This paper develops multi-dimensional analyses of socio-spatial relations. Building on previous research, we identify some tensions associated with different dimensions of socio-spatiality and introduce the theme of compossible and, more importantly, incompossible socio-spatial configurations. Two short studies are deployed to highlight the socio-spatial implications of the principle that not everything that is possible is compossible. The first shows the power of thinking varieties of capitalism compossibly (via the concept of variegated capitalism) and then examines the successive strategies adopted by the European Communities and European Union to address the significance of changing patterns of variegation for approaches to European integration, spatial strategies, and economic and social policies. The second case discusses some related problems for state spatial projects, starting in the 1980s with spatial planning, promotion of a Europe of the Regions and/or of Europe and the regions, and then turns to examine city-regional development strategies. This special issue is concerned with the development of the Single European Market (SEM) and its likely impact on industrial relations in the member-states of the European Community (EC). The articles that follow present new empirical material, analysis and speculation on the development of industrial relations arrangements at the level of both the EC and the member-states.
The articles fall into three groups. The first provides a general overview of EC developments and the establishment of the Single Market. The second group then focuses on the structure and governance of firms within the EC and on channels of representation of workers' interests at enterprise level. The article provides information on the publication "The European Social Budget," released by the European Commission, which offers data about the Commission's member countries. This publication observes goals of being a source of quantitative information on medium-term trends in expenditure in the various social policy sectors and on the way this expenditure is financed as well as being an aid to decision-making at the national and the European Community level, providing for reciprocal information, polling of experience and the search for common solutions or ways of tackling problems.

Deals with a study which examined the role of public enterprises in the cooperative, mutual and non-profit sector of the European Community's member states in the 1990s. The article examines the German literature to investigate the problems of European integration. The author states that the German study concentrates on the problems which European integration raises only in public and civil law and of economic policy and theory. It was the popular media of communication that articulates attitudes to the political problems of European integration. One literature suggests the need for European union of the basic consensus in favor of integration including the geographical delimitation and institutional form of communities.
