Dam removal is increasingly considered as a river restoration tool for impoundments that harm the environment or have exceeded their lifespan. However, few studies report the ecological consequences of large dam removal.We performed a multiple before‐after/control‐impact (mBACI) study to investigate the consequences of the decommissioning of a large dam (42 m high) on instream habitat and invertebrate communities in a temperate, forested catchment of northern Spain.Before decommissioning, lack of fine sediments and high concentrations of manganese and iron occurred below the dam but decreased downstream. Invertebrate taxa richness and diversity were reduced, and pollution‐sensitive taxa were missing just below the dam.The drawdown of the reservoir, the first step towards its decommissioning, mobilized stored sediments causing frequent turbidity peaks downstream, which nevertheless, caused no detrimental effects on macroinvertebrate communities. One year after drawdown, the communities downstream from the dam, as well as those in the newly formed stream in the area formerly impounded by the reservoir, became very similar to those in control reaches, showing a successful restoration project.Synthesis and applications. Dam decommissioning helps restore instream habitats and facilitates the recovery of invertebrate communities in a very short time frame if there are nearby sources of potential colonizers. Slow drawdown reduces the transport of the sediments accumulated in the reservoir and their potential downstream impacts, even more if prior to drawdown the reservoir is kept full for years to promote the deposition of sediments in marginal areas that will later be readily colonized by trees. Hydrogeomorphology studies river dynamics, focusing on the interactions between flow structure, sediment transport, and the morphologies that characterize rivers and their watersheds. It provides an analytical framework and tools for better integrating knowledge of river dynamics into river management in the broadest sense, and more specifically, into river restoration as well as into the assessment and prevention of risks associated with fluvial hazards. In Quebec, hydrogeomorphology is emerging as a significant contribution to risk assessment and management approaches, and is at the heart of a paradigm shift in river management whereby process restoration aims to increase the resilience of fluvial systems and societies, and improve the quality of fluvial environments. This contribution outlines the trajectory of hydrogeomorphology in Quebec, based on scientific publications by Quebec geographers, and discusses the discipline's aims in research and knowledge integration for river management. Autogenic feedbacks can produce large‐scale, organized stratigraphic patterns in alluvial fans, but autogenic depositional signatures of specific upstream boundary conditions remain challenging to interpret. Here, a combination of theory, experiment and field application is used to explore how autogenic lithofacies changes can be interpreted as stratigraphic indicators of upstream boundary conditions. Six experiments were conducted to test the effects of sediment supply and water discharge rates on autogenic advance and retreat of the lithofacies boundary (grain‐size transition) in an alluvial fan with two dominant grain sizes. Migration of the grain‐size transition caused a short‐term zigzag pattern in the grain‐size transition position in the dip‐directional deposit section. For each experiment, time‐lapse images and laser topographic scans of the fan surface and stratigraphic cross‐sections of the final deposits were used to quantify characteristic timescales of autogenic processes. Timescales for fan‐margin migration, surface wet‐fraction change and grain‐size transition migration generally shorten as sediment supply rate increases and water discharge rate decreases. Increasing the sediment supply rate shortens the duration of the fluvial sediment storage and release cycle, producing higher frequency zigzags in the grain‐size transition trajectory. Increasing the water discharge tends to widen channels and lengthens the duration of the fluvial sediment storage and release cycle, constructing lower frequency zigzags in the grain‐size transition trajectory. Increasing the water discharge also enables more sediment to transport further downstream during release events, leading to higher magnitude zigzags in the grain‐size transition trajectory. These relationships between upstream boundary conditions and the grain‐size transition trajectory demonstrate how autogenic stratigraphic signals could be used as a tool to infer relative changes in boundary conditions. Deltas are crucial for land building and ecological services due to their ability to store mineral sediment, carbon and potential pollutants. A decline in suspended sediment discharge in large rivers caused by the construction of mega‐dams might imperil deltaic flats and wetlands. However, there has not been clear evidence of a sedimentary shift in the downstream tidal flats that feed coastal wetlands and the intertidal zone with sediments. Here, integrated intertidal/subaqueous sediment samples, multi‐year bathymetries, fluvial and deltaic hydrological and sediment transport data in the Nanhui tidal flats and Nanhui Shoal in the Changjiang (Yangtze) Delta, one of the largest mega‐deltas in the world, were analysed to discern how sedimentary environments changed in response to the operations of the Three Gorges Dam. Results reveal that the coarser sediment fractions of surficial sediments in the subaqueous Nanhui Shoal increased between 2004 to 2021, and the overall grain size coarsened from 18.5 to 27.3 μm. Moreover, intertidal sediments in cores coarsened by 25% after the 1990s. During that period, the northern part of the Nanhui Shoal suffered large‐scale erosion, while the southern part accreted in recent decades. Reduced suspended sediment discharge of the Changjiang River combined with local resuspension of fine‐grained sediments are responsible for tidal flat erosion. This study found that the spatial pattern of grain‐size parameters has shifted from crossing the bathymetric isobaths to being parallel to them. Higher tide level and tidal range induced by sea‐level rise, an upstream increase in bed shear stress and larger waves likely further exacerbated erosion and sediment coarsening in deltaic flats. As a result, this sediment‐starved estuary coupled with sea‐level rise and artificial reclamations have enhanced the vulnerability of tidal flats in Changjiang Delta, this research is informative to the sedimentary shift of worldwide mega‐deltas. This article reviews research on sediment flux impacts on the receiving estuary, ports, and society in Cartagena, Colombia. The city hosts both the country's largest touristic and coastal industrial sectors and is home to vulnerable coastal communities whose health and livelihoods are impacted by pollution. These marginalized artisanal fishing communities lack basic water and health services but have finally been recognized in a new intersectoral committee for Cartagena Bay's environmental management. To support the governance of these complex socioenvironmental challenges, the Cartagena Bay Observatory has been developed as a scientific tool to monitor the bay's conditions and forecast the effects of future sediment remediation plans. Cartagena Bay receives large freshwater discharges from the Dique Canal, draining from the 260,000 km2 Magdalena River watershed where 80% of the national population resides. This runoff transports sediment loads of 2.3 Mt/year, dispersing large plumes that affect the marine ecosystems and tourism and make the bay one of the Caribbean's largest sediment‐receiving estuaries. Following decades of watershed deforestation and erosion, the upward trending sediment inputs and accretion of the Dique delta have resulted in deposition rates of 1.8 cm/year, and the need for frequent dredging. Mercury dumped by a chemical industry in the 1970s can be found in concentrations as high as 18.8 μg/g buried below the bay's bottom. Mercury has also been found in the bay's biota and human populations, and so the dredging needed for the port's sustainability thereby presents a health risk by allowing this trapped mercury to surface. The dating of moraine deposits can present challenges to standard geochronological methods; terrestrial cosmogenic nuclide (TCN), sediment luminescence and radiocarbon dating may suffer from problems of incomplete resetting (by inheritance, intermittent cover/exposure, transport under unfavourable conditions) and/or a lack of suitable (organic) material. Rock surface luminescence burial dating (RSLBD) offers an alternative approach with considerable potential in dating moraines. In RSLBD, large cobbles/boulders are targeted, rather than smaller grains usually used in luminescence dating. The age limit of RSLBD is much higher than that of radiocarbon dating, and rocks are much more readily available than organic material. In contrast to TCN dating, the effect of exposure prior to deposition can be measured. In this study, we sampled a broad selection of primarily granitic boulders of various sizes and shapes (e.g. different degrees of roundness and sphericity) from the Vimmerby Moraine, a prominent and accessible feature in southern Sweden dated using TCN to 14.4±0.9 ka. Our study was designed to test whether morphological characteristics can be used to discriminate in favour of the most light‐exposed boulders and minimize measurements of non‐exposed boulders. As expected, not all RSLBD ages can be attributed to the same depositional event, but the majority of the resulting ages provide a mean age of 13.0±1.5 ka, consistent with the cosmogenic nuclide dating of the Vimmerby Moraine. Despite the apparently successful TCN study, the luminescence–depth profiles measured in the buried surfaces of the sampled clasts indicate that >50% of these moraine boulders were exposed to light (and cosmic radiation) before final deposition, implying some (presumably small) TCN inheritance; seven of the 16 boulders identified as light exposed were sufficiently bleached to be useful for RSLBD. While parasitism is a common lifestyle on Earth, its importance for the functioning of marine ecosystems has been overlooked for a long time. In particular, parasites have significant potential to influence central ecological processes through their impacts on hosts that serve as ecosystem engineers. Using an ex situ experimental approach, we explored the effects of trematode parasites on the engineering bioturbation activity of a common and abundant bivalve along European Atlantic soft‐bottom coastlines, the peppery furrow shell Scrobicularia plana, as well as knock‐on effects for nutrient exchanges at the sediment–water interface (SWI). Trematodes negatively impacted the host's ability to transport sediment particles and solutes in a density‐dependent way, with parasite burden explaining 22–31% of the inter‐individual variability. This could be explained by parasitism impairing the bivalve physiological state and ability to burrow, as we observed a decrease in the condition index and the burrowing depth of the bivalves with an increase in the number of parasites they host. In contrast, the influence of S. plana on benthic biogeochemical fluxes did not vary significantly according to parasitic burden over a short time scale. Here, we focused on the effects of trematode parasites on the behaviour of S. plana alone, and thus excluded other macrofaunal organisms. We should next test whether trematodes modulate the structure and functioning of benthic communities dominated by S. plana to better understand and quantify the engineering role of parasites in soft‐bottom coastal environments. Depositional processes recorded by shelf deposits may vary widely along‐strike, depending largely on the mode of delivery and deposition of sediments to the basin. In fine‐grained systems in particular, depositional processes are difficult to reconstruct with standard facies analysis of sediment cores due to the ostensibly featureless and homogenous appearance of muds. In this study, sedimentological, palaeontological, geochemical, and oceanographic data were combined in a detailed characterization of depositional conditions via sedimentary structures, type of organic matter, trace‐metal geochemistry, and benthic fauna assemblages (foraminifera and ostracods) along the 600 km long shelf delta clinothems of the West Adriatic shelf (Italy). Processes inferred from sedimentary facies and micro‐structures were then considered in the context of the modern Adriatic oceanographic regime. Specific attention was given to the Little Ice Age stratigraphic unit (1500–1850 ce), which contains a continuum of genetically related fine‐grained strata. The Little Ice Age deposit offers the opportunity to examine a source‐to‐sink system with the high resolution typical of modern analogues, at a time interval when Apennine rivers were not yet hydraulically engineered with man‐made sediment traps along their trunks. Individual beds within the Little Ice Age muddy prodelta form hectometre to kilometre‐wide bedsets that reflect the interplay between energetic meteo‐ocean conditions (storm‐dominated beds), flood supply (river‐dominated beds or hyperpycnites) and along‐shelf bottom‐current dispersion (drift‐dominated beds). The multidisciplinary approach applied at different scales of observations helped in understanding sediment provenance and the relative timing of sediment transport before final burial that strongly promoted organic matter oxygen exposure and the loss of carbon by microbial degradation. Overall, the distinctive depositional processes that acted in concert along the prodelta slope produced a subtle lateral heterogeneity of preserved sedimentary structures, faunal associations, and organic matter composition in a laterally‐continuous lithostratigraphic unit deposited at centennial scale. These findings have implications on the forcing conditions that ultimately control the location and nature of fine‐grained beds in both modern and ancient, mud‐dominated depositional systems. Suspension is the key mechanism by which fine‐grained sediment (≤125 μm) is winnowed and transported across shallow‐water carbonate platforms into adjacent deep waters. Unlike sliding and saltation, which deliver sedimentary structures via bedload, the sedimentological signature of suspended sediment is more cryptic. This study focuses on suspended sediment, and its drivers – wind, waves and tides – to better constrain the processes responsible for the transport of fine‐grained sediments. By building forward from remote sensing algorithms developed for deep‐waters, sediment suspension in the shallow water column can be mapped from satellite. By applying machine learning to Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer data for Great Bahama Bank, this study demonstrates how the drivers of sediment suspension change over 18 years across this 100 000 km2 carbonate platform. Through time, both seasonal patterns of suspension, as well as those induced by El Niño‐Southern Oscillation and, more subtly, the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation were tracked. El Niño‐Southern Oscillation modulates wind‐induced currents, while Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation affects local sea level. Across space, this study shows how the eastern margin of Great Bahama Bank, which is traditionally considered to be wind‐dominated, primarily owes its suspended sediment to tidal currents focused between islands. Sediment suspension across the leeward margin of Great Bahama Bank, meanwhile, can be attributed to wind‐induced currents and waves. The authors consider this work a step towards delivering a quantitative, reproducible, process‐based understanding of sediment suspension atop carbonate platforms using Earth observation data. Increased wildfire activity in the western United States can lead to detrimental cascading effects to water quality. After fires, burned areas may experience significant runoff‐induced erosion and sediment transport into rivers and reservoirs, which could rapidly overwhelm existing drinking water treatment plants. This paper couples an assessment of wildfire risk with an evaluation of water utility preparedness to understand where key fire‐related drinking water vulnerabilities exist. Wildfire risk assessments were constructed and expanded from a commonly used methodology co‐developed between researchers and water managers (Edel et al., 2002), to understand drinking water impacts on water quality after wildfires. A water utility preparedness index was created for this study using publicly available information to contextualize how well utilities may be able to respond to water quality degradation after fires. Results indicate that 22% of utilities studied (10% of the population served) were underprepared for fire and 11% of watersheds used were at greater risk of wildfire (9% of the population served). However, nearly three‐quarters of utilities (76% of the population served) showed a moderate risk of fire and some need for improved fire preparedness. Information developed here could provide a useful framework from which utility managers can better assess their likely wildfire risk and preparation plans. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study identifies and summarizes potential risks to operations, regulatory compliance, supply chains, and infrastructure of the electric power industry from changing surface water conditions resulting from global climate change. The results help inform companies/utilities seeking to incorporate climate change risk in their planning and decision‐making processes by ranking risk severity and likelihood of occurrence on both a regional basis and by risk receptor. The assessment includes identification of potential risks to: (1) thermal generating, (2) hydroelectric, (3) land‐based renewable generating, and (4) transmission and distribution assets. These risks may result from such projected changes as reduced water availability (e.g., for hydroelectric or once‐through cooling), increased water temperatures (e.g., decrease in cooling efficiency, inability to meet discharge permit conditions), increased flood severity (e.g., increased streambank erosion and/or damage to river‐adjacent infrastructure), and decreased water quality (e.g., from increased transport of sediment and dissolved solids). The potential risks identified from this qualitative risk‐assessment are documented in a graphical format depicting both severity and likelihood. This approach allows for comparison of risks across a portfolio and for future prioritization of adaptation strategies. A total of 32 risks were identified in the study, including nine risks to infrastructure, six risks to operations, four risks to supply chain, and 13 environmental/regulatory risks. Understanding the material properties and physical conditions of basal ice is crucial for a comprehensive understanding of Antarctic ice‐sheet dynamics. Yet, direct data are sparse and difficult to acquire. Here, we employ ultra‐wideband radar to map high‐backscatter zones near the glacier bed within East Antarctica's Jutulstraumen drainage basin. Our backscatter analysis reveals that the basal ice in an area of ∼10,000 km2 is composed of along‐flow oriented sediment‐laden basal ice units connected to the basal substrate, extending up to several hundred meters thick. Three‐dimensional thermomechanical modeling supports that these units form via basal freeze‐on of subglacial water that originated from further upstream. Our findings suggest that basal freeze‐on, and the entrainment and transport of subglacial material play a significant role in an accurate representation of material, physical, and rheological properties of the Antarctic ice sheet's basal ice, ultimately enhancing the accuracy and reliability of ice‐sheet modeling. This part holds crucial information about how the ice sheet behaves when it flows. Using the principle of echo‐location, we use radar technology to scan the ice in East Antarctica's Jutulstraumen drainage basin. We discover that a significant portion of the basal ice in this region is filled with sediment and can be several hundred meters thick. To better understand how this distinctive type of ice forms, we used a mathematical model that suggested that these ice units likely form when water underneath the ice is transported and refreezes at particular locations. Our findings highlight the importance of these freezing and mixing of materials from beneath the ice. Understanding where these ice units are located provides important information for ice‐flow models to ultimately better understand how the Antarctic ice sheet behaves in the future. A high‐resolution wave model is crucial for accurate modeling of sediment and organic material transports, but its computational costs hinder direct coupling to an ecosystem model. We developed a machine learning model using long short‐term memory to simulate large‐scale, high‐resolution waves. Trained with numerical wave model (NWM) outputs and wind data from nine locations, our model successfully replicates NWM results for daily mean significant wave height and period in Chesapeake Bay with identical spatial resolution. Compared to the NWM, the data‐driven model has root‐mean‐square errors below 6 cm for daily mean significant wave height and 1 s for the wave period in the bay. It demonstrates excellent model skills and can accurately forecast daily mean significant wave height and period at NOAA wave stations comparable to NWMs. Using minimal wind data and having a short runtime, our data‐driven model shows promise as an alternative for wave forecasting and coupling with sediment and ecological models. The model successfully forecasted daily mean significant wave height and period at NOAA wave stations, showing great forward prediction capability. Notably, the DWM only relied on a minimal amount of wind data from selected locations and had a short runtime. These findings indicate that machine learning is promising as an alternative approach to NWM for wave forecasting. Moreover, it can serve as an alternative wave model and be coupled to ecological models for simulating sediment transport, light attenuation, and resuspension of organic materials. Feedbacks between sediment and plants in the submersed aquatic vegetation (SAV) beds of the Susquehanna Flats help modulate sediment delivery into the upper Chesapeake Bay from its major tributary (Susquehanna River). Recent modeling work has shown that SAV can steer the river plume, directly controlling sediment transport and fate. However, transport mechanisms likely differ between flood and non‐flood conditions and depend on event timing. An opportunity to evaluate these insights in the field occurred with several flood events in summer 2018. Sediment and biomass samples were collected after the flood in the large, continuous main SAV bed of the Flats and in smaller patches to the west of the main bed to evaluate the effect of SAV bed size (width). Sediment characteristics (grain size, organic content) and deposition rates were compared to previous observations during non‐flood conditions in the main bed in 2014–2015 and in the smaller patches in 2019. Overall, sediment deposition rates could be predicted by an empirical model including sediment load, vegetation biomass, and SAV bed width, reflecting the role of vegetation in steering the Susquehanna River plume and modulating sediment input to the upper Chesapeake Bay. Understanding spatiotemporal patterns of sedimentation is essential for realistic estimates of sediment and nutrient (especially nitrogen and carbon) storage in freshwater SAV systems, which have not received as much attention as their saltwater counterparts. Shorelines face growing threats due to climate change and diminishing sand supply. Coastal headlands, common rocky features along coastlines, are crucial in shaping hydrodynamics and sediment transport. Yet, the influence of future climate conditions, including sea‐level rise (SLR) and intensified storm energy on complex shorelines with headlands has remained relatively unexplored. In this study, we model changes in hydrodynamics and headland bypassing under different SLR and higher storm wave scenarios. Our findings reveal the formation of circulation cells on both sides of a headland, where wave energy converges around the headland zone. Future climate conditions result in larger storm waves on the beach. However, SLR enhances nearshore currents through a landward shifting of the circulation cells, while higher storm waves intensify offshore flow currents due to the seaward movement of the cells. This effect, in turn, increases the potential for headland sediment bypassing. Plain Language Summary: Coastal headlands, prominent rocky features along open coastlines, play a crucial role in protecting nearby beaches from strong waves and erosion. They also affect how sand is exchanged between different beaches. We use a model to explore how future climate conditions including sea‐level rise (SLR) and larger storm waves influence coastal waves, littoral currents, and the transport of sand around headlands. Our findings reveal that headlands converge wave energy forming circulation flow cells. SLR results in stronger nearshore currents, driven by the landward movement of the rotating flow cells. In contrast, larger storm waves can move the rotating flow cells seaward, thereby increasing offshore current strength and the potential for sand transport around the headland. Understanding how coastal waves, flow and sediment transport change under future climate conditions will help determine coastal resilience. The in situ measurement of sediment transport in wave‐dominated environments presents significant challenges and currently often relies upon the use of fluorescent sediment tracers. However, this method is constrained by challenges in conducting unbiased and representative sampling, as well as facing overall logistical complexities and labour‐intensive procedures. Whilst other tracer techniques are available, such as using magnetic tracers, their performance in tracking sediment transport has not been quantified. The objective of this study is to assess the effectiveness of magnetic tracers in evaluating net transport rates and tracer dispersal patterns. Conducted in a controlled large wave flume, the experiments simultaneously employed fluorescent and magnetic tracers, allowing a comprehensive comparison of the tracers' dispersion patterns and the net transport rates. Results show that the dispersal of magnetic and fluorescent tracers displays a high degree of spatial coherence in both horizontal and vertical dimensions. Similarly, net transport rates are comparable (<16% difference), both showing net transport in the direction of the wave propagation (towards onshore) driven by non‐linear and streaming effects. Magnetic tracer recovery rate (49%) was lower than for fluorescent tracers (73%) and is attributed to the loss of magnetic ink from particles; an aspect of the magnetic technique that requires improvement. This study therefore indicates that the use of magnetic tracers to quantify sediment transport is an effective method with the advantages of being significantly less labour‐intensive than using the commonly applied fluorescent sediment tracer method. Mass‐transport deposits are products of resedimentation phenomena involving a broad spectrum of gravity‐driven processes, and commonly have a high preservation potential in deep‐marine environments. This study documents various types of mass‐transport deposits that are interbedded with intensely bioturbated shallow‐marine calciclastic sediments deposited along a reflective coast during the middle and late Eocene. The sedimentary succession, located in the vicinity of Novigrad in northern Dalmatia, Croatia, comprises sediments deposited in a range of nearshore and carbonate ramp environments, and represents the infill of a thrust‐top (piggyback) basin of the North Dalmatian foreland basin. Five types of mass‐transport deposits, ranging in thickness from 13 cm to 6 m, have been identified: (i) calcilutite and calcarenite slumps; (ii) conglomeratic slump‐debrites with a 'dough‐like' appearance; (iii) blocky‐flow deposits bearing large blocks of beachface and/or shoreface deposits; (iv) rockfall deposits comprising scattered blocks of beachface conglomerates and shoreface calcarenites; and (v) 'classical' matrix‐supported debrites. Calciturbidites are rare and mainly comprise Ta and Tb divisions. Conglomeratic slump‐debrites are mostly found in association with offshore‐transition deposits, suggesting that mass flows were triggered above the storm‐wave base likely due to a combined effect of: (i) strong earthquakes related to the tectonic development of the basin; (ii) sediment destabilization due to pore‐water overpressure during forced regressions; and (iii) storm‐wave loading affecting the shallow seabed. Progressive deepening likely favoured mass‐flow transformations, although the overall paucity of turbidites suggests relatively short mass‐flow transport distance and turbidity current bypass to deeper realms. Multiple erosion phases and resedimentation processes from the Cretaceous to the late Eocene contributed to the diverse suite of extraformational clasts in the mass‐transport deposits studied. The mass‐transport deposits may be triggered and emplaced in shallow‐marine settings mainly during regressive stages of basin development, as the diverse gravel clast composition suggests significant tectonic influence. Although the mass‐transport deposits reported herein are relatively small, some of their peculiar sedimentary features and occurrence within shallow‐marine calciclastic deposits render them rather unique and suitable for a re‐assessment of the nature and evolutionary continuum of processes involved in subaqueous sediment mass transport, as well as the preservation potential of sedimentary features in high‐energy wave‐reworked environments. In this study, a new remote sensing tool was used in conjunction with sampling of river bank sediments to map channel migration patterns and estimate the net contribution of bank erosion to the sediment and phosphorus (P) budget of the Nishnabotna River in southwestern Iowa. Between the years 2009 and 2018, we found that at least 1.81 ± 0.57 × 107 Mg of sediment and 8.26 ± 2.5 × 103 Mg of P entered the Nishnabotna River due to channel migration. This equates to 0.87 Mg of sediment per meter of channel per year and 0.40 kg of P per meter of channel per year. Barring additional deposition elsewhere in the river corridor, these values represent as much as 77% of annual suspended sediment and 46% of the annual P export from the watershed. Our results also indicate that the contribution of net sediment and P volume loss by stream order increases sharply from third to sixth order, even though the total channel length is much smaller in the higher orders. These results suggest that bank erosion is an important source of sediment and P within the watershed and that future attempts to decrease riparian exports of sediment and P should focus on high‐order reaches. Perennial rivers in desert regions are relevant environments that tend to concentrate most ecosystem services and values, but are not as studied as much as intermittent and ephemeral rivers. This article reports on the main morphological and ecological features of the Silala River, a narrow permanent river in the arid region of Antofagasta, in the north of Chile. The study was motivated by the dispute between Chile and Bolivia concerning the status of the Silala as an international watercourse. Field surveys of sediment transport using traps and marked sediments (colored and tagged clasts) revealed that finer sediments are moved in higher percentages and for longer distances than coarser sediment fractions, which corroborates the size‐selective nature of sediment dynamics in the river. The stream features the typical step/pool‐plane bed morphology that is to be expected in an alluvial river with the given boundary conditions of slope, grain size of sediments, and lateral confinement. Furthermore, the Morphological Quality Index (MQI) classifies the river as featuring overall good morphological conditions and the river hosts an abundant population of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Although this is a non‐native species, their presence shows that the general conditions of the river (availability of food and presence of aquatic habitats) are able to sustain a population of resident fish. Overall, the morphological forms, geomorphic processes, and ecological features of the Silala River are typical of an alluvial stream with a permanent flow regime. The presence of a late Quaternary ice sheet/ice shelf over the East Siberian Sea has been proposed in several papers. Here, we further document its duration/resilience based on the sedimentary, bulk mineralogical, and geochemical (organic matter content and its stable isotopic composition, U‐Th series) properties of a core raised from the southernmost Mendeleev Ridge. The chronostratigraphy of the studied core was mainly built from the 230Th excess (230Thxs) distribution and decay downcore. At the core‐top, peaking 230Thxs values during the early MIS 3 and mid‐MIS 1 encompassing an MIS 2 hiatus were observed. As documented in several papers, these peaks suggest seasonally open ice conditions over proximal continental shelves. Below, the interval spanning MIS 4 and possibly MIS 5d records major ice‐rafting events illustrated by overall high coarse‐fraction contents. Underlying MIS 5e, down to MIS 11, the sediment depicts relatively low sand (1.7±2.5 dw%), high clay (33.5±4.7 dw%), and very low organic carbon (0.10±0.06 dw%) contents, and low δ13Corg values (−24.3±0.9‰). This section is interpreted as recording fine sediment transport by deep currents and/or meltwater plumes below a resilient ice cover, only interrupted by a few short‐duration events. These events include (i) detrital carbonate pulses assigned to deglacial events along the NW Laurentide Ice Sheet margin (Termination (T) III), and (ii) intervals with some planktonic foraminifer occurrences, likely relating to their advection from open areas of the Arctic Ocean (MIS 5e, 9 and 11). All Terminations, but TII and the early MIS 3, show peaking Mn/Al values linked to the submergence of Arctic shelves under a rising sea level. We conclude that the resilient ice cover, likely an ice shelf, has been present over the southern Mendeleev Ridge during most of the interval after the Mid‐Pleistocene Transition and was favoured by the low summer insolation of the MIS 14 to 10 interval. The deposits of the upper Neoproterozoic Zerrissene Group of central‐western Namibia represent a large siliciclastic deep‐water depositional system that showcases the intricacies of facies and architectural relationships from bed‐scale to fan‐system‐scale. The lack of vegetation in the Namib Desert and regular east–west repetition of folded stratigraphy (reflecting ca 50% tectonic shortening) provides quasi‐three‐dimensional exposure over a current area of approximately 2700 square kilometres. The Brak River Formation, the middle sand‐rich unit of the Zerrissene Group, consists of nearly 600 m of strata exposed in multiple parallel continuous outcrops up to ca 10 km in length and oriented obliquely to depositional dip. Ten stratigraphic sections are correlated ca 32 km (ca 64 km restored) across the basin and offer exposure comparable in scale to modern submarine fans. Six sedimentary facies are identified and grouped into four facies associations that represent axial‐to‐marginal portions of deep‐water lobes in an unconfined submarine fan system. Spatial facies patterns, regional thickness variations, and palaeocurrents indicate that Brak River Formation sediments were transported primarily from the north to south–south‐west through a trough‐like basin, and deposited within an unconfined basin plain at the junction of the Adamastor and Khomas oceans. The unique outcrop exposure and extent permits the documentation of system‐scale architecture and basin configuration of the Brak River submarine fan system. A transition from the sand‐rich lower Brak River Formation to more intercalated mudstone‐dominated intervals in the middle and upper Brak River Formation is interpreted to record a change from aggradational to compensational stacking of lobe deposits. This records the evolution of a large submarine fan as it filled the subtle seafloor topography and became less confined at the system‐scale. The documentation of these deep‐water deposits from centimetre‐scale to basin‐scale provides a new model for a system with extensive long‐distance transport of sand‐rich sediment gravity flows to submarine lobes without apparent channelization. Source-to-sink sedimentary systems associated with volcanic rifted margins serve as important archives for basin development by recording lithospheric changes affecting the depositional systems. Distinguishing between sediment transport processes and their sediment source(s) can guide the interpretation of a basin's history, and thereby inform regional paleogeographic reconstructions. In this contribution, we integrate and utilize wireline geophysical logs, detailed petrographic observations from side-wall cores, and seismic analysis to describe and decipher a Maastrichtian to Danian-aged basin-floor depositional system in the deep outer Møre Basin, mid-Norwegian margin. Well 6302/6-1 (Tulipan) is a spatially isolated borehole drilled in 2001 that penetrates Maastrichtian and younger strata. A succession of hitherto undescribed carbonates and sandstones in the outer Møre Basin was discovered. It is investigated for sediment transport, provenance, and depositional processes on the basin floor surrounded by structural highs and ridges. The strata from the lower parts form a basin-floor apron consisting of redeposited carbonate sourced from a westerly sub-aerial high. The apron transitions vertically from mixed siliciclastic and carbonate into a purely siliciclastic fan with intercalated sandstone and mudstone, providing a rare high-resolution record of how depositional environments experience a complete shift in dominant processes. The development coincides with similar latest Cretaceous-earliest Palaeocene sequences recorded south of this region (e.g., well 219/20-1) and may have been influenced by regional uplift associated with the onset of magmatism in the Northeast Atlantic. This study improves our understanding of a late, pre-breakup source-to-sink sedimentary system developed near the breakup axis of an infant ocean, and documents what is possibly the northernmost chalk deposit in the Chalk Group. To understand the Holocene sedimentary evolution of the Pearl River associated delta–estuary–shelf system, high‐resolution seismic data were acquired from Lingdingyang Bay to the inner shelf. A Pearl‐derived Holocene subaqueous clinoform developed over the pre‐Holocene incised channel/valley network. Overlying the Holocene ravinement surface, progradational highstand and acoustically semi‐transparent or transparent transgressive system tracts are separated by a maximum flooding surface. Restricted and thick in‐channel/in‐valley retrogressive deposits represent an earlier transgressive deposit. Displaying a westward‐oriented along‐shore extent, the highstand sediment accumulated asymmetrically within 30 m water depths, corresponding to a modern hydrodynamic environment. The wedge‐shaped highstand unit thickened landward with a depocentre (>15 m) located in western Lingdingyang Bay, possibly because of higher sediment trap efficiency inside the salinity front. Preliminary analyses suggest that the Pearl River has been trapping sediment to fill its extensive estuarine system for most of the Holocene and its sediment trap efficiency is greater since the sea‐level highstand. Since ca 7.5 ka bp, the total volume of highstand sediment accumulated in the entire delta‐estuary‐shelf dispersal system was approximately 128.36 × 109 m3. The calculated highstand riverine sediment flux was 16.01 to 16.50 Mt/yr. This value is equivalent to approximately one‐fifth of the flux that occurred prior to widespread dam construction and likely related to late‐Holocene intensified anthropogenic influence in South China. Since ca 7.5 ka bp, only ca 35% of the Pearl‐derived sediment has been dispersed to offshore shelf areas from the delta‐estuary system. With the dramatic decrease in river sediment discharge in recent decades, a larger fraction of Pearl‐derived sediment transported to the shelf might have been interrupted and changed. Intermontane deserts are an important type of arid‐climate sedimentary system. Although rare at present, the sedimentary records of intermontane deserts reveal their widespread development in past greenhouse periods, and they might develop in the near future in response to ongoing global warming. Determination of the provenance of sand supplied for the construction of intermontane deserts is important to gain improved understanding of the potential impact of future climate on environmental evolution in arid and semi‐arid regions. During the Cretaceous, a typical intermontane desert developed in the Xinjiang Basin, south‐east China. In this study, the origin, spatial variability, and transport pathways of both aeolian and alluvial–fluvial sediments in the Xinjiang intermontane desert are investigated by analyses of bulk‐rock petrography and detrital‐zircon U–Pb geochronology. These results demonstrate that the sand in the Xinjiang intermontane desert succession was mainly of extraneous origin and wind‐derived. The nearby South China Block and South China Magmatic Belt were primary sources, and the 1000 km distant western margin of Yangtze Block was an important secondary source. During the Late Cretaceous, the westerlies were stronger in the northern than in the southern hemisphere with doubled wind speeds. In such a climatic context, the results herein suggest that the ultra‐long‐distance aeolian sediment transport was likely further enabled by two factors: (i) the strengthening of intermittent westerly winds during short‐lived glacial episodes; and (ii) the presence of a low‐relief corridor that served as a transport pathway from source to sink. Despite geomorphic processes being increasingly recognized as a vital component of river management projects, evidence suggests that they may not be adequately captured in common river assessment procedures. We reviewed 91 river assessment procedures from around the world to evaluate their effectiveness in capturing geomorphic processes relevant for river management goals. Our objectives were to summarize which common geomorphic indicators are measured and how in different types of river assessments categorized based on their main focus: geomorphic, physical habitat, mixed geomorphic and habitat, and hydromorphology. Our analysis identified differences in the types of geomorphic indicators included and measurement methodologies between the types of assessment procedures. Some geomorphic processes, such as sediment transport, are nearly completely absent from all assessments, despite their importance for geomorphic processes. The variability among assessment procedures suggests that a single procedure is unlikely to capture all geomorphic components required to support every river management programs. Here, we discuss how the strengths and limitations of different assessment types can be used to guide decisions around how to select assessments and geomorphic indicators to support management project goals. Alpine glaciers are rapidly retreating due to global warming and this has been associated with enhanced supply of subglacially derived sediment to downstream environments. We present the first high frequency quantitative record on how the signal of sediment exported from an Alpine glacier is filtered by its proglacial forefield. The data, covering two climatically distinct glacier melt seasons, show that the signal of subglacial bedload export is strongly filtered over short distances, unlike suspended load whose signal is less impacted. The reason is related to the interplay of short particle advection lengths with strong morphodynamic forcing. The subglacial sediment export signal is thus rapidly replaced by one combining (a) the local forcing by stream hydraulics and (b) the reworking of the proglacial braid plain itself. These findings have implications for estimating subglacial erosion rates, natural hazard mitigation, sediment management for hydropower plants and ecological succession related to rapid glacier retreat. Plain Language Summary: Alpine glaciers have been retreating at increasing rates since the early 20th century due to the current climate warming. As a consequence, new, powerful and rapidly changing rivers have developed in the newly emerged terrain in front of shrinking glaciers (i.e., proglacial forefields). These environments are known to be among the most rapidly changing landscapes on Earth. In this study we present the first combined high frequency quantitative data on sediment export from an Alpine glacier for two melt seasons with very different climatic conditions. Results show that the low potential transport distances of particles traveling on the river bed together with the continuously changing shape of these streams, rapidly modify the glacier‐dictated export signal (i.e., subglacial sediment evacuation rates in time). For sediment transported in suspension in the river, that loss of information is less evident. These findings are important for the understanding of how much, when, and which kind of sediment are delivered to the populated places downstream in the valleys, in order to mitigate natural hazards, but also for sediment management in hydropower plants and ecological succession in the context of rapid glacier retreat. The results are also key to improving estimation of glacial erosion rates. The increase in bedrock channel width and the decline in bedrock channel slope with increasing drainage area are fundamental characteristics of mountainous landscapes. Compared with slope, little is known about controls on steady‐state bedrock channel width. We model steady‐state bedrock channel width by iteratively solving models for bed and bank erosion by impacting bedload, using measurable physical parameters, including uplift rate, water discharge, sediment supply, grain size, rock strength, and bank angle. The results indicate that width is largely controlled by sediment flux, rather than water discharge. The commonly used width‐discharge scaling relation is an artifact of the covariance of sediment flux and water discharge. Scaling up from cross‐section to drainage basin scales, our model reproduces the width‐drainage area scaling relation and suggests that the scaling exponent is largely controlled by the downstream change in the fraction of total sediment supply transported as bedload. Plain Language Summary: Bedrock rivers become wider and less steep as water flows from upstream to downstream in mountainous landscapes. The reasons why bedrock channels widen are poorly understood. Here, we develop a method to predict typical channel width based on the mechanism of bedrock erosion by impacting sediment particles. To interpret microbially influenced paleoenvironments in the sedimentary record, it is crucial to understand what processes control the development of microbial mats in modern environments. This article reports results from a multiyear study of Little Ambergris Cay, Turks and Caicos Islands, an uninhabited island floored by broad tracts of well‐developed microbial mats on the wind‐dominated and wave‐dominated Caicos Platform. Uncrewed aerial vehicle‐based imaging, differential global positioning system topographic surveys, radiocarbon data, and in situ sedimentological and microbial ecological observations were integrated to identify and quantify the environmental factors that influence the distribution and morphologies of Little Ambergris Cay microbial mats, including their response to large storm events. Based on these data, this study proposes that Little Ambergris Cay initially developed from the accretion and rapid lithification of carbonate sediment delivered by converging wave fronts in the lee of adjacent Big Ambergris Cay. Broad tracts of microbial mats developed during late Holocene time as the interior became restricted due to beach ridge development. Minor elevation differences regulate subaerial exposure time and lead to three categories of microbial mats, differentiated by surface texture and morphology: smooth mats, polygonal mats and blister mats. The surface texture and morphology of the mats is controlled by subaerial exposure time. In addition to elevation, the spatial distribution of mats is largely controlled by hydrodynamics and sediment transport during large storm events. This detailed assessment of the controls on mat formation and preservation at Little Ambergris Cay provides a framework within which to identify and understand the interactions between microbial communities and sediment transport processes in ancient high‐energy carbonate depositional systems. An integral approach which can simultaneously model turbulent flow and transport at the sediment–water interface has been recently developed and validated for homogeneous sediment which was achieved by comparing numerical results to flume experiments on flow and transport over a rippled streambed and through the sediment for neutral, gaining, and losing conditions. In the present study, we validated the approach for heterogeneous conditions by comparing numerical simulations of flow and transport in heterogeneous sediment to analytical solutions as well as flume experiments on flow and transport through rippled streambed consisting of heterogeneous sediment. For this complex setup, simulation and experimental results agree well showing that flow and tracer transport prefer paths through areas with bigger grain diameters and higher porosities. The effect of flow redirections under losing and gaining conditions on hyporheic flow and residence times is discussed. The interaction of sedimentary systems with oceanographic processes in deep‐water environments is not well understood yet, despite its importance for palaeoenvironmental reconstructions, and for a full understanding of source‐to‐sink sediment transport. The aim of this study is to improve the understanding of how contourite moats, elongated depressions formed by bottom currents associated with contourite drifts, develop and of the link between moat‐drift system morphology and bottom current dynamics. This study provides a systematic comparison of 185 cross‐sections of moat‐drift systems distributed at 39 different locations worldwide, and a detailed analysis of the morphology of six moats that cover a wide range of typical geological and hydrodynamic settings. Additionally, in situ measured current data were analysed to better link hydrodynamics to moat morphology. The median of all profiles across all moat‐drift systems reveals a 50 m relief, a width of 2.3 km, a relief to width ratio of 0.022, a slope angle of 6°, a drift angle of 3° and a concave‐up shaped morphology. Moats can be over 100 km long. Some moats are driven by sediment erosion while others are depositional and primarily exist due to differential sedimentation inside the moat compared to the drift alongside the moat. A new sub‐classification of moat‐drift systems based on their stratigraphy is proposed. This classification distinguishes moats depending on the degree of erosion versus deposition. No relation is found between latitude and moat‐drift morphology or stratigraphy in the analysed examples. The combined data indicate that a steeper slope focuses the current more than a gentle slope, resulting in an increase of the relief–width ratio and drift angle. Thus, this study provides new insights into the interaction of ocean currents with sedimentary morphology, which thereby affects the evolution of a poorly understood deep‐water sedimentary system. The Early Jurassic Los Molles Formation in the Neuquén Basin of western Argentina is a rare example of well‐exposed syn‐rift to post‐rift stratigraphy. In the Chachil Graben, the onset of the early post‐rift stage is marked by drowning of a carbonate system and the development of two deep‐marine intraslope lobe complexes. This field‐based study in the Chachil Graben involved field mapping and correlating eleven stratigraphic logs, and petrographic analysis to document how grain size and texture within intraslope lobe sandstones change from the lobe centre to their frontal pinch‐out. Eight different bed‐scale facies are identified and inferred to be formed by turbulent (turbidites; Type A and B beds), transient turbulent–laminar (transitional flow deposits; Type C, D, E and F beds), laminar gravity flows (debrites; Type G) and post‐depositional clastic injections (injectites; Type H beds). Fifteen lobes form two stacked lobe complexes that show stratigraphic evolution from a lower argillaceous sandstone‐dominated lobe complex, built by transitional flow deposits, to an upper coarser‐grained, sandier lobe complex largely constructed by turbidites. Petrographic analysis quantified sandstone mineralogy, matrix content, grain size and sorting, revealing that both lobe complexes are volcanic arc‐sourced. This study proposes that the differences in the character of the two lobe complexes are due to maturation of sediment transport routes through progressive healing of the intraslope relief, with a concomitant decrease in substrate erosion and flow bulking. Also proposed here is a model for intraslope lobe complex development that accounts for the impact of flow‐confinement on flow behaviour and transformation induced by the inherited topography. Bed type distribution suggests that high‐density flows terminate more abruptly against confining slopes and produce greater depositional variability than lower‐density flows. This integrated petrographic, architectural and sedimentary process model provides new insights into how post‐rift intraslope lobe systems may act as hydrocarbon reservoirs, aquifers and carbon storage sites. We propose a class of finite volume algorithms that are both simple and efficient for solving numerically the shallow water equations with varying densities; shallow water flows in single and two layers are considered. In these flow regimes, variable horizontal or vertical density is taken into account. The shallow water equations for the hydraulic variables are coupled with a suspended sediment transport equation for the concentration variable to construct the model. To approximate the numerical solution of the models under consideration, a generalized Rusanov method is proposed; this method avoids solving Riemann problems during the time integration process, and it is simple and accurate. The proposed method is divided into two stages: predictor and corrector; the presented finite volume approach is well balanced, conservative, and simple. Non‐oscillatory and suitable for shallow water equations when Riemann problems are challenging to solve. Several test problems for single‐layer and two‐layer shallow water flows are applied to the proposed method. The numerical results show that the proposed finite volume approach has high resolution and that it is capable of simulating shallow water equations with variable density in flow regimes with strong shocks accurately. Hyperpycnal flow deposits, one of the most important deep‐water gravity‐flow deposits in lacustrine basins, have become the research focus in recent years. However, the sedimentary characteristics and depositional model of hyperpycnal flow deposits in lacustrine basins remain unclear due to the differences of depositional settings between lacustrine and marine environments. Hyperpycnal flow deposits observed in the middle of the third member of the Shahejie Formation (Es3z) in the Bonan Sag, Bohai Bay Basin, Eastern China, provide a rare case study to reveal the characteristics and depositional model in lacustrine basins. For the first time, detailed core analysis, high‐resolution 3D seismic data, petrology and grain size analysis were used to unravel the characteristics and depositional model of hyperpycnal flow deposits in this study. Twelve lithofacies, six bed types and four bedsets (corresponding to feeder channel, distributary channel, levee and lobe) were recognized from detailed facies analysis. Plant fragment, an important identification mark for hyperpycnal flow deposits, can be classified into three types: completely broken plant fragments, partially broken plant fragments and complete leaves. The proximal part of the deposit develops a small amount of scattered and completely broken plant fragments in massive or spaced stratified pebbly sandstone and massive sandstone due to strong erosion of sustained high‐density turbidity current. The medial part of the deposit is dominated by laminated partially broken plant fragments in planar laminated or rippled sandstone due to suspended settling of sustained high‐density turbidity current and quasi‐steady low‐density turbidity current. Layered partially broken plant fragments with some complete leaves are common in the upper part mud rich division of hybrid event bed and laminated siltstone in the distal part of the deposit. The distribution pattern of hyperpycnites is controlled comprehensively by palaeogeomorphy and sediment supply. Palaeogullies determine the provenance direction of hyperpycnal flow. The formation of synsedimentary faults and troughs control the transport routing patterns. Local micro‐palaeogeomorphy and depression areas further restrict the distribution of sand bodies. During the early stage of deposition with insufficient sediment supply, sediments are transported to the deep basin along confined faulted troughs forming elongated sandy bodies. During the late stage of deposition with sufficient sediment supply, sediments are transported to the deep basin without confinement accumulating fan‐shaped sandy bodies. Sediment mass‐balance analysis provides key constraints on stratigraphic architecture and its controls. We use the data‐rich Middle Jurassic Brent Delta sediment routing system in the proto‐Viking Graben, Northern North Sea, to estimate sediment budgets and mass‐balance between source areas and depositional sinks. Published studies are synthesised to provide an age‐constrained sequence stratigraphic framework, consisting of four previously defined genetic sequences (J22, J24, J26, J32). Genetic sequence J32 (3.9 Myr) records transverse progradation of basin‐margin deltas, sourced from the Shetland Platform to the west and Norwegian Landmass to the east. Genetic sequences J24 (1.1 Myr) and J26 (0.9 Myr) record the rapid progradation and subsequent aggradation of the Brent Delta along the basin axis, sourced from the uplifted Mid‐North Sea High to the south, and the western and eastern source regions. Genetic sequence J32 (2.2 Myr) records the retreat of the Brent Delta. Sediment budgets for the four genetic sequences are estimated using palaeogeographical reconstructions, isopach maps, and sedimentological analysis of core and well‐log data. The estimated net‐depositional sediment budget for the mapped Brent Delta system is 2.0–2.8 Mt/year. Temporal variations in net‐depositional sediment budget were driven by changes in tectonic boundary conditions, such as the onset of uplift before the deposition of genetic sequence J24. Over the same time period, the Shetland Platform, Norwegian Landmass and Mid‐North Sea High source regions are estimated to have supplied 2.3–5.6, 5.0–14.1, and 2.8–9.4 Mt/year of sediment, respectively, using the BQART sediment load model and independent geometrical reconstruction of eroded volumes, which are constrained by isostatic uplift estimates based on the geochemistry of syn‐depositional volcanic rocks. The net‐depositional sediment budget in the sink is an order‐of‐magnitude smaller than the total sediment budget supplied by the source regions (13.9–23 Mt/year). This discrepancy suggests that along‐shore transport by wave‐generated currents into the coeval Faroe‐Shetland Basin and/or down‐dip transport by gravity flows into the coeval western Møre Basin played a key role in redistributing sediments away from the Brent Delta system. Contrary to widely used traditional sequence‐stratigraphic models, highstand sublacustrine fans developed in the deep‐water environment in the middle of the third member of the Eocene Shahejie Formation (Es3z, 42–40.5 Ma), Dongying Sag. Using four cores and 3D seismic data, we describe the sequence stratigraphy frameworks, sediment characteristics, depositional elements, and depositional model of the Liangjialou highstand sublacustrine fan. The Es3z is a complete third‐order sequence stratigraphic, bounded by T4 at the top and T6 at the base. Between T4 and T6, there is the maximum flooding surface (MFS) distributed from proximal to distal of the system in the third‐order stratigraphic sequence. Therefore, the Liangjialou Fan at the top of the Es3z, between MFS and T4, is a typical highstand sublacustrine fan as determined from seismic data. This highstand sublacustrine fan is characterised by gravel to fine‐grained sand, abundant amalgamation surfaces, and crude stratifications common in coarse‐grained structureless‐ to normal‐ graded sandstones. Climbing ripples and thin laminae rich in plant debris are common in inverse‐then normal‐graded sandstones. Channel‐levee, channel‐lobe transition zone, and lobes developed in this highstand sublacustrine fan, with clear internal progradation stacking patterns caused by hyperpycnal flow. The sudden increase in sediment supply in an accommodation decrease situation and the narrow shelf width are the primary controlling factors for forming highstand sublacustrine fans. In the late stage of the highstand systems tract, gravity‐flow deposits caused by hyperpycnal flow are developed from another new point source to form this highstand sublacustrine fan. Hyperpycnal flow in lacustrine basins can transport coarse‐grained sediments with the help of strong flood energy and steep slopes. Gravity flow deposits in lacustrine basins are not confined by sequence stratigraphy frameworks, and many additional areas of sand caused by hyperpycnal flow could be found in lacustrine basins. Natural channel design (NCD) and analytical channel design (ACD) are two competing approaches to stable channel design that share fundamental similarities in accounting for sediment transport processes with designs based on hybrid fluvial geomorphology and hydraulic engineering methods. In this paper, we highlight the linkage between ACD's capacity/supply ratio (CSR) and NCD's sediment capacity models (FLOWSED/POWERSED), illustrating how ACD and NCD have reached a point of convergent evolution within the stream restoration toolbox. We modified an existing CSR analytical spreadsheet tool which enabled us to predict relative channel stability using both conventional bed load transport equations and regional sediment regression curves. The stable channel design solutions based on measured data most closely matched the Parker (ACD) and/or Pagosa good/fair (NCD) relationships, which also showed the greatest CSR sensitivity in response to channel alterations. We found that CSR differences among the transport relationships became more extreme the further the design width deviated from the supply reach, suggesting that a stable upstream supply reach may serve as the best design analog. With this paper, we take a step toward resolving lingering controversy in the field of stream restoration, advancing the science and practice by reconciling key differences between ACD and NCD in the context of reach scale morphodynamics. We describe a framework for the simultaneous estimation of model parameters in a partial differential equation using sparse observations. Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling is used in a Bayesian framework to estimate posterior probability distributions for each parameter. We describe the necessary components of this approach and its broad potential for application in models of unsteady processes. The framework is applied to three case studies, of increasing complexity, from the field of cohesive sediment transport. We demonstrate that the framework can be used to recover posterior distributions for all parameters of interest and the results agree well with independent estimates (where available). We also demonstrate how the framework can be used to compare different model parameterizations and provide information on the covariance between model parameters. Infragravity waves are key components of the hydro‐sedimentary processes in coastal areas, especially during extreme storms. Accurate modeling of coastal erosion and breaching requires consideration of the effects of infragravity waves. Here, we present InWave, a new infragravity wave driver of the Coupled Ocean‐Atmopshere‐Waves‐Sediment Transport (COAWST) modeling system. InWave computes the spatial and temporal variation of wave energy at the wave group scale and the associated incoming bound infragravity wave. Wave group‐varying forces drive free infragravity wave growth and propagation within the hydrodynamic model of the coupled modeling system, which is the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) in this work. Since ROMS is a three‐dimensional model, this coupling allows for the combined formation of undertow currents and infragravity waves. We verified the coupled InWave‐ROMS with one idealized test case, one laboratory experiment, and one field experiment. The coupled modeling system correctly reproduced the propagation of gravity wave energy with acceptable numerical dissipation. It also captured the transfer of energy from the gravity band to the infragravity band, and within the different infragravity bands in the surf zone, the measured three‐dimensional flow structure, and dune morphological evolution satisfactorily. The idealized case demonstrated that the infragravity wave variance depends on the directional resolution and horizontal grid resolution, which are known challenges with the approach taken here. The addition of InWave to COAWST enables novel investigation of nearshore hydro‐sedimentary dynamics driven by infragravity waves using the strengths of the other modeling components, namely the three‐dimensional nature of ROMS and the sediment transport routines. When wind‐waves of similar periods travel together, they group, resulting in varying wave heights within the groups. Understanding the source‐to‐sink relationship of a large river‐marginal sea system is key to using marginal sea sediments to infer terrestrial erosion/weathering variations. The Zambezi River, the largest river in the southern African region, has been transporting large amounts of sediments to the southwestern Indian Ocean since the Cretaceous, which have been often used to infer river integration history and uplift of the southern African region. Thus, characterizing the geochemical features of different parts of the river is the key to correctly interpreting terrestrial sediment signals in the southwestern Indian Ocean drill cores. Here we present the first provenance study based on Sr‐Nd‐Hf isotopic results of river sands from mainstream and tributaries of the Zambezi River. We find that the isotopic signatures of the river sediments are largely consistent with its underlying basements of the different reaches, which suggests the local geology control of the river sedimentary provenance. This result is in line with the studies of the provenance of the Yellow and Yangtze Rivers, which suggest that sediments transported by the upper reaches of large rivers draining interior continents are primarily stored in sedimentary basins on land instead of marginal seas. Alluvial rivers aggrade, incise, and adjust their sediment‐transport rates in response to changing sediment and water supply. Fluvial landforms, such as river terraces, and downstream stratigraphic archives may therefore record information about past environmental change. Using a physically based model describing sediment transport and long‐profile evolution of alluvial rivers, we explore how their responses to environmental change depend on distance downstream, forcing timescales, and whether sediment or water supply is varied. We show that amplitudes of aggradation and incision, and therefore the likelihood of terrace formation, are greater upstream and in shorter and/or wetter catchments. Aggradation and incision, and therefore terrace ages, may also lag behind environmental change. How sediment‐transport rates evolve depends strongly on whether water or sediment supply is varied. Diverse responses to environmental change could arise in natural alluvial valleys, controlled by their geometry and hydrology, with important implications for paleo‐environmental interpretations of fluvial archives. Near the threshold of grain motion, sediment transport is "on‐off" intermittent, characterized by large but rare bursts separated by long periods of low transport. Without models that can account for the effects of intermittency, measurements of average sediment flux can be in error by up to an order of magnitude. Despite its known presence and impact, it is not clear whether on‐off intermittency arises from the grain activity (the number of moving grains) or grain velocities, which together determine the sediment flux. We use laboratory flume experiments to show that the on‐off intermittency has its origins in the velocity distributions of grains that move by rolling along the bed, whereas grain activity is not on‐off intermittent. Incorporating the types of intermittency we identify into stochastic models of sediment transport could yield improved predictions of sediment flux, including physically based estimates of the uncertainty in time‐averaged sediment flux. The bed of fluvial ecosystems plays a major role in global biogeochemical cycles. All fluvial sediments migrate and although responses of aquatic organisms to such movements have been recorded there is no theoretical framework on how the frequency of sediment movement affects streambed ecology and biogeochemistry. We here developed a theoretical framework describing how the moving‐resting frequencies of fine‐grained sediments constrain streambed communities across spatial scales. Specifically, we suggest that the most drastic impact on benthic and hyporheic communities will exist when ecological and biogeochemical processes are at the same temporal scale as the sediment moving‐resting frequency. Moreover, we propose that the simultaneous occurrence of streambed patches differing in morphodynamics should be considered as an important driver of metacommunity dynamics. We surmise that the frequency of patch transition will add new dimensions to the understanding of biogeochemical cycling and metacommunities from micro‐habitat to segment scales. This theoretical framework is important for fluvial ecosystems with frequent sediment movement, yet it could be applied to any other dynamic habitat. Gas transport through sediments to the seabed and seepage occurs via advection through pores, faults, and fractures, and as solubility driven gas diffusion. The pore pressure gradient is a key factor in these processes. Yet, in situ measurements for quantitative studies of fluid dynamics and sediment deformation in deep ocean environments remain scarce. In this study, we integrate piezometer data, geotechnical tests, and sediment core analyses to study the pressure regime that controls gas transport along the Vestnesa Ridge in the eastern Fram Strait. The data show a progressive westward decrease in induced pore pressure (i.e., from c. 180 to c. 50 kPa) upon piezometer penetration and undrained shear strength of the sediments, interpreted as a decrease in sediment stiffness. In addition, the data suggest that the upper c. 6 m of sediments may be mechanically damaged due to variations in gas diffusion rates and exsolution. Background pore pressures are mostly at hydrostatic conditions, but localized excess pore pressures (i.e., up to 10 kPa) exist and point toward external controls. When analyzed in conjunction with observations from geophysical data and sediment core analyses, the pore pressure data suggest a spatial change from an advection dominated to a diffusion dominated fluid flow system, influenced by the behavior of sedimentary faults. Understanding gas transport mechanisms and their effect on fine‐grained sediments of deep ocean settings is critical for constraining gas hydrate inventories, seepage phenomena and sub‐seabed sediment deformations and instabilities. The scarcity of sub‐seabed pressure data limits our understanding of the mechanisms of methane release. Here we document observations from 4 days monitoring of pressure and temperature within the upper 10 m of sediment at a seepage site in the Fram Strait. The survey extends for 60 km between the continental shelf off west‐Svalbard and the mid‐ocean ridge. The data show that the geothermal gradient increases and that sub‐seabed sediments become softer and more susceptible to deformation as they approach the mid‐ocean ridge. When analyzed in conjunction with cross‐disciplinary data it seems plausible that the changes in sediment properties are associated with an increase in the amount of dissolved methane transported to the seafloor. We suggest that changes in the geological setting have resulted in the locking of fractures that would otherwise allow the release of trapped methane to the ocean. Trapped gas in the sediment pores is pumped by tides and causes damages beneath the seafloor. This study is an important step in understanding the mechanisms involved in the transport of methane into the ocean, with implications for climate research, assessment of geological hazards and alternative energy resources. Human intervention makes river channels adjust their slope and bed surface grain size as they transition to a new equilibrium state in response to engineering measures. Climate change alters the river controls through hydrograph changes and sea level rise. We assess how channel response to climate change compares to channel response to human intervention over this century (2000–2100), focusing on a 300‐km reach of the Rhine River. We set up a schematized numerical model representative of the current (1990–2020), non‐graded state of the river, and subject it to scenarios for the hydrograph, sediment flux, and sea level rise. We conclude that the lower Rhine River will continue to adjust to past channelization measures in 2100 through channel bed incision. This response slows down as the river approaches its new equilibrium state. Channel response to climate change is dominated by hydrograph changes, which increasingly enhance incision, rather than sea level rise. With a computer model, we simulate how different scenarios of climate change affect this behavior. The evolution of the East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) during the Holocene remains controversial because of the lack of reliable proxies. In this study, a link between cross‐front transport and the EAWM was found in the North Yellow Sea, and the EAWM intensity could be imprinted in the leaked sediment, which permits reliable reconstruction of the EAWM on well‐preserved offshore deposition. By comparison with instrumental data, the wind speed of the EAWM since 4.4 ka was quantitatively reconstructed for the first time at high resolution (∼5 yr). The results show that the EAWM gradually weakened in the mid‐to‐late Holocene, which was likely controlled by solar insolation, and that there has been a negative relationship between the EAWM and temperature on the centennial scale since ∼2.0 ka; this relationship was reversed by increasing CO2 emissions during the Current Warm Period. As one of the most important forcing factors, relative sea‐level changes exert a major influence on the building of shelf‐margin clinothems. However, it is still not well understood how these changes control the growth of shelf edges and the condition of sediments transporting into deep water, especially over the individual‐clinothem scale of several 100 ky. On the late‐Quaternary Pearl River margin, there are two distinct shelf‐margin clinothems: SQ3 and SQ4. They have different shelf‐edge trajectories (slight rising vs. steep rising) and different styles of deep‐water deposition (fan lobes consisting mainly of MTDs vs. fan lobes consisting mainly of turbidites). This work takes those SQ3 and SQ4 as study objects and runs a total of 136 experiments from the Dionisos stratigraphic forward model to investigate how relative sea‐level changes control the trajectories of shelf edges and the volumes of MTDs in deep water over the individual‐clinothem scale. Our quantitative results suggest that under the geological background of high sediment supply on the late‐Quaternary Pearl River margin, the duration of highstand systems tracts (HST) relative to lowstand systems tracts (LST) or forced regressive systems tracts (FST) has a significant influence on the building of individual shelf‐margin clinothems. If the relative duration of HST is either very short or very long, slight‐rising shelf‐edge trajectories and large‐volume MTDs would be formed, whereas if the relative duration of HST is comparable with LST or FST, steep‐rising shelf‐edge trajectories and limited MTDs would be formed. Through the constrains of the model set to the real geological condition of the SQ3 and SQ4 clinothems, it is found that SQ3 was caused by the quite long relative duration of HST, which made highstand deltaic systems advance over the pre‐existing shelf‐slope break, leading to significant accretion and instability of the shelf edge and thus, giving rise to the formation of slight‐rising shelf‐edge trajectories and fan lobes with high MTDs contents. SQ4, however, formed as a result of the comparable durations of HST, LST, and FST, which made highstand deltaic systems advance to but not beyond the previous shelf‐slope break allowing the subsequent FST to be directly perched on the clinoform slope. Such building processes did not drive pronounced accretion and instability of the shelf edge and thus, caused the formation of steep‐rising shelf‐edge trajectories and fan lobes with low MTDs contents. Frequent and serious aeolian disasters occur in the upper and middle reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River, which runs through the high‐elevation Tibet Plateau. Sediment geochemical characteristics can be used as a proxy to identify the sediment's provenance. To determine the provenance of aeolian sediments in the river's basin, we analysed major and trace element contents from surface samples and local clastic rocks throughout the basin. We found that the major and trace elements differed between the middle reaches, upper reaches and regions south of the river. Major element contents were similar in the upper and middle reaches, but trace elements differed. Al2O3, MgO and Na2O concentrations increased from the upper reaches to the lower reaches, and in the lower reaches, MgO and Na2O were enriched compared with the crustal average. The similarities between samples in the lower part of the upper reaches and those in the middle reaches indicated that sediment transported by fluvial systems from the upper reaches were first deposited in the wide valleys near Xigaze, where they formed a large area of shifting sand. These deposits were then transported by the wind to the river's middle reaches, where they formed a large area of shifting sand. When we compared aeolian sediment in the middle reaches with the local clastic rocks, they appeared to be unrelated. The difference between sediments south of the river and those in the middle reaches means that the southern sediments were not transported to the middle reaches. Therefore, the aeolian sediment in the middle reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River mainly came from the lower part of the upper reaches, not from the local clastic rocks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Submarine channels act as the main conduits for the transport of sediment to deep‐water basins by sediment gravity flows. The interplay between fault‐related deformation and the initiation and development of the channels is poorly known. Here, we present the identification, formation and evolution of the Miocene slope‐parallel channel by employing 3D seismic reflection, wireline‐log and core data in the eastern slope of Yinggehai Basin, South China Sea. Based on the lengths and plan‐view shapes, a total of three different types of fault‐associated slope‐parallel depressions have been identified. The depressions were formed in the fault zone and controlled by the reactivation of the underlying older faults. Among them, Type‐1 depressions are short (<20 km) oval or circle shaped possessing only one depocenter. Type‐2 depressions are elongated (25–70 km), and usually have multiple depocenters. Type‐3 depressions, which are usually connected by slope‐perpendicular channels in the head and middle, are longer (more than 190 km) and connect shallow and deep‐water basins. The analysis of morphology, erosivity and material transport shows that Type‐3 depressions are fully fledged channels. Type‐1 and Type‐2 depressions are channel precursors representing the initial stage of channel evolution. With this motive, a model for the initiation and evolution of slope‐parallel submarine channels controlled by strike‐slip‐extensional faults is presented. Unlike the previous investigations which suggest that erosion takes place at the inception of submarine channel formation, the fault‐controlled slope‐parallel channel is mainly controlled by faulting and has no initial erosive base and does not develop levees. The depressions are extended and elongated by the continuous fault activity. It was not until the slope‐parallel depression connected with large‐scale slope‐perpendicular channels transporting materials into the depression via erosive turbidity currents that it evolved into a channel‐levee system. This study is of global importance for understanding submarine channel generation and evolution since the fault‐controlled slope‐parallel channels have been found in tectonic active basins worldwide. Splash erosion plays a vital role in the loss of eroded materials. Unlike those in slope central areas, laterally ejected splashed materials in slope border areas cannot be replenished easily because slope edges prevent splash erosion particles from entering the slope. Thus, splashed materials in slope border areas are less than those in slope central areas because of the lack of source areas for splash‐eroded materials. However, this phenomenon, called the slope border effect, has received minimal attention by researchers. The partially missing splash erosion induced by the slope border effect on sediment transport was investigated to understand the slope erosion mechanism further in this paper. A modified soil pan divided into four areas, namely, central erosion test area (length = 100 cm, width = 35 cm, depth = 45 cm), border erosion test area (length = 100 cm, width = 35 cm, depth = 45 cm), splash compensate border area (length = 110 cm, width = 30 cm, depth = 45 cm) and splash collection area (length = 100 cm, width = 2.5 cm, depth = 45 cm) was used to monitor diffusion and splash erosion under simulated rainfall. Results showed that the splash detachment rate increased with the increase in slope but initially decreased and then increased with the increase in rainfall intensity. The runoff rate and diffuse erosion rates for complete splash erosion (SE) treatments were higher than those without partial splash erosion (SEL). Under low rainfall erosive power and runoff transport capacity (e.g., 5° slope and 60 mm h−1), the transported clay in SE treatments was approximately 2% more than that in SEL treatments. This amount changed to more than 2% sand under high rainfall and runoff erosive power. However, the mass fraction accounted for by silt particles in the sediments of the SEL treatments was more than that in the SE treatments. Thus, the partially missing splash erosion can weaken the selective transport ability of runoff for sediments. The effect of missing partial splash erosion on diffuse erosion was enhanced with an increase in erosive power. In meandering rivers, interactions between flow, sediment transport, and bed topography affect diverse processes, including bedform development and channel migration. Predicting how these interactions affect the spatial patterns and magnitudes of bed deformation in meandering rivers is essential for various river engineering and geoscience problems. Computational fluid dynamics simulations can predict river morphodynamics at fine temporal and spatial scales but have traditionally been challenged by the large scale of natural rivers. We conducted coupled large‐eddy simulation and bed morphodynamics simulations to create a unique database of hydro‐morphodynamic data sets for 42 meandering rivers with a variety of planform shapes and large‐scale geometrical features that mimic natural meanders. For each simulated river, the database includes (a) bed morphology, (b) three‐dimensional mean velocity field, and (c) bed shear stress distribution under bankfull flow conditions. The calculated morphodynamics results at dynamic equilibrium revealed the formation of scour and deposition patterns near the outer and inner banks, respectively, while the location of point bars and scour regions around the apexes of the meander bends is found to vary as a function of the radius of curvature of the bends to the width ratio. A new mechanism is proposed that explains this seemingly paradoxical finding. The high‐fidelity simulation results generated in this work provide researchers and scientists with a rich numerical database for morphodynamics and bed shear stress distributions in large‐scale meandering rivers to enable systematic investigation of the underlying phenomena and support a range of river engineering applications. Plain Language Summary: River flows in nature follow spectacular meandering paths from upstream to downstream. Such flows are turbulent and interact with mobile sediment and the shape of the channel through an intricate set of complex feedback mechanisms that impact flow dynamics, sediment motion, and streambank stability leading to migration of river dunes and erosion of the channel banks. Computer models are key tools for understanding these mechanisms but have traditionally faced challenges in representing turbulent flow at the scales of natural rivers. We generated 42 synthetic, meandering rivers with various geometrical and flow characteristics representative of those encountered in nature. We then simulate numerically the flow over the mobile bed for each of these rivers to predict changes in the bed geometry. We analyze the predicted results to determine general trends in the predicted shape of the riverbed and the distribution of shear stresses near the riverbed. The resulting library of simulation results provides a data set of unprecedented resolution and detail for a wide class of river meanders encountered in nature enabling engineers and scientists to develop a predictive understanding of river morphodynamics to develop mathematical approaches for river restoration, and infrastructure design and protection against floods.
