This paper explores how social workers intervene with affluent parents when there are child protection concerns about neglect. Based on data gathered from a small‐scale exploratory qualitative study with 30 practitioners from 12 local authorities across England, this study examined three overarching questions: (a) How do social workers identify risk factors for vulnerable children in affluent circumstances? (b) Which factors inhibit or enable social workers' engagement with resistant affluent parents when there are child protection concerns? (c) What kind of skills, knowledge, and experience is necessary for social workers to effectively assert their professional authority with affluent parents when there are concerns about abuse and neglect? The findings revealed that indicators of neglect can be difficult to identify and challenging to respond to when parents are affluent. Results indicate that social workers have to navigate complex power relationships with parents who are able to use their class privileges to resist their interventions. In a contemporary context dominated by reports of the historical institutional abuse of children and young people in residential children's homes, and where the voice of workers is largely absent, this study explores the views and experiences of 26 workers in the Republic of Ireland regarding relationship‐based practice. Using an exploratory, qualitative approach and informed by 'appreciative inquiry'; semi‐structured interviews were undertaken with 26 residential care workers. The findings highlight that relationship‐based practice has not been fully understood and/or embraced in practice because of a culture of fear that has permeated the Irish residential childcare system. Using theoretical concepts associated with the sociology of fear, the paper explores their effects on practice and argues that these are amplified given the current low status of residential care workers, the impact of media reports and the influence of current discourses around professional practice in which 'objective' and 'emotionally detached' practice is viewed as synonymous with efficiency and effectiveness. Approaches to self-management traditionally focus upon individual capacity to make behavioural change. In this paper, we use Bourdieu's concepts of habitus and capital to demonstrate the impact of structural inequalities upon chronic illness self-management through exploring findings from 28 semi-structured interviews conducted with people from a lower socioeconomic region of Adelaide, South Australia who have type 2 diabetes. The data suggests that access to capital is a significant barrier to type 2 diabetes self-management. While many participants described having sufficient cultural capital to access and assess health information, they often lacked economic capital and social capital in the form of support networks who promote health. Participants were often involved in social networks in which activities which are contrary to self-management have symbolic value. As a consequence, they entered relationships with health professionals at a disadvantage. We conclude that structural barriers to self-management arising from habitus resulting in the performance of health behaviours rooted in cultural and class background and limited access to capital in the form of economic resources, social networks, health knowledge and prestige may have a negative impact on capacity for type 2 diabetes self-management. ABSTRACT This paper presents the results of a study comparing the impacts on helping relationships of locating front-line child protection service providers in central locations or in accessible school and neighbourhood service delivery sites. Creating easier access to front-line child protection service providers, fostering more positive community perceptions of child welfare services, improving client and service provider satisfaction with helping relationships and services, and increasing families' willingness to ask for help were core objectives at the accessible sites. Using a quasi-experimental outcome design, file reviews and qualitative interviews with service providers and parents, this study presents evidence that accessible sites had substantial success in achieving these objectives when compared with central service delivery locations. Background: The present study aimed to qualitatively explore the food choice determinants of both Chinese immigrants living in Australia and Chinese people living in mainland China. Methods: Eight Chinese Australian participants (female, n = 5; male, n = 3) and ten mainland Chinese participants (female, n = 5; male, n = 5) were recruited from Australia (primarily in Melbourne, Victoria) and China (predominantly in Zhengzhou, Henan province) between June 2021 and March 2022. Participants were diverse in age, socio‐economic background, occupation and health status. Semi‐structured in‐depth interviews were conducted in Mandarin either face‐to‐face or using online video/voice calls. Interviews were audio‐recorded and transcribed verbatim. Investigator triangulation was used to enhance scientific rigour. Results: Four themes were identified: (1) food choice determinants were shaped by traditional and modern nutrition perceptions and personal food philosophy; (2) physiological responses to food provide direct feedback that impacts future food choices; (3) consideration of convenience was a predominant influencer of food choice; and (4) the differences in food environments between China and Australia promoted distinctive food choice determinants for Chinese people. Conclusions: Chinese Australian and mainland Chinese participants' food choices are shaped by traditional Chinese nutrition philosophy, modern Western nutrition science and the contemporary food environment. There are clear cultural characteristics in their food choice determinants that should be considered by health educators, nutrition professionals and nutrition policymakers when developing culturally appropriate health interventions for Chinese people. Background: Childhood cancer is proportionately higher in Africa and these result in increased demands on caregivers. The inability of affected children to take care of themselves; coupled with prescribed medical interventions presents physical and social burdens on family caregivers. Aims and methods: This study used a qualitative exploratory design to explore the physical and socioeconomic challenges for family caregivers of children diagnosed with cancer and receiving care at one of the biggest tertiary hospitals in Ghana. A total of thirteen family caregivers of children with cancer were interviewed. Findings: Two major themes were identified: Burden of care on Physical Health and Socioeconomic burdens of caregiving on the family caregiver. It was reported that family caregivers encounter physical challenges such as Aches and Pains when performing caregiving activities, Loss of Appetite, Fatigue, Compromised Functional State and Sleep Disruption. The second theme, Socioeconomic burdens of caregiving on family caregivers account for the consequences of caregiving on social lives, family relationships, finance and employment. Conclusions and recommendations: The study recommends that measures that provided relief for the caregivers such as teaching them to adopt local measures of pain relief such as massage should be encouraged. Policies should adopt measures that encourage caregivers to have some days of rest whiles providing care to their children with cancer. Also, health insurance packages that provide relief for the cost of accessing healthcare, should be extended to children with cancers to support their caregivers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using a sequential exploratory mixed‐methods design, this research examined the role of national values on perceived organizational and employee resilience in times of disaster. First, semi‐structured interviews were conducted with 13 Filipino employees and leaders involved in disaster response in six organizations. Thematic analysis revealed bayanihan, malasakit, pananagutan, and volunteerism as values relevant to the disaster response and management efforts of organizations. The Manifestations of Filipino National Values for Disaster in Organizational Management scale was then constructed reflecting these four national values in order to examine the relationship of these values with perceived organizational and employee resilience. In total, 221 employees from various industries participated in the survey. Structural equation modelling was used to test the hypothesized relationships. Results showed a full mediation model wherein except for pananagutan, the national values of bayanihan, malasakit, and volunteerism significantly predicted employee resilience through perceived organizational resilience. These findings indicate that employee resilience can be enhanced not only through personal resources, but also by drawing on organizational and sociocultural resources accessible to employees in times of disaster. Background: Takotsubo syndrome (TTS) is an acute and reversible type of heart failure that shares common features with acute coronary syndrome. It is usually caused by psychological or physical stress, but for a third, triggers cannot be identified. Patients also suffer from residual symptoms and decreased mental health in the recovery phase and may struggle to comprehend and manage everyday living. Aim: To describe patients' experiences when afflicted by takotsubo syndrome, after discharge from hospital. Method: An inductive explorative design using a qualitative approach with semi‐structured individual interviews. The text was analysed using qualitative content analysis according to Graneheim and Lundman. Result: Ten women and one man afflicted by TTS were interviewed two to twelve months after discharge. Six sub‐categories were identified, and a main category emerged: The process from symptom onset and understanding to increased awareness and changes in life. The patients suffered from emotional reactions and they sought answers and understanding about the underlying causes. The disease led to changes in patients' daily lives as they were affected physically and psychologically. Spouses and/or bystanders had a positive supporting role, but the patients desired more support from the healthcare professionals such as an earlier appointment for follow‐up with a nurse. Conclusion: Being afflicted by TTS can lead to changes in life conditions but these changes vary among patients. Becoming ill was associated to acute physical stress and prolonged psychological stress and they suffered from emotional reactions. The follow‐up care needs to improve as the patients need more guidance from healthcare professionals and earlier appointment for follow‐up with a nurse. In the present study, we examine socio‐cultural and practical aspects of human papillomavirus vaccination (HPVV) through a multi‐sited study of framings. We ask how HPVV is framed in the daily lives of vaccination‐aged Finnish girls and in school nurses' everyday work. We then mirror these framings against both each other and Finland's official vaccination campaign. Based on analysis of interviews with 24 nurses and 12 girls and the campaign materials, we argue first that the campaign frames vaccination as an individual, knowledge‐based decision reflecting the informed consent principle. Second, however, the vaccination is framed in the everyday lives of eligible girls through gendered social ties and as a gendered and cohort‐specific event pivoting around the needle prick. Third, HPVV is not primarily framed in the school nurses' work as preparing the girls for the vaccination decision by sharing official information but through trust‐based social relationships with the girls and their parents. We conclude that, as the vaccination is not an issue of individually reflected and knowledge‐based decision‐making for the two interviewed key groups, the official Finnish HPVV campaign and the undergirding informed consent principle drift into problems in their practical implementation. This study examines how, in the words of Appadurai, “locality emerges in a global world” (Appadurai, 1996, p.18). Specifically, it articulates the nature of information practices in the lives of 14 newcomers to Canada who have migrated from the Philippines to the medium‐size city of Winnipeg. Using a qualitative and exploratory approach, this study applies a transnational lens to this area of research to make explicit the detailed activities and outcomes of newcomer information practices, in particular drawing out the dimensions and implications of newcomers' participation within and across local and global social networks, translocal information landscapes, and across their settlement trajectories. The result is a Translocal Meaning Making process that describes how newcomers come to make sense and use information across distinct and sometimes contradictory information spaces. Our findings suggest that migrant information practices shift across space and time and are constituted both individually, through cognitive and affective processes, and socially, through shared imaginaries, through interactions within and across translocal information landscapes, and through complex deterritorialized networks of people and resources. Globally, stroke is the leading cause of death and disease burden. While post‐stroke studies have been conducted, they excluded survivors and caregivers from underserved communities. It can be argued that the impact of stroke on survivors and caregivers from underserved communities may be greater. Using qualitative exploratory research design, the purpose of this study was to examine the lived experiences of post‐stroke recovery and readjustment among stroke survivors and stroke caregivers from an underserved community. Two separate focus groups were conducted, one each for stroke survivors and caregivers. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data. Finding meaning in life is the general theme of stroke survivors' and stroke caregivers' journey of post‐stroke recovery and readjustment. For stroke survivors, the transition to stroke recovery required time, life goal reconfiguration, willpower, humor, and network support. Post‐stroke caregiving is a daily navigation and negotiation influenced by internal and external processes. Personal, economic, and socio‐cultural nuances play a role in how post‐stroke recovery is lived and experienced. Objectives This study examined the main sources of strain and the presence of psychological distress in a sample of centenarians' children who assumed the role of primary caregivers. Method A sample of 43 children (M age = 67.10 ± 6.67 years; 90.7% female) caring for a centenarian parent was interviewed and asked about their overall caregiving experience. Information on caregiving burden (Zarit Burden Interview) and psychological distress (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale) was also obtained. Several characteristics of the caregiving dyads (e.g. age, co-residence) were tested to compare caregivers with and without anxiety and depressive symptoms. Qualitative data from the interviews were analysed for recurrent themes using thematic analysis. Results Main caregiving impacts concern social and leisure dimensions (role captivity), with important personal mid-life and late-life plans needing to be changed or postponed. Centenarians' children present higher levels of anxiety ( M = 6.95 ± 4.7) than depression ( M = 6.0 ± 4.1), and psychological distress was found to be significantly associated with high subjective burden, low life satisfaction, poorer perceived health, and perceived income inadequacy. Conclusion The significant levels of psychological distress, along with the loss of autonomy and incapacity to prosecute plans for retirement, reinforce the psychological demands of late-life caregiving. Background: Telephone surveys are intended to reduce attrition in longitudinal studies. For paediatric chronic pain patients, the comparability of pain-related information gathered using telephone interviews and postal surveys remain unknown. Furthermore, it remains unknown how social desirability may influence answers.Methods: To compare data from telephone interviews and postal surveys, a randomized cross-over design with two measure points 2 weeks apart and four conditions (combinations of telephone interviews (T) and postal surveys (P): P-T, T-P, P-P, T-T) was conducted in a sample of N = 323 paediatric chronic pain patients.Results: In the inter-group comparison, pain-related information did not differ between telephone interviews and postal surveys except for the information on pain location (back and extremities). Agreement measures of the intra-group comparisons suggest substantial to excellent agreements for all items and did not differ between the groups. The internal consistency of a disability scale was excellent for both assessment modes; the number of missing values did not differ. Participation rate was higher for telephone interviews compared to the postal surveys. Across both time points, attrition was lowest for the groups without a switch in assessment mode compared to the groups with a switch in assessment mode. Except for pain-related school absence, no effect of social desirability occurred.Conclusions: Telephone interviews are a useful method to achieve a high response rate. Pain locations should be asked for separately and not in an open question when interviewing children and adolescents on the telephone.Significance: Telephone interviews are a good method to achieve a high response rate and obtain valid data in studies with paediatric chronic pain patients. Information and communication technologies (ICTs) provide a distinctive structure of opportunities with the potential to promote political engagement. However, concerns remain over unequal technological access in our society, as political resources available on the internet empower those with the resources and motivation to take advantage of them, leaving those who are disengaged farther behind. Hence, those who face digital inequalities are not only deprived of the benefits of the so-called Information Society, they are also deprived of exercising their civic rights. To promote political engagement among the marginalized, we analyze different sociotechnical factors that may play a role in promoting their inclusion in future political activities. We employed a survey for marginalized communities to analyze a set of research questions relating to sociotechnical factors. We show that online content creation, digital freedom, and access to the mobile Internet may positively impact political engagement. The development of these factors may not only promote the inclusion of marginalized populations in future political events, but also help to build a more equal society where everyone's voice has a chance to be heard. Cardiovascular disease exerts an enormous burden on women's health. The intake of a healthy diet may reduce this burden. However, social norms and economic constraints are often factors that restrain women from paying attention to their diet. Underpinned by critical realism, this study explores how gender/sex influences decision‐making regarding food consumption among women of low socioeconomic status (SES). The study was carried out at two cardiac facilities in Karachi, Pakistan, on 24 participants (male and female from different ethnic backgrounds), who had received health education. Using an interpretive descriptive approach, the study identified major barriers to a healthy diet: proscribed gender roles and lack of women's autonomy, power, male domination, and abusive behaviours. Cardiovascular risk and disease outcomes for the Pakistani women of low SES are likely to further escalate if individual and structural barriers are not reduced using multifactorial approaches. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease ( COPD) is a major cause of disability, morbidity and mortality in old age, representing a significant burden for family carers. However, knowledge regarding the specific issues faced by men in the COPD caregiving role is nonexistent. This study explored the experience of husbands and sons providing care to a family member with moderate-to-severe COPD. A cross-sectional qualitative study using in-depth, semi-structured individual interviews was conducted with twelve men carers: seven husbands with a mean age of 70.9 ± 8.8 years and five sons with a mean age of 43.4 ± 10.5 years. The interviews were analysed for recurrent themes using thematic analysis. Main findings suggest that men are committed and dedicated carers; however, differences between husbands and sons related to 'meaning', 'challenges and constraints', 'fears and concerns about the future', 'needs' and 'positive aspects' have emerged. These differences reflect relationship and generational differences and are of relevance when planning adequate community support interventions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examined both continuity and familial, intrapsychic, and environmental predictors of change in adolescent attachment security across a 2-year period from middle to late adolescence. Assessments included the Adult Attachment Interview, observed mother-adolescent interactions, test-based data, and adolescent self-reports obtained from an ethnically and socioeconomically diverse sample of moderately at-risk adolescents interviewed at ages 16 and 18. Substantial stability in security was identified. Beyond this stability, however, relative declines in attachment security were predicted by adolescents' enmeshed, overpersonalizing behavior with their mothers; depressive symptoms; and poverty status. Results suggest that although security may trend upward for nonstressed adolescents, stressors that overwhelm the capacity for affect regulation and that are not easily assuaged by parents predict relative declines in security over time. In the United States, obesity rates among children remain a pressing public health concern Compounding that, disparities exist with higher childhood obesity among minority and lower socioeconomic neighborhoods. Physical activity is associated with more favorable weight status in children and adolescents. Purpose: This study aimed to identify and explore factors that influence physical activity in children in a low‐income neighborhood. Design and Methods: An exploratory descriptive qualitative design was employed using Photovoice and focus group interviews to identify barriers and facilitators of physical activity. Results: Eight adults and five children enrolled in the study. Photovoice was used to prompt discussions during the focus groups. Analysis of verbatim transcripts included constructed coding with categorization into themes. Four themes of (a) knowledge, (b) play, (c) opportunities and a changing environment, and (d) resources were identified. Among children, three themes from the children's focus group were identified as (a) knowledge, (b) play, and (c) environment. This study found both resource and knowledge challenges, as well as a strong commitment to providing physical activity opportunities. Practice Implications: Continued efforts are needed to develop and implement physical activity interventions to reduce obesity and improve health among children in impoverished, urban areas.
