The place of evidence to inform educational effectiveness has received increasing attention internationally in the last two decades. An important contribution to evidence-informed policy has been greater attention to experimental trials including randomised controlled trials ( RCTs). The aim of this paper is to examine the use of evidence, particularly the use of evidence from experimental trials, to inform national curriculum policy. To do this the teaching of grammar to help pupils' writing was selected as a case. Two well-regarded and influential experimental trials that had a significant effect on policy, and that focused on the effectiveness of grammar teaching to support pupils' writing, are examined in detail. In addition to the analysis of their methodology, the nature of the two trials is also considered in relation to other key studies in the field of grammar teaching for writing and a recently published robust RCT. The paper shows a significant and persistent mismatch between national curriculum policy in England and the robust evidence that is available with regard to the teaching of writing. It is concluded that there is a need for better evidence-informed decisions by policy makers to ensure a national curriculum specification for writing that is more likely to have positive impact on pupils. This paper addresses the question: How do teachers and school leaders respond to high stakes testing of pupils transitioning from primary to secondary school? It explores how a new test, the Level 6 test, operated with regard to primary/secondary school relationships in England. It draws on an analysis of qualitative interviews with teachers and school leaders in 20 primary schools that took part in the test, 40 school leaders that chose not to and 20 secondary-school leaders. Theoretical work on social boundaries is utilised to develop an argument that this test and its results acted as a boundary signifier, crystallising many of the tensions between primary and secondary schools. These tensions included the role of accountability regimes in requiring schools to demonstrate progress; narrowing of the curriculum and teaching to the test; and the extent to which test results can provide a true representation of pupil attainment. We conclude by suggesting the potential of the boundary signifier concept in relation to other tests at the primary/secondary boundary and other key transition points in education, and consider whether such tests can act as an ideal boundary object, serving to help overcome, rather than cement, barriers between schools. Curriculum and its associated assessment are at the heart of educational systems worldwide. In light of perceived national educational stagnation or decline, as well as of performance in international league tables such as Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), countries have embarked on curriculum and assessment reforms. This is particularly true in England, where currently wholesale changes are being introduced throughout the system. The curriculum and qualification system in England privileges that which is tested over any other expression of knowledge, which leads teachers to concentrate on teaching what is assessed, either externally through examination papers or internally through coursework. In the summer of 2012, following curriculum and assessment reforms to General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) qualifications, serious concerns were raised about the marking and awarding processes for GCSE English, culminating in legal action. Using that experience as an example of assessment policy and practice gone awry, this article explores the ramifications of rapid qualifications changes and posits that some of the problems that plagued GCSE English in 2012 could be repeated, albeit in different guises, after revised qualifications are introduced in 2015. English primary schools are considered quasi-collegial institutions within which staff communicate regularly and openly. The activities of staff, however, are bound by institutional norms and conditions and by societal expectations. Wider agendas of governmental control over the curriculum and external controls to ensure accountability and learning standards have influenced the development and purposes of middle leaders’ roles. This is a conceptual paper that explores issues around the agency of primary school middle leaders within a wider context of the political and educational agenda. Through a reconsideration of research conducted by one of the authors since the inception of the notion of ‘subject leaders’, we exemplify ways in which primary school middle leaders’ attitudes have developed and changed over the past 15 years. Introduction Career choice, sense of professional identity and career behaviour are influenced, subject to change and capable of development through interaction with the learning environment. In this paper workplace learning discourses are used to frame ongoing concerns associated with higher specialist training. Data from the first stage of a multimethods investigation into recruitment into and retention in specialties in the West Midlands is used to consider some possible effects of the specialist learning environment on recruitment and retention. Methods The aim of the study was to identify issues, through interviews with 6 consultants and questionnaires completed by specialist registrars from specialties representing a range of recruitment levels. These would inform subsequent study of attributes and dispositions relevant to specialist practice and recruitment. The data were analysed using NVivo© software for qualitative data management. Results Participants' perceptions are presented as bipolar dimensions, associated with: curriculum structure, learning relationships, assessment of learning, and learning climate. They demonstrate ongoing struggle between different models of workplace learning. Conclusion Changes in the postgraduate education of doctors seem set to continue well into the future. How these are reflected in the balance between workplace learning models, and how they influence doctors' sense of identity as specialists suggests a useful basis for examination of career satisfaction and recruitment to specialties. Assessment is widely considered to be the most significant issue affecting art and design practice at secondary level. The article begins with an historical overview of developments in and critiques of assessment procedures in England, Wales and Northern Ireland since the inception of GCSE examination. This is followed by a report of an attempt to carry out a systematic review of research on the impact of assessment on the art and design curriculum in secondary schools. Author conclusions and findings from eight studies subjected to in-depth analysis are discussed together with the implications of the review exercise for art education policy, practice and research. This article presents the results from a longitudinal study of students' choice of university in England. Students were surveyed initially when applying for university (Wave One) and then again when they were about to embark on their chosen course (Wave Two). The results from Wave Two demonstrated a high degree of consistency with the Wave One findings: course and university reputation are far more important and fees are relatively unimportant. However, a key result across both waves was that patterns of utility for students with no parental experience of university were significantly different from students whose parents had attended university. The utility associated with different levels of entry qualifications, of fees and of university and course reputation, differed between social groups. The study suggests that the benefits of going to a highly rated university may be undervalued in families that have no direct experience of higher education. In addition, whilst females are more significantly put off by universities with low entry requirements, the qualitative attitudinal statements included in the follow-up study seem to indicate that so-called 'softer' factors may also influence their choice. The article presents the authors' comments on the national school curriculum in England. According to the authors, the aims the National Curriculum were to create high standards and coherence in what is taught in schools and to ensure that all children get the opportunity to acquire basic essential knowledge in the key subject disciplines. The author says that Secretary of State for Education Michael Gove set up an advisory committee for the review for the new National Curriculum.

Context In 1996 the University of Liverpool introduced a new curriculum based on the recommendations published in Tomorrow's Doctors. This work examines how graduates of that course view their undergraduate curriculum and whether they consider it prepared them well for the pre-registration year. Methods Five focus groups were arranged with a selection of graduates from the first cohort to graduate from the reformed curriculum in order to ascertain their views on the course and how it had prepared them to work as pre-registration house officers (PRHOs). The focus groups were tape-recorded, transcribed and analysed. Results The PRHOs felt they had been well prepared for the PRHO year, citing the clinical experience of the final year, communication skills classes and the Clinical Skills Resource Centre as having been particularly beneficial. There were concerns about their basic science knowledge base although this had not affected their ability to work as PRHOs. They had criticisms of the way part of their course had been structured but overall they were happy with the content of the course. Discussion A reformed medical curriculum in the UK can prepare graduates well to work as junior doctors and can take away some of the anxiety associated with graduation; therefore, to that extent curriculum reform has worked. However, anxiety about undertaking the role of junior doctor seems to have been replaced by anxiety about knowledge base, despite having adequate knowledge to work as PRHOs. Students undertaking a reformed curriculum are wary about being the first people to use their training in the workplace. This factor may need to be considered when further reforms are introduced. Objectives This study aimed to explore patterns of attendance at classroom-based, taught education programmes for pre-registration house officers (PRHOs) and to identify reasons for non-attendance, and to consider implications for Foundation Programme curriculum delivery and suggest strategies for improving delivery. Method We analysed registers of attendance for education sessions for 3 local teaching hospitals in the Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Rutland (LNR) Healthcare Workforce Deanery, along with PRHO exit questionnaire returns (from 2001 to 2005). Results Despite a trend for attendance to fall slightly over the course of a rotation, attendance rates have, in general, remained relatively stable at around two-thirds. However, during most 4-month posts, a fifth or more of PRHOs missed half or more of all sessions. Two types of barrier to attendance were identified: ‘routine barriers’, which relate to hospital working patterns, and ‘contextual barriers’, which refer to the particularities of each hospital post. There was no evidence that doctors' motivation and commitment towards the education programme is a main determinant of attendance. Conclusions Contextual barriers to attendance, such as pressure being placed on PRHOs to remain on the ward, can be addressed. However, routine barriers to attendance, including on-call working patterns and annual leave, render it impossible to avoid significant numbers of education sessions being missed by PRHOs in each post during a rotation. En bloc teaching of basic generic skills prior to the start of the rotation plus greater use of online learning resources are examples of ways in which reliance on in-post, classroom-based programmes can be reduced. Medical students have traditionally received little education in palliative care. However, in 1999, as part of a revised medical curriculum, Year 4 undergraduates at Liverpool University participated in a 2-week programme of education in palliative care. To assess the effect of the education programme, 2 assessment scales were identified: the Self-efficacy in Palliative Care Scale (SEPC) (assessing efficacy in communication, patient management and multiprofessional teamworking) and the Thanatophobia Scale (assessing attitudes towards palliative care). The aim of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of these scales.The scales were examined by 5 palliative care doctors for content validity and appropriate wording. Following this, the SEPC and Thanatophobia Scales were completed by the undergraduates (n = 139) prior to and after completion of the education programme.Both scales were analysed independently on pre- and post-test scores. Cronbach's alphas of 0.84−0.85 and 0.92–0.95 were recorded, respectively, indicating high reliability. Varimax rotated principal components analysis of the SEPC Scale suggested 3 distinct factors, as theoretically expected, with high factor loadings of 0.45–0.89 at pre- and post-test. Principal components analysis of the Thanatophobia Scale suggested only 1 factor underlies the scale, as theoretically expected. All 7 items had high factor loadings of 0.60–0.81 at pre- and post-test.The results suggest that the SEPC and Thanatophobia Scales are valid and reliable assessment scales that may be of use when evaluating the impact of an education programme. This article focuses on testing for quasi-market forces in secondary education. The organization and quality of state education has been a recurring cause for concern in both Great Britain and the U.S. A prime reason for this concern is that poor schooling is believed to adversely affect productivity growth and international competitiveness. The quality of schooling, it is argued, is determined by the way in which education is provided and financed, and more generally by the way the education system is organized. Debate on the appropriate way of organizing the system has a long history, but in recent times can be traced to the work of few economists. These studies suggest that there are alternative ways of organizing education, ranging from complete centralization to a decentralized market-based approach. In a centralized system the state provides and finances education, one outcome of such a system being that there is little, if any, parental choice of schooling, and educational provision is highly standardized.' In contrast, the market-based approach is decentralized with complete freedom of choice and with each school having control over curriculum design and content. The outcome is a highly diversified educational provision.

A proposal was first made to the University of London in 1985 to establish an MSc degree in Endodontics. It was finally approved in 1988. The first course started in 1988, and is now offered by two schools of the University, the United Medical and Dental Schools of Guy's and St Thomas's Hospitals and the Institute of Dental Surgery. The course has three main components: a taught pan, clinical practice and a research project. The article comments on the series of lectures delivered at the University Institute of Education about the new method of science teaching in England. Both new syllabus content and a new teaching method for a more effective approach to the teaching of science is presented. One of the major aims of the course is to enable the bursars to take with them a practical way of alleviating the two chief obstacles to science education. The new system of science education will provide children a laboratory work that would be distinctly of an investigative type. It is also accompanied by a new introductory course in mathematics, which would be concerned with the mathematics of scientific research.

The article focuses on a group of people with learning disabilities at the University of Manchester in England called the Partnership Steering Group which is working with the university on a degree course in learning disability studies. In the article the author reflects on his experience of meeting with members of the group to discuss the degree course and the experiences of learning disabled people.
