The Tibetan Plateau (TP) is suffering from a substantial decline in terrestrial water storage (TWS) in exorheic basins, threatening water resources that are critical for ∼2 billion people downstream. TWS changes are commonly estimated using gravity satellites through observations of the total terrestrial mass storage (TMS) change, with an implicit assumption of a negligible contribution from sediment transport. Through long‐term (2002–2017) sediment flux observations in seven headwater basins on the TP, we reveal that the gravity satellite‐derived TMS has decreased at a rate of 3.85 ± 0.23 Gt yr−1 in the seven basins, of which 0.35 ± 0.04 Gt yr−1 is contributed by sediment transport. Neglecting this contribution leads to an overestimation of the TWS loss by 10.1 ± 1.3%, equivalent to the annual water demand of an additional 0.62 million people in the surrounding nations. Regionally, the overestimation is surprisingly high in the Indus River and Yarkant River basins, reaching up to 50.8%–77.6%. The battering of bedrock by bedload collisions is the primary mechanism by which bedrock rivers erode and landscapes evolve. The energy imparted via impacts acts to detach bedrock via the growth and intersection of surface fractures. We present impact experiments designed to test the influence of particle impact energy on bedrock erosion rates. We found that erosional efficiency increased with increasing impact energy. Notably, these increases in efficiency are not captured by a widely‐used mechanistic bedrock erosion model. Observed increases in erosional efficiency were linked with enhanced elastic energy dissipation captured by differences in the coefficient of restitution. We suggest that this increase in energy dissipation is indicative of enhanced crack extension for high velocity impacts. Our experiments indicate a clear energy‐dependence for bedrock detachment processes that is not yet captured by bedrock incision models but may be integrated into long‐term erosion rates and landscape evolution. It's perhaps intuitive that a grain with more energy when it collides with the riverbed is able to chip away more bedrock. But, how much more destructive are these high energy impacts? We designed an experiment where we hit a bedrock sample with a steel ball at a range of impact energies, over and over again, up to 30,000 times, and measured how much material was chipped away. High energy impacts eroded more material, but this increased efficiency of erosion is not fully captured by impact‐based erosion models. We hypothesize that for higher energy impacts, a larger fraction of the incoming energy is used to crack the bedrock, more easily eroding material. We liken the relative influence of these high energy impacts to a battering ram, where only a few strikes can easily break down a door, whereas lower energy impacts, similar to a simple knock, are unlikely to achieve the same result. We suggest that this effect may be important in determining the influence of extreme events on bedrock erosion over long timescales. Previous studies have demonstrated that vegetation‐generated turbulence can enhance erosion rate and reduce the velocity threshold for erosion of non‐cohesive sediment. This study considered whether vegetation‐generated turbulence had a similar influence on natural cohesive sediment. Cores were collected from a black mangrove forest with aboveground biomass and exposed to stepwise increases in velocity. Erosion was recorded through suspended sediment concentration. For the same velocity, cores with pneumatophores had elevated turbulent kinetic energy compared to bare cores without pneumatophores. However, the vegetation‐generated turbulence did not increase bed stress or the rate of resuspension, relative to bare cores. It was hypothesized that the short time‐scale fluctuations associated with vegetation‐generated turbulence were not of sufficient duration to break cohesion between grains, explaining why elevated levels of turbulence associated with the pneumatophores had no impact on the erosion threshold or rate. This study used sediment cores collected from the interior of a mangrove forest to study how the aboveground roots, called pneumatophores, influence hydrodynamic conditions and sediment transport, and in particular the onset and rate of sediment erosion. Individual pneumatophores generate eddies that enhance turbulence, compared to conditions without pneumatophores. In sandy soil, vegetation‐generated turbulence can enhance erosion. Developed barrier systems (barrier islands and spits) are lowering and narrowing with sea‐level rise (SLR) such that habitation will eventually become infeasible or prohibitively expensive for most communities in its current form. Before reaching this state, choices will be made to modify the natural and built environment to reduce relatively short‐term risk. These choices will likely vary substantially even along the same developed barrier system as these landscapes are rarely uniformly managed alongshore. Building on the results from a companion paper, here we use a new modeling framework to investigate the complexities in barrier system dynamics that emerge as a function of alongshore variability in management strategies, accelerations in SLR, and changes in storm intensity and frequency. Model results suggest that when connected through alongshore sediment transport, barriers with alongshore variable management strategies—here, the construction of dunes and wide beaches to protect either roadways or communities—evolve differently than they would in the absence of alongshore connections. Shoreline stabilization by communities in one location influences neighboring areas managed solely for roadways, inducing long‐term system‐wide lags in shoreline retreat. Conversely, when barrier segments managed for roadways are allowed to overwash, this induces shoreline curvature system‐wide, thus enhancing erosion on nearby stabilized segments. Feedbacks between dunes, storms, overwash flux, and alongshore sediment transport also affect outcomes of climate adaptation measures. In the case of partial, early abandonment of roadway management, we find that system‐wide transitions to less vulnerable landscape states are possible, even under accelerated SLR and increased storminess. Here, we use a new model to better understand how these interactions influence the habitability of barriers over time. Our simulations show that different management decisions made for adjacent coastal segments affect each other in positive and negative ways. When communities nourish beaches, adjacent to segments managed for roadways, some nourished sand reaches the adjacent segments, reducing shoreline erosion there. Conversely, portions of barriers that are managed only for roadways allow some overwash to reach the barrier interior; this negatively affects neighboring communities by enhancing their shoreline erosion rates. We find that early abandonment of dune management along portions of barriers may prevent highly vulnerable future states, such as barrier drowning. As communities explore choices for climate adaptation, our findings reveal the importance of coordination among decision makers in adjacent communities to avoid undesirable outcomes. As climate warms, hydrology and geomorphology in glacierized catchments are evolving, changing sediment export from these catchments, thus impacting downstream ecosystems and communities. Currently, much uncertainty persists regarding interactions among geomorphic processes that evacuate sediment from glacierized catchments. Here, we present a catchment‐scale numerical model of subglacial and proglacial sediment transport with debris meltout processes. We apply the model in a Monte Carlo framework to suspended sediment data collected over 2014–2020 from the Fieschertal catchment in the Swiss Alps, assessing possible combinations of geomorphic processes responsible for suspended sediment discharge. The ensemble of model outputs quantifies the interaction of different geomorphic processes, including the trade‐off between bedrock erosion and sediment previously stored in the catchment. Model runs suggest that, at some periods, up to 20% of the sediment leaving the glacier is deposited in the proglacial area relative to the catchment's total sediment discharge. This shows that the model captures the proglacial area change from sediment source to sediment sink in different hydrological and glaciological conditions. Furthermore, the findings highlight the impact of glacier retreat on the catchment's sediment dynamics, which both reduces the proglacial area's slope and introduces additional sediment to the proglacial area through debris meltout. The model outputs and the parameters quantify the interaction among geomorphic processes, yielding key insights into the drivers of sediment transport in alpine regions. The implications of these interactions are discussed in the context of interpreting processes responsible for controlling erosion rates from glacierized regions and modeling sediment transport in glacierized catchments. Riparian vegetation plays a fundamental role in alluvial channel evolution by modifying flow and sedimentation dynamics. To elucidate the roles of sediment supply, flow‐dependent transport capacity, and morphodynamic feedbacks on the evolution of emergent vegetation patches over a single hydrograph, we conducted two experiments with different reach‐scale sediment supplies: a high‐supply experiment (HSE) and low‐supply experiment (LSE). We measured flow velocities, bedload transport, and topographic changes around a full‐scale patch of live emergent willows in an outdoor laboratory flume. Erosion occurred in the patch‐adjacent channel areas irrespective of the sediment supply, whereas deposition within the patch interior was suppressed in the LSE and enhanced in the HSE. The magnitude of patch deposition in each experiment was controlled by the local sediment supply to the patch and local sediment mobility during each discharge in the hydrograph. The local sediment supply was affected by bed morphodynamics at the patch head, which modulated the reach‐scale sediment supply by redistributing the bedload in the channel. Sediment mobility within the patch was flow‐dependent and a function of velocity and turbulent kinetic energy. For different discharges, the velocity in the patch changed proportionally with the freestream velocity; however, the turbulent kinetic energy was more sensitive, being elevated compared with the freestream during high flows and inhibited at low flows. Therefore, deposition and erosion within vegetation patches are not simply functions of the reach‐scale sediment supply or patch flow characteristics, as is often assumed, but additionally depend on the local sediment supply to the patch interior. Plain Language Summary: Riparian vegetation in rivers and deltas is considered a primary cause of sediment deposition and channel stabilization. However, in the laboratory, we identified the physical mechanisms influencing sediment deposition and erosion and their change over a natural flow regime to illustrate that the same full‐sized willow patch can either enhance or reduce sediment deposition within the patch interior relative to the same channel without vegetation. The amount of sediment deposited in the vegetation patch depended on the velocity and turbulent kinetic energy of the water, which changed as the flow decreased. Additionally, the presence of a single vegetation patch fundamentally changed the character of the channel from depositional to erosional near the patch, indicating that more erosion occurred in adjacent channels than deposition within the patch. Deposition and erosion of the bed were also influenced by the amount of sediment supplied to the channel from upstream. This reach‐scale sediment supply was modified by a sediment mound that formed at the upstream end of the patch during high sediment supply to the channel. The mound redistributed the sediment transport within the channel and vegetation patch, revealing another physical mechanism influencing the spatial and temporal variability of bedload transport in vegetated channels. Infragravity waves are key components of the hydro‐sedimentary processes in coastal areas, especially during extreme storms. Accurate modeling of coastal erosion and breaching requires consideration of the effects of infragravity waves. Here, we present InWave, a new infragravity wave driver of the Coupled Ocean‐Atmopshere‐Waves‐Sediment Transport (COAWST) modeling system. InWave computes the spatial and temporal variation of wave energy at the wave group scale and the associated incoming bound infragravity wave. Wave group‐varying forces drive free infragravity wave growth and propagation within the hydrodynamic model of the coupled modeling system, which is the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) in this work. Since ROMS is a three‐dimensional model, this coupling allows for the combined formation of undertow currents and infragravity waves. We verified the coupled InWave‐ROMS with one idealized test case, one laboratory experiment, and one field experiment. The coupled modeling system correctly reproduced the propagation of gravity wave energy with acceptable numerical dissipation. It also captured the transfer of energy from the gravity band to the infragravity band, and within the different infragravity bands in the surf zone, the measured three‐dimensional flow structure, and dune morphological evolution satisfactorily. The idealized case demonstrated that the infragravity wave variance depends on the directional resolution and horizontal grid resolution, which are known challenges with the approach taken here. The addition of InWave to COAWST enables novel investigation of nearshore hydro‐sedimentary dynamics driven by infragravity waves using the strengths of the other modeling components, namely the three‐dimensional nature of ROMS and the sediment transport routines. When wind‐waves of similar periods travel together, they group, resulting in varying wave heights within the groups. Therefore, it is important that we are able to model infragravity waves. We present a novel infragravity wave component of the Coupled‐Ocean‐Atmosphere‐Wave‐Sediment Transport (COAWST) modeling system: InWave. By coupling InWave and a circulation model, COAWST is now able to account for the main processes needed to predict coastal hazards due to extreme storms. This new coupled system is verified by reproducing observations from idealized numerical cases, a laboratory experiment on dune erosion, and a field experiment. Results show a good agreement with observations. We describe a framework for the simultaneous estimation of model parameters in a partial differential equation using sparse observations. Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling is used in a Bayesian framework to estimate posterior probability distributions for each parameter. We describe the necessary components of this approach and its broad potential for application in models of unsteady processes. The framework is applied to three case studies, of increasing complexity, from the field of cohesive sediment transport. We demonstrate that the framework can be used to recover posterior distributions for all parameters of interest and the results agree well with independent estimates (where available). We also demonstrate how the framework can be used to compare different model parameterizations and provide information on the covariance between model parameters. The sediment composition of the seabed governs its mobility, hence determining sediment transport and morphological evolution of estuaries and tidal basins. Bed sediments often consist of mixtures of sand and mud, with spatial gradients in the sand/mud content. This study aims at increasing the understanding of processes driving the sediment composition in tidal basins, focusing on depositional processes. We show that bed sediments in the Wadden Sea tend to be either mud‐dominated or sand‐dominated, resulting in a bimodal distribution of the mud content where the two modes represent equilibrium conditions. The equilibria depend primarily on the sediment deposition fluxes, with bimodality originating from the dependence of suspended sand/mud concentrations on the local bed composition. Our analysis shows that bimodality is a phenomenon that is not only specific for the Wadden Sea; it can be expected for a wide range of suspended sediment concentrations and thus also in other systems worldwide. Plain Language Summary: The bottom of coastal seas is often composed of two sediment types, namely sand and mud. The evolution of the seabed, and thus of our coasts, depends on how these sediment types move. A correct representation of the spatial sand‐mud patterns in the bed is therefore essential if we want to understand and predict coastal evolution. Studying a large data set we found that sediment beds tend to be either sandy or muddy, with lower chances of finding something in between (i.e., bimodality). Although segregation of sand and mud has often been attributed to erosion processes, we found that this is mainly the result of depositional processes, and especially of the suspended sediment concentrations. Sand concentrations largely depend on local conditions, while local mud concentrations are much more affected by conditions elsewhere and/or earlier. The difference in the suspended sand and mud concentrations leads to multiple equilibria in the bed composition—resulting in the previously mentioned bimodality—for a very wide range of conditions. Therefore, we also expect bimodality and sharp sand‐mud transitions in other systems worldwide. Glaciers are commonly conceptualized as bodies composed of snow and ice. Yet, many glaciers contain a substantial amount of rock, especially those abutting steep mountains. Mountain slopes erode, depositing rocks on glaciers below. This loose rock (or debris) is buried in glaciers and melts out lower down creating a debris cover. Debris cover reduces ice melt, which changes the shape and movement of glaciers. Glacier movement, specifically basal sliding, efficiently sculpts landscapes. To date, we know little about the impacts of surface debris on conditions below glaciers. To help remedy this, we run numerical model simulations which show that debris‐covered glaciers erode slower than glaciers unaffected by debris. Reduced melt under surface debris lowers sliding speeds and causes sediment to accumulate at the bed, potentially establishing conditions for surging. The influence of surface debris cover on the subglacial environment may hold substantial implications for alpine sediment storage and landscape evolution. Direct measurements of erosional response to past climate change are scarce, but mid‐latitude landscapes can record how shifts between cold and warm periods altered erosion outside glacial margins. To study hillslope responses to periglaciation, we measured bulk geochemistry and cosmogenic 10Be and 26Al concentrations in colluvium and weathered bedrock in an 18 m regolith core from Bear Meadows, Pennsylvania, ∼100 km south of maximum glacial extent. Using core lithology, cosmogenic nuclide concentrations, and regional 10Be‐derived erosion rates, we show the onset of 100‐Kyr glacial cycles at the Mid‐Pleistocene Transition (1.2–0.7 Ma) instigated multiple periglacial episodes in central Appalachia, increasing erosion rates compared to the relatively warmer Neogene. Our results show the higher efficiency of periglacial versus temperate erosion processes and highlight a pervasive Pleistocene periglacial erosion signal preserved in the 10Be inventory of surface sediments in central Appalachia, where erosion rates are slow enough to integrate previous cold‐climate processes. However, the effect of these cold climates and subsequent warming on erosion rates is unclear since we often lack records of hillslope erosion of warm and cold periods. We drilled 18 m through hillslope material emplaced during permafrost thaw and into the underlying weathered bedrock, and measured the concentrations of 10Be and 26Al, two isotopes that serve as tracers of burial timing and erosion rate. The ratio of 26Al/10Be in the oldest permafrost thaw unit indicates the material was deposited about one million years ago, corresponding to a switch to colder glacial periods followed by more abrupt and extreme warming. The concentrations of 10Be in bedrock below the deposits also imply slower erosion rates prior to the onset of glacial‐interglacial cycles. Our results indicate that cold climate processes are more efficient at eroding rock and transporting sediment than temperate processes and help explain patterns in erosion rates across the mid‐Atlantic region measured over different time scales. Sediment management is currently limited by uncertainties in the applicability of existing radionuclide tracers and the effects of urbanization. Here, we use plutonium isotopes (239+240Pu) from weapons‐testing fallout to trace sediment transport across five watersheds in an urbanizing landscape in Kansas, USA. Historic flooding in the region provided an opportunity to assess extreme connectivity of sediment sources. 239+240Pu activity of transported sediment decreased as catchments urbanized, indicating a greater contribution from subsurface bank sediment; Bayesian modeling predicted 50% (8%–80%) bank sourcing in the most rural watershed, which rose to 93% (73%–100%) in the most urban catchment. 239+240Pu activity provides explanatory information on the superposition of sediment sources, which is beyond that given by traditional organic and geochemical tracers that primarily infer vegetative and geologic sourcing, respectively. Our study demonstrates the utility of 239+240Pu as a sediment tracer for managing erosion under anthropogenic change. Radioactive isotopes, generated from nuclear weapons testing in the 1950s, have proven useful in this regard, although the most prominent tracer, for example, cesium, is losing some utility due to a short half‐life and extensive radioactive decay. We suggest that plutonium isotopes, which have longer half‐lives, are a viable option for tracing sediment in modern landscapes. Plutonium results suggest that in rural basins the source of sediment transitions from upland soil during low‐flows to bank material at high‐flows. On the other hand, urban streams always deliver bank sediment, regardless of storm intensity. Our study demonstrates the utility of plutonium as an alternate sediment tracer and highlights how urbanization changes the pathways and mechanisms of fluvial sediment transport. Assessing rivers' and hillslopes' sensitivity to external forcing is paramount to understand landscape evolution, in particular as a response to Quaternary climate changes. River networks are usually considered to be the main conveyors of environmental signals, such as changes in precipitation, temperature, or baselevel. Yet because hillslopes provide the source of sediment for river networks, their response to environmental change also modulates landscape dynamics. In order to characterize such behavior, we analyze the response times of a transport‐limited hillslope. We use simple numerical models of denudation to study hillslope responses to oscillatory forcing and understand their filtering effects on environmental signals. Modifications in the frequency of climate oscillation, such as the change that occurred at the Mid‐Pleistocene Transition, can significantly modulate hillslope sediment‐flux response. We infer a wide range of hillslope responses, ranging from negligible change over the full range of climate‐forcing frequencies, to a significant filtering of long‐period signals. Wildfire risk has increased in recent decades over many regions, due to warming climate and other factors. Increased sediment export from recently burned landscapes can jeopardize downstream infrastructure and water resources, but physical landscape response to fire has not been quantified for some at‐risk areas, including much of northern California, USA. We measured sediment yield from three watersheds (13–29 km2) that drain to Whiskeytown Lake, California, within the area burned by the 2018 Carr Fire. Structure‐from‐Motion photogrammetry on aerial images combined with sonar bathymetric mapping of submerged areas indicated first‐year post‐fire sediment yields of 4,080 ± 598 t/km2 (Brandy Creek), 2,700 ± 527 t/km2 (Boulder Creek), and 305 ± 58.0 t/km2 (Whiskey Creek)—some of the first post‐fire yields measured in northern California and 64, 42, and 4.8 times greater than pre‐fire yields, respectively. These were measured during a wet year and resulted largely from rilling erosion and fluvial sediment transport, without post‐fire debris flows. Rilling preferentially developed in contact with dirt roads, aided by thin soils and exposed bedrock, and on slopes vegetated by chaparral pre‐fire. The second post‐fire year (a dry year) was characterized by fluvial reworking and delta progradation of the first‐year deposits and relatively little new sediment export. First‐year sedimentation of 111,000 m3 represented minor loss of storage capacity in Whiskeytown Lake but would be detrimental to smaller reservoirs; in general, increased sediment yields from western US watersheds as fire and extreme rainfall increase will likely pose risks to water quality and storage. The drastic decline in sediment discharge experienced by large rivers in recent years might trigger erosion thus increasing the vulnerability of their extensive deltas. However, scarce information is available on the erosion patterns in mega‐deltas and associated physical drivers. Here a series of bathymetries in the South Passage, Changjiang Delta, were analyzed to identify morphodynamic variations during high riverine flow and tropical cyclones (TCs). Results indicate that high river flow during flood season triggers large‐scale net erosion along the inner estuary, generating elongated erosion‐deposition patches. Erosion magnitude gradually weakens moving seaward with few localized bottom variations in the offshore area. TCs transport sediment landward and are accompanied by an overall weak erosion, with a less organized spatial pattern of erosion‐deposition. TCs can therefore significantly alleviate erosion, reducing the sediment loss induced by riverine flows by over 50%. These results highlight the role of TCs on the sediment dynamics of mega‐deltas. Overbank deposits of submarine channels are typically thin‐bedded, fine‐grained and predominantly characterized by a series of sedimentary structures interpreted to record a relatively simple history of waning flow. Here, a new type of bedform indicative of Froude‐supercritical flow is reported from successions of thin‐bedded turbidites interpreted as channel overbank deposits in the Upper Cretaceous Rosario Formation, Baja California, Mexico. A link is demonstrated between the development of overbank deposits in the form of depositional terraces or internal levees and contemporaneously active sediment transport, bypass and deposition of coarser‐grained material in a channel. The overbank bedforms overlie an erosion surface and contain a suite of sedimentary structures indicative of initially Froude‐supercritical flow conditions and a progressive waning of flow strength. In some cases, a stacked repetition of facies is interpreted to record a rejuvenation of flow energy. The characteristic sedimentary sequence observed is as follows: (a) long wavelength, low amplitude erosional surface with superimposed scours; (b) antidune backsets; (c) upper stage plane‐parallel lamination; (d) subcritical climbing ripples; (e) supercritical climbing ripples; (f) lower stage planar laminated tops; (g) a sharp upper surface. The exact vertical sequence of sedimentary structures encountered varies depending on the point of observation with respect to the bedform crest and distance from the parent channel. The recognition of these distinctive bedforms allows for interpretation of sediment bypass and proximity to a channel thalweg. These bedforms have not hitherto been described and provide a further example of the range of flow processes operating in submarine channel–levee systems, which aids depositional environment interpretation in both subsurface and outcrop studies. It states that incipient sediment motion, suspension, and deposition can be altered by species that both increase and decrease erosion. It examines the impact of aquatic insects, fish, and crustaceans and recommends future studies examine understudied organisms like biofilms.

Recent developments in complex systems analysis have led to new techniques for detecting causal relationships using relatively short time series, on the order of 30 sequential observations. Although many ecological observation series are even shorter, perhaps fewer than ten sequential observations, these shorter time series are often highly replicated in space (i.e., plot replication). Here, we combine the existing techniques of convergent cross mapping (CCM) and dewdrop regression to build a novel test of causal relations that leverages spatial replication, which we call multispatial CCM. Using examples from simulated and real-world ecological data, we test the ability of multispatial CCM to detect causal relationships between processes. We find that multispatial CCM successfully detects causal relationships with as few as five sequential observations, even in the presence of process noise and observation error. Our results suggest that this technique may constitute a useful test for causality in systems where experiments are difficult to perform and long time series are not available. Analyzing a fluvial channel and related depositional fan at its termination in the Gale crater of Mars, the eroded and the deposited volume determined tobe close to each other around 0.47 and 0.32 km3 respectively. Using the Darcy-Weisbach equation and a sediment transport capacity characteristic for high-speed rivers, the duration to erode the channel and build up the sediment were found between 1.5 hours and 3.3 days. The short period might indicate that this ancient river was ephemeral and does not suggest a long duration of wetter and warmer climate, and also addresses a question regarding the general view of long-period fluvial erosion on Mars. Several decades of research have shown that biodiversity affects ecosystem processes associated with resource capture and the production of biomass within trophic levels. Although there are good reasons to expect that biodiversity influences non-trophic ecosystem processes, such as the physical creation or modification of habitat, studies investigating the role of biodiversity on physical processes are scarce. Here we report the results of a study using artificial streams to test the influence of freshwater mussel biodiversity on gravel erosion during high flows while manipulating mussel abundance. Mussel species vary in traits that should influence their effects on erosion, such as size, shell morphology, and burrowing behavior. We found that mussel species richness was associated with an increase in erosion at both low and high densities. Planned contrasts showed that the erosion observed in species mixtures was purely additive at low density, indicating that erosion in a species polyculture could routinely be predicted by the performance of monocultures. However, at high density certain combinations of species showed nonadditive effects on erosion, suggesting that organism abundance can fundamentally alter biodiversity effects. The construction of Churchill Barrier No. 4 in 1943, a causeway in the Orkney Islands of Scotland, has led to the accretion of a substantial beach-dune system, the so-called 'Ayre of Cara'. As a result of the blocking of tidal flows through Water Sound into Scapa Flow, the deposits have accumulated at an average rate of 7.7 × 10 m a, which is manifest at the land surface as an average lateral advance rate of 1-6 m a. The Ayre of Cara is the only accreting dune system in the Orkney Islands and the rate of lateral growth of the beach is one of the fastest in Britain. Since the causeway, one of four built in World War II to defend the British naval fleet, was not intended to 'claim' land, the fundamental question raised is who owns the sand that has accumulated? This question is especially pertinent given that the materials deposited have, at one part of the site, been extracted for commercial gain under license granted by the local authority. A series of theoretical ownership scenarios, which pertain to British legal systems, demonstrate that the situation is complex and that a definitive answer is not yet possible as there has not been a case from this specific site brought before a court, or even from a similar site. However, were property disputes to arise in comparable situations in the future, this paper details for the first time the potential level of confusion and complexity that is likely to arise. The article presents a study on the effects of the implementation and utilization of various grazing and burning practices on wind- and water-driven sediment fluxes in Arizona. The study tested for significant differences in the mean values of wind- and wind-driven sediment transport in burned, grazed, burned and grazed, and undisturbed plots using a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results showed that grazing increased the wind : water sediment transport ratio but decreased in burning.

The article presents a case study on the eroded soil organic carbon (SOC) in the Mississippi Basin (MS). The soil erosion, translocation, redeposition, oxidation, and carbon dioxide sequestration across the five major river subsystems in the MS was quantitatively analyzed to study the role of soil and soil erosion in the carbon cycle. A significant. portion of eroded SOC is exposed to greater oxidation rates during and after erosion creased oxidation due to the breakdown of aggregates, exposing more SOC to the atmosphere and thus reducing organic carbon of eroded soil. The SOC was analyzed using the State Soil Geographic Database. The major medium for eroded material transport is water, so the river gaging station near the downstream boundary of each subsystem is the monitoring point for transport. The problem in the analysis of MS Basin sediment and organic carbon (OC) budget is that erosion estimates are model-based estimates with inherent biases and do not include erosional processes such as gullying and river-bank erosion. Though the water bodies and alluvial soils are carbon dioxide sources, but they must be compared to the locations from which the decomposing OC came. The soil erosion in the MS Basin results in soil degradation due to the removal of organic matter (OM) from upland soils and relocation to depositional sites rather than by net loss of OM to oxidation.

Submarine flows carve canyons into continental shelves, yet the conditions and events responsible for canyon incision are incompletely understood. Coarse sediment flux has been shown to promote terrestrial bedrock incision via abrasion in rivers, but similar processes in submarine canyons have yet to be systematically documented. We use repeat bathymetry, provenance analysis, wave modeling, and channel network analysis to show that longshore sheltering and wave focusing by the Delgada submarine canyon induce sediment accumulation and elevated wave shear stresses in its headwall region that frequently mobilize coarse bed material. These mobilizations scour bedrock in the headwall and generate abrasive turbidity currents that work to carve the canyon's active channel into bedrock. These findings highlight an important positive feedback between submarine canyons, waves, and sediment supply and suggest that submarine canyons adjacent to wave‐dominated, coarse sediment‐rich coastlines seek the shoreline through headward incision. Previous studies have shown that sediment transport models based on bed shear stress (τ) are not accurate for regions with vegetation. The present study demonstrated that the inaccuracy arises from the influence of vegetation‐generated turbulence. Bed‐load transport rate, Qs, and near‐bed velocity were measured in a sediment‐recirculating flume with model vegetation of different vegetation volume fractions (ϕ) and with bare sand beds. At the same τ, the measured Qs increased with increasing ϕ, suggesting that vegetation‐generated turbulence, which also increased with increasing ϕ, was augmenting the bed‐load transport. At the same near‐bed turbulent kinetic energy, kt, the Qs measured in both bare and vegetated channels agreed within uncertainty, suggesting that kt may be a more universal predictor of bed‐load transport than bed shear stress. A τ‐based bed‐load transport model was reinterpreted as a kt‐based model. The new kt‐based model predicted the Qs measurements for both bare and vegetated channels. The goal of our study was to develop a predictive model for sediment transport in regions with vegetation. Using laboratory experiments with a model vegetation, we first showed that existing sediment transport models, based on studies without vegetation, underestimate by orders of magnitude the sediment transport in vegetated regions. Second, we demonstrated that the enhanced sediment transport was caused by vegetation‐generated turbulence. Finally, we proposed and verified a new model for sediment transport that incorporates the role of vegetation‐generated turbulence, which we believe will be an important guide for future coastal and riverine restoration projects.
