Diagnosing the role of internal variability over recent decades is critically important for both model validation and projections of future warming. Recent research suggests that for 1980–2022 internal variability manifested as Global Cooling and Arctic Warming (i‐GCAW), leading to enhanced Arctic Amplification (AA), and suppressed global warming over this period. Here we show that such an i‐GCAW is rare in CMIP6 large ensembles, but simulations that do produce similar i‐GCAW exhibit a unique and robust internally driven global surface air temperature (SAT) trend pattern. This unique SAT trend pattern features enhanced warming in the Barents and Kara Sea and cooling in the Tropical Eastern Pacific and Southern Ocean. Given that these features are imprinted in the observed record over recent decades, this work suggests that internal variability makes a crucial contribution to the discrepancy between observations and model‐simulated forced SAT trend patterns. Two important factors are the model errors in the simulated response to increased greenhouse gases, and natural fluctuations within the climate system that produced discrepancies between observations and models. By compositing the multi‐decadal trend patterns from CMIP6 simulations in which natural variability warms the Arctic but has a global cooling effect, we find that the majority of these model simulations also produce enhanced warming in the Barents and Kara Seas and cooling in the Tropical Eastern Pacific and Southern Ocean due to natural variability. Since these are the exact features imprinted on observed surface temperature changes over 1980–2022, our work suggests that natural variability is an important component of several noteworthy differences between models and observations. The Arctic sea ice cover has decreased rapidly over the last few decades both in extent and thickness. Here we present multi‐year (2013–2022) observations of sea ice thickness in the northwestern Barents Sea based on Upward Looking Sonar measurements and show that the winter sea ice has become thicker over the last decade. Sea ice thickness from the Pan‐Arctic Ice Ocean Modeling and Assimilation System (PIOMAS) reproduces both the observed variability and recent 10‐year trend and shows that this thickening (0.24 m decade−1) has not been seen since the 1990s. Using PIOMAS we find that the recent increase in sea ice thickness can be explained by increased sea ice freezing as a result of lower temperatures in the ocean and in the atmosphere. The recent thickening is set in the context of a long‐term thinning trend, with PIOMAS showing much thinner ice now than in the 1980s. To evaluate future changes in the climate system, the outputs from coarse‐resolution global climate models (GCMs) need to be downscaled to a finer scale, making them more directly applicable for impact assessment. Here we focus on examining the projected changes of three key climate variables (precipitation, air temperature, and wet bulb temperature) across Arizona (south‐western United States). We use daily outputs from GCMs from the sixth phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) and bias correct and downscale them to a 4‐km resolution. Through leave‐one‐out cross‐validation, we compare various bias correction methods and identify that the empirical quantile mapping approach performs the best regardless of the climate variable. Then, we analyse the projected bias‐corrected outputs for two future periods (Mid‐of‐Century: 2015–2048; End‐of‐Century: 2067–2100) with respect to the 1981–2014 period, under four shared socioeconomic pathway scenarios (SSP1‐2.6, SSP2‐4.5, SSP3‐7.0 and SSP5‐8.5). Our results show that Arizona's climate is projected to become overall warmer and wetter, more so towards the end of this century and for higher emission scenarios. Additionally, our findings project an increase in wet bulb temperature and cooling degree days, implying the ongoing warming climate's potential impacts on public health and the economy. Under global warming, the summer surface air temperature (SAT) change signal in the northern mid‐latitudes is generally the most significant, while the SAT change in North China (NC) shows distinct local characteristics. Using simulations from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 and observation from Berkeley Earth Surface Temperature, this study reveals an unusually weak signal of summer SAT change in NC since the 1960s. This uniquely weak signal can be attributed to the small net contribution of external forcings, mainly from anthropogenic greenhouse gases (GHG) and aerosols (AA). Compared to other land regions in the same latitudinal band, the GHG‐induced warming was weaker and AA‐induced cooling was stronger in NC, resulting in the weakest SAT change signal and thus the lowest signal‐to‐noise ratio. This weaker GHG‐induced warming plays a more important role in the SAT change difference between NC and other land regions in the same latitudinal zone. Under different emission scenarios in the future, the signal‐to‐noise ratio in NC will become as large as those in the other land regions in the same latitudinal band and the northern hemisphere, which is partly due to the smaller relative differences in the SAT change signal between NC and the other two regions. Humid heatwaves, characterized by high temperature and humidity combinations, challenge tropical societies. Extreme wet‐bulb temperatures (TW) over tropical land are coupled to the warmest sea surface temperatures by atmospheric convection and wave dynamics. Here, we harness this coupling for seasonal forecasts of the annual maximum of daily maximum TW (TWmax). We develop a multiple linear regression model that explains 80% of variance in tropical mean TWmax and significant regional TWmax variances. The model considers warming trends and El Niño and Southern Oscillation indices. Looking ahead, the strong‐to‐very‐strong El Niño at the end of 2023, with an Oceanic Niño Index of ∼2.0, suggests a 2024 tropical land mean TWmax of 26.2°C (25.9–26.4°C), and a 68% chance (24%–94%) of breaking existing records. This method also predicts regional TWmax in specific areas. Plain Language Summary: The heat and humidity in the tropics can be particularly challenging for people to stay comfortable and healthy. This combination of heat and moisture is described using a measure called the wet‐bulb temperature (TW). We found that these extremely humid and hot conditions on land can be predicted about 5 months in advance using a physics‐based statistical model. The forecast is possible because the peak of El Niño comes before the peak in the warmest sea surface temperatures, which affects the maximum TW on land. This prediction can help tropical societies to better prepare for extreme heat. The Arctic is notable as a region where the greatest rate of increase in precipitation associated with global warming is anticipated. The Arctic precipitation simulated by the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 models showed a strong increasing trend since the 1980s. We found that the forcing factor of the trend is a combination of the continued strengthening of greenhouse gas forcing and the leveling off of aerosol forcing dominated in earlier periods. From an energetic perspective, we found that the increased atmospheric radiative cooling and reduced sensible heat transport from lower latitudes contributed equally to the recent increase in Arctic precipitation. The combination of these two energetic factors suggests a doubling of the Arctic amplification factor for precipitation relative to that for temperature. Future Arctic precipitation will change in proportion to the temperature change, and the fractional contributions of the energetic factors will remain stable across various scenarios. However, because of global warming, precipitation is expected to increase substantially in the Arctic region compared with the global average when viewed as a percentage change from the original precipitation. The driving factors behind the rapid increase are the effects of the accelerating growth of greenhouse gas concentrations, which were previously suppressed by the increasing anthropogenic aerosol emissions before the 1980s. Based on the heat budget of the atmosphere, we identified important factors contributing to these precipitation changes. These include enhanced radiative cooling (responding locally to increased air temperature) and reduced heat transport from lower latitudes due to greater temperature increases at higher latitudes. Future precipitation will change in proportion to the temperature change while maintaining consistent fractional contributions across different scenarios. Aim: Squamate fitness is affected by body temperature, which in turn is influenced by environmental temperatures and, in many species, by exposure to solar radiation. The biophysical drivers of body temperature have been widely studied, but we lack an integrative synthesis of actual body temperatures experienced in the field, and their relationships to environmental temperatures, across phylogeny, behaviour and climate. Location: Global (25 countries on six continents). Taxa: Squamates (210 species, representing 25 families). Methods: We measured the body temperatures of 20,231 individuals of squamates in the field while they were active. We examined how body temperatures vary with substrate and air temperatures across taxa, climates and behaviours (basking and diel activity). Results: Heliothermic lizards had the highest body temperatures. Their body temperatures were the most weakly correlated with substrate and air temperatures. Body temperatures of non‐heliothermic diurnal lizards were similar to heliotherms in relation to air temperature, but similar to nocturnal species in relation to substrate temperatures. The correlation of body temperature with air and substrate temperatures was stronger in diurnal snakes and non‐heliothermic lizards than in heliotherms. Body‐substrate and body‐air temperature correlations varied with mean annual temperatures in all diurnal squamates, especially in heliotherms. Thermal relations vary with behaviour (heliothermy, nocturnality) in cold climates but converge towards the same relation in warm climates. Non‐heliotherms and nocturnal species body temperatures are better explained by substrate temperature than by air temperature. Body temperature distributions become left‐skewed in warmer‐bodied species, especially in colder climates. Main Conclusions: Squamate body temperatures, their frequency distributions and their relation to environmental temperature, are globally influenced by behavioural and climatic factors. For all temperatures and climates, heliothermic species' body temperatures are consistently higher and more stable than in other species, but in regions with warmer climate these differences become less pronounced. A comparable variation was found in non‐heliotherms, but in not nocturnal species whose body temperatures were similar to air and substrate irrespective of the macroclimatic context. Global warming is destabilizing the cryosphere, with consequences for glaciers, permafrost, sea ice and lake ice. Polar lakes have short ice‐free seasons, and small changes in ice cover duration have the potential to provoke alterations to ecosystem structure. However, these lakes are understudied, and the consequences for mixing regimes, thermal structures and biogeochemical processes remain unclear. We measured three annual cycles of dissolved oxygen, temperature and specific conductivity in a lake at ∼83°N to investigate limnological processes and their interannual variability. There were sharp interannual contrasts in lake dynamics, with state shifts in mixing, stratification and oxygen regimes due to air temperature variability and meteorological events. We also observed unusual thermal profiles that were associated with solute gradients. These striking differences underscore the sensitivity of high Arctic lakes to interannual variations in meteorological forcing, and their susceptibility to regime shifts in response to ongoing global change. Question: Ecological indicator values (EIVs) reflect species' optimal conditions on an environmental gradient, such as temperature. Averaged over a community, they are used to quantify thermophilization stemming from climate change, i.e. the reshuffling of communities toward more warm‐adapted species. In forests, understorey plant communities do not keep up with global warming and accumulate a climatic debt. Although the causes are still debated, this thermal lag may be partly explained by forest microclimate buffering. For the first time, we test whether community means of EIVs are able to capture microclimate (here, under forest canopies) temperature across, or also within forests. Location: 157 forest plots across three French deciduous forests covering a large macroclimatic gradient. Methods: To assess whether EIVs can be used to infer the mean and range of microclimate temperature in forests, we measured understorey air temperature for ca. 1 year (10 months) with sensors located 1 m above the ground. We surveyed bryophytes and vascular plants within 400‐m2 plots, and computed floristic temperature from ordinal‐scale EIVs (Ellenberg, Julve) and degree‐scale EIVs (ClimPlant, Bryophytes of Europe Traits) for both temperature and continentality, i.e. temperature annual range. Finally, we fitted linear models to assess whether EIVs could explain the mean and range of microclimate temperature in forests. Results: Vascular plant and bryophyte communities successfully reflected differences in mean annual temperatures across forests but largely failed to do so for microclimate variation within forests. Bryophytes did not perform better than vascular plants to infer microclimate conditions. The annual range of microclimate temperatures was poorly associated with ordinal‐scale EIVs for continentality but was positively correlated with degree‐scale EIVs for annual range within lowland forests, especially for vascular plant communities. Conclusion: Overall, the capabilities of EIVs to infer microclimate was inconsistent. Refined EIVs for temperature are needed to capture forest microclimates experienced by understorey species. The relative importance of oceanic modes to global surface air temperature (SAT) and terrestrial precipitation during 1934–2020 was investigated using a variety of statistical and dynamical system methods. Through singular spectrum analysis, we present the distribution of decadal (10–20‐year), multidecadal (20–50‐year), and secular (>50‐year) variabilities of global SAT and terrestrial precipitation anomalies. Three sea surface temperature modes were identified by singular value decomposition that affect the low‐frequency variabilities of global SAT and terrestrial precipitation anomalies—namely, global warming (GW), the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation (IPO), and the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO). The relative importance GW, the IPO, and the AMO in SAT and terrestrial precipitation was obtained through a normalized multivariate information flow analysis. Besides a high information flow percentage (60%) from GW to global SAT, especially over the northern Indian Ocean and tropical West Pacific, information flow from the AMO to the northwestern Pacific was also found. In terms of terrestrial precipitation, a large area with a wet trend was found over Eurasia at mid‐to‐high latitudes, and this trend was especially remarkable in the boreal winter half‐year (November–April), as compared with that in the boreal summer half‐year (May–October). By employing artificial neutral networks with a self‐organized map to cluster the key patterns of vertically integrated water vapour flux, we found that the synoptic circulation related to the wet trend is characterized by westerly flow that transports water vapour from the northeastern Atlantic to Eurasia, which is favourable for precipitation there both in the boreal winter and summer half‐year. Reproductive systems play an important role in the ecological function of species, but little is known about how climate change, such as global warming, may affect the reproductive systems of microbes. In this study, 116 Phytophthora infestans isolates sampled from five different altitudes along a mountain were evaluated under five temperature regimes to determine the effects of historical and experimental temperature on the reproductive system of the pathogen. Both altitude, a proxy for historical pathogen adaptation to temperature, and temperature used in the experiment affected the sexual reproduction of the pathogen, with experimental temperature, that is, contemporary temperature, playing a role several times more important than historical temperature. Furthermore, the potential of sexual reproduction, measured by the number of oospores quantified, increased with the temperature breadth (i.e., difference between the highest and lowest temperature at which sexual reproduction takes place) of the pathogen and reached the maximum at the experimental temperature of 21°C, which is higher than the annual average temperature in many potato‐producing areas. The results suggest that rising air temperature associated with global warming may increase the potential of sexual reproduction in P. infestans. Given the importance of sexuality in pathogenicity and ecological adaptation of pathogens, these results suggest that global warming may increase the threat of P. infestans to agricultural production and other ecological services and highlight that new epidemiological strategies may need to be implemented for future food security and ecological resilience. A two‐fold enhancement in the sensitivity of atmospheric CO2 growth rate (CGR) to tropical temperature interannual variability (ΓCGRT$$ {\varGamma}_{\mathrm{CGR}}^T $$) till early 2000s has been reported, which suggests a drought‐induced shift in terrestrial carbon cycle responding temperature fluctuations, thereby accelerating global warming. However, using six decades long atmospheric CO2 observations, we show that ΓCGRT$$ {\varGamma}_{\mathrm{CGR}}^T $$ has significantly declined in the last two decades, to the level during the 1960s. The ΓCGRT$$ {\varGamma}_{\mathrm{CGR}}^T $$ decline begs the question of whether the sensitivity of ecosystem carbon cycle to temperature variations at local scale has largely decreased. With state‐of‐the‐art dynamic global vegetation models, we further find that the recent ΓCGRT$$ {\varGamma}_{\mathrm{CGR}}^T $$ decline is barely attributed to ecosystem carbon cycle response to temperature fluctuations at local scale, which instead results from a decrease in spatial coherence in tropical temperature variability and land use change. Our results suggest that the recently reported loss of rainforest resilience has not shown marked influence on the temperature sensitivity of ecosystem carbon cycle. Nevertheless, the increasing extent of land use change as well as more frequent and intensive drought events are likely to modulate the responses of ecosystem carbon cycle to temperature variations in the future. Therefore, our study highlights the priority to continuously monitor the temperature sensitivity of CGR variability and improve Earth system model representation on land use change, in order to predict the carbon–climate feedback. Sea turtles are vulnerable to climate change since their reproductive output is influenced by incubating temperatures, with warmer temperatures causing lower hatching success and increased feminization of embryos. Their ability to cope with projected increases in ambient temperatures will depend on their capacity to adapt to shifts in climatic regimes. Here, we assessed the extent to which phenological shifts could mitigate impacts from increases in ambient temperatures (from 1.5 to 3°C in air temperatures and from 1.4 to 2.3°C in sea surface temperatures by 2100 at our sites) on four species of sea turtles, under a "middle of the road" scenario (SSP2‐4.5). Sand temperatures at sea turtle nesting sites are projected to increase from 0.58 to 4.17°C by 2100 and expected shifts in nesting of 26–43 days earlier will not be sufficient to maintain current incubation temperatures at 7 (29%) of our sites, hatching success rates at 10 (42%) of our sites, with current trends in hatchling sex ratio being able to be maintained at half of the sites. We also calculated the phenological shifts that would be required (both backward for an earlier shift in nesting and forward for a later shift) to keep up with present‐day incubation temperatures, hatching success rates, and sex ratios. The required shifts backward in nesting for incubation temperatures ranged from −20 to −191 days, whereas the required shifts forward ranged from +54 to +180 days. However, for half of the sites, no matter the shift the median incubation temperature will always be warmer than the 75th percentile of current ranges. Given that phenological shifts will not be able to ameliorate predicted changes in temperature, hatching success and sex ratio at most sites, turtles may need to use other adaptive responses and/or there is the need to enhance sea turtle resilience to climate warming. Since 1980, the Arctic surface has warmed four times faster than the global mean. Enhanced Arctic warming relative to the global average warming is referred to as Arctic Amplification (AA). While AA is a robust feature in climate change simulations, models rarely reproduce the observed magnitude of AA, leading to concerns that models may not accurately capture the response of the Arctic to greenhouse gas emissions. Here, we use CMIP6 data to train a machine learning algorithm to quantify the influence of internal variability in surface air temperature trends over both the Arctic and global domains. Application of this machine learning algorithm to observations reveals that internal variability increases the Arctic warming but slows global warming in recent decades, inflating AA since 1980 by 38% relative to the externally forced AA. Accounting for the role of internal variability reconciles the discrepancy between simulated and observed AA. The unprecedented 2021 June‐July heatwave in Western North America resulted in record‐breaking human‐perceived heat stress across the region, measured by the humidex considering both air temperature and humidity. During extended summer (June‐September), both 95th percentiles of daily maximum humidex (HX95) and air temperature (TX95) have increased over the 1940–2022 period, with even faster intensification in the last two decades (2001–2022). HX95 has increased more than TX95 because of the positive monotonic nonlinear relationship between humidex and air temperature at a given level of relative humidity. The Canadian Earth System Model version 5 (CanESM5) projects a larger increase in human‐perceived heat stress than air temperature across the region under low to high emission scenarios (HX95 increases 4.40–7.04°C and TX95 increases 2.92–4.65°C between 1981–2010 and 2041–2060). Moreover, CanESM5 projects significant increases in the frequency of HX and TX conditions that exceed the levels reached in 2021 under intermediate and high emission scenarios. Summary: Climate warming advances the onset of tree growth in spring, but above‐ and belowground phenology are not always synchronized. These differences in growth responses may result from differences in root and bud dormancy dynamics, but root dormancy is largely unexplored.We measured dormancy in roots and leaf buds of Fagus sylvatica and Populus nigra by quantifying the warming sum required to initiate above‐ and belowground growth in October, January and February. We furthermore carried out seven experiments, manipulating only the soil and not air temperature before or during tree leaf‐out to evaluate the potential of warmer roots to influence budburst timing using seedlings and adult trees of F. sylvatica and seedlings of Betula pendula.Root dormancy was virtually absent in comparison with the much deeper winter bud dormancy. Roots were able to start growing immediately as soils were warmed during the winter. Interestingly, higher soil temperature advanced budburst across all experiments, with soil temperature possibly accounting for c. 44% of the effect of air temperature in advancing aboveground spring phenology per growing degree hour.Therefore, differences in root and bud dormancy dynamics, together with their interaction, likely explain the nonsynchronized above‐ and belowground plant growth responses to climate warming. Extreme thermal conditions have been known for a long time as is evidenced by the oldest preserved historical accounts referring to weather. However, direct data, that is, air temperature measurements, which began in Europe in the 17th century, are the only reliable source of information. They provide insight into how climate evolved over the characteristic period of the climate timeline known as the Little Ice Age. This study focuses on extreme climatic phenomena, referred to here as exceptionally cold (EC) and exceptionally warm (EW) months and seasons that occurred in the early instrumental period (until 1830). The research is based on average monthly air temperature values (of different lengths) from five meteorological stations in Europe. The Central England Temperature series (CET) offers the longest series that spans 172 years whereas Padua has the shortest, 57 years. Consequently, the year 1659, which is the start date of the Central England Temperature series, marks the beginning of the study period for the research presented in this article. Thermally anomalous periods are identified based on the standard deviation of the average temperature from the corresponding long‐term average (1831–2020). The highlights of the study include the identification of the pronounced prevalence at all five stations of EC months and seasons when compared to EW months and seasons, especially in Western Europe (CET) during the Maunder Minimum. In October 2023, Scotland experienced heavy rainfall and flooding due to an atmospheric river and a quasi-stationary front. This event was unusual and different from previous flood events in Scotland. The flooding caused widespread damage, including landslides, road closures, and loss of crops. The synoptic meteorological situation involved a continuous advection of a humid air mass and a temperature and humidity contrast across the front. This study analyzes the long‐term observed changes of mean (Tmean), maximum (Tmax) and minimum (Tmin) air temperatures, relative humidity (RH) and vapour pressure deficit (VPD) at different elevation ranges across Bolivia from 1950 to 2019. The linear trends in air temperature series present a significant increase, with no substantial seasonal or spatial differences. On an annual basis, RH exhibited a non‐significant decrease (−0.08% decade−1), while VPD showed a significant increase (0.01 hPa decade−1) (p < 0.05). Although prior research has suggested that highland elevations experience faster warming than the global average, we have not identified a distinct correlation between elevation gradients and differential warming rates in Bolivia. Future research could investigate elevation‐dependent climate trends by examining seasonal and monthly patterns of climatic variables in relation to topographical gradients in various highland regions. The observed Eurasian winter surface cooling from the 1990s to the early 2010s, which is contrary to global warming, has been extensively studied. Previous studies revealed that the surface cooling trend has significantly weakened in the past decade. Based on large‐ensemble simulations, this study reveals that the weakening of Eurasian surface cooling is primarily driven by the atmospheric internal variability, which coincides with the weakening of Arctic mid‐tropospheric warming and Eurasian mid‐tropospheric cooling. Negative Arctic Oscillation (−AO) and Ural blocking (UB) in combination dominate the intensity of Arctic mid‐tropospheric warming and Eurasian mid‐tropospheric cooling. In the future, there is a possibility that the severe Eurasian cooling trend with comparable magnitude to that during 1990–2013 may reemerge accompanied with Arctic mid‐tropospheric warming, in response to the decadal strengthening of −AO and UB. This may occur before the 2050s, when the atmospheric internal variability is able to overwhelm the effects of greenhouse gases. The Greenland Ice Sheet is a leading contributor to global sea‐level rise because climate warming has enhanced surface meltwater runoff. Melt rates are particularly sensitive to air temperatures due to feedbacks with albedo. The primary melt‐albedo feedback, fluctuation of seasonal snowlines, however, is determined not only by melt but also by antecedent snowfall which could delay the onset of dark glacier ice exposure. Here we investigate the role of snowfall versus air temperatures on ice sheet melt‐albedo feedbacks using satellite remote sensing and atmospheric reanalysis data. We find several lines of evidence that snowline fluctuations are driven primarily by air temperatures and that snowfall is a secondary control. First, standardized linear regressions indicate that the timing of glacier ice exposure is nearly twice as sensitive to air temperatures than antecedent snowfall. Second, in 74% of the ablation zone by area, winter snowfall rates are not significantly correlated with winter air temperatures. This relationship implies that ice sheet melt due to climate warming is unlikely to be compensated by higher snowfall rates in the ablation zone. Third, we find no significant change in snowfall rates in the ablation zone during our 1981–2021 study period. Our findings demonstrate that snowfall is unlikely to reduce future ice sheet melt and that ice sheet meltwater runoff should be accurately predicted by air temperatures. Although given the importance of melt‐albedo feedbacks, ice sheet models that parameterize albedo or are coupled with regional climate models are likely to provide the most accurate projections of mass loss. The air temperature difference is an essential indicator to measure weather and climate change. The Tibetan Plateau (TP) is a sensitive area to global climate change. The study on its temperature difference variations is of great significance for further understanding the evolution of weather and climate systems, and scientific disaster prevention and mitigation. In this study, the spatio‐temporal evolution characteristics of the temperature difference on daily, monthly, seasonal and annual scales and their possible causes are analysed based on the daily observations at 59 meteorological stations over the TP from 1961 to 2020 and the circulation indexes such as the East Asian summer monsoon, South Asian summer monsoon, midlatitude westerly and TP summer monsoon. The results indicate that the diurnal temperature range (DTR) on the TP tends to decrease from 1961 to 2020. Compared with the situation in the late 20th century, the annual average of the DTR in the eastern TP turns from a nonsignificant increasing trend into a pronounced decreasing trend, while that in the western TP maintains a decreasing trend. This phenomenon is primarily influenced by the minimum and maximum temperature, precipitation and atmospheric circulations. The standardized temperature difference at different temporal scales shows decreasing trends and is distributed in north–south and east–west distribution patterns. The annual temperature range is mainly influenced by the remarkable increase of the minimum temperature, especially in the northern and southeastern TP. Besides, the increases of maximum temperature and precipitation also affect the annual temperature range. In terms of the seasonal temperature range, it is dramatically influenced by different meteorological factors, especially in the northern TP. The monthly temperature range (Mon‐TR) is dramatically influenced by the maximum and minimum temperature in the first and second half years, respectively. Moreover, the circulation systems, such as the midlatitude westerly, South Asian summer monsoon and TP summer monsoon, are the main influencing factors of the temperature difference variations on the TP. The midlatitude westerly have a large influence on Mon‐TR in June and September, and the significantly influenced stations reaches 54.2% and 35.6%. The impact stations of the TP summer monsoon on Mon‐TR is the largest in August, and the significantly influenced stations is 39%. In July, the influenced stations of the TP summer monsoon and South Asian summer monsoon on the Mon‐TR reaches 30.5%–33.9%. The influenced area of the Mon‐TR in June is largest affected by single summer monsoon or westerly index. Previous studies have shown that the warming mechanisms and their influencing factors have changed in the TP since the 21st century. This article discusses the reasons for shortening snow cover duration in the Western Sudetes, considering local changes in: air temperature; amount and type of precipitation; sunshine duration and atmospheric circulation leading to changes in the number of days with snow cover and its depth; and its start and end dates. All factors were linked to the exposure and relief of the study area. The analysis was made for the winter seasons (Nov–Apr) 1961/1962–2020/2021. It was found that the primary reasons for the shortening of snow cover duration in the Western Sudetes are: a multi‐year increase in air temperature and sunshine duration; changes in precipitation patterns—a decrease in the proportion of solid precipitation, changes in atmospheric circulation—including an increase in anticyclonic circulation types with sunny weather, especially in April (snow cover disappears in most of the elevation profile of the Sudetes); and less cyclonic weather types. The above factors synergistically affect the lower snow depth, and fewer days with solid precipitation, which promotes its faster spring ablation. In the subsequent 30 years (climatological norms), there is a successive shortening in its duration. On the snow cover start dates, there are no clear trends in the direction and rate of change. On end dates, negative trends are observed, in most cases statistically significant. The rate of change for the end dates of snow cover is about twice as high as the start dates. The rate of decline in snow cover is higher at stations at similar altitudes with northern macro‐exposure than southern. The results correspond with other studies from Europe and the world on the earlier disappearance of snow cover. Phenotypic plasticity might increase fitness if the conditions under which it evolved remain unaltered, but becomes maladaptive if the environment no longer provides reliable cues for subsequent conditions. In seasonal environments, timing of reproduction can respond plastically to spring temperature, maximizing the benefits of a long season while minimizing the exposure to unfavorable cold temperatures. However, if the relationship between early spring temperatures and later conditions changes, the optimal response might change. In geothermally heated ecosystems, the plastic response of flowering time to springtime soil temperature that has evolved in unheated areas is likely to be non-optimal, because soil temperatures are higher and decoupled from air temperatures in heated areas. We therefore expect natural selection to favor a lower plasticity and a delayed flowering in these areas. Using observational data along a natural geothermal warming gradient, we tested the hypothesis that selection on flowering time depends on soil temperature and favors later flowering on warmer soils in the perennial Cerastium fontanum. In both study years, plants growing in warmer soils began flowering earlier than plants growing in colder soils, suggesting that first flowering date (FFD) responds plastically to soil temperature. In one of the two study years, selection favored earlier flowering in colder soils but later flowering in warmer soils, suggesting that the current level of plastic advance of FFD on warmer soils may be maladaptive in some years. Our results illustrate the advantages of using natural experiments, such as geothermal ecosystems, to examine selection in environments that recently have undergone major changes. Ongoing climate warming has strong moderating control over aquatic processes, such as ice cover duration, length of the growing season, vertical mixing patterns, thermal stratification, and the availability of light and nutrients. These fundamental mechanisms in turn influence the population dynamics of aquatic organisms such as diatoms and chrysophytes.In our study, over 3.5 years with contrasting meteorological conditions, we investigated eutrophic Lake Żabińskie located in northeast Poland. By combining observational data of meteorological conditions, physicochemical variables measured in the water column, and modern sedimentation, we sought to explain the relationships between changes in meteorological conditions, dynamics of total fluxes and the taxonomic composition of diatoms and chrysophyte cysts.Our results show the direct influence of meteorological conditions on physicochemical conditions and their indirect influence on total diatom and chrysophyte cyst fluxes and taxonomic succession. The former refers to the importance of air temperature and wind speed in shaping the mixing regime of Lake Żabińskie, while the latter refers to the nutrient cycling driven by changes in the mixing regime, which in turn influences the formation of biotic signals in the sediment. Our study also revealed that the biotic response to unusual meteorological conditions that occurred in 2020 (i.e., warm winter without ice cover) differed from typical years in terms of the phenology of diatom and chrysophyte cyst blooms. However, this response was not as pronounced as in lakes with lower productivity and can be attributed to the already turbid conditions and high nutrient concentrations, which alter the threshold for noticeable changes to occur. The taxonomic composition of diatoms and chrysophyte cysts also changed in response to changes in meteorological conditions.Complex interactions between physical and chemical conditions masked the direct influences of meteorological conditions on lake biota under eutrophic conditions. Nevertheless, high‐resolution monitoring enabled indirect links to be recognised. Both phenology and turnover in community composition responded to changes in meteorological conditions.These results show how ongoing climate change might affect biota in eutrophic lakes in the future. The frequency and magnitude of global warming events varies greatly across different regions and countries. The climatic diversity for China and future warming features are projected across 12 climatic zones based on the ensemble of the five well‐performing high‐resolution downscaled climate models for each zone. There are warming patterns for the mean near‐surface air temperature (Tm), maximum near‐surface air temperature (Tmax), minimum near‐surface air temperature (Tmin) as well as heatwave and frost events. Under RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios, the three indices (i.e., Tm, Tmax and Tmin) countrywide are likely to increase at respective rates of 0.30–0.31 and 0.64–0.67°C·decade−1. The extent of frost event (FE) are projected to decrease at a rate of −1912 and −4442 day·km−2·decade−1 while the extent of heatwave event (HE) increase at a rate of 1116 and 3557 day·km−2·decade−1 under RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios, respectively. A higher increment in temperatures, a decreasing trend in diurnal temperature range (DTR), frost days and FE are highlighted in the western and northern zones, while these trends are opposite in southern zones. The warming is likely to get faster in the current colder zones (western and northern zones) while heatwave is more intense and severe in Jianghuai, Jianghan, the south Yangzi River, South China and Xinjiang. The soil freeze-thaw cycle in the permafrost regions has a significant impact on regional surface energy and water balance. Although increasing efforts have been made to understand the responses of spring thawing to climate change, the mechanisms controlling the global interannual variability of the start date of permafrost frozen (SOF) remain unclear. Using long-term SOF from the combinations of multiple satellite microwave sensors between 1979 and 2020, and analytical techniques, including partial correlation, ridge regression, path analysis, and machine learning, we explored the responses of SOF to multiple climate change factors, including warming (surface and air temperature), start date of permafrost thawing (SOT), soil properties (soil temperature and volume of water), and the snow depth water equivalent (SDWE). Overall, climate warming exhibited the maximum control on SOF, but SOT in spring was also an important driver of SOF variability; among the 65.9% significant SOT and SOF correlations, 79.3% were positive, indicating an overall earlier thawing would contribute to an earlier frozen in winter. The machine learning analysis also suggested that apart from warming, SOT ranked as the second most important determinant of SOF. Therefore, we identified the mechanism responsible for the SOT-SOF relationship using the SEM analysis, which revealed that soil temperature change exhibited the maximum effect on this relationship, irrespective of the permafrost type. Finally, we analyzed the temporal changes in these responses using the moving window approach and found increased effect of soil warming on SOF. Tropical overshooting deep convections (ODCs) play a vital role in vertical transport of boundary layer pollutants, especially short‐lived species, to upper troposphere and lower stratosphere, with important implications for stratospheric ozone and climate. We use simulations from a global cloud‐system resolving model, Nonhydrostatic Icosahedral Atmosphere Model (NICAM), to study ODC changes from historical period to the end of the 21st century. NICAM well reproduces Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission‐satellite observed ODC spatiotemporal patterns. The future occurrences of ODCs with cloud top height above 15.5, 16.9, and 18.4 km scaled by the global temperature increase will increase by 7%/K, 27%/K, and 90%/K, respectively, over ocean where the atmosphere is becoming warmer and wetter. The corresponding changes are −1%/K, 10%/K, and 37%/K over land where the atmosphere will become hotter but drier. Relative to tropical cold point tropopause height, ODCs will only change by 3%/K, with 6%/K over the ocean but −3%/K on land. The NICAM simulations predict that by the end of the 21st century (2075–2104) versus the historical period (1979–2008) with a global‐mean surface air temperature increase of 2.67 K, ODC occurrences with cloud tops reaching above 15.5, 16.9, and 18.4 km will increase by 14%, 59%, and 189%, respectively. Thus ODCs with higher cloud tops increase by a larger fraction than ODCs with lower cloud tops. The corresponding changes in ODC occurrences over the future warmer (hotter) and wetter (drier) oceanic (terrestrial) environments will be 20% (−2%), 72% (27%), and 240% (98%). Thus ODCs over ocean generally increase at a faster rate than over land. With tropical cold point tropopause height as a reference level, which will increase from 17.2 to 18.1 km, ODCs will increase by only 8% over the tropics, with 15% over ocean but decrease by −8% over land. Cold‐season methane (CH4) emissions may be poorly constrained in wetland models. We examined cold‐season CH4 emissions simulated by 16 models participating in the Global Carbon Project model intercomparison and analyzed temporal and spatial patterns in simulation results using prescribed inundation data for 2000–2020. Estimated annual CH4 emissions from northern (>60°N) wetlands averaged 10.0 ± 5.5 Tg CH4 yr−1. While summer CH4 emissions were well simulated compared to in‐situ flux measurement observations, the models underestimated CH4 during September to May relative to annual total (27 ± 9%, compared to 45% in observations) and substantially in the months with subzero air temperatures (5 ± 5%, compared to 27% in observations). Because of winter warming, nevertheless, the contribution of cold‐season emissions was simulated to increase at 0.4 ± 0.8% decade−1. Different parameterizations of processes, for example, freezing–thawing and snow insulation, caused conspicuous variability among models, implying the necessity of model refinement. During the last decades, the Baltic Sea has been among the fastest warming seas in the world. The warming is mainly driven by increasing air temperatures but deeper water layers can also be warmed by lateral advection of heat. By analyzing a 159 years long (1850–2008) hindcast simulation of the Baltic Sea, we link the exceptionally strong bottom water warming in the western Baltic Sea to a shift in the seasonality of saltwater inflows from the North Sea to the Baltic Sea. Over the model period, warm summer and early autumn inflows have increased while cold winter inflows have decreased. Sensitivity experiments reveal that these changes were partly driven by a shift in river runoff seasonality. The strong warming could lead to faster oxygen depletion in the affected layers and thus have ecological consequences. The Arctic is rapidly warming, and tundra vegetation community composition is changing from small, prostrate shrubs to taller, erect shrubs in some locations. Across much of the Arctic, the sensitivity of shrub secondary growth, as measured by growth ring width, to climate has changed with increased warming, but it is not fully understood how shrub age contributes to shifts in climate sensitivity.We studied Siberian alder, Alnus viridis ssp. fruticosa, a large nitrogen‐fixing shrub that has responded to climate warming with northward range expansion over the last 50 years. We used serial sectioning of 26 individual shrubs and 94 cross‐sections to generate a 98‐year growth ring chronology, including one 142‐year‐old, Siberian alder in Northern Alaska. We tested how secondary growth sensitivity to climate has changed over the past century (1920–2017) and how shrub age affects climate sensitivity of alder growth through time.We found that over time, alder growth as expressed by the stand chronology became more sensitive to July mean monthly air temperature. Older shrubs displayed higher sensitivity to June and July temperature than younger alders. However, during the first 30 years of growth of any shrub, temperature sensitivity did not differ among individuals. In addition, the June temperature sensitivity of growth series from individual cross‐sections depended on the age of the attached shrub.Our results suggest that age contributes to climate sensitivity, likely through modifying internal shrub carbon budgets by changing size and reducing alder's dependence on N‐fixation over time. Older, more sensitive alder may enhance C and N‐cycling while having greater recruitment potential. Linking alder age to climate sensitivity, recruitment and total N‐inputs will enable us to better predict ecosystem carbon and nitrogen cycling in a warmer Arctic. A changing climate reshapes the range distribution of many organisms, and species with relatively low thermal optima, like many salmonids, are increasingly expected to face local population extinctions at lower latitudes. Understanding where and how fast these changes are happening is of pivotal importance for successful mitigation and conservation efforts. We used an extensive electrofishing database to explore temporal trends of juveniles of brown trout Salmo trutta in 218 locations from 174 Swedish streams, over the last 30 years (1991–2020). We hypothesized that 1) declines in abundance have occurred predominately in the warmer, southern regions, while increases have occurred in the colder, northern regions, 2) larger stream sizes may partly offset negative effects of climate, and 3) migrating and resident populations are affected differently by a warming climate. We found that abundance of brown trout juveniles generally declined in warmer regions especially in smaller streams (≤ 6 m wide), while the abundance increased in colder regions. In larger streams, negative effects of higher temperatures were seemingly buffered, as we found lower rates of decline or even positive trends. The rate of change (i.e. the slopes of the trends in abundance) was more pronounced towards the climate extremes, and was on average zero in regions with a normal annual air temperature (average temperature over 30 year period) around 5–6 °C. Warmer climate had stronger effects on migrating compared to resident populations, suggesting that climate‐induced loss of stream connectivity could be an additional factor that hinders recruitment in anadromous populations in a changing climate. Considering predictions of increasing temperatures and frequency of summer droughts, management of cold‐water salmonid populations should focus on conserving and restoring riparian vegetation, wetlands, climate and thermal refugia, and habitat integrity overall. While the relationships between dry land surface conditions, heat, and aridity have been well‐established, few studies have addressed whether global warming will affect the ability of wet conditions to moderate high temperatures and atmospheric aridity. Using Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 models, we demonstrate that absolute changes in the monthly maximum temperature distribution during Central North American summers strongly outweigh the historical cooling effect of high precipitation and soil moisture conditions. Although wet conditions nearly always prevent concurrent extreme temperatures in the baseline period, these conditions are 40%–48% and 96%–98% less effective at 1 and 2° of global warming, respectively. However, high precipitation and soil moisture partially retain the ability to constrain concurrent high vapor pressure deficit conditions below historical thresholds at 1–2° of warming. Our results highlight the growing vulnerability of Central North America to warmer temperatures and drier atmospheric conditions, even during periods of high precipitation and soil moisture. The depth of the mixed layer is a major determinant of nutrient and light availability for phytoplankton in stratified waterbodies. Ongoing climate change influences surface waters through meteorological forcing, which modifies the physical structure of fresh waters including the mixed layer, but effects on phytoplankton biomass are poorly known.To determine the responses of phytoplankton biomass to the depth of the mixed layer, light availability and associated meteorological forcing, we followed daily changes in weather and water column properties in a boreal lake over the first half of a summer stratification period.Phytoplankton biomass increased with the deepening of the mixed layer associated with high wind speeds and low air temperature relative to the temperature of the mixed layer (Tair−Tmix < 0), whereas heatwave conditions—shallow mixed layer driven by high Tair−Tmix value and low wind speed—reduced the biomass.Improving light availability from low to moderate light conditions increased the phytoplankton biomass, while the highest light availability was associated with low phytoplankton biomass.Our study demonstrates that the climatic impact‐drivers wind speed and Tair−Tmix are major drivers of mixed layer depth, which controlled phytoplankton biomass during the early summer stratification period. The onset of periods with very high or low air temperatures has aroused general interest for a long time, which is understandable since it has many dangerous effects directly affecting humans. Such perilous climatic phenomena include exceptionally cold and exceptionally warm months, which this study investigates for all Europe and for its five physico‐geographic regions over the 190‐year period of 1831–2020. Therefore, the research in this paper includes two periods characteristic of the history of climate – the late Little Ice Age (LIA) and present‐day warming. The studies are based on average monthly air temperature values from 40 weather stations in Europe. In this paper, exceptionally cold months (ECMs) or exceptionally warm months (EWMs) are considered to have occurred when the average air temperature at a station differed from the respective long‐term average by at least two standard deviations. The highlights of the study include the identification of a drop in the number of ECMs by 20 over the entire 190‐year period, and a highly statistically significant increase in EWMs by 44 between 1980 and 2020. China's surface air temperature is increasing due to global warming, so it is interesting that how low temperatures would be changed during the growth period of winter wheat in future. We focused on the low temperatures of winter wheat from 2021 to 2050, using temperatures under the high emission scenario Representative Concentration Pathway 8.5 (RCP8.5) projected by the RegCM4.4 regional climate model. The results showed that the annual mean temperature was projected to increase by 0.42°C⋅decade−1 in the northern and by 0.35°C⋅decade−1 in the southern winter wheat region. Furthermore, the temperature was expected to increase rapidly in spring, which could advance the dates of flowering and the start of the grain‐filling period. Using the genetic parameters determined by the calibration and validation of WOFOST and bias‐corrected projected meteorological data, simulations of winter wheat growth were performed over the winter wheat region for 2021–2050. The simulated number of days to the flowering period of winter wheat for 2041–2050 was on average 6.5 days less than in 2021–2030, due to the spring warming. Because of the earlier start of the growing season, winter wheat could face negative effects by being subjected to low temperatures. Indeed, the number of low‐temperature days was projected to increase by 110% from 2041 to 2050 compared to 2021–2030, and the number of killing degree days (KDDs) is projected to increase by 120% at the same time. If the number of days to flowering did not change, the number of low‐temperature days and KDDs only changed slightly, showing that the negative influence of low temperature was mainly caused by the advancement of the flowering date. Global climate change is expected to have pervasive effects on the diversity and distribution of species, particularly ectotherms whose body temperatures depend on environmental temperatures. However, these impacts remain difficult to predict, in part because ectotherms may adapt or acclimate to novel conditions or may use behavioural thermoregulation to reduce their exposure to stressful microclimates.Here we examine the potential for physiological and behavioural changes to mitigate effects of environmental warming on five species of ants in a temperate forest habitat subject to urban warming.We worked in eight urban and eight non‐urban forest sites in North Carolina, USA; sites experienced a 1.1°C range of mean summer air temperatures. At each site, we documented species‐specific microclimates (ant operative temperatures, Te) and ant activity on a transect of 14 bait stations at three times of day. In the laboratory, we measured upper thermal tolerance (CTmax) and thermal preference (Tpref) for each focal species. We then asked whether thermal traits shifted at hotter sites, and whether ants avoided non‐preferred microclimates in the field.CTmax and Tpref did not increase at warmer sites, indicating that these populations did not adapt or acclimate to urban warming. Consistent with behavioural thermoregulation, four of the five species were less likely to occupy baits where Te departed from Tpref. Apparent thermoregulation resulted from fixed diel activity patterns that helped ants avoid the most inappropriate temperatures but did not compensate for daily or spatial temperature variation: Hotter sites had hotter ants.This study uses a novel approach to detect behavioural thermoregulation and sublethal warming in foraging insects. The results suggest that adaptation and behaviour may not protect common temperate forest ants from a warming climate, and highlight the need to evaluate effects of chronic, sublethal warming on small ectotherms. Both theory and prior studies predict that climate warming should increase attack rates by herbivores and pathogens on plants. However, past work has often assumed that variation in abiotic conditions other than temperature (e.g. precipitation) do not alter warming responses of plant damage by natural enemies. Studies over short time periods span low variation in weather, and studies over long time‐scales often neglect to account for fine‐scale weather conditions.Here, we used a 20+ year warming experiment to investigate if warming affects on herbivory and pathogen disease are dependent on variation in ambient weather observed over 3 years. We studied three common grass species in a subalpine meadow in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, USA. We visually estimated herbivory and disease every 2 weeks during the growing season and evaluated weather conditions during the previous 2‐ or 4‐week time interval (2‐week average air temperature, 2‐ and 4‐week cumulative precipitation) as predictors of the probability and amount of damage.Herbivore attack was 13% more likely and damage amount was 29% greater in warmed plots than controls across the focal species but warming treatment had little affect on plant disease. Herbivory presence and damage increased the most with experimental warming when preceded by wetter, rather than drier, fine‐scale weather, but preceding ambient temperature did not strongly interact with elevated warming to influence herbivory.Disease presence and amount increased, on average, with warmer weather and more precipitation regardless of warming.Synthesis. The effect of warming over reference climate on herbivore damage is dependent on and amplified by fine‐scale weather variation, suggesting more boom‐and‐bust damage dynamics with increasing climate variability. Plant disease was generally unresponsive to warming, which may be a consequence of our coarse disease estimates that did not track specific pathogen species or guilds. Extreme temperatures were considered natural hazards because they could increase morbidity and mortality. Understanding the extreme temperature changes at different warming levels is crucial to climate change mitigation and adoption for human health. This study projected climate change effects on the intensity, occurrence, and duration of extreme temperatures in Taiwan with 2 and 4°C global warming scenarios using the Weather Research and Forecasting model. The future climate simulations were conducted with the pseudo‐global warming approach, and the future climate changes were obtained from the ensemble mean of simulations in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project 5. The simulated daily mean temperature increased by 1.40 and 3.09°C under 2 and 4°C global warmings. In a warming world, the daily maximum temperature was projected to increase by 1.35–3.00°C, whereas the daily minimum temperature was even higher, leading to weaker diurnal temperature variation in most regions. The simulation results show that intensified heatwaves with frequent and prolonged durations become par for the course, whereas extremely cold days disappear gradually. The occurrence of heatwaves in the future is projected to be five times that in the current climate. Comparing the global warming impacts over different land‐use types, the heatwave occurrence over urban areas rose more quickly than over other land‐use types; forests are less vulnerable to global warming. On the contrary, the changes in extremely cold days over urban areas were weaker than over other land‐use types. Overall, the effects of global warming on temperature revealed that extreme events were more severe with increased temperature than with the mean state of air temperature. High‐resolution simulation is important for understanding climate change and its impact over regions with complex terrain. Northern Asia (NA) is such a region and sensitive to global warming. However, the performance of the regional model over NA is still unclear. In this study, we conducted a two‐decade‐long high‐resolution (25 km) simulation over NA using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model forced by the ERA‐Interim reanalysis and then evaluated the performance of WRF against the observations. The results show that the WRF simulation, set up with selections of the physical schemes, can reasonably reproduce the spatial and temporal features of surface air temperature and precipitation over NA. In addition, the WRF simulation can add more regional details on the climate features than the ERA‐Interim data, especially over the NA regions with complex terrain. The spatial‐pattern correlation coefficient of summer precipitation over NA between the WRF simulation and observations is higher than that of the ERA‐Interim data. WRF can reasonably reproduce the annual cycles of precipitation. Moreover, the observed year‐to‐year variations in summer surface air temperature and precipitation over most NA subregions could be generally captured by the WRF. In conclusion, although systemic model bias still exists, the evaluations in this study indicate that WRF shows reasonable performance in a high‐resolution simulation of climate over NA, consequently providing a scientific basis for future simulation studies over the region. In the context of global warming and the release of projection results from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6), it is important to conduct research on climate change on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) which exhibits unique geographic characteristics and complex climatic conditions. Using 10 general circulation models (GCMs) from CMIP6 corrected for bias by the daily translation (DT) method, we investigated the projected changes in precipitation and air temperature for the mid‐term (2031–2050) and long‐term (2061–2080) of the 21st century on the TP after evaluating the reliability of the bias correction, for four scenarios based on different combinations of shared socioeconomic pathways and representative concentration pathways. The multimodel ensembles (MMEs) indicated that the projected annual precipitation shows an increasing trend for the mid‐term and long‐term periods, with the projected increase for the long‐term primarily concentrated in areas with less precipitation. Meanwhile, the future precipitation changes exhibit a significant elevation dependency. The rate of increase of precipitation firstly fluctuates and then gradually increases along with the elevation increasing from 1,500 to 5,800 m. The valley value of rate mainly appears in two elevation zones (2,200–2,600 m and 3,400–3,800 m). The projected temporal changes in annual air temperatures reveal obvious warming over the TP. The projected warming is overall more pronounced with increase in elevation; however, it reaches a peak at approximately 5,000–5,200 m and then slows down slightly, indicating that warming is not dependent on elevation in the higher elevation zones. The study specifies the circulation conditions, the frequency of occurrence, long‐term changes, and thermal characteristics of air masses over east‐central Europe in the years 1951–2020. The division of air masses utilized by The Polish Institute of Meteorology and Water Management was used, where, based on the geographical location of the source areas, Arctic (A), Polar maritime fresh (mPf), Polar maritime old (transformed) (mPo), Polar maritime warm (mPw), Polar continental (cP), and Tropical (T) air masses are distinguished. It has been shown that western circulation dominates in this area (60% of days on average), during which the advection of maritime air masses occurs. The share of Arctic air mass flowing from the north (about 12% of days a year) and Tropical air mass from the southern sector (4% of days) is clearly smaller. The results of the research have shown that the frequency of the majority of the analysed air masses was subject to short‐term changes in the studied period. On the other hand, long‐term changes in this frequency concerned two air masses flowing from lower latitudes (mPw and T). In the case of mPw, in the period 1951–2020 there was a significant increase in frequency, not only on a yearly basis, but also in all seasons. In the last two decades, the frequency of Tropical air mass has also increased significantly, while the increase took place only in the summer period. Therefore, the increase in air temperature recorded in east‐central Europe since the 1990s, mainly in the warm half of the year, should to a large extent be attributed to both the greater frequency of the inflow of air masses from lower latitudes (mPw and T) and the increase in temperature in virtually all separated air masses, which in turn is a result of progressing global warming. Ongoing global warming particularly affects the coldest regions of our planet, where thunderstorm activity is considered to be the lowest. Scientific studies usually predict that lightning will become more frequent in polar areas in a warmer world. The aim of this study is to test this hypothesis and present the current knowledge on thunderstorm occurrence at high latitudes (>60°) based on SYNOP data from manned WMO stations operating from 2000 to 2019. According to this source, most thunderstorm events at high latitudes occur in summer (85%), when the air temperature ranges from 15 to 25°C (70%), during the days with positive temperature anomalies (75%) and negative sea‐level pressure anomalies (65%). The highest thunderstorm activity is observed over inland areas, especially in the European part of Russia. The changes in thunderstorm frequency are only visible at certain WMO manned stations and mostly during the summer months. The regional Kendall test revealed a statistically significant increase in the number of thunderstorm days north of 60°N in Interior Alaska, northwestern Canada, much of Siberia and European Russia. A decrease in thunderstorm frequency over a larger area was detected only on the shores of the southern Norwegian Sea, and seasonally in spring in the northern Urals. The observed trends were strongest in the Central Siberia and Interior Alaska regions, where the increase in the number of thunderstorm days exceeded 5 per decade. For the entire high‐latitude area, the change in the number of days with thunderstorms was statistically insignificant, but for stations located 250–1,000 km from the coastline, the averaged increase amounted 1 day per decade. Day-to-day (DTD) temperature variability is an important characteristic of air temperature and is closely related to the economy, ecology, and human health. According to the Sixth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the air temperature has increased particularly during the most recent decades. However, the temporal and spatial variations of DTD temperature variability have not been fully addressed. In this study, the DTD temperature variability is calculated using observed air temperature from meteorological stations in China. The regional and seasonal performances are evaluated among different climate regions and half-year periods. In addition, the relationship between DTD temperature variability and the Arctic Oscillation (AO) is evaluated. The national mean DTD temperature variability in 1961--2020 during the warming (cooling) half-year was 1.8°C (1.5°C), with minimum (maximum) values occurring in the southwestern (northeastern) regions of mainland China. Negative correlation was found between DTD temperature variability and the AO, particularly during the warming half-year in the northern region. The national mean trends of DTD temperature variability were -0.003°C and -0.007°C per decade during warming and cooling half-years, respectively, indicating that the inter-day variation is decreasing under the background of global warming, which may be ecologically beneficial. The surface air temperature seasonal cycle in China has clearly changed in response to global warming, but its future projection has yet to be studied. Here, we investigate the performance and projection of the temperature seasonal cycle in China in 32 global climate models participating in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project 6 (CMIP6). The characteristics of the temperature seasonal cycle, as represented by the amplitude and phase, are measured by the Fourier transform. The results show that the CMIP6 models can reasonably capture the observed typical temperature seasonal cycle feature with clear north–south gradients both for amplitude and phase in China. In the twenty‐first century, the models robustly project a delay in the phase across the whole country and a reduction in the amplitude in most of China relative to the reference period. Those changes are similar in the two shared socioeconomic pathway (SSP) scenarios, with overall larger magnitudes in the SSP5‐8.5 scenario than in the SSP2‐4.5 scenario. Projected amplitude changes are mainly linked to surface energy flux changes, especially latent heat flux changes. In response to future global warming, larger increases in the latent heat flux and thus stronger surface evaporative cooling lead to weaker surface warming in summer than in winter, contributing to a decrease in the amplitude of the temperature seasonal cycle in most regions of China. Tropical convection is expected to decrease with warming, in a variety of ways. Specific incarnations of this idea include the "stability‐iris" hypothesis of decreasing anvil cloud coverage, as well as the decrease of both tropospheric and cloud‐base mass fluxes with warming. This paper seeks to encapsulate these phenomena into three "rules," and to explore their interrelationships and robustness, using both analytical reasoning as well as cloud‐resolving and global climate simulations. We find that each of these rules can be derived analytically from the usual expression for clear‐sky subsidence, so they all embody the same essential physics. But, these rules do not all provide the same degree of constraint: the stability‐iris effect is not entirely robust due to unconstrained microphysical degrees of freedom, and the decrease in cloud‐base mass flux is not entirely robust due to unconstrained effects of entrainment and detrainment. Tropospheric mass fluxes on the other hand are shown to be well‐constrained theoretically, and when evaluated in temperature coordinates they exhibit a monotonic decrease with warming at all vertical levels and across a hierarchy of models. Mercury (Hg) is a neurotoxic pollutant that can be transported globally by atmospheric circulation and poses risks to wildlife and humans. Strong atmospheric Hg seasonality has been observed in the temperate Northern Hemisphere and explained by several hypothetical mechanisms. Here, we found that meteorological conditions were important drivers of the seasonality across diverse temperate regions particularly Asia through various indirect effects. Meteorological conditions can explain approximately 47%, 43%, and 67% of the seasonal amplitudes at the North American (NA) remote sites, European remote sites, and Asian monsoon sites, respectively. Surface air temperature, solar radiation, and surface wind collectively contributed significantly to the seasonality at the NA and European sites through vegetation resistance and oceanic evasion, while monsoon wind and precipitation promoted the summertime removal of Hg at the Asian sites through atmospheric transport and wet deposition, respectively. The findings predicted further changes in atmospheric Hg seasonality under future global warming. Defined as the difference between the daily maximum (Tmax) and minimum surface air temperature (Tmin), the diurnal temperature range (DTR) is critical to local climate, ecosystem, and socio‐economic functioning. This study investigates how DTR responds to the future global warming, using a novel, fine‐resolution convection‐permitting regional climate model. Results demonstrate the asymmetrical impact of global warming, that is, the more substantial warming in Tmin, and the lower in Tmax. This asymmetry results in the DTR reduction of 0.5°K in the mid‐latitude and 0.25°K in the low‐altitude area (under 2°K warming scenario). The increase in daytime cloudiness under warmer climates is likely responsible for the reduction of incoming short‐wave radiation reduction, consequently causing Tmax "underwarming." Study results also suggest that atmospheric instability could play a vital role in the difference in DTR response between the tropical and mid‐latitude areas. Plain Language Summary: Diurnal temperature range, which is defined as the difference between the daily maximum (Tmax) and daily minimum air temperature (Tmin), is a critical factor that modulates local climate, ecosystem, and socio‐economic functioning. This study investigates how global warming impacts diurnal temperature range (DTR) using a high resolution numerical model. Results demonstrate the asymmetrical response to global warming, that is, the more substantial warming is confirmed in Tmin, and the lower in Tmax. This asymmetry results in the DTR reduction of approximately 0.5°K in the mid‐latitude and 0.25°K in the low‐altitude area. A cause of the DTR reduction is the daytime‐cloudiness increase under warmer climates, which reduces short‐wave solar radiation reaching the surface, consequently causing the Tmax "underwarming." Also, the difference in atmospheric instability in the mid‐ and low‐latitude areas explains the difference in the DTR response, that is, more moderate DTR reduction is confirmed in low latitude areas. This study investigates some of the uncertainties sources associated with the pseudo global warming (PGW) approach which was employed to project future patterns of tropical cyclones (TCs) over the Arabian Sea (AS). First, the climate variables controlling the patterns of tropical cyclones were extracted from reanalysis datasets of ERA5, ERAI, CFSR, and NCEP/NCAR. Then, each dataset was evaluated against long‐term measurements to identify the best‐performing reanalysis dataset. ERA5 showed the best performance for most of the variables. Outputs of 20 CMIP5 global climate models (GCMs) were then evaluated against the ERA5 data resulting in an ensemble of the best performing GCMs. A PGW framework was then used to project the changes in patterns of three significant historical cyclones: Gonu, Phet, and Ashobaa. In doing so, the signals of future climate variables were extracted from the GCMs ensemble to modify the initial and boundary conditions of the WRF model which was previously tuned for reproducing the historical TCs. Different tests were conducted to address the sources of uncertainty in the PGW approach, including the selection of the climate variables contributing to the computation of the signals, the selection of GCMs, and the spatial variation of signals. A considerable sensitivity of the projected track and intensity of TCs to the choice of GCMs was observed, acknowledging the importance of GCMs evaluation before calculating the signals. Moreover, it was found that among all variables, signals of sea surface temperature and air temperature have major effects on the cyclone's track and intensity. Apart from that, when the signals were applied to the domain of the WRF model uniformly, compared to applying spatially varying signals, different tracks and intensities for future TCs were also observed.
