Using Camellia oleifera shell as raw materials to preparative SiC ceramics by warm‐press forming and sintering is proposed in this paper. Warm‐press forming before preparing for the C. oleifera shell‐based SiC ceramics is beneficial to obtain the internal uniform and suitable pore structure of the cylindrical sample. Thermogravimetric analysis with differential scanning calorimetry was applied to analyze the pyrolysis behavior of C. oleiefra shell and phenolic resin. The scanning electron microscope and X‐ray diffraction were used to investigate the properties of C. oleifera shell‐based SiC ceramics. Then, the response surface method was applied to establish a multivariate prediction model based on the process parameters of warm‐press forming. And the regression equations of porosity and bending strength of COS‐SiC are obtained. The result demonstrated that the predicted and experimental values can be in good agreement for the model. By comparing the F‐value, it is found that the forming temperature and pressure during the process of warm‐press forming have a more significant influence on the porosity and bending strength of SiC ceramics. 3D printing has witnessed a remarkable surge in popularity due to its flexibility in design and adaptability as a manufacturing technique to nearly each industrial area. This study focuses on harnessing the technological versatility of 3D printing by utilizing both standard poly lactic acid (PLA) and copper powder‐doped PLA to fabricate intricate structures through a layer‐by‐layer additive manufacturing process. The other innovation introduced here lies in the postprocessing step, which involves salt remelting. The mechanical properties of 3D‐printed standard test specimens undergo comprehensive assessment, encompassing bending and tensile evaluations, hardness measurements, density assessments, dimensional stability analyses, and wear resistance examinations. Utilizing copper powder‐doped PLA for the initial and final layers in XYZ‐oriented prints enables multimaterial printing, resulting in an ≈14% increase in tensile strength. Subsequently, subjecting this multimaterial composite to salt remelting elevates the strength enhancement to ≈16%, accompanied by a significant boost in rigidity by reducing voids in cross‐sectional area. In addition, scanning electron microscope images are captured, allowing for a detailed morphological analysis, which is then correlated with the findings of the various tests performed. The present study focuses on how microalgae protein biomass, such as spirulina (SP), can be used to create thermoplastic blends and algal‐based bioplastics. Algal bioplastics can be customized for a variety of material properties and applications while remaining biodegradable. In this work, the casting approach has been performed to create spirulina‐starch‐glycerol composite films by adding SP to plasticized starch films. The characteristics and properties of the composite films were inspected by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), tensile strength, antimicrobial activity, and biodegradation analysis. The composite film with 3% SP was found to have the best combination of mechanical and chemical properties, and additional SP causes the mechanical properties to degrade. The results demonstrated that bio‐composites prepared by plasticized starch and containing SP could be promising in the development of new environmentally friendly bio‐nanocomposites for interesting applications in food packaging. Spark plasma sintering (SPS) is a new sintering method having shorter sintering time and higher densification speed than the traditional sintering methods. In this paper, the Si3N4/TiC ceramic tool material is sintered by SPS. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the material under different sintering parameters are compared. The sintering process of the material is then analyzed, and the best sintering parameters are obtained. Heat the material to 1600°C and keep the temperature for 15 min, then continue to heat to 1700°C and keep the temperature for 10 min, Si3N4/TiC ceramic tool material has high mechanical properties, its bending strength, fracture toughness, and Vickers hardness are 959 MPa, 8.61 MPa·m1/2, and 15.21 GPa, respectively. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis shows that under this condition, the sintering additives and Si3N4/TiC material form the liquid phase, which makes the Si3N4 particles rearrange, dissolve, precipitate, and transform into rod shape β‐Si3N4. In addition, under the action of pulse current and external pressure, electric sparks are generated between TiC particles, which allows the material transfer and particle refinement. Therefore, the β‐Si3N4 has uniform grain size, and it is vertically and horizontally arranged in the structure, which makes the material have excellent mechanical properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, a novel biobased allyl compound with Schiff‐based structure (MPAM) was developed to improve the toughness and thermal properties of 4,4′‐bismaleimidodiphenylmethane (BDM). The chemical structure of MPAM was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR). A series of BDM/DBA‐MPAM blend resins (BD‐MPAM resins) were prepared by adjusting the mass ratio of BDM + DBA (BD) to MPAM. The effects of MPAM content on the curing behavior, thermal and mechanical properties of BD‐MPAM resins were discussed in details. Compared with BD resin, the thermal stability of modified resins was improved by increasing the content of MPAM. Meanwhile, an increase of 37.1% in flexural strength, and 228 MPa in flexural modulus were obtained for the cured BD‐MPAM resin having 10 wt% MPAM loading compared to the BD resin. The impact strength of BD‐10 wt% MPAM is of the maximum value (6.6 kJ/m2). Finally, the fracture surface morphology of the BD‐MPAM resins was studied by the scanning electron microscope (SEM). Chitosan (CS) fibers have been applied in various fields due to their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and antibacterial properties. However, weak mechanical properties remain as obstacles to further applications. Silk nanofibrils (SNFs) extracted from natural silk fibroin fibers preserve outstanding mechanical properties at the nanoscale, which are expected to impact structural programming and mechanical reinforcement for CS fibers. In this study, wet‐spun CS/SNFs composite fibers were continuously collected from NaOH/ethanol coagulation. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) results showed that SNFs were uniformly distributed in the CS matrix, and obvious orientation was observed when the mass ratio of SNF/CS was 75/100. Tensile tests showed that the introduction of SNFs significantly enhanced the mechanical properties of CS fibers when the mass ratio of SNF/CS was more than 25/100. With the increasing of SNF content, the tensile strength gradually increased, and the tensile strength and modulus could be increased 2.9 times and 3.5 times, respectively, when 100% SNF was added. The improvement of mechanical properties was partially attributed to hydrogen bonding between SNF filaments and CS, which was confirmed by FTIR and XRD results. Reduced graphene oxide (RGO) is an effective polymer filler for shielding against electromagnetic interference (EMI). Its shielding efficiency rises as its concentration in polymer matrices increases. However, higher filler loading impedes polymer foaming and deteriorates the mechanical properties of the resulting foam. The goal of this work is to determine the optimal RGO concentration that can be loaded into polyurethane (PU) matrix to produce a composite foam with a high level of electromagnetic shielding along with good mechanical properties. To that end, different PU foam samples containing varying amounts of RGO were synthesized. The synthesized samples were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infra‐red (FT/IR) and universal testing machine. Furthermore, the shielding efficiency of the samples was measured using a vector network analyzer over the frequency range of 8–12 GHz. The results revealed that the increase in RGO concentration enhances the mechanical and thermal properties of the prepared composite foam materials. The shielding effectiveness reached −23 dB at 5 wt% RGO concentration. In the present work, an experimental investigation is performed to study the influence of process parameters on mechanical properties of tetra‐anti‐chiral auxetic structures manufactured by material extrusion (ME) technique of additive manufacturing (AM). Process parameters namely layer height, print speed, and print temperature are considered, while responses are compressive strength (σ), modulus (E), and specific energy absorption (SEA). Specimens of acrylonitrile‐butadiene‐styrene (ABS) polymer are fabricated and then tested under compressive loading. From the experimental results, it is observed that all process parameters significantly influence the mechanical properties of the structure. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) is used to study microstructural defects of the tested specimen. In the present work, we studied the formation of sunflower oil nanoemulsion using ultrasound techniques. Later, we investigated the development of active films based on a mixture of whey protein containing sunflower oil base nanoemulsion with different concentrations (10, 25, and 50% of total whey protein). The prepared film was by analyzing using the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X‐ray diffraction (XRD), and field‐emission scanning electron microscope (FE‐SEM). The film shows no changes in its integrity and crystallinity compared to the virgin film. The presence of nanoemulsion improves the mechanical properties from 2.75 MPa to 3.52 MPa while it decreases the water vapor permeability from 3.4 × 10–10 to 1.3 × 10−10g/m.s.Pa for concentrations NE (50% of Whey protein). The antioxidant activity for Tween 20 nanoemulsion is 38.7% compared to 36.1% for Tween 80 nanoemulsion. The antimicrobial activity of the film contains sunflower nanoemulsion higher than virgin films. In this paper, SiC coating was prepared using the polymer‐derived ceramic method; then the effect of nano‐alumina as a filler material was studied. First of all, polycarbosilane(PCS) was dissolved in xylene; after that, different amounts of nano‐alumina particles were added to the solution. The coating was deposited on the alumina substrate using the dip‐coating method; this was followed by sintering at 1200℃. The phase content and microstructure of the samples were studied by X‐ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope methods, respectively. Nanohardness, Young's modulus, and coating adhesion were investigated by a nanoindentation method. The sheet resistance was evaluated using the four‐point probe technique; also, the wear resistance of the coating was studied by applying the pin‐on‐disk method. It was found that the addition of the nano‐alumina filler up to 20 wt% drastically improved the adhesion and wear resistance of the SiC coating. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To measure mechanical properties of dental soft liners in tensional stress to identify their suitability as human oral mucosa simulant materials. Methods: Eleven different dental elastomers were subjected to tensile testing to obtain their tensile strength and elastic moduli (n = 15/group) according to the ISO‐527 method. Fractured surfaces of one specimen per sample group were examined under the light microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy (EDS) was performed for the elemental analysis or chemical characterization of each sample group. The obtained data were quantitatively and qualitatively analysed. They were also statistically analysed using SPSS version 25. Results: The tensile strength of dental elastomers ranged from 0.43 MPa (±0.09) to 7.41 MPa (±1.11) and had statistically significant differences between tested groups (p = 0.001). Vertex soft heat‐cure soft liner, GC impression silicones and Silagum soft liners were found to have tensile strengths close to that of the oral mucosa reported by previous studies. SEM analysis revealed that the elastomers with higher filler contents showed rough fractured surface with plucking of particles after tensile fracture. Conclusion: This is the first study assessing the suitability of dental elastomers as human oral mucosa simulant materials which can be used for in vitro, mathematical modeling and finite element analysis (FEA) to study masticatory force distribution in oral mucosa. Out of 11 studied, six (Vertex Soft, GC heavy and Light body, Molloplast B, Algin X Ultra and Exaclear) dental elastomers showed similar mechanical properties to the Theil embalmed gingival tissues. Vertex Soft, GC Light body, and Molloplast B may be used for the majority of oral mucosal model when considering tensile strength as the primary factor for mechanical stimulation. A 3D architecture carbon fiber preform, specifically fine‐woven cloth and punctured felt preform, is used to manufacture a novel advanced Cf/C‐SiC‐ZrC composite. The composite matrix is produced by chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) plus precursor infiltration and pyrolysis (PIP) process and finalized by using a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of SiC coating to make the final density of the material reach 1.95 g/cm3. The organic precursors of SiC and ZrC have a weight ratio of 4:1 in a xylene solute. The composite mechanical properties, such as tensile, compression, bending, shear, and Z‐direction load bearing, are introduced under analysis to find possible applications for the composite. What is more, scanning electron microscope (SEM) images are employed to illustrate the failure behavior of the ceramic composite. The results showed that the punctured filament tows will be beneficial, not only for the composite to withstand compression force up to 308.6 MPa and shear strength to 18.14 MPa but also for the alternatively stacked weave piles and short fiber layers to support the punctured bundles, as well as to hold the composite structure under mechanical forces from different orientations, which is believed to reinforce the ceramic matrix for some high pressure and severe ablation applications. The hardness and toughness of regenerated cemented carbides, in general, are contradictory. Therefore, it is critical to explore regenerated cemented carbides with both high hardness and high toughness. In this study, regenerated WC‐8‐wt% Co cemented carbide with SiC nanowhisker were prepared by low‐pressure sintering. The influence of SiCw contents on the microstructure and mechanical properties of regenerated WC‐8‐wt% Co cemented carbide was investigated. The results indicated that the hardness, density, flexural strength, and fracture toughness of regenerated cemented carbide first increased and then decreased with the addition of SiCw. The Vickers hardness, density, flexural strength, and fracture toughness could reach 1575 HV, 14.6 g/cm3, 2204 MPa, 16.85 MPa·m1/2, respectively, with SiCw content 0.5 wt%, which were increased by 14.4%, 0.7%, 12.2%, and 17.3%, respectively, when compared with the regenerated cemented carbide without SiCw. The lowest friction coefficient and the best wear resistance could be also reached when 0.5‐wt% SiCw was added. The fracture mechanism of the regenerated cemented carbide contained both transgranular and intergranular fracture through the microscopic observation of fracture surface via scanning electron microscope. Lattice structures are characterized by good mechanical efficiency because their particular geometry confers high strength and stiffness coupled to lightweight. These structures can be produced using a wide range of technologies, but the additive manufacturing ones are the most promising. In this work, the flexural properties of titanium alloy lattice structure made by means of electron beam melting process were investigated through the three‐point bending test, carried out with three different span lengths. It was found that the span length influenced the load–displacement trend; moreover, the lower skin failure was observed in all the test conditions considered, but for the shortest span, the indentation of upper skin was found, too. High performance carbon nanotube (CNT) nanopaper (NP) reinforced polyurethane (PU) nanocomposite coating with high potential for aerospace and automotive applications was successfully fabricated and evaluated in this work. Different PU formulations were used to fabricate nanocomposites to study the effect of hard segment content on resin infiltration and nanocomposite mechanical properties. The process window of PU infiltration into the CNT NP was established by rheology measurements and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). The micro‐structure morphology of the nanocomposite was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Uniform CNT distribution in PU matrix was observed in the high‐resolution SEM images, which indicated good resin impregnation quality. Based on mechanical properties and process window, a PU formulation was selected as matrix to fabricate NP/PU nanocomposite coating for carbon fiber/epoxy composites (CFPC) substrate. The flexural strength and impact resistance of the CFPC were significantly improved by 9% and 14.7% after applying the NP/PU nanocomposite coating. Aimed at industrial applications, a continuous nanopaper fabrication process was successfully demonstrated in this work. The present paper was aimed at understanding the effect of lath martensite submicrostructure quenched at different austenitizing temperature on the crack propagation behaviour. Different techniques were used to characterize the details of microstructure and submicrostructure. In‐situ tensile tests with scanning electron microscope were performed to observe the propagation of the crack. The results illustrated that packet size and block size increase almost linearly with the increasing austenitizing temperature. However, austenitizing temperature has no significant effect on the size of laths. Both of the packet size and the block size match the Hall–Petch relationship well with a correlation coefficient of 0.99. In macro tensile tests and in‐situ tension, the deflection angle of crack encountered with prior austenite grain boundary is higher than 60°, while it is lower than 90° for packet boundary and 60° for block boundary. The deflection angle of crack is relevant to the interface energy of the encountered boundaries. The interface energy of prior austenite grain boundary is higher than that of packet boundary because of the component difference, while the interface energy of packet boundary is higher than that of block boundary because of larger misorientation. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of surface treatments and artificial aging on surface roughness (Ra), phase transformation, and flexural strength of yttria‐stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystalline (Y‐TZP) ceramics. Two‐hundred and eighty specimens from four types of Y‐TZP were divided into seven groups, according to the surface treatments and aging used: control, air‐abrasion, air‐abrasion + aging, grinding, grinding + aging, erbium: yttrium‐aluminum‐garnet (Er:YAG) laser, Er:YAG laser + aging. The Ra values were measured using a profilometer. X‐ray diffraction (XRD) analysis was performed to determine phase transformation. Specimens were subjected to a three‐point bending test and loaded until fracture. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM) analyses were performed on one specimen per group. Grinding and air‐abrasion groups exhibited higher Ra values than the others (P < 0.05). The differences in the roughness and flexural strength values between the laser and control groups were not significant. For all materials, the highest amount of monoclinic phase was found after air‐abrasion. Grinding groups showed lower flexural strength values compared with the control groups (P < 0.05), while there was no significant difference between the control and air‐abrasion groups. Aging did not affect the roughness and flexural strength (P > 0.05). The grinding process is not recommended in clinical usage for Y‐TZP because of the remarkable decrease in flexural strength and reliability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mechanical and fatigue properties of heavy section solution–strengthened ferritic ductile iron (SSF‐DI) castings have been examined in this contribution. Amounts of silicon varying from 3.2 to 3.55 wt% have been used. The effect of antimony on counteracting the formation of chunky graphite has been evaluated. In order to estimate the influence of solidification defects (microshrinkage porosities or degenerated graphite particles) on the fatigue strength of the investigated materials, scanning electron microscope observations of the fracture surfaces and extreme value analysis of the crack initiating defect dimension, √area, have been performed. The propagation of the fatigue crack through the material has been observed by means of microstructural analysis of the cross sections of the fracture surfaces. It has been found that the treatment with Sb is useful to avoid the formation of degenerated graphite particles. Moreover, it has been observed that the most of the fatigue life is spent in the crack initiation stage, where the microshrinkage porosities play a major role. The presence of chunky graphite affects mostly the propagation stage. Finally, mechanical and fatigue properties of SSF‐DI have been compared with those obtained from traditional ductile cast iron specimens taken from the same casting geometry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: In this work, TiN‐based cermets with excellent performance and uniform microstructure were successfully manufactured by conventional vacuum sintering with 0‐5 wt% carbon addition at 1500°C. Influence of carbon addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of cermets was investigated by scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, X‐Ray diffraction, electron probe microanalysis, and mechanical tests. The results showed that small amount of carbon helped to improve significantly the wettability between TiN and Ni/Co, leading to well‐distributed structure and perfect core‐rim phases. As the carbon content increased from 0 to 5 wt%, mechanical properties of cermets increased initially, displayed a maximum and then decreased. For the experimental conditions considered, the cermets with 3 wt% carbon addition revealed best mechanical properties. The relative density, the transverse rupture strength, fracture toughness, and Rockwell hardness of the cermets were 99.78%, 1836 MPa, 14.7 MPa m1/2, and 88, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT The fatigue life of ZEK100 magnesium alloy in the phosphate buffered solution for various immersion intervals was investigated by experiments and theoretical predictions. The biodegradable behaviours of ZEK100 magnesium alloy were also studied. Microstructure observation showed that the corrosion behaviours were characterized by pitting corrosion. The corrosion rate decreased a lot in the initial 7 d and then almost stayed unchanged. After 28 d immersion, the elastic modulus almost kept stable, while the yield strength and the ultimate strength decreased a lot, which indicated that corrosion had important effects on the tensile mechanical properties. It showed that the fatigue life of the samples under the same stress conditions decreased with increasing immersion time under the asymmetric stress-controlled cyclic loading. Considering the effect of corrosion on the material failure, a modified fatigue life model was proposed for magnesium alloy under corrosion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Overused vegetable oils, which are considered to be a waste and available in huge quantities after frying processes, were directly ethoxylated using a conventional cheap catalyst in order to obtain an economically valuable ethoxylated product to replace the imported intermediate derivatives and at the same time the environment will be rid of one of its pollutants. Therefore, this work was devoted to exploring its application as a fatliquoring agent in the leather industry. Overused sunflower and olein oils were directly ethoxylated using ethylene oxide gas in the presence of 3% KOH catalyst at 180 °C for 20 h. The prepared products were applied as nonionic fatliquors. The fatliquoring process is the operation in which a fatty matter is introduced into the leather fibers. The results obtained showed that the prepared ethoxylated overused oils were effective fatliquors with high HLB values giving stable oil in water emulsion as well as high stability against acid, alkali and different metallic salts. The fatliquored leather had improved mechanical properties such as tensile strength and elongation at break. In addition, a significant enhancement of the texture of the treated leather by the two prepared fatliquors as indicated from the scanning electron microscope images was observed. Also the results indicated that ethoxylated overused sunflower oil gave better results than those of ethoxylated overused olein oil. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
