Search

For global template matching (GTM), which is commonly used in the positioning of rail fasteners, only the fastener template is used to search the global image in both two dimensions, which will result in errors in two dimensions, and the lower positioning accuracy will be caused. A positioning method for rail fasteners based on double template matching (DTM) is proposed in this paper, in which the double template contains the rail template and the fastener template. First, the rail template is used to scan the original image in horizontal dimension, and the squared Euclidean distance (SED) is used to obtain the rail positioning in the original image. Combining with the prior knowledge of the fastener template image, the image composed of the rail and the fastener can be obtained, which is called the Rail Area Map (RAM) in this paper. Then, after preprocessing the RAM and the fastener template image, the fastener template image is used to scan the RAM in vertical dimension, and the normalized correlation coefficient (NCC) is used to calculate the similarity between the template and the subgraph of the RAM to achieve precise positioning of the fastener. The proposed DTM method adopts a positioning strategy from coarse to fine, and two templates are used to complete different positioning tasks in their own dimension, respectively. Due to the rail can be precise positioned in horizontal dimension, the error of the fastener positioning in the horizontal dimension can be avoided, and thus, the positioning accuracy can be improved. This paper proposes a novel method based on continuum damage mechanics (CDM) and machine learning (ML) models to evaluate the vibration fatigue behavior of W1‐type railway fastener clips subjected to high‐frequency vibration. Firstly, static and fatigue tests are conducted on 60Si2Mn spring steel to acquire elastic modulus, tensile strength, and P‐S‐N curves. Subsequently, a CDM model is established, and numerical simulations are performed under various working conditions to obtain the fatigue characteristics of the clips. Finally, the ML model is trained using numerical simulation results, thereby establishing a mapping model between the working conditions and fatigue characteristics. The developed ML model demonstrates high accuracy in predicting the vibration fatigue life of the clips. Moreover, the Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAP) algorithm is employed to elucidate the ML model, revealing that the vibration frequency has a greater impact on the fatigue life of the clips compared to the vibration displacement. Under long-term temperature loading, long bridges stretch and deform, causing the beam and rail to move relative to each other. This phenomenon could cause a gradual slide of the rail relative to the fastener composite pad and ultimately results in the slipping out of the fastener pad at the end of the ballastless track bridge changes. The slipping out of the fastener composite pad changes the longitudinal resistance of the fastener and causes shock of the train on the rail structure due to direct contact between the rail and the tie, thus inhibiting the normal use of the line. In this paper, a reciprocating tensile test was carried out on a WJ-8 small resistance fastener to explore the breaking process of the fastener composite pad, identify the interaction mechanism of the fastener composite pad under the rail, and ultimately determine the influence of the pad on the longitudinal resistance of the fastener. The results show that the two factors that affect the longitudinal resistance of the fastener under reciprocating loading are the surface roughness and displacement of the fastener composite pad. While the surface roughness of the fastener composite pad is the main influencing factor in the early stage, the displacement of the composite pad has a greater impact on the later stage. Heavy-haul railway has been developed rapidly in many countries in the world due to its great social and economic benefits. One of the key technologies for heavy-haul railway is the reduction of vibration on the track structures and its surrounding due to impact load induced by the train in service. The vibration behaviors of two kinds of low-vibration track (LVT) systems for heavy-haul railway are investigated in this paper. Firstly, two indoor full-scale low-vibration track models (new LVT and traditional LVT), which include rail, fastener, bearing block, rubber boot, track slab, and foundation base, were constructed according to design drawings. Secondly, the vibration responses of the different track components under the impact excitation of a dropping wheelset were measured. Thirdly, the time-domain characteristics of each track component of the two LVTs were compared by the acquired vibration time-history curves. Finally, the frequency-domain distribution was analyzed, and the vibration reduction performance was evaluated by the comprehensive time-frequency analysis results. The results show the new LVT has lower vibration acceleration, shorter duration of vibration period, lower vibration frequency of track components, and most importantly an obvious vibration reduction effect on the ground. A typical aircraft panel is the assembly consisting of a multitude of thin and lightweight compliant parts. In panel assembly process, part-to-part locating scheme has been widely adopted in order to reduce fixtures. By this locating scheme, a part is located onto the pre-fixed part/subassembly by determinant assembly (DA) holes, and temporary fasteners (e.g., spring pin) are used for joining these DA hole-hole pairs. The temporary fasteners can fasten DA hole-hole pairs in the axial and radial directions of DA holes. The fastening in the radial directions is realized by the expansion of temporary fasteners. Although the usage of temporary fasteners helps reduce the positional differences between hole-hole pairs, their clamping forces thereby may lead to elastic deformation of compliant parts/subassemblies. Limited research has been conducted on such elastic deformation produced by temporary fastener and its influence on assembly dimensional quality. This paper proposes a novel rigid-compliant variation analysis method for aircraft panel assembly, incorporating the deformation in part-to-part locating process. Based on the kinematic theory and linear elasticity deformation assumption, the variation propagation through the locating process, as well as the entire assembly process of an aircraft panel, is formulated. Then, the statistical variation analysis is performed with Monte Carlo (MC) simulation. Finally, the proposed method is validated by a case study. The result shows the deformation in the part-to-part locating process significantly impacts the assembly variations, and our method can provide a more accurate and reliable prediction. A novel method is proposed for rail fastener detection based on millimetre‐wave (mmWave) radar, mmWave radar fastener counter (MMW‐FC), which can accurately detect and record the fasteners in real‐time as the train traverses its route. Under circumstances where GNSS signals remain unavailable for prolonged durations, precise train localisation can be accomplished by correlating the number of fasteners derived from this method with the corresponding track map. Initially, MMW‐FC utilises fast Fourier transform and adaptive beamforming to focus the energy reflected from fasteners. Subsequently, it applies an adaptive template‐matching algorithm to detect each fastener. Furthermore, by leveraging known fastener spacing and the average time for trains to pass adjacent fasteners, the Kalman filter can execute precise speed tracking, used as a speed reference when adjusting the matching template adaptively. The experimental results indicate that the proposed method can precisely count the fasteners the train encounters in diverse road and speed conditions. The fastener counter maintains the Counting Error less than 0.067%, the speed error stays below 1.8 km/h, and the maximum values of the mean absolute error and root mean square error for speed are 0.7337 and 0.9584 km/h, respectively. This study introduces a new structure of the magnetic lead screw (MLS) intended for wave energy conversion (WEC) applications. One of the key challenges in the application of MLS technology for wave energy lies in the manufacturing of its complicated ideal helix. Structural simplification and processing technology are quite essential in promoting the development of the magnet screw. This study proposes a new method for shaping the desired ideal helix in a simple way with parallelly magnetised magnets. This simple structure reduces manufacturing complexity while maintaining good force density. The magnets with parallel magnetisation are also easier and cheaper to manufacture than the magnets with radial magnetisation. A prototype is manufactured and tested in the laboratory. In addition, the electromagnetic performance of the new structure is evaluated as compared with the magnet screw with ideal helix using the three‐dimensional finite element analysis, verifying the advantages of the proposed structure. In this study, a nonlinear analysis method was proposed to evaluate the serviceability review of a rail fastening system on concrete slab track at railway bridge ends. The serviceability review of the end deck is time-consuming in that it is necessary to calculate the force of fasteners; also, the design is complex because of the many girders, fasteners, and loads. In addition, there is also a case in which a special, expensive fastening device is installed because the stiffness of the rail fastening device is assumed to be linear, and excessive design results are produced by the linear analysis method. In this study, a clamping force test of the fastening system was performed to confirm the real stiffness and the force versus displacement relationship. The test results were applied in the conventional linear analysis method and the proposed nonlinear analysis method to a railway bridge model specimen with concrete slab tracks. The results of the nonlinear analysis method considering the nonlinear stiffness of the rail fastening system through the clamping force test confirmed that the uplift force acting on the rail fastener was considerably reduced compared with that in the linear analysis method. During long-term operation, the blades of rod fastening rotor are very prone to fault and may cause uneven axial mass distribution. The dynamic characteristics of a multidisk rod fastening rotor with axial unbalance mass distribution are studied. A four-disk rod fastening rotor model was established by the lumped mass method. The mass unbalance on different disks was used to simulate blade faults in different parts, and nonlinear factors such as oil film force and disk contact effect were considered. The fourth-order Runge-Kutta method was used to solve the model, and the spectrum and axis trajectory curves were obtained. The influence of fault location and rotating speed on rotor dynamic characteristics was analysed when there were blade faults on two disks. The results show that a large, unbalanced mass will bring strong nonlinear characteristics. The rod fastening rotor may be in different motion states at different rotating speeds. When the fault position of two disks changes, the changes of bearing spectrum, axis trajectory, and phase difference have regularity. As a result of long-term pressure from train operations and direct exposure to the natural environment, rails, fasteners, and other components of railway track lines inevitably produce defects, which have a direct impact on the safety of train operations. In this study, a multiobject detection method based on deep convolutional neural network that can achieve nondestructive detection of rail surface and fastener defects is proposed. First, rails and fasteners on the railway track image are localized by the improved YOLOv5 framework. Then, the defect detection model based on Mask R-CNN is utilized to detect the surface defects of the rail and segment the defect area. Finally, the model based on ResNet framework is used to classify the state of the fasteners. To verify the robustness and effectiveness of our proposed method, we conduct experimental tests using the ballast and ballastless railway track images collected from Shijiazhuang-Taiyuan high-speed railway line. Through a variety of evaluation indexes to compare with other methods using deep learning algorithms, experimental results show that our method outperforms others in all stages and enables effective detection of rail surface and fasteners. The present work aimed at the problems of less negative samples and more positive samples in rail fastener fault diagnosis and low detection accuracy of heavy manual patrol inspection tasks. Exploiting the capacity of a Convolution Neural Network (CNN) to process unbalanced data to solve tedious and inefficient manual processing, a fault diagnosis method based on a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) and a Residual Network (ResNet) was developed. First, GAN was used to track the distribution of rail fastener failure data. To study the noise distribution, the mapping relationship between image data was established. Additional real fault samples were then generated to balance and extend the existing data sets, and these data sets were used as input to ResNet for recognition and detection training. Finally, the average accuracy of multiple experiments was used as the evaluation index. The experimental results revealed that the fault diagnosis of rail fastener based on GAN and ResNet could improve the fault detection accuracy in the case of a serious shortage of fault data. By analyzing the measured data of rail corrugation in a small radius curve track with Cologne fasteners, the typical passing frequencies of corrugation were obtained. Then, according to actual line conditions, the vehicle-track coupled model and rail material friction and wear model were established and simulated, and rail corrugation characteristics of the curved section were studied. The results show that the variation amplitude of creep force on the inside of a guiding wheelset is large, and it coincides with that of the saturated creep force partially and the coincident part appears periodically. The variation amplitude of creep force on the outside of the guiding wheelset is small, and it is approximately equal to that of the saturated creep force. In addition, the variation range of the wear depth curve on inner rail is mainly changing from 0 μm to 0.0014 μm, showing periodic wavy wear, and when the creep force is equal to the saturated creep force, the wear depth reaches the peak. The variation range of the wear depth curve on outer rail is mainly changing from 0.0005 μm to 0.0008 μm, showing uniform wear. Combined with the predicted profile of rail wear, it can be seen that the inner rail mainly suffers from corrugation on the top of rail and the outer rail mainly suffers from uniform wear on the side, which results in serious corrugation on inner rail and slight corrugation on outer rail. The frequency characteristics analysis of wear shows that the inner rail wear has characteristic frequencies similar to the passing frequencies. Modal analysis results show that the vibration of inner rail at the characteristic frequencies is greater than that of outer rail, which lead to the corrugation of the corresponding frequencies more easily. The wear growth rates at the characteristic frequencies are relatively large, which indicates that the wear at the corresponding frequencies will continue to develop and eventually form corrugation. This study proposes a magnetic lead screw (MLS) as a continuous propulsion device for the general transport system (GTS). By integrating the outer rotor machine with the MLS, it is possible to construct a high force design with the improved operating surface area. Initially, a brief statement of the novel GTS is given, leading to an introduction of the MLS. Besides, a scaled 2.6‐kN MLS demonstrator is presented to verify the propulsion principle and thrust force. Furthermore, the MLS design focuses on several types, which use different materials and magnetic structures. The three‐dimensional finite element analysis is used to optimise design, with the goal of force performance. Moreover, the shear stress, cost‐effectiveness, magnetic losses, and mechanical stress of the different topologies are compared, revealing that the MLS made by ferrite magnet is more suitable for employed in GTS applications. This work examines the fatigue behaviour of additive cold spray (CS) repairs of AA7075 and AA2024 fastener holes. Structural ring repairs around fastener holes were made by machining blend‐outs ranging from 1/8 to 1/2 the thickness of the plate, then refilling the section of removed material with CS deposition. The repairs were then tested in a lap shear geometry with the repair on both the free (outside) and the mating (inside) surfaces, as well as in remote uniaxial tension. CS repairs for the inside lap shear AA7075 repair configuration and the outside lap shear AA2024 repair configuration were found to have significantly increased fatigue lives even exceeding the number of cycles to failure of the undamaged, unrepaired control plates. Further, none of the CS repairs caused any detrimental impact on fatigue life, and microhardness results indicate that no thermal damage to the substrate occurred. Parallel strand bamboo (PSB) is a latest construction material; to know more about mechanical properties of PSB, 5 groups of specimens with difference only in bolt diameter were designed to study the impact of the fastener diameter on embedding strength perpendicular to grain of PSB. Based on the tested result, the feasibility for PSB of the theoretical equation in the American code and European code on embedding strength predication was assessed. A controlled displacement was used to load till specimen failure, the stress-displacement curve of all specimens was obtained in terms of the tested results, and the yielding tested strength based on 5% bolt diameter offset proposed by the American code was found. The tested results showed that the yielding strength perpendicular to grain of PSB was stable, the variable coefficient was between 5.88% and 13.34%, and the average yielding strength values were 80.84 MPa, 77.40 MPa, 76.52 MPa, 74.20 MPa, and 67.01 MPa, respectively, which decreased with the increase of bolt diameter, and the average yielding strength values are larger than the calculated results using theoretical formula. Detailed investigation of the effects of ferroresonance on power transformers requires a method that is able to quantitatively and topologically assess the core saturation and the stray fields attributed to flux redistribution. This study describes a time‐domain finite‐element approach to model a ferroresonance condition and quantify its effect. More specifically the model generates sustained ferroresonance waveforms and, crucially, also allows examination of the effect of the resulting high core fluxes on the transformer core clamping bolts. The authors present a design of a waveguide rotary joint operating in Ka-band with central frequency of 33 GHz, which also acts as an antenna mount. The main unit consists of two flanges with a clearance between them; one of the flanges has three circular choke grooves. Utilisation of three choke grooves allows larger operating clearance. ABSTRACT Cold expansion and local torsion processes provide controllable strengthening mechanisms for a fastener hole and therefore have engineering significance. They rely on the residual stress and the accumulated shearing strain, respectively, which are difficult to measure. Due to the complex closed form solutions for these mechanisms, their numerical study is of great importance. In this work, a combination of the cold expansion and the local torsion on a fastener hole has been investigated numerically to evaluate the amount and nature of the total accumulated residual stresses around a fastener hole. Different cases of the cold expansion and the local torsion processes were modelled and studied by finite element simulation to investigate the existence of a loading case which produces a beneficial compressive residual stress field in the vicinity of a hole. Cold expansion of fastener holes creates compressive residual stresses around the hole. This well-known technique improves fatigue life by reducing tensile stress around the holes. However, cyclic loading causes these compressive residual stresses to relax, thus reducing their beneficial effect. Estimation of the fatigue life without considering the residual stress relaxation might lead to inaccurate results. In this research, numerical studies were carried out using 2D finite element (FE) models to determine the initial tangential and radial residual stress distributions generated by cold expansion and their relaxation under cyclic loading. To predict the stress relaxation, four nonlinear kinematic hardening models were applied in simulation of stress/strain path. Static and fatigue tests have been carried out on 190-mm-wide fibre metal laminate (FML) riveted lap joints. The specimens were made with a Glare 3-3/2-0.3 material, i.e. a laminate composed of three layers of 2024-T3 aluminium alloy, thickness 0.3 mm and two double layers (0/90) of pre-preg FM-94-27%-S2 glass fibre. Seven configurations were tested which differed in the number of rivet rows (two or three), in the rolling direction of metal layers (perpendicular or parallel to the load direction), in the rivet type (solid or special, such as Hi-Lok or Lock-Bolt), in the rivet material for solid rivets (7050-T73 or 2017-T3), in the rivet diameter (4.8 or 5.5 mm) and in the presence of interlaminar doublers in the overlap area (titanium, aluminium, glass fibre). An additional difference was in the pre-formed rivet head: solid rivets had countersunk head, while Hi-Loks and Lock-Bolts had protruding head. The fatigue tests demonstrated the efficiency of a selective local reinforcement in the overlap area; in some cases, the fatigue resistance was so high that fatigue cracks nucleated in the laminates, rather than in the overlap area, as commonly expected. Fatigue tests were carried out on 2024-T351, thickness 1.6 mm, central hole specimens containing pins installed with five different interference-fit levels. Tests clearly demonstrated the beneficial effect of interference fit on fatigue resistance, up to the maximum value examined, 2.5%. A three-dimensional (3D) finite-element model was used in order to characterize the stress field around the hole. A large specimen, with a 40-mm-diameter hole filled with interference-fit pin, was instrumented by strain gauges and statically tested in order to check FEM results. A very good correlation existed between measured and numerically evaluated strains. FEM results demonstrated the well-known effect of interference-fit fasteners on reducing stress ranges. By increasing the interference level, the stress range was practically unchanged, while the mean stress decreased. Interference-fit produces a biaxial stress state, which must be taken into account for fatigue evaluation. In the present case, a simple criterion, based on hoop strain, predicted the fatigue results quite well with the exception of open hole fatigue test results, which were overestimated. Bonded repairs can replace mechanically fastened repairs for aircraft structures. Compared to mechanical fastening, adhesive bonding provides a more uniform and efficient load transfer into the patch, and can reduce the risk of high stress concentrations caused by additional fastener holes necessary for riveted repairs. Previous fatigue tests on bonded Glare (glass-reinforced aluminium laminate) repairs were performed at room temperature and under constant amplitude fatigue loading. However, the realistic operating temperature of -40 °C may degrade the material and will cause unfavourable thermal stresses. Bonded repair specimens were tested at -40 °C and other specimens were tested at room temperature after subjecting them to temperature cycles. Also, tests were performed with a realistic C-5A Galaxy fuselage fatigue spectrum at room temperature. The behaviour of Glare repair patches was compared with boron/epoxy ones with equal extensional stiffness. The thermal cycles before fatigue cycling did not degrade the repair. A constant temperature of -40 °C during the mechanical fatigue load had a favourable effect on the fatigue crack growth rate. Glare repair patches showed lower crack growth rates than boron/epoxy repairs. Finite element analyses revealed that the higher crack growth rates for boron/epoxy repairs are caused by the higher thermal stresses induced by the curing of the adhesive. The fatigue crack growth rate under spectrum loading could be accurately predicted with stress intensity factors calculated by finite element modelling and cycle-by-cycle integration that neglected interaction effects of the different stress amplitudes, which is possible because stress intensities at the crack tip under the repair patch remain small.
