The Kelameili Ocean was one branch of the Palaeo‐Asian Ocean, the initiation and closure history of which remains elusive. Consequently, they hamper our understanding of the accretionary evolution of the southern Altaids. In this paper, we carried out field mapping and also geochronological and geochemical analyses on the Huangcaopo Group in the northern Harlik Mountains, NW China. Field investigation revealed that "block‐in‐matrix" structure develops with blocks of andesite, limestone, sandstone, and gabbro in matrices of turbidites. Combined with our recent work, our field investigation indicates that the Huangcaopo Group is the southern extension of the Kelameili accretionary complex. A gabbro block (19HAM057) was dated at 500 ± 4 Ma, its geochemical affinity was defined to be similar to arc magmatic rocks. Magmatisms represented by two gabbroic intrusions (19HAM057‐2 and 19HAM048) were dated at the latest Devonian (360 ± 5 Ma) and the latest Carboniferous (299 ± 4 Ma), respectively. Their geochemistry displays enrichments in light rare earth elements (LREE) and large ion lithophile elements (LILE), but depletions in high field strength elements (HFSE, especially Nb and Ta). And a younger gabbroic intrusion (19HAM052) yielded crystallization age of the latest Permian (254 ± 3 Ma), and its geochemistry also shows affinity to arc magmatism. The magmatism represented by the gabbro block (19HAM057) was coeval with the Zhaheba‐Aermantai ophiolite, indicating that it was the product of incipient arc magmatism following subduction initiation in the Kelameili branch of the Palaeo‐Asian Ocean. However, two episodes of gabbroic magmas (19HAM057‐2 and 19HAM048) that intruded the Kelameili accretionary complex from the latest Devonian to latest Carboniferous indicate southward rollback of the subducting Kelameili oceanic lithosphere and resulted in the development of a growing arc. Meanwhile, the youngest gabbroic intrusion (19HAM052) suggests that northward subduction of the Kelameili oceanic lithosphere may have at least lasted to the latest Permian, indicating that the closure of the Kelameili Ocean might have been later than the latest Permian, most likely in the early Triassic. Our new data provide further constraints on the initiation and closure history of the Kelameili Ocean, which shed light on the accretionary evolution of the Altaids. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Significant sedimentary and tectonic information is preserved in the geochemical characteristics of the Middle Triassic Zhifang Formation in the southern Ordos Basin, North China. In this paper, elemental geochemical analysis is performed for 12 mudstone and siltstone samples from the Zhifang Formation of the Liangzhai River–Liulinchuan section of Tongchuan City, Shaanxi Province, with a major element analysis performed via X‐ray fluorescence spectrometry, trace element and rare earth element (REE) analyses performed via inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP‐MS). The palaeoenvironment and tectonic backgrounds of the study section are also studied by analyzing the elements and elemental ratios sensitive to palaeoenvironmental conditions. The geochemical proxies, including the concentrations of U, and ratios of Fe2O3/FeO, U/Th, V/(V + Ni), V/Cr, and Ni/Co indicate that the depositional environment of the Zhifang Formation was likely an oxic–dysoxic condition without strong lake‐water stratification. The oxic–dysoxic condition is interpreted as one of the key controlling factors for the poor development of source rocks in the Zhifang Formation, although this formation is dominated by black fine‐grained sediments. Because of the Qinling orogenic belt, the geochemical characteristics reflect a tectonic background of the provenance area that was an active continental margin related to the continental island arc. The Late Palaeozoic Solonker‐Xar Moron‐Changchun‐Yanji Suture (SXCYS) is considered to mark the location of the final closure of the Paleo‐Asian Ocean, which separated the North China Craton to the south and the amalgamated blocks to the north in Northeast China. There has always been controversy about its eastern extension in Northeast China and the final closure time of the Paleo‐Asian Ocean. To explore this issue, we collected gabbro and quartz‐diorite samples in the Hunchun area for the genesis of mafic magma and age dating, and five groups of Permian to Triassic sandstones belonging to both sides of the potential suture locations in the middle and east Jilin Province for the provenance analysis to discuss the final closure time of the Paleo‐Asian Ocean and the possible positions of the eastward termination of the SXCYS. The gabbro reveals a Middle Permian concordia average age of 266.9 ± 5.2 Ma, and the quartz diorite reveals a Late Permian Concordia average age of 258.8 ± 4.8 Ma. Lithological and geochemical analysis reveal the two rock samples belong to low‐K arc tholeiites from the oceanic island and calk‐alkaline volcanics from the active continental margin, respectively, which implies that during the middle to late Permian, the SW margin of the Jiamusi–Khanka Block (JB) continuously experienced the subduction process from the Paleo‐Asian Ocean Plate. The final closure time of the Paleo‐Asian Ocean should be later than the Late Permian. Meanwhile, four groups of sandstone from the east Jilin reveal typically Jiamusi–Mongolia Block (JMB) provenance features, with age components of ~500 Ma, ~0.9–1.5 Ga implying that the Wangqing, Hunchun, Kaishantun area belongs to the northern part of the SXCYS from late Early Permian to Middle Triassic, with youngest age components of 288.2 ± 2.8, 275.5 ± 1.8, 250 ± 1.7, and 244.9 ± 1.7 Ma, respectively. The late Early Permian sandstone from the middle Jilin reveals the youngest age component of 273.8 ± 3.4 Ma and the age component of 487 ± 3 Ma also revealing JMB feature. Comparing to previous studies, we propose that the Paleo‐Asian Ocean finally closed during Middle to Late Triassic. A possible ENE fault separates the eastern extension of SXCYS into two parts, which means the possible position of the eastward extension of the SXCYS should go along the Wangqing‐Kaishantun with NNW direction in the west, Hunchun‐Laoheishan with NW direction in the east. Recent studies highlight the debates about the role of the northwestern China blocks, for example, north Tarim block, south Tarim block (STB), Altyn Tagh block (ATB) and Qaidam‐Qilian block (QQB) during the assembly of Rodinia. We herein present a combined paleomagnetic, geochronological, and geochemical study on 16 mafic dikes in the northern ATB. After removing a recent viscous remanent magnetization, three characteristic remanent magnetization components (CHs) were isolated. CH1 was identified in eight NW‐trending diabase dikes, one of which was newly dated at 895.3 ± 7.7 Ma through use of SHRIMP baddeleyite U‐Pb methodology. It yields a mean direction (D/I) of 123.3°/−42.2° (α95 = 12.1°). The paleopole (40.9°S/184.6°E, A95 = 11.7°) was calculated by averaging eight virtual geomagnetic poles (VGPs) from each dike. A partial baked‐contact test supports the primary origin of CH1. CH2 was isolated from three E‐W trending diabase dikes, pointing northwest with considerably shallower downward inclinations. CH3 was obtained from five lamprophyre dikes, directing southeast with moderate to shallow upward inclinations. However, the VGPs of either CH2 or CH3 are insufficient to average a precise mean pole. Geochemical analyses also reveal petrogenetic discrepancy among the dikes with distinct CHs. Combining the new ∼895 Ma pole of CH1 with the global paleomagnetic database and being aided by geological evidence, we propose that the STB‐ATB‐QQB and the north China craton were located along the northwestern side of Laurentia in Rodinia at ∼895 Ma, and suggest the connection might have been intact until ∼780 Ma. Plain Language Summary: The paleogeographic positions of the northwestern China blocks, including the north Tarim block, the south Tarim block, the Altyn Tagh block (ATB) and the Qaidam‐Qilian block in the Rodinia supercontinent, remain enigmatic and highly controversial. Glasses cooled from impact melt and vapor are a common component in lunar regolith, carrying important information about protolith composition, regolith formation, and impact flux on the Moon. Interpretations, however, are frequently challenged due to widespread ambiguity in determining their provenances. Regolith samples returned by China's Chang'E‐5 mission provide a unique opportunity to study the microscopic mechanism of regolith reworking on the Moon, because as evidenced by the coherent radioisotope ages and petrographic characteristics of basaltic clasts in the regolith, the Chang'E‐5 regolith was mainly evolved from local mare materials, containing minor exotic components. Here, we report 153 glass particles larger than 20 μm in diameters that were screened from 500 mg of Chang'E‐5 regolith. Most glass particles have rotational shapes and contain structural and/or compositional heterogeneities in interiors, and geochemical analyses reveal a dominant origin as impact melt of local mare materials. Surfaces of the impact glasses are observed to have abundant protruded and dented microstructures, which are classified as different groups based on their morphology and geochemistry. Similar microstructures were observed on impact spherules collected by the Apollo and Luna missions, but those on the Chang'E‐5 impact glasses were formed without substantial involvement of exotic ejecta. Microstructures such as silicate melt pancakes that frequently exhibit flow spikes at margins, nano‐phase iron‐rich mounds that are arranged with semi‐equidistant spaces in curves and patches, spatially clustered microcraters that are indicative of secondary impacts, and blunt linear scratches with terminal particles all suggest that regolith reworking mainly occurred among local materials at low speeds. Plain Language Summary: Regolith particles on the Moon exhibit an abundance of small‐scale surface texture or microstructures that were formed during regolith reworking. Lunar impact glasses are mainly melted from surface regolith, and microstructures on their surfaces record the history of subsequent regolith reworking. The possible contribution of exotic ejecta in regolith gardening is an interesting topic in lunar science. However, resolving this issue has been a persistent difficulty by both remote observations and sample analyses. China's Chang'E‐5 mission returned regolith samples from one of the youngest mare units on the Moon, and earlier sample analyses revealed little exotic components. In 500 mg of Chang'E‐5 regolith, we handpicked 153 glass particles that are larger than 20 μm. Most of the particles are heterogeneous impact glasses that contain voids and unmelted fragments, and geochemical analyses showed that the remaining structurally homogeneous particles were also impact glasses formed from local regolith. Based on high‐resolution microscopic imaging and elemental mapping, we recognized and classified the abundant protruded and dented microstructures on the glass particles. Morphology and crosscutting relationship of the microstructures suggest that they were mostly formed during regolith reworking by low‐speed events of local materials that had various thermophysical states (vapor, melt, and solid). The present investigation is the first to provide information on the formation, process and influence factors for hydrocarbon generation and expulsion potential of the Cuizhuang Formation source rock in the Yuncheng sub‐basin to decipher the reason why no commercial petroleum resources have been found so far. In this study, data from the Jitan‐1 well in the Yuncheng sub‐basin were applied for the Cuizhuang Formation source rock basin modelling and organic geochemical analyses to reconstruct the burial and thermal evolution history and reveal the timing and process of hydrocarbon generation and expulsion. The modelling results indicate that the peak palaeotemperature of the Cuizhuang Formation source rock reached ~205°C in the Middle Carboniferous (~327 Ma) at a maximum burial depth of ~4000 m, when rapid burial subsidence and thermal events played a significant role in increasing thermal maturity. The Cuizhuang Formation generated and expelled small amounts of hydrocarbons from the Early Ordovician until the Middle Carboniferous, starting with the primary kerogen cracking and conversion to oil from the Early to Middle Ordovician (~476–461 Ma), corresponding to the thermal maturity values of 0.55–0.70 %VRo and transformation ratio (TR) <10%. The expulsion of most generated oil (0.70–1.30 %VRo, TR of 10%–90%) started from the Middle Ordovician to the Early Carboniferous (~461–351 Ma), before reaching the secondary cracking of the retained oil into gas (>1.30 %VRo and TR of 90%–100%) from the Early to Middle Carboniferous (~351–327 Ma). Destruction of the initial formation of hydrocarbon reservoirs in the Yuncheng sub‐basin was primarily controlled by the Middle Carboniferous tectonic event with its major uplift‐erosion, resulting in the absence of potential hydrocarbon reservoirs in recent exploration activities in some parts of the Yuncheng sub‐basin. Lateral particle transport in shelf/slope settings of marginal sea systems may potentially supply allochthonous particulate organic carbon (POC) to the ocean interior. The magnitude and prevalence of such processes has implications for our understanding of the functioning and efficiency of modern biological carbon pump processes, as well as for interpretation of deep ocean sediment records. Yet, ages and relative contribution of POC from different sources to deep ocean basins are much less understood. Here, based on radiocarbon (Fm, fraction modern), stable carbon (δ13Corg), and other geochemical analysis of particles intercepted by time‐series sediment traps deployed at three different depths (1,000, 2,150, and 3,200 m), we constrain the source of the sinking POC in the deep basin of northern South China Sea (SCS). The results show that the modern POC derived from surface ocean productivity, acting as the vertical vector, accounts for 87% ± 4% of sinking POC on average, while the lateral vector (aged POC hosted on resuspended sediment) comprises the remainder (13%). The contribution of laterally supplied POC increases with depth and is composed of aged POC derived from several sources. The majority stems from sediment resuspension of the northeastern SCS slope, that entrains aged marine POC (dominant), fossil OC, and soil OC (least significant). The diminished proportion of fossil OC in deep basin sinking POC relative to Taiwan‐proximal areas is likely due to its dispersion via resuspension–deposition loops and dilution by POC stemming from modern surface ocean productivity during the delivery. Plain Language Summary: Quantification of fresh and aged sinking particulate organic carbon (POC) and their vertical and lateral transfer in the marginal sea systems is crucial to budget the global carbon cycle. The South China Sea (SCS) is one of the largest marginal seas in the world, the ages, and relative contribution of POC from different sources to deep basins are poorly constrained. In this study, we provide a first assessment on the age and source of sinking POC in the deep northern SCS basin based on radiocarbon (Fm), stable carbon (δ13Corg), and other geochemical parameters. The results show that 87% ± 4% of sinking POC in the deep basin (1,000–3200 m) derives from modern surface ocean productivity via vertical export. The aged POC supplied via lateral transport has minimal impact on the fluxes and temporal dynamics of the sinking POC. However, the contribution of laterally supplied POC increases with depth and is composed of aged POC derived from several sources: aged marine POC, fossil OC, and soil OC. The importance of laterally supplied POC and complexity of aged POC sources increase with depth, underlining the importance of considering sedimentary OC resuspension and dispersion in bathypelagic and sedimentary records of these dynamic marginal sea systems. The Middle‒Late Mesozoic massive volcanism formed a considerable thickness of volcanic‐sedimentary strata in western Liaoning, northern China. Concomitantly, it elevated phosphorus (P) availability for the rapid bloom of the terrestrial Yanliao and Jehol biotas, which developed highly abundant biodiversity and biomass. Hence, systematic tectonic and geochemical analyses of these volcanic‐sedimentary sequences with a significant P fluctuation would advance our understanding of the coevolutionary relationship between terrestrial biotas and regional tectonics. Here, we show that the secular variation of P availability in the Mesozoic volcanic rocks were the immediate results of the changes in volcanic intensity and lithospheric thickness controlled by the geological background of the cratonic destruction resulting from the paleo‐Pacific plate subduction. This study reveals the constraint effect of regional tectonics on the evolution of terrestrial ecosystems through the volcanism and P cycle. Plain Language Summary: The phosphorus (P) is necessary for biotas and mainly comes from volcanics in areas dominated by volcanism closely related to deep‐Earth processes. Thus, the origin of P changes in volcanics can provide key evidence for the intrinsic relations between deep processes and biota evolution. Here, we present tectonic and geochemical analyses for the Mesozoic fossil‐bearing volcanic‐sedimentary strata in northern China. The westward subduction of the paleo‐Pacific plate triggered the crustal thickening and subsequent lithospheric thinning of the East Asia continent. These dynamic processes controlled the volcanic intensity and P variation, resulting in remarkable changes in P availability that led to the rise and fall of terrestrial biotas. Hence, P variations in volcanic sequences reveal the linkage between regional tectonics and biota evolution. This study represents an effort to explore how tectonic processes constrained terrestrial biotas involving multidisciplinary methods. The Honggang member of the early Paleogene Buxin Formation is the main source rock in the Sanshui Basin, characterized by organic-rich black shales with the cyclic recurrence of organic-poor sediments. The geochemical characteristics of the Honggang member have been documented to determine the organic matter types and depositional environments in this paper. The organic matter of the black shales mainly consists of a mixture of land plant-derived and phytoplankton-derived organic matter. Total organic carbon content (TOC)-sulfur-iron (Fe) relationships suggest that the organic-rich black shales were deposited under dysoxic-to-euxinic water conditions. The time that iron minerals remained in contact with H2S in anoxic waters possibly influenced the formation of syngenetic pyrite, and organic carbon controlled the formation of diagenetic pyrite. Organic-poor intervals usually show pyrite sulfur enrichment and higher degree of pyritization values relative to low organic carbon contents. This resulted from HS− diffusing downward from overlying organic-rich sediments and formed Fe sulfides through reactions with sufficient Fe. Trace elements generally exhibit low concentrations and little TOC dependence, suggesting some degree of depletion in these elements in the early Paleogene sediments of the Sanshui Basin. This probably resulted from cyclic recurrences of oxic benthic conditions, which promoted the remobilization of trace elements and caused the low concentration of trace elements. The geochemical differences of magmatic rocks can be influenced by melt source and magmatic processes, including partial melting, fractional crystallization and magma mixing. New whole‐rock geochemical analyses, zircon U–Pb ages and Hf‐isotope data on granitoids from the Qingshanbao complex in the Longshoushan belt highlight a significant Late Ordovician–Early Silurian magmatic episode during the collision between the Alxa and Qilian‐Qaidam blocks, in which magma mixing was a fundamental process. The Qingshanbao complex comprises K‐feldspar granite, granodiorite and diorite emplaced coevally from 442 to 433 Ma. They exhibit peraluminous to metaluminous I‐type features, are enriched in large‐ion lithophile elements (LILEs) and light rare earth elements (LREEs) and depleted in high‐field‐strength elements (HFSEs). Chondrite‐normalized REE patterns are fractionated (LaN/YbN = 10.2–34.9) with weakly negative Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu* = 0.66–0.94). The 176Lu/177Hf zircon two‐stage model ages (TDM2) and the εHf(t) on zircons extracted from the K‐feldspar granite (1613–2,316 Ma, εHf(t) = −14.4 to −3.0) and granodiorite (1640–2015 Ma, εHf(t) = −9.6 to −3.6) suggest they were formed by the mixing of melts produced by the melting of Mesoproterozoic crustal materials, most likely meta‐basic rocks from the Longshoushan Group, and to a lesser extent mantle materials. In contrast, zircons in the diorite yield TDM2 ages ranging from 964 to 1767 Ma and εHf(t) values of −5.5 to 7.1, implying melting of depleted mantle rocks with subordinate participation of lower crust materials. We suggest that the Qingshanbao complex was emplaced when the North Qilian area was in a transitional stage from a compressional to an extensional environment as early as approximately 442 Ma. The article presents a study on geochemical identification of molybdenum copper (Mo-Cu) and copper-molybdenum (Cu-Mo) bearing granitoids in China and their significance. Topics discussed include two types Mo intrusions (Mo-Cu and Cu-Mo) based on whole-rock geochemical characteristics, analysis of geochemical comparisons between the Mo-Cu and Cu-Mo bearing intrusions, and analysis showing higher silicon dioxide (SiO2) contents exhibited by Mo-Cu bearing intrusions.

Volcanism represented by the Permian–Triassic boundary (PTB) volcanic ash beds in South China plays a vital role in the PTB mass extinction. However, the probable provenance of the PTB volcanic ashes has not been exactly identified until now. In this study, the geochemical analysis was conducted on newly found five volcanic ash beds from the Mao'ershan and Tielukou sections in the northern part of the Yangtze platform. Volcanic ashes geochemistry indicates a felsic nature and negative Eu anomalies. Zircons selected from the five ash beds yield LA‐ICP‐MS U–Pb ages varying from ca. 255 to 248 Ma, and εHf(t) values of −8.6 to 1.1, which indicates the earlier stage volcanic ash beds in Mao'ershan are likely derived from mantle material and partial melting of crustal rocks, and the later stage volcanic ash beds in Tielukou are derived largely from ancient crustal rocks. Combined with previous U–Pb ages, εHf(t) values, trace elements of zircons, and geological setting, the PTB volcanic ash beds probably drift from the Jomda–Weixi volcanic belt in Sanjiang region of SE Asia, and that are represented by the volcanic rocks in Misha regions, eastern margin of the Lanping Basin. New data and discussion on the provenance of the PTB volcanic ashes provide important implications for the trigger of PTB mass extinction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Instrumental data indicate the occurrence of a dipolar pattern of precipitation anomalies between north China and the Yangtze River Valley (YRV), which was termed "northern drought (flood)—southern flood (drought)" scenario. It has been shown that this pattern occurred during the Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA) and the Little Ice Age (LIA). However, there are questions about whether this dipolar pattern also occurred during the entire Holocene, and the mechanism responsible. Addressing these questions is of fundamental importance for understanding the spatiotemporal evolution of precipitation in East Asian summer monsoon region. Numerous studies of north China have demonstrated that the mid‐Holocene was humid, and the early and late Holocene were dry. However, there are relatively few equivalent studies in the YRV. To this end, we conducted detailed geochemical analysis of an AMS 14C‐dated sediment core from Lake Nanyi in the YRV. Our results indicate humid periods at Lake Nanyi occurred during 11.5–8.0 ka and from 2.0 ka to the present, while dry conditions occurred during ~8.0–2.0 ka. These results, together with published records from Dajiuhu peatland and Heshang Cave, collectively indicate in the YRV, the mid‐Holocene (~8.0–3.0 ka) was dry, while the early and late Holocene were humid, which is the inverse of the pattern in north China. Thus, we conclude there was an asynchronous evolution of hydroclimatic changes between north China and the YRV during the Holocene. We interpret this dipolar pattern as the result of ENSO variations: in a La Niña‐like state, the Western Pacific Subtropical High retreated northeastward, which would enable the rainfall belt to move northward and result in increased (decreased) precipitation in north China (the YRV). Sea surface temperature records from the Pacific Ocean and model simulations support this mechanism: a La Niña‐like state in the mid‐Holocene resulted in more (less) precipitation in north China (the YRV). Significant progress in tight oil exploration has been reported in the second member of the Qiketai Formation (J2q2) in the Shengbei area of the Turpan–Hami Basin. Geochemical analyses were conducted to assess the quality of the J2q2 source rocks. The improved hydrocarbon generation potential method was utilized to quantify the hydrocarbon generation and expulsion features of the source rocks. The results showed that J2q2 source rocks were deposited in a reduced lacustrine setting with a high palaeoproductivity. The J2q2 source rocks are widely distributed (approximately 1,000 km2) and have a thickness that varies from 50 to 130 m. Moreover, they can be identified as a set of high‐quality source rocks (thermally mature rocks with Ro values >0.5%, consisting mainly of types I and II kerogen and possessing an average total organic carbon content of 2.68%). The oil–source correlation results reveal that the source of crude oil in the studied area is J2q2. The improved hydrocarbon generation potential method is established for different kerogen types to limit the influence of the kerogen type on the calculation. The hydrocarbon expulsion threshold of the type I model is located at Ro = 0.6%. The type II kerogen rocks have different characteristics, and the hydrocarbon expulsion threshold is located at Ro = 0.62%. The maximum hydrocarbon generation and expulsion intensities are 700 × 104 t/km2 and 400 × 104 t/km2, respectively. The hydrocarbon generation and expulsion amount of the J2q2 source rocks are 21.4 × 108 t and 12.3 × 108 t, respectively. The tight oil potential of the J2q2 tight oil in the Shengbei area is 4.09 × 108 t. The SB10 and SB6 well areas are favourable J2q2 tight oil exploration areas in the Shengbei area. The Ayishan Group in the Lajishan area is sandwiched between the South Qilian Belt and the Qilian Block, which is transitionally interpreted to represent the products of the post‐collision setting or the continental marginal arc during the Early Ordovician or Silurian and is associated with the evolution of the Proto‐Tethyan Ocean. While the detailed information about the age, geochemistry, and tectonic setting of the Ayishan Group is lacking, our geological mapping and analyses demonstrates that the Ayishan Group consists of andesites, rhyolites, ignimbrites, sandstones, and conglomerates, which unconformably overlies the Cambrian–Ordovician arc‐ophiolite complex. Zircon U–Pb dating of the rhyolites demonstrated that the Ayishan Group formed between 447 and 442 Ma and is Late Ordovician. Geochemical analyses demonstrated that rhyolites have high and variable SiO2 contents of 69.6–76.5 wt% and an aluminium saturation index (A/CNK) of 0.85–1.45, belonging to calc‐alkaline to high K calc‐alkaline series. They are subdivided into two subtypes of high‐Sr/Y rhyolites (HSRs) and normal rhyolites (NRs) based on the geochemical characteristics. The HSRs show lower total rare earth elements (34.77–62.78 ppm), lower Yb (0.19–0.21 ppm) and Y (1.77–1.99 ppm) contents, and relatively higher Sr contents (159–193 ppm), compared with NRs, and with positive Eu anomalies. Both subtypes exhibit extremely high whole‐rock δ18O values of 12.63–13.21‰, but various initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios and εNd(t) values, indicating a dominant origin of terrigenous sediments and the HSRs exhibit a more terrestrial composition than the NRs. Various magma sources further caused the assorted residual phase leading to the different geochemistry between the HSRs and the NRs. Combined with the previous data, these results imply that the rhyolites of the Ayishan Group were produced in the process of the amalgamation of the Qilian Block with the Qaidam Block during the Late Ordovician, which further indicated that the Proto‐Tethyan Ocean closed 450 Ma ago. Eastern Shandong is one of the most economically important regions for ore‐producing sedimentary‐metamorphic graphite deposits in China. The Liugezhuang and Daliangzikou graphite deposits in the Pingdu–Laixi Graphite Belt are typical examples. The ores in the Liugezhuang deposit and Daliangzikou deposit are typically gneiss/granulite type and biotite granulite type, respectively. Graphite occurs as stratabound layers of slender flakes associated with biotite, clinopyroxene, and plagioclase and as slender flakes and disseminated grains associated with biotite and filling tiny fractures in mineral grains. The mineral associations indicate that the ore rocks can be classified into four metamorphic facies: (a) amphibolite granulite facies, Cpx (Hy) + Opx (Di) + Pl ± Hbl ± Qz; (b) amphibolite facies, Hbl + Pl + Cpx (Opm) + Ep + Bt + Ms + Qz ± Chl ± Mic; (c) high‐grade greenshist facies, Hbl + Pl + Ep + Bt + Chl + Qz ± Cpx; and (d) low‐grade greenshist facies, Ep + Chl + Pl + Bt + Ms + Chl + Qz + Rt. Study of the variation in graphite crystals and fixed carbon with increasing metamorphic grade suggests that more than one metamorphism process (graphitization) occurred during ore formation. Geochemical analysis indicates that the primary condition under which the Liugezhuang and Daliangzikou graphite deposits formed was a marine facies sedimentary environment of which the material source was terrestrial weathering detritus and compounds and also a participation of terrestrial material in the graphite deposits. Trace element data suggest that the sedimentary condition was from a reducing condition in the Liugezhuang graphite deposit to a weaker reducing condition in the Daliangzikou graphite deposit, whereas samples from a Jingshan Group stratum show multiple oxidation–reduction conditions but dominantly oxidation. Carbon isotope analysis indicates that the carbon source of the Liugezhuang graphite deposit was organic, whereas that of the Daliangzikou graphite deposit was mainly organic carbon but with some inorganic participation. The nature of the Precambrian basement in the Cathaysia Block of South China is controversial, which inhibits our understanding of the pre‐Devonian tectonic evolution of the region. In this study, a suite of amphibolites and marbles in northern Fujian area located in the north of the Cathaysia Block were subjected to LA–ICP–MS U–Pb zircon geochronological and geochemical analyses. Results show that the protolith of the amphibolite formed after ca. 459 Ma, and its metamorphism happened at ca. 429 Ma. The protolith of the marble was deposited after ca. 518 Ma, and its metamorphic age is ca. 437 Ma. The amphibolites are divided into two groups based on geochemical data. Group 1 has an OIB‐like feature that might have formed in an environment characterized by oceanic islands and seamounts. Magmas associated with Group 1 were derived from an enriched mantle source with OIB characteristics. The protolith of Group 2 shows IAB feature that formed in an island arc environment. Marbles are interpreted to represent metamorphosed marine carbonate rocks. Integration of geochronological and geochemical study indicates that the marble and amphibolite should be an early Palaeozoic oceanic island–seamount association. It suggests the Cathaysia Block underwent oceanic subduction during collisional orogenesis in the early Palaeozoic. This subduction is thought to have initiated prior to ca. 437 Ma. The U–Pb zircon ages of younger intrusive granites indicate that final amalgamation occurred before ca. 392 Ma. During this process, east and west Wuyi were amalgamated to form the unified Cathaysia Block. Thus, it suggests that there was no unified pre‐Devonian basement in the Cathaysia Block. We undertook an integrated approach incorporating whole‐rock geochemistry and detrital zircon U‐Pb geochronology from Permian sedimentary rocks in the Solonker area of central Inner Mongolia, China with the aim of constraining the tectonic evolution of the eastern segment of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt. Geochemical analysis reveals a close relationship between the sedimentary and volcanic rock suites in the study region. Detrital zircons from seven samples collected from the Zhesi Formation yield U‐Pb ages that cluster around 309–275 Ma and 464–435 Ma, with two main age peaks of ~452 and ~288 Ma. However, additional detrital zircons with ages in the range of 2,634–543 Ma are sparse and with no obvious age peaks. The results suggest that the deposition of the Zhesi Formation occurred from the Middle to the Late Permian and from two major age provenances: the Precambrian basement of the North China Plate (~1,880 Ma and ~2,520 Ma) and the Paleozoic Southern orogenic belt along the northern margin of North China (~288 Ma and ~452 Ma). In this contribution, we suggest that the Zhesi Formation in the Solonker area formed in response to the Early to Middle Permian subduction tectonic setting of the Paleo‐Asian Ocean (PAO), probably formed in a forearc basin and that the final closure of the PAO occurred after the Late Permian. The Sadaigoumen Mo deposit is a typical porphyry‐type deposit which is located in the northern margin of the North China Craton (NCC), China. Mineralization of the deposit mainly occurs as finely disseminated within the host granites. To get a better understanding of the ore‐forming process of the deposit and the genetic link between mineralization and host igneous rocks, we report LA‐ICP‐MS zircon U–Pb and whole‐rock major and trace elements data from the magmatic rocks which are exposed in the mining area. LA‐ICP‐MS U–Pb analyses yield weighed mean ages of 239.5 ± 0.58 Ma for alkali‐feldspar granites and 1872.8 ± 5.1 Ma for porphyritic granodiorite. The porphyritic granodiorite, which was previously considered to be part of the Hongqiyingzi Group, is redefined as Palaeoproterozoic highly fractionated I‐type granites: (1) They have high contents of SiO2 (69.57–72.21 wt.%) and Al2O3 (13.24–13.90 wt.%) and high Na2O + K2O (up to 7.1 wt.%) and FeOT/MgO values (6.7 to 7.7), and (2) significant depletion of Eu, Sr, Ba, P, and Ti elements; (3) compared with typical A‐type granites, they have lower Ga (around 20.5 ppm) and 10000 × Ga/Al values (around 2.8); the Triassic alkali‐feldspar granite samples also show highly fractionated I‐type geochemical signatures with high Na2O + K2O (8.40–8.50 wt.%), FeO*/MgO (12.67–13.49), and Ga/Al (2.58–2.81) ratios. The higher ∑REE values (>199.69 ppm) and depletions of Nb, Ta, and Ba make it different from typical A‐type granites. By comparative analysis of geochemical data, we believed that the ca. 1872.8 Ma porphyritic granodiorite formed in a tectonic environment resembling that of magmatic arc granites and the ca. 239.5 Ma alkali‐feldspar granite formed in syn‐collisional settings which is related to closure of Palaeo‐Asian Ocean. Our new data, combined with previous studies, allow us to speculate that the Triassic alkali‐feldspar granite is directly related to the Mo mineralization in this area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The bedded Jingtieshan barite deposit, which occurs in the western part of North Qilian, NW China, is intimately associated with banded iron formation (BIF) and is hosted in weakly metamorphosed Mesoproterozoic clastic–carbonate rocks. Although numerous studies have focused on the BIF, the origin of the barite mineralization is poorly understood. The barite orebody occurs as a lenticular/stratiform unit overlying and locally interlayered with the BIF. In this contribution, we present a comprehensive and integrated study of the geochemistry and S–O–Sr‐isotope characteristics of the Jingtieshan barite deposit, thereby constraining its origin and the depositional conditions in the Mesoproterozoic ocean. The ore is composed of barite, minor carbonate minerals, specularite, and other minerals and is characterized by low Sr concentrations (711–1469 ppm), total rare earth element concentrations (7–28 ppm), and La/Ce values, relative enrichment in light rare earth element, positive Gd anomalies, and elevated Lan/Cen, which indicate that mineralizing fluids were derived from seawater and submarine hydrothermal solutions. Barite separates yield δ34S = 19.5–29.1‰ and δ18O = 12.7–23.6‰, which are consistent with a coeval seawater origin for SO42− modified bacterial sulfate reduction. Moreover, the 87Sr/86Sr values suggest that Sr, as well as Ba, was derived from contemporaneous seawater and hydrothermal solutions, with additional radiogenic Sr derived from late‐stage hydrothermal alteration. The redox‐sensitive trace element ratios of V/(V + Ni), V/(V + Cr), and V/Cr, combined with negative Ce anomalies (0.11–0.82), indicate that the barite formed under oxic marine conditions in a redox stratified ocean. Geological, geochemical, and isotope data support a sedimentary–exhalative origin for the Jingtieshan barite deposit, where barite was deposited under oxic conditions in a shallow marine environment when ascending Ba‐bearing submarine hydrothermal solutions encountered sulfate‐rich seawater. Geochemical responses of saline aquifers toward large quantities of CO2 injection are important to the monitoring and safety assessment of CO2 storage. Detailed studies on water-rock-CO2 interactions of non-marine saline aquifers through three batch-reaction experiments were carried out under simulated reservoir conditions (T = 100°C, P = 10 MPa). pH decreased by 1∼2 and TDS increased by 268 mg/L ∼561 mg/L. Water type evolved from original Cl·SO4-Na to HCO3Cl·SO4-Na with a water/rock ratio of 3:1. Chemical components of HCO3, Ca, Mg and K and trace elements of Al, Cr, Mn, Ni and Zn showed a significant increase post CO2 injection. Heavy metals including Cr, Mn, Ni, and Zn in the post-reaction water exceeded drinking water standards, indicating potential pollution to shallow fresh aquifers by brine/CO2 leakage. K-feldspar and albite were variably dissolved and kaolinite, chlorite, and Fe-bearing minerals of pyrite and hematite were newly formed, confirmed by suspended materials in the post-reaction water, red sediments on the bottom of the reactor, and mineral saturation indexes. δ2HH2O shift was observed and discussed, which was not reported in previous water-rock-CO2 interactions studies. One possible reason is geochemical processes of new clay minerals formation under low temperature causing water consumption and δ2HH2O enriched in the residual water. The CO2 saturation and fraction of DIC from CO2 dissolution were calculated to be 23%-36% and 33%-49% under experimental conditions and it is suggested that they can be used for CO2 storage capacity assessment. The Binchuan area of Yunnan is located in the western part of the Emeishan large igneous province in the western margin of the Yangtze Block. In the present study, the Wuguiqing profile in thickness of about 1440 m is mainly composed of high-Ti basalts, with minor picrites in the lower part and andesites, trachytes, and rhyolites in the upper part The picrites have relatively higher platinum-group element (PGE) contents (ΣPGE=16.3-28.2 ppb), with high Cu/Zr and Pd/Zr ratios, and low S contents (5.03-16.9 ppm), indicating the parental magma is S-unsaturated and generated by high degree of partial melting of the Emeishan large igneous province (ELIP) mantle source. The slightly high Cu/Pd ratios (11 000-24 000) relative to that of the primitive mantle suggest that 0.007% sulfides have been retained in the mantle source. The PGE contents of the high-Ti basalts exhibit a wider range (ΣPGE=0.517-30.8 ppb). The samples in the middle and upper parts are depleted in PGE and have εNd (260 Ma) ratios ranging from −2.8 to −2.2, suggesting that crustal contamination of the parental magma during ascent triggered sulfur saturation and segregation of about 0.446%-0.554% sulfides, and the sulfide segregation process may also provide the ore-forming material for the magmatic Cu-Ni-PGE sulfide deposits close to the studied basalts. The samples in this area show Pt-Pd type primitive mantle-normalized PGE patterns, and the Pd/Ir ratios are higher than that of the primitive mantle (Pd/Ir=1), indicating that the obvious differentiation between Ir-group platinum-group elements (IPGE) and Pd-group platinum-group elements (PPGE) are mainly controlled by olivine or chromites fractionation during magma evolution. The Pd/Pt ratios of most samples are higher than the average ratio of mantle (Pd/Pt=0.55), showing that the differentiation happened between Pt and Pd. The differentiation in picrites may be relevant to Pt hosted in discrete refractory Pt-alloy phase in the mantle; whereas the differentiation in the high-Ti basalts is probably associated with the fractionation of Fe-Pt alloys, coprecipitating with Ir-Ru-Os alloys. Some high-Ti basalt samples exhibit negative Ru anomalies, possibly due to removal of laurite collected by the early crystallized chromites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Geochemical characteristics of the Chagande'ersi molybdenum deposit in Inner Mongolia and its genesis were analyzed in this study using rock mineralography and rock geochemical testing. The mineralized country rocks of the Chagande'ersi molybdenum deposit consist mainly of medium-to fine-grained monzogranite, medium-to fine-grained rich-K granite, with minor fine-grained K-feldspar granite veins and quartz veins. The rocks are characterized by high silica, rich alkali, high potassium, which are favorable factors for molybdenum mineralization. The rocks have the Rittmann index ranging from 1.329 to 1.961, an average Na2O+K2O value of 7.41, and Al2O3/(CaO+Na2O+K2O) >1, suggesting that the rocks belong to the high-K calc-alkaline peraluminous granite. The typical rock samples are enriched in Rb, Th, K and light rare earth elements, depleted in Sr, Ba, Nb, P and Ti, and these features are similar to that of the melt granite resulting from collision of plate margins. The δEu of the rocks falls the zone between the crust granite and crust-mantle granite, and are close to that of the crust granite; (La/Lu)N indicates the formation environment of granite is a continental margin setting. The Nb/Ta ratios are close to that of the average crust (10); the Zr/Hf ratios of monzogranite are partly below the mean mantle (34-60), while the Zr/Hf ratio of K-feldspar granite are close to the mean value in the crust Comprehensive analyses show that the granite in this area formed during the transition period between tectonic collision and post-collision. During the plate collision and orogeny, the crust and mantle material were mixed physically, remelting into lava and then crystal fractionation, finally gave rise to the formation of the rock body in this area. The well-studied Mesozoic and Cenozoic volcanic rocks of the Gangdise Terrane, southern Tibet, are widely interpreted to have resulted from subduction of the Neotethys; however, Late Paleozoic volcanic rocks and their tectonic setting remain poorly studied. Based on new geological data, we carried out stratigraphical and geochemical analyses of Permian volcano-stratigraphic sequences within an east–west-trending, fault-bounded zone of uplift in the central Gangdise Terrane. Sedimentary rocks in this area consist of platform carbonates and terrigenous clastic rocks that represent widespread shallow-marine sedimentary basins developed around northern Gondwana. A regression or tectonic uplift event is recorded in Permian sedimentary rocks that show the local development of fluvial environments. The sedimentary succession contains evidence of two volcanic stages: a period of basaltic extrusions and younger explosive felsic magmatism. The first volcanic stage is Early and Middle Permian in age. Tholeiitic basaltic lavas are exposed around Maizhokunggar (Tangjia) and Lhunzhub in central Gangdise. The Lower Permian basalts are relatively enriched in MgO (4.58–12.19%), whereas the Middle Permian basalts are characterized by high Al2O3 contents (11.75–21.22%). Rocks of both ages are enriched in large-ion lithophile elements (LILE) and light rare earth elements (LREE), and show pronounced negative Nb and Ta anomalies. Total REE contents and light (LREE)/heavy (HREE) ratios increased from the Early to Middle Permian. Observed variations in initial Sr, Nd, and Pb isotopes (87Sr/86Sri = 0.7013–0.7066, 207Pb/204Pbi = 15.53–15.63, and 208Pb/204Pbi = 38.04–38.64 for a given 206Pb/204Pbi; εNd = +0.69 to −11.55) can be explained by crustal interaction with mantle sources, as is characteristic of metasomatism by slab-derived fluids or assimilation and fractional crystallization (AFC) processes during magmatic evolution. The observed geochemical signatures, coupled with stratigraphic constraints, support the hypothesis that an initial arc formed during the Permian due to southward subduction of the Paleotethys, predating the well-known Mesozoic arc preserved in the Gangdise Terrane. A mafic granulite body was newly discovered in the Altay Orogenic Belt, northwest China. The rocks comprise a suite of coarse-grained and fine-grained granulites. Orthopyroxenes (hypersthenes) in the rocks have high XMg and low Al2O3 contents, whereas clinopyroxenes have low TiO2 and Al2O3 contents. Amphiboles and biotites have a high Mg/(Mg + Fe2+) ratio and low contents of F and Cl. The peak metamorphic pressure–temperature (P–T) conditions are estimated as 750–780°C and 6–7 kbar, and retrograde P–T conditions are in the range of 590–620°C and 2.3–3.7 kbar, indicating significant decompression. Metamorphic reactions and P–T estimates define a clockwise P–T path. Geochemically, the rocks are high in Mg/(Mg + Fe) and Al2O3, depleted in U, Th, K and Rb, and characterized by light rare earth element enrichment and a weak positive Eu anomaly. The Altay mafic granulite shows depleted Nb, P and Ti contents in the mid-oceanic ridge basalt normalized spider diagram. The geochemical characteristics suggest that the protolith of the Altay mafic granulite was calc-alkaline basalt and andesite with an island-arc affinity. The rock has a high 143Nd/144Nd ratio with ℇNd(0) > 0, indicating derivation from a mantle-depleted source. In the present study, a two-stage model for the evolution of the Altay mafic granulite is proposed: an early stage in which calc-alkaline basalt and andesite with island-arc affinity were subducted into a deeper level of the crust and subjected to granulite-facies metamorphism generating the mafic granulite, followed by the later stage exhumation of the system into the upper crust by the late Paleozoic thrusting. The article focuses on a study which proposes that the lead-zinc-silver polymetallic deposits located in the Lanping Basin of Yunnan Province, China are exhalative sedimentary in origin, which means that they are formed by the release of ore-bearing hydrothermal fluids into a water reservoir, resulting in the precipitation of stratiform ore. A large amount of field evidence for the study was collected through petrology and geochemistry analysis.

The article presents a study that focus on geochemistry features of dolomites associated with zinc-lead (Zn-Pb) mineralization in Maoping Pb- Zn Deposit in Yunnan, China. The study of Mississippi Valley type (MVT) mineralization in the U.S. that observes spatial relationship between the margins and the alteration zones of dolomitization. It informs that alteration mapping of dolomites shows that dolomitization is exhibited by the change in grayness of limestone.

The article discusses the geological and geochemical characteristics of the Pingshun Akarn Iron Deposit, Southern Taihang Mountains, China.
