During the formation and evolution of the South China Sea, a series of multiscale submarine geomorphologies have been produced in the continental margin. The obvious submarine canyons and channels are widely distributed in the continental shelf and slope of the South China Sea. In the Taixinan Basin, several submarine canyons and channels termed as the Taixinan canyon‐channel system (TCCS) are distributed between the active and passive continental margins. Based on acquired ship‐borne multi‐beam bathymetry data in this study and the global GEBCO 2023 bathymetric dataset, we identify and define nine submarine canyons and seven submarine channels in the Taixinan Basin. The TCCS consists of the Dongsha, Taiwan, Jiulong, West Penghu, Penghu, Kaoping, Shoushan, Kaohsiung and the Fangliao canyons and submarine channels. The detailed geomorphological features of different submarine canyons and channels within the TCCS are analysed and summarized using multi‐beam bathymetry data and seismic reflection profiles across canyons. Based on the slope variations of the continental margin and the effects of turbidity currents and bottom currents on canyon, we propose a three‐stage evolutionary model of the TCCS. In the initial formation stage of canyon, the initial erosional grooves were created by tectonic activity on the continental slope and it represents the foundation of submarine canyons. During the growth and development stage, the submarine canyons are further evolved and the canyons began to deepen and widen from the continental slope to the deep‐water areas. It shows the weak erosion and sediment infilling within the canyons in this stage. On the northern continental slope of the South China Sea, continuous transportation and erosion of sediments led to the initial formation of grooves and it becomes the embryonic stage of submarine channels. The present stage of the TCCS was formed when the initial grooves on the continental slope have further developed and rebuilt under the erosion by the turbidity current and the scouring by the bottom current. In the last stage, the intense erosion by the turbidity current is supported by sediment waves around the submarine canyons and the migration of canyons is suggested by the cyclic steps formed within some canyons. Antarctic Bottom Water has been warming in recent decades throughout most of the oceans and freshening in regions close to its Indian and Pacific sector sources. We assess warming rates on isobars in the eastern Pacific sector of the Southern Ocean using CTD data collected from shipboard surveys from the early 1990s through the late 2010s together with CTD data collected from Deep Argo floats deployed in the region in January 2023. We show cooling and freshening in the temperature‐salinity relation for water colder than ∼0.4°C. We further find a recent acceleration in the regional bottom water warming rate vertically averaged for pressures exceeding 3,700 dbar, with the 2017/18 to 2023/24 trend of 7.5 (±0.9) m°C yr−1 nearly triple the 1992/95 to 2023/24 trend of 2.8 (±0.2) m°C yr−1. The 0.2°C isotherm descent rate for these same time periods nearly quadruples from 7.8 to 28 m yr−1. Plain Language Summary: Cold winds blowing over polynyas (areas of ice‐free water) on the Antarctic continental shelf create sea ice, forming very cold and somewhat salty, hence very dense, waters. These dense shelf waters descend the continental slope to the abyss, mixing with adjacent waters to form Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW). AABW spreads northward from there, filling much of the global abyssal ocean as it mixes with warmer, lighter waters above. AABW has been warming on pressure surfaces, freshening and cooling on density surfaces, and reducing in volume (contracting). These changes are likely a result of melting Antarctic ice sheets, which freshen the shelf waters, making them less dense, hence less able to sink to the bottom. We compare profiles of ocean temperature and salinity in the eastern Pacific sector of the Southern Ocean collected in 2023 and 2024 by robotic freely drifting profilers to data collected from ships from the early 1990s to the late 2010s. We find all of the above listed changes, but also acceleration of the warming, with the rate from 2017/18 to 2023/24 being nearly triple the rate from 1992/95 to 2023/24. The contraction rate has nearly quadrupled. This acceleration has been predicted by high‐resolution climate model simulations. Submarine geohazards significantly threaten human economic activities and essential infrastructure. Based on multi‐beam data and high‐resolution 2D seismic data, two types of submarine geohazards are identified: direct and indirect geohazards on the northwestern continental slope and the Xisha Uplift of the South China Sea (SCS). Direct geohazards include submarine landslides and active faults, while indirect geohazards include buried channels, submarine canyons, pockmarks, volcanoes and magma diapirs. This study comprehensively analyzes geomorphological features, including their characteristics, genesis and distribution. Statistical analysis reveals that the gradient of the Xisha Uplift slope is steeper than the shelf break, making it a more unstable region. However, assessing disaster potential indicates that submarine geohazards at the shelf break pose a greater threat than those at the Xisha Uplift. Many factors, including tectonic activity, sediment supply and relative sea‐level changes, influence submarine geohazards' formation. These hazards do not occur in isolation but often interact with one another. Widespread hypoxia occurs seasonally across the Oregon continental shelf, and the duration, intensity, and frequency of hypoxic events have increased in recent years. In hypoxic regions, iron reduction can liberate dissolved Fe(II) from continental shelf sediments. Fe(II) was measured in the water column across the continental shelf and slope on the Oregon coast during summer 2022 using both a trace metal clean rosette and a high‐resolution benthic gradient sampler. In the summer, Fe(II) concentrations were exceptionally high (40–60 nM) within bottom waters and ubiquitous across the Oregon shelf, reflecting the low oxygen condition (40–70 μM) at that time. The observed inverse correlation between Fe(II) and bottom water oxygen concentrations is in agreement with expectations based on previous work that demonstrates oxygen is a major determinant of benthic Fe fluxes. Rapid attenuation of Fe(II) from the benthic boundary layer (within 1 m of the seafloor) probably reflects efficient cross‐shelf advection. One region, centered around Heceta Bank (~ 44°N) acts a hotspot for Fe release on the Oregon continental shelf, likely due to its semi‐retentive nature and high percent mud content in sediment. The results suggest that hypoxia is an important determinant of the inventory of iron is Oregon shelf waters and thus ultimately controls the importance of continental margin‐derived iron to the interior of the North Pacific Basin. The <3% dissimilar Amplicon Sequence Variant (ASV) clusters of the 18S‐V4 barcode were used as species‐proxies for the evaluation of ASV composition and ASV diversity indices characterizing the hitherto poorly investigated meiofaunal communities of the south‐eastern part of the Levantine basin. Accompanied by abundance measurements, the relationships of these characteristics with sedimentary and bottom terrain parameters were interpreted. The construction of community composition profiles, namely ASVs' list and their estimated abundances, was done using our previously established procedure (Harbuzov et al., 2022, Marine Genomics 65, 100980), combining metabarcoding with sample reads normalization by the abundance of hard‐bodied meiofaunal taxa. The study province included the 54–1418 m depth range, across vertical sub‐bottom horizons ranging 0–17 cm. Oxygen, hydrogen sulfide and methane concentrations in the pore water, as well as sediment grain size spectra and sedimentary protein and carbohydrate levels, were measured, followed by an evaluation of their involvement in the shaping of the meiofaunal communities' characteristics. Community composition was generally site‐and‐horizon dependent and its abundance decreased with increasing bottom depth and across sub‐bottom horizons, typical to benthic habitats which are nourished by organic carbon from the euphotic zone. The relatively sharply inclined continental slope bottom located in the northern part of the Israeli coast was an exception. Its meiofaunal community characteristics were speculated to be affected by intensive sediment mixing and lateral transport of food from the shelf, in addition to the effect of the euphotic zone‐originated food sources. In the Mesozoic succession of the Anyui–Chukotka fold system (North‐East Russia), five stratigraphic intervals were recognised that have an abundance of gravity flow deposits. These are the Olenekian (Lower Triassic), Upper Carnian, Upper Norian, Oxfordian–Kimmeridgian and Valanginian. The Triassic gravity flow deposits formed on the south‐facing, passive margin of the Chukotka microplate and consist of greywackes and lithic arenites. Palaeocurrent data indicate that the flows were directed towards the south‐east. The Olenekian gravity flow units consist of clast‐rich sandstone deposited on the continental slope, and clast‐poor sandstone deposited at the base of the slope. Upper Carnian mud‐poor sandstones were deposited at the base of the slope and the Norian thin‐bedded turbidites were upper to mid‐slope deposits. The continental margin was affected by tectonism and was uplifted in the latest Triassic–earliest Jurassic, possibly due to the initiation of the southward translation of the Arctic Alaska–Chukotka microplate. Following an Early–Middle Jurassic uplift of the area, sedimentation resumed in the Late Jurassic and earliest Cretaceous. Several syn‐orogenic depressions (Rauchua, Pegtymel, Pevek, Myrgovaam and Kytepveem) developed on the south‐western margin of the Chukotka microplate, and deposition in these basins included gravity flow deposits at various times. In both the Oxfordian–Kimmeridgian and Valanginian successions, gravity flow deposits included arkosic and subarkosic sandstones with a northern source area of granitoid complexes and deformed Triassic strata. The intervening Tithonian–Berriasian gravity flow deposits consisted mainly of thin‐bedded turbidites. These sediments had a southern source, which included a volcanic arc that had accreted to the southern margin of the Chukotka microplate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The identification of important habitat and the behavior(s) associated with it is critical to conservation and place‐based management decisions. Behavior also links life‐history requirements and habitat use, which are key to understanding why animals use certain habitats. Animal population studies often use tracking data to quantify space use and habitat selection, but they typically either ignore movement behavior (e.g., foraging, migrating, nesting) or adopt a two‐stage approach that can induce bias and fail to propagate uncertainty. We develop a habitat‐driven Langevin diffusion for animals that exhibit distinct movement behavior states, thereby providing a novel single‐stage statistical method for inferring behavior‐specific habitat selection and utilization distributions in continuous time. Practitioners can customize, fit, assess, and simulate our integrated model using the provided R package. Simulation experiments demonstrated that the model worked well under a range of sampling scenarios as long as observations were of sufficient temporal resolution. Our simulations also demonstrated the importance of accounting for different behaviors and the misleading inferences that can result when these are ignored. We provide case studies using plains zebra (Equus quagga) and Steller sea lion (Eumetopias jubatus) telemetry data. In the zebra example, our model identified distinct "encamped" and "exploratory" states, where the encamped state was characterized by strong selection for grassland and avoidance of other vegetation types, which may represent selection for foraging resources. In the sea lion example, our model identified distinct movement behavior modes typically associated with this marine central‐place forager and, unlike previous analyses, found foraging‐type movements to be associated with steeper offshore slopes characteristic of the continental shelf, submarine canyons, and seamounts that are believed to enhance prey concentrations. This is the first single‐stage approach for inferring behavior‐specific habitat selection and utilization distributions from tracking data that can be readily implemented with user‐friendly software. As certain behaviors are often more relevant to specific conservation or management objectives, practitioners can use our model to help inform the identification and prioritization of important habitats. Moreover, by linking individual‐level movement behaviors to population‐level spatial processes, the multistate Langevin diffusion can advance inferences at the intersection of population, movement, and landscape ecology. In natural systems, animal‐mediated nutrient transport can be a major driver of primary productivity, but the role of marine megafauna such as cetaceans in mediating the transfer and recycling of nutrients has been overlooked. Here, we developed a spatially resolved, stochastic, nutrient‐transport model for cetaceans in the oceanic Gulf of Mexico using species−specific foraging depths, distributions, and diets. An estimated 6.4 × 108 mmol N d−1, or 0.06 mt N yr−1 ind−1, is transported to the surface from depths below 100 m by the 19 cetacean species that occur in the oceanic Gulf of Mexico; 75% of this transport occurs seaward of the continental slope, but the per area transported nitrogen is greater on the continental slope (200–1000 m) than in the ocean basin. Benthos to surface transport comprised 6.0 × 107 mmol N d−1 and was much more common on the continental slope than the open basin. Compared to an existing physical‐biogeochemical model, the transported nutrients add 8% N d−1 to the estimated ammonium concentration above the nutricline and could add 16% N d−1 to the surface ammonium concentration if expelled nutrients remain at the surface. Through feeding on diel vertical migrants, cetaceans retain an additional 2.7 × 107 mmol N d−1 in the surface waters that would otherwise return to depth via downward diel vertical migration. Cetaceans contribute to nutrient movements and recycling in the oceanic Gulf of Mexico, and may provide one of the few allochthonous sources of nutrients for primary producers in oligotrophic ecosystems. We have analyzed the MZ6 onshore‐offshore wide‐angle seismic profile of the MOZ3‐5 survey to investigate the crustal structure of the South Mozambique passive margin. The NNW‐SSE, 625 km‐long profile runs across the Mozambique coastal plain (MCP), the Continental Shelf and Slope, the Almirante Leite Ridge (ALR), the North Natal Valley (NNV), the Ariel Graben and the Dana Plateau of the Mozambique Ridge. Forward modeling through combined interpretation of the multichannel seismic, the main reflected and refracted phases of the wide‐angle, drill hole data and bathymetric data reveal: (a) a sedimentary cover poorly compacted up to 3 km‐thick, intruded by magmatic dykes that reach the seafloor at the ALR forming 0.5 to 5 km‐wide corrugated mounts, (b) between 2 and 7 km, thick magmatic or volcano‐clastic deposits are observed both at the MCP and NNV, forming a 40 km‐wide terrace at the center of MZ6 and southward‐dipping reflectors in the southern part interpreted as the Pre‐Neocomian Formation contemporary of the Karroo and/or Bombeni‐Movene magmatic events reached in several wells, (c) onshore, the 3‐layered crust reaches 39 km thickness, gradually thinning to ∼27 km at the southern end of MZ6. In the deepest layer, velocities exceed 7.15 km/s, reaching at its base 7.55 km/s at the vertical of the ALR. (d) the seismic Moho is marked by a strong reflection on the wide‐angle data. These results suggests that the basement is composed of slightly thinned and altered continental crust, most likely intruded by several phases of intense magmatism. The dispersion of the pieces, linked to the closure and disappearance of the Thetys paleo‐ocean, gave the birth of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. In detail, the initial position of each piece of this jigsaw is of great importance as it has an impact on our understanding of the genesis of the continental passive margins, the role of tectonic inheritance, the pre‐rift and post‐rift evolution of the topography dynamic (vertical movement) and of the geodynamic of the plates (horizontal movement). Nevertheless, in the Western Indian Ocean, the initial pre‐beak‐up position of Antarctica plate respect to Africa plate is still under debate, mainly due to the lack of deep geophysical data. In 2016, an academic‐industrial collaboration succeeded in acquiring deep information along seven seismic profiles crossing the North Natal Valley (NNV) off the coast of Mozambique. The results falsify the presence of an oceanic crust in that area and thus most of the plate reconstruction models. The NNV presents a thick continental crust intrudedded by several phases of intense magmatism, with at its top, a volcano‐clastic pre‐Neocomian Fm contemporary of the crustal thinning and subsequent spreading between Africa and Patagonia plates. The Antarctic Slope Current is guided by the topographic gradient of the Antarctic continental slope and creates a dynamical barrier between the continental shelf and the open ocean. The current's vertical structure varies around the continent affecting cross‐slope water mass exchange with consequences for Antarctic mass loss, ventilation of the deep ocean, and carbon uptake. The Antarctic Slope Current is surface‐intensified in many regions but bottom‐intensified in regions of dense overflows. This study investigates the role of dense overflows in modifying the dynamics of the bottom‐intensified flow using a 0.1° global ocean‐sea ice model. The occurrence of bottom‐intensification is tightly linked with dense overflows and bottom speeds correlate with dense overflows on interannual time scales. A lack of vertical connectivity between the bottom and surface flow, however, suggests that the along‐slope bottom water flows are coincidentally co‐located with the Antarctic Slope Current, rather than dynamically a part of the current. Plain Language Summary: The Antarctic Slope Current is a narrow ocean current that travels around Antarctica following the continental slope. It separates the shallow and cold continental shelf from much warmer waters in the open ocean. Intrusions of the relatively warm water across the continental slope impacts melting of Antarctic ice shelves and global sea level rise. Understanding what controls the strength and variability of the Antarctic Slope Current is therefore important. The Antarctic Slope Current usually has the largest velocities near the surface, but there are regions where there is also a strong bottom flow. We use a coupled ocean‐sea ice model and show that the bottom flow is controlled by the export of very dense shelf water that flows down the continental slope in a few locations around the continent. However, the bottom and surface flow does not vary together on interannual time scales which tells us that the two components of the Antarctic Slope Current are largely independent. The result is important as the formation of dense shelf water is expected to reduce in the future which will impact the deep flow, but not the surface component. This paper presents a significant advancement in the understanding of tsunamigenic landslide hazard across the length of the Makassar Strait in Indonesia. We use statistical emulation across the length of the continental slope to conduct a probabilistic assessment of tsunami hazard on a regional scale, across 14 virtual coastal gauges. Focusing on the potential maximum wave amplitudes (distance between the wave crest and the still‐water level) from possible tsunamigenic landslide events, we generate predictions from Gaussian Process emulators fitted to input‐outputs from 50 training scenarios. We show that the most probable maximum wave amplitudes in the majority of gauges are between 1 and 5 m, with the maximum predicted amplitudes reaching values of up to 10 m on the eastern coast, and up to 50 m on the western coast. We also explore the potential use of Gaussian multivariate copulas to sample emulator prediction input values to create a more realistic distribution of volumes along the continental slope. The novel use of statistical emulation across a whole slope enables the probabilistic assessment of tsunami hazard due to landslides on a regional scale. This area is of key interest to Indonesia since the new capital will be established in the East Kalimantan region on the western side of the Makassar Strait. From 50 simulated landslide‐tsunami scenarios, we fit statistical models (known as emulators) to then predict the likelihood and maximum wave height of potential tsunami waves in 14 different locations along the Makassar continental slope. These predictions show that the most likely wave heights were between 1 and 5 m, with the highest predicted waves reaching up to 10 m on the eastern coast and up to 50 m on the western coast. The geodynamic response of continental margins to erosion may reveal current and past changes in the location of the continental slope. We model the three‐dimensional isostatic response to erosion along the retreating Beringian Margin to test the hypothesis that the margin and its canyons were dominantly eroded during the Pleistocene. Our results predict 900 m of flexural uplift, though evidence for this magnitude of uplift is not observed in Pleistocene and younger deposits, suggesting a substantial amount of margin erosion occurred pre‐Pleistocene. Uplift of this magnitude may be represented by a Late Miocene unconformity across the Bering Shelf and upwarped subsurface units at the base of the Beringian Margin. The distribution of uplift from varying canyon incision and margin retreat scenarios has implications for the extent of geodynamic response during erosional periods. We use geodynamics to link erosion and the resulting rebound of the crust to constrain the magnitude and timing of continental margin retreat. We model the isostatic response to a range of submarine erosion scenarios along the Beringian Margin, which are hypothesized to have formed primarily during the Pleistocene. Our results show that the magnitude of uplift predicted by the mass of sediment removed along the Beringian is too substantial to have entirely occurred since the Pleistocene, suggesting the canyons are older than previously thought. Geophysical subsurface data may instead favor isostatic upwarping that began as early as the Miocene suggesting that margin retreat and canyon incision along the deeply incised Beringian Margin has been ongoing for several millions of years. Isopycnal eddy mixing across continental slopes profoundly modulates the ocean circulation and biogeochemistry. Yet this process must be parameterized in coarse‐resolution ocean models via an isopycnal eddy diffusivity prescribed with the Redi scheme. In this work, we evaluate the skill of physics‐based and data‐driven Redi variants in predicting the cross‐slope exchanges using a suite of offline‐mode parameterized tracer simulations for wind‐driven upwelling continental slope fronts, which commonly arise around the margins of subtropical gyres. The tested physics‐based Redi variants range from a constant eddy diffusivity to a recently proposed, bathymetry‐aware diffusivity augmented by the artificial neural network (ANN) that infers the mesoscale eddy kinetic energy from the mean flow and topographic quantities. Moreover, a purely data‐driven eddy diffusivity is learned by the ANN from the output data set of an eddy‐resolving model, whose solutions serve as the ground truth against which the parameterized tracer simulations are compared. Among all tested Redi variants, the ANN‐learned diffusivity and the bathymetry‐aware diffusivity outperform others in reproducing the tracer solutions of the eddy‐resolving model. However, a physics‐based Redi variant with local deficiencies can introduce global errors in the predicted tracer distribution, which calls for ongoing efforts in constraining the shelf‐to‐ocean transition of the isopycnal eddy diffusivity. A purely data‐driven diffusivity can nearly reproduce the diagnosed diffusivity from the eddy‐resolving model, which highlights the efficacy of machine learning techniques for parameterizing eddy processes across steep topography. This work serves as a key step toward parameterizing the isopycnal eddy mixing in ocean models with continental slopes. Fluctuations in prey abundance, composition, and distribution can impact predators, and when predators and fisheries target the same species, predators become essential to ecosystem‐based management. Because of the difficulty in collecting concomitant predator–prey data at appropriate scales in patchy environments, few studies have identified strong linkages between cetaceans and prey, especially across large geographic areas. During summer 2018, a line‐transect survey for cetaceans and coastal pelagic species was conducted over the continental shelf and slope of British Columbia, Canada, and the US West Coast, allowing for a large‐scale investigation of predator–prey spatial relationships. We report on a case study of humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) and their primary prey—Pacific herring (Clupea pallasii), northern anchovy (Engraulis mordax), and krill—using generalized additive models to explore the relationships between whale abundance on 10‐km transect segments and prey metrics. Prey metrics included direct measures of biomass densities on segments and an original hotspot metric. For each prey species, segments in the upper fifth percentile for biomass density (across all segments) were designated hotspots, and whale counts on a segment were evaluated for their relationship to number of hotspot segments (species‐specific and multispecies) within 25, 50, or 100 km. Whale abundance was not strongly related to direct measures of biomass densities, whereas models using hotspot metrics were more effective at describing variation in whale abundance, underscoring that evaluating prey at relevant and measurable scales is critical in patchy, dynamic marine environments. Our analysis highlighted differences in the distribution and prey availability for three humpback whale distinct population segments (DPSs) as defined under the US Endangered Species Act, including threatened and endangered DPSs that forage within the California Current Large Marine Ecosystem. These linkages provide insights into which prey species whales may be targeting in different regions and across multiple scales and, consequently, how climatic variability and anthropogenic risks may differentially impact these distinct predator–prey assemblages. By identifying scale‐appropriate prey hotspots that co‐occur with humpback whale aggregations, and with targeted, consistent prey sampling and estimations of potential consumption rates by whales, these findings can help inform the conservation and management of humpback whales within an ecosystem‐based management framework. Recent progress in understanding Beaufort Gyre (BG) dynamics reveals an important role of ice‐ocean stress in stabilizing BG freshwater content (FWC) over seasonal to interannual timescales. But how the BG's stratification and FWC respond to surface forcing over decadal timescales has not been fully explored. Using a global ocean‐sea ice model, we partition the BG into upper, middle (halocline), and lower (thermocline) layers and perform a volume budget analysis over 1948–2017. We find that the BG's asymmetric geometry (with steep and tight isohalines over continental slopes relative to the deep basin) is key in determining the mean volume transport balance. We further find that a net Ekman suction during 1983–1995 causes the upper and middle layers to deflate isopycnally, while an enhanced Ekman pumping during 1996–2017 causes these layers to inflate both isopycnally and diapycnally, the latter via anomalous flux from the upper to the middle layer. Over decadal timescales, changes in BG volume are controlled by annual‐mean Ekman pumping/suction resulting from combined wind and ice‐ocean stresses. This study emphasizes the role of asymmetric geometry in determining the BG mean volume balance. It also explores the role of mean flow across the gyre's lateral boundaries in regulating BG's volume and FWC over decadal timescales. The Gulf of Maine's lunar semidiurnal (M2) ocean tide exhibits spatially coherent amplitude changes of ∼1–3 cm on interannual time scales, though no causative mechanism has been identified. Here we show, using a specially designed numerical modeling framework, that stratification changes account for 32%–48% (Pearson coefficient 0.58–0.69) of the observed M2 variability at tide gauges from 1994 to 2019. Masking experiments and energy diagnoses reveal that the modeled variability is primarily driven by fluctuations in barotropic‐to‐baroclinic energy conversion on the continental slope south of the gulf's mouth, with a 1‐cm amplitude increase at Boston corresponding to a ∼7% (0.30 GW) drop in the area‐integrated conversion rate. Evidence is given for the same process to have caused the decade‐long M2 amplitude decrease in the Gulf of Maine beginning in 1980/81. The study has implications for nuisance flooding predictions and space geodetic analyses seeking highest accuracies. The Gulf Stream is the only pathway in the subtropical North Atlantic by which warm water flows poleward. This transport of warm water and return of cold water at depth is called the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). The dynamic method is applied to hydrocasts collected since the 1930s to estimate upper‐ocean transport (0–1,000 m) between the U.S. Continental Slope and Bermuda and separately to Africa with focus on the longest directly observable timescale. Calculating transport between the Slope and Bermuda eliminates the Gulf Stream's northern and southern recirculation gyres, while calculations between the Slope and Africa remove all other recirculating geostrophic flow. The net Slope‐Bermuda upper‐ocean transport is estimated to be 41.1 ± 0.4 Sv, decreasing by 2.0 ± 0.8 Sv between 1930 and 2020. The AMOC contribution is 18.4 ± 0.6 Sv, decreasing by 0.4 ± 0.6 Sv between 1930 and 2020. Whether and to what extent this reflects a slowdown of the AMOC or wind‐driven circulation cannot be established with certainty. Depth‐averaged eddy buoyancy diffusivities across continental shelves and slopes are investigated using a suite of eddy‐resolving, process‐oriented simulations of prograde frontal currents characterized by isopycnals tilted in the opposite direction to the seafloor, a flow regime commonly found along continental margins under downwelling‐favorable winds or occupied by buoyant boundary currents. The diagnosed cross‐slope eddy diffusivity varies by up to three orders of magnitude, decaying from O104m2/s $\mathcal{O}\left(1{0}^{4}\hspace*{.5em}{\mathrm{m}}^{2}/\mathrm{s}\right)$ in the relatively flat‐bottomed region to O10m2/s $\mathcal{O}\left(10\hspace*{.5em}{\mathrm{m}}^{2}/\mathrm{s}\right)$ over the steep continental slope, consistent with previously reported suppression effects of steep topography on baroclinic eddy fluxes. To theoretically constrain the simulated cross‐slope eddy fluxes, we examine extant scalings for eddy buoyancy diffusivities across prograde shelf/slope fronts and in flat‐bottomed oceans. Among all tested scalings, the GEOMETRIC framework developed by D. P. Marshall et al. (2012, https://doi.org/10.1175/JPO-D-11-048.1) and a parametrically similar Eady scale‐based scaling proposed by Jansen et al. (2015, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ocemod.2015.05.007) most accurately reproduce the diagnosed eddy diffusivities across the entire shelf‐to‐open‐ocean analysis regions in our simulations. This result relies upon the incorporation of the topographic suppression effects on eddy fluxes, quantified via analytical functions of the slope Burger number, into the scaling prefactor coefficients. The predictive skills of the GEOMETRIC and Eady scale‐based scalings are shown to be insensitive to the presence of along‐slope topographic corrugations. This work lays a foundation for parameterizing eddy buoyancy fluxes across large‐scale prograde shelf/slope fronts in coarse‐resolution ocean models. The global ocean mass has significantly changed during recent decades, which may induce changes in the abyssal ocean circulation. Due to the lack of in situ observations, the response of the abyssal South China Sea (SCS) circulation to ocean mass changes remains unclear. The ocean state estimate, Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean (ECCO), provides the long‐term ocean mass changes in terms of ocean bottom pressure (OBP). Here we use the ECCO OBP data to quantify decadal changes in the abyssal SCS circulation and reveal a weakening trend. The OBP gradient trend manifests in forms of an anomalous anticyclonic circulation that is intensified by topographic effects along the continental slopes to reduce the existing abyssal circulation. The weakening abyssal circulation corresponds to the weakening Luzon Strait overflow that yields a decreasing vorticity budget in the abyssal SCS. The 2022 volcanic eruption in Tonga caused an unusually large tsunami around the Pacific. It travels with a faster apparent velocity and has larger amplitudes at long distances than what would be expected from a conventional tsunami from the volcanic source. This tsunami was generated by the moving atmospheric Lamb wave and traveled at the speed of the Lamb wave (0.31 km/s). Japanese data showed the amplitude of this first tsunami becomes small when approaching the coast, due to the weaker air‐sea coupling at the shallow depth. This wave split when passing the continental slope, and traveled at the speed of the ocean gravity wave. Therefore, the tsunami observed at the coast is delayed by thousands of seconds from the passage of the Lamb wave. Tsunamis generated by this atmospheric mechanism have not been previously observed by modern digital recording systems and should be considered in the tsunami warning systems. The causes for forearc basin and megathrust rupture zone segmentation are controversial. The Nankai forearc, Japan, is separated into five domains based on topography: Enshu, Kumano, Muroto, Tosa, and Hyuga. The boundaries of these domains correspond to the rupture limits of large earthquakes. We examined the geologic structure of the boundary region between the Kumano and Muroto domains off the Kii Peninsula using multichannel seismic reflection data to evaluate the role of upper plate composition in controlling segmentation. The results suggest that thick cover sediments and underlying accretionary prism are obliquely thrust landward over the igneous basement complex rock in the region of offshore of Cape Shionomisaki and separate the forearc basin. The igneous basement complex rocks directly overlying the plate interface in the hypocentral regions of 1944 Tonankai and 1946 Nankai earthquakes. The 1944 earthquake originated at the base of the complex, and the rupture extent slipped past its basement boundary, whereas the 1946 event nucleated at the updip boundary of the basement complex. The dense igneous rocks might have worked as a heavily loaded barrier on the seismogenic megathrust and separated the rupture area of both the earthquakes. Upper plate geology may be an important factor in controlling seismogenesis in the Nankai Trough and may serve as an example for understanding the controls on megathrust slip in other subduction zones. The Arctic is a climate‐sensitive area, responding rapidly to present changes, but for the past changes, the record is still incomplete. For instance, the Weichselian glacial history of the Svalbard–Barents Sea Ice Sheet (SBIS) has largely been reconstructed based on studies of the fragmentary Spitsbergen terrestrial and shelf records. However, the sediments removed from the land and shelf areas during peak glacials were deposited on trough mouth fans located along the continental slope. By studying the stratigraphy and processes of the trough mouth fans, comprising a more complete sediment archive, our new data have allowed gaps in the Weichselian glacial history of the SBIS to be refined and filled. Here we present new lithological and geochronological data from the Kongsfjorden Trough Mouth Fan, closely linked to the advance and decay of the SBIS. High‐resolution TOPAS seismic profiles reveal three distinct packages of glacigenic debris flows (GDFs) within its upper stratigraphy, each interpreted to represent an advance of the SBIS to the shelf edge. A radiocarbon dated, 12.6‐m‐long core from the southern flank of the Kongsfjorden Trough Mouth Fan penetrates trough sediments directly linked to the youngest GDF package and terminates in the second GDF, allowing us to study the last two Kongsfjorden ice‐stream advances in greater detail than was previously possible. The age model of core GS10‐164‐09PC, based on combining 14C‐, 18O‐stable isotope and magnetic susceptibility data, spans the last ~54 ka. An Early Weichselian glacial advance is tentatively dated to have ended at ~90 ka. A second peak glaciation is estimated at ~70 ka, followed by a deglaciation from ~54 ka. An ice rafted debris‐rich unit (U7) dated between 38 and 34 ka, followed by a plumite (U6), indicates an advance of unknown extent. The Last Glacial Maximum advance is dated to before 24 ka BP, followed by a rapid deglaciation at ~15 ka. The presence of coarser‐grained sorted sediments at the present seafloor is attributed to the influence of the West‐Spitsbergen Current, acting on water depths of at least 846 m, and is thought to have worked in the vicinity of the coring site since ~14 ka BP. Submarine mega‐slides involving hundreds of cubic kilometers of slope material pose a major threat due to their potential to destroy offshore infrastructure and trigger devastating tsunamis. The Sahara Slide Complex affected about 50,000 km2 of the northwestern (NW) African continental margin. Previous studies focused either on its distal depositional zone or the uppermost headwall area, but failed in reconstructing the succession of individual slide events within the entire headwall area. New hydroacoustic data reveal a complex slide morphology including three main acoustic facies, large scale slide blocks, linear troughs, multiple glide planes and three major headwall scarps (the upper, southern and lower headwall). The evacuated slide scar hosts chaotic slide deposits that cover stratified sediments in the upper and southern headwall area, but are vertically stacked onto older slide deposits in the lower headwall area. Based on these observations, and dating of recently collected sediment samples, we reconstructed the history of slope failures that led to the formation of the structurally and morphologically complex headwall area of the Sahara Slide. Slope instability initiated when the lower headwall failed at ∼60 kyr, followed by the failure of the northeastern upper headwall at ∼14 kyr. Around 6 kyr, a major slide within the upper headwall area took place, followed by a series of smaller events within the southern and most‐proximal upper headwall area. The youngest of these slides occurred around 2 kyr. This scenario suggests a long‐lasting history of successive slope failures for the Sahara Slide Complex along the NW African continental slope. Three areas with submarine landslides were found in the headwall area of the Sahara Slide Complex. We observed landslide material and lined troughs on the seafloor. Our data show a long history of unstable slopes in the Sahara slide Complex area: it began around 60,000 years BP at the lower headwall, followed by the northeastern part of the upper headwall area at 14,000 years BP. The main slide of the upper headwall area occurred at 6,000 years BP. Slides in the southern headwall area and shallowest part of the upper headwall area appeared with the youngest slide at 2,000 years BP. Landscapes of vertical relief, such as mountains and continental slopes, intensify ecological and climatological variation within narrow spatial windows. Seasonal vertical migrants exploit this variation during their residence in, and movements between, vertically stratified seasonal ranges. Animals in terrestrial, marine and even human‐ecological systems undergo similar patterns of seasonal vertical movements. The diversity of arenas in which vertical migration evolved lends insight to the factors promoting seasonal use of landscapes of relief. Because animals must contend with both endogenous circannual rhythms and exogenous environmental seasonality, vertical migrants may be sensitive to inconsistent change across stratified seasonal ranges under climate change. To better understand how ongoing and future climatic and environmental changes are likely to impact vertical migrants, we examine vertical migration in the context of niche tracking and niche switching. Whereas niche trackers minimize variation in realized environmental conditions throughout their seasonal movements, niche switchers undergo seasonal transitions in realized niche space. These strategies mediate the relationship between migrants and their changing environment, and can be used to forecast impacts of future change and effectively conserve systems of vertical migration. Niche tracking may be hindered by inconsistent or unpredictable environmental change along a single niche axis across strata, while niche switching may be sensitive to incongruous spatiotemporal change across factors. We suggest that climate change will affect seasonal patterns in vertical environments discontinuously across time, space and strata, and that vertical migrants are likely to face additional anthropogenic threats that interact with environmental seasonality. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Fifth Assessment Report lists sea‐level rise as one of the major future climate challenges. Based on pre‐industrial and historical‐and‐future climate simulations with the Community Earth System Model, we analyze the projected sea‐level rise in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean with two sets of simulations at different horizontal resolutions. Compared with observations, the low resolution (LR) model simulated Gulf Stream does not separate from the shore but flows northward along the entire coast, causing large biases in regional dynamic sea level (DSL). The high resolution (HR) model improves the Gulf Stream representation and reduces biases in regional DSL. Under the RCP8.5 future climate scenario, LR projects a DSL trend of 1.5–2 mm/yr along the northeast continental shelf (north of 40° N), which is 2–3 times the trend projected by HR. Along the southeast shelf (south of 35° N), HR projects a DSL trend of 0.5–1 mm/yr while the DSL trend in LR is statistically insignificant. The different spatial patterns of DSL changes are attributable to the different Gulf Stream reductions in response to a weakening Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation. Due to its poor representation of the Gulf Stream, LR projects larger (smaller) current decreases along the north (south) east continental slope compared to HR. This leads to larger (smaller) trends of DSL rise along the north (south) east shelf in LR than in HR. The results of this study suggest that the better resolved ocean circulations in HR can have significant impacts on regional DSL simulations and projections. Based on long‐term global high‐resolution Community Earth System Model simulations, we analyze future sea‐level rise in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean. Two identical sets of simulations were conducted with different horizontal resolutions. Comparisons between the two sets of simulations show different sea‐level rise projections along the US east continental shelf between the low‐resolution (LR) and high‐resolution (HR) models. At the northeast shelf, HR projects a sea‐level rise of 0.8 mm/yr, less than half of the trend (1.7 mm/yr) projected by LR. At the southeast shelf, HR projects a sea‐level rise of 0.6 mm/yr, while the trend in LR is statistically insignificant at only 0.15 mm/yr. We attribute the different sea‐level rise projections to the different ocean circulations simulated in LR and HR. Under global warming, LR projects a decrease in Gulf Stream flow along the entire east continental slope, while the decrease in Gulf Stream strength is confined to the southeast continental slope in HR. This study provides an explanation for the discrepancy in regional sea‐level rise projections between low‐ and high‐resolution climate models and thus improves our understanding of projected future sea‐level rise. A significant fraction of the Eulerian‐mean downwelling feeding the lower limb of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) occurs along the subpolar North Atlantic continental slopes and is maintained by along‐boundary densification and large‐scale geostrophic balance. We here use Argo and shipboard hydrography data to map the 2002–2015 long‐term mean density field along the boundary via a dedicated optimal interpolation tool. The overall downstream densification implies an Eulerian‐mean downwelling of 2.12 ± 0.43 Sv at 1100 m depth between Denmark Strait and Flemish Cap. A clear regional pattern emerges with downwelling in the Irminger Sea and western Labrador Sea and upwelling along Greenland western continental slope. Comparisons with independent cross‐basin estimates confirm that vertical overturning transport across the marginal seas of the subpolar North Atlantic mainly occurs along the continental slopes, and suggest the usefulness of hydrographic data in providing quantitative information about the sinking branch of the AMOC. Fluid seepage sometimes impacts occurrences of submarine landslides, but the role of landslide deposits in fluid seepage is often neglected. Bathymetric data show that more than 1,000 seabed mounds are scattered over an elongated area at the shelf edge of the northwestern South China Sea. Vertical seismic pipes in the subsurface are spatially correlated with both surface mounds and buried landslide deposits. Detailed analyses within the three‐dimensional (3D) seismic survey show that at least 221 of 231 (∼96%) of the mounds have spatial correlation with the top edges of multiple stages of buried landslide scarps that are stepping seawards from deep to shallow, indicating a causal relationship between buried landslide deposits and fluid seepage. Fluids emitted via differential compaction and hydrofracturing in geological setting characterized by frequent tectonism, flowed upwards along shear surfaces and scarps of landslide deposits and pipes, and eventually provided hard substrates for mound building. However, the impact of landslide deposits on fluid flow is of less concern. Using geophysical data in the northwestern South China Sea, a multitude of seabed mounds are observed in an elongated region along the shelf edge. Most mounds are underlain by pipe‐shaped fluid conduits that link downwards to buried landslide deposits. Mounds have a strong vertical correspondence with the top edges of buried landslide scarps. We conclude that different degrees of compaction between landslide deposits and surrounding sediment and generation of fractures driven by high hydraulic pressure, induced the release of overpressure fluids below bases of landslide deposits, which served as effective fluid conduits and perhaps as part of walls of overpressure fluid layers. The building and release of overpressure fluids were also impacted by ample sediment input and frequent tectonic movements like faulting. Primary productivity in the Arctic Ocean is experiencing dramatic changes linked to the receding sea ice cover. The vertical transport of nutrients from deeper water layers is the limiting factor for primary production. Here, we compare coincident profiles of turbulence and nutrients from the Siberian Seas in 2007, 2008, and 2018. In all years, the water column structure in the upstream region of the Arctic Boundary Current promotes upward nutrient transport, in contrast to the regions further downstream, and there are first indications for an eastward progression of these conditions. In summer 2018, strongly enhanced vertical nitrate flux and primary production above the continental slope were observed, likely related to a remote storm. The estimated contribution of these elevated fluxes above the slope to the Pan‐Arctic vertical nitrate supply is comparable with the basin‐wide transport, and is predicted to increase with declining sea ice cover in the future. Tropical marginal seas host important sedimentary archives that may be exploited to reveal past changes in continental erosion, chemical weathering, and ocean dynamics. However, these records can be challenging to interpret due to the complex interactions between climate and particulate transport across ocean margins. For the southern South China Sea over the last 90 Kyr, we observe a contrasting temporal relationship between the deposition of clay minerals and magnetic minerals, which were associated with two different hydrodynamic modes. Fine‐grained clay minerals can be carried in suspension by ocean currents, leading to a rapid response to regional climate‐driven inputs. In contrast, changes in magnetic mineralogy were linked to glacial‐interglacial sea level variability, from which we infer a control by bedload transport and resuspension. Overall, this study indicates that the transfer pathways and mechanisms imparted by varying hydrodynamic conditions exert a substantial influence on the distribution of terrigenous material in continental margin sediments. The North Atlantic deep water (NADW), according to the classic ocean circulation theory, moves southward as a deep western boundary current (DWBC) even though it may veer into interior and then rejoin DWBC when encountering regional circulation features, such as eddy‐driven recirculation. In potential vorticity dynamics, the eastern side of the Mid‐Atlantic Ridge (MAR) may provide a similar topographic support as the continental slope off the western boundary for a southward transport of NADW. In this article, we quantify the mean meridional NADW transports on both sides of the MAR using a data‐assimilated product and find that the flow in the eastern basin contributes about 38±14% $38\pm 14\%$ of the net southward transport of NADW from 50° to 35°N. Our study points to the importance of observing NADW transport variations on the eastern side of the MAR in order to monitor the transport strength of Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation. It is found that the NADW circulation pathways are strongly influenced by ocean bottom topography. For example, the eastern flank of the MAR acts as a "western boundary" in the eastern basin against which NADW flows southward. The topographic constraint from the MAR weakens south of 35°N due to changes in the MAR height and smaller planetary vorticity f $f$. Inflow of warm modified Circumpolar Deep Water (CDW) onto the Antarctic continental shelf and into ice shelf cavities is a key driver of Antarctic ice shelf mass loss. While recent research has advanced understanding of CDW heat transport onto the continental shelf, the fate of CDW on the shelf is less understood. Here, we use Lagrangian particle tracking in an ocean‐sea ice model without ice shelf cavities to map the residence time of CDW on the Antarctic continental shelf. Mean residence times vary from <1 month in the East Antarctic to >1 year in the West Antarctic. In regions of dense water formation, transformation of CDW on the shelf limits access of CDW to ice shelves, despite strong onshore CDW heat transport. Elsewhere transformation of CDW on the shelf is weak, implying that temperature on the shelf is limited by heat transport onto the shelf or the offshore heat reservoir. Multiple processes regulate the amount of warm water that reaches the Antarctic ice shelves, and the relative importance of these processes in different regions is not well known. Here, we conduct a virtual particle tracking experiment in a state‐of‐the‐art ocean model to trace the pathways and timescales of warm water on the Antarctic continental shelf. We find that there is a large regional variation in how long warm waters spend on the continental shelf from less than a month to well over a year. In the regions along the continental slope where very dense water formed near the coast flows off the shelf to the abyssal ocean, this is balanced by a strong inflow of warm water onto the continental shelf, which is rapidly converted to denser water, limiting the heat from reaching the ice shelves. Elsewhere warm water can remain on the continental shelf unmodified for a long time, so the heat available for ice shelf melt is instead limited by the strength of the flow of warm water onto the continental shelf. Pacific Summer Water (PSW) plays a critical role in the ecosystem of the western Arctic Ocean, impacting sea‐ice melt and providing freshwater to the basin. Most of the water exits the Chukchi Sea shelf through Barrow Canyon, but the manner in which this occurs and the ultimate fate of the water remain uncertain. Using an extensive collection of historical hydrographic and velocity data, we demonstrate how the PSW outflow depends on different wind conditions, dictating whether the warm water progresses eastward or westward away from the canyon. The current carrying the water westward along the continental slope splits into different branches, influenced by the strength and extent of the Beaufort Gyre, while the eastward penetration of PSW along the shelfbreak is limited. Our results provide the first broad‐scale view of how PSW is transferred from the shelf to the basin, highlighting the role of winds, boundary currents, and eddy exchange. Aim: Understanding how fish food webs emerge from planktonic and benthic energy pathways that sustain them is an important challenge for predicting fisheries production under climate change and quantifying the role of fish in carbon and nutrient cycling. We examine if a trait‐based fish community model using the fish traits of maximum body weight and vertical habitat strategy can meet this challenge by globally representing fish food web diversity. Location: Global oceans. Time period: Predictions are representative of the early 1990s. Major taxa studied: Marine teleost fish. Methods: We present a size‐ and trait‐based fish community model that explicitly resolves the dependence of fish on pelagic and benthic energy pathways to globally predict fish food web biogeography. The emergent food web structures are compared with regionally calibrated models in three different ecosystem types and used to estimate two fish ecosystem functions: potential fisheries production and benthic–pelagic coupling. Results: Variations in pelagic–benthic energy pathways and seafloor depth drive the emergent biogeography of fish food webs from shelf systems to the open ocean, and across the global ocean. Most shelf regions have high benthic production, which favours demersal fish that feed on pelagic and benthic pathways. Continental slopes also show a coupling of benthic and pelagic pathways, sustained through vertically migrating and interacting mesopelagic and deep‐sea demersal fish. Open ocean fish communities are primarily structured around the pelagic pathway. Global model results compare favourably with data‐driven regional food web models, suggesting that maximum weight and vertical behaviour can capture large‐scale variations in food web structure. Main conclusions: Mechanistically linking ocean productivity with upper trophic levels using a size‐ and trait‐based fish community model results in spatial variations in food web structure. Climatic changes have decreased the stability of the Gulf Stream (GS), increasing the frequency at which its meanders interact with the Mid-Atlantic Bight (MAB) continental shelf and slope region. These intrusions are thought to suppress biological productivity by transporting low-nutrient water to the otherwise productive shelf edge region. Here we present evidence of widespread, anomalously intense subsurface diatom hotspots in the MAB slope sea that likely resulted from a GS intrusion in July 2019. The hotspots (at ~50 m) were associated with water mass properties characteristic of GS water (~100 m); it is probable that the hotspots resulted from the upwelling of GS water during its transport into the slope sea, likely by a GS meander directly intruding onto the continental slope east of where the hotspots were observed. Further work is required to unravel how increasingly frequent direct GS intrusions could influence MAB marine ecosystems. Mesoscale eddy mixing profoundly modulates the ocean tracer budgets, and is typically parameterized via the isopycnal eddy diffusivity in ocean climate models. However, relatively little is known about the magnitude/structure of isopycnal eddy diffusivity across continental slopes, which hinders the understanding and prediction of shelf‐open ocean exchanges. In this study, we quantify the isopycnal eddy diffusivity in a suite of eddy‐resolving, process‐oriented simulations of mesoscale turbulence over continental slopes under upwelling‐favorable winds, a configuration that commonly arises around the margins of subtropical gyres. Cross‐shore eddy diffusivity is found to be suppressed in the upper open ocean occupied by strong alongshore flows, but enhanced at depths where alongshore flows are weakened, a finding that is consistent with the enhancement of eddy mixing near the steering level. Over continental slopes, eddy diffusivity also strengthens at mid‐depths, but almost vanishes near the seafloor. To theoretically constrain the simulated eddy fluxes, we examine the scaling of eddy diffusivity proposed by Ferrari and Nikurashin (2010, https://doi.org/10.1175/2010JPO4278.1), which accounts for the suppression of eddy mixing induced by the relative propagation of eddies to the mean flow. We show that, apart from the mean‐flow suppression effect, the eddy anisotropy effect induced by steep topography shapes both the horizontal and vertical structures of cross‐shore eddy diffusivity. Finally, we propose prospective closures of the eddy propagation speed and eddy anisotropy effect over continental slopes using the large‐scale flow and bathymetric quantities. This work offers a basis upon which a "slope‐aware" parameterization of mesoscale eddy mixing can be developed. Instead, these models rely on parameterization schemes that infer eddy effects from the large‐scale, explicitly resolved flow properties. This work investigated the utility of a parameterization developed based on open ocean turbulent properties in quantifying eddy tracer fluxes across continental margins, following which further refinements of the parameterization have been made. Our results show that, apart from previously considered ingredients, the tendency of steep topography across continental margins to "squeeze" the eddy shapes must be incorporated into this parameterization. This work provides a basis upon which a parameterization scheme for eddy tracer fluxes across both continental margins and open ocean environments can be devised. Manganese (Mn) is an abundant element in the Earth's crust. However, its concentrations in open ocean seawater are low, where external inputs are scarce. In this study, we report the dissolved Mn and particulate Mn distributions in the Southern Ocean, measured along the GEOTRACES—SR3 transect, from Tasmania (Australia) to Antarctica in the Southern Ocean, during the austral summer 2018. Both dissolved Mn and particulate Mn concentrations were generally low away from localized sources (< 0.3 nmol L−1 and < 0.1 nmol L−1, respectively) along the transect. Our observations of a lower labile particulate fraction than previously measured suggest the Southern Ocean has a unique particulate Mn composition. Low surface dissolved Mn concentrations were attributed to biological uptake and few external sources. Our results suggest biological control of the Mn cycle was higher above the Antarctic continental slope, compared to the rest of the section, and our particulate Mn : P ratios indicated the presence of iron‐stressed diatoms south of the Sub‐Antarctic Front. We suggest low dissolved Mn surface concentrations may (co‐)limit phytoplankton growth in this region. Localized higher dissolved Mn concentrations were observed due to external sources, such as sedimentary and hydrothermal inputs. The presence of an eddy at the same latitude as a hydrothermal plume induced an upwelling of hydrothermally enriched waters up to 1000 m; however, no dissolved Mn inputs to the surface waters were observed. Four ichthyoplankton cruises and backward tracking experiments were conducted to study the connectivity of coastal and neritic fish larvae over the continental slope and to the oceanic deep‐water region of the western Gulf of Mexico. Distribution patterns of larval abundance at oceanic stations showed higher abundance and the presence of larvae at oceanic stations during two cruises. Larval transport was simulated using outputs of a data assimilation model that represented the flow conditions during each cruise. Higher abundances of larvae of coastal and neritic species at oceanic stations agreed with offshore transport inferred from numerical experiments seeding particles over different spatial scales (stations vs. transects). Satellite images of surface chlorophyll were consistent with the circulation patterns indicated by the model, indicating filaments of shelf waters were transported toward the transects with higher larval abundances. Particle tracking experiments indicated that the northwestern shelf provinces of Perdido, Tamaulipas, and Texas were the main source of propagules to the oceanic region, while shelf provinces of northern Veracruz, Campeche, Yucatan, Louisiana, and Mississippi‐Alabama contributed much less. The length and intensity of the shelf front limited ichthyoplankton cross‐shelf exchange during some cruises, and mesoscale anticyclonic and cyclonic eddies advected larvae to the deep‐water region during others. The agreement between the spatial distribution of fish larvae and the simulated larval transport confirm that circulation models are a valuable tool for examining potential dispersal pathways of neritic species, as long as similar spatial and temporal scales as the ones used in this study are considered. Intermediate nepheloid layers (INLs) form important pathways for the cross‐slope transport and vertical export of particulate matter, including carbon. While intermediate maxima in particle settling fluxes have been reported in the Eurasian Basin of the Arctic Ocean, direct observations of turbid INLs above the continental slope are still lacking. In this study, we provide the first direct evidence of an INL, coinciding with enhanced mid‐water turbulent dissipation rates, over the Laptev Sea continental slope in summer 2018. Current velocity data show a period of enhanced downslope flow with depressed isopcynals, suggesting that the enhanced turbulent dissipation is probably the consequence of the presence of an unsteady lee wave. Similar events occur mostly during ice free periods, suggesting an increasing frequency of episodic cross‐slope particle transport in the future. The discovery of the INL and the episodic generation mechanism provide new insights into particle transport dynamics in this rapidly changing environment. Most of the particles reaching the sea floor originate from the shallower regions closer to the coast. Later, these particles are lifted off the ground again by strong turbulent motions and transported toward deeper regions in the middle of the water column. Also, we present a new mechanism for the creation of turbulence, which is necessary to lift particles off the sea floor. Large submarine plateaus impede the eastward flow of the deep‐reaching Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC), and at the southern Kerguelen Plateau (SKP), the ACC flow is steered north through the Fawn Trough and south through the Princess Elizabeth Trough. During the Kerguelen Axis study, a regional‐scale ecosystem survey, oceanographic sampling showed the ACC water properties west of the SKP to be distinct from those over the SKP. Electrona antarctica, a dominant mesopelagic fish species, is associated with Circumpolar Deep Water transported by the ACC, and modified versions that occur over and downstream from the SKP including along the Antarctic continental slope. Here, otolith chemistry from samples of E. antarctica collected during the survey were used to test a biophysical hypothesis predicting structuring and movement between populations along zonal flow in the ACC. In chemistry deposited during early life in the otolith nuclei, the relationship between MgCa−1 and SrCa−1 showed complete separation between fish collected over the SKP and within the ACC proper, indicating population differentiation. Chemistry from the otolith edges, deposited during the period leading up to capture, showed significantly higher concentrations of MgCa−1 over the SKP, likely related to differences in feeding and reproduction. Fish with nucleus chemistry characteristic of the SKP were also found in samples caught further east, suggesting they were transported along the ACC downstream, and southward toward the Antarctic continent within the Australian–Antarctic Gyre. The West Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) is a highly productive polar ecosystem where phytoplankton dynamics are regulated by intense bottom‐up control from light and iron availability. Rapid climate change along the WAP is driving shifts in the mixed layer depth and iron availability. Elucidating the relative role of each of these controls and their interactions is crucial for understanding of how primary productivity will change in coming decades. Using a combination of ultra‐high‐resolution variable chlorophyll fluorescence together with fluorescence lifetime analyses on the 2017 Palmer Long Term Ecological Research cruise, we mapped the temporal and spatial variability in phytoplankton photophysiology across the WAP. Highest photosynthetic energy conversion efficiencies and lowest fluorescence quantum yields were observed in iron replete coastal regions. Photosynthetic energy conversion efficiencies decreased by ~ 60% with a proportional increase in quantum yields of thermal dissipation and fluorescence on the outer continental shelf and slope. The combined analysis of variable fluorescence and lifetimes revealed that, in addition to the decrease in the fraction of inactive reaction centers, up to 20% of light harvesting chlorophyll‐protein antenna complexes were energetically uncoupled from photosystem II reaction centers in iron‐limited phytoplankton. These biophysical signatures strongly suggest severe iron limitation of photosynthesis in the surface waters along the continental slope of the WAP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Soft‐sediment deformation (SSD) structures are the syn‐sedimentary structures that can form by seismic as well as non‐seismic processes. The SSD structures commonly occur in the Semri Group of the Vindhyan Supergroup in the Kajrahat Limestone, Chopan Porcellanite and Rohtas Limestone formations, and the Glauconitic Sandstone Member. The SSD structures include, slump folds, kink bands, chevron folds, convolute beddings, contorted cross‐beds, flame structures, pinch‐and‐swell structures, breccias, sagging structures, water‐escape structures, and dykes of varying dimensions. The lagoonal and tidal depositional environments of the Kajarahat Limestone Formation (not the continental slope environment) lead to suggest that the SSD structures formed as a result of the seismic activities in them. The SSD structures of the Chopan Porcellanite Formation associated with rhyolite might have originated as a result of volcanic activities or seismicity, while those occurring in the Glauconitic Sandstone Member (Kheinjua Formation) adjacent to the Son Lineament might have formed as a tectonics‐related seismicity. The convolute bedding with large lateral extent in the Rohtas Limestone Formation looks related to seismicity in the light of its deposition along the shelf. Thus, the upper Palaeo‐Mesoproterozoic Semri Group, Vindhyan Supergroup represents varieties of the SSD structures formed mostly by seismic processes. These imply that the Central India was unstable and was a place for tectonically controlled seismic events during the upper Palaeo‐Mesoproterozoic (1,700–1,600 Ma). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The stability of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) depends on ocean heat transport toward its base and remains a source of uncertainty in sea level rise prediction. The Antarctic Slope Current (ASC), a major boundary current of the ocean's global circulation, serves as a dynamic gateway for heat transport toward Antarctica. Here, we use observations collected from the Bellingshausen Sea to propose a mechanistic explanation for the initiation of the westward‐flowing ASC. Waters modified throughout the Bellingshausen Sea by ocean‐sea‐ice and ocean‐ice‐shelf interactions are exported to the continental slope in a narrow, topographically steered western boundary current. This focused outflow produces a localized front at the shelf break that supports the emerging ASC. This mechanism emphasizes the importance of buoyancy forcing, integrated over the continental shelf, as opposed to local wind forcing, in the generation mechanism and suggests the potential for remote control of melt rates of WAIS' largest ice shelves. Simulating Arctic Ocean mesoscale eddies in ocean circulation models presents a great challenge because of their small size. This study employs an unstructured‐mesh ocean‐sea ice model to conduct a decadal‐scale global simulation with a 1‐km Arctic. It provides a basinwide overview of Arctic eddy energetics. Increasing model resolution from 4 to 1 km increases Arctic eddy kinetic energy (EKE) and total kinetic energy (TKE) by about 40% and 15%, respectively. EKE is the highest along main currents over topography slopes, where strong conversion from available potential energy to EKE takes place. It is high in halocline with a maximum typically centered in the depth range of 70–110 m, and in the Atlantic Water layer of the Eurasian Basin as well. The seasonal variability of EKE along the continental slopes of southern Canada and eastern Eurasian basins is similar, stronger in fall and weaker in spring. A bolus is a vortex formed by an internal wave propagating upslope with the shoaling wave. The amount of sediment and biota transported by boluses travelling up the world's continental slopes and onto the continental shelves has not been established but could be vital for maintaining nutrient‐rich coastal ecosystems. Previous laboratory experiments and simulations of shoaling boluses have considered a two‐layer density stratification or a linear density profile. We present experiments on bolus formation and propagation in a stratification with a density profile ρ(z) represented by a tanh‐profile, which describes many ocean pycnoclines. Our laboratory experiments examine pycnoclines with thicknesses varying from nearly zero (a two‐layer system) to large thicknesses where the density varies almost linearly with depth. The bolus volume, displacement upslope, and available potential energy are measured as a function of pycnocline thickness. Maximum upslope displacement is found to be twice that observed for a two‐layer stratification. Plain Language Summary: Interfacial waves can be observed along the surface of the ocean, and as they approach the coastline the waves steepen, break, and ultimately surge up the beach. These waves are analogous to internal waves, which occur within the ocean at the horizontal interface of more and less dense water. These internal waves can be an order of magnitude taller than the waves seen at the beach, and the surge (called a bolus) can move kilometers along the ocean bottom. Previous efforts to model these boluses have approximated the ocean's density as two layers of different density water. However, the ocean has a more gradual transition between the layers, which can be over 100 meters thick. The impact of this transition layer, called a pycnocline, on bolus transport is poorly understood. Here, we perform laboratory experiments to demonstrate that the presence of a thick pycnocline can double the distance the bolus travels upslope and increase the amount of energy for mixing. This demonstrates the need for a better model of bolus propagation to understand how these breaking internal waves move material along the bottom of the ocean. The deep‐water Niger Delta continental slope is a prolific petroleum province. A key challenge in unlocking the potential of such petroleum provinces is in understanding the internal architecture and associated controlling factors of deep‐water depositional systems. Here, we used high‐resolution 3D seismic data to analyse the development of a submarine system on the midslope of the Niger continental margin: the Bakama Submarine Depositional System (BSDS). Over 18 km down dip, the BSDS evolves from lobes through straight channels to lobes again. The fills of intraslope Minibasin I comprised three overlapping lobe complexes varying in size from 1,200 to 4,000 m in width, 15 to 30 m in thickness, and 8 to 11 km in length. During the development of these three lobe complexes, Minibasin I and adjacent growth faults interacted with a variety of deep‐water depositional process, which directly influenced the sediment distribution on this slope and the evolution of whole BSDS. Downstream of Minibasin I, ten straight, sub‐parallel adjacent channels occurred on a significantly increased slope (from <2° to >3°). They deeply incise the underlying strata and are small in scale, 150 to 200 m in width, 30 to 45 m in depth with aspect ratios of 4 to 5. On a more gentle slope section (<2°) within the linked downslope intraslope basin (Minibasin II), these adjacent channels are replaced by two attached lobe complexes that are some 2,100 to 3,100 m in length, 600 to 1,700 m in width, and 10 to 30 m in thickness. In this study, shear wave speed and related physical properties were measured for 21 seafloor sediment cores collected in the northern South China Sea. Results reveal that the shear wave speed in this study area ranges between 15.57 and 75.55 m/s and demonstrates a pattern of regional distribution. The sediment in the continental shelf area shows characteristics of high shear wave speed, high wet bulk density, low porosity, and large grain size. Contrarily, the sediment in the continental slope area exhibits characteristics of low shear wave speed, low wet bulk density, high porosity, and fine particles. Accordingly, the correlation between shear wave speed and physical properties such as porosity, wet bulk density, water content, and average grain size was studied. Prediction formulas of shear wave speed of sediments in this study area containing single and double physical parameters were established via regression analysis. The comparison between single‐parameter and double‐parameter prediction formulas indicates that the determined coefficient of the double‐parameter prediction formulas based on porosity and average grain size is higher than that of single‐parameter prediction formulas. It indicates that the double‐parameter prediction formulas based on porosity and average grain size have better prediction performance. Moreover, the prediction formulas established in this study were further compared with those of other study areas, and their differences were analyzed accordingly. Multibeam echo‐sounding and seismic data were obtained during three geophysical surveys by Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey (GMGS) on the north‐eastern slope of the South China Sea (SCS). Nineteen seafloor domes and numerous elongated pockmarks were distinguished in the study area. The seafloor domes vary on number of summits, shape, and spatial interrelation, based on which they were classified into four types which are single‐summit, double‐summits, elongated, and connected. Bottom simulating reflectors and blanking zone underneath were observed in the seismic profiles, indicating the potential existence of gas hydrate and free gas. Multiple faults and diapirs exist beneath the seafloor domes and pockmarks, which were inferred to provide efficient pathways for fluid migrating from deep subsurface. The seafloor domes exhibits high backscatter feature, which is potentially associated with the seep‐related gas hydrate and authigenic carbonate in the shallow sediment. It is speculated that fault and diapir activity, fault sliding caused by region extension and the interaction between neighbour domes control and affect the activity and formation of the domes. Significant amounts of methane reside in sediments along the continental margins and slope of the Arctic Ocean. Methanotrophic bacteria oxidize methane to bicarbonate and also assimilate some methane‐derived carbon into biomass. Their metabolism transforms methane to other forms of carbon and sequesters it within the system, reducing its emission to the atmosphere. Increases in water temperatures driven by global climate change may accelerate the methane flux from the benthos into the water column, potentially increasing the importance of methanotrophic consumption as a methane sink. We report methane concentrations and oxidation rates in the water column of the Chukchi Sea from August 2017. This area is characterized by seasonally high nutrient concentrations that fuel high rates of pelagic primary productivity and subsequent sedimentation of organic matter, which stimulates benthic methanogenesis. Methane concentrations in the study area ranged from 6 to 72 nmol L−1, consistent with previously published measurements. Methane oxidation rates were as high as 580 pmol L−1 d−1, similar to the rates measured in the East Siberian Arctic Shelf. Depth‐integrated methane oxidation rates were lower than methane efflux rates, suggesting that physiochemical factors prevent the methanotrophic microbial community from efficiently removing methane from the ecosystem. The deep‐sea benthos covers over 90% of seafloor area and hosts a great diversity of species which contribute toward essential ecosystem services. Evidence suggests that deep‐seafloor assemblages are structured predominantly by their physical environment, yet knowledge of assemblage/environment relationships is limited. Here, we utilized a very large dataset of Northwest Atlantic Ocean continental slope peracarid crustacean assemblages as a case study to investigate the environmental drivers of deep‐seafloor macrofaunal biodiversity. We investigated biodiversity from a phylogenetic, functional, and taxonomic perspective, and found that a wide variety of environmental drivers, including food availability, physical disturbance (bottom trawling), current speed, sediment characteristics, topographic heterogeneity, and temperature (in order of relative importance), significantly influenced peracarid biodiversity. We also found deep‐water peracarid assemblages to vary seasonally and interannually. Contrary to prevailing theory on the drivers of deep‐seafloor diversity, we found high topographic heterogeneity (at the hundreds to thousands of meter scale) to negatively influence assemblage diversity, while broadscale sediment characteristics (i.e., percent sand content) were found to influence assemblages more than sediment particle‐size diversity. However, our results support other paradigms of deep‐seafloor biodiversity, including that assemblages may vary inter‐ and intra‐annually, and how assemblages respond to changes in current speed. We found that bottom trawling negatively affects the evenness and diversity of deep‐sea soft‐sediment peracarid assemblages, but that predicted changes in ocean temperature as a result of climate change may not strongly influence continental slope biodiversity over human timescales, although it may alter deep‐sea community biomass. Finally, we emphasize the value of analyzing multiple metrics of biodiversity and call for researchers to consider an expanded definition of biodiversity in future investigations of deep‐ocean life. Submarine canyons are common features on the northern South China Sea (SCS) continental slope. Three main submarine canyon systems were observed by multi‐beam investigation and evaluated by a pre‐existing sedimentary dataset. They include the Xisha Canyon Zone, Shenhu Canyon Zone, and Taiwan Canyon Zone on the northern SCS continental slope which developed from the middle Miocene to the present‐day. Previous analysis implied that an enriched oil‐gas accumulation formed under this region with distinct gravity anomalies or active tectonic activity. Previous interpretation and geodynamics studies have revealed the detailed sedimentary records and the coupled tectonic‐sedimentary processes. However, the timing and mechanism of formation of the canyons on the northern SCS slope are still poorly constrained and vigorously debated, especially the differences among three submarine canyons from west to east that requires allowances for a variety of conflicting datasets. Here, we adopt the high‐resolution multi‐beam relief map and seismic profiles from these three canyon systems to estimate if the SCS slope controlled geometric segmentation and differentiation of canyon formation mechanisms and times. For this purpose, we ascertained that these canyons were initially controlled by the NE‐ to NW‐trending faults as a better constraint on the sediment flow direction. All the submarine canyons in the northern SCS slope extend in a range from NE‐/N–S‐ to NW‐ and E–W‐trending directions associated with the SCS oceanic spreading and the subsequent subduction‐related deformation along the Manila Trench. Furthermore, the present‐day morphology of these canyons implies a remarkable tectonic jump from west to east in the SCS continental slope and a north‐westward recession of the continental slope. Apart from the neo‐tectonic faults, the sea‐level fluctuation, gas hydrate disassociation, sediment source, and transportation channel also yielded dynamic processes and preservation for the submarine canyons. We finally propose a coupling model of the sedimentary and tectonic processes and confirm the spatial and temporal evolution of mechanisms of these canyons. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
