The papers in this issue stem from a symposium presented at the 1992 International Primatological Congress in Strasbourg, France. Due to the paucity of information on social organization, reproduction, and the relation of these to ecology in neotropical primates, we organized this symposium, which included researchers conducting comparative studies and those examining aspects of socioecology in single platyrrhine species. The papers in the symposium are organized around three issues: 1) the relation between body size, ecology, and reproduction (papers by Dietz et al., Tardif, and Williams et al.); 2) ranging and dispersal patterns as determinants of social structure (papers by Boinski and Mitchell, Norconk and Kinzey, and Kinzey and Cunningham); 3) phylogenetic and comparative analyses of behavioral and anatomical traits (Ford and Garber). Within these areas, the papers provide new information and new syntheses of existing information on platyrrhine socioecology. In addition, many detail innovative methodological approaches which could fruitfully be applied to other primates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article reports on the Fourth International Colloquium on the ecology and biology of weeds held in the University of Provence in Marseille, France from September 18 to 20, 1973. There were 95 participants, representing 15 different nationalities. The first two days were devoted to the formal presentation of papers and the third to a botanical and ecological excursion to the Camargue. One of these papers is by Becker and Guyot which gave details of a survey of the viable weed seeds occurring in soil under different cropping systems in southern areas of France. There were two papers about tropical weeds, one on the weed flora of coffee and cocoa plantations and the other on the biology and incidence of Eupatorium africanum in West Africa. The papers on individual species included one on Sinapis chieranthus which occurs sporadically as a weed in southern areas of Sologne. The botanical excursion in September 20 was conducted by Professor Deleuil of the Botany Department in the University. Many of the interesting plants to be found in that region were seen and some of man's drastic recent developments too, such as building up of industry and digging of drainage channels, which are beginning to have ecological effects upon the area. The flamingos, the wild white horses and the black cattle used in the bull fights were all seen in the protected natural areas.

This article reports on a Symposium on Herbicides and the Soil. The symposium which was organized by the European Weed Research Council in association with Le Comité Français de Lutte Contre les Mauvaises Herbes was held in Versailles, France from December 10 to 11, 1973. The program comprised the following sessions: Physical properties of the soil. Adsorption and leaching techniques. Herbicides and plant diseases. Biodegradation of herbicides and other factors affecting persistence. Use of simulation models in herbicide research. Group discussions on: herbicides, chemical weed control and soil properties; adsorption and leaching techniques; biodegration of herbicides and plant diseases; use of computation models. The session on physical soil properties comprises of four papers dealing with the relationships between one or more soil properties, the sorption of herbicides and factors affecting adsorptive capacity on soil-colloids. Emphasis is given to interaction between soil components and the way in which aggregated soil-constituents largely determine the accessibility of the herbicide. The papers presented at the symposium provide a considerable body of fundamental knowledge contributing to a better understanding of the complex problem of herbicide-soil behavior.

URBAN policy ,CONFERENCES & conventions ,URBAN planning ,URBAN renewal - Abstract
The traditional industrial cities of Europe face a decline in the industries on which their wealth was built. The conference concerning the issue was held at Lille, France in May 1992. The first conference theme concerned the type of industrial activity likely to promote economic modernization in traditional industrial cities. The traditional industrial regions of Europe remain characterized beyond their differences by disarticulated productive structures. They face two challenges, technological modernization of their productive apparatus and catching up on the technological and scientific gap, their research and development potential remaining high. There should be emphasis on the implementation of policies focusing an integrative approach to the rearticulation of the productive structure. The papers on the second theme, networks and polarization, focused on new forms of spatial economic organization and the emergence of the network paradigm in place of the traditional concept of urban hierarchy. Two spatial trends were referred to, concentration-polarization and specialization of urban space and the emergence of network-like structures between firms and between towns whose effects on the spatial functioning of agglomerations need to be studied. The third conference theme was urban policy and the opposition between competitive urban renewal and global social regulation.

Since 1822, French Protestantism has been engaged in world mission through the Paris Evangelical Missionary Society (SMEP). In 1971, this mission society was succeeded by two organizations – the Community of Churches in Mission (CEVAA) and the French Evangelical Department of Apostolic Action (DEFAP), created by the French Lutheran and Reformed Churches. French delegates of SMEP or DEFAP were present at the six missionary conferences organized by the International Missionary Council (IMC) and the seven held by WCC Commission on World Mission and Evangelism (CWME) since 1910. This article offers a short description of each conference and the French delegation, analyzes the communication around the conferences in the French Protestant press, and reflects on the influence these conferences had on the practice of SMEP and then DEFAP. The authors show that it was during the 1960s, the transition period between SMEP and CEVAA, that the work of IMC/CWME had the biggest impact on the way French churches conceived of and practised mission work. Prominent church leaders played a key role in passing missionary ideas between French Protestantism and the IMC/CWME. But the difficulty of fully integrating world mission issues into the mindset of French churches prevented a deeper reception of the main mission concepts developed by the missionary conferences, especially in the last decades, in which the very significance of the French mission service DEFAP has been questioned. SOCIAL sciences , *TERMS & phrases , *SOCIOLOGY , *CONFERENCES & conventions , *POLITICAL science - Abstract
The article presents information on confusion over various terms in social sciences. Several years ago the author participated in an interdisciplinary panel on "development," at an international sociological congress. Some persuasive and sharply analytic papers were presented, but very little meeting of minds took place simply because the participants had different things in mind when they talked about development. In that context it did little good to explain the fact that development is a polyseme and hence communication between the panelists could be achieved only after people had learned which sense of this word was intended by each scholar using it. Moreover, the effort to prescribe a correct meaning of development led only to contention and disagreement, not cumulation of knowledge or enhanced understanding. The meanings of word "nation" also vary with the disciplines. Political scientists usually have something like the state in mind and they may use the compound, "nation-state," to help remove the ambiguities in both words. By contrast, anthropologists and sociologists are more likely to use "nation" in an ethnic sense, applying it to communities that share a sense of common ancestry and make political claims, typically for control of a single state. In this sense it is not the French "state" that builds the French nation, but rather the French nation that created the state.

The article provides information about the conference on cities in the era of a flexible production held in Lille, France in March 1994. The research agenda of the conference was partly based on the outcomes of important French research programs on territorial and urban aspects of new forms of organization of productive systems. A new articulation between production and reproduction, the transformation of the urban society and the modes of regulation and reproduction of urban social relations is necessary. The scientific agenda of the conference was also inspired by the research themes of at least four European networks. The objective of the conference was to evaluate the state of the art of the analysis of contemporary relationships between urban society and the productive system.

Medical meetings are a time for increasing scientific visibility and leadership. We aimed to examine women's representation in French National Internal Medicine meetings (2013–2018). Women represented 25% of congress presidents, 22% of plenary session speakers, 19% of plenary session moderators and 25% oral session moderators, but 45% of anonymously selected oral communication speakers. Women are under‐represented among invited speakers in French Internal Medicine meetings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
