To understand the Holocene sedimentary evolution of the Pearl River associated delta–estuary–shelf system, high‐resolution seismic data were acquired from Lingdingyang Bay to the inner shelf. A Pearl‐derived Holocene subaqueous clinoform developed over the pre‐Holocene incised channel/valley network. Overlying the Holocene ravinement surface, progradational highstand and acoustically semi‐transparent or transparent transgressive system tracts are separated by a maximum flooding surface. Restricted and thick in‐channel/in‐valley retrogressive deposits represent an earlier transgressive deposit. Displaying a westward‐oriented along‐shore extent, the highstand sediment accumulated asymmetrically within 30 m water depths, corresponding to a modern hydrodynamic environment. The wedge‐shaped highstand unit thickened landward with a depocentre (>15 m) located in western Lingdingyang Bay, possibly because of higher sediment trap efficiency inside the salinity front. Preliminary analyses suggest that the Pearl River has been trapping sediment to fill its extensive estuarine system for most of the Holocene and its sediment trap efficiency is greater since the sea‐level highstand. Since ca 7.5 ka bp, the total volume of highstand sediment accumulated in the entire delta‐estuary‐shelf dispersal system was approximately 128.36 × 109 m3. The calculated highstand riverine sediment flux was 16.01 to 16.50 Mt/yr. This value is equivalent to approximately one‐fifth of the flux that occurred prior to widespread dam construction and likely related to late‐Holocene intensified anthropogenic influence in South China. Since ca 7.5 ka bp, only ca 35% of the Pearl‐derived sediment has been dispersed to offshore shelf areas from the delta‐estuary system. With the dramatic decrease in river sediment discharge in recent decades, a larger fraction of Pearl‐derived sediment transported to the shelf might have been interrupted and changed. Intermontane deserts are an important type of arid‐climate sedimentary system. Although rare at present, the sedimentary records of intermontane deserts reveal their widespread development in past greenhouse periods, and they might develop in the near future in response to ongoing global warming. Determination of the provenance of sand supplied for the construction of intermontane deserts is important to gain improved understanding of the potential impact of future climate on environmental evolution in arid and semi‐arid regions. During the Cretaceous, a typical intermontane desert developed in the Xinjiang Basin, south‐east China. In this study, the origin, spatial variability, and transport pathways of both aeolian and alluvial–fluvial sediments in the Xinjiang intermontane desert are investigated by analyses of bulk‐rock petrography and detrital‐zircon U–Pb geochronology. These results demonstrate that the sand in the Xinjiang intermontane desert succession was mainly of extraneous origin and wind‐derived. The nearby South China Block and South China Magmatic Belt were primary sources, and the 1000 km distant western margin of Yangtze Block was an important secondary source. During the Late Cretaceous, the westerlies were stronger in the northern than in the southern hemisphere with doubled wind speeds. In such a climatic context, the results herein suggest that the ultra‐long‐distance aeolian sediment transport was likely further enabled by two factors: (i) the strengthening of intermittent westerly winds during short‐lived glacial episodes; and (ii) the presence of a low‐relief corridor that served as a transport pathway from source to sink. Hyperpycnal flow deposits, one of the most important deep‐water gravity‐flow deposits in lacustrine basins, have become the research focus in recent years. However, the sedimentary characteristics and depositional model of hyperpycnal flow deposits in lacustrine basins remain unclear due to the differences of depositional settings between lacustrine and marine environments. Hyperpycnal flow deposits observed in the middle of the third member of the Shahejie Formation (Es3z) in the Bonan Sag, Bohai Bay Basin, Eastern China, provide a rare case study to reveal the characteristics and depositional model in lacustrine basins. For the first time, detailed core analysis, high‐resolution 3D seismic data, petrology and grain size analysis were used to unravel the characteristics and depositional model of hyperpycnal flow deposits in this study. Twelve lithofacies, six bed types and four bedsets (corresponding to feeder channel, distributary channel, levee and lobe) were recognized from detailed facies analysis. Plant fragment, an important identification mark for hyperpycnal flow deposits, can be classified into three types: completely broken plant fragments, partially broken plant fragments and complete leaves. The proximal part of the deposit develops a small amount of scattered and completely broken plant fragments in massive or spaced stratified pebbly sandstone and massive sandstone due to strong erosion of sustained high‐density turbidity current. The medial part of the deposit is dominated by laminated partially broken plant fragments in planar laminated or rippled sandstone due to suspended settling of sustained high‐density turbidity current and quasi‐steady low‐density turbidity current. Layered partially broken plant fragments with some complete leaves are common in the upper part mud rich division of hybrid event bed and laminated siltstone in the distal part of the deposit. The distribution pattern of hyperpycnites is controlled comprehensively by palaeogeomorphy and sediment supply. Palaeogullies determine the provenance direction of hyperpycnal flow. The formation of synsedimentary faults and troughs control the transport routing patterns. Local micro‐palaeogeomorphy and depression areas further restrict the distribution of sand bodies. During the early stage of deposition with insufficient sediment supply, sediments are transported to the deep basin along confined faulted troughs forming elongated sandy bodies. During the late stage of deposition with sufficient sediment supply, sediments are transported to the deep basin without confinement accumulating fan‐shaped sandy bodies. Through a field experiment on a sandy beach at Pingtan, China, we propose the first model to characterize the variability of apparent von Kármán parameter κa ${\kappa }_{a}$ in the thermally and sedimentologically stratified air flows. The model shows that κa ${\kappa }_{a}$ is negatively correlated to flux Richardson number as well as sediment transport rate. The atmospheric stability can be either from thermal stratification or sedimentological stratification, neglecting either of them can lead to substantial errors in predicting shear velocity and sediment transport rate. Plain Language Summary: In natural conditions, atmospheric boundary layer flows are often non‐neutral due to thermal stratification. However, recent studies indicate sedimentological stratification may also have a similar effect while almost no research was conducted to examine their combined effect on the flows. We present the first model to characterize the apparent von Kármán parameter κa ${\kappa }_{a}$, a parameter representing the scale of flow eddy size, as a function of thermal and sedimentological stabilities. This work provides a feasible means to correct the potentially substantial errors when estimating shear velocity and predicting sediment transport rate for sedimentologically and thermally stratified air flows. In many modern deep‐water slope environments, deposits formed by bottom currents (contourites) are rather common. However, reports on ancient contourites in deep‐water environments are scarce and most of them remain contentious. Based on the study of high‐resolution sedimentological, sedimentary geological and magnetic fabric characteristics, this study presents the key evidence of bottom current activity in the Middle Ordovician Kelimoli Formation from the western margin of the North China craton, and reconstructs the deep‐sea circulation pattern and the direction of deep‐water bottom currents in the middle and low latitudes during the Middle Ordovician. Six typical carbonate microfacies are identified in the Kelimoli Formation, which can be grouped into three sedimentary facies types related to the main interpreted depositional processes (bottom current, undifferentiated bottom current and hemipelagic settling, and hemipelagic settling). The evidence of bottom current deposits are five‐fold. Firstly, it is possible to observe a variety of traction current structures, which mainly represent bed‐load‐dominated transport of sediments. Secondly, there are multi‐scale inverse grading and bi‐grading, as well as inversely‐graded and normally‐graded sedimentary sequences, which reflect the periodic change of bottom current activity. Thirdly, gradual or sharp contact boundaries and small internal erosional surfaces indicate omission surfaces caused by the oscillating variation of bottom current velocity. Fourthly, the continuous rhythmic change of sedimentary fabrics on the microscopic scale reflects sustained, waxing and waning current intensities. Fifthly, the anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility reveals the microscopic fabric characteristics of imbricated magnetic grains, which represent the continuous action of directional current, and the restored palaeocurrent direction indicates that the current is mainly parallel to the slope strike. After the palaeo‐north correction of the North China craton clockwise rotation of 120° to 150° since the Ordovician, anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility shows that the direction of bottom current in the study area is towards the north‐east/east. Therefore, it is speculated that there was a clockwise deep‐water circulation in the middle and low latitudes of the southern hemisphere during the Ordovician. This study not only provides sedimentological evidence for the Ordovician bottom current activity, but also contributes to a better understanding of the Ordovician palaeoceanographical environment, especially the Middle Ordovician deep‐sea circulation pattern. Subaqueous mass‐transport processes are one of the mechanisms for transport of sediment into the deep sea. Internal structures and depositional processes of carbonate mass‐transport deposits are relatively poorly understood relative to siliciclastic facies due to their comparative paucity in the rock record. A variety of carbonate mass‐transport deposits, including slumps, debrites and deep‐channel‐confined density flow deposits, occur in Middle–Upper Ordovician slope deposits in western Inner Mongolia (Wuhai), China. These provide a rare opportunity to illustrate the emplacement history of carbonate mass‐transport deposits at the outcrop scale. The slumps and debrites host remarkable folds, chaotic beds and imbricated beds that reflect differences in both rheology and position on the slope. Individual slump sheets show gradations between undulating laminae, inclined and recumbent folds, highly deformed folds, and chaotic textures upslope from the toe region. Debrites are commonly interbedded with slump deposits, whereas imbricated beds are present in the middle and lower parts of the toes of slump sheets near the terminal wall. In the study area, thin‐bedded limestone with slump deposits of the Kelimoli Formation are overlain by fine‐grained, siliciclastic‐dominated, slope deposits of the Wulalike Formation. A thick breccia of the Wulalike Formation was deposited in a main feeder channel in south‐east Wuhai, but to the west‐north‐west the breccia was deposited in distributary channels possibly represented as a unique lower‐slope pattern of gullies. At the latter locality, the breccia was deposited solely within the channels on a steep west‐north‐west dipping slope under density‐driven flows. The mass‐transport deposits documented herein records passive to foreland basin tectonic transitions, and associated platform foundering and steepening of the slope. A slope facies model was constructed to demonstrate the spatial and temporal variations of mass‐transport deposits during basin evolution, and as such it provides a template for the interpretation of the deposits of ancient slopes that underwent passive to active tectonic transitions. Groundwater plays a major role in the hydrological processes driven by climate change and human activities, particularly in upper mountainous basins. The Jinsha River Basin (JRB) is the uppermost region of the Yangtze River and the largest hydropower production region in China. With the construction of artificial cascade reservoirs increasing in this region, the annual and seasonal flows are changing and affecting the water cycles. Here, we first infer the groundwater storage changes (GWSC), accounting for sediment transport in JRB, by combining the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment mission, hydrologic models and in situ data. The results indicate: (1) the average estimation of the GWSC trend, accounting for sediment transport in JRB, is 0.76 ± 0.10 cm/year during the period 2003 to 2015, and the contribution of sediment transport accounts for 15%; (2) precipitation (P), evapotranspiration (ET), soil moisture change, GWSC, and land water storage changes (LWSC) show clear seasonal cycles; the interannual trends of LWSC and GWSC increase, but P, runoff (R), surface water storage change and SMC decrease, and ET remains basically unchanged; (3) the main contributor to the increase in LWSC in JRB is GWSC, and the increased GWSC may be dominated by human activities, such as cascade damming and climate variations (such as snow and glacier melt due to increased temperatures). This study can provide valuable information regarding JRB in China for understanding GWSC patterns and exploring their implications for regional water management. Liaodong Bay Depression is a strike‐slip basin with complex tectonic movement that lead the source‐to‐sink (S2S) systems evolution vary greatly in temporal and spatial characteristics. This study explored the sedimentary characteristics, dispersal patterns, and pathway formation in Liaodong Bay Depression, as well as their controlling factors. We selected more than 10 pathways with north‐west and north‐east directions in Liaoxi Sag in the western part of Liaodong Bay Depression, a typical strike‐slip bet controlled graben, to investigate their S2S system distribution. By combining seismic data, we divided the strike‐slip fault bends into three stress setting parts, namely, a central restraining bend, which is the fault translation part, and two releasing bends in the southern and northern of fault terminals. As the heavy mineral assemblage and clay content in the west side of Liaoxi Sag differs from that in the east side, we put forward an S2S index to show the sediment transport distance according to the data we have obtained. Using this index, we recovered the dispersal pattern and pathway development and speculated on the sedimentary provenance. In the restraining bend, we recognized that the pathways mainly show a symmetrical "V" or "W" shape with unclear erosion boundaries and were dominated by filling processes. Considering the heavy mineral assemblage data, we also found that the sediment provenance area decreased and the sediment provided direction transferred from the two‐side provenance to one. Combining the fast sedimentary rate calculated with clay content data, the S2S systems in this area were steep–wide–deep systems and a wide and shallow system. In the releasing bend, the pathways show an asymmetrical "V" or "W" shape and a clear erosional boundary. As shown by the heavy mineral assemblage data, the sediments from these areas mainly have a west side provenance and were deposited in the proximal area. Thus, the S2S system in this area is a kind of steep–deep system. Then, the investigation by integrated of tectonic movement and S2S geomorphic statistical parameters revealed that the elevation height of the S2S is a key factor in control pattern development. Deep‐water deposits in marine basins have recently received considerable research attention. However, the controls of sediment transported to deep‐lacustrine environments are comparatively understudied. In this study, we utilize field‐based outcrop data to investigate the variability of sediment distribution and its controlling factors in the Lower Cretaceous synrift Xiguayuan Formation in the Luanping Basin. Two fan‐delta systems with variability dominate the measured outcrop sections. At the lithological scale, the ratio of conglomerate to strata in the Xiyuan fan‐delta system is 87%, and the average thickness of individual coarse‐grained layers is ~1 m; the corresponding values in the Caoying fan‐delta system are 52% and 0.4 m. In addition, sand‐rich gravity‐flow deposits are developed in front of the Xiyuan fan delta, whereas mud‐rich mass transport deposits (i.e., sliding block and slumping debris) are found in front of the Caoying fan delta. At the stratigraphical scale, a delta succession in the Xiyuan section characterized by sand‐rich facies from proximal to distal parts is developed in a relatively steep slope setting. In the Caoying section, however, a delta succession characterized by sand‐rich facies in the proximal to middle parts is found in addition to a mud‐rich distal part developed in a gentle slope setting. Differential sediment supply resulted in significant variation in the sediment distribution pattern. In particular, the grain size of the fan‐delta front controls that of the deep‐lacustrine gravity‐flow deposits fed by them. Sequences of wave‐enhanced sediment‐gravity flows (WESGFs) have been widely recognized in the marine shelf environment. In this study, we show observations of WESGF deposits in lacustrine settings using well core and thin section data from the Paleogene in the Jiyang sub‐basin, Bohai Bay basin, eastern China. The findings of this study include the following: 1) the sequence of WESGFs in the lacustrine basin is similar to that of marine; it consists of three units, MF1 unit: siltstone with basal erosion surface, MF2 unit: silt‐streaked claystone, and MF3 unit: silty‐mudstone; and 2) prodelta sand sheets are found in the lacustrine WESGF sequence and are classified as the MFd unit: clay‐streaked siltstone. However, because the system size and variability in hydrodynamic conditions are different between the lacustrine and marine basins, lacustrine WESGFs do appear to have three distinguishable features: 1) the sediment grain size and sand content are slightly higher than those of the marine WESGFs; 2) lacustrine WESGFs may contain prodelta sediments or sedimentary sequences of other types of gravity flows, such as hyperpycnal flows; and 3) the scale of the sedimentary structures for lacustrine WESGFs is smaller. The WESGFs found in the continental lacustrine basin provide a new model for sediment dispersal processes in lake environments and may be helpful to explain and predict the distribution of sandy reservoirs for oil and gas exploration. The Yellow River in China carries large amounts of sediments in suspension at concentrations up to several hundreds of kilograms per cubic metre; the sediment is composed mainly of silt. These high sediment concentrations influence the hydrodynamics (flow velocity and turbulence) which, in turn, determine the sediment concentration profile, whereas both the high sediment concentrations and pseudo-cohesive properties of silt determine the morphodynamics of the Yellow River. The effect of sediment on the hydrodynamics is analysed using the Richardson number and the Reynolds number to provide a framework to differentiate between various flow regimes in the Yellow River, which is calibrated and validated with Yellow River data. The flow may be sub-saturated (stable flow), super-saturated (unstable flow characterized by high deposition rates, caused by collapse of turbulence), or hyperconcentrated sub-saturated (stable flow because of hindered settling effects), depending on the Richardson number. Independent of this, the flow may be turbulent, transitional or laminar, depending on the Reynolds number. Analysis of these flow types improves understanding of the flow regimes and morphodynamics of the Yellow River. The morphodynamics of the Yellow River are also affected by pseudo-cohesive behaviour caused by shear dilatance, which results in increasing critical shear stress for erosion at decreasing grain-size. This pseudo-cohesive behaviour may be partly responsible not only for the high deposition rates which characterize the lower Yellow River, but also for mass erosion during river floods. DOI: 10.1111/jawr.12002 Abstract: Significant channel adjustments often occur during flood seasons in the Lower Yellow River (LYR), and it is a challenging work to accurately simulate the morphodynamic processes in the LYR using numerical models. A comparison of two morphodynamic models (Delft3D and 2DLLCDM) for the LYR is presented herein to identify critical improvements for these models. The concepts of these models are first compared with each other. The models were then used to simulate the processes of flood routing, sediment transport, and morphological changes occurring in a braided reach of the LYR. The differences were investigated between the simulated results from these models and corresponding field measurements, and the results indicate that: (1) the hydrodynamic processes calculated by both models agree closely with the measurements if an appropriate Manning's roughness coefficient is used; (2) the concentrations of suspended load at the downstream boundary calculated by the models agree reasonably with the observed data; and (3) the predicted cross-sectional profiles obtained from these models do not correspond well with the measurements. Based on these findings, the weak aspects of the models are clarified, and three critical improvements are recommended, including: (1) the development of roughness predictor; (2) the refinement of graded sediment transport capacity formulation; and (3) the consideration of bank erosion module.
