The article discusses the highlights of the 37th Annual General Meeting of the British Ecological Society held in the University of Oxford in Oxford, England on January 5 to 7, 1956. A soirée was held at the university's Department of Botany at which exhibits illustrating the ecological work in progress at Oxford were shown. A series of coloured slides of New Zealand vegetation were shown by professor Gordon of New Zealand. Some of the topics of the papers read at the meeting, include field populations of Calliphorine flies.

Examining the concepts underpinning the reasoning processes of social worker's decision‐making provides important insights into how social work practice is undertaken. This paper examines one of the major discourses used by social workers in decision reasoning in a non‐governmental organization child protection context in Aotearoa/New Zealand: family maintenance. This study found that family maintenance as a concept was strongly privileged by social workers. This resulted in attempts to preserve families and created a hierarchy of preferred decision outcomes. A preference for family maintenance was supported by legal, moral, psychological and Māori cultural concepts. This pattern of constructs underpinned the ‘weighing up of harms’ when considering removal, and generally reflected a child welfare orientation. In addition to this, it was found that ‘family’ was broadly defined, and could include people who had a relationship with the children, or Māori definitions of extended family, in addition to legal ones. The New Zealand Dietetic Association (NZDA) was founded in 1943 and is one the most well-established professional organisations in New Zealand. The Association currently represents around 500 individual dietitians and associated professionals practising in diverse areas of dietetics throughout the country. Corporate membership is also available; at present there are around 15 corporate members of the Association. The NZDA aims to ensure that members are recognised as the most credible source of food and nutrition knowledge within New Zealand, and also aims to contribute to better food and nutrition for all New Zealanders. The key goals of the Association are to sustain a strong and active membership by continuing to develop benefits offered to members, to enhance the profile of the dietetic profession, and to provide professional support to members to help strengthen their professional performance. The activities of the Association are diverse and include promotion of good nutrition through the media, active involvement in making submissions, e.g. on government policy on nutrition, organisation of a national annual conference, production of numerous publications, provision of information via its website, and the development of partnerships with key stakeholders and industry colleagues to promote good nutrition amongst the population of New Zealand. An introduction to this special issue of "Asia Pacific Journal of Human Resources," including the key objectives of the formation of an academic branch in the Human Resources Institute of New Zealand (HRINZ), the launch of the Research Forum of the HRINZ, and overviews of papers published in this issue, is presented.

The present study draws on the work–family and cross‐national management literature to examine the relationships between Family‐Supportive Organizational Perceptions (FSOP), work–family enrichment, and job burnout across five countries with different cultural backgrounds: Malaysia, New Zealand, France, Italy, and Spain. Using a combined sample of 980 employees, we find support for a partial mediation model in which FSOP is positively associated with work–family enrichment, which in turn is negatively related to job burnout. Given our focus on support, we test the moderating role of the cultural value humane orientation, that is, the extent to which a society values altruism, kindness, and compassion. The five countries in our sample offer variation in their country‐level scores as determined by the GLOBE study (House et al., 2004). We found that individuals from cultures that scored higher in "as is" humane orientation (i.e., scores for actual practices) experienced lower job burnout when FSOP increased. This pattern was reversed when considering "should be" humane orientation (i.e., scores for ideal values). In recent years, the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM) has increasingly focused on the need for high-quality research in emergency medicine (EM). One important initiative was the establishment of the ACEM Foundation, which among other responsibilities, is required to support clinical research through the provision of research funding and other measures. In February 2015, the Foundation held a Research Forum that was attended by the leading EM researchers from Australasia. The Forum aimed to determine how a productive research culture could be developed within the ACEM. Nine key objectives were determined including that research should be a core business of the ACEM and a core activity of the EM workforce, and that EM research should be sustainable and adequately supported. Partnerships between organisations are seen as one of the building blocks of the ‘third way’ approach to welfare provision in both Europe and New Zealand. While there is much discussion on building social capital and partnership working, such partnerships are usually perceived as being between government and community or private organisations. There is a gap in the literature in two specific areas: partnerships formed between two community-based social service organisations and partnerships formed between indigenous, or immigrant peoples, and non-indigenous organisations. This article explores such a partnership – that between the Ngai Tahu Maori Law Centre (an indigenous organisation) and the Dunedin Community Law Centre (a non-indigenous organisation). The article analyses this relationship and strategies employed by both organisations to develop trust, diminish risk and equalise control. Lastly, the article suggests that the model of interaction articulated here could be promulgated to other sites within the social services in New Zealand and the Americas, and within the European context. The purpose of this article is to study the efficacy and deficiency of purchase of service contracting in helping the voluntary organisations in the Otago/Southland region in New Zealand and the Community Funding Agency (now defunct) achieve a set of specific objectives. The findings are based on the information collected from (a) the responses of 57 participating voluntary organisations to the questionnaire mailed to them, and (b) face-to-face, open-ended interviews with 28 voluntary sector managers, the three outreach workers operating in the Otago/Southland area at the time of writing and eight people formerly associated with the Community Funding Agency at senior management level. This, article examines the concept of accountability and its implications for social service organizations. Accountability, it is argued, is a theoretically embedded concept, with each theory producing various conflicting models of accountability. The article seeks to map and structure the various models of accountability, highlighting the differences between the models and their implifications for social service organizations. The models chosen are relevant to the Aotearoa/New Zealand context and also to countries' in wetern Europe as they include the systems of political economy present within recent history: social democratic and neo-liberal, and also a coherent alternative, the communitarian model. This article provides an overview of labor relations in New Zealand agriculture. In New Zealand, unlike many other countries, the organizers of trade unions to represent farm workers have not been faced with the problem of a shrinking pool of potential members. However, they have been confronted with qualitative changes in the nature of the farm labor force and its distribution. Furthermore, union organization has been made more difficult by a rapidly changing farm labor force as a result of high levels of staff turnover. The outcome was the formation of the non-union Farm Workers' Association and the passage of the Agricultural Workers Act 1977 with the help of Federated Farmers and a National government. While the legislation created a system very similar to that requested by the New Zealand Workers' Union before 1939 farmers continued to be protected from compulsory unionism and a standardized working week. Unquestionably, the Farm Workers' Association has found it impossible to maintain the momentum achieved between 1974-1977 when it became the officially recognized voice of farm labor and its long term survival is open to doubt. The gradual demise of the Association may give the New Zealand Workers' Union its greatest chance of once again representing the majority of rural workers.

The article presents a brief summary of the history of the "Nutrition and Dietetics" journal and the developmental history of dietetics in New Zealand and its journal publication. The "Nutrition and Dietetics" journal is a publication of the Dietitians Association of Australia and has undergone several changes over the years. Meanwhile, the "Journal of the New Zealand Dietetic Association" has been a forum for New Zealand dietitians for more than 50 years.
