The article focuses on several issues and events related to economics. The "Pacific Economic Review" journal has become part of the Social Sciences Citation Index. More than 120 individuals from 80 universities in China participated in the 5th National Conference on International Trade held in Hong Kong in August 2006. The Hong Kong Economic Association is calling for papers to be presented during its fourth Biennial Conference in December 2006.

The last dozen years have seen a considerable investment of resources into the research and development of group support systems (GSS) technology. This paper describes how GSS was used to support a process improvement project in a Hong Kong accounting firm. Although the project encountered many difficulties, the application of action research facilitated the adaptation of the GSS to the shifting circumstances, and the project was successfully completed. A variety of lessons concerning the use of GSS are presented, while increased use of action research in complex organizational contexts is recommended. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents information on various conferences on dermopathology. Ninth International Congress of Dermopathology will be held from May 19-22, 2004 in Beijing, China. The overall Program will consist of Plenary Lectures, Symposia, Free Paper Sessions and Poster Discussions. The Tenth World Congress of Pediatric Dermatology will be held from July 7-10, 2004 in Italy. The International Centre for Study and Research in Dermatology will organize this Scientific Meeting in association with Department of Dermatology of the Catholic University of Sacred Heart and with the aid of the Italian Group of Pediatric Dermatology, and the European Society of Pediatric Dermatology.

The article focuses on a joint symposium of British Ecological Society and the Ecological Society of China on environmental problems of industrialized countries, which was held at Beijing, China, in September 1988. Industrial development is the main cause of the environmental pollution in both China and the Great Britain. Topics included in the symposium are, air and water pollution, its management, land restoration, rural and urban ecosystems and nature conservation. Environmental awareness among the people of the country lead to the formation of pollution control schemes.

Drawing on 17 months of ethnographic fieldwork (2007-2011), this article critically examines the consequences of two global health initiatives (GHIs), the Global Fund and the Gates Foundation, on NGOs engaged in HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment among gay men in northwest China. I argue that a short-term surge in funding provided by GHIs between 2008 and 2010 exacerbated preexisting conflicts between NGOs by promoting a neoliberal process in which the state outsourced public health services to civil society organizations, deliberately encouraging a climate of competition among NGOs. I also show how GHIs encouraged the bureaucratization and medicalization of one grassroots gay NGO, channeling its activities away from broader political and social objectives and compelling the group to develop a narrower and more entrepreneurial emphasis on HIV testing and treatment. This article contributes to a deeper ethnographic understanding of the complex and perhaps unintended consequences of GHIs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article focuses on the Golden Jubilee celebration of the Society of Anaesthetists of Hong Kong (SAHK). The celebration took place at the Hong Kong Convention Centre overlooking Hong Kong, China harbor on August 20, 2005. The SAHK was founded by Zoltan Lett and H. P. L. Ozorio. It has maintained a close relationship with the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland. It continues to flourish through all the political changes that have occurred.

Early states like China and India have been experiencing more rapid economic growth in recent decades. We show that more rapid growth by early starters has been the norm in economic history, and that the “reversal of fortune” associated with the European overseas expansion was both exceptional and temporary. Not only was the post-1500 reversal in the process of being reversed after 1960, but also the advantage conferred by early development in the latter period was considerably greater than the growth rate disadvantage that it conferred during 1500–1960, implying a rapid undoing of the first reversal. This study found that women-friendly policies are not prevalent in organizations in Hong Kong. To ascertain if organizations that are more women-friendly have more committed employees, working men and women in the territory were surveyed. Controlling for 'national origin of organization', the research results indicate that family- and work-related factors impact on both women's and men's organizational commitment. But women-friendly policies have a positive impact only on women--and only on their affective commitment, not on continuance commitment. The finding indicates that employees who are more likely to benefit directly from progressive policies that symbolize concern for them would become psychologically more attached to their organizations than those who perceive little value in the policies for their work lives. Previous research has revealed the following three challenges for knowledge sharing: awareness of expertise distribution, motivation for sharing, and network ties. In this case study, we examine how different generations of information and communication technologies ( ICTs), ranging from e-mail to micro-blogging, can help address these challenges. Twenty-one interviews with employees from a multinational company revealed that although people think social media can better address these challenges than older tools, the full potential of social media for supporting knowledge sharing has yet to be achieved. When examining the interconnections among different ICTs, we found that employees′ choice of a combination of ICTs, as affected by their functional backgrounds, could create 'technological divides' among them and separate resources. This finding indicates that having more ICTs is not necessarily better. ICT integration, as well as support for easy navigation, is crucial for effective knowledge search and sharing. Adaptation to local culture is also needed to ensure worldwide participation in knowledge sharing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article discusses the adoption of the ISO 9000 Series Standards by the Republic of China. The Republic of China has decided to use the series as the Chinese National Standards (CNS). The executive secretary of the Total Quality Promotion Committee at the Industrial Technology Research Institute was commissioned in March 1991 to compile and translate the series. At the end of May, a draft of the national standards was circulated among members of the committee for approval, before its acceptance as the CNS 12680 series by the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
