To examine the effect of the snow‐albedo feedback (SAF) on the current surface climate across terrestrial regions at mid–high latitudes, we perform a series of idealized sensitivity experiments using an atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM), in which the snow albedo is assumed to be considerably smaller than that in the control experiment. When the snow albedo is reduced, the fall and spring surface air temperatures (SATs) in northern Eurasia are considerably higher than those in the control experiment. Particularly, the spring SAT at terrestrial high latitudes rises by more than 10°C, due to low snow albedo. Despite the small surface snow albedo during both fall and spring, the fall temperature difference between the two experiments is smaller than that during spring. The feedback with the hydrological effect, which accelerates snowmelt, is either nonexistent or weak during periods of seasonally low air temperatures. This result indicates that the hydrological effect significantly influences the SAF, and different magnitudes of the hydrological effect including cloud differences are a possible source of SAF uncertainty between models. The radiative albedo effect also impacts the evolution of the snow area in central Asia and eastern Europe through changes in lateral water vapour transport. Furthermore, the experiments indicate that the cooling effect of snow on land is necessary for the strength of the Siberian High and the pattern of Arctic Oscillation, suggesting that snow cover may also significantly extend the duration of Arctic Oscillation effects. This study investigates the role of internal climate variability on the wintertime surface air temperature (SAT) trend over Eurasia during 1970–2004 based on outputs from the Community Earth System Model Large Ensemble Project. The SAT trends vary significantly in both spatial pattern and magnitude among ensemble members, indicating the essential role of internal climate variability on SAT trends. The leading modes of the spread of SAT trends are extracted via inter‐member empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis of the SAT trend patterns among 40 ensemble members. The first EOF mode shows widespread warming over northern Eurasia and slight cooling southward of 40°N during its positive phase. The second EOF mode displays a zonal dipole, with one center located in Europe and the other of the opposite sign over Siberia. The Arctic Oscillation and Scandinavian patterns are key dynamical factors associated with the two dominant modes, respectively. A dynamical adjustment method is further employed to decompose the internal climate variability into those related to large‐scale atmospheric circulation and residuals. The spread of SAT trends among ensemble members is primarily associated with the various large‐scale atmospheric circulation and second by the residual component that is closely tied to diverse snow cover trends over Eurasia, especially over northern Eurasia. These results may help understand the relationship between internal climate variability and winter SAT trends over Eurasia via dynamical and thermodynamical processes. Large‐scale cold and warm spells successively attacked North Asia (NA) and resulted in a subseasonal alternation of extreme surface air temperature (SAT) before and after 15 January 2021. Our results show the synergistic effect of annual cycle and intraseasonal oscillation component (AC and ISO) of SAT and circulation anomalies caused temperature extremes. Before 15 January 2021, an eastward‐propagating Rossby wave train strengthened the cold circulation regime with an enhanced Ural blocking high (UBH) and surface Siberian high (SH). Circulation anomalies of the negative ISO were superimposed on the counterpart of AC, which easily resulted in cold extremes via nonlinear interaction of meridional temperature gradient. After mid‐January 2021, however, weakened UBH and SH caused warm advection and spells over NA. This synergistic effect of AC and ISO anomalies in SAT accounted for most historical temperature extremes, implying that AC anomalies have important indications for subseasonal alternation of temperature extremes. The negative (positive) anomalies of AC (denoted PACN (PACP)) are characterized by enhanced (weakened) Ural blocking high (UBH) and Siberian high (SH), corresponding to cold (warm) NA circulation regimes before (after) 15 January 2021. During PACN (negative anomalies of ISO, PISON), a quasi‐barotropic Rossby wave train in the midlatitudes of Eurasia enhanced AC (ISO) of the UBH and SH, causing cold extremes in NA. While during the PACP and positive anomalies of ISO (PISOP), circulation anomalies like negative Arctic oscillation (AO) weakened UBH and SH, jointly resulting in warm extremes in NA. The subseasonal temperature change process in NA was mainly attributed to the conveyance of AC anomalies of meridional temperature gradient by subseasonal winds. Historical temperature extremes were almost attributed to the synergistic effect of AC and ISO of SAT anomalies, implying that the AC anomalies have important indications for subseasonal alternation of cold and warm extremes. The western Pacific pattern (WP), characterized by a meridional dipole structure in geopotential height anomalies centred at approximately 50°N over the North Pacific, is one of the most prominent teleconnection patterns over the Northern Hemisphere (NH) in boreal winter. Several methods to identify the WP exist in the literature. Based on eight WP indices defined by different methods, this study analyses their dominant frequencies, spatial structures, climatic impacts, and relations to the Arctic Oscillation (AO) and El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO). The correlation coefficients of the eight WP indices show a considerable spread, but most of them are statistically significant. Most of the WPIs capture a pronounced power peak at approximately 5 years. The meridional dipole structure of the WP can be captured by all the WPIs, but it shows a large spread in the location of the centre. Several WPIs are significantly correlated with the winter AO, with marked signals of atmospheric anomalies over the Arctic region. The connections of the WP with the simultaneous winter ENSO depend largely on their definitions. The impacts of the WP on the surface air temperature over many parts of Eurasia and North America are also sensitive to its definition. Global temperature change is strongly affected by internal climate variability (ICV). The temporal change of the ICV on the decadal to multi‐decadal scales is referred as the decadal modulated oscillation (DMO) that plays a dominated role in the occurrence of enhanced warming and warming hiatus. However, investigation on the DMO in modern historical period has received limited attention. In this study, the ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) method was applied to the surface air temperature (SAT) during the boreal cold season to extract the DMO signal in the past century. Two most sensitive areas of DMO trend over northern Eurasia and northwestern North America were identified and used to build a time series of regionally enhanced DMO. It showed an obvious decadal periodic oscillation at 11–23 years and exhibited increasing amplitude. In addition, regression analysis using Niño3.4, Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), Atlantic Multi‐decadal Oscillation (AMO), and Arctic Oscillation (AO) revealed a major role of the AO in DMO over the mid‐to‐high latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere (NH). However, such strong oscillation signal has not been detected in most of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) models, and the extracted regionally enhanced DMO are capable of improving the predictability of SAT over the mid‐to‐high latitudes in the NH. Eurasia is one of the most sensitive areas to climate change in the world. Its western and eastern coasts are very likely to exhibit different temperature and precipitation variations in response to the global climate change. By using precipitation (PRCP), maximum temperature (Tmax), minimum temperature (Tmin), and daily temperature range (DTR) data from 333 meteorological stations in Western (WE) and Eastern Eurasia (EE), we quantitatively compared spatio‐temporal changes on both the seasonal and annual scales from 1961 to 2012. Results showed that PRCP mainly exhibited increasing trends in northern WE and decreasing trends in southern WE, whereas PRCP in EE recorded an increase–decrease–increase trend from high to low latitudes. The increase of annual PRCP in WE was higher than that in EE. On the seasonal scale, the PRCP in WE recorded an opposite trend from EE. Tmax and Tmin significantly increased for almost all stations on the annual and seasonal scales, especially during the winter. Nevertheless, the increase of Tmin was higher than that of Tmax in EE, resulting in a decreased DTR on both the seasonal and annual scales. An reverse trend of DTR was detected in WE. Our results concluded that the Arctic Oscillation was the major large‐scale atmospheric circulation affecting the trends of PRCP (negative correlation) and temperature (positive correlation) over WE and EE, and it might play an important role in future climate change. In the present paper, the linkage between the predominant modes of boreal winter surface air temperature (SAT) anomalies over Eurasia and the preceding autumnal Eurasian snow cover is investigated for the period of 1979–2014. The first leading winter Eurasian SAT mode exhibits a strong signal over the region northward from 40°N; in association with this SAT mode, a significant zonal dipole pattern in snow cover can be observed in the midlatitude Eurasia during November. Such anomalous November snow cover strengthens the wave activity flux upward propagating over the middle latitudes, which can change the stratospheric polar vortex thereafter. In the following winter, the anomalous polar vortex signal propagates downward to the surface and gives rise to the negative Arctic Oscillation‐like structure. Consequently, this leads to the winter SAT anomalies occupying the area north of 40°N. The second leading winter Eurasian SAT mode shows negative values northward from 60°N as well as positive over the middle latitudes of Eurasia; in association with the second SAT mode, the significant anomalous snow cover appears to the east of the Ural Mountains during October. Such an anomalous snow signal can persist from October until the subsequent winter and produce a wave‐like structure with a southeastward propagation from the Ural Mountains to the midlatitude Eurasia in the midtroposphere and upper troposphere, which results in the dipole anomalous temperatures lying in the middle to high latitudes of Eurasia. The preceding autumn snow cover signal is valuable for the prediction of the winter SAT over the Eurasian continent.
