Permo–Triassic (P–T) successions in Iran are known as one of the most extensive carbonate–evaporite sequences in the world, holding prolific hydrocarbon accumulations, such as the gas fields in the Zagros Basin. This study addresses the impact of paleoenvironmental changes across the P–T extinction boundary, variations in eustatic level and diagenesis on the carbonate reservoir quality of the Permo–Triassic Upper Dalan and Kangan formations in the Lavan Gas Field (offshore Zagros). A total of eight lithofacies have been defined and interpreted, representing the shallower parts (inner ramp to shoal) of a carbonate homoclinal ramp. The diagenetic features show the mixing influence of marine, meteoric and burial processes, with prevalence of multistage dolomitization and late meteoric‐related imprints. The main dolomitization processes are interpreted to be penecontemporaneous and associated with continuous seawater reflux and high evaporation within the intertidal environment. Combined analysis of facies and petrophysical properties has been utilized to define six rock types, including RT4 (grainstones from oolitic shoals) as the best reservoir, whereas RT1 (supratidal anhydrite) is acting as the main cap rock within the studied carbonate–evaporite sequence. Multiscale characterization of lithological and petrophysical properties suggest that the Upper Dalan Formation has a single reservoir unit (D1), whereas the Kangan Formation may be divided into two reservoir units (K1 and K2). The best reservoir quality is promoted by dissolution and dolomitization associated with late Transgressive Sequence Tracts (TST) to early Highstand Sequence Tracts (HST) sequences, while low reservoir quality corresponds to late HST sequences accompanied by pore‐occluded cements. Petrophysical analysis suggest better porosity‐permability for the Upper Dalan than for the Kangan Formation. This observation is closely associated with the different nature of lithofacies, where the Kangan Formation contains more fine‐grained carbonate rocks, and the higher intensity of porosity‐grain dolomitization in the Upper Dalan Formation. This study provides a better understanding on reservoir quality prediction across the P–T boundary and the effect of eustatic fluctuations and diagenesis in controlling porosity‐permeability evolution with similar settings elsewhere. During the Early Carboniferous, the northeastern Qaidam Basin probably formed in an active continental margin setting. Due to marine regression after the late Early Carboniferous, the marginal shelf began to receive more terrestrial clastic sediments, and alternating occurrence of carbonates and siliciclastics characterized this region. Consequently, shales or mudstones with considerable thickness were deposited in the Upper Carboniferous, especially in the Keluke Formation. In order to illuminate a more accurate sedimentary environment of shales and further evaluate the shale gas potential, multidisciplinary traditional methods were conducted including rock core examinations and laboratory analysis. Results reveal that the sedimentary microfacies of shales in the Keluke Formation can be divided into the upper shoreface, the lower shoreface, and the upper to transition offshore. These microfacies developed on a homoclinal carbonate ramp with a gentle slope. The thickest succession of mudstone develops in the lower shoreface, which is a counterpart with the lagoonal setting of a stationary hydraulic system. The quartz content of shale samples ranges from 30% to 66% and clay minerals from 24% to 43% by bulk compositional analysis, which indicates the content of brittle minerals and shales fissility to some extent. The total organic carbon content ranges from 0.5% to 7.6% by weight, with an average value of 2.69% in ZK1‐1 and 1.11% in ZK3‐2, indicating abundant organic matter richness. The kerogen is mainly of type II, which indicates that source for the organic matter is a mixture of higher terrestrial plants and acquatic organisms. The vitrinite reflectance ranges from 1.22% to 1.55%, indicating a moderate to high thermal maturity. Three types of pores are recognized in the shales, including organic pores, intrapartical pores, and interparticle pores. The significance of this work emphasizes two aspects. First, it gives a more detailed classification of sedimentary environment of the mudstone succession; second, it acquires the preliminary subsurface data regarding to the shale gas potential evaluation. Abstract: Floodplains, paleosols, and antecedent landforms near the apex of the Brahmaputra fan delta in north‐central Bangladesh preserve cycles of fluvial sediment deposition, erosion and weathering. Together these landforms and their associated deposits comprise morphostratigraphic units that define the river's history and have influenced its channel position and avulsion behaviour through the Late Quaternary. Previously, temporal differentiation within these units has not been sufficient to decipher their sequence of deposition, an important step in understanding the spatial pattern of migration of the Brahmaputra River. Holocene units in this region are fairly well established by radiocarbon dating of in situ organic material, but pre‐Holocene units are considered Pleistocene‐aged if organic material is dated >48 000 year BP (the limit of radiocarbon dating) or the sediments are positioned beneath a prominent paleosol, interpreted as a buried soil horizon that developed during a previous sea level lowstand. In such cases, these morphostratigraphic units have been broadly interpreted as Pleistocene without knowing their absolute depositional ages or relative evolutionary chronology. Here we use detailed sediment analysis to better differentiate morphostratigraphic units at the Brahmaputra's avulsion node, establishing the sequence of deposition and subsequent weathering of these bodies. We then test this relative chronology by luminescence dating of the sands beneath these landform surfaces. This work provides the first absolute depositional age constraints of terrace sediments for the Middle to Late Pleistocene Brahmaputra River and upper Bengal basin. The luminescence ages are complemented by detailed compositional trends in the terrace deposits, including clay mineralogy and the degree of weathering. Together, these newly dated and carefully described morphostratigraphic units reflect eustasy‐driven cycles of terrace development by way of highstand floodplain deposition and subsequent lowstand exposure and weathering, along with active tectonic deformation. Defining this Late Quaternary history of terrace development and position of the Brahmaputra River is a first step toward an integrated understanding of basin and delta evolution over multiple glacioeustatic cycles and tectonically relevant timescales. With the recent discovery of new oil fields around the Dongying Depression, Bohai Bay Basin, a better understanding of the origin of its high-quality lacustrine carbonate reservoirs has become important. The lacustrine carbonates of the upper fourth member of the Eocene Shahejie Formation (ES4s) have been examined using a variety of methods, including core and thin section observations, XRD, SEM, CL and fluid inclusion and isotope testing. The δ13C and δ18O values of the Dongying carbonates differ significantly from Eocene marine values, and the 87Sr/86Sr ratios of carbonate minerals are higher than Eocene marine water and the same as the surrounding Palaeozoic carbonate bedrock. Additionally, the distribution of the carbonates is controlled by the surrounding Palaeozoic carbonate bedrock, all of which indicate their lacustrine origin. Six major carbonate lithofacies are distinguished in the southern gentle slope zone. Bioclastic, oolitic and intraclastic grainstones dominate the littoral to sublittoral zones, while mudstones are mainly distributed in the profundal zone. The ES4s interval is composed of a third-order depositional sequence that contains several small-scale, higher frequency depositional cycles. Overall, stacking patterns of high-frequency depositional cycles are consistent with the general facies variation from basin to shore. Shallow-water grainstones contain both primary intergranular and secondary dissolution pores, whereas the dolomitized mudstones in the profundal zone contain intercrystalline pores and fractures. Diagenetic processes that improve reservoir quality include dissolution and dolomitization. Reservoir quality was diminished by burial calcite cementation and compaction. High-quality reservoirs are mostly distributed in dolomitized grainstones and wackestones, which are deposited in the shoal facies of shallow lakes. Variations in reservoir quality in the Dongying Depression are due to a combination of lithofacies type, dissolution intensity, early dolomitization and tectonic-related deformation. Due to the influx of meteoric waters and shallow burial depth, the grainstones in the littoral zone have the best reservoir quality. The late Ediacaran Billy Springs Formation is a little-studied, mudstone-dominated unit deposited in the Adelaide Rift Complex of South Australia. Sediments are exposed in an approximately 11 km × 15 km synclinal structure interpreted as a salt-withdrawal minibasin. The stratigraphic succession is characterized by convolute-laminated slump deposits, rhythmically laminated silty mudstones, rare diamictites and fining-upward turbidite lithofacies. Lithofacies are the product of deposition in a deepwater slope or shelf setting, representing one of the few such examples preserved within the larger basin. Although exact correlations with other formations are unclear, the Billy Springs Formation probably represents the distal portion of a highstand systems tract, and is overlain by coarser sediments of the upper Pound Subgroup. Diamictite intervals are interpreted to be the product of mass flow processes originating from nearby emergent diapirs, in contrast to previous studies that suggest a glacial origin for extrabasinal clasts. Within the spectrum of outcropping minibasins around the world, the sediments described here are unique in their dominantly fine-grained nature and overall lithological homogeneity. Exposures such as these provide an opportunity to better understand the sedimentological processes that operate in these environments, and provide an analogue for similar settings in the subsurface that act as hydrocarbon reservoir-trap systems. The Upper Jurassic Emuerhe Formation was developed with abundant sedimentary facies types in the western section of the Mohe Basin. Based on the systematic sampling and detailed observation on the Emuerhe Formation of this section, the research on the sandstone grain size characteristics of the Emuerhe Formation was carried out with the grain size parameters features (Mz, SK1, KG and σ1), the sensitive components parameters features (SCPGS, SCGSR and SCPV) and the grain size analytical graphs features (grain size frequency curves, grain size cumulative curves, probability cumulative curves and C-M plots). The comprehensive analytical results illustrate that the hydrodynamic energy of the Emuerhe Formation (three times fan delta facies, two times sandy shallow lake microfacies and five times turbidite deposit) in the western section gradually reduced from bottom to top. In addition, the hydrodynamic energy of each fan delta facies gradually enhanced from bottom to top. Based on the analysis of the hydrodynamic conditions of the Emuerhe Formation in the western section, the hydrodynamic conditions evolution history of this section can be divided into five sedimentary phases, namely respectively for the fan delta sedimentary phase, the first-time sandy shallow lake microfacies sedimentary phase, the short-term deep lake subfacies sedimentary phase, the second-time sandy shallow lake microfacies sedimentary phase and the relatively stable deep lake subfacies sedimentary phase from bottom to top. The article discusses a study concerning the hydrocarbon generation and expulsion characteristics of Permian Lucaogou Formation source rocks in Jimusar Sag, Junggar Basin in China. Topics include the exploration practice in the basin, the organic matter abundance of the formation, and the maturity and characteristics of hydrocarbon generation and expulsion. Methods used in the study include well logging, core logging, and rock-evaluation.

Laser ablation-multi collector-inductively coupled mass spectrometry U- Pb geochronology, detailed field mapping and stratigraphic data offer improved insights into the timing and style of Laramide deformation and basin development in the Little Hatchet Mountains, southwestern New Mexico, USA, a key locality in the 'southern Laramide province.' The Laramide synorogenic section in the northern Little Hatchet Mountains comprises upper Campanian to Maastrichtian strata consisting of the Ringbone and Skunk Ranch formations, with a preserved maximum thickness of >2400 m, and the correlative Hidalgo Formation with a total thickness >1700 m. The Ringbone Formation and superjacent Skunk Ranch Formation are each generally composed of (1) a basal conglomerate member; (2) a middle member consisting of lacustrine shale, limestone, sandstone, and interbedded ash-fall tuffs; and (3) an upper sandstone and conglomerate member. Basaltic andesite flows are intercalated with the upper member of the Ringbone Formation and the middle member of the Skunk Ranch Formation. The Hidalgo Formation, which crops out in the northern part of the range, is dominantly composed of basaltic andesite breccias and flows equivalent to those of the Ringbone and Skunk Ranch formations. The Laramide section was deposited in an intermontane basin partitioned across intrabasinal thrust structures, which controlled growth-stratal development. U- Pb zircon ages from five tuffs indicate that the age range of the Laramide sedimentary succession is ca. 75-70 Ma. U- Pb detrital-zircon age data ( n = 356 analyses) from the Ringbone Formation and a Lower Cretaceous unit indicate sediment contribution from uplifted Lower and Upper Cretaceous rocks adjacent to the basin and the contemporary Tarahumara magmatic arc in nearby northern Sonora, Mexico. The new ages, combined with published data, indicate that uplift, basin development, and magmatism in the region proceeded diachronously northeastwards as the subducting Farallon slab flattened under northern Mexico and southern New Mexico from Campanian to Palaeogene time. Understanding the relationship between sedimentation and tectonics is critical to the analysis of stratigraphic evolution in foreland basins. Previous models of foreland basins have explained stratal development, but were done generally under the assumption that steady allogenic forcing produces a steady stratigraphic response. They did not consider autogenic shoreline behaviour during the development of the subsidence pattern characteristic of foreland basins. We present a mathematical model and flume experiments that explore how subsidence and sediment-supply rates control the shoreline trajectory and the stratal patterns that fill foreland basins. Through these models, we found differing autogenic responses in the rate and direction of shoreline migration, and these generated three distinct styles of stratal architecture, despite the constant external forcing (i.e. constant sediment discharge and basin substrate tilting). The first response was 'autoretreat', where shoreline migration switched from initial progradation to retrogradation. The second response was progradation followed by constant aggradation of the shoreline. The third response was maintained progradation with a markedly accelerating rate. We termed this latter newly observed autogenic behaviour 'shoreline autoacceleration'. These three modes of shoreline behaviour and their accompanying stratal architecture provide a basic framework for the relationship between sedimentation and tectonic activity in foreland basins under the simplified conditions presented here. Funiusaurus luanchuanensis gen. et sp. nov. was described on the basis of an incomplete skull from the Upper Cretaceous Qiupa Formation of the Tantou Basin in Luanchuan County, Henan Province. It is the second representative of lizards known from Luanchuan and adds a new member to the Luanchuan Fauna. F. luanchuanensis is a small-sized lizard and systematically assigned to the Polyglyphanodontidae of the Teiioidea because of the presence of a caniniform tooth and an elongate posterior process of the postorbital. It is distinctive in that the heterodont dentition bears 19 teeth in both the upper and lower jaws, the 3rd maxillary tooth is large and caniniform, the post-caniniform teeth in maxilla and those posterior to the 3rd dentary tooth are chisel-like in lateral view, the prefrontal possesses a fossa on its lateral surface, the postorbital with an extremely elongate posterior process and the well-developed retroarticular process has a deep fossa on its dorsal surface. In phylogeny, our analysis suggests a close relationship of Funiusaurus to the large-sized Tianyusaurus from the same basin within the Tuberocephalosaurinae. The discovery of Funiusaurus is significant in confirming the status of the Tuberocephalosaurinae, which includes a group of the Asian members of the Polyglyphanodontidae only. Quantitative studies on the extension and subsidence of the Wanan Basin were carried out based on available seismic and borehole data together with regional geological data. Using balanced cross-section and backstripping techniques, we reconstructed the stratigraphic deposition and tectonic evolution histories of the basin. The basin formed from the Eocene and was generally in an extensional/transtensional state except for the Late Miocene local compressoin. The major basin extension ocurred in the Oligocene and Early Miocene (before ∼16.3 Ma) and thereafter uniform stretch in a smaller rate. The northern and middle basin extended intensely earlier during 38.6-23.3 Ma, while the southern basin was mainly stretched during 23.3-16.3 Ma. The basin formation and development are related to alternating sinistral to dextral strike-slip motions along the Wanan Fault Zone. The dominant dynamics may be caused by the seafloor spreading of the South China Sea and the its peripheral plate interaction. Marine carbonate reservoirs, as a focus of petroleum exploration and development in China, are involved with high exploration risk and prediction difficulty owing to high heterogeneity and diversity of reservoir beds. In the Tarim Basin, NW China, carbonate reservoirs host about 38% of the whole basin's hydrocarbon resources in a large prospecting area mainly distributed in the Cambrian and Ordovician rocks in central (Tazhong) and northern (Tabei) Tarim. Recently, a better understanding has been made of the karsted weathering crust at the top of the Lower Ordovician Yingshan Formation in the northern slope area of the Tazhong Low Rise, Central Uplift, Tarim Basin. As a new frontier of exploration, oil/gas distribution and controlling factors of carbonate reservoirs in the Yingshan Formation are not clearly understood. In this work, we investigated the reservoir beds and oil/gas properties in 13 wells in Well block ZG-43 on the No. 10 structural belt in the Tazhong Low Rise, and studied hydrocarbon accumulation characteristics with seismic and geochemical data. The Yingshan Formation in Well block ZG-43 is mainly composed of calcarenite, dolomitic limestone, dolomite, cryptite, as low porosity and low permeability reservoir beds, with fracture-void porosity constituting the main reservoir pore space. Oil/gas is quasi-layer distributed beneath the unconformity between the Yingshan and Lianglitag formations to a depth of 140 m. The oil in Well block ZG-43 is condensate with low density, low viscosity, low sulphur, low resin, low asphaltene, and high wax. The gas is 87.3% methane, generally containing H2S. The oil/gas distribution pattern is oil in the east and gas in the west, and H2S content in the west is lower than that in the east. The controlling factors for hydrocarbon are multi-source supply and multi-phase charging, interstratal karstification, hydrothermal activity, structural location and sealing condition. A structural-lithological trap is the main type of oil/gas accumulation. Oil/gas distribution was clearly affected by strike-slip faults. Oil/gas with multi-source supply and multi-phase charging was controlled by favourable local palaeo-highs, and affected by later karsting and hydrothermal activity, as well as gas invasion in the Himalayan (Cenozoic) period. Under the caprock of compact limestone in the third to fifth members of the Lianglitag Formation, oil/gas migrated up along the strike-slip fault planes, and moved laterally to both sides in a 'T' shape, and formed large-scale quasi-layer condensate gas reservoirs controlled by reservoir bed quality. The Middle Jurassic Khatatba Formation acts as a hydrocarbon reservoir in the subsurface in the Western Desert, Egypt. This study, which is based on core samples from two exploration boreholes, describes the lithological and diagenetic characteristics of the Khatatba Formation sandstones. The sandstones are fine- to coarse-grained, moderately to well-sorted quartz arenites, deposited in fluvial channels and in a shallow-marine setting. Diagenetic components include mechanical and chemical compaction, cementation (calcite, clay minerals, quartz overgrowths, and a minor amount of pyrite), and dissolution of calcite cements and feldspar grains. The widespread occurrence of an early calcite cement suggests that the Khatatba sandstones lost a significant amount of primary porosity at an early stage of its diagenetic history. In addition to calcite, several different cements including kaolinite and syntaxial quartz overgrowth occur as pore-filling and pore-lining cements. Kaolinite (largely vermicular) fills pore spaces and causes reduction in the permeability of the reservoir. Based on framework grain-cement relationships, precipitation of the early calcite cement was either accompanied by or followed the development of part of the pore-lining and pore-filling cements. Secondary porosity development occurred due to partial to complete dissolution of early calcite cements and feldspar. Late kaolinite clay cement occurs due to dissolved feldspar and has an impact on the reservoir quality of the Khatatba sandstones. Open hydraulic fractures also generated significant secondary porosity in sandstone reservoirs, where both fractures and dissolution took place in multiple phases during late diagenetic stages. The diagenesis and sedimentary facies help control the reservoir quality of the Khatatba sandstones. Fluvial channel sandstones have the highest porosities and permeabilities, in part because of calcite cementation, which inhibited authigenic clays or was later dissolved, creating intergranular secondary porosity. Fluvial crevasse-splay and marine sandstones have the lowest reservoir quality because of an abundance of depositional kaolinite matrix and pervasive, shallow-burial calcite and quartz overgrowth cements, respectively. The Aínsa Basin of northern Spain contains a deep-marine succession comprising up to 24 sandstone bodies separated by thick marl-rich units. A detailed analysis of nine outcrops (>900 m of sediment profiles) from the Morillo Formation of the San Vicente Group, from the upper part of the basin succession, has enabled a reappraisal of the unit. Within the Morillo Formation, sediment transport was to the NW, and a range of environments are recognized including channels, lobes and pelagic deposits. The overlying Coscojuela Formation, which partly cuts into the Morillo Formation, shows W-directed palaeocurrents in its proximal reaches, with flows being deflected to the N along an adjacent slope. Destabilization of the adjacent carbonate platform resulted in a significant input of carbonate material into the flow. The final phases of sedimentation within the Aínsa Basin were more complex than previously suspected, probably as a result of a combination of factors, including tectonic activity, resulting in basin narrowing due to anticlinal growth, as well as encroachment and/or destabilization of the adjacent regional carbonate platforms. The tectonics of the Virgin Islands Basin are controlled by the plate boundary between the Puerto Rico-Virgin Islands Microplate and the stable part of the Caribbean Plate. Several contradicting theories about the formation and development of this basin have previously been proposed. As part of the Danish Galathea 3 expedition, extensive marine geological investigations of the basin were carried out in March 2007 including sediment coring and acquisition of multi-beam and two-dimensional seismic data. This paper represents a summary of the key observations from the multi-beam and the seismic data set. The interpretation of these observations leads to the proposition of a tectonic model for the Virgin Islands Basin. The model consists of N-S to NW- SE directed extension combined with E-W trending sinistral strike-slip and the new structural evidence from the Virgin Islands Basin is entirely consistent with the most recently published GPS data. The Liangshan and Qixia formations in the Sichuan Basin of central China were formed in the earlier middle Permian. Based on outcrop observation of the Changjianggou section at Shangsi, Guangyuan region and 3rd-order sequence division in typical drillings, one-dimensional spectrum analysis has been used to choose the better curve between the natural gamma ray spectrometry log(ln (Th/K)) in Well-Long17 and the gamma ray log(GR) in Well-Wujia1, respectively, for identifying Milankovitch cycles in Sequence PSQ1 which comprises the Liangshan and Qixia formations, and then to identify the variation in the Milankovitch cycle sequences. On this basis, the system tract and 4th-order sequence interfaces in Sequence PSQ1 were found via two-dimensional spectral analysis and digital filtering. Finally, a high-frequency sequence division program was established. Among these cycles, long eccentricity (413.0 ka) and short eccentricity (123.0 ka) are the most unambiguous, and they are separately the major control factors in forming 4th-order (parasequence sets) and 5th-order (parasequences) sequences, with the average thicknesses corresponding to the main cycles being 11.47 m and 3.32 m in Well-Long17, and 14.21 m and 3.79 m in Well-Wujia1, respectively. In other words, the deposition rate in the beach subfacies is faster than that of the inner ramp facies. The ln(Th/K) curve is more sensitive than the GR as the index of relatively ancient water depth in carbonate deposition. One-dimensional spectrum analysis of ln(Th/K) curve could distinguish the Milankovitch cycle sequences that arose from the Precession cycle (20.90 ka), with a much higher credibility. Sequence PSQ1 in Well-Long17 contains 10 4th-order sequences, and the growth span of Sequence PSQ1 consisting of the Liangshan and Qixia formations is about 4.13 Ma. The single deposition thickness of the long eccentricity cycle sequence has the characteristics of thinning and then thickening in the two-dimensional spectrum, which could be used to identify the system tract interface of the 3rd-order sequence. The precession sequence thickness remains stationary. As a result, the early deposition rate in the mid-Permian of the Sichuan basin was very slow, remaining nearly stationary, and this reflects a sustained depositional environment. Whole-rock carbon and oxygen isotope curves could also prove this point Milankovitch cycle sequence studies provide a basis for paleoenvironmental analysis and, as such, can be used to analyze ancient climate change, calculate deposition rate and deposition time, and carry out fine isochronous stratigraphic correlation. Huhehu Sag is a new battlefield for the future oil and gas exploration in the Hailar Basin. At present, exploration of this area stays at a low level and the understanding of the provenance system of the Nantun Formation is comparatively weak. So, to carry out the detailed depiction of the provenance system in the study area is significant for the sedimentary system reconstruction, for the prediction of reservoir distribution and favorable areas. Based on comprehensive analysis of paleogeomorphy, light-heavy mineral and seismic reflection features, sandstone thickness and sandstone percentage, this paper analyzes in detail the provenance system of the Nantun Formation in Huhehu Sag from various angles and levels. It shows that provenances of the Huhehu Sag mainly originated from the eastern Xilinbeier Salient and western Bayan Mountain Uplift. The provenances surrounding the lake basin converged to the center of the basin, among which, the steep slope belt and the gentle slope belt are the main provenances, and the southern uplift is a secondary one. The beach-bar reservoir play has become an important exploration target within the Bohai Bay Basin, especially in the Boxing Sag within the Dongying Depression, where a large-scale lacustrine beach-bar oil pool has been discovered recently. The sedimentary characteristics, distribution patterns and formation mechanisms of beach-bar sand bodies in the upper fourth member of the Eocene Shahejie Formation ( Es4s) in the Boxing Sag were studied in detail based on seismic, well log data and core data. The Es4s in the Boxing Sag is composed of a third-order sequence consisting of three systems tracts, i.e. a lowstand systems tract, a transgressive systems tract and a highstand systems tract. Beach-bar sand bodies were deposited widely in the basin during the lowstand systems tract period. The sandy beach-bars are characterized by siltstones, fine-grained silty sandstones interbedded with thin mudstone units. The presence of well-developed sedimentary structures, such as swash bedding, parting lineation, parallel bedding, ellipsoidal mud clasts, ripples, terrestrial plant debris and vertical burrows, suggests that beach-bars were deposited in a relatively shallow water environment under the influence of strong hydrodynamics. Laterally, the sandy beach facies occurred as a more continuous sheet-like body around the sandy bar in most parts of the sag. Stratigraphically, beach-bars were distributed mainly in the lowstand systems tract and they were less well-developed in the transgressive systems tract and highstand systems tract. Several factors were probably responsible for the occurrence of the large-scale beach-bars during the lowstand systems tract period, including: (i) a gentle palaeoslope and relatively weak structural activities; (ii) a shallow-water condition with a strong hydrodynamic environment; (iii) high-frequency oscillations of the lake level; and (iv) an abundant terrigenous clastic feeding system with multiple-point and linear sediment sources. The Lower Pliocene of the Linxia Basin in Gansu Province is one of only a few representative sections for the Early Pliocene sedimentary records in northern China, and even in East Asia. Recently, abundant mammalian fossils were found from the base of red clays of the Lower Pliocene Hewangjia Formation at Duikang in Guanghe County within this basin. Previously, the Pliocene mammals were sparsely found in China, and most were collected from fluvial and lacustrine deposits in the eastern Loess Plateau. Mammals from the widely distributed Pliocene Hipparion Red Clay are less in number. The known fossils from Duikang include 20 species and belong to the Shilidun Fauna. Their faunal components are similar to the Early Pliocene Gaozhuang Fauna from Yushe, Shanxi. On the other hand, some taxa from Duikang have not been found in the Gaozhuang Fauna, are slightly more primitive in evolutionary level, and appeared mainly in the Late Miocene. As a result, the age of the Duikang fossils may be slightly earlier than that of the Gaozhuang Fauna and closer to the lower boundary of the Pliocene. The Duikang fossiliferous bed is 0.8 m above the top of the Late Miocene Liushu Formation, and the first occurrence of the three-toed horse Hipparion pater can be regarded as a biostratigraphical marker of the Miocene/Pliocene boundary. In conclusion, Duikang is an ideal candidate locality to establish as the stratotype of the lower boundary of the Chinese terrestrial Pliocene. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work presents the stratigraphy and facies analysis of an interval of about 2500 m in the Langhian and Serravallian stratigraphic succession of the foredeep turbidites of the Marnoso-arenacea Formation. A high-resolution stratigraphic analysis was performed by measuring seven stratigraphic logs between the Sillaro and Marecchia lines (60 km apart) for a total thickness of about 6700 m. The data suggest that the stratigraphy and depositional setting of the studied interval was influenced by syndepositional structural deformations. The studied stratigraphic succession has been subdivided into five informal stratigraphic units on the basis of how structurally controlled topographic highs and depocentres, a consequence of thrust propagation, change over time. These physiographic changes of the foredeep basin have also been reconstructed through the progressive appearance and disappearance of thrust-related mass-transport complexes and of five bed types interpreted as being related to structurally controlled basin morphology. Apart from Bouma-like Type-4 beds, Type-1 tripartite beds, characterized by an internal slurry unit, tend to increase especially in structurally controlled stratigraphic units where intrabasinal topographic highs and depocentres with slope changes favour both mud erosion and decelerations. Type-2 beds, with an internal slump-type chaotic unit, characterize the basal boundary of structurally controlled stratigraphic units and are interpreted as indicating tectonic uplift. Type-3 beds are contained-reflected beds that indicate different degrees of basin confinement, while Type-5 are thin and fine-grained beds deposited by dilute reflected turbulent flows able to rise up the topographic highs. The vertical and lateral distribution of these beds has been used to understand the synsedimentary structural control of the studied stratigraphic succession, represented in the Marnoso-arenacea Formation by subtle topographic highs and depocentres created by thrust-propagation folds and emplacements of large mass-transport complexes. - The 1.4-1.6 km thick Onaping Formation consists of a complex series of breccias and 'melt bodies' lying above the Sudbury Igneous Complex (SIC) at the Sudbury impact structure. Based on the presence of shocked lithic clasts and various 'glassy' phases, the Onaping has been described as a 'suevitic' breccia, with an origin, at least in part, as fallback material. Recent mapping and a redefined stratigraphy have emphasized similarities and differences in its various vitric phases, both as clast types and discrete intrusive bodies. The nature of the Onaping and that of other 'suevitic' breccias overlying impact melt sheets is reviewed. The relative thickness, internal stratigraphic and lithological character, and the relative chronology of depositional units indicate multiple processes were involved over some time in the formation of the Onaping. The Sudbury structure formed in a foreland basin and water played an essential role in the evolution of the Onaping, as indicated by a major hydrothermal system generated during its formation. Taken together, observations and interpretations of the Onaping suggest a working hypothesis for the origin of the Onaping that includes not only impact but also the interaction of sea water with the impact melt, resulting in repeated explosive interactions involving proto-SIC materials and mixing with pre-existing lithologies. This is complicated by additional brecciation events due to the intrusion of proto-SIC materials into the evolving and thickening Onaping. Organic geochemical studies of Cretaceous formations in the Gongola Basin, northern Nigeria, show TOC values that are generally higher than the minimum (0.5 wt %) required for hydrocarbon generation. Data from Rock-Eval pyrolysis and biomarker studies indicate the presence of both terrestrial and marine derived Types II and III organic matter, which is immature in the Gombe Formation and of marginal maturity in the Yolde Formation. Immature Type III to IV OM is present in the Pindiga Formation; and Type III OM, with a maturity that corresponds to the conventional onset (or perhaps peak) of oil generation occurs in the Bima Formation. However, Bima Formation samples from the 4710 – 4770 ft (1435.6 – 1453.9 m) depth interval within well Nasara-1 indicate Type I OM of perhaps lacustrine origin (H31R/H30 ratio generally ≤0.25). Although the Nasara-1 well was reported to be dry, geochemical parameters (high TOCs, S1, S2 and Hls, low Tmax compared to adjacent samples, a bimodal S2 peak on the Rock-Eval pyrogram, a dominance of fluorinite macerals), together with generally low H3IR/H30 biomarker ratios within the 4710–4770 ft (1435.6–1453.9 m) interval, suggest the presence of migrated oil, perhaps sourced by lacustrine shales in the Albian Bima Formation located at as-yet unpenetrated depths. The presence of the migrated oil in the Bima Formation and its possible lacustrine origin suggest that the petroleum system in the Gongola Basin is similar to that of the Termit, Doba and Doseo Basins of the Chad Republic, where economic oil reserves have been encountered. Geodynamic modelling indicates that the emergence of initially submarine convergent orogens above sea level can have a significant influence on their subsequent tectonic development. This is because of two effects. First, surface uplift under submarine conditions, and the resulting decrease in gravitational loads, tends to reactivate deformation in the uplifting part of the submerged orogen. Second, an increase in the rate of erosion associated with the emergence of land can cause increased exhumation rates, reduced thrust-front advance rates, narrowing of the orogen width, and a shift from slow deposition in piggyback basins to rapid deposition in the foredeep. These effects result from the ability of erosion to perturb mass balance at the orogen-scale. Based on these results, I hypothesize that the emergence of initially submerged orogens such as the Alps and Taiwan played a direct role in explaining major changes in orogen dynamics and basin evolution that are known to occur in these examples. During the Late Jurassic, accelerated ocean-floor spreading and associated sea-level rise were responsible for a worldwide transgression, which reached its maximum in the Late Kimmeridgian. In many Western European basins, this major sea-level rise led to the formation of marly and condensed sections. In the Swiss Jura, however, a shallow carbonate platform kept growing and only subtle changes in the stratigraphic record suggest an increasingly open-marine influence. Field observations and thin-section analyses reveal that the central Swiss Jura was at that time occupied by tidal flats and by more or less open marine lagoons where shoals and bioherms developed. The evolution through time of sedimentary facies and bed thicknesses permits the definition of small-, medium-, and large-scale depositional sequences. The diagnostic features of these sequences are independent of scale and seem largely controlled by the Kimmeridgian second-order transgression. A high-resolution sequence-stratigraphic correlation with biostratigraphically well-dated hemipelagic and pelagic sections in the Vocontian Basin in France reveals that: (i) The most important increase in accommodation recorded in the Kimmeridgian of the central Swiss Jura occurs in the Eudoxus ammonite zone (Late Kimmeridgian) and corresponds to the second-order maximum flooding recognized in many sedimentary basins. (ii) The small- and medium-scale sequences have time durations corresponding to the first and second orbital eccentricity cycle (i.e. 100 and 400 ka, respectively), suggesting that sedimentation on the platform and in the basin was at least partly controlled by cyclic environmental changes induced by insolation variations in the Milankovitch frequency band. The comparison of the high-resolution temporal framework defined in the Swiss Jura and Vocontian Basin with the sequence-stratigraphic interpretation realized in other Western European basins shows that the large-scale sequence boundaries defined in the Kimmeridgian of the Swiss Jura appear in comparable biostratigraphic positions in most Western European basins. ABSTRACT The formation of the North Croatian Basin, which represents the south-western marginal part of the Pannonian Basin System and the Central Paratethys Bioprovince, began during Ottnangian time (early Miocene) by continental rifting. The syn-rift phase lasted until the middle Badenian (middle Miocene), and resulted in the formation of elongated half-grabens characterized by large sediment thicknesses strongly influenced by tectonics and gradually increasing volcanism. Towards the end of the syn-rift phase sinistral strike-slip faulting took place, transverse to oblique to the master faults, which disintegrated the longitudinal structures contemporaneously with volcanic activity. The depositional environments gradually changed from alluvial and lacustrine to marine. The syn- to post-rift boundary was characterized by significant erosion of the uplift fault block footwalls. The post-rift phase extended from the middle Badenian to the end of the Pontian (latest Miocene). Tectonic influence drastically decreased, volcanism ceased, and subsidence of the basin was controlled predominantly by cooling of the lithosphere. Marine connections gradually decreased, resulting in a transition from marine to brackish, ‘caspi-brackish’ and finally fluvial-marsh environments. A new rhynchosaur,Hyperodapedon hueneisp. nov., is described from the Upper Triassic Santa Maria Formation of the Paraná Basin, Brazil. The holotype is an almost complete skull and mandible, collected at Inhamandá, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The diagnosis of the genusHyperodapedonHuxley is revised to include not onlyH. huxleyiLydekker andH. gordoniHuxley (as generally accepted), but also the new species described here, various specimens usually assigned to 'Scaphonyx fischeri' Woodward, and 'S'.sanjuanensisSill.H. hueneisp. nov. exhibits a number of plesiomorphic features and appears to be the least derived species ofHyperodapedon, forming a sister taxon to the remaining members of the genus. The Upper Triassic (Carnian?) Molteno Formation in the main Karoo (Gondwana) Basin, South Africa forms a northerly thinning, intracratonic clastic wedge comprising sandstones, shales and coals occurring within thick (up to 140 m) laterally persistent fining-upward sequences. These sequences were deposited by braided streams draining an alluvial plain which may have been built on to the distal slopes, of alluvial fan complexes of glacial outwash type. Geometric relations between sequences indicate three phases, of tectonic activity. The lowermost fining-upward sequence in the south accumulated against a rising mountain front: cessation of movement and an eastward shift in the main locus of tectonism and sedimentation was followed by renewed uplift and basinwide progradation of the second fining-upward sequence adjacent to a fault-block granite terrain located close to the present south-east coastline of South Africa. This is believed to be the granite at the eastern end of the Falkland Island Plateau, an interpretation consistent with its position on most continental reconstructions and the fracture zone marking its northern scarp face. Faulting is attributed to the first phase of extension prior to continental breakup. The sourceward recession and lack of gross fining-upward trends shown by the uppermost fining-upward sequences is accounted for by limited back-faulting of the still active basin margin. Cessation of activity and further basin margin recession occurred with deposition of the overlying floodplain deposits (Elliot Formation) which were distal equivalents of the braided alluvial plain.
