Previous research on incidental memory in everyday settings has shown that frequent exposure to stimuli does not guarantee accurate representation in memory. In two studies, we explored the memory and metamemory of car brand logos using recall (drawing) and recognition tasks (Study 1) or a naming task (Study 2). The results showed that memory accuracy for logos was modest in the recall and recognition tasks; nevertheless, the participants' accuracy in naming the visually displayed car logos was almost perfect. The participants showed overconfidence in their ability to recall and recognize car logos prior to their performance, which was adjusted after completing the recall task. Overconfidence was absent in the naming tasks. These results replicate the modest visual memory and metacognitive adjustments in recall and recognition tasks found in previous studies and contrast with participants' better memory performance and metacognitive adjustments in the naming task. Evidence suggests that memory is involved in making simulations and predictions about the future (i.e., future thinking), but less work has examined how the outcome of those predictions (whether events play out as predicted or expected) subsequently affects episodic memory. In this investigation, we examine whether memory is better for outcomes that are consistent with predictions, or whether memory is enhanced for outcomes that are inconsistent with predictions, after the predicted event occurs. In this experiment, participants learned a core trait associated with social targets (e.g., high in extroversion), before making predictions about behaviors targets would perform. Participants then were shown behaviors the social targets actually performed (i.e., prediction outcome), which was either consistent or inconsistent with predictions. After that, participants completed a memory test (recognition; recall) for the prediction outcomes. For recognition, the results revealed better memory for outcomes that were consistent with traits associated with targets (i.e., trait‐consistent outcomes), compared to outcomes that were inconsistent (i.e., trait‐inconsistent outcomes). Finding a memory advantage for trait‐consistent outcomes suggests that outcomes that are in line with the contents of memory (e.g., what one knows; schemas) are more readily remembered than those that are inconsistent with memory, which may reflect an adaptive memory process. For recall, memory did not differ between trait‐consistent and trait‐inconsistent outcomes. Altogether, the results of this experiment advance understanding of the reciprocal relationship between episodic memory and future thinking and show that outcome of predictions has an influence on subsequent episodic memory, at least as measured by recognition. This study investigates whether individuals with bulimia nervosa (BN) have a memory bias in relation to explicit memory (cued and free recall vs. verbal and pictorial recognition tasks). Twenty-five participants diagnosed with BN and 27 normal controls (NC) were exposed to body-related, food-related, and neutral TV commercials, and then recall and recognition rates were assessed. Poorer recognition and recall of body-related stimuli was found for BN in comparison to NC, suggesting a memory bias. Results are discussed in relation to previous studies, along with suggestions as to how future studies can gain more insight into dysfunctions in information processing that can lead to the maintenance of eating disorders. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Aim The Gudjonsson Suggestibility Scale (GSS) assesses suggestibility by asking respondents to recall a short story, followed by exposure to leading questions and pressure to change their responses. Suggestibility, as assessed by the GSS, appears to be elevated in people with intellectual disabilities (ID). This has been shown to reflect to some extent the fact that people with ID have poor recall of the story; however, there are discrepancies in this relationship. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether a closer match between memory and suggestibility would be found using a measure of recognition memory rather than free recall. Method Three modifications to the procedure were presented to users of a learning disabilities day service. In all three experiments, a measure of forced-choice recognition memory was built into the suggestibility test. In experiments 1 and 2, the GSS was presented using either divided presentation (splitting the story into two halves, with memory and suggestibility tests after each half) or multiple presentation (the story was presented three times before presentation of the memory and suggestibility tests). Participants were tested twice, once with the standard version of the test and once with one of the modified versions. In experiment 3, an alternative suggestibility scale (ASS3) was created, based on real events in a learning disabilities day service. The ASS3 was presented to one group of participants who had been present at the events, and a second group who attended a different day service, to whom the events were unfamiliar. Results As observed previously, suggestibility was not closely related to free recall performance: recall was increased equally by all three manipulations, but they produced, respectively, no effect, a modest effect and a large effect on suggestibility. However, the effects on suggestibility were closely related to performance on the forced-choice recognition memory task: divided presentation of the GSS2 had no effect on either of these measures; multiple presentation of the GSS2 produced a modest increase in recognition memory and a modest decrease in suggestibility; and replacing the GSS with the ASS3 produced a large increase in recognition memory and a large decrease in suggestibility. Implications The results support earlier findings that the GSS is likely to overestimate how suggestible a person will be in relation to a personally significant event. This reflects poor recognition memory for the material being tested, rather than increased suggestibility per se. People with ID may in fact be relatively non-suggestible for well-remembered events, which would include personally significant events, particularly those witnessed recently. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Participants tend to falsely remember a nonpresented critical word after having studied a list of the word’s primary associates. We present here a Swedish version of the Deese–Roediger–McDermott paradigm, which provides a tractable method of experimentally inducing and investigating such illusory memories. In Experiment 1 it was demonstrated that the constructed stimulus material induced highly reliable false–recall and false–recognition effects, and, moreover, that veridical and false memories were associated with a similar phenomenological experience of remembering. The results from Experiment 2 indicated that the susceptibility to false recognition can be substantially reduced when participants are explicitly required to monitor the sources of their memories. Subjects (16 men and 16 women) breathing 30 per cent nitrous oxide in oxygen, or 100 percent oxygen, were tested to see if the effects of nitrous oxide on memory varied with different types of auditory stimuli and memory-testing procedures. The drug produced substantial memory impairments. These impairments were milder in forced-choice recognition than in yes/no recognition and for certain stimuli (first names of each subject's close relatives), but were not influenced by several other variations in test procedures and stimuli. Additional assessments indicated that nitrous oxide produced numerous subjective effects including some that are characteristic of psychedelic drugs. Heart rate (HR) changes during recall and recognition tasks were related to memory load and performance. Current hypotheses imply that heart rate acceleration may indicate the processing of stored information, and, thus relate to task performance. Twenty volunteers performed a recognition task with memory set size varying between five and ten items. The task was divided into input, retain, and test periods. Eight volunteers performed a recall task which was identical except for the form of the memory test. Consistent HR changes showed a deceleration prior to each task period which was followed by acceleration. HR was not influenced by memory load, but did show a small but consistent relationship to performance. In both recall and recognition experiments relatively greater acceleration in the retain period was associated with more accurate memory performance. Similar but less clear effects occurred during information input. In this period degree of deceleration also appeared related to recognition performance. We investigated the effects of scopolamine on the recall of repeated words. Subjects performed continuous recognition memory tasks both before and after the administration of scopolamine, and were asked to recall as many words from the lists as they could immediately after the recognition tasks. Cerebral blood flow was measured by H2 50 positron emission tomography during the performance of each task. Scopolamine altered performance on the recall task such that subjects were just as likely to recall words presented once as they were to recall words presented three times. In addition, scopolamine decreased cerebral blood flow during the performance of the task. Regularly, the observed probability of recognition given recall follows the Tulving-Wiseman function. However, some cases have been demonstrated as not showing this regularity. Interestingly, even these anomalous data seem to fall into a regular pattern. A good cue-target integration causes a diminished dependence between cued recall and recognition, whereas a poor cue-target integration, and cue overlap, causes an enhanced dependence between cued recall and recognition. Also a high degree of variability of goodness of encoding (in combination with trace identity) contributes to an enhanced dependence between the two tests. In addition, it should be observed that the Tulving-Wiseman function can account for those cases involving intermediate degrees of integration, or no cue overlap. In the present paper it is demonstrated that Ärlemalm and Nilsson's (1994) notion of cue-dependence can be used to interpret all recognition failure data available. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
