The article reports that the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) released a series of white papers on water distribution system issues that experts have ranked as potentially significant public health concerns relevant to the Total Coliform Rule. The white papers complement an earlier set of 10 papers on operational issues and were developed in cooperation with the American Water Works Association (AWWA). Topics addressed include intrusion, cross-connection control, aging infrastructure and corrosion, permeation and leaching, nitrification, biofilms and growth, covered storage, decay in water quality over time, and new and repaired water mains.

Women's groups in unions are collective, spaces within which women seek to advance their concerns and access empowering positions. This paper examines their pursuit of gender equality in unions. The need to explore unions and women's groups is heightened by women's significance as a source of union membership, and the connection between union revitalization and responsiveness to women. The paper uses case studies of two unions, MSF and USDAW, and seven women's groups. The analysis is structured by a typology of two frameworks: (i) a typology of gendered equality ideas derived from various literatures, and (ii) the dynamic and linked dimensions of Hyman's (1994) union organization model. The author reflects on the discontinuation of four year of editorship in journal Occupational and Organizational Psychology (JOOP). The period when the British Educational Research Association (BERA) was founded was one in which there was an increasing recognition amongst the research community that a wind of change had stirred up the settled traditions of educational research. It was a time which celebrated the promise of alternative paradigms for research. Ten or so years on we are entering another era where the emphasis is not on the reconceptualisation of what research is but on how it is organised. I think one can discern at least two factors, not wholly separate from each other, that will increasingly influence how a substantial part of research will be organised. These two factors are the changes which have taken place in the composition of the research community and the direction of current Government policy concerning the school system. With the growing demand for open data and capabilities to support big data analytics, new opportunities now exist to rectify this situation. The Australian Urban Research Infrastructure Network (AURIN) project has been funded to provide seamless, secure access to data from definitive organisations of Australia. The establishment of foundations for operational research (OR) enables OR academic researchers to ground their theoretical research. As OR consultants, we compete for commercial contracts with clients based on our practical expertise. The paper seeks to identify the economic foundations of this contracting process, to separate those aspects most likely to endure from those that are more ephemeral. The focus of the analysis is on the behaviour of the players in the consulting services market. The market for consultancy thrives despite the fact that it is difficult for both consultants and clients to understand what is being sought and what is being offered. A key question for everyone concerned is how this problem is resolved in practice. The paper distils existing theories into a set of foundational statements that inform OR research aimed at improving the practice of OR consultants and client interactions. This article presents the papers to be discussed at the annual meeting of the Rural Sociological Society in East Lansing, Michigan on September 5, 1956. In a global knowledge and socioeconomic system dominated by the Western worldview, this paper introduces, from a practical point of view, the Zen Business Model. This is an emerging systems approach grounded on ancient Eastern wisdom that explores the symbiotic relationship between Taoism and Buddhism applied to organizational sustainable development and transformation. The model brings a universal and natural understanding of the organization as a living system whose value generating behaviour biomimics the natural cycles of transformation explained in Taoist systems theories. By doing so, the paper argues, on one hand, that business organizations can learn from nature‐based Eastern systems approaches as a way to increase their positive contribution to society, the environment and the economy. Selecting human resources represents complex tasks and ultimately determines an organisation's future stability and development. High‐quality selection procedures serve as the basis for proper employee utilisation and individual career development, which generate organisational success. To be most effective, in addition to applicant competency in the field, decision makers use various selection techniques and tools. These are applied to reveal and distinguish applicants' characteristics, qualifications and competencies, as well as to predict their success and organisational contribution specified for each profession and position. The main aim of this paper is to develop a fuzzy multicriteria model based on the technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) as support for decision making when teaching and research staff are selected for employment within higher education. The model is based on hierarchically structured selection criteria fortified by the different qualitative and quantitative nature of each criterion, as well as the influence of required experts' competencies. The article focuses on the press and public opinion in Great Britain, discussed at the Conference of the British Sociological Association in 1955. The first influence on the policy of a paper will be its tradition, which is a vital part of its goodwill as a business. Next important factor is the readership's character and the circulation. A paper that is read standing in the train, giving special attention to the interests of women, punters and filmgoers, will not have space to inform its readers adequately about foreign affairs. Third in the list of influences in a newspaper office comes the experience, educational background, sense of responsibility of the editor and his editorial staff. Whatever the policy of the paper, their special interests and bias will be reflected in it. The next factor to consider is contact with readers. The newspaper can influence the reader by a multitude of stories, ideas, recommendations and services. The reader can only refuse his pennies. Circulation is, of course, very important. Without it advertising dies, and the paper dies with it. But generally speaking, the paper's attitude in foreign affairs will be a secondary factor in the reader's choice of reading.

The article focuses on the increasing attention paid to marginal religions by associations dealing with the sociology of religion. The organizations, which promote sociology of religion, include the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion and the Religious Research Association. A factor that becomes very noticeable as one examines programs from the 1950s through the 1960s and then over the last thirty years is that they become longer and more complex, as the societies grew, so did their meetings. One effect of this growth was that program themes, while still important, began to determine the character of the individual meetings less and less. One cannot all change our research agendas from one year to the next to suit these themes. Accordingly, as the meetings grew, program themes began to be complemented by the regular appearance of papers and above all sessions on specific recurring subjects. Among these were changing sets of themes that touch on "other" religions. Tracing the appearance, growth, and persistence of these themes showed that, not only is the idea of "otherness" difficult to pin down objectively, it also shifts with time.

This article evaluates studies on accounting theory, conducted by a committee of the American Accounting Association in 1973. The most striking feature of the papers is their similarity. They are essentially two versions of the same work. Both preliminary papers consist of two principal sections: the nature of theories in the physical and social sciences; and the classes of accounting theories, as the authors are able to distinguish them. All of the papers survey pertinent works by mathematicians, philosophers and scientists, and conclude that accounting qualifies as an empirical discipline.

As a new journal "European Molecular Biology Organization" yet unbranded by an impact factor (IF), the editor can address this important element of science without suffering either the anguish of those journals that languor in the lower divisions or the insouciance of those with double digit IFs. Then there is the gamesmanship associated with pushing up the IF of a journal. The attributed IF value is based on the frequency at which the average paper in each issue was cited during the previous two years. Nonetheless, the IF ranking provides a wonderful guide to what should be read. It stratifies the journals and in general, guides scientists to those where the best papers are most likely to appear.

The article discusses the highlights of the 37th Annual General Meeting of the British Ecological Society held in the University of Oxford in Oxford, England on January 5 to 7, 1956. A soirée was held at the university's Department of Botany at which exhibits illustrating the ecological work in progress at Oxford were shown. A series of coloured slides of New Zealand vegetation were shown by professor Gordon of New Zealand. This paper reports the results of a study directed toward determining (1) the current pervasiveness of the requirement of a business policy course by AACSB-accredited undergraduate programmes. (2) the general characteristics of the courses. (3) the organization of the courses, and (4) anticipated future changes in the courses. A questionnaire was mailed to all 208 AACSB-accredited schools are returns were obtained from 203 of them. The article presents the report of the managing editor of "The Journal of Finance," for 1991. The article states that the journal received 975 submissions and had an acceptance rate of 6.7 percent, and that the median turnaround time of 45 days is one day more than last year. The article states that the acceptance rate must stay low in order to keep the article backlog at an acceptable level, but that there have been a large number of submissions. The article discusses a policy change that refunds submission fees if the journal fails to render an editorial decision within 100 days of an articles submission.

Insights from the stream of research on knowledge calibration, which refers to the correspondence between accuracy and confidence in knowledge, enable a better understanding of consequences of inaccurate perceptions of managers. This paper examines the consequences of inaccurate managerial knowledge through the lens of knowledge calibration. Specifically, the paper examines the antecedent role of miscalibration of knowledge in strategy formation. It is postulated that miscalibrated managers who overestimate external factors and display a high level of confidence in their estimates are likely to enact strategies that are relatively more evolutionary and incremental in nature, whereas miscalibrated managers who overestimate internal factors and display a high level of confidence in their estimates are likely to enact strategies that are relatively more discontinuous and disruptive in nature. Perspectives from social cognitive theory provide support for the underlying processes. The paper, in part, explains the paradox of the prevalence of inaccurate managerial perceptions and efficacious performance. The focus of the article is the evolution of the association as an institution, and some of its major contributors, and to a much lesser extent, on the scope and scholarly content of the field. Contemporary organizations are teleological—purposive—structures, designed to fulfil myriad societal needs. The purposive efforts of any organization are shaped by knowledge. Organizational knowledge includes both conscious and unconscious dimensions. This paper argues that a similar duality applies to organizational teleology. Organizational behaviour unfolds in service to consciously understood teleological aims (such as corporate strategies and business plans) and also unconscious teleological aims (that are undesigned or emergent), which are subtler to detect. Said differently, organizational behaviour is always purposive. Many of the intentions driving organizational behaviour are publicly understood and sanctioned; others are less well understood and unsanctioned. To the degree that some purposive behaviour in organizations remains unconscious, it may detract resources from managerial objectives and confound organizational change efforts. Drawing from facets of systems theory, this paper briefly discusses collective, purposive, and patterned characteristics of unconscious behaviour that may help practitioners to detect and respond to it.
