Objective: There is a growing interest in how people living with dementia may achieve good outcomes and be resilient despite their health challenges. Understanding what might be important for resilience in this population is largely untested theory.Methods: The analysis draws a subsample with cognitive impairment (N = 579) from two waves of the Cognitive Function and Ageing Studies Wales study, a nationally representative study of community-dwelling people aged 65+ in Wales. We constructed a measure of mental health resilience (MHR) defined as no depression, no anxiety and high well-being. Drawing on a resilience framework, we tested univariate and cumulative effects models of the factors that enable MHR, and then examined whether MHR is important for reducing loneliness over time.Results: Across both waves of data 22% (n = 121) met the criteria for MHR. The cumulative effects model found the odds of MHR were greater for male gender, higher self-esteem, greater social resources and no subjective memory complaints. Controlling for these significant predictors, MHR significantly predicted lower total and sub-scale scores for loneliness at wave 2. Sensitivity analysis shows these effects held at lower levels of cognitive function when the Mini-Mental State Examination score was <25, but not at <23.Conclusions: This paper addresses a gap in research regarding the conceptualisation and measurement of resilience when facing cognitive impairment. Understanding what aspects of a person's life might enable good mental health despite cognitive impairment-to be resilient-could inform effective strategies for friends and families, along with health, and social policy and practice. This paper aims to fill this gap by discussing how in one area of Wales a participatory workshop was held to try and identify priority areas for research. By sharing our experiences, we hope that other people will be encouraged to try similar approaches. This paper draws on a series of life-history interviews with 16 young adults who were all formerly looked-after children. Eight young men and eight young women aged 17 to 25 took part in the study in Wales, UK. They had experienced a wide range of circumstances at home, in care and after care. They were contacted through a self-advocacy organization and other care leavers' groups. The paper explores how insights from the sociology of the family can serve to enhance understandings of these young people's life stories and, additionally, how their lived experiences can contribute to this sociological field. Key themes explored in the paper include the emotional co-presence of the birth family for children living in substitute care, the dynamic nature of experiences and perceptions of family relationships through the life course, the importance of siblings and the insightful reflections of participants on the challenges of learning to 'do' family across childhoods marked by nomadism. The paper concludes that a holistic theoretical approach that embraces 'psy' and sociological understandings of families and relationships will be most productive for researchers, practitioners and families. Choice is often presented as a defining feature of play and it has been argued that a perception of choice contributes to the developmental potential of play. This paper investigates children's self-recorded levels of choice during play across three contexts-the home, the school playground and the out-of-school club. Children recorded their play activities across contexts using a structured diary technique. Findings based on 401 reported play episodes indicated that choice varied across contexts, according to the number of children involved and whether or not an adult was present. Mental health nurses have traditionally been discouraged from engaging with service users' experiences of hearing voices and to reinforce reality. However, this may not be a helpful way of intervening in what can be a very distressing symptom. There is little evidence of service users' experiences of community mental health nurses' (CMHNs) responses to their voices. This paper presents the findings of an exploratory interview study of a sample (n = 20) of service users to ascertain their perception of CMHN responses to their experience of hearing voices. Data are both quantitative and qualitative in nature. Content analysis of the qualitative elements of the study suggests responses can be conceptualized as facilitators, barriers and attributions. CMHNs are considered to be allies and the quality of the relationship is deemed important. The therapeutic repertoire of CMHNs, however, is seen as limited and rarely extends beyond facilitating access to the psychiatrist for review of medication. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The recent emphasis on community care for those with mental illness has changed working patterns and modified inter-professional role boundaries within multi-disciplinary teams. Clients with serious mental illness are usually prescribed medications, which have a wide range of side effects. However, it is uncertain who is responsible for monitoring clients for the side effects of their medications, ensuring clients' and carers' understandings of their prescribed medications and optimizing compliance with medication. This paper discusses the findings of the first phase of an ongoing study designed to assess the role of community mental health nurses (CMHNs) in managing clients' medication and the provision of appropriate continuing professional education. Our respondents were 14 CMHNs, seven of whom were preparing to undertake a pharmacology module as part of a higher education diploma, and seven who were to act as comparators. Data from questionnaires, interviews and clinical observations were triangulated. All respondents felt that issues surrounding clients' medication were not accorded a sufficiently high profile and that it was, in part, their responsibility to expand their roles to meet these unmet needs of clients. Administering and managing clients' medications were considered to be the main area of 'occupational territory' which distinguished CMHNs from social workers. This paper describes an analysis of results from a questionnaire (Giles, 1987) which requested information on the status of game fish stocks (especially wild brown trout Salmo trutta L.) from those Game Conservancy members who own or manage fisheries. Also included are data arising from fishery log book records which are used to indicate trends in brown trout catch per unit effort (CPUE) over past decades. 2. The key finding from questionnaire returns was the widespread reporting of apparent declines of wild brown trout stocks in a total of twenty-seven sites throughout Britain. The affected waters are geographically widespread from the south-west of England through southern and south-east England, south Wales, northern England and Scotland including the Western Isles. Suspected stock declines of migratory (sea) trout, salmon Salmo salar L. and grayling Thymallus thymallus L. were also reported. Where brown trout occur alone, a significantly higher proportion of questionnaire returns recorded a stock decline compared with fisheries containing both brown and rainbow trout Salmo gairdneri Richardson. 3.
