The current study uses a mixed method design to investigate Kenyan and Ghanaian adolescents' experiences of puberty, and the relations between gender, country of origin, pubertal status, and body image appraisals (N = 86; Ghana = 46, Kenya = 40, 52.9% female aged 13 and 14). Qualitative results revealed seven major themes; puberty means a universal period of growth and transition into adulthood but also evokes negative emotions of shame, anxiety, and embarrassment, being in sync with peers during puberty is important and knowing that others in their lives similarly experience puberty is reassuring. Quantitative results revealed significant gender and country differences in pubertal status and body image. Ghanaian adolescents had more advanced pubertal status and more positive body image appraisals compared to Kenyan adolescents. Moderation analysis results revealed that for the Kenyan sample, post-pubertal males had less favorable body image appraisals than their counterparts who were still pre pubertal whilst for females, post-pubertal girls had more favorable body images than their counterparts. No such effects were observed with the Ghanaian sample. The findings highlight the need for context considerations in understanding body image during the pubertal transition to help identify relevant protective factors for possible interventions. The results affirm the importance of positive body image promotions for adolescents within the African context and suggest the need for much more comprehensive sex education with gender-specific components to help allay fears about puberty, thus preventing the development of possible adaptation problems., (© 2024 Society for Research on Adolescence.)

Objective Muscle dysmorphia is a relatively recently identified psychological condition that, since its inception, has been variously conceptualized as an eating disorder and subsequently as a type of body dysmorphic disorder within the somatoform disorders. This review aims to inform and encourage ongoing debate surrounding the diagnostic placement of this disorder. Method We present a review and synthesis of the extant literature with a view to informing future decisions regarding the conceptualization of muscle dysmorphia. Results The validity of muscle dysmorphia as a clinical entity has been empirically demonstrated. While the condition bears little semblance to somatization as currently conceptualized, the research suggests a strong conceptual similarity with anorexia nervosa. However, future research needs to utilize more appropriate measures of male eating disorder pathology. Muscle dysmorphia is also inclusive of obsessive compulsive features that are typical to those seen in eating disorder presentations. Discussion We suggest that muscle dysmorphia be reanalyzed through the lens of an eating disorder spectrum. Recognition of muscle dysmorphia as an eating disorder may offer more clinical utility in recognizing the male experience of eating disorder pathology and also help reduce the number of current male cases falling into the EDNOS category. © 2010 by Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Summary: The paper examines preferences for nutritional and health‐related food attributes, the importance placed on intrinsic and extrinsic characteristics of food and the individual, household and psychographic determinants when making choices. To address the lack of empirical studies, the paper estimates Poisson, negative binomial and linear regressions using data from 457 young Chinese adults between 18 and 30 years. The results show a strong preference for nutritional and health‐related food attributes. Gender and unemployment are associated with a decrease in the number of nutritional features valued in food choices. In contrast, a higher income and a positive perception of body shape are associated with an increase in the number of valued nutritional features. Also, older individuals assign lower importance to intrinsic and extrinsic characteristics in evaluating food, while larger household size, higher income, and positive body shape perception increase the importance placed on intrinsic and extrinsic characteristics in evaluating food. To meet the demand of noise reduction in millimeter‐wave human body security imaging, this paper proposes a new method for 3D segmentation denoising in millimeter‐wave images. The test results indicate that with the incorporation of 3D segmentation denoising technology, the noise in the background area of millimeter wave images has decreased by approximately 20–40 dB, significantly improving image quality. The detection rate has increased from 90% to 95%, while the false positive rate has decreased from 13% to 5%. This has important practical significance for real‐world applications. ABSTRACT This commentary discusses a principal contribution of Monocello et al.'s paper presenting a cultural models approach to body fatness perceptions, which provides a rigorous and systematic means of identifying analytic categories that are locally meaningful, in contrast to categories derived from a solely universalizing perspective. In situating their work within an underrepresented population in eating disorders research—young men in South Korea—the authors step beyond the constraints of a universalizing, or etic, framework for probing how body dissatisfaction relates to eating disorder risk. The value of an alternative analytic framework, based on a culturally local, or emic, perspective on how bodies are perceived is demonstrated through the use of a cultural models approach exploring the relationship between culturally defined conceptualizations of body image and eating disorder risk. Understanding such relationships and the meanings attributed to the myriad aspects of body image through locally grounded frameworks provides an essential tool for investigators and clinicians to better understand the lived experience of body dissatisfaction and disordered eating, and also to inform more culturally salient approaches to diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. Despite the increasing wage disparities and the unfair distribution of resources in many organizations, there have not been enough academic explorations into the role of these contextual variables on dehumanization processes and psychosocial risk factors among employees. This project addresses how perceptions of economic inequality and unfairness in the distribution of resources can influence individuals' perceptions of dehumanization and self‐objectification, and trigger detrimental consequences in the workplace. Using two correlational surveys in different cultural contexts (N = 748), and two experimental studies (N = 662), this research consistently shows that both high inequality and high unfairness perceptions decrease job satisfaction and dignity at work through dehumanization processes. Specifically, both inequality and unfairness increase perceived organizational dehumanization, which in turn increases participants' self‐objectification. Self‐objectification is associated with lower job satisfaction and dignity at work. This paper discusses the consequences of economic disparities on individuals' recognition of their own humanity. Positive body image is a contemporary construct, having only received research attention within the past two decades in an effort to elicit a more holistic, comprehensive account of the concept of body image. Nevertheless, emerging literature has suggested its direct and indirect association with improved outcomes, including indicators of well‐being (e.g. self‐compassion) and feelings towards the self (e.g. self‐esteem). Positive body image has therefore been suggested as both a potential technique and a target of actionable therapeutic work for cultivating both physical and psychological well‐being. First, through insights from quantitative and qualitative seminal works, this paper demonstrates that positive body image is: (i) a multidimensional construct, distinct from negative body image; (ii) a confluence of theoretical disciplines and influences; (iii) protective, with therapeutic capacities; (iv) a positive outcome; (v) young, yet flourishing; and (vi) socially and politically relevant. Thus, complementing what positive body image is, this paper further situates therapeutic practice within the field of positive body image by delineating and contextualising their reciprocal capacities and relevant techniques. This paper attempts to theoretically reconsider body image development in infants from a phenomenological viewpoint of the body. Because body image is defined as the mental picture of one's whole body, our main question is how we obtain the perspective to view our own body as a whole in constituting body image. First, focusing on the development of mirror self‐cognition in the first 2 years of life, we find that this perspective derives from that of others in embodied interactions with infants. We then trace the process whereby others' perspectives appear in dyadic interactions between infants and caregivers. Since joint attention is established around 9 months, this dyadic interaction is transformed into a triadic relationship between the infant, caregiver, and object, which is experienced as “secondary intersubjectivity.” Infant body image is constituted gradually within this intersubjective context. Based on phenomenological descriptions, we propose that the hands are the first organ and the face the last organ to be incorporated into one's body image. We conclude that the constitution of body image is not merely a sensory task of integrating proprioceptive and visual images of the body, but a social task of internalizing others' perspectives regarding one's own body. Background: Little is known about the effectiveness of instructors when presenting content in videos alone. In recent years, researchers have increasingly begun to explore the effects of instructors' social cues (e.g., eye gaze, body orientation, etc.) on learning. However, previous studies exploring the effects of eye gaze have confounded the role of body orientation, while studies exploring body orientation have confounded the role of eye gaze. Objectives: To explore the role of direct gaze and body orientation in learning with instructional videos, absent an instructional screen, in a less confounded manner. Methods: A total of 63 subjects were presented select concepts regarding schizophrenia. Eye‐tracking technology combined with current theories of parasocial interaction and social agency was used to explore different social cues that affect learning performance. Students were randomly assigned to one of three experimental conditions: frontal body + direct gaze group (FD group), frontal body + no direct gaze group (FND group), and lateral body + no direct gaze group (LND group). Result and Conclusions: Direct gaze facilitated students' immediate retention and transfer scores, reduced learners' extraneous cognitive load, and guided students' attention to the instructor. However, counter to our expectations, parasocial interaction did not affect social cues. Implications: In both online and offline classes, instruction is expected to be enhanced by focusing on the camera to the extent possible, particularly when instructional screens are absent. This special issue Time to Move brings together a collection of experimental papers, targeted reviews and opinion articles that lay out the latest MoBI findings. A wide range of topics across different fields are covered including art, athletics, virtual reality, and mobility. What unites these diverse topics is the common goal to enhance and restore human abilities by reaching a better understanding on how cognition is implemented by the brain‐body relationship. Background: Hookwire localization (HWL) is the gold standard for localizing impalpable tumours for breast conserving surgery. An alternative technique, radioguided occult lesion localization using iodine‐125 seeds (ROLLIS), has been associated with lower re‐excision rates. This paper investigates if cosmetic outcomes differ in women undergoing breast conserving surgery with HWL or ROLLIS. Methods: Women who had ROLLIS or HWL guided excision for impalpable breast cancer within a multicentre randomized controlled trial (RCT) (ANZCTR 12613000655741) were recruited. Exclusions were level 2 oncoplasty and mastectomy. Cosmetic outcome was calculated using BCCT.core, the Hopwood Body Image Scale and estimated percentage breast volume excised. Chi‐squared analysis was used to determine the difference between the intervention groups. Results: Analysis was performed for 123 participants (66 ROLLIS and 57 HWL). The cosmetic outcome determined by BCCT.core for all participants was good with no significant difference between the ROLLIS and HWL groups. When reviewing the number of patients who experienced either a good or excellent result, there was a significantly higher number of patients in the ROLLIS group (n = 53, 82%) compared to the HWL group (n = 42, 74%, P = 0.02. There were no differences in Hopwood Body Image Scale or estimated percentage breast volume excised between groups. There was a reduction in the frequency of re‐excision in the ROLLIS group (n = 3, 4.5%) versus HWL group (n = 8, 14%); however, this was not significant (P = 0.06). Conclusion: Pre‐operative localization of impalpable breast lesions using either ROLLIS or HWL resulted in a good cosmetic outcome with no significant difference between localization techniques. This article presents a comprehensive review of current Magnetic Imaging Techniques (MIT), specifically Magnetic Particle Imaging (MPI) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) methods as well as their impacts and potential in biomedical applications. The paper particularly focuses on several perspectives of MPI and MRI techniques including technical considerations, advantages, limitations, applications, future trends. Surprisingly, there are not many review articles that focused on MPI and MRI. This review will give a complete overview of present technology, perspectives, and potential future developments for MPI and MRI. MIT has become an essential and integral part of medical diagnosis in many large medical clinics and hospitals. This area is rapidly developing and evolving to meet the huge demands in medical diagnosis and prevention. MPI and MRI are promising technologies that provide reliable and effective diagnosis for many diseases including cancer. MIT uses non‐invasive scanning to obtain a detailed image of the body's tissues or organs without the necessity for surgery. These techniques allow us to detect symptoms of serious diseases at an early stage. Adolescence is a vulnerable period for the development of eating disorders, but there are disparities in eating disorder risk among adolescents. One population that may be at increased risk but is vastly understudied, is adolescents residing in rural regions within the United States. Rural communities face many mental and physical health disparities; however, the literature on rural adolescent eating disorder risk is nearly nonexistent. In this paper we summarize the scant literature on disordered eating and eating disorder risk and prevalence among rural US adolescents. We also detail eating disorder risk factors that may have unique influence in this population, including socioeconomic status, food insecurity, healthcare access, body image, and weight stigma. Given the presence of numerous eating disorder risk factors, we speculate that rural adolescents may be a particularly vulnerable population for eating disorders and we propose critical next steps in research for understanding eating disorder risk among the understudied population of rural adolescents. Public Significance: Rural adolescents may be at increased risk for eating disorders due to disproportionate burden of known risk factors, though this relationship remains understudied. We present a summary of the literature on prevalence and unique risk factors, proposing that this may be a high‐risk population. We detail next steps for research to understand eating disorder risk in this population to inform future prevention, identification, and treatment efforts needed in this community. Background: Video lectures which include the instructor's presence are becoming increasingly popular. Presenting a real human does, however, entail higher financial and time costs in making videos, and one innovative approach to reduce costs has been to generate a virtual speaking instructor. Objectives: The current study examined whether the use of a virtual instructor in video lectures would facilitate learning as well as a human instructor, and whether manipulating the virtual instructor's characteristics (i.e., voice and appearance) might optimize the effectiveness of the virtual instructor. Methods: Our study set four conditions. In the control condition, students watched a human instructor. In the experiment conditions, students watched one of (a) a virtual instructor which used the human instructor's voice and an AI image, (b) a virtual instructor which spoke in an AI voice with an AI image made to speak using text‐to‐speech and lip synthesis techniques, or (c) a virtual instructor with used an AI voice and an AI likable‐image of an instructor. Results and Conclusions: The AI likable instructor condition had a significant positive effect on students' learning performance and motivation, without decreasing the attention students paid to the learning materials. Implications: Our findings suggest that instructional video designers can make use of AI voices and AI images of likable humans as instructors to motivate students and enhance their learning performance. Despite their negative effects on the emotional, physical, and social wellbeing of students, weight stigma and anti‐fat attitudes are rarely systematically addressed in schools or within school psychology. Weight‐based oppression is regarded differently than other domains of prejudice. Therefore, implicit and explicit bias continue unimpeded, even when practitioners are attentive to other areas of social injustice. Mental health providers serving schools must acknowledge the prevalence of weight stigma and fatphobia to reduce their deleterious and oppressive effects. This conceptual paper outlines the underpinnings of weight stigma, overviews the necessity of addressing it and body image in educational settings, incorporates interdisciplinary perspectives, and proposes a justice‐oriented shift in the conceptualization of weight status within school psychological service delivery. Objective: This paper aims to examine the efficacy of virtual reality (VR)‐enhanced cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) in the treatment of binge‐purging type eating disorders compared to CBT. Method: Four electronic literature databases were searched to retrieve eligible randomised controlled trials (RCTs). The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses was used to select eligible studies. Meta‐analyses of extracted data were then conducted by RevMan 5.3 software. Results: Six RCTs totalling 297 participants were included. Results showed significantly larger decreases in the frequency of binges in participants who underwent VR‐enhanced CBT compared to CBT. However, there was no statistically significant difference in the change in body mass index or frequency of purges. Additionally, there were significantly larger decreases in situation‐induced body dissatisfaction in participants who underwent VR‐enhanced CBT compared to CBT, but no significant difference in improvement of overall body satisfaction. Conclusion: VR‐enhanced CBT shows greater efficacy than CBT in reducing situation‐induced body dissatisfaction and frequency of binges. Our results highlight the potential of VR in helping patients develop coping strategies to food/situational triggers. Future RCTs may benefit from recruiting more participants to reduce the impact of drop‐outs on outcome data and blinding post‐intervention assessors to reduce risk of bias. HIGHLIGHTS: Patients who underwent VR‐enhanced CBT had a statistically significant larger decrease in situation‐induced body dissatisfaction compared to patients who underwent CBT, although there was no statistically significant difference in the increase in overall body satisfaction between the two groupsThere was a larger decrease in frequency of binges for patients who underwent VR‐enhanced CBT, but no statistically significant decrease in frequency of purges. The question of racial identity in the process and outcome of aesthetic surgery is gaining increasing attention in bioethical discourse. This paper attempts an ethical examination of the racial identity issues involved in aesthetic surgery. Dominant moral values in Western culture are explored in the evaluation of aesthetic surgery. The paper argues that African values are yet to receive the universal attention they arguably deserve especially in the rethinking of values underlying aesthetic surgery as racial transformation. Through a consideration of some moral-aesthetic values in the Yorùbá-African culture, this paper further re-evaluates the ethics of aesthetic surgery. The paper contends against the propagation of aesthetic surgery as a new form of bolstering racial divides and identity in the evolving cosmopolitan age. The position defended in the paper is that some values from Yorùbá-African culture are useful in the consideration of the ethics of aesthetic surgery and more importantly, in avoiding the racial identity bias embedded in aesthetic surgery. The paper concludes that if due consideration is perhaps given to some African moral-aesthetic values in the global aesthetic surgery industry, some of the evolving moral and racial complexities would be better mediated. Cross‐cultural research into body image often takes for granted the cultural differences in body ideals that may account for variations in body image experience. Male body image across cultures is also poorly understood. Applying methods of cognitive anthropology to cross‐cultural male body ideals, this paper tests whether universalist or particularist approaches to body image better account for cultural variation. Results suggest that Americans and South Koreans draw from different cultural models in determining which features of male bodies warrant attention, as predicted by a particularist approach. Moreover, elements important for Korean male body image were found to lack emic validity among Americans, and vice‐versa. Considering significant variations in the elements of male bodies attended to, cross‐cultural body image research should more closely examine the cultural assumptions about bodies implicit in measurements to ensure that measurements are not just translated correctly, but also emically meaningful. Background: Radical orchidectomy in patients who are subsequently diagnosed with benign testicular tumours represents an overtreatment due to the deleterious effects on endogenous testosterone, fertility and body image. For these reasons, the option of partial orchidectomy (PO) should be considered in certain groups of patients. Patients with bilateral tumours (synchronous or metachronous) or a solitary testis where the lesion is no greater than 30% of the volume of the testis could be considered for a PO. Evidence has shown that PO is effective for small testicular masses with excellent survival and recurrence rates. Objectives: Highlight the feasibility of maintaining post‐operative fertility or normal semen parameters and endocrine function following PO. Materials and Methods: Data for this review were obtained through a search of the PubMed database. Papers were required to be in English and focus on adult human males. Results: Eligible and relevant papers were assessed for data regarding fertility, semen parameters and endocrine function following PO for a small testicular mass (STM). Conclusion: It is possible to preserve both fertility and endocrine function after PO. Although patients may still require adjuvant radiotherapy for concomitant intratubular germ cell neoplasia (ITGCN) which results in subfertility, endocrine function is still conserved. However, it is possible to postpone radiotherapy and continue with clinical surveillance for the purposes of fertility preservation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the Scandinavian countries, reablement has become a principle permeating all parts of elderly care, hence potentially transforming care and care work. This article explores the advent of new knowledge paradigms and practices of physiotherapists and occupational therapists transforming reabling care in particular ways, leading to what we term a logic of training emerging in the field. These professional groups have obtained a dominant position as reablement specialists in Norway and Denmark, where our extensive fieldwork was performed as part of a 3‐year research project. Taking inspiration from Annemarie Mol's concept of logic, we study how professional practices are organised and infused with specific values, meanings and ideals in situated contexts. We hence explore the logic of training, its abstracted image of the body and rational goal‐oriented model for progress measurement and its ramifications when addressing ageing bodies in a complex field marked by the unpredictabilities of the social and lived bodies, administrative rules and temporalities and the quest for empowering and involving clients. The paper concludes by pointing at new contradictions arising when practicing reabling care and particularly points out the tensions arising in care relations, where ambitions on empowering and disciplining the client and the elderly body may collide. Objective: To explore men's experiences of their partner's altered physique and body image as a result of mastectomy and subsequent reconstructive surgeries. Design: A systematic review of qualitative and mixed-methods studies. Data sources: Ovid, EBSCOhost, Web of science, SCOPUS and ASSIA ProQuest databases were searched using 1) truncations of breast cancer, hereditary breast cancer and BRCA 2) words relating to partner relationships; spouse, husband, partner, men and couple 3) breast cancer surgeries; mastectomy, prophylactic mastectomy and breast reconstruction and 4) body image. Review method: Methodological rigour was quality assessed. Results: A total of 756 citations were retrieved. Seventeen articles remained following the removal of duplicates, papers unrelated to breast cancer, male breast cancer, papers that excludedmen's experiences of their partner's breast cancer and altered body image. Thematic analysis was applied and produced five themes: experiences of the altered body, communication, impact on relationship, information giving and recommendations. Conclusion: Men indicated that perceptions of their partner's altered physique and body image, following mastectomy, was secondary to their health. Some men were distressed by their partner's bodily alterations leading to highly complex and emotive coping mechanisms. Men found talking to their partner about physique and body image challenging. Closed communication, however, often led to conflict and poor psychological well-being in both partners. To help prepare for the changes to their partner's body, men desired tailored information. Effective information giving contributes to effective coping strategies helping men to better support their partner affected or at risk from breast cancer, leading to enhanced psychological and emotional well-being in couples. This paper aims to sketch a comparison of the different and sometimes complementary approaches of Lacan and Dolto to the theory of becoming a subject - through bringing to light Dolto's clinical contributions to the Mirror Stage - and the development of her own theory on the Unconscious Image of the Body. This paper makes extensive use of the correspondence between Dolto and Lacan published in 2005, as well as of the references they made to each other in their written work. Both have a Freudian theoretical background, but Dolto's theories are built upwards from the observation of infant and child development as well as from their treatment, whilst Lacan's stems from adult psychoanalysis, the re-reading of Freud's cases and structural anthropology and linguistics. 'Body image' is a familiar concept in work with patients with eating disorders, but usually refers only to the distorted way in which the patient views her external body. However, patients with eating disorders can also experience distorted ideas about the insides of their bodies, specifically related to their bodies' abilities to metabolize food and fluids; they often conceive of their bodies as stuffed full of undigested and ultimately indigestible food. This aspect of the dysfunctional imagined body (Lemma, 2010) is often not openly discussed but engenders significant anxiety, perpetuates eating disorder symptoms, and can contribute to the eating disorder patient's need for inpatient treatment. Although acknowledging physiologic and cultural contributions to the construction of a dysfunctional imagined digestive system, this paper ultimately utilizes Bion's alimentary metaphor (Bion, 1962a) to discuss the relationship between alpha‐functioning and the development of a functioning imagined digestive system. Drawing upon concepts of expressive equipment and body image, the aim of this study is to explore how men diagnosed and treated for penile cancer construct their penis and its surgical disfigurement (penectomy). Using maximum variation sampling with the intention to acquire the broadest range of experiences of stage of disease and treatment, 27 cisgender men (aged 48–83, x=63) who had surgical treatment consented for their data to be archived for analysis. From a dramaturgical perspective, the constructionist thematic analysis explored direct and indirect talk about the penis after surgery. The analysis showed that through the graphic and sequential narratives of dismemberment revealed, participants constructed a post‐surgery period in which they both wanted and did not want to see their penis. Additionally, participants constructed themselves managing difficult emotions through others and seeing themselves being rejected by a potentially desiring (female) Other. The findings extend research on male genitals by showing how the post‐surgery penis can function as something hidden but visceral and traumatic when revealed. Importantly, this paper illustrates body image as expressive equipment where body and identity are formed in the image of manhood, which is an intersubjective (sexual) object between self and other. This systematic literature review examined the clinical utility of the construct of self‐disgust in understanding mental distress. Specifically, the review assessed whether there is a shared conceptual definition of self‐disgust, the face and construct validity of the quantitative assessment measures of self‐disgust, and the predictive validity of self‐disgust in formulating the development of a range of psychological difficulties. A systematic database search supplemented by manual searches of references and citations identified 31 relevant papers (27 quantitative, 3 qualitative, and 1 mixed). Analysis of qualitative papers indicated a number of shared features in the definition of self‐disgust, including a visceral sense of self‐elicited nausea accompanied by social withdrawal and attempts at cleansing or suppressing aspects of the self. Quantitative assessment measures appeared to capture these dimensions and evidenced good psychometric properties, although some measures may have only partially captured the full self‐disgust construct. Strong relationships were observed between self‐disgust and a range of mental health presentations, in particular, depression, body‐image difficulties, and trauma‐related difficulties. However, these relationships are smaller when the effects of other negative self‐referential emotions were controlled, and stronger conclusions about the predictive validity of self‐disgust are limited by the cross‐sectional nature of many of the studies. Objective: Body image concerns warrant attention among women who have undergone treatment for breast cancer, due to their significant consequences for psychological and physical health, and interpersonal relationships. This paper systematically reviews the effectiveness of interventions on body image outcomes among this group, in order to inform health care provision and strategic directions for research.Methods: Fourteen electronic databases were searched for articles published between 1992 and 2017 that evaluated interventions with women who had undergone treatment for breast cancer in controlled trials with at least one body image measure. Data were extracted and studies were assessed for their methodological quality using the Cochrane Collaboration tool for assessing risk of bias.Results: Twenty-one articles evaluating 26 interventions met inclusion criteria. Nine interventions significantly improved body image at either post-test or follow-up (ds = 0.15-1.43), with none reporting sustained effects across all time points. Effective interventions comprised psychotherapy, psychoeducation, or physical activity, were delivered at different treatment stages and mostly adopted a multisession, face-to-face, group format. However, only 4 interventions were evaluated within methodologically rigorous studies and are therefore recommended for use by health professionals aiming to improve the body image of women at different stages of treatment for breast cancer.Conclusions: To advance the field, we recommend a less biomedical disease- and treatment-focused approach to interventions, and instead a more biopsychosocial theoretical approach targeting broader modifiable psychosocial influences upon body image. Neuroscience of dance is an emerging field with important applications related to health and well‐being, as dance has shown potential to foster adaptive neuroplasticity and is increasingly popular as a therapeutic activity or adjunct therapy for people living with conditions such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases. However, the multimodal nature of dance presents challenges to researchers aiming to identify mechanisms involved when dance is used to combat neurodegeneration or support healthy ageing. Requiring simultaneous engagement of motor and cognitive domains, dancing includes coordination of systems involved in timing, memory and spatial learning. Studies on dance to this point rely primarily on assessments of brain dynamics and structure through pre/post‐tests or studies on expertise, as traditional brain imaging modalities restrict participant movement to avoid movement‐related artefacts. In this paper, we describe the process of designing and implementing a study that uses mobile brain/body imaging (MoBI) to investigate real‐time changes in brain dynamics and behaviour during the process of learning and performing a novel dance choreography. We show the potential for new insights to emerge from the coordinated collection of movement and brain‐based data, and the implications of these in an emerging field whose medium is motion. Objectives: Brain tumors are the most common and fatal of all solid tumors for children and adolescents; those who survive live with long‐term physical and emotional consequences, as do their families. We aimed to synthesize relevant qualitative evidence on families' experiences and psychosocial service needs across the lifespan to identify gaps in care delivery and research. Methods: Searches were conducted in Medline, CINAHL, PsycInfo, Embase, and Web of Science. Identified papers were assessed with the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Tool. Data were extracted into NVivo12 and analyzed by qualitative description and, where appropriate, thematic analysis. Results: The search yielded 628 papers, of which 40 (33 studies) were eligible (6%). Although the methodological quality of the papers was low, we identified concerns that were consistently reported over time and from different perspectives. Individual family members had varying psychosocial needs to be addressed within healthcare, schooling, and public policy. These include for survivor's mental health (particularly for body image), and to the disproportionate biopsychosocial burden faced by mother‐caregivers. Conclusions: Addressing the biological aspects of brain tumor cannot be our only focus. We have an obligation to provide services that meet the needs of families across diagnosis, treatment, survivorship, palliative care, and bereavement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: Elective stoma formation has a negative effect on patient quality of life (QoL), with a potential detrimental impact on body image, confidence and social functioning being shown previously. However, the impact of emergency stoma formation on QoL has been explored less frequently. This systematic review aims to synthesize all available literature exploring QoL via patient‐reported outcome measures. Methods: A search strategy was implemented on 24 November 2022 across Embase, MEDLINE, PsycInfo and the Cochrane Library database after registration on PROSPERO (CRD42022370606). Studies were included if they used a standardized patient‐reported outcome measure, had more than five emergency stoma patients, age > 18 years and were fully published in English. Two of three independent researchers screened articles, extracted data and performed quality assessment using the Newcastle−Ottawa Scale and the Cochrane risk of bias tool. Results: In all, 1775 articles were screened, with 16 included in the systematic review. This included 1868 emergency stoma patients (men:women 0.53; median age 64.6 years) followed up for a median of 12 months. Patients who had a Hartmann's procedure for perforated diverticulitis had poorer QoL than those who underwent primary anastomosis. There was a negligible difference in QoL between those who had a colonic stent for obstructing colorectal cancer compared with those who underwent emergency stoma formation. Female sex, end stoma formation and ileostomy formation were all identified as risk factors for poorer QoL. Conclusion: Patients undergoing emergency stoma surgery have marginally poorer QoL compared with those undergoing similar procedures without stoma formation. Summary: This study systematically identified the effects of exercise on multiple psychological outcomes among adults with overweight/obesity, also assessing whether these effects differed across exercise types, genders, age, and body mass index (BMI) categories. Pubmed, Web of Science, PsychInfo, and SportDiscus were searched up to October 2019 for peer‐reviewed papers assessing exercise training effects on psychosocial outcomes in adults with overweight/obesity. Thirty‐six articles, 32 randomized controlled trials (RCTs), were included in this review. Most interventions were supervised (65%), ranging between 6 and 76 weeks (median = 12). Sixteen psychological outcomes were studied. Exercise induced positive changes in quality of life but did not reduce depression. Large effect sizes were observed on quality of life's physical component, but exercise was also able to improve vitality and mental health. Most psychological outcomes (e.g., body image, anxiety, and perceived stress) are poorly studied, evidencing either conflicting or null exercise effects. Exercise self‐efficacy and autonomous motivations were also consistently improved. Exercise types and gender seem to moderate exercise psychological effects. Exercise training programs might lead to positive changes in some psychological outcomes, especially in quality of life, in adults with overweight and obesity, but more studies, with greater systematization in program characteristics, and longer follow‐ups are still required to allow more solid conclusions. The article is a response to a previous paper on the association between epidural labor analgesia and postpartum depression. The authors collected demographic and questionnaire data before delivery and found no significant differences in pain and psychological vulnerabilities between patients who received epidural analgesia and those who did not. However, they agree that other factors such as social support and self-efficacy should be explored to determine their relevance in the relationship between epidural analgesia and postpartum depression. The authors also discuss the use of the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) as a screening tool and report no serious adverse events associated with epidural analgesia. Purpose: Facial palsy is a condition which can lead to significant changes in facial function and appearance. People with facial palsy often report psychosocial difficulties, including withdrawal from social activities, anxiety, negative body image, and low mood. This paper aimed to review all published research investigating the psychosocial impact of facial palsy on adults., Methods: A systematic search of MEDLINE, CINAHL, EMBASE, PsycINFO, and AMED databases was performed. The quality of included studies was assessed, and data were extracted with regard to characteristics of participants; study methodology and design; outcome measures used; and psychosocial outcomes., Results: Twenty-seven studies met inclusion criteria. A high proportion of people with facial palsy reported clinically significant levels of anxiety and depression, with greater difficulties typically reported by females, compared to males. Other difficulties consistently reported include low quality of life, poor social function, and high levels of appearance-related distress. Objective severity of facial palsy was consistently shown to not be associated with anxiety or depression, with psychological factors instead likely mediating the relationship between the severity of facial palsy and psychosocial well-being., Conclusions: Irrespective of objective symptom severity, facial palsy has the potential to have a significant impact on psychosocial well-being and quality of life. Purpose: As a majority of skin cancer cases are behaviourally preventable, it is crucial to develop effective strategies to reduce UV exposure. Health-focused interventions have not proved to be sufficiently effective, and it has been suggested that people might be more susceptible to information about the negative effects of the sun on their appearance.Method: This systematic review of 30 separate papers, reporting 33 individual studies published between 2005 and 2017, assesses the overall effectiveness of appearance interventions on participants' UV exposure and sun protection behaviour.Results: Appearance-based interventions have positive effects on sun exposure and sun protection, immediately after the intervention as well as up to 12 months afterwards. The meta-analysis found a medium effect size on sun protection intentions for interventions which combined UV photography and photoageing information: r+  = .424; k = 3, N = 319, CI = 0.279-0.568, p = .023.Conclusions: This review provides a current perspective on the effectiveness of appearance-based interventions to reduce UV exposure, and also highlights methodological issues. It recommends that practitioners administer a UV photo intervention in combination with photoageing information to reduce UV exposure. Furthermore, the review specifically recommends that future research focuses on the use of theoretical constructs to enhance photoageing information and is conducted with older participants and in countries where people have less opportunity for sun exposure. Statement of contribution What is already known on this subject? Appearance-focused interventions may in some cases be more effective than health-focused interventions in reducing UV exposure, as the underlying motivations for tanning are associated with appearance concerns. Previous reviews and meta-analyses have indicated that appearance-focused interventions such as photoageing and UV photo are associated with positive effects in reducing UV exposure and/or increasing sun protection. Previous reviews identified methodological issues with research on this topic, which included limited a priori power calculations and a general lack of long-term follow-ups. What does this study add? This review concludes that photoageing information in combination with UV photo is associated with a medium positive effect size on sun protection intentions. Photoageing can be manipulated according to theoretical constructs (e.g., Theory of Alternative Behaviours), which may contribute to its effectiveness. Issues such as homogeneity of settings and participants and limited a priori power calculations in the included studies have been identified. This review specifically recommends that future research is conducted in locations with less overall sun exposure, and with a more diverse participant range (e.g., more males and older participants). Simon Williams has provided an interesting and informative rejoinder to the journal "Sociology of Health and Illness." Authors believe that Williams has raised some significant criticisms of the paper, and they will address these. Williams's first point is that what authors wrote was not very new. Agreed. It is certainly true that the concepts of self and identity, which were the central theoretical planks in their argument, are to be found in the work of other authors. Neither of the authors has ever sought to conceal their admiration for the work of other authors, and they admit happily to the influence of these writers on their own thinking about chronic illness. Following his critique of authors' paper Williams presents the concept of body image as a theoretical alternative which he suggests is complementary to their own position. Authors do not agree, because of the theoretical problems that the concept of body image generates for them. Over many years body image has become established in the lexicon of pop-psychology. It is now frequently invoked, along with its close cousin--body language, as a useful way of describing social behaviour and people's feelings about their own bodies amidst this social behaviour.

Objectives: There is no consensus as to whether people with advanced dementia can create a narrative identity. It is most often thought to be disturbed due to autobiographical memory disorders. In this paper, we examined how people with advanced dementia constructed their narrative identities in relation to their professional experience. Methods: This qualitative study used data obtained from 8 semi‐structured interviews. The interviewees were people with advanced dementia aged between 66 and 89 years. We analyzed the dataset based on the textual‐oriented discourse analysis. Results: The study participants created narrative identities. Their narrative identities were constructed within residual professional discourses learned during their lifespan. These discourses blended their narrative identities into coherent stories about who they are now, offered languages to describe current experiences, and emphasized important values for their self‐image. The participants built narrative identities by referring to the past and imagining a better present with the omission of the future. The past was valued positively and was a source of positive nostalgia. Projections of a better present served to reveal their needs and assess ways to meet them. Conclusions: We argue that people with advanced dementia can create complex and coherent narrative identities. They are constructed around discourses and not only using autobiographical memories. Encouraging them to create narrative identities in the dialogue can be a simple therapeutic method by which they can maintain a sense of self‐cohesion and belonging to the world. This paper describes an innovative approach combining a content analysis of commentary and images on a Facebook page with a thematic analysis of the subjective experience expressed in interviews of those impacted by the text and images. Interview participants were asked about their perceptions of the representation of the muscularity‐focused identity on social media, including the specific Facebook page. Content analysis of the Facebook page comments showed that very muscular male images attracted predominantly negative feedback from the public, a trend supported by the interview participants. Thematic analysis of the interviews indicated that a negative social media representation and commentary can affect young men's self‐esteem and increase body concern. Some men represented on the Page found it humorous, which could serve as a form of bonding for the muscularity‐focused online community. Other young men acknowledged how harmful such negative feedback can be on their self‐evaluations and body image, consistent with the sociocultural framework whereby negative representations can lead to increased body dissatisfaction. Precise and controllable rotation of small biological samples is essential to many biological and medical applications. This paper reports, an easy‐to‐use microfluidic device to rotate single nematode worm Caenorhabditis elegans in a reliable and controllable fashion, which was enabled by on‐chip generation of stable microscale vortices inside a worm‐loaded microchannel by fluidic shear stress. To test the capability of the proposed device, single worms were successfully rotated in continuous and stepwise modes. Using this device, clear visualization of all dopaminergic neurons in the head of a C. elegans was demonstrated by capturing fluorescence images of the worm body at several rotational angles. Multiple perspectives of individual neurons of a multi‐color fluorescent transgenic worm were also obtained at high resolution using laser‐scanning confocal microscopy. The results show that this microfluidic rotation device provides a simple solution to overcoming limitations of confocal microscopy when imaging relatively thick tissue samples such as an adult C. elegans, and is compatible with multiple fluorescent proteins with different spectral properties. The current paper explores how male Instagram users' (MIU) perceptions of body image and behavior are affected by the exposure to fitness hashtags, and the consequences on their wellbeing. For this purpose, in‐depth interviews were conducted with #fitfam MIU with different levels of engagement. Low‐engagement MIU with low body‐esteem long for the "instabod" and engage in body transformation efforts to follow the fitness trend popularized by Instagram, to emulate peers and Instagram celebrities, to gain popularity and to appear successful. Instagram community members use positive and negative reinforcements to strengthen body internalization. The body transformation effort motivates low‐engagement MIU to engage more, which has various effects on wellbeing: on one side, they feel anxious and in competition with other peers which often leads to muscle dysmorphia symptoms; on the other side, they feel more masculine with higher self‐confidence, they have higher motivation to stay fit and to eat healthily. Purpose: Body composition is known to be associated with many diseases including diabetes, cancers, and cardiovascular diseases. In this paper, we developed a fully automatic body tissue decomposition procedure to segment three major compartments that are related to body composition analysis — subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT), visceral adipose tissue (VAT), and muscle. Three additional compartments — the ventral cavity, lung, and bones — were also segmented during the segmentation process to assist segmentation of the major compartments. Methods: A convolutional neural network (CNN) model with densely connected layers was developed to perform ventral cavity segmentation. An image processing workflow was developed to segment the ventral cavity in any patient's computed tomography (CT) using the CNN model, then further segment the body tissue into multiple compartments using hysteresis thresholding followed by morphological operations. It is important to segment ventral cavity firstly to allow accurate separation of compartments with similar Hounsfield unit (HU) inside and outside the ventral cavity. Results: The ventral cavity segmentation CNN model was trained and tested with manually labeled ventral cavities in 60 CTs. Dice scores (mean ± standard deviation) for ventral cavity segmentation were 0.966 ± 0.012. Tested on CT datasets with intravenous (IV) and oral contrast, the Dice scores were 0.96 ± 0.02, 0.94 ± 0.06, 0.96 ± 0.04, 0.95 ± 0.04, and 0.99 ± 0.01 for bone, VAT, SAT, muscle, and lung, respectively. The respective Dice scores were 0.97 ± 0.02, 0.94 ± 0.07, 0.93 ± 0.06, 0.91 ± 0.04, and 0.99 ± 0.01 for non‐contrast CT datasets. Conclusion: A body tissue decomposition procedure was developed to automatically segment multiple compartments of the ventral body. Aim. This paper is a report of a review examining the variables that predispose individuals to significant psychological maladjustment following burn injury. Background. The psychological sequelae of burn injury are well documented; however, the variables that influence individuals' adjustment following burn injury lack consideration. Data sources. MEDLINE, Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health, and Psychological Abstracts were searched using the keywords burn injury, psychological, psychosocial, rehabilitation, premorbid psychopathology, adjustment, reintegration, body image, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, coping. Other sources were found from a manual search of nursing, medical and psychological literature and references of identified and related papers. The search strategy was limited to English-language research published between 1997 and 2008. Review methods. An integrative review of the studies was conducted over a 6-month time period during 2007-2008. Results. Burn patients are a heterogeneous group and typically have comorbidities. While preburn personality and coping strategies can influence long-term psychological adjustment, the relationship between postburn adjustment and burn size and severity, and gender are poorly understood. Much of the literature focuses on the prevalence of psychological maladjustment rather than on identifying variables that influence psychological adjustment. Conclusion. The diversity and complexity that characterize burn patients lead to unique adjustment difficulties. Title. Bodily change following faecal stoma formation: qualitative interpretive synthesis.Aim. This paper is a report of a literature review conducted to answer the question 'How has the experience of bodily change following stoma formation been explored and interpreted through existing qualitative research?'.Background. A faecal stoma alters the function, appearance and sensation of the body. Quantitative research highlights the importance of bodily change following stoma formation but is limited in being able to explore what this experience means to ostomists. Qualitative research can identify ways in which ostomists experience their changed body but a conceptual framework of their experience drawn from qualitative findings which can inform patient-centred care has not yet been identified.Method. The Amed, ASSIA, CINAHL, Embase, Medline and Psycinfo databases were searched from inception to April 2009 using predefined inclusion criteria. Of 144 papers identified, 11 were selected for review. An interpretive review methodology for qualitative research synthesis was employed. Findings. Three broad themes of bodily experience following stoma formation were identified: loss of embodied wholeness, awareness of a disrupted lived body and disrupted bodily confidence. These highlight the impact of the experience of living with a stoma on the embodied self and the ostomist's embodiment within their lifeworld.Conclusion. A loss of embodied wholeness which underpins the experience of stoma formation can be represented through awareness of the disrupted lived body and impact on the lifeworld. Findings suggest the need for further research to identify a comprehensive conceptualization of bodily change, which can more closely match healthcare service to individual patient need. It is widely acknowledged that inpatient treatment for anorexia nervosa is largely unsuccessful, with many patients dropping out of treatment or having repeated, failed admissions. Autobiographical and feminist accounts of anorexia suggest that inpatient regimes are reductionist because they focus largely on weight gain. Being fattened up without any attention to the psychic aspects of anorexia can create an ambivalent, uncomfortable body. The paper is based on interviews with 25 adolescent girls1 with a medical diagnosis of anorexia nervosa2 and offers one reading of how girls negotiate hospitalization. Informed by poststructural theory, the transcripts are analysed using a discourse analytic approach to scrutinize the ways in which girls constructed treatment regimes and medical discourses. The focus is two-fold: girls' engagement with food in the hospital and the dissonance between clinical and social measures of physicality. Objective: It is our sincere pleasure to introduce a special issue of the International Journal of Eating Disorders focused on eating disorders and related symptoms in male populations. Method: Contributions focused on three main themes among male populations: (a) the nature of eating disorder symptoms and recovery; (b) long‐term outcomes following eating disorders treatment; and (c) muscularity‐oriented symptoms of eating pathology. Results: The contributions to this special issue highlight the importance of better understanding how eating disorder symptoms manifest, may be maintained, and respond to treatment among male populations. Findings across the articles demonstrate some similarities between male and female samples with respect to core eating disorder symptoms, as well as important differences, particularly with respect to muscularity‐oriented disordered eating. Findings related to treatment outcome also highlight the suboptimal long‐term remission rates and elevated mortality among male inpatients with eating disorders. The psychoanalytic treatment of psychotic patients is often difficult through a sole reliance on associative speech. Psychotic subjects might not be apt at pursuing the course of regression induced by associative speech or this regression might lead them to psychic areas where de‐symbolization is so extensive that only delusion or dissociation are available to them. A medium has often been suggested so that the representation of the drive and the formalization of infantile sexuality may unfold more safely and efficiently. Two modalities of use of a malleable medium will be considered in this paper: Gisela Pankow's clay modelling and psychoanalytic psychodrama as it has developed in France, Belgium and Switzerland since the end of the 1950s. According to objectification theory (Fredrickson & Roberts, 1997), being treated as an object leads women to engage in self‐objectification, which in turn increases body surveillance and body shame as well as impairs mental health. However, very little is known about what factors could act as buffers against the detrimental consequences of self‐objectification. This paper seeks to understand the role of self‐compassion (the ability to kindly accept oneself or show self‐directed kindness while suffering) in the perception that women have of their own bodies. Results indicate that self‐compassion moderated the effect of body surveillance on depression and happiness separately among women. More specifically, for women low in self‐compassion, body surveillance was negatively associated with happiness, which was explained by increased depression. In sum, our results indicate that self‐compassion protects against the detrimental consequences of body surveillance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
