The article "Global Versus Local: A Socio-Ecological Study of the Westernisation of Maltese Children's Diets," by S. Piscopo, shows that differences are evident between food consumed in public and private, between children attending non-fee paying and fee-paying schools, and between children from rural and urban backgrounds.

The article focuses on the Sixth Urban Change and Conflict Conference which was held at University of Kent in Canterbury, England during September 1987. The author talks about the current course of new urban studies as told in the Canterbury tale of the conference. The author has focused on the role of culture, political power and state policies in the social production of uneven development. When he took time to closely read the entire lot of papers presented at, Canterbury, he found despite the trend toward barefoot empiricism not all of the empirical studies presented at Canterbury represent an endgame in the current quest to link structure, consciousness and social action. Unfortunately, the handful of purely theoretical papers presented at Canterbury avoided this quest altogether by continuing to unfold the arcane "logics" of capital, the market, the state, or the world system without reference to any real people or places in particular. The papers dealing with the relationship between household restructuring and household polarization were among the best at linking theoretical discussion to the empirical specification of local and regional variations in economic and political change.

The article presents information related to the Finance and Market Based Accounting Research Notice of 1991 Conference which will be held at Manchester University in Manchester, England, from July 3-4, 1991. It will be jointly sponsored by the British Accounting Association, the Journal of Business Finance and Accounting and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. The purpose of the conference is to promote European empirical work in the areas of Finance and Market Based Accounting Research. Preference will be given to research based on Great Britain and European data. Theoretical papers of potential significance for empirical work will also be welcomed. The range of topics of potential interest include: market based accounting research, efficient market studies, testing arbitrage and equilibrium asset pricing models, futures and options markets, international asset pricing, foreign exchange, empirical studies on dividend policy and capital structure, mergers and corporate control and management compensation. The sponsors would particularly like to encourage research based on Great Britain financial statement disclosures.

The section introduces a series of articles highlighted at the Challenge of Business Ethics conference in Cambridge, England. The diversity of the papers disguised a unity of contradiction,which linked papers that addressed the same key themes and tensions from opposite perspectives. The corporate social responsibility (CSR) approach faces the problem of converting formal, generalized, intentions into practical and consistent action. The paper by Ioanna Foka in this special edition picks up on this theme and provides a framework for benchmarking organizations' performance on CSR. Other contributors, implicitly or explicitly, consider the sublation of this tension between a focus on the organization and a focus on the individual.

This paper adds to the limited evidence base around documentary representation of the wishes, feelings and views of children and young people involved in the child protection system. It presents the findings of a critical discourse analysis of 114 documents relating to 28 children and young people in the North of England who were the subject of a child protection conference (CPC) due to having experienced significant harm or the high likelihood of significant harm occurring. Three dominant and interlayering discourses were identified: a discourse of childhood, a discourse of participation and a discourse of professional social work practice. While some children and young people came to life in the reports and were afforded a unique identity, others were invisible and their views were marginalized. The findings support a dominant discourse of the unseen and unheard child, with participation normally mediated by power relationships between adults and children, and which marginalizes the experiences of children through a structurally constructed lens of risk and vulnerability. The findings signify the need to establish assessment practices and case reporting systems in which children are heard themselves as well as reported on by others. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The question I contemplate in this paper is: What does systems thinking tell us about how to provide for learning and human development? As a researcher, teacher, and author I have addressed this question throughout my professional life. We discussed this question at the July '97 International Seminar in Systems Thinking in Higher Education at the Open University. This paper is an elaboration of my contribution to the seminar. In Part One, I tell the story of a hypothetical conversation between a subject-matter professor and a systems thinker. It highlights the difference between an instructional-focused and learning-focused approach to education. In Part Two, I elaborate this difference from a systems perspective. In Part Three, I present an epistemology, which brings learning into focus. The article presents information on the jubilee symposium convened to mark the 25th Anniversary of the founding of Unit of Comparative Plant Ecology at Sheffield University in Sheffield, England, which fell on October 1, 1986. Topics discussed were a reflection of the Unit's current interests and included overviews of recent work and predictions for the future, both from past and present members of the Unit and from invited speakers. Seventeen papers presented here were delivered to 160 delegates from 15 countries. The article discusses the highlights of the summer meeting on freshwater ecology at Exeter held by the British Ecological Society on July 3-7, 1964. It was held at the University of Exeter in Devon, England, by invitation of Professor L. A. Harvey and the university authorities. H. Gruffydd's paper entitled "The Population Biology of Chaetogaster limnaei" pointed out there were morphological and behavioral differences between a form of Chaetogaster limnaei living in the kidney of Lymnaea pereger and a form living on the outer surface of this snail.
