This article presents abstracts of papers presented at the 1964 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Criminology in Montreal, Canada, on December 28-30, 1964. The paper entitled Father-Daughter Incest: Treatment of the Family, reports on the treatment of twenty families with the problem of father-daughter incest where the father did not serve a prison sentence but was placed on probation. The paper entitled Evaluation of Records in Delinquency Research, focuses on the Southern California Records Matching Project which deals with the manner in which the records of delinquency adjudicating agencies at the local level maybe linked with Federal Census Records in order to maximize the efficiency of data collection and analysis. The paper entitled Juvenile Court Judge's Institute, summarized attacks on the Juvenile Court from any quarters, the weaknesses that inspire these attacks, and the crucial role that the Juvenile Court has to play in spearheading the introduction of personalized justice in the administration of the criminal law. The paper entitled A Spectrum of Sexual Problems Found in an Out-Patient Setting, focuses on the Forensic Clinic which was established in 1956. It is an out-patient division of the Toronto Psychiatric Hospital operated by the Ontario Department of Health under provincial statute.

This article provides certain abstracts of papers presented at the Fifteenth Annual Meeting of the Society for Psychophysiological Research, which was held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Toronto, Ontario, in October 1975. Members of the Program Committee were J. Richards Jennings, James Avcrill, Anne Schell, Neil Schnciderman and Gary E. Schwartz. Symposia and mini-courses comprised most of the day-rime program. Research report accepted for presentation were given and discussed informally at two Science Fairs, one during October 17, 1975 and the other on October 19, 1975.

The purpose of this discussion paper is to explore how nurses can be strategically poised to advocate for needed policy change in support of greater income equality and other social determinants of health. We adapted Bronfenbrenner's social‐ecological model to highlight how four broad pervasive subsystems shape the opportunities that nurses have to engage in advocacy at the policy level. These subsystems include organizations (the microsystem), professional bodies (the mesosystem), public policies (the exosystem), and societal values (the macrosystem). On the basis of this adapted model, we recommend changes among modifiable elements of the microsystem and mesosystem that can help position nurses (ecologically and collectively) to advocate for public policy change and use examples from a Canadian context to illustrate these points. We believe that the ideas arising from this model can be widely used where policy action on the social determinants of health is needed to inform, guide, and frame change efforts and advocacy work. The article comments on the paper "Convergence in International Unionism, etc.: The Case of Canada and the USA," by Leo Troy in the March 1992 issue which argues that the commonly held belief that employer opposition to unionism and collective bargaining is more intense in the U.S. than in Canada, is erroneous. Troy criticizes the paper by Anil Verma and Mark Thomson entitled "Managerial strategies in Canada and the US in the 1980s," which was published in 1989 and focused on interviews with senior managers in seven industries in four provinces and declared that the respondents did not want to displace existing labor unions. Troy's argument that the respondents are not willing to state their true feelings regarding unions, is not true.

The article focuses on the Annual Meeting of the National Microfilm Association held at the Hotel Carter, Cleveland on April 1 and 2, 1954. Delegates from every part of the country, from Canada and a visitor from Pakistan attended the two day meeting to participate in a general and technical program which explored the current status and latest advances of techniques of micro-documentary reproduction under the leadership of nationally known authorities. The program featured important papers on general and technical subjects.

This paper presents a two-phased research project aiming to improve email triage for public administration managers. The first phase developed a typology of email classification patterns through a qualitative study involving 34 participants. Inspired by the fields of pragmatics and speech act theory, this typology comprising four top level categories and 13 subcategories represents the typical email triage behaviors of managers in an organizational context. The second study phase was conducted on a corpus of 1,703 messages using email samples of two managers. Using the k- NN ( k-nearest neighbor) algorithm, statistical treatments automatically classified the email according to lexical and nonlexical features representative of managers' triage patterns. The automatic classification of email according to the lexicon of the messages was found to be substantially more efficient when k = 2 and n = 2,000. For four categories, the average recall rate was 94.32%, the average precision rate was 94.50%, and the accuracy rate was 94.54%. For 13 categories, the average recall rate was 91.09%, the average precision rate was 84.18%, and the accuracy rate was 88.70%. It appears that a message's nonlexical features are also deeply influenced by email pragmatics. Features related to the recipient and the sender were the most relevant for characterizing email. The article comments on the paper "Convergence in International Unionism, etc.: The Case of Canada and the USA," by Leo Troy in the March 1992 issue which argues that differences in industrial relations systems have resulted in convergent union trends, rather than divergent trends as claimed by most researchers. However, the existence of convergence is not supported by Troy's disaggregated data. Union membership information cannot be as accurate and consistent over time as Troy assumes it to be. Moreover, Troy fails to consider the difference between the effect on union density of the growth of the workforce, net membership increases through new organizing, and reduction in membership due to declining employment in companies with unions.

Recent approaches to understanding change in organizations have moved beyond just looking at structure and have focused on the role of values in defining the manner in which organizations change. This article integrates the concepts of design archetypes, tracks and high impact systems in an effort to understand the patterns of change for an institutionally specific set of organizations. The sample used for the study was a set of Canadian national sport organizations undergoing institutional change. Three design archetypes (Kitchen Table, Boardroom and Executive Office) that represent institutionally specific coherent value-structure relationships were used to show that patterns of change are determined by the extent to which the coherence of organizational design elements shift over time. Using these design archetypes as a model for change, tracks were identified that provided an indication of the degree and direction of change and the extent to which design coherence was maintained. This paper shows that there is variety in organizational design coherence and that this is related to patterns of change. In addition, reorientations to a new design are signalled by changes in structures or systems that are central to the organization's purpose and as such can have a high impact on moving the organization to a new design. The article offers information on the formation of the Canadian Association for Information Science/L'Association Canadienne des Sciences de L'Information (CAIS-ACSI) and its activities. It states that CAIS-ACSI was established in 1971 to foster the enhancement of information science in Canada and to facilitate information exchange concerning the use, access, retrieval, management and dissemination of information. CAIS-ACSI communicates with its members through the "Canadian Journal of Information and Library Science" (CJILS). The association conducts its conference every year in late May or early June.

This article presents news about the Canadian Economics Association. The minutes of the 39th Annual General Meeting of the association is presented. The meeting was held at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario on May 29, 2005, and was chaired by association president Gregor Smith. The report of the secretary-treasurer is also presented. The article focuses on the 37th annual general meeting of Canadian Economics Association (CEA), held on June 1, 2003. The financial results of CEA for 2002 were very good. Net income was positive for the second year in a row after the deficit in 2000. The financial results for 2003 would be weaker. Institutional revenues were lost when one of the subscription agents went bankrupt in late 2002. The bankruptcy will also effect the net income of CPP in 2003.

This article presents information related to the fact that the "36th Annual Meeting of the Society for Psychophysiological Research," will be held from October 16, 1996 to October 20, 1996, at Hotel Vancouver in Vancouver, British Columbia. The article presents information on the Canadian Dermatological Association. It states that after 20 years of evolution, first as the inter-urban Dermatological Society, then as the Canadian Branch of the British Association of Dermatology and Syphilology and including an important role as the Section of Dermatology of the Canadian Medical Association, the association reached maturity in 1946 and assumed its proper and distinctive title of the Canadian Dermatological Association (CDA). In 1948 the CDA achieved complete independence with the approval of a resolution that meetings of the CDA may not be held at the same time as the Canadian Medical Association.

The article discusses professionalism and discontentment in nursing. The stirrings of discontent are not Uncommon among Canadian nurses today. For many members of the nursing work force, provincial nursing associations are losing their relevance and their effectiveness. The erosion of their identity may be traced, in part, to the establishment and growth of independent nurses' unions following the October 1973 Supreme Court of Canada decision that provincial professional associations were company dominated. Thus, they could not be certified as nursing units for collective bargaining purposes.

Rationale, aims, and objectives: Clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) endeavour to incorporate the best available research evidence together with the clinically informed opinions of leading experts in order to guide clinical practice when dealing with a given condition. There has been increased interest in CPGs that are evidence based and that promote best practice, a central component of which is incorporating the best available research predicated on strong study designs. Despite this soaring interest, there remains heterogeneity in the methodological quality of many CPGs, which may have an effect on the quality of services that clinicians offer. In light of this, this study examined the quality of the methodology used to develop two CPGs of the Canadian Psychiatric Association (CPA). Method: The CPA's guidelines for the management of anxiety disorders (2006) and for the treatment of depressive disorders (2001) were assessed by trained raters using the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation II Instrument scale. Results: The blind ratings of three trained raters demonstrated that the anxiety and depression CPGs had a number of strengths and important weaknesses. Conclusion: Implications for the development of future CPGs on anxiety and depression, including recommendations to improve guideline quality in psychiatry in particular, are discussed. Discusses the Canadian experience in the collaboration between the federal government and the voluntary sector. Key issues of interest; Analysis of pertinent topics and relevant issues; Implications on policy analysis and management.

Although we have fairly good knowledge of the impact of official bilingualism at the federal level and of official unilingualism in Quebec on language practice in government, we know less about whether these changes in language policies have led to shifts in language practice in civil-society organizations. The Royal Commission on Bilingualism and Biculturalism carried out an extensive investigation of language practices in the private sector and in voluntary associations. Using the royal commission's work on associations representing the general interests of business, this article examines language practices of these associations three decades after the royal commission's studies were published. The authors argue that the cordiality found between French and English in general business associations in the late 1960s continues to be the rule in these types of associations today. This cordiality, however, is rooted in a change in linguistic relations. Federal-level associations tend to have accommodated institutional bilingualism but retain English as their language of work. Quebec-based associations have moved to conform to official unilingualism. Moreover, the number of non-francophones in positions of authority in the Quebec groups has diminished, with executive structures now being dominated by francophones. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

State "advocacy structures"--agencies nominally designated to advance the status of collective social movements in public policy and society--must operate under conflicting criteria for "effectiveness." While government actors likely measure effectiveness as the ability to manage a policy issue--advancing policy influence by prioritizing and packaging demands--collective movements additionally or primarily emphasize structures' performance as representatives of the priorities and diversity of movements. This consequently leads to differing evaluations of agency "effectiveness." A case study of the Ontario Women's Directorate (OWD) analyzes the inherent conflicts and tensions between these two roles, particularly under repeated changes in government. The experiences of the OWD and other advocacy structures suggest that conflicting criteria are inherent and unavoidable in such institutions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article utilizes an internationally comparative data set to examine the potentiality of comprehensive business associations to define and articulate the interests of business as a whole. We argue that the organizational structures of comprehensive associations - the degree to which they integrate diverse interest areas and they compete with one another- are critical to the degree of probable influence gained in a given country. Using data from seven countries - Austria, Canada, the Federal Republic of Germany, Italy, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom - a concept of business cohesion is constructed based on these structural properties. Having differentiated among the countries in terms of the cohesion of business associations, we then relate these differences to variations in the participation of associations in the formulation and implementation of public policy. The article presents a discussion on the effects of Oriental immigration on the ideology and practices of the organized labor movement in Canada from the Eighteen Eighties, when the Trades and Labor Congress (TLC) of Canada was founded, until the close of the Second World War. In order to obtain an adequate historical perspective, the data were reviewed in the context of four of the major periods of Canadian social and economic development: industrial capitalism and the rise of the city with the concomitant birth of nation-wide unionism (1880-1899); the development of western Canada and the tidal wave of immigration (1900-1914); from the First World War to the depression (1914-1929); from the depression to the close of the Second World War (1930-1946). During this first period there was incorporated into the Platform of Principles of the TLC a ninth and new principle which read "Exclusion of all Chinese from Canada." This policy led the TLC into conflict with the Federal Government and with a large section of the employer class. Organized labor claimed that, in this principle, it was supporting the best interests of the country as a whole.
