in surface sediments. These findings indicate that diatom community changes and pond limnological evolution in the recent past were controlled mainly by autogenic processes (e.g. local vegetation/soil development, peat accumulation and erosion), rather than by allogenic forcing mechanisms (e.g. precipitation and temperature, geochemical leaching of the surrounding glaciomarine sediments). Tunnel valleys are common throughout the terrain of the Saginaw Lobe of the Laurentide Ice Sheet in southern Michigan. The set of valleys described in this paper is regularly spaced in a radial pattern behind the Kalamazoo Moraine, an ice-marginal position formed during retreat from the Last Glacial Maximum. These valleys are divided into proximal and distal groups lying north and south, respectively, of a major river valley that cross-cuts the tunnel valleys at right angles. Based on a series of rotasonic borings and core analysis, the proximal valleys are shallow, contain minimal sediment fill, and overlie fine-grained diamicton and glaciolacustrine sediment, whereas the distal valleys are deeply incised into the substrate and are partially filled with coarse sediment. The distal valleys terminate within a broad zone of high-relief, hummocky topography representing stagnation and collapse behind the Kalamazoo ice margin. The proximal valleys occur within a more subdued landscape located farther from the ice margin. Although some elements of existing genetic models are consistent with these valleys, none appears to be completely compatible with their stratigraphy and morphology. Initial incision of the valleys could have involved short-lived moderate- to high-discharge flows, followed by deposition during or after the events. The deep incision and thick, coarse sediment in distal valleys in the stagnant marginal zone probably involved supraglacial meltwater draining to the bed as the margin downwasted. Luminescence dating is used extensively to provide absolute chronologies for Late Pleistocene sediments. Nowadays, most optical dates are based on quartz optically stimulated luminescence ( OSL). However, the application of this signal is usually limited to the last ∼100 ka because of saturation of the quartz luminescence signal with dose. In contrast, the feldspar infrared stimulated luminescence ( IRSL) dose-response curve grows to much higher doses; this has the potential to extend the datable age range by a factor of 4-5 compared with quartz OSL. However, it has been known for several decades that this IRSL signal is unstable, and this instability often gives rise to significant age underestimation. Here we test against independent age control the recently developed feldspar post- IR IRSL approach to the dating of sediments, which appears to avoid signal instability. A physical model explaining our observations is discussed, and the method is shown to be accurate back to 600 ka. The post- IR IRSL signal is reduced by exposure to daylight more slowly than that from quartz and low-temperature IRSL, preventing its general application to young (e.g. Holocene) sediments. Nevertheless, this new approach is widely applicable (feldspar of appropriate luminescence behaviour is even more ubiquitous than quartz). The style of Pleistocene outwash sedimentation in the foreland of the central European Mountains (the Carpathians and Sudetes) was controlled to a large extent by the topography. The deposits of three outwash plains formed in various morphological situations in front of the Upper Odra Lobe during the Odranian glaciation (older Saalian) are described here to show the conditions of their development and to reveal the relation between outwash plain sedimentology and proglacial topography. One outwash plain was formed between the mountain front and the ice-sheet margin, which advanced into the zone of fore-mountain alluvial fans. This outwash, deposited parallel to the ice margin, was under the considerable influence of extraglacial rivers flowing from the mountains. The second outwash was deposited in a small valley dipping away from the ice sheet and successively buried by glaciofluvial sediments. It evolved from a narrow valley sandur to an unconfined outwash plain. The third one was formed in a relatively broad, dammed valley dipping towards the ice sheet, where proglacial lake base level controlled the pattern of outwash channels as well as the character of the sedimentation. The studied outwash plains have different sedimentary successions. Their sedimentary profiles differ from each other even in the neighbouring valleys, indicating that distinct depositional conditions existed at the same time in closely spaced areas. It is suggested that the glaciomarginal deposition was controlled mostly by the orientation of the valleys and the inter-valley areas relative to the ice-sheet front. Size and morphology of valleys and interfluves were also important. Depending on their orientation, the outwash plains were fed by meltwaters in various ways; the dip of their surfaces was markedly different and the dynamics of the proglacial river systems were diverse. A quantitative, three-dimensional depositional model of gravelly, braided rivers has been developed based largely on the deposits of the Sagavanirktok River in northern Alaska. These deposits were described using cores, wireline logs, trenches and ground-penetrating radar profiles. The origin of the deposits was inferred from observations of: (1) channel and bar formation and migration and channel filling, interpreted from aerial photographs; (2) water flow during floods; and (3) the topography and texture of the river bed at low-flow stage. This depositional model quantitatively represents the geometry of the different scales of strataset, the spatial relationships among them and their sediment texture distribution. Porosity and permeability in the model are related to sediment texture. The geometry of a particular type and scale of strataset is related to the geometry and migration of the bedform type (e.g. ripples, dunes, bedload sheets, bars) associated with deposition of the strataset. In particular, the length-to-thickness ratio of stratasets is similar to the wavelength-to-height ratio of associated bedforms. Furthermore, the wavelength and height of bedforms such as dunes and bars are related to channel depth and width. Therefore, the thickness of a particular scale of strataset (i.e. medium-scale cross-sets and large-scale sets of inclined strata) will vary with river dimensions. These relationships between the dimensions of stratasets, bedforms and channels mean that this depositional model can be applied to other gravelly fluvial deposits. The depositional model can be used to interpret the origin of ancient gravelly fluvial deposits and to aid in the characterization of gravelly fluvial aquifers and hydrocarbon reservoirs.
