Background: Limited research concerning existing inequities in mental health care and support services in the United Kingdom captures perceptions and lived experiences of the significantly underrepresented Muslim population. Methods: Underpinned by social constructivist theory, we used consultation to facilitate public and patient involvement and engagement (PPIE) to identify inequities in mental health care and support experienced by Muslims from minoritised ethnic communities living in deprived areas in Liverpool, UK. The rationale was to (a) better inform standards and policies in healthcare and (b) provide a psychologically safe space to members of the Muslim community to share perceptions and experiences of mental health care and support services. To ensure trustworthiness of the data, member checking was adopted. This paper describes the procedure to achieving this consultation, including our recruitment strategy, data collection and analysis as well as key findings. Findings: Twenty‐seven consultees attended the women's consultation and eight consultees attended the men's consultation. Consultees were from Yemeni, Somali, Sudanese, Egyptian, Algerian, Pakistani and Moroccan communities and share the Islamic faith. Four key interlinked themes were identified from consultees' narratives: (1) broken cycle of trust; (2) an overmedicalised model of care; (3) community mental health prevention initiatives; and (4) culturally conscious training and education. Conclusions: The Muslim population has identified numerous barriers to accessing mental health support and there is a need to resource activities that would aid deeper understanding of mental health support needs through continuous and meaningful community initiatives. This would afford mental health practitioners and organisations opportunities for developing realistic anti‐racism strategies, effectively adopting social prescription, strengthening partnerships and collaborations aimed at supporting delivery of evidence‐based mental health care provisions to tackle mental health inequities. The article profiles two men who were active participants in extremist Islamist groups in Great Britain and then reversed course, leaving the groups and speaking out publicly against Islamism. The author argues that such individuals have important insights to the development of U.S. and Western anti-terrorism policy. Pakistani-British Shiraz Maher joined the group Hizb ut Tahrir (HT) after the September 11, 2001, terror attacks in the U.S. Reasons cited for his turning against it include study of Islamic texts and the 2005 terror attacks in London, England. Indian-British Rashad Ali followed a similar trajectory. Comments from him are presented on the psychological power of Islamist acculturation. The author critiques multiculturalist government policies aimed at countering extremism.

Minorities may define themselves at a superordinate (e.g., national) level and also at a subgroup (minority) level. However, others' recognition of such dual identifications cannot be guaranteed. This paper investigates how members of a minority (Muslims in the UK) constructed their superordinate and subgroup identities in such a way as to assert a commonality with British non-Muslims whilst asserting their religious subgroup's distinctiveness. Reporting qualitative data obtained through interviews ( N = 28), the analysis explores how British Muslims negotiated concerns over commonality and distinctiveness through describing themselves as being British in a Muslim way. The implications of these self-definitions for the theorization of dual identities, their recognition, and intergroup relations are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Divisive Orientalist discourses and practices, mobilised in the ‘war on terror’, have been resisted through collaborative political projects designed to contest and close gaps between East and West, Muslim and non-Muslim. Through interviews with Muslim-identified and other British anti-war activists, this paper traces the making of a ‘new bridge between the East and the West’. It then goes on to examine the limitations of this political model and describe the search for political relationships that would mobilise Muslim identities in more subtle ways and speak past rather than against contemporary Orientalism. The article discusses recent legal and policy initiatives aimed at preventing forced marriage, placing them in the broader context of the exclusionary governance of British Muslim cultural difference. It argues that forced marriage is understood almost entirely as a product of cultural difference. Thus, attempts to prevent forced marriage focus on the control of cultural pressures at the point of marriage. This near-exclusive focus on culture has two consequences for women. First, inadequate attention is paid to the social and economic problems which intersect with and aggravate cultural factors restricting women's marital choice. Second, this problematisation of culture has generated paternalistic legislation with the consequence that young women who wish to follow cultural practice and fully consent to an arranged marriage may be prevented from marrying as they choose. The article focuses on the issue of Islamic activists in the Western Countries and its negative effects to the majority of Muslims. The author cited instances such as the bombing of the World Trade Center in New York and the terrorist acts against Frenchmen in Algeria have made the presence of such activists a political issue in countries such as the United States, France and Great Britain. According to the author, because of those incidents done by some Muslims, the majority of the Muslims in the Western countries would be affected.

The article examines social process in integrating colored people in Great Britain. The colored population which in Great Britain settle in a number of her ports is affected by two main social processes. On the one hand are forces separating colored from white and integrating them into large discrete groupings. On the other, is the process integrating them with whites and dissolving the bonds which hold them together as a distinct unit. Accommodation and assimilation are used in reference to the process of integration, but sociologists do not always agree on the precise definition of these terms. Accommodation as used in this paper will mean social relationships, consciously organized for the purpose of resolving conflict and establishing a working agreement to enable divergent personalities, groups and cultures to engage in activities while contriving to retain their own characteristic traits. The two groupings here concerned will be called, for convenience, Moslem and Negro. Each grouping, although composed of different national and linguistic sub-groups, is bound together by a number of social and cultural ties. But the sub-groups retain their distinctiveness by their continual admission of new immigrants.
