Taking document analysis as its method, this paper examines the Tibetans' response to the Chinese state nationalism. Due to the fear of political secession, the Chinese government has stayed silent about the Tibetans' right to self‐determination and subjected regional ethnic autonomy to the centralised political system. The Chinese authorities continue to dismiss the Tibetans' nationalist struggles as an imported foreign design and warn the international community not to sympathise with the Dalai Lama and his supporters. Amidst an adverse national and international political environment, the Tibetans have managed to sustain their nationalist wishes and obtain substantive international attention. Taking this background into account, this paper explores how the Tibetans have succeeded to resist China's state nationalism and position themselves as a champion of inclusion, justice, and minority rights. It argues that the Tibetans recognise the Chinese government's fear of secession and utilise that fear to forward their nationalist aspirations. The Tibetans shift their demand from independence to autonomy and highlight their own desire for recognition as a distinct community within the Chinese state. Over the past decade, new forms of Tibetan entrepreneurship have emerged and proliferated in China, at the intersection of a national push for entrepreneurship in response to a slowing economy, the closure of non‐governmental organisations in Tibetan areas, declining state‐sector employment, and state concerns about stability. This paper explores the rise of these new Tibetan entrepreneurs in relation to two inter‐related concerns. First, it contributes to geographers' calls for comparative studies of culturally specific meanings of entrepreneurship across the Global South. It explores the cultural politics of Tibetan entrepreneurship – active debates about what it means to be a proper Tibetan, in terms of religious commitments and cultural pride, in relation to money‐making activities. Second, it analyses these in relation to critiques of neoliberal subjectivities associated with entrepreneurship. One of the key themes of Tibetan entrepreneurship is the effort to create economic value in the service of cultural value and a sense of self‐worth for Tibetans living in rural areas. Thus, elements of the neoliberal self are sutured together with a sense of responsibility to Tibetan communities and historically sedimented idioms to form an entrepreneurial subjectivity that is broadly oriented to the project of revalorising Tibetan places and people. This paper explores the cultural politics of new forms of Tibetan entrepreneurship that have proliferated in China over the past decade. This paper describes the construction of a 0.25° × 0.25° daily soil temperature (TS) data set at six soil depths (i.e., 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 40 cm) based on a homogenized TS at more than 2,000 meteorological stations across mainland of China for 1960–2017. First, at each station, the observed TS is split into a daily climatology of 1981–2010 and a daily anomaly for 1960–2017. Then, they are respectively interpolated to 0.25° × 0.25° horizontal resolution by using the thin‐plain spline and the angular distance weight interpolation methods. Finally, a gridded multilayer TS data set is constructed from the sum of the above two gridded products. Latitude, longitude, and high‐resolution digital elevation models are explicitly incorporated into the interpolation processes. Selectivity tests indicate that the optimal interpolation distance for the TS anomaly field is 500 km, where the gridded data set may have maximum coverage of the entire Chinese mainland. The results show that the gridded TS climatology is slightly lower than the station observations. The differences between gridded and the station‐based TS varies ±3°C, with relatively large in SW and TIBET. For the gridded anomaly fields, the cross‐validation shows that the mean absolute errors between gridded and station‐based TS are generally less than 0.6°C in the YZ, SW, and SC, but they are above 1.0°C in the NW and TIBET due to the sparse station distribution and large topographic relief. From 1961 to 2016, the seasonal variability of the gridded TS is generally consistent with that of the surface air temperature. The gridded TS over the majority of land displays significantly positive trends in both summer and winter (p > 95%), indicating an overall warming land surface in China. The long‐term gridded TS data not only preserves the spatial features represented in the station observations, but also provides a spatio‐temporal continuous long‐term product of mainland China. Thus, it may be used in future studies, for example, evaluation of land surface model simulations, validation of satellite retrievals, land‐atmosphere interactions, and climate change. This paper evaluates how Tibetan farming communities choose between two methods of livelihood production: working as labourers on vineyard land they have leased to a French winery or collecting valuable fungi. I argue new transnational land and labour management, as part of institutional rearrangements in land tenure, are leading to significant changes with mixed benefits for rural farming communities. These communities respond by seasonally seeking freedom from capitalist labour and returning to communal forms of income production based around community land tenure and common‐pool resources. Although villagers have become contracted labour, they choose to escape this new agricultural work in the mountains, collecting fungi together as a community. The common‐pool land on which fungi are collected is also managed for access in a specific way by and for the community. Contrary to agricultural labour for the winery, fungi collection creates a chance for people to interact once again more as a cohesive community as they once did in their fields by collecting a commodity from land controlled by the community. The disembedding of one section of the economy has thus in a way reinforced the embeddedness of social relations in another as a coping mechanism for the former. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper examines the contrasting approaches to the study of Buddhism of two great early twentieth-century Buddhologists, Louis de La Vallée Poussin and Theodore Stcherbatsky. La Vallée Poussin understood Buddhism primarily as ‘religion’ and saw philosophic methods as subsumed in the religious experience of salvation; Stcherbatsky, coming from the Russian school, which had direct contact with Tibetan Buddhist scholasticism, saw Buddhism primarily as ‘philosophy’ and emphasised critical enquiry and logical consistency. The paper explores how this influenced their understanding of the place of the absolute in Buddhism generally and in Yogācāra Buddhism in particular. It compares their disagreement to differences at the heart of Tibetan scholasticism evident in the writings of Dolpopa (1292–1361) and Tsongkhapa (1357–1419) over the proper interpretation of Yogācāra. A narrative of extremely pervasive rangeland degradation that underlies ongoing state policy on range management and pastoralism widely circulates in scientific reports, policy statements and news reports in China. Adopting a political ecology approach, this paper critically analyses official reports on rangeland degradation through a case study from the Tibet Autonomous Region. It reveals internally inconsistent or contradictory figures and statements regarding the magnitude and extent of rangeland degradation, and points out political‐economic factors influencing official reports on rangeland degradation. This paper engages in debates about the spatiality of social movements which have argued that examining politics purely through territorial or relational understandings of space does not adequately grasp the ways in which social movements undertake their activities. The paper argues that a possible route through this debate lies in the concept of assemblage, which has recently been deployed in geography in order to understand the emergence and practice of social organisation and activity. The paper develops these ideas through an empirical discussion of the practices that help to maintain a particular social movement organisation - a Tibet Support Group (TSG). Through ethnographic engagement with a particular TSG, the paper argues that through the quotidian activities like delivering the mail we can understand how sociospatial practices within an organisation display both territorial and relational elements at the same time. This develops an account that advances knowledge of the spatiality of political action, and with it the ability of assemblage to understand organisational practices, but also develops theoretical insights into TSGs as a particular type of organisation. A new species of Papaveraceae, Corydalis sunhangii, in the section Trachycarpae, is described and illustrated from Nyingchi City, Xizang, China. The new species has some resemblance to Corydalis kingdonis, but differs by radical leaves prominent, usually several, blade tripinnate (vs. insignificant, few, blade bi‐ to triternate); cauline leaf usually one, much smaller than radical leaves, usually situated in lower half of stem (vs. usually two, larger than radical leaves, concentrated in upper third of stem); racemes densely 13–35‐flowered (vs. rather lax, 4–11‐flowered); claw of lower petal shallowly saccate (vs. very prominently and deeply saccate); capsule oblong, with raised lines of dense papillae (vs. broadly obovoid, smooth). Phylogenetic analysis, based on 68 protein‐coding plastid genes of 49 samples, shows that C. sunhangii is not closely related to any hitherto described species, which is consistent with our morphological analysis. The structural connectivity and kinematic relationship between the Altyn Tagh sinistral strike‐slip fault (ATF) and Qilian Shan fold‐and‐thrust belt along the north Tibetan margin east of 96°E is an important question for tectonicists interested in the evolving active deformation field of Central Asia and associated earthquake hazards of China's Hexi Corridor region. New results from a detailed 130‐km‐long N‐S magnetotelluric (MT) survey from the Qilian Shan to Beishan elucidates the locations and down‐dip orientations of major faults. Importantly, the results indicate that the Heishan‐Jinta'Nanshan fault system roots steeply into the lower crust, is unconnected to the Qilian Shan thrust wedge, and has reactivated the margin of the North China Craton and an older, regional ductile shear belt. The structurally linked ATF‐Heishan‐Jinta'Nanshan system defines a fundamental kinematic boundary in central Asia between the NE directed Qilian Shan thrust belt to the south and the eastwardly extruding Beishan‐Alxa Block to the north. Plain Language Summary: In this study, we present results of a comprehensive electrical resistivity survey conducted in the western Hexi Corridor region of China. The survey reveals significant sub‐surface faults and crustal boundaries, providing insights into the crustal structure between northernmost Tibet (Qilian Shan) and the Beishan. We document how the strike‐slip crustal boundary known as the Altyn Tagh Fault (ATF)‐Heishan‐Jinta'Nanshan system is steep and spatially unconnected to the Qilian Shan east of 98°E. It separates crustal blocks with contrasting motion histories; the southern block experiences compressional deformation, whereas the northern block accommodates extensional and transtensional deformation. Furthermore, the northeast trending ATF bends and converges into the more east‐west‐oriented Heishan‐Jinta'Nanshan system. We propose that this is a result of the Heishan‐Jinta'Nanshan system reactivating an older ductile shear belt and a mechanically weak boundary along the northwestern margin of the Precambrian North China Craton. Our study confirms the significance of inherited crustal structures in localizing continental interior reactivation and associated earthquake hazards. Fostering human–wildlife coexistence necessitates a thorough and nuanced grasp of local attitudes toward wildlife. Attitudes can vary substantially based on the sociodemographic backgrounds of individuals within a society. This study examines Tibetan attitudes toward large carnivores, emphasizing the importance of contextualization in discerning the effects of sociodemographic factors on attitudes. We began by analyzing existing research on Tibetan attitudes toward wildlife in China, identifying previously studied sociodemographic variables. We then executed an online survey to evaluate the affective, behavioral, cognitive, and overall attitudes of ethnic Tibetans in China toward snow leopards (Panthera uncia), gray wolves (Canis lupus), and brown bears (Ursus arctos). Our findings show that while factors such as gender, age, religious identity, and level of education shape these attitudes, their influence differs depending on the specific attitude component and the target animal under examination. Therefore, making broad generalizations about sociodemographic differences in attitudes can be misleading. It is imperative for attitude research to clearly define the attitude component (what type of attitude), object (attitude toward what), and circumstance (attitude in which situation) being studied. Conducting ethnographic fieldwork in collaboration with local cultural experts can deepen our understanding of local perspectives and the ways sociodemographic factors influence attitudes. Aim: Research on population genetic patterns and potential distribution dynamics can provide insights into the development of pest management strategies. Herein, we integrated population genetic analyses with the climatic niche approach to investigate spatial population genetic variations and potential geographical distribution (PGD) of the herbivorous pest Phytomyza horticola. We also analysed its population response patterns to both late Pleistocene climatic events and future climate change. Location: China. Methods: We analysed the patterns of genetic diversity distribution in 29 populations from 19 regions across China using three mitochondrial (COI, COII and Cytb) genes as markers. We estimated demographic histories using neutrality tests, mismatch distributions and Bayesian skyline plots. Changes in PGD were assessed using an ecological niche model. Results: High genetic diversity was found in most populations, and the northern population exhibited higher haplotype diversity. The population genetic structure included the Tibet lineage and a large lineage comprising the remaining populations. Demographic analyses indicated that rapid population expansion occurred during the cold Last Glacial Maximum. In addition, our projections suggested that P. horticola currently has a vast PGD in China, for which the human influence index was the strongest variable. Large areas of cold northern regions were highly suitable for its survival. Under future global warming, highly suitable habitats will shift towards the higher latitudes. Main conclusions: P. horticola is widely distributed across varied environments, which may be attributed to its high degree of genetic variation. Human activities likely facilitated the current PGD and the frequent gene flow that homogenized differentiation among most populations. In addition, P. horticola exhibits strong adaptability to cold climates and environments from the past to the future. Considering future climatic changes, prevention and control should focus on high‐latitude regions, and vigilance regarding human‐mediated pest dispersals and outbreaks should be maintained. The Tertiary Nima Basin in central Tibet covers an area of some 3000 km and is closely similar to the nearby Lunpola Basin from which commercial volumes of oil have been produced. In this paper, we report on the source rock potential of the Oligocene Dingqinghu Formation from measured outcrop sections on the southern and northern margins of the Nima Basin. In the south of the Nima Basin, potential source rocks in the Dingqinghu Formation comprise dark-coloured marls with total organic carbon (TOC) contents of up to 4.3 wt % and Hydrogen Index values (HI) up to 849 mg HC/g TOC. The organic matter is mainly composed of amorphous sapropelinite corresponding to Type I kerogen. Rock-Eval T (430-451°C) and vitrinite reflectance (R) (average R= 0.50%) show that the organic matter is marginally mature. The potential yield (up to 36.95 mg HC/g rock) and a plot of S2 versus TOC suggest that the marls have moderate to good source rock potential. They are interpreted to have been deposited in a stratified palaeolake with occasionally anoxic and hypersaline conditions, and the source of the organic matter was dominated by algae as indicated by biomarker analyses. Potential source rocks from the north of the basin comprise dark shales and marls with a TOC content averaging 9.7 wt % and HI values up to 389 mg HC/g TOC. Organic matter consists mainly of amorphous sapropelinite and vitrinite with minor sporinite, corresponding to Type II-III kerogen. This is consistent with the kerogen type suggested by cross-plots of HI versus T and H/C versus O/C. The T and R results indicate that the samples are immature to marginally mature. These source rocks, interpreted to have been deposited under oxic conditions with a dominant input of terrigenous organic matter, have moderate petroleum potential. This article concerns itself with the Buddhist doctrine of upāya (“skilful means”). Rather than provide a historical analysis of the concept, this paper first of all outlines some of the presuppositions that affect both its working in a traditional Buddhist context and its interpretation in modern academic enquiry. It is argued that these contexts differ significantly and that they lead to quite different understandings of the role and function of the concept itself. Then, through reference to the Tibetan dGe lugs pa tradition and the background of Tibetan doxography, it is suggested that there are certain dangers in over-emphasizing the concept of upāya in isolation. Most notably, if the doctrine of upāya is simplistically posited as some sort of aphilosophical praxis against rational enquiry, then there is a danger of not taking the tradition's own scholastic endeavours seriously enough and downplaying the status of rational enquiry in the tradition itself. Sensible heat flux greatly influences the Indian monsoon. In this study, we calculated sensible heat flux time-series for 12 sites over the western Tibetan Plateau using Price and Dunne's formula and adjusting the stability function. The time-series were derived from the field observations from the GEWEX Asian Monsoon Experiment (GAME)/Tibet programme under the Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment (GEWEX). This paper demonstrates that monthly sensible heat fluxes show strong correlations with corresponding precipitation, and that the correlation coefficients increase with precipitation amount. The preceding winter and spring solid precipitation (snowfall and resulting snowpack) can also influence sensible heat flux in May, but the situation is complex. The correlations between heat flux and snowfall at Amdo, Naqu, and Lhasa are negative, but they are positive at Gaize (also known as Gerze) and Dingri. There is a significant relationship between how the variations from the mean calculated heat fluxes at Amdo differ from those at Rikaze, or Dingri, Cuona and Longzi, and their respective June-September precipitation amounts. This phenomenon may result from changes in circulation. When the sensible heat fluxes are above average north of the influence of the Indian monsoon and below average to the south, the summer monsoon circulation develops early and with greater intensity and precipitation, and vice versa. Understanding future dry and wet changes under global climate change is of great regional significance in China. Based on six Global Climate Models (GCM) from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 6 (CMIP6), we project the changes of dry‐wet climate regions in China in the 21st century under the three SSP‐RCP (shared socioeconomic pathway‐representative concentration pathway) scenarios (SSP1‐2.6, SSP2‐4.5 and SSP5‐8.5), and further identify the key climatic factors that lead to the transition of dry‐wet climate regions. The results show the area of humid and subhumid regions in China will show an upward trend in the future, while the area of semiarid and arid regions will show a downward trend. Especially under the SSP5‐8.5 scenario, the area of the subhumid region has the largest increase trend (0.042% per year), and the area of the arid region has the largest decline trend (−0.048% per year). The three main transfer directions of dry‐wet climate regions are from arid to semiarid regions, from semiarid to subhumid regions, and from subhumid to humid regions in the future. Due to the future extensive wetting trend in the north, the future dry‐wet climate regions will shift to wetter types in Tibet, North China, the Qinling‐Huaihe regions and the northeast. In addition, the key climatic factors for the transition of dry‐wet climate regions are mainly precipitation, maximum temperature and solar radiation. The increase of precipitation plays a dominant role for areas projected to change to wetter types, and the increase of potential evapotranspiration (PET) plays a dominant role for areas projected to change to drier types. The PET changes in changed areas of dry‐wet climate regions are mainly dominated by maximum temperature and solar radiation. The Qulong deposit in Tibet is one of the largest porphyry copper‐molybdenum deposits in China. We used short‐wave infrared (SWIR) spectroscopy to examine the spectral characteristics of the extensively developed chlorite in this deposit. X‐ray diffraction and electron microprobe analyses were used for phase identification and to obtain the chemical composition, ion substitution relationships, and formation environment of the chlorite. SWIR spectral parameters were applied to detect the hydrothermal centers. The results indicate that the wavelength of the absorption feature for Qulong chlorite Fe‐OH (Pos2250) range from 2240 to 2268.4 nm; the chlorite substitution relationships are dominated by Mg‐Fe substitution at the octahedral sites together with AlIV‐Si substitution at the tetrahedral sites; the chlorite formation temperatures range within the medium‐low temperature hydrothermal alteration range from 164 to 281°C, with an average value of 264°C; the wavelength of the chlorite peak position for Fe‐OH (2250 nm) absorption and its chemical composition are positively correlated with AlVI, Fe + AlVI, Fe/(Fe + Mg), Fe, and Fe + AlIV but negatively correlated with Mg and Mg/(Fe + Mg); and the wavelength associated with the chlorite Fe‐OH (2250 nm) absorption feature is positively correlated with the temperature at which the chlorite formed. These correlations indicate that more Fe and AlVI ions and fewer Mg ions at the octahedral sites of chlorite lead to a longer the wavelength of the chlorite Fe‐OH (2250 nm) absorption feature and a higher chlorite formation temperature. The wavelength of the Qulong chlorite Fe‐OH (2250 nm) absorption feature (>2252 nm) can thus serve as an exploration indicator to guide the detection of hydrothermal centers in porphyry copper deposits. The results of the study indicate that the mineralogical and SWIR spectral characteristics of chlorite are significant indicators for locating hydrothermal centers within porphyry deposits. Grain self‐sufficiency (GSS) is gaining increased attention throughout the world, and this holds particularly true for China. This study, therefore, investigated spatial and temporal patterns of GSS at the county level in China from 1980s to the 2010s; then explored future GSS changes in the 2035s according to China's 2016 dietary nutrition guidelines, under the circumstances of maximum, average and minimum grain yield increase rate; and finally discussed the ability of a county to purchase grain to meet its demands. The results indicate that the number of counties with self‐insufficiency for total grain and ration decreased, and the amount of counties with high‐level self‐sufficiency for total grain and ration increased. However, the change in the number of counties with feed grain self‐insufficiency and high‐level self‐sufficiency is opposite to that of ration and total grain. Eastern China was characterised by high GSS of total grain, ration and feed grain. As for different kinds of grain, high level of GSS distributed in main grain producing areas, such as rice in south China, wheat in western China and Huang Huai Hai Plain, maize in north and northwest China and soybean in northeast China. Qinghai‐Tibet plateau has undergone poor food security in the last 30 years. In the 2035s, China's total GSS level and ration self‐sufficiency level will be improved under the maximum and average grain yield increase rate, whilst for feed grain, the self‐sufficiency level will be improved only under the maximum grain yield increase rate. The Qinghai‐Tibet plateau has always been a fragile area of food security. This study plays the vital function in understanding China's food security and contributes to the optimisation of agricultural production as well as the utilisation of both internal and external markets. The multi-stage intrusions of intermediate-acid magma occur in the Bangpu mining district, the petrogenic ages of which have been identified. The times and sequences of their emplacement have been collated and stipulated in detail in this paper by using the laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) zircon U-Pb dating method. The ages of biotite monzogranite that were formed before mineralization in the southwest of this mining district are 70±1 Ma (mean square of weighted deviates (MSWD) = 9.5, n= 8) and 60.60±0.31 Ma (MSWD=3.8, n= 16), which belong to the late Cretaceous-early Paleocene in age. That means, they are products of an early tectonic-magmatic event of the collision between the Indian and Asian continentals. The ages of ore-bearing monzogranite porphyry and ore-bearing diorite porphyrite are 16.23±0.19 Ma (MSWD= 2.0, n= 26) and 15.16±0.09 Ma (MSWD=3.9, n= 5) separately, which belong to the middle Miocene in age; namely, they are products of the Gangdese post-collision extensional stage when crust-mantle materials melted and mixed as well as magmatic intrusion simultaneously occurred. Some zircons with ages of 203.6±2.2 Ma (MSWD=1.18, n= 7) were captured in the ore-bearing diorite porphyrite, which shows that there had been tectono-magmatic events in the late Triassic-early Jurassic. Molybdenum (copper) ore-bodies produced in the monzogranite porphyry and copper (molybdenum) ore-bodies produced in the diorite porphyrite are the main ore types in this ore deposit. The model ages of Re-Os isotopic dating for the 11 molybdenite are 13.97-15.84 Ma, while isochron ages are 14.09±0.49 Ma (MSWD=26). The isochron ages of seven molybdenite from molybdenum (copper) ore with monzogranite porphyry type are 14.11±0.31 Ma (MSWD=5.2). There is great error in the isochron ages of four molybdenite from copper (molybdenum) ore with diorite porphyrite type, and their weighted average model ages of 14.6±1.2 Ma (MSWD=41), which generally represent the mineralization age. The results about the Re-Os isotopic dating of molybdenite in the ore of different types have limited exactly that, the minerlazation age of this ore deposits is about 14.09 Ma, which belongs to the middle Miocene mineralization. The Bangpu deposit has a uniform metallogenic dynamics background with the porphyry type and skarn-type deposits such as Jiama, Qulong and others. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Ailaoshan-Red River (ASRR) shear zone is one of the major Southeast Asian tectonic discontinuities that have figured the present tectonic framework of the eastern Tibet. Several metamorphic massifs are distributed linearly along the shear zone, e.g. Xuelongshan, Diancangshan, Ailaoshan and Day Nui Con Voi from north to south. They bear a lot of lines of evidence for the tectonic evolution of the eastern Tibetan at different crustal levels in different tectonic stages. Controversy still exists on the deformation structures, microstructures and their relationship with metamorphisms along the ASRR. In this paper detailed microstructural and EBSD (Electron Backscattered Diffraction) fabric analysis of some highly sheared granitic rocks from different massifs along the ASRR are conducted. High temperature structures and microstructures are preserved in unsheared gneisses, in weakly sheared xenoliths or in some parts of the highly sheared rocks (mylonites). Several types of high temperature quartz c-axis fabrics show symmetrical patterns or transitions from symmetrical to asymmetrical patterns. The former are attributed to coaxial deformation during regional shortening in an early stage of the Indian-Eurasian tectonic interaction and the latter are related to the transitions from coaxial compression to noncoaxial shearing during the post-collisional ASRR left lateral shearing. The article examines the effect of climate change on runoff from a cold Glacier in Tibet. Runoff from cold glaciers involves no temporal storage in cold glacier ice, but does manifest refreezing of meltwater. The paper applies a numerical mass-balance model to data recorded in the the Tanggula Mountains during the 1990s. Figures show meltwater freezing plays a nontrivial role in glacial runoff, and that studies treating meltwater and runoff water as equivalent err in doing so. Also, decreased precipitation increases glacial runoff.

Naotic dissepiments are special structures of rugose corals, characterized by a column of distally arched plates at peripheral parts of thick septa or within the cystozone. In this study, naotic‐dissepimented colonial rugose corals Gyanyimaphyllum crassiseptatum and Ipciphyllum naoticum and their associated microfacies were documented from the Late Permian Gyanyima section in Tibet, southwestern China. The morphology of the Gyanyima naotic‐dissepimented corals is cerioid massive forms or fasciculate forms with connected individuals, with broken skeletons. Between coral colonies and/or skeletons, the interspaces are occupied by highly fragmented bioclasts and sparry calcite. These biotic and sedimentary characteristics suggest that the Gyanyima naotic‐dissepimented corals could have developed in high water‐energy environments above fair‐weather wave‐base. This implies that the development of naotic dissepiments was probably related to an enhanced hydrodynamic force. According to a review on the Permian naotic‐dissepimented rugose corals in China, they are mainly composed of massive colonial forms with a few fasciculate colonial and solitary forms. Current available data indicate that they could occur in bioclastic grainstones and oncoid limestones with eroded skeletons, which also support a conclusion that naotic dissepiments formed in turbulent environments. Based on the ontogenic studies on naotic‐dissepimented rugose corals, naotic dissepiments occur sporadically in the neanic stage and are well developed but not permanently and uniformly in adult stage. Furthermore, different species in the same genus have different degrees of development of naotic dissepiments, which might imply that naotic dissepiments are not suitable to be an important taxonomic character in higher than species level. Landscape heterogeneity is a comprehensive reflection of spatial patch and gradient, which is an important feature of landscape pattern. The China land use/cover dataset (CLUD) with 1 km spatial resolution was used in this study to investigate the dynamic changes of land use/cover in the Yarlung Tsangpo River basin (YTRB) of China from 1980 to 2015 through the land use transition matrix and dynamic degrees. The semi‐variogram model of the study area was constructed at different scales to determine the landscape characteristic scale of the YTRB. The traditional landscape index method and moving window method were used to investigate the watershed landscape pattern at the class and landscape levels, respectively. The results showed that the overall change in land use over the YTRB was not significant during the period 1980–2015, whereas the relative change in each type of land use was significant. Permanent glacier‐snow significantly degraded by 22.72%, while built‐up areas increased by 106.38%. The degree of the landscape fragmentation and diversity gradually increased from upstream to downstream. The unused land has the highest degree of fragmentation, and the agglomeration degree of urban land patches increased. The result of land use dynamic degree indicated that natural factors were the main causes of changes in land use during the first sub‐period 1980–2000, while human activities were the major drivers of changes in land use during the second sub‐period 2000–2015. The results can provide important information on the impact of regional development and environmental governance policies on the changes in land use/cover and landscape in Tibet. The world‐class Rongna Cu(Au) deposit, located in the Duolong mining district, is the first epithermal‐porphyry deposit along the Bangong–Nujiang metallogenic belt. The acidic spring developed in the centre of the Rongna Deposit and its basin has a high amount of heavy metals. Therefore, metal elements (Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, As, Cr and Hg), pH, SO42− of the Rongna River and the composition of its supergene minerals are studied to discuss the environmental influence and provide a theoretical basis for the comprehensive utilization and environmental management of the Rongna Deposit. The result shows that there are eight kinds of supergene minerals: natrojarosite, hexahydrite, tamarugite, anhydrite, pickeringite, bloedite, gypsum and naujakasite, among which, naujakasite is discovered for the first time in China. The material sources of these sulphate minerals and acidic water are from the sulphate in the ores that experience the leaching process and oxidation. The spring is severely acidified, whose pH values are 2.70–3.08, the single pollution index of Cr, Cd, Pb, Hg and As are less than 1, but the index of Cu and Zn exceed the Class III National Water Standard by about twice, showing a mild pollution, its comprehensive pollution index values 0.8 ~ (<2.5), showing good quality. The pH of Rongna River water values are 7.70–7.92, the single pollution index is less than 1, indicating no pollution, and the comprehensive pollution index is less than 0.8, indicating good quality. However, considering the vulnerable ecological environment in Tibet, the acidic spring still needs manual intervention. We present in‐situ zircon laser ablation‐inductively coupled plasma‐mass spectrometry (LA‐ICP‐MS) U–Pb ages, whole‐rock geochemistry, and Sr–Nd–Pb–Hf isotopes of the Mugagangri monzogranite in the southern margin of the Qiangtang Block, Tibet, western China. The zircons yield a U–Pb age of ca. 123 Ma. The hornblende‐bearing monzogranite shows metaluminous to weak peraluminous and high‐K calc‐alkaline characteristics exemplified by high silica (SiO2 = 67.57–70.57 wt%), high aluminium (Al2O3 = 14.68–15.78 wt%), high potassium (K2O = 4.00–5.14 wt%), high alkali (K2O + Na2O = 7.88–8.62 wt%), and low calcium contents (CaO = 1.72–2.17 wt%), with the aluminium saturation index (A/CNK) ranging from 0.98 to 1.09, suggesting that the Mugagangri monzogranite is a metaluminous to weak peraluminous I‐type high‐K calc‐alkaline granite. Geochemically, similar to the arc magmas, the monzogranite is enriched in large‐ion lithophile elements, and relatively depleted in high‐field‐strength elements. The monzogranite displays relatively high (87Sr/86Sr)i values (0.70972–0.71240), uniform εNd(t) values (−2.24 to −3.40), variable zircon εHf(t) values (−14.1 to +8.0), and high radiogenic Pb isotopic values (206Pb/204Pb = 18.588–18.790, 207Pb/204Pb = 15.616–15.642, and 208Pb/204Pb = 38.838–39.053). These geochemical characteristics indicate that the monzogranite was derived from a mixed source comprising ancient crustal and mantle materials, and experienced fractional crystallization during emplacement. We propose that the parental magma of the Mugagangri monzogranite was most likely generated during northward subduction of the Bangong Co‐Nujiang Meso‐Tethys Ocean. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We model the time‐dependent postseismic displacements following the 2001 Mw7.8 Kokoxili earthquake, including both GPS (2001–2002 for near‐field and 2001–2010 for far‐field) and descending‐track InSAR line‐of‐sight time series (2003–2010) to study three postseismic deformation processes. The predicted deformation patterns and magnitude from poroelastic rebound are inconsistent with the geodetic observations. Far‐field postseismic deformation (>200 km from rupture) is primarily induced by upper mantle viscoelastic relaxation beneath Tibet and the Qaidam Basin and places a lower bound on transient and steady‐state viscosities on the order of 1019–1020 Pas. Shallow stress‐driven afterslip (<20 km) on the Kunlun Pass fault localizes deformation in the near‐fault area and helps explain the GPS‐measured displacement gradient across the fault. Deep stress‐driven afterslip in the downdip region of the coseismic rupture (>20 km) has an amplitude of ∼1 m during the first 3 years. Our results indicate that the consideration of deep afterslip increases our estimates of transient viscosity of the lower crust beneath Tibet and the Qaidam basin for this earthquake by as much as a factor of three. Our combined model incorporating viscoelastic relaxation and afterslip suggests that the effective transient and steady‐state viscosities in the Tibetan lower crust are 5 × 1018 Pas and 4 × 1019 Pas, respectively (transient viscosity = 2 × 1018 Pas without afterslip considered), while the effective transient and steady‐state viscosities below the Qaidam Basin area are 1 × 1019 Pas and 6 × 1019 Pas (transient viscosity = 4 × 1018 Pas without afterslip considered). Reference evapotranspiration (ETo) is one of the most important factors influencing hydrologic and climatic quantities, and increases in ETo are often considered as a primary cause for drying under global warming scenarios. Based on bias‐corrected data from the Half a degree Additional Warming, Prognosis and Projected Impacts (HAPPI) experiment, we investigated changes in ETo and drying across the Yellow River Basin (YRB) for 1.5°C and 2°C stabilized warming, relative to the current decade (2006–2015). We used changes in the climatic water deficit (WD: defined as precipitation (P) minus (ETo) to determine drying and wetting trends. Results projected that mean annual ETo would increase significantly over the whole YRB, under 1.5°C and 2°C warming scenarios, with an increase of 4.54% (1.57–7.59% full uncertainty range) and 7.66% (4.49–10.61%), at 1.5°C and 2°C, respectively, averaged over the YRB for the multi‐model mean. It is unclear whether the YRB source region (the NE region of the Tibet Plateau) would be drier or wetter under 1.5°C and 2°C of warming, although it is likely that the N regions of the YRB, and the whole YRB except for the source region will be drier under 1.5°C and 2°C warming scenarios, respectively. With an additional 0.5°C warming, further intensification of drying is projected in the whole YRB, resulting from a more pronounced increase in ETo, and lesser increase/decrease in P. The increased ETo projected under a 0.5°C additional warming was mainly attributed to rising maximum temperatures (tasmax). These results highlight the importance of ETo, in terms of potential future YRB drying, and our study suggests that limiting future warming to 1.5°C would impact regional drying the least. Adequate characterization of soil organic carbon (SOC) fractions is essential to elucidate carbon dynamics in permafrost‐affected ecosystems. SOC and its fractions were investigated across alpine ecosystems, including alpine swamp meadows (ASM), alpine meadows (AM) and alpine steppes (AS), in permafrost regions on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (QTP), southwest China. The density separation method was used to separate the SOC into light‐ and heavy‐fraction organic carbon (LFOC and HFOC, respectively). Permafrost soils in the ASM had higher SOC, LFOC, and HFOC contents than in the AM. LFOC and HFOC contents were significantly correlated, but both were more closely related to SOC than to each other. On the ecological gradient from ASM to AS, the thickness of surficial organic horizons decreased while the thickness of mineral materials increased. SOC in the organic horizon and permafrost had high mineralization probability. At soil depths of 0–200 cm in ASM, AM, and AS, the SOC stocks were 123, 71, and 25 kg m−2; LFOC stocks were 70, 49, and 12 kg m−2; and HFOC stocks were 58, 37, and 15 kg m−2, respectively. These results show that SOC fractions vary with vegetation type and active layer thickness, thus making SOC sensitive to changes in environmental conditions. Therefore, the decomposition of SOC in permafrost‐affected soils of the QTP could be accelerated over a degrading permafrost and under a warming climate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The selection of general circulation models (GCMs) with high capability to represent the past and likely future climate for a specific geographical location is a crucial step to assess impacts of climate change on different sectors. This study included pool of 105 and 78 GCMs for representative concentration pathways (RCPs) 4.5 and 8.5, respectively, from Coupled Model Intercomparison Project—Phase 5, applied an advanced envelope‐based selection approach to select representative GCMs for the Koshi river basin in China and Nepal at short‐term (2016–2045), mid‐century (2036–2065) and end‐of‐century (2071–2100) periods, and developed range of possible future precipitation and temperature scenarios with high resolution downscaled data (10 × 10 km2), which is the novelty contribution of the study. Considering RCP4.5, average annual precipitation is expected to increase by 0–16%, 4–23% and 4–24% in the short‐term, mid‐century and end‐of‐century periods, respectively. Using RCP8.5, equivalent predictions are 6–20%, 6–36% and 13–49% in the short‐term, mid‐century and end‐of‐century periods, respectively. Average annual temperature is expected to increase, but with higher increases during winter than in the monsoon period. Considering RCP4.5, average annual temperature is expected to increase by 1–1.4°C, 1.3–1.9°C and 1.6–2.8°C in the short‐term, mid‐century and end‐of‐century periods, respectively. Similarly, using RCP8.5, equivalent predictions are 1–1.6°C, 1.8–2.9°C and 3.1–5.6°C in the short‐term, mid‐century and end‐of‐century periods, respectively. The ensemble mean of absolute change in average precipitation and temperature projects that High Himalaya and Tibet regions are more sensitive to climate change considering precipitation and temperature, respectively. Abstract: The Zhaxikang Pb‐Zn‐Ag‐Sb deposit, the largest polymetallic deposit known in the Himalayan Orogen of southern Tibet, is characterized by vein‐type mineralization that hosts multiple mineral assemblages and complicated metal associations. The deposit consists of at least six steeply dipping vein‐type orebodies that are hosted by Early Jurassic black carbonaceous slates and are controlled by a Cenozoic N–S‐striking normal fault system. This deposit records multiple stages of mineralization that include an early period (A) of massive coarse‐grained galena–sphalerite deposition and a later period (B) of Sb‐bearing vein‐type mineralization. Period A is only associated with galena–sphalerite mineralization, whereas period B can be subdivided into ferrous rhodochrosite–sphalerite–pyrite, quartz–sulfosalt–sphalerite, calcite–pyrite, quartz–stibnite, and quartz‐only stages of mineralization. The formation of brecciated galena and sphalerite ores during period A implies reworking of pre‐existing Pb–Zn sulfides by Cenozoic tectonic deformation, whereas period B mineralization records extensive open‐space filling during ore formation. Fluid inclusion microthermometric data indicate that both periods A and B were associated with low–medium temperature (187–267°C) and low salinity (4.00–10.18% wt. NaCl equivalent) ore‐forming fluids, although variations in the physical–chemical nature of the period B fluids suggest that this phase of mineralization was characterized by variable water/rock ratios. Microprobe analyses indicate that Fe concentrations in sphalerite decrease from period A to period B, and can be divided into three groups with FeS concentrations of 8.999–9.577, 7.125–9.109, 5.438–1.460 mol.%. The concentrations of Zn, Sb, Pb, and Ag within orebodies in the study area are normally distributed in both lateral and vertical directions, and Pb, Sb, and/or Ag concentrations are positive correlation within the central part of these orebodies, but negatively correlate in the margins. Sulfide S isotope compositions are highly variable (4‰–13‰), varying from 4‰ to 11‰ in period A and 10‰ to 13‰ in period B. The Pb isotope within these samples is highly radiogenic and defines linear trends in 206Pb/204Pb vs. 207Pb/204Pb and 206Pb/204Pb vs. 208Pb/204Pb diagrams, respectively. The S and Pb isotopic characteristics indicate that the period B orebodies formed by mixing of Pb–Zn sulfides and regional Sb‐bearing fluids. These features are indicative of overprinting and remobilization of pre‐existing Pb–Zn sulfides by Sb‐bearing ore‐forming fluids during a post‐collisional period of the Himalayan Orogeny. The presence of similar ore types in the north Rhenish Massif that formed after the Variscan Orogeny suggests that Zhaxikang‐style mineralization may be present in other orogenic belts, suggesting that this deposit may guide Pb–Zn exploration in these areas. The Tiegelongnan deposit is a newly discovered super-large porphyry-epithermal Cu-(Au) deposit in the western part of the Bangong Co-Nujiang metallogenic belt, Tibet (China). Field geology and geochronology indicate that the porphyry mineralization was closely related to the Early Cretaceous intermediate-felsic intrusions (ca. 123-120 Ma). Various epithermal ore and gangue mineral types were discovered in the middle-shallow part of the orebody, indicating the presence of epithermal mineralization at Tiegelongnan. Potassic, propylitic, phyllic and advanced argillic alteration zones were identified. 40Ar/39Ar dating of hydrothermal biotite (potassic zone), sericite (phyllic zone), and alunite (advanced argillic zone) in/around the ore-bearing granodiorite porphyry yielded 121.1±0.6 Ma (1σ), 120.8±0.7 Ma (1σ) and 117.9±1.6 Ma (1σ), respectively. Five hydrothermal mineralization stages were identified, of which the Stage IV pyrite was Rb-Sr dated to be 117.5±1.8 Ma (2σ), representing the end of epithermal mineralization. Field geology and geochronology suggest that both the epithermal and porphyry mineralization belong to the same magmatic-hydrothermal system. The Tiegelongnan super-large Cu-(Au) deposit may have undergone a prolonged magmatic-hydrothermal evolution, with the major mineralization event occurring at ca.120-117Ma. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Tiegelongnan Cu (Au) deposit is the largest copper deposit newly discovered in the Bangong-Nujiang metallogenic belt. The deposit has a clear alteration zoning consisting of, from core to margin, potassic to propylitic, superimposed by phyllic and advanced argillic alteration. The shallow part of the deposit consists of a high sulphidation-state overprint, mainly comprising disseminated pyrite and Cu-S minerals such as bornite, covellite, digenite, and enargite. At depth porphyry-type mineralization mainly comprises disseminated chalcopyrite, bornite, pyrite, and a minor vein molybdenite. Mineralization is disseminated and associated with veins contained within the porphyry intrusions and their surrounding rocks. The zircon U-Pb ages of the mineralized diorite porphyry and granodiorite porphyry are 123.1 ± 1.7 Ma (2σ) and 121.5 ± 1.5 Ma (2σ), respectively. The molybdenite Re-Os age is 121.2 ± 1.2 Ma, suggesting that mineralization was closely associated with magmatism. Andesite lava (zircon U-Pb age of 111.7 ± 1.6 Ma, 2σ) overlies the ore-bodies and is the product of post-mineralization volcanic activity that played a critical role in preserving the ore-bodies. Values of −4.6 ‰ to + 0.8 ‰ δ34S for the metal sulfides (mean − 1.55 ‰) suggest that S mainly has a deep magmatic source. The H and O isotopic composition is (δD = −87 ‰ to −64 ‰; δ18OH2O = 5.5 ‰ to 9.0 ‰), indicating that the ore-forming fluids are mostly magmatic-hydrothermal, possibly mixed with a small amount of meteoric water. The zircon εHf(t) of the diorite porphyry is 3.7 to 8.3, and the granodiorite porphyry is 1.8 to 7.5. Molybdenite has a high Re from 382.2 × 10−6 to 1600 × 10−6. Re and Hf isotope composition show that Tiegelongnan has some mantle source, maybe the juvenile lower crust from crust-mantle mixed source. Metallogenesis of the Tiegelongnan giant porphyry system was associated with intermediate to acidic magma in the Early Cretaceous (~120 Ma). Background: Human neutrophil antigen-3 (HNA-3) alloantibodies can cause fatal transfusion-related acute lung injury (TRALI). Most frequencies of SLC44A2 alleles encoding the HNA-3a/b antigens have been established in Han individuals by polymerase chain reaction with sequence-specific priming (PCR-SSP). We sequenced SLC44A2 gene fragments and determined allele frequencies in three ethnicities of China.Study Design and Methods: Genomic DNA was extracted from 448 samples of 100 blood donors of Yi ethnicity in Xichang, Liangshan; 248 Han in Nanjing, Jiangsu; and 100 Tibetan in Lhasa, Tibet. A PCR-SSP was applied to determine the phase of two single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs); SLC44A2 haplotypes were constructed.Results: In the 567 nucleotides of the SLC44A2 gene covered by our sequencing approach in Han individuals, we detected the known 331-44G>A (rs12972963) and 461G>A (rs2288904) polymorphisms. In the 243 nucleotides sequenced in Yi and Tibetan populations, we detected the known 461G>A and 503-15T>C (rs1560711) polymorphisms. A PCR-SSP for the common HNA-3a/b SNP was 100% concordant. The frequencies of the HNA-3a allele were 0.58, 0.66, and 0.69 in Yi, Han (Nanjing), and Tibetan, respectively (0.42, 0.34, and 0.31 for HNA-3b).Conclusions: The Yi population of China had the highest frequency of blood donors at risk of harboring anti-HNA-3a compared to any population studied so far. Tibet consists of several terranes that progressively collided with the southern margin of Asia during the Mesozoic following the closure of intervening ocean basins. This Mesozoic amalgamation history, as well as the extent to which it may have contributed to crustal thickening prior to the Cenozoic Indo-Asia collision, remains poorly constrained and strongly debated. Here, we present a metamorphic petrological and U-Pb zircon geochronological study of the Amdo metamorphic complex, one of the few exposures of high-grade metamorphic rocks in central Tibet, located along the Bangong suture between the Qiangtang terrane to the north and the Lhasa terrane to the south. U-Pb ages of metamorphic zircon in gneiss constrain the timing of peak metamorphism at c. 178 Ma, prior to the Early Cretaceous collision between the two terranes. Peak P-T conditions of gneiss within the metamorphic complex are constrained by conventional as well as multi-equilibrium ( THERMOCALC v.3.21 and v.3.33) geothermobarometry of two samples of garnet-amphibolite. Whereas THERMOCALC v.3.21 yields similar results as conventional geothermobarometry, THERMOCALC v. 3.33 yields dramatically lower pressures, mostly due to the change in the amphibole activity model used. Using THERMOCALC v.3.21, the two garnet-amphibolite samples yield similar P-T conditions of 0.83 ± 0.06 GPa at 646 ± 33 °C and 0.97 ± 0.06 GPa at 704 ± 35 °C. Plagioclase coronas on the garnet-amphibolite sample with lower peak P-T conditions indicate a period of isothermal decompression. Additional geothermometry on two garnet-free amphibolites yielded similar temperatures of 700-750 °C and suggests similar P-T conditions across most of the complex. However, two exposures of garnet-kyanite schist located along the southern edge of the metamorphic complex yielded slightly lower peak conditions of 0.75-0.85 GPa and 550-610 °C. Petrographic and field relations suggest the difference in metamorphic grade between the schist and gneiss is due to an intervening thrust fault. The existence of the thrust fault indicates that at least part of the exhumation of the complex was due to contractional deformation, possibly during the Lhasa-Qiangtang collision. Our P-T-t results indicate the occurrence of a significant Early Jurassic tectonothermal event along the southern, active margin of the Qiangtang terrane that deeply buried the Amdo rocks. We suggest that the metamorphism is a result of arc-related tectonism that may have been regionally extensive along the southern Qiangtang terrane; geological records of this tectonism may be rarely exposed along strike because of a lack of exhumation or subsequent depositional and structural burial. Microbes play key roles in various biogeochemical processes, including carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycling. However, changes of microbial community at the functional gene level by livestock grazing, which is a global land-use activity, remain unclear. Here we use a functional gene array, GeoChip 4.0, to examine the effects of free livestock grazing on the microbial community at an experimental site of Tibet, a region known to be very sensitive to anthropogenic perturbation and global warming. Our results showed that grazing changed microbial community functional structure, in addition to aboveground vegetation and soil geochemical properties. Further statistical tests showed that microbial community functional structures were closely correlated with environmental variables, and variations in microbial community functional structures were mainly controlled by aboveground vegetation, soil C/N ratio, and NH4+-N. In-depth examination of N cycling genes showed that abundances of N mineralization and nitrification genes were increased at grazed sites, but denitrification and N-reduction genes were decreased, suggesting that functional potentials of relevant bioprocesses were changed. Meanwhile, abundances of genes involved in methane cycling, C fixation, and degradation were decreased, which might be caused by vegetation removal and hence decrease in litter accumulation at grazed sites. In contrast, abundances of virulence, stress, and antibiotics resistance genes were increased because of the presence of livestock. In conclusion, these results indicated that soil microbial community functional structure was very sensitive to the impact of livestock grazing and revealed microbial functional potentials in regulating soil N and C cycling, supporting the necessity to include microbial components in evaluating the consequence of land-use and/or climate changes. The contemporary art world is often imagined as a placeless utopia where artists are free to circulate and their nationhood or ethnicity is of little relevance. However, this essay argues that the art world is actually a rather difficult domain to enter and inhabit. For a group of contemporary Tibetan artists, it initially seemed to offer an escape from the strictures of their home locations and an arena in which to unite when geopolitics otherwise divided them. But as their experiences of participating in a number of exhibitions reveals, the art world is a very real place, with its own boundary markers and criteria for inclusion and exclusion. This article presents combined stratigraphic, sedimentological, subsidence and provenance data for the Cretaceous-Palaeogene succession from the Zhepure Mountain of southern Tibet. This region records the northernmost sedimentation of the Tethyan passive margin of India, and this time interval represents the transition into continental collision with Asia. The uppermost Cretaceous Zhepure Shanpo and Jidula formations record the transition from pelagic into upper slope to delta-plain environments. The Palaeocene-lower Eocene Zongpu Formation records a carbonate ramp that is overlain by the deep-water Enba Formation (lower Eocene). The upper part of the Enba Formation records shallowing into a storm-influenced, outer shelf environment. Detrital zircon U-Pb and Hf isotopic data indicate that the terrigenous strata of the Enba Formation were sourced from the Lhasa terrane. Unconformably overlying the Enba Formation is the Zhaguo Formation comprising fluvial deposits with evidence of recycling from the underlying successions. Backstripped subsidence analysis indicates shallowing during latest Cretaceous-earliest Palaeocene time (Zhepure Shanpo and Jidula formations) driven by basement uplift, followed by stability (Zongpu Formation) until early Eocene time (Enba Formation) when accelerated subsidence occurred. The provenance, subsidence and stratigraphy suggest that the Enba and Zhaguo formations record foredeep and wedge-top sedimentation respectively within the early Himalayan foreland basin. The underlying Zongpu Formation is interpreted to record the accumulation of a carbonate ramp at the margin of a submarine forebulge. The precursor tectonic uplift during latest Cretaceous time could either record surface uplift over a mantle plume related to the Réunion hotspot, or an early signal of lithospheric flexure related to oceanic subduction, continental collision or ophiolite obduction. Mid- to long-term runoff forecasting is important to China. Forecasting based on physical causes has become the trend of this field, and recognition of key factors is central to recent development. Here, global sensitivity analysis based on back-propagation arithmetic was used to calculate the sensitivity of up to 24 factors that affect runoff in the Nenjiang River Basin. The following five indices were found to be key factors for mid- to long-term runoff forecasting during flood season: Tibetan Plateau B, index of the strength of the East Asian trough, index of the area of the northern hemisphere polar vortex, zonal circulation index over the Eurasian continent and index of the strength of the subtropical high over the western Pacific. The hydrological climate of the study area and the rainfall-runoff laws were then analysed in conjunction with its geographical position and topographic condition. The rationality of the results can be demonstrated from the positive analysis point of view. . 1. We collected chironomid larvae and measured basic environmental variables in eight high mountain streams with different degrees of glacial influence in southern Tibet. 2. In total, 32 chironomid taxa were collected. The Orthocladiinae subfamily dominated both in taxon number and in abundance. 3. Both average taxon number and abundance were lower in glacier-fed streams compared with those of non-glacial origin. The total taxon number collected (γ diversity) was similar regardless of glacial influence. However, spot diversity (α diversity) was higher in non-glacial streams, while glacier-fed streams supported higher species turnover (β diversity). 4. Detrended correspondence analysis scattered the study sites along the first ordination axis, representing a combination of distance from glacier and channel stability. Two-way indicator analysis distinguished three groups of sites. Group 1 represented the sites closest to the glacier and were characterised by unstable channel conditions and low temperature with characteristic taxa Diamesa sp. 1, Orthocladius ( Eud.) sp. and Rheocricotopus sp. Group 2 was made up of glacier-fed streams situated further from glaciers, with unstable channels and characterised by Orthocladius ( Euo.) sp. Group 3 contained non-glacial streams as well as a glacier-fed stream further from the glacier margin. For these sites, stable channels and high conductivity were characteristic and Cricotopus ( C.) sp., Pseudosmittia sp, Polypedilum sp., Eukiefferiella gracei group and Pagastia sp. 1 were the dominating taxa. 5. New data on the taxonomy and distribution of Platanthera species in China are discussed. Two new species, Platanthera ovatilabris and P. dulongensis, are described and illustrated. Platanthera ophiocephala is recorded for the first time in China (Yunnan). Platanthera dyeriana in the 'Flora of China' was misidentified as P. sikkimensis, although P. dyeriana is easily distinguishable by reduced leaves 1.5-3.0(4.0) cm long, lower bracts not exceeding the flowers, smaller flowers with sepals 4.5-6.5 mm long and lip ca 8 mm long. True P. sikkimensis is reported from China (Tibet) for the first time. All new localities are mapped. The descriptions of all taxa are accompanied by information on the species' affinities, geographical distribution and implications for their conservation. Platanthera ovatilabris, P. dulongensis and P. ophiocephala are known from 1-3 localities and are assessed as 'Critically Endangered', being threatened by depletion of their habitat (primary forests). Many moraines formed between Daduka and Chibai in the Tsangpo River valley since Middle Pleistocene. A prominent set of lacustrine and alluvial terraces on the valley margin along both the Tsangpo and Nyang Rivers formed during Quaternary glacial epoch demonstrate lakes were created by damming of the river. Research was conducted on the geological environment, contained sediments, spatial distribution, timing, and formation and destruction of these paleolakes. The lacustrine sediments 14C (10537±268 aBP at Linzhi Brick and Tile Factory, 22510±580 aBP and 13925±204 aBP at Bengga, 21096±1466 aBP at Yusong) and a series of ESR (electron spin resonance) ages at Linzhi town and previous data by other experts, paleolakes persisted for 691∼505 kaBP middle Pleistocene ice age, 75-40 kaBP the early stage of last glacier, 27-8 kaBP Last Glacier Maximum (LGM), existence time of lakes gradually shorten represents glacial scale and dam moraine supply potential gradually cut down, paleolakes and dam scale also gradually diminished. This article calculated the average lacustrine sedimentary rate of Gega paleolake in LGM was 12.5 mm/a, demonstrates Mount Namjagbarwa uplifted strongly at the same time, the sedimentary rate of Gega paleolake is more larger than that of enclosed lakes of plateau inland shows the climatic variation of Mount Namjagbarwa is more larger and plateau margin uplifted more quicker than plateau inland. This article analyzed formation and decay cause about the Zelunglung glacier on the west flank of Mount Namjagbarwa got into the Tsangpo River valley and blocked it for tectonic and climatic factors. There is a site of blocking the valley from Gega to Chibai. This article according to moraines and lacustrine sediments yielded paleolakes scale: the lowest lake base altitude 2850 m, the highest lake surface altitude 3585 m, 3240 m and 3180 m, area 2885 km2, 820 km2 and 810 km2, lake maximum depth of 735 m, 390 m and 330 m. We disclose the reason that previous experts discovered there were different age moraines dividing line of altitude 3180 m at the entrance of the Tsangpo Grand Canyon is dammed lake erosive decay under altitude 3180 m moraines in the last glacier era covering moraines in the early ice age of late Pleistocene, top 3180 m in the last glacier moraine remained because ancient dammed lakes didn't erode it under 3180 m moraines in the early ice age of late Pleistocene exposed. The reason of the top elevation 3585 m moraines in the middle Pleistocene ice age likes that of altitude 3180 m. There were three times dammed lakes by glacier blocking the Tsangpo River during Quaternary glacial period. During other glacial and interglacial period the Zelunglung glacier often extended the valley but moraine supplemental speed of the dam was smaller than that of fluvial erosion and moraine movement, dam quickly disappeared and didn't form stable lake. Since the late 1950s, governmental rangeland policies have changed the grazing management on the Tibetan Plateau ( TP). Increasing grazing pressure and, since the 1980s, the privatization and fencing of pastures near villages has led to land degradation, whereas remote pastures have recovered from stronger overgrazing. To clarify the effect of moderate grazing on the carbon ( C) cycle of the TP, we investigated differences in below-ground C stocks and C allocation using in situ 13 CO2 pulse labeling of (i) a montane K obresia winter pasture of yaks, with moderate grazing regime and (ii) a 7-year-old grazing exclosure plot, both in 3440 m asl. Twenty-seven days after the labeling, 13 C incorporated into shoots did not differ between the grazed (43% of recovered 13 C) and ungrazed (38%) plots. In the grazed plots, however, less C was lost by shoot respiration (17% vs. 42%), and more was translocated below-ground (40% vs. 20%). Within the below-ground pools, <2% of 13 C was incorporated into living root tissue of both land use types. In the grazed plots about twice the amount of 13 C remained in soil (18%) and was mineralized to CO2 (20%) as compared to the ungrazed plots (soil 10%; CO2 9%). Despite the higher contribution of root-derived C to CO2 efflux, total CO2 efflux did not differ between the two land use types. C stocks in the soil layers 0-5 and 5-15 cm under grazed grassland were significantly larger than in the ungrazed grassland. However, C stocks below 15 cm were not affected after 7 years without grazing. We conclude that the larger below-ground C allocation of plants, the larger amount of recently assimilated C remaining in the soil, and less soil organic matter-derived CO2 efflux create a positive effect of moderate grazing on soil C input and C sequestration. Aim To investigate the population history and demographics of Jerdon's pitviper, Protobothrops jerdonii, and elucidate how the unique physical conditions and heterogeneous mountain environments resulting from the uplift of the Tibetan Plateau shaped the genetic diversity and evolutionary history of the species. Location China and Vietnam. Methods We sequenced and analysed a total of 1752 base pairs from two mitochondrial genes, cytochrome b (cyt b) and NADH dehydrogenase subunit (ND4), for 81 specimens sampled from 27 localities across the species' range, and a total of 464 base pairs from two nuclear genes for 28 representative samples from all mitochondrial DNA lineages. Based on these data, we constructed the genealogical relationships and estimated the divergence times of the mitochondrial DNA clades. Results The mitochondrial DNA results revealed the existence of five distinct, strongly supported and geographically structured DNA lineages within populations of P. jerdonii that are paraphyletic with respect to Protobothrops xiangchengensis. Estimation of divergence dates suggested that P. jerdonii possibly evolved in the western Hengduan Mountains region c. 6.6 Ma in the late Miocene. Nuclear DNA data did not provide sufficient resolution to distinguish the mitochondrial DNA lineages. Main conclusions Based on the present-day distribution and intraspecific genealogy, the evolutionary history of P. jerdonii can be explained by a pattern of dispersal followed by vicariance. All lines of evidence suggest that historical biogeographical factors, particularly the north-south orientation of the higher mountains, as well as low-elevation areas in western China, had the greatest influence on the population structure, lineage formation and species distribution of this snake. However, highly heterogeneous habitats and glacial cycles appear to have affected patterns of intraspecific differentiation. While our mitochondrial data provide evidence for clear phylogeographical structure, our small sampling of nuclear genes does not, suggesting that nuclear markers may not have had sufficient time to coalesce to match patterns observed in the mitochondrial data. Hymenochaete rhododendricola sp. nov. and Hymenochaete quercicola sp. nov. are described from Xizang Autonomous Region (Tibet), southwestern China. Hymenochaete rhododendricola is distinct in the genus by its large and heavily enmeshed setae, and growing on dead branches of Rhododendron. Hymenochaete quercicola differs from other species by its smooth or tuberculate hymenophore, presence of a cortex, relatively large and oblong-ellipsoid basidiospores, and living on dead branches of Quercus. This study combines microstructural observations with Raman spectroscopy on carbonaceous material (RSCM), phase equilibria modelling and U-Pb dating of titanite to delineate the metamorphic history of a well-exposed section through the South Tibetan Detachment System (STDS) in the Dzakaa Chu valley of Southern Tibet. In the hanging wall of the STDS, undeformed Tibetan Sedimentary Series rocks consistently record peak metamorphic temperatures of ∼340 °C. Temperatures increase down-section, reaching ∼650 °C at the base of the shear zone, defining an apparent metamorphic field gradient of ∼310 °C km across the entire structure. U-Th-Pb geochronological data indicate that metamorphism and deformation at high temperatures occurred over a protracted period from at least 20 to 13 Ma. Deformation within this 1-km-thick zone of distributed top-down-to-the-northeast ductile shear included a strong component of vertical shortening and was responsible for significant condensing of palaeo-isotherms along the upper margin of the Greater Himalayan Series (GHS). We interpret the preservation of such a high metamorphic gradient to be the result of a progressive up-section migration in the locus of deformation within the zone. It is well known that climate change alters abiotic factors (temperature and water availability) that directly affect ecosystem properties. However, less is known about the indirect impacts of climate change on ecosystem structure and function. Here, we show that experimental warming may deteriorate ecosystems via trophic interactions. In a Tibetan alpine meadow, plant species composition, size, coverage and above-ground biomass were investigated to reveal the effect of artificial warming ( c. 1 °C mean annual temperature at the soil surface), which was accomplished using warmed and ambient open top chambers. In addition, rodent damage to plants was assessed. The dicot forb silverweed Potentilla anserina increased significantly, while other species groups remained unchanged or decreased in plant community dominance rank after 2 years of artificial warming. The change in community structure was attributed to the difference in biomass allocation and growth form among species. In the third year, plateau zokors Myospalax fontanierii, a widespread rodent herbivore, damaged plants in the warmed chambers, while leaving plants in the ambient chambers mostly undamaged. Above-ground biomass was found to be smaller in the warmed chambers than the controls in the third year, in contrast to the trend of the first 2 years. In addition, zokor burrow density was positively correlated with silverweed biomass and its dominance within communities, which was consistent with findings of independent field investigations that silverweed-dominated plots were more likely to be visited and damaged by the zokors than sites-dominated by grass species. Synthesis and applications. The top-down negative effect of zokor damage on above-ground biomass in the warmed chambers was induced by the bottom-up effect of changes in species composition and community structure on zokor foraging behaviour, which were driven by artificial warming. Such trophic interactions may invalidate some predictions of ecological effects by current species-climate envelope models. Furthermore, because management measures including increasing the water table, planting grass and moderate cattle grazing may prevent silverweed dominance, we suggest that these interventions could be employed to control zokor damage in alpine meadows that are predicted to be drier and warmer in the future. Phenological mismatches due to climate change may have important ecological consequences. In a three-year study, phenological shifts due to experimental warming markedly altered trophic relationships between plants and insect herbivores, causing a dramatic decline of reproductive capacity for one of the plant species. In a Tibetan meadow, the gentian (Gentiana formosa) typically flowers after the peak larva density of a noctuid moth (Melanchra pisi) that primarily feeds on a dominant forb (anemone, Anemone trullifolia var. linearis). However, artificial warming of ~1.5°C advanced gentian flower phenology and anemone vegetative phenology by a week, but delayed moth larvae emergence by two weeks. The warming increased larval density 10-fold, but decreased anemone density by 30%. The phenological and density shifts under warmed conditions resulted in the insect larvae feeding substantially on the gentian flowers and ovules; there was ~100-fold more damage in warmed than in unwarmed chambers. This radically increased trophic connection reduced gentian plant reproduction and likely contributed to its reduced abundance in the warmed chambers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
