Aim: Surf zones are crucial nursery habitats for the early life stages of fish species associated with typical coastal ecosystems. However, little is known about the temporal patterns and drivers of fish assemblages in tropical surf zones. This study aimed to assess the (1) main changes in fish community structure throughout 1 year, (2) seasonal dynamic patterns in fish assemblages, and (3) key factors influencing fish assemblages in the tropical surf zones. Location: Gaolong Bay, Wenchang City, Hainan Island, China. Methods: Fish sampling was conducted monthly from June 2021 to May 2022 using a beach seine net. Fish species were identified using both morphological and molecular analyses. Kruskal–Wallis test, analysis of similarity, non‐metric multidimensional scaling analysis, and similarity percentage analysis were used to investigate the temporal fish assemblage patterns. Generalised additive models and canonical correspondence analysis were used to assess how environmental variables influence fish assemblages. Results: We identified 83 fish species, which were grouped into three ecotypes based on their primary habitat: coral reef‐seagrass‐associated species (CS) (35), mangrove‐estuarine‐associated species (ME) (30), and common coastal‐estuarine‐associated species (CE) (18). Most captured individuals were juveniles, and fish abundance and diversity were highest in May. Most CS species were abundant between March and May. ME and most CE species were dominant from June to August, and Mugilidae (CE) was abundant between October and February. Furthermore, surf fish assemblages were substantially influenced by tidal level, water temperature, conductivity, pH, turbidity, and dissolved oxygen. Conclusions: Juvenile fish were abundant in May and fish species with three ecotypes alternate in the surf zones throughout the year. Counter to much current thinking, March maybe the spawn peak of most fish species in the studied area, and we suggest that the fishing ban period could start from March instead of May in the inshore areas of Hainan Island. Sympathetic overactivation is one of the main contributors to development and progress of hypertension. Renal denervation (RDN) has been evidenced by series of clinical trials for its efficacy and safety to treat overactivated sympathetic nervous system induced diseases. However, the results were inconsistent and not all patients benefited from RDN. Appropriate patient selection and intraoperative factors to improve the efficacy of RDN need to be solved urgently. Over the decade, research studies on the correlations between indicators and the antihypertensive effects have been conducted and made a fairly well progress. Herein, we comprehensively reviewed the research studies on how to make RDN more predictable or improve the efficacy of RDN and summarized these potential indicators or devices which might be applied in clinical settings. Brassica carinata is a non‐food, low‐carbon, none‐to‐low indirect land‐use change impact oilseed feedstock grown for sustainable biofuels, bioproducts, and high protein seed meal. Understanding carinata growth and development is critical to the development of best management practices for maximum productivity and profitability of double‐cropped farming systems. Field experiments were conducted during 2017–2018 (Year 1) and 2018–2019 (Year 2) winter–spring growing seasons in Quincy, Florida, to quantify the total aboveground dry matter accumulation (TDM), allocation, growth, nutrient uptake, and seed quality. The two carinata cultivars Avanza 641 and AX17012 accumulated 10826 and 9343 kg TDM ha−1 in Year 1 and 9655 and 10,642 kg TDM ha−1 in Year 2, respectively, at harvest maturity. The proportion of DM in the vegetative parts such as leaves and stems decreased, and the DM in reproductive structures such as silique walls and seeds increased with maturity. Seed yield (SY) was similar between cultivars but differed between years with Year 1 (2732 kg ha−1), producing 29% greater SY than Year 2 (1929 kg ha−1). Carinata primary stem has 17–20 leaf nodes, with 75%–88% of the axillary meristems producing primary and secondary branches. Crop growth rate (CGR) increased from vegetative to pod development for both cultivars in Year 1, while in Year 2, AX17012 and Avanza 641 attained maximum CGR at the pod development and bolting/flowering stages, respectively. Maximum seasonal nutrient uptake in leaves, stems, and siliques generally occurred in the early, mid, and late season, respectively, in both years. Seed weight, oil, monounsaturated fatty acids, C18:3, C20:1, and C22:1 concentrations increased with plant age, whereas protein, glucosinolate, polyunsaturated fatty acids, saturated fatty acids, C18:1, and C18:2 concentrations decreased with plant maturity. Polarisation current profile varies non‐linearly with a magnitude of charging voltage. This implies performance parameters obtained from polarisation–depolarisation current and those measured using specialised equipment cannot always be compared. Results reported in this study suggested that the non‐linearity in insulation response can be explained in terms of the interaction between space charge and insulation conductivity. The influence of using different charging voltages and its effect on performance parameter calculation is investigated in this study with the help of laboratory samples. It is shown in this study that with the help of a trained artificial neural network, it is possible to identify the charging voltage at which insulation response exhibits minimum non‐linearity. To test the accuracy of the proposed method performance parameters measured using commercial equipment are compared with those calculated from the polarisation current profile. In this study, results of polarisation and depolarisation currents measured on an insulating liquid are presented. The goal is to contribute to a better understanding of mechanisms occurring at the metal–liquid contact. Electrodes of different metallic nature are associated with the same mineral oil, the metal/liquid/metal structure is submitted to DC voltages and the transient current is recorded with a high sensitive electrometer. The current versus time feature shows that the conduction process is in good compliance with the metal work function rather than with its electric conductivity. The current versus field characteristics indicate a predominance of the ohmic behaviour for the low fields. The space charge limited conduction regime appears as soon as the electrical constraint exceeds ∼1 MV/m, which corresponds to 10% of the breakdown voltage. Background Cervical artery dissection (CeAD) is a frequent manifestation of fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD). However, risk factors for CeAD are unknown. We investigated factors associated with CeAD in the ARCADIA (Assessment of Renal and Cervical Artery Dysplasia) registry. Methods and Results The ARCADIA registry includes women or men aged ≥18 years, with a diagnosis of renal, cervical, or intracranial artery FMD, who were prospectively recruited at 16 university hospitals in France and Belgium. Diagnosis of acute or past CeAD at inclusion was established on imaging according to standard diagnostic criteria. Associations between potential determinants and CeAD were assessed by logistic regression analyses. Among 469 patients (75 men) with FMD, 65 (13.9%) had CeAD. Patients with CeAD were younger, more likely to be men, have a history of migraine, and less likely to have a history of hypertension than patients without CeAD. In the multivariable analysis, male sex (odds ratio [OR], 2.66; 95% CI, 1.34-5.25), history of migraine (OR, 1.90; 95% CI, 1.06-3.39), age ≥50 years (OR, 0.41; 95% CI, 0.23-0.73), history of hypertension (OR, 0.35; 95% CI, 0.20-0.64), and involvement of ≥3 vascular beds (OR, 2.49; 95% CI, 1.15-5.40) were significantly associated with CeAD. To validate the association between CeAD and sex, we performed a systematic review. We collected additional data on sex from 2 published studies and unpublished data from the US Registry for Fibromuscular Dysplasia and the European/International FMD Registry. In the pooled analysis (289 CeAD, 1933 patients), male sex was significantly associated with CeAD (OR, 2.04; 95% CI, 1.41-2.95; I 2 =0%). Conclusions In patients with FMD, male sex and multisite involvement are associated with CeAD, in addition to other previously known risk factors. Many dielectric thin films for energy storage capacitors fail by thermal breakdown events under high-field drive conditions. The lifetime of the device can be improved under conditions where the current path within the defect regions in dielectrics is eliminated. Self-healing electrodes were developed by depositing a manganese dioxide (MnO2) thin film between the glass substrate and an aluminum film. For this purpose, thin films of MnO2 on boroaluminosilicate glass were fabricated via chemical solution deposition and heat-treated at temperatures in the range 500°C-900°C. The α-MnO2 structure was stabilized by Ba2+ insertion to form the hollandite structure. The phase transition temperature of α-MnO2 to Mn2O3 is strongly dependent on the Ba concentration, with transition temperatures of 600°C and 675°C with Ba concentrations of [Ba]/[Mn] = 0.04 and 0.1, respectively. The electrical resistivity increased from 4.5 Ω·cm for MnO2 to 105 Ω·cm for Mn2O3. Both dielectric breakdown strength and the associated cleared aluminum electrode area increased with an MnO2 interlayer between Al electrodes and the borosilicate glass. The enhancement in dielectric strength was related with self-healing. The associated redox reaction between MnO2 and Mn2O3 was also proved by RAMAN spectroscopy following dielectric breakdown. Pre-evacuated Exetainers are commonly used as measurement vials for the determination of methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) concentrations in liquid and gaseous samples from aquatic environments. The impact of residual air in these Exetainers on measurement accuracy is assessed. Residual air pressure in commercially available, pre-evacuated Exetainers varied between 0.071 ± 0.008 atm and 0.180 ± 0.031 atm in examined batches. This background contamination can lead to large errors when determining dissolved and gaseous CH4 and N2O concentrations particularly at low concentrations. A method for Exetainer pretreatment is suggested and verified, to reduce the residual CH4 and N2O. Vials are flushed (needle 30 G × 0.5″, 0.3 mm) with nitrogen gas (N2) for 5 min, which reduces the background CH4 and N2O concentrations to 0.092 ± 0.008 ppm and 0.016 ± 0.001 ppm, respectively, approximately 3-4% of their respective concentrations in air. To avoid an alteration of sample concentration by variable residual gas levels left during a pre-evacuation step, liquid and gaseous samples are injected into the N2 filled Exetainers. For gaseous samples where large volumes of gas are available, Exetainers can alternatively be flushed with 100 mL of sampling gas. For gaseous samples, measured CH4 and N2O concentrations of standard gases were statistically identical to their known concentrations. For liquid samples, measured CH4 and N2O concentrations of liquid standard dilution series showed strong linear correlations with theoretically calculated concentrations (slope CH4: 1.04, slope N2O: 1.12). DNA barcoding was used to investigate dietary habits and prey selection in members of the African-endemic family Distichodontidae noteworthy for displaying highly specialized ectoparasitic fin-eating behaviors (pterygophagy). Fin fragments recovered from the stomachs of representatives of three putatively pterygophagous distichodontid genera ( Phago, Eugnathichthys, and Ichthyborus) were sequenced for the mitochondrial gene co1. DNA barcodes ( co1 sequences) were then used to identify prey items in order to determine whether pterygophagous distichodontids are opportunistic generalists or strict specialists with regard to prey selection and, whether as previously proposed, aggressive mimicry is used as a strategy for successful pterygophagy. Our findings do not support the hypothesis of aggressive mimicry suggesting instead that, despite the possession of highly specialized trophic anatomies, fin-eating distichodontids are opportunistic generalists, preying on fishes from a wide phylogenetic spectrum and to the extent of engaging in cannibalism. This study demonstrates how DNA barcoding can be used to shed light on evolutionary and ecological aspects of highly specialized ectoparasitic fin-eating behaviors by enabling the identification of prey species from small pieces of fins found in fish stomachs. Aims Although the focus of therapeutic intervention has been on neurohormonal pathways thought to be harmful in heart failure (HF), such as the renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system (RAAS), potentially beneficial counter-regulatory systems are also active in HF. These promote vasodilatation and natriuresis, inhibit abnormal growth, suppress the RAAS and sympathetic nervous system, and augment parasympathetic activity. The best understood of these mediators are the natriuretic peptides which are metabolized by the enzyme neprilysin. LCZ696 belongs to a new class of drugs, the angiotensin receptor neprilysin inhibitors (ARNIs), which both block the RAAS and augment natriuretic peptides. Methods Patients with chronic HF, NYHA class II–IV symptoms, an elevated plasma BNP or NT-proBNP level, and an LVEF of ≤40% were enrolled in the Prospective comparison of ARNI with ACEI to Determine Impact on Global Mortailty and morbidity in Heart Failure trial (PARADIGM-HF). Patients entered a single-blind enalapril run-in period (titrated to 10 mg b.i.d.), followed by an LCZ696 run-in period (100 mg titrated to 200 mg b.i.d.). A total of 8436 patients tolerating both periods were randomized 1:1 to either enalapril 10 mg b.i.d. or LCZ696 200 mg b.i.d. The primary outcome is the composite of cardiovascular death or HF hospitalization, although the trial is powered to detect a 15% relative risk reduction in cardiovascular death. Perspectives PARADIGM-HF will determine the place of the ARNI LCZ696 as an alternative to enalapril in patients with systolic HF. Background. Subclinical hypothyroidism (SH) predominantly affects women. The necessity of treatment in SH is controversial. Objective. We aimed to investigate the response of diastolic dysfunction to thyroid hormone replacement therapy (THRT) in women. Methods and Results. Twenty-two female subjects with SH and 20 euthyroid female controls were enrolled. Baseline and follow-up biochemical, hormonal, and echocardiographic evaluations were performed. Repeat echocardiograms were performed three months after the achievement of a euthyroid status with THRT. Mean baseline myocardial performance index (MPI) was 0.27±0.08 in the SH group, and 0.22±0.06 in the control group (P = 0.03).MPI did not change significantly after THRT. Pulsedwave Doppler findings were not different among the groups. However, tissue Doppler-derived mitral annular E' velocities were significantly lower in the SH group. A moderate but significant improvement was observed in E' velocities after THRT (13.2±3.87 versus 14.53 ± 2.75, P = 0.04). We also observed left ventricular concentric remodeling in SH patients which was reversible with THRT. Conclusions. Tissue Doppler echocardiography may be a useful tool for monitoring the response of diastolic dysfunction to thyroid hormone replacement therapy in patients with SH. Recent research has revealed roles for the peroxisome proliferator activated receptor (PPAR) family of transcription factors in blood pressure regulation, expanding the possible therapeutic use of PPAR ligands. PPARα and PPARγ modulate the renin-angiotensin- aldosterone system (RAAS), a major regulator of systemic blood pressure and interstitial fluid volume by transcriptional control of renin, angiotensinogen, angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) and angiotensin II receptor 1 (AT-R1). Blockade of RAAS is an important therapeutic target in hypertension management and attenuates microvascular damage, glomerular inflammation and left ventricular hypertrophy in hypertensive patients and also show antidiabetic effects. The mechanisms underlying the benefits of RAAS inhibition appear to involve PPARγ-regulated pathways. This review summarizes current knowledge on the role of PPARs in the transcriptional control of the RAAS and the possible use of PPAR ligands in the treatment of RAAS dependent hypertension. Contents Bioenergy from plants, particularly from perennial grasses and trees, could make a substantial contribution to alleviation of global problems in climate change and energy security if high yields can be sustained. Here, yield traits in a range of key bioenergy crops are reviewed, from which several targets for future improvement can be identified. Some are already the focus of genetically modified (GM) and non-GM approaches. However, the efficient growth strategies of perennial bioenergy crops rely on newly assimilated and recycled carbon and remobilized nitrogen in a continually shifting balance between sources and sinks. This balance is affected by biotic (e.g. pest, disease) and abiotic (e.g. drought) stresses. Future research should focus on three main challenges: changing (photo)thermal time sensitivity to lengthen the growing season without risking frost damage or limiting remobilization of nutritional elements following senescence; increasing aboveground biomass without depleting belowground reserves required for next year's growth and thus without increasing the requirement for nutrient applications; and increasing aboveground biomass without increasing water use. Objective: An algorithm for the detection of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), based on the presence of dyspnea and the findings of Doppler echocardiographic evaluation of the velocity of tricuspid regurgitation (VTR) and right-sided heart catheterization (RHC), which was applied in a large multicenter systemic sclerosis (SSc) population, estimated the prevalence of PAH to be 7.85%. The aim of this observational study was to investigate the incidence of PAH and pulmonary hypertension (PH) during a 3-year followup of patients from the same cohort (the ItinérAIR-Sclérodermie Study)., Methods: Patients with SSc and without evidence of PAH underwent evaluation for dyspnea and VTR at study entry and during subsequent visits. Patients in whom PAH was suspected because of a VTR of 2.8-3.0 meters/second and unexplained dyspnea or a VTR of >3.0 meters/second underwent RHC to confirm the diagnosis., Results: A total of 384 patients were followed up for a mean+/-SD of 41.03+/-5.66 months (median 40.92 months). At baseline, 86.7% of the patients were women, and the mean+/-SD age of the patients was 53.1+/-12.0 years. The mean+/-SD duration of SSc at study entry was 8.7+/-7.6 years. After RHC, PAH was diagnosed in 8 patients, postcapillary PH in 8 patients, and PH associated with severe pulmonary fibrosis in 2 patients. The incidence of PAH was estimated to be 0.61 cases per 100 patient-years. Two patients who exhibited a mean pulmonary artery pressure of 20-25 mm Hg at baseline subsequently developed PAH., Conclusion: The estimated incidence of PAH among patients with SSc was 0.61 cases per 100 patient-years. The high incidence of postcapillary PH highlights the value of RHC in investigating suspected PAH.
