ABSTRACT Aims There is a growing interest in very low rate [fewer than one cigarette per day (CPD)] and light (one to nine CPD) smokers and in some parts of the world their numbers appear to be increasing. This paper examined changes in prevalence over the past 5 years, cessation patterns, and smoking and demographic characteristics of very low rate, light and moderate-to-heavy (10+ CPD) smokers in England. Design Cross-sectional and longitudinal data from aggregated monthly waves of a household survey: the Smoking Toolkit Study. Setting England. Participants A total of 23 245 smokers interviewed between November 2006 and May 2011 and 4147 who provided data at 6-month follow-up. Measurements We compared the demographic and smoking characteristics between the three groups of smokers at baseline, and the rate of attempts to quit, use of aids to cessation and success of quit attempts at follow-up. Findings Very low rate smoking remained extremely rare (1.9% of smokers in 2006 to 2.8% in 2011), but light smoking became increasingly common (23.9-32.8%). Compared with moderate-to-heavy smokers, very low rate and light smokers were younger, more often female and from a higher socio-economic background. They were more motivated to quit and enjoyed smoking less. During the 6-month follow-up period, light smokers, but not very low rate smokers, were more likely to attempt to quit than moderate-to-heavy smokers. When they tried to quit, very low rate and light smokers used aids to cessation less than moderate-to-heavy smokers but still used them to a substantial degree: 18%, 31% and 44% used over-the-counter nicotine replacement therapy in their most recent quit attempt for the three types of smoker, respectively. Even very low rate smokers had a substantial failure rate: 65% failed in their most recent quit attempt within 6 months. Conclusions Very low rate (fewer than one cigarette per day) and light (one to nine cigarettes per day) smokers in England are at least as motivated to quit as heavier smokers. Although they use cessation medication less than heavier smokers and are more likely to succeed, they still use such medication and fail in quit attempts to a substantial degree. Risk for Permanent Pacemaker After Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation. Background: Permanent pacemaker (PM) requirement is a known complication after transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). There are, however, no systematic data concerning this complication. Objective: To determine the incidence and potential predictors of permanent PM requirement after TAVI based on published literature. Methods: We conducted a MEDLINE search to identify potentially relevant literature dealing with PM requirement after TAVI. Data were collected on paper extraction forms by 2 independent investigators. Results: There were 32 relevant published studies comprising data of 5,258 patients without an implanted PM before TAVI. An Edwards-Sapiens® prosthesis (ESP) was implanted in 2,887 patients, whereas 2,371 patients received a CoreValve® prosthesis (CVP). The crude incidence of PM implantation after TAVI was 15%. Six hundred and fourteen of 2,371 (25.8%) CVP patients and 189 of the 2,887 (6.5%) ESP patients had to receive a permanent PM (odds ratio [OR] 4.91, 95% confidence interval [CI] 4.12-5.86, P < 0.001). Presence of right bundle branch block (RBBB) before TAVI was a significant predictor for development of complete atrioventricular (AV) block and subsequent PM need (OR 1.358, 95% CI 1.001-1.841, P = 0.02). More than 90% of all AV-block requiring PM implantation occurred immediately or within 7 days after TAVI. Conclusion: Patients undergoing TAVI with implantation of CVP are at significantly higher risk for development of AV block and subsequent need for permanent PM, particularly if RBBB preexists. Medical Education 2012: 46: 267-276 Objectives We reviewed papers describing the development of instruments for assessing clinical communication in undergraduate medical students. The instruments had important limitations: most lacked a theoretical basis, and their psychometric properties were often poor or inadequately investigated and reported. We therefore describe the development of a new instrument, the Liverpool Undergraduate Communication Assessment Scale (LUCAS), which is intended to overcome some of these limitations. We designed LUCAS to reflect the theory that communication is contextually dependent, inherently creative and cannot be fully described within a conceptual framework of discrete skills. Methods We investigated the preliminary psychometric properties of LUCAS in two studies. To assess construct and external validity, we examined correlations between examiners' LUCAS ratings and simulated patients' ratings of their relationships with students in Year 1 formative ( n = 384) and summative ( n = 347) objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) samples. Item-total correlations and item difficulty analyses were also performed. The dimensionality of LUCAS was examined by confirmatory factor analysis. We also assessed inter-rater reliability; four raters used LUCAS to rate 40 video-recorded encounters between Year 1 students and simulated patients. Results Simulated patient ratings correlated with examiner ratings across two OSCE datasets. All items correlated with the total score. Item difficulty showed LUCAS was able to discriminate between student performances. LUCAS had a two-dimensional factor structure: we labelled Factor 1 creative communication and Factor 2 procedural communication. The intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.73 (95% confidence interval 0.54-0.85), indicating acceptable reliability. Conclusions We designed LUCAS to move the primary focus of examiners away from an assessment of students' enactment of behavioural skills to a judgement of how well students' communication met patients' needs. LUCAS demonstrated adequate reliability and validity. The instrument can be administered easily and efficiently and is therefore suitable for use in medical school examinations. Inappropriate complementary feeding increases risk of undernutrition, illness and mortality in infants and children. This paper aimed to determine the factors associated with inappropriate complementary feeding practices in Sri Lanka. The Sri Lanka Demographic and Health Survey 2006-2007 used a stratified two-stage cluster sample of ever-married women 15-49 years, and included details about foods given to children aged 6-23 months during the last 24 h. The new World Health Organization indicators for infant and young child feeding (IYCF) - (introduction of solid/semi-solid or soft foods; minimum dietary diversity; minimum meal frequency; and minimum acceptable diet) were calculated for 2106 children aged 6-23 months. These indicators were examined against explanatory variables with multivariate analyses to identify factors associated with inappropriate practices. Eighty-four per cent of infants aged 6-8 months were introduced to complementary food. The proportion of infants aged 6-8 months who consumed eggs (7.5%), fruits and vegetables other than those rich in vitamin A (29.6%) and flesh foods (35.2%) was low. Of children aged 6-23 months, minimum dietary diversity was 71%, minimum meal frequency 88% and minimum acceptable diet 68%. Children who lived in tea estate sector had a lower dietary diversity and minimum acceptable diet than children in urban and rural areas. Other determinants of not receiving a diverse or acceptable diet were lower maternal education, shorter maternal height, lower wealth index, lack of postnatal visits, unsatisfactory exposure to media and acute respiratory infections. In conclusion, complementary feeding indicators were adequate except in the 6-11 months age group. Subgroups with inappropriate feeding practices should be the focus of IYCF promotion programs. Lucena C, López JM, Abalos C, Robles V, Pulgar R. Statistical errors in microleakage studies in operative dentistry. A survey of the literature 2001-2009. Eur J Oral Sci 2011; 119: 504-510. © 2011 Eur J Oral Sci The aim of this study was to assess the literature on microleakage of direct restorations in operative dentistry indexed in the ISI Web of Science, in order to assess the robustness of the statistical methodology used. Our database included 226 scientific papers (published between 2001 and 2009 in 22 journals) from the journal citation report categories 'Dentistry, Oral Surgery and Medicine' and 'Materials Science, Biomaterials'. We reviewed all articles to find potential mistakes that are commonly made at different stages in the scientific research process. Microleakage was assessed quantitatively in 50 (22.2%) studies and qualitatively in 176 (77.8%) studies. In all studies reviewed the statistical methods used were appropriate for the category attributed to the outcome variable, but in 13% of the total, the chi-square test or parametric methods were inappropriately used afterwards. When the appropriate statistical methods were applied in studies that had originally employed inappropriate methods to analyse their data, and in which the authors provided raw data, an alteration of the conclusions was necessary in 15.4% of these re-analysed studies. This survey also showed that the statistical methodology applied varies considerably for similar experimental designs. Medical Education 2011: 45: 1041-1047 Context UK medical school traditional selection processes are faltering in their ability to distinguish among highly qualified candidates. New methods of selection, including the UK Clinical Aptitude Test (UKCAT), herald a new era in which candidates are selected on aptitude and also aim to widen participation. However, the predictive validity of UKCAT and its role in the selection process are yet to be defined. This paper examines current selection practices and questions the role that such an aptitude test may take. Objective This study is intended to determine whether UKCAT can select suitable candidates for interview. Methods The study was designed to determine whether selectors rejected fewer candidates with high rather than low UKCAT scores using routine selection techniques. Selector rejection rates for 812 candidates with high UKCAT scores and 200 candidates with low UKCAT scores were compared. Additionally, any relationships among UKCAT and subsequent interview performance scores were explored by examining the correlation coefficients between overall and component UKCAT and interview scores for 637 candidates with high UKCAT scores. Results The rejection rate before interview of candidates with low UKCAT scores was 2.7 times that of candidates with high UKCAT scores. However, no relationship between overall UKCAT score and overall interview score existed within a pre-selected cohort of applicants with high UKCAT scores (Kendall's correlation coefficient, tau b = − 0.004; p = 0.88). Conclusions UKCAT can facilitate the independent selection of appropriate candidates for interview when used as described. However, UKCAT is not predictive of success at interview. The long-term predictive validity of UKCAT is currently under investigation. Therefore, we conclude that UKCAT is best viewed as a useful adjunct to current selection processes. BJOG 2011;118:1383-1391. Objective To investigate the long-term impact of antenatal domestic violence on maternal psychiatric morbidity and child behaviour. Design Cohort study. Setting Avon, UK. Population or sample A birth cohort of 13 617 children and mother dyads were followed to 42 months of age. Methods Experiences of domestic violence and depressive symptoms were gathered at 18 weeks of gestation and up to 33 months after birth, together with maternal, paternal and child characteristics. Main outcome measures Child behavioural problems were assessed at 42 months using the Revised Rutter Questionnaire. Analysis Logistic regression with the use of multiple imputation employing chained equations for missing data. Results Antenatal domestic violence was associated with high levels of maternal antenatal (odds ratio [OR], 4.02; 95% confidence interval [CI], 3.4-4.8) and postnatal (OR, 1.29; 95% CI, 1.02-1.63) depressive symptoms after adjustment for potential confounders. Antenatal domestic violence predicted future behavioural problems at 42 months in the child before adjustment for possible confounding and mediating factors (OR, 1.87; 95% CI, 1.45-2.40); this association was not significant after adjustment for high levels of maternal antenatal depressive symptoms, postnatal depressive symptoms or domestic violence since birth. Conclusions Antenatal domestic violence is associated with high levels of both maternal antenatal and postnatal depressive symptoms. It is also associated with postnatal violence, and both are associated with future behavioural problems in the child at 42 months. Scand J Caring Sci; 2011; 25; 510-516 Oral health-related quality of life in older Swedish people with pain problems Objectives: The aim of the present paper was to explore the oral health-related quality of life in old Swedish people with pain problems, with special reference to demography, socio-economic factors, health, and general health-related quality of life. Method: Individuals ≥80 years (n = 186) who earlier reported pain problems answered two multi-item instruments on oral health-related quality of life (Oral Health Impact Profile, OHIP-14) and general health-related quality of life (Short Form Health Survey, SF-12), respectively. Socio-demographic and health questions were also inquired. Results: Both the oral and general health-related quality of life were rated very low. Two thirds (67.2%) reported at least one of the aspects in the OHIP-14 fairly often, very often or all the time. The mean additive score of the OHIP-14 was 14.6 (SD 10.5). The mean value of the physical component scale (PCS) of SF-12 was 25.9 (SD 6.2) and of the mental component scale (MCS) 44.1 (SD 11.5). The OHIP-14 was consistently and significantly correlated with self-rated general and oral health, chewing ability and MCS. The associations between self-rated general and oral health in relation to the OHIP-14 were independent of possible confounders: OR 3.63 (95% CI 1.58-8.32) and OR 2.68 (95% CI 1.44-4.99), respectively. Conclusion: Old people with pain problems experienced very low oral and general health-related quality of life. Personnel caring for the oldest with pain problems should be aware that oral health problems can contribute to a low quality of life and that oral care should be included in the general care. Background: The objective of this paper is to examine 10-year trends (1992 to 2002) in the number and type of indicators of DSM-IV abuse and dependence among whites, blacks, and Hispanics in the United States. Methods: Data are from the 1991 to 1992 National Longitudinal Alcohol Epidemiologic Survey (NLAES; n = 42,862) and the 2001 to 2002 National Epidemiologic Study on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC; n = 43,093). Both surveys used multistage cluster sample procedures to select respondents 18 years of age and older from the U.S. household population. Results: Increases in the prevalence of alcohol abuse between 1992 and 2002 seem associated with a rise in the prevalence of the indicator for 'hazardous use.' which usually means reports of driving after drinking. The decrease in dependence was not associated with changes in a particular indicator. In addition, both in 1992 and 2002, 12.3 to 15.4% of the men and 5.2 to 7.9% of the women were diagnostic 'orphans.' These respondents reported 1 or 2 indicators of alcohol dependence as present. Conclusions: The observed trends in number and types of indicators of DSM-IV alcohol abuse and dependence were probably triggered by a complex interplay between individuals' volume and pattern of drinking and reactions from the drinkers' social environment. The close association between hazardous use of alcohol and the prevalence of abuse deserves further discussion. A medical diagnostic category should not be so dependent on a criterion that may be influenced by social situations. Aims The burden of diabetes is considerable for racial and ethnic minority populations in many places in the USA and worldwide, often disproportionately affecting immigrant communities. This paper reports findings from a community-based participatory research study that described diabetes risk and awareness, assessed the association between perceived and actual risk (high, two or more diabetes risk factors; low, fewer than two risk factors) and identified factors associated with disease risk among Chinese and Hispanic / Latino immigrant populations in Portland, OR, USA. Methods Cross-sectional, self-reported data were collected from a purposive sample of 324 Chinese (n = 159) and Hispanic / Latino (n = 165) adults, aged 18-86 years [mean (SD) age, 45.2(17.9) years; 50.7% women). Analyses described differences in variable distributions. Logistic regression estimated odds ratios and 95%confidence intervals in pooled and ethnic group-specific samples. Results Approximately 43% of participants were at high risk for diabetes, regardless of ethnicity or age. Of those unaware of their risk, or who perceived themselves not to be at risk, 25-53%had two or more risk factors (high risk); these patterns varied by ethnicity. The proportion of participants who reported two or more risk factors and were unaware of their risk status (31.8% Hispanic / Latino; 17% Chinese) or self-identified as not at risk (12.5% Hispanic / Latino; 13.0% Chinese) was substantial. Factors associated with diabetes risk also varied by ethnicity. Conclusions This study assessed the degree and determinants of diabetes risk and awareness among local Hispanic / Latino and Chinese communities and identified significant variation between groups. The results are important because they highlight substantial diabetes risk among persons who misestimate or are unaware of their risk status, regardless of ethnicity, and, in the USA, the Chinese immigrant population commonly is not considered a high-risk group for Type 2 diabetes. Background Previous reviews demonstrate uncertainty about the effectiveness of nurse-led interventions in the management of hypertension. No specific reviews in diabetes have been identified. We have systematically reviewed the evidence for effectiveness of nurse-led interventions for people with diabetes mellitus. Methods In this systematic review and meta-analysis, searches of Medline, Embase, CINAHL and the Cochrane Central Trials register were undertaken to identify studies comparing any intervention conducted by nurses in managing hypertension in diabetes with usual doctor-led care. Additional citations were identified from papers retrieved and correspondence with authors. Outcome measures were absolute systolic and diastolic blood pressure, change in blood pressure, proportions achieving study target blood pressure and proportions prescribed anti-hypertensive medication. Results Eleven studies were identified. Interventions included adoption of treatment algorithms, nurse-led clinics and nurse prescribing. Meta-analysis showed greater reductions in blood pressure in favour of any nurse-led interventions (systolic weighted mean difference)5.8 mmHg,95% CI)9.6 to)2.0; diastolic weighted mean difference)4.2 mmHg,95% CI)7.6 to )0.7) compared with usual doctor-led care. Nooverall superiority in achievement of study targets or in the use of medication was evident for any nurse-based interventions over doctor-led care. Conclusions There is some evidence for improved blood pressure outcomes with nurse-led interventions for hypertension in people with diabetes comparedwith doctor-led care. Nurse-based interventions require an algorithm to structure care and there is some preliminary evidence for better outcomes with nurse prescribing. Background: There have been limited trend studies examining variations on the patterns of alcohol consumption among Whites, Blacks, and Hispanics in the United States. The current paper reports national trends in drinking patterns, volume of drinking (number of drinks per month), binge drinking, and drinking to intoxication among Blacks, Whites, and Hispanics over a period of 10 years and identifies sociodemographic predictors of these behaviors across the 3 ethnic groups. Methods: Data are from the 1991 to 1992 National Longitudinal Alcohol Epidemiologic Survey (NLAES; n = 42,862) and the 2001 to 2002 National Epidemiologic Study on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC; n = 43,093). Both surveys used multistage cluster sample procedures to select respondents 18 years of age and older from the U.S. household population. Results: Trends varied across different dimensions of drinking and ethnic groups. There were no statistically significant differences in the mean number of drinks consumed per month among men and women in any of the 3 ethnic groups between 1992 and 2002, but there was a significant rise in the proportion of current drinkers in both genders and in all 3 ethnic groups. Multivariate analysis indicated that, compared to Whites in 1992, Blacks and Hispanics did not increase their volume of drinking, but Whites did. Drinking 5 or more drinks in day at all did not increase between 1992 and 2002, but drinking 5 or more drinks at least once a month was more likely for all groups in 2002 compared to Whites in 1992. Drinking to intoxication at all was more likely among Whites in 2002 than 1992, but drinking to intoxication at least once a month was more likely among Whites and Blacks in 2002 than 1992. Conclusion: The only common trend between 1992 and 2002 across both genders and 3 ethnic groups was a rise in the proportion of drinkers. There was also a rise in drinking 5 or more drinks in a day (Whites, Blacks, and Hispanics) and drinking to intoxication (Whites and Blacks), but this was limited to those reporting such drinking at least once a month. The reasons for these changes are many and may involve complex sociodemographic changes in the population. Background: While the current knowledge base on the mental health effects of displacement is mainly limited to refugees residing in industrialised countries, this paper examines the impact of war-induced displacement and related risk factors on the mental health of Eastern Congolese adolescents, and compares currently internally displaced adolescents to returnees and non-displaced peers. Methods: Data were collected from a community sample of 819 adolescents aged 13 to 21 years, attending one of 10 selected schools across the Ituri district in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Respondents completed culturally adapted self-report measures of posttraumatic stress symptoms (using the Impact of Event Scale - Revised) and internalising and externalising behaviour problems (by means of the Hopkins Symptoms Checklist - 37 for Adolescents). Associated factors studied were age, sex, parental death, exposure to war-related violence and daily stressors. Results: Internally displaced persons (IDPs) reported highest mean scores for the IES-R and the HSCL-37A internalising scale, followed by returnees, while non-displaced adolescents scored significantly lower. However, ANCOVA tests showed that posttraumatic stress and internalising symptoms were mainly associated with traumatic exposure and daily stressors and not with displacement status. Externalising problem scores were associated with traumatic exposure, daily stressors and displacement. Remarkably, death of father was associated with fewer externalising problems. Sex was differently associated with internalising and externalising problems through traumatic and daily stressors. Conclusions: As IDPs are highly exposed to violence and daily stressors, they report most psychological distress, when compared to returnees and non-displaced peers. The distinct mental health outcomes for returned youngsters illustrate how enhancing current socio-economic living conditions of war-affected adolescents could stimulate resilient outcomes, despite former trauma or displacement. Ĉpk is used as an estimate of process capability and can reflect performance degradation due to both shifts in the process mean and variability. Exact upper and lower confidence limits for the actual parameter value are elusive. Objections to existing estimators focus on two areas: the difficulty of executing the needed computations and the excessive widths of those confidence bounds. The CPE estimator (so called since it relies on Ĉp ) which we derive in this paper is formed by simply multiplying Ĉpk by a value from the inverse chi-square distribution. A PASCAL computer program is supplied which generates those percentiles. Our CPE is compared via simulation to other estimators and is shown to be the preferred selection in most cases by providing the requisite probability coverage and narrow interval widths. Background: Despite the high prevalence of headache in patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), little data exist regarding the classification and characterization of headaches experienced by these patients. This paper describes a study of headache in patients with NF1 compared with healthy controls. Methods: In this transversal study, participants (aged 4-19 years) were classified into two groups: NF1 patients or control subjects. The diagnosis of NF1 was performed according to the diagnostic criteria of the National Institutes of Health Consensus Conference, and the headache diagnosis was performed according to the diagnostic criteria of the International Classification of Headache Disorders, Second Edition. All participants underwent physical and neurologic evaluation and completed a detailed headache questionnaire. Results: The comparison of 50 patients with NF1 and 50 age-matched controls revealed that the complaint of headache was significantly more frequent in the NF1 group than in the control group (CG) (62% vs 14%, x²(1) = 22.4; P < 0.001). Migraine was significantly more frequent in patients with NF1 than in the CG (54% vs 14%, x²(1) = 17.82; P < 0.001). No differences were found between the two groups regarding the use of simple analgesics (NF1: 14% vs CG: 5%, x²(1) = 1.18; P = 0.276). A retrospective cross‐sectional study was carried out in Wallonia (the southern region of Belgium) in which a 20‐question breastfeeding (BF) module was included in an immunization survey. The purpose of this paper is to compare exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) prevalences and BF practices for mothers giving birth in Baby‐friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) and non‐BFHI maternity facilities. A total of 557 mothers responded to BF questions when their child was 18–24 months old; 26.7% of them delivered in a BFHI maternity facility. At discharge, a larger proportion of children were exclusively breastfed if they were born in a BFHI maternity facility (76.5% vs. 65.8%, p = .02). The median duration of EBF (15.0 vs. 12.9 weeks, p = .3), and the proportion of children exclusively breastfed at 5 months (16.8% vs 15.8%, p = 1.0) were similar in both groups. Few mothers knew that EBF was recommended for the first 6 months of life (28.6% in BFHI vs 23.1% in non‐BFHI, p = .2). For most groups of the population examined, the rates of BF tended to be higher in BFHI facilities, but many differences were not significant. More specifically, BFHI seemed to boost BF practices among mothers more likely to breastfeed, but the Initiative did not seem to trigger enhanced BF practices in mothers traditionally less likely to breastfeed (except for indifferent/negative partner's attitude and mothers of Belgian origin). Influencing the BF practices of mothers less likely to breastfeed requires a special attention with complementary actions in maternity facilities as well as in community services. Abstract: Background and purpose: Upper limb activity measures for children with cerebral palsy have a number of limitations, for example, lack of validity and poor responsiveness. To overcome these limitations, we developed the Children's Arm Rehabilitation Measure (ChARM), a parent‐reported questionnaire validated for children with cerebral palsy aged 5–16 years. This paper describes both the development of the ChARM items and response categories and its psychometric testing and further refinement using the Rasch measurement model. Methods: To generate valid items for the ChARM, we collected goals of therapy specifically developed by therapists, children with cerebral palsy, and their parents for improving activity limitation of the upper limb. The activities, which were the focus of these goals, formed the basis for the items. Therapists typically break an activity into natural stages for the purpose of improving activity performance, and these natural orders of achievement formed each item's response options. Items underwent face validity testing with health care professionals, parents of children with cerebral palsy, academics, and lay persons. A Rasch analysis was performed on ChARM questionnaires completed by the parents of 170 children with cerebral palsy from 12 hospital paediatric services. The ChARM was amended, and the procedure repeated on 148 ChARMs (from children's mean age: 10 years and 1 month; range: 4 years and 8 months to 16 years and 11 months; 85 males; Manual Ability Classification System Levels I = 9, II = 26, III = 48, IV = 45, and V = 18). Results: The final 19‐item unidimensional questionnaire displayed fit to the Rasch model (chi‐square p = .18), excellent reliability (person separation index = 0.95, α = 0.95), and no floor or ceiling effects. Items showed no response bias for gender, distribution of impairment, age, or learning disability. Discussion: The ChARM is a psychometrically sound measure of upper limb activity validated for children with cerebral palsy aged 5–16 years. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we evaluated the effectiveness, safety and comfort of StatLock for the securement of peripherally-inserted central catheters. PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, WanFang Database, and China Science and Technology Journal Database were searched. Randomized, controlled trials comparing StatLock with tape or suture on the performance of securing peripherally-inserted central catheters were selected. Meta-analysis was performed using Review Manager 5.3 software. Thirteen randomized, controlled trials involving 1970 patients were included. Our results showed that StatLock reduced the incidence of catheter dislodgement and unplanned removal. Moreover, patients in the StatLock group had lower incidence of skin ulceration, phlebitis, catheter-related bloodstream infection, and cellulitis, and felt more comfortable compared with those in the control group. Current evidence suggests that the StatLock securement device offer advantages over tape and suture in preventing catheter-related complications and improving patient comfort. However, as considerable heterogeneity was found among the included studies, and the quality of evidence for main outcomes was relatively low, the results should be viewed with caution.
