This article presents the papers to be discussed at the annual meeting of the Rural Sociological Society in East Lansing, Michigan on September 5, 1956. Our own Kenneth Boulding, in The Organizational Revolution, profoundly observed the rapid growth of "associations" of one form or another; and with that insight, peculiar to economists, commented on the many factors that accounted for this phenomenon. There were "supply and demand" elements, and all of them contributed to the overall pattern that made for more and more organizations. The American Finance Association is one of these, and is currently a robust thirty years of age--in the prime of life--and the proud parent of its illustrious offspring, The Journal of Finance, now beginning its twenty-fifth volume. Most members, and there are currently more than 5,000 members and subscribers of various categories, are only dimly aware, at best, of the beginnings and evolution of the Association, for no formal history has ever been printed. This section presents the August 2009 proceedings of the Policy Studies Organization (PSO). It enumerates the officers of the PSO, including president Paul Rich and vice presidents Victoria Basolo and David Merchant. It also offers an overview of meetings of the organization, as well as endowments and awards it gives to individuals and groups.

It is commonly believed that the widespread use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) facilitates the fragmentation of daily activities across times and spaces. However, a clear conceptualisation of what fragmentation is and how it can be measured empirically has been lacking. As a consequence, hardly any empirical evidence has been provided for these notions. The goal of this paper is twofold: (1) to propose a theoretical and methodological framework for identifying and measuring activity fragmentation; and (2) to assess temporal fragmentation empirically and consider its associations with ICT usage while controlling for sociodemographic variables, residential context, day of the week, activity pattern characteristics and some attitudinal variables. Activity fragmentation is defined as a process whereby a certain activity is divided into several smaller pieces, which are performed at different times and/or locations. The proposed theoretical and methodological framework covers three main dimensions of fragmentation: the number of fragments; the distribution of the sizes of fragments; and the temporal configuration of fragments. Based on travel diary data from the Netherlands the analytical results are insightful and promising. The framework is not only capable of detecting temporal activity fragmentation for various trip purposes, but there are also indications of a positive relation between ICT usage and temporal fragmentation. The article presents a paper manifesting the concerns, arguments and thoughts of all who participated in the Summer Institute in the Geographics of Justice (SIGJ) 2007 in Athens, Georgia which was sponsored by "Antipode" and the International Critical Geography Group. It discusses several issues that remain subjects of anxiety for junior and senior scholars including the changing nature of radical geography, while raising various questions regarding the current state of the academy. It briefly described the participants as geographers of justice and radical geographers. It also explains the materials and barriers that shape scholars, likewise the future of radical geographies.

The members of any functioning modern society live their lives amid complex networks of overlapping institutions. Apart from the major political institutions of law and government, however, much normative political theory seems to regard this institutional fabric as largely a pragmatic convenience. This paper contests this assumption by reflecting on how institutions both constrain and enable spheres of effective action and responsibility. In this way a society's institutional fabric constitutes, in Samuel Scheffler's phrase, an infrastructure of responsibility. The paper discusses three key normative aspects of this infrastructure. First, institutions define roles and rules, alongside forms of sanction and encouragement, so as to realise limited forms of practical, normative agreement. Second, institutions allocate and adjudicate distinct responsibilities. This creates separate spheres of initiative, ensuring responsibilities are fulfilled and providing for structured disagreement and change. Third, because we move through a plurality of institutions and associations, we experience varying responsibilities and forms of recognition. Individual identities thus depend on several different forms of recognition, and are well placed to resist totalising or fundamentalist temptations. In sum, the paper argues that a liberal institutional fabric provides essential moral stability, though not an undesirable fixity. By containing the fragility and dangers of individual moral judgment, our institutional fabric allows such judgment to play a valuable role in human affairs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims This paper provides a description of the rationale, study design, treatments and assessment procedures used in the Cannabis Youth Treatment (CYT) experiment. Design CYT was designed to (a) test the relative effectiveness, cost and benefitcost of five promising treatment interventions under field conditions and (b) provide evidence based manual-guided models of these interventions to the treatment field. Setting The study involved two community-based treatment programs and two major medical centers.. Participants Participants were 600 adolescents recruited from the regular intake who were between the ages of 12 and 18, had used marijuana in the past 90 days, and met one or more criteria of dependence or abuse. Interventions Participants were randomly assigned to one of five interventions: Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Family Support Network (FSN), Adolescent Community Reinforcement Approach (ACRA), or Multidimensional Family Therapy (MDFT). Measurements Self-report data were collected at intake, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months post discharge using the Global Appraisal of Individual Needs (GAIN), as well as several supplemental self-reports, collateral reports, urine testing, and service logs. Findings This paper reports on the study's implementation including the psychometric properties of the measures (alphas over 0.8), validity of self-report (kappa over 0.6), high rates of treatment completion (81% completed two or more months), and high rates of follow-up (over 94% per wave). Conclusions The feasibility of implementing the CYT manual-guided treatment and quality assurance model in community-based adolescent treatment programs is discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim The management of large non-pedunculated colorectal polyps ( LNPCPs) is complex, with widespread variation in management and outcome, even amongst experienced clinicians. Variations in the assessment and decision-making processes are likely to be a major factor in this variability. The creation of a standardized minimum dataset to aid decision-making may therefore result in improved clinical management. Method An official working group of 13 multidisciplinary specialists was appointed by the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland ( ACPGBI) and the British Society of Gastroenterology ( BSG) to develop a minimum dataset on LNPCPs. The literature review used to structure the ACPGBI/ BSG guidelines for the management of LNPCPs was used by a steering subcommittee to identify various parameters pertaining to the decision-making processes in the assessment and management of LNPCPs. A modified Delphi consensus process was then used for voting on proposed parameters over multiple voting rounds with at least 80% agreement defined as consensus. The minimum dataset was used in a pilot process to ensure rigidity and usability. Results A 23-parameter minimum dataset with parameters relating to patient and lesion factors, including six parameters relating to image retrieval, was formulated over four rounds of voting with two pilot processes to test rigidity and usability. Conclusion This paper describes the development of the first reported evidence-based and expert consensus minimum dataset for the management of LNPCPs. It is anticipated that this dataset will allow comprehensive and standardized lesion assessment to improve decision-making in the assessment and management of LNPCPs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A biography of the late urologist Ronald Ogier Ward, the first president of the British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS) in the 1900s, is presented. Ward was born in London, England on March 6, 1886 to Allan Ogier Ward. He received his education at Magdalen College School and at Queen's College in Oxford, England. His military involvement during World War I in 1914 is highlighted. His contributions to the discussions on the Government White Paper on a National Health Service are cited.

This paper provides estimates for a comprehensive set of social benefits and costs associated with the federal Housing Choice Voucher ( Section 8) program. The impact categories for which we provide empirical estimates include the value of the voucher to recipients; additional services and public benefits induced by voucher receipt; improvements in children's health, education, and criminal behaviors; the costs of voucher provision; the labor supply impacts on voucher recipients; and community effects. These estimates rest largely on empirical analyses of the effect of voucher receipt on several recipient and taxpayer behaviors and outcomes that occur in the first year of voucher receipt. The analysis distinguishes benefits and costs accruing to program participants, nonparticipants-including taxpayers and property owners-and society as a whole. Due to the rise in foreclosure filings, policymakers are increasingly concerned with helping families in financial distress keep their homes. This paper tests the extent to which distressed mortgage borrowers benefit from three types of state foreclosure polices: (1) judicial foreclosure proceedings, (2) statutory rights of redemption, and (3) statewide foreclosure-prevention initiatives. Based on an analysis of borrowers in default who reside in 22 cross-state metropolitan statistical area pairs, state policies generally have weak effects. Both judicial foreclosure proceedings and foreclosure prevention initiatives are associated with modest increases in loan modification rates. Using a matching procedure, a lender's letter promoting mortgage default counseling was associated with increases in loan modifications, decreases in loan cures, and decreases in foreclosure starts. We have access to an unprecedented amount of fine-grained data on cities, transportation, economies, and societies, much of these data referenced in geo-space and time. There is a tremendous opportunity to discover new knowledge about spatial economies that can inform theory and modeling in regional science. However, there is little evidence of computational methods for discovering knowledge from databases in the regional science literature. This paper addresses this gap by clarifying the geospatial knowledge discovery process, its relation to scientific knowledge construction, and identifying challenges to a greater role in regional science. Australian mammals have suffered an exceptionally high rate of decline and extinction over the last two hundred years. Body mass is linked to extinction risk in Australian mammals, but the nature of this association is controversial. A widely held view is that species of intermediate body mass (between 35 and 5500 g, the ‘critical weight range’, CWR) have declined most severely. However, the existence of the CWR has been disputed. In this paper we clarify the relationship of decline status and body mass in Australian marsupials. We show that the form of this relationship differs for ground-living versus arboreal species, and for species from low versus high rainfall areas. Among ground-living species and those from low-rainfall areas, declines were strongly size-selective and concentrated on species within the CWR. For the remaining species, decline was only weakly related to body mass with no evidence of heightened risk for species of intermediate size. We conclude that for terrestrial species in low rainfall areas, species within the CWR are most at risk of decline and extinction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article presents an update on Policy Studies Organization (PSO) in the U.S. PSO holds concurrent meetings with the Southern Political Science Association (SPSA) in New Orleans, Louisiana every January, with the American Association for the Advancement of Science every February. PSO established and raises funds for three endowments that are held in permanent trust by the American, Midwest, and SPSA. It has also established the Walter E. Beach Fellows Endowment with the SPSA to enable foreign scholars to attend the annual meetings of the Southern.

This is the second in a series of four papers that look at the ways that minds and bodies of individuals are affected by severe stress and use that as a way of developing a deeper understanding of what happens to stressed individuals who come together to form stressed organizations and the impact of this stress on organizational leaders. The series will also explore the parallel process that occurs when traumatized individuals and stressed organizations come together to form stressed societies. Part I focused on the basic human stress response. In Part II, we will begin exploring the more extended impact of severe, chronic, and repetitive exposure to stress on the functioning of the emotional system, the ways in which human beings tend to adapt to adversity and thus come to normalize highly abnormal behaviour. Research suggests that there has been a sustained and incremental growth in Friends' organisations (also known as members hip schemes, societies and associations) in the UK since 1970. Despite this there is a dearth of published literature on the subject. This paper seeks to clarify the association between the intimacy and the magnitude of relational uncertainty generated by specific events within romantic relationships. More specifically, we suggest that episodic relational uncertainty peaks at moderate levels of intimacy. We conducted a cross–sectional study in which 328 romantic relationship participants reported their reactions to a hypothetical relational uncertainty increasing event. Although the effect size was small, findings documented a curvilinear association between intimacy and episodic relational uncertainty. Further, hierarchical regression results supported our predictions about the effects of intimacy and episodic relational uncertainty on people’s reactions to the events. We discuss the implications of our findings for understanding the roles of both intimacy and episodic relational uncertainty within romantic relationships. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper addresses the impact of class position on collective action by comparing workers' and business' associational organizability. Hypotheses on this are derived from class theory, collective action theory and organization theory. When examining them via a crossnational comparison of labor unions and business interest associations, class-specific differences arise: a higher organizability accrues to business interest associations in terms of the ability to recruit members, but to unions in terms of internalizing interests and making members comply. No theory's hypotheses are completely consistent with these findings. Their shortcomings are discussed, and a revised theoretical approach is developed. This article presents the highlights of the International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (ISPCAN) Ninth International Congress, held in Chicago, Illinois from August 30 to September 2, 1992. The congress theme was An International Commitment to Prevent Child Abuse. The host organization was the National Committee for Prevention of Child Abuse based in Chicago. The congress had over 1700 participants from nearly 80 different countries including over 40 developing countries. A majority of participants were from outside the U.S. and for many this was their first experience of an international congress. Rather than attempt to summarize the contents of a congress than in addition to plenary sessions included over 450 papers, a masterclass, research briefings, discussion groups, an exhibition, theatrical productions and social events, three individuals share with us some of their impressions of Chicago 1992. The ISPCAN 9th International Congress was preceded by a Pre-Congress Seminar which was held on the four days prior to the congress. About 100 participants attended at the University of Chicago's campus.

This paper compares the perceptions of county agricultural committee members with those of county extension agents as to general objectives and specific roles of county extension workers in thirty Wisconsin counties. County committee members tend to view the agents more as "generalists" and as persons performing services for groups and associations in the county than do the agents themselves. The ordering of types of activities on the basis of importance in "getting the job done" by committee members tends to agree more with the ordering by agricultural agents than by home agents or 4-H Club agents. County agricultural committee members tend to define the roles of county extension workers in terms of local needs and interests rather than in terms of sectional, state, or national problems.
