Background: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) are a major cause of maternal morbidity and mortality, and their association with increased cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk represents a major public health concern. However, assessing CVD risk in women with a history of these conditions presents unique challenges, especially when studies are carried out using routinely collected data. Objectives: To summarise and describe key challenges related to the design and conduct of administrative studies assessing CVD risk in women with a history of HDP and provide concrete recommendations for addressing them in future research. Methods: This is a methodological guidance paper. Results: Several conceptual and methodological factors related to the data‐generating mechanism and study conceptualisation, design/data management and analysis, as well as the interpretation and reporting of study findings should be considered and addressed when designing and carrying out administrative studies on this topic. Researchers should develop an a priori conceptual framework within which the research question is articulated, important study variables are identified and their interrelationships are carefully considered. Conclusions: To advance our understanding of CVD risk in women with a history of HDP, future studies should carefully consider and address the conceptual and methodological considerations outlined in this guidance paper. Background: Seafarers are at an increased risk of developing cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), potentially due to a stressful working environment and behavioral risk factors. To develop better prevention strategies, it is important to elucidate the extent of this risk. Therefore, we conducted a systematic literature review on CVD in seafarers. Method: We conducted systematic searches in five databases. All studies investigating CVDs among occupational seafarers, published in articles or conference papers, were eligible for inclusion. The identified records were screened and reviewed by two independent researchers, who also evaluated the methodological quality of the included studies. Results: Three thousand nine hundred and seventeen records qualified for screening, and 55 were eligible for inclusion. Most of the studies were observational, including cohort, frequency, incidence or prevalence studies, and review of case records. Around half were assessed at risk of biased findings. Participants in the studies were primarily from North America or the European continent and work onboard transportation vessels. Many studies investigated CVDs as a cause of death, focusing on conditions such as CVD, ischemic heart disease, and myocardial infarction. Frequency of CVD conditions varied but indicate that seafarers face a greater risk compared to the reference populations or control groups. Environmental factors were mainly investigated as risk factors. Conclusion: Our results indicate a higher risk of CVDs among seafarers compared to reference or control groups. However, due to the variable quality of the evidence, well‐designed studies are needed to establish the causes of cardiovascular mortality and morbidity in seafarers and to investigate behavioral aspects of cardiovascular risk. Summary The modern scientific study of physical activity began soon after World War II and focused on the epidemic of cardiovascular disease that was beginning to engulf the Western world. Early ‘exercise prescriptions’ then specified intense bouts of vigorous activity as the most effective way to maintain cardiovascular fitness and ‘heart health’. Doctors and other health professionals then grew concerned that progressively fewer individuals were heeding this advice at a time when physical activity from manual work was becoming less common. Evidence was also emerging in the late 1980s that the value of accumulated, moderately intense activities, now of increasing importance during leisure time, may have been overlooked, or at least underplayed, in the prevention of heart disease, diabetes and some cancers. Perhaps in population terms adherence to moderate ‘lifestyle’ activities would be better than to the earlier vigorous recommendations. Social policy therefore shifted in the United States in 1996; the US Surgeon General's report set out the basic public health message of ‘30 min of moderate activity five, and preferably all, days of the week’. This recommendation was broadly adopted throughout much of the Western world. How this change in health strategy might impact on unhealthy weight gain and the growing obesity epidemic was given little attention. Here we examine how post-war public health policy in physical activity developed in an attempt primarily to prevent cardiovascular disease. In the following article we examine why too little attention may have been given to unhealthy weight gain and investigate how this may have happened. Cardio‐cerebrovascular disease (CCVD) is a serious threat to huma strategy to prevent the occurrence and development of disease by giving electroacupuncture intervention before the disease occurs. EAP has been shown in many preclinical studies to relieve ischemic symptoms and improve damage from ischemia–reperfusion, with no comprehensive review of its mechanisms in cardiovascular disease yet. In this paper, we first systematically discussed the meridian and acupoint selection law of EAP for CCVD and focused on the progress of the mechanism of action of EAP for the prevention and treatment of CCVD. As a result, in preclinical studies, AMI and MCAO models are commonly used to simulate ischemic injury in CCVD, while MIRI and CI/RI models are used to simulate reperfusion injury caused by blood flow recovery after focal tissue ischemia. According to the meridian matching rules of EAP for CCVD, PC6 in the pericardial meridian is the most commonly used acupoint in cardiovascular diseases, while GV20 in the Du meridian is the most commonly used acupoint in cerebrovascular diseases. In terms of intervention parameters, EAP intervention generally lasts for 30 min, with acupuncture depths mostly between 1.5 and 5 mm, stimulation intensities mostly at 1 mA, and commonly used frequencies being low frequencies. In terms of molecular mechanisms, the key pathways of EAP in preventing and treating cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases are partially similar. EAP can play a protective role in cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases by promoting autophagy, regulating Ca2+ overload, and promoting vascular regeneration through anti‐inflammatory reactions, antioxidant stress, and anti‐apoptosis. Of course, both pathways involved have their corresponding specificities. When using EAP to prevent and treat cardiovascular diseases, it involves the metabolic pathway of glutamate, while when using EAP to prevent and treat cerebrovascular diseases, it involves the homeostasis of the blood–brain barrier and the release of neurotransmitters and nutritional factors. This paper updates and builds on a previous White Paper in this journal that some of us contributed to concerning the molecular and cellular basis of cardiac neurobiology of heart disease. Here we focus on recent findings that underpin cardiac autonomic development, novel intracellular pathways and neuroplasticity. Throughout we highlight unanswered questions and areas of controversy. Whilst some neurochemical pathways are already demonstrating prognostic viability in patients with heart failure, we also discuss the opportunity to better understand sympathetic impairment by using patient specific stem cells that provides pathophysiological contextualization to study ‘disease in a dish’. Novel imaging techniques and spatial transcriptomics are also facilitating a road map for target discovery of molecular pathways that may form a therapeutic opportunity to treat cardiac dysautonomia. Medical innovations may lessen the perceived risk of disease which can decrease the take‐up of healthy behaviors, a phenomenon known as risk compensation. In contrast, a diagnosis provides updated information about the state of one's health which may motivate positive behavior change. In this paper, I consider how behavior changes in response to a diagnosis of cardiovascular disease (CVD) before and after the FDA approval of new classes of drugs to treat high blood pressure and high cholesterol in 1973. I find that individuals diagnosed with CVD are more likely to follow a diet and decrease body‐mass index in response to the diagnosis, irrespective of medication approvals. Nonsmoking is a notable exception. Prior to medication availability, there is no change in smoking behavior in response to a CVD diagnosis. Conversely, when medication is available, there is a significant decline in smoking. The empirical complementarity of medication and smoking cessation may be driven by increased exposure to medical professionals (who emphasize the harms of smoking) or because medication decreases the risk of CVD death which heightens the importance of investing in future health. Introduction Methods Results Conclusion In both highly industrialised and developing countries, obesity is reaching epidemic proportions and increasingly becoming a critical indicator of general morbidity, cardiovascular disease (CVD) and renal dysfunction. A promising trend in detection and management of obesity is the measurement of perirenal adipose tissue (PRAT), increasingly recognised as a metabolically active endocrine organ in itself. Its measurement by ultrasound is used increasingly to indicate visceral obesity and its clinical management. This review synthesises current techniques for measuring PRAT and its potential use as an indicator of CVD.We included clinical studies published between 2010 and 2023, investigating the current practice and use of specific ultrasonographic techniques and assessed the reliability and accuracy of included papers. The risk of bias was assessed using the Downs and Black Checklist, and the methodological quality examined using the Grade of Recommendations, Assessments, Development and Evaluation.It found, PRAT measures are predictive of CVD risk factors and the accuracy of ultrasound is comparable to CT and MRI, but there is no consistency in ultrasound technique. The lack of any randomised control trials and the use of 20 different non‐standardised ultrasound techniques across the 21 studies resulted in inconsistent and imprecise clinical observations and interpretations, which decreased the overall quality of the studies.This review found the inclusion of ultrasound measures in routine abdominal imaging potentially invaluable but demonstrates the need for standardisation of the perirenal fat ultrasound measuring technique to improve reproducibility and reliability. Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease contribute significantly to societal and individual impact globally. High‐quality management of these long‐term health conditions is important to prevent deterioration of health, although potentially more complex for patients with intellectual disabilities in residential care. Disease management in this context particularly benefits from complete and accurate recording of disease management. Without complete records, long‐term health conditions are more difficult to track due to the level of uncertainty regarding which clinical examinations have and have not been performed. This study therefore aims to examine the recording routines of quality indicators for disease monitoring for chronically ill patients with intellectual disabilities in Dutch residential care. Methods: This retrospective study utilised medical record data from a large Dutch long‐term care provider. We assessed the occurrence of cardiovascular disease (ICPC‐2 codes K74, K75, K76, K89 and K90), type 2 diabetes mellitus (T90, T90.02) and/or COPD (R91, R95). For adults with intellectual disabilities and long‐term condition, we analysed data entries in an 18‐month period (between July 2020 and December 2021). Observed consultation rates were calculated and presented in median with interquartile range and contrasted against the baseline number of consultations in primary care. Information on recorded quality indicators was presented in frequencies and percentages. Findings: Of the three long‐term conditions investigated, the most common was type 2 diabetes mellitus (8.6%; n = 287), followed by cardiovascular disease (5.8%; n = 195) and COPD (3.0%; n = 101). Of those who received management for their long‐term condition from their contracted GP, patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, or COPD had fewer consultations in 2021 than the Dutch baseline. Discussion of lifestyle was often not recorded. Disease monitoring quality indicators were recorded more often but at a lower frequency than expected. Conclusions: Because of the infrequent recording of quality indicators, recording of management of long‐term conditions for patients with intellectual disabilities in long‐term care appears suboptimal. Although this may not directly harm individual patients, it may jeopardise the quality of management of long‐term conditions, as suboptimal recording limits opportunities for evaluation and improvement. Within a broader trend towards data‐driven work methods in healthcare, recording of quality indicators requires attention from practice, research and policy. We should watch over long‐term diseases to help people stay healthy. We run tests, like checking blood pressure. The results are written in their medical records. These tests are like quality checks.We wanted to see if and how these quality checks were used, mostly for people with a learning disability living in care homes who also have heart disease, diabetes, or lung problems.We looked at their medical papers to see if these checks were there. We also looked at how often they saw the doctor.We found that chronically ill people with a learning disability went to the doctor quite often. But not as often as we expected. Also, the checks were not always written down. The discovery of novel biomarkers is a crucial goal in translational biomedical research. A complete and accurate reporting of biomarker studies, including quantitative prediction models, is fundamental to improve research quality and facilitate their potential incorporation into clinical practice. This paper reviews key problems, guidelines, and challenges in reporting biomarker studies, with an emphasis on diagnostic and prognostic applications in cardiovascular research. Recent advances and recommendations for aiding in peer review, research quality assessment, and the reproducibility of findings, such as diagnostic biosignatures, are discussed. An examination of research recently published in the area of cardiovascular biomarkers was implemented. Such a survey, which was based on a sample of papers deposited in PubMed Central, suggests that there is a need to improve the documentation of biomarker studies in terms of information completeness and clarity, as well as the application of more rigorous quantitative evaluation techniques. There is also room for improving practices in reporting data analysis and research limitations. This survey also suggests that, in comparison with other research areas, the cardiovascular biomarker research domain may not be taking advantage of existing standards for reporting diagnostic accuracy. Aims: To perform a systematic review of studies that sought to identify diagnostic biomarkers for the diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and diabetes mellitus (DM), which could be used in low‐ and middle‐income countries (LMICs) where there is a lack of diagnostic equipment, treatments and training. Materials and Methods: Papers were sourced from six databases: the British Nursing Index, Google Scholar, PubMed, Sage, Science Direct and Scopus. Articles published between January 2002 and January 2023 were systematically reviewed by three reviewers and appropriate search terms and inclusion/exclusion criteria were applied. Results: A total of 18 studies were yielded, as well as 234 diagnostic biomarkers (74 for CVD and 160 for DM). Primary biomarkers for the diagnosis of CVDs included growth differentiation factor 15 and neurogenic locus notch homologue protein 1 (Notch1). For the diagnosis of DM, alpha‐2‐macroglobulin, C‐peptides, isoleucine, glucose, tyrosine, linoleic acid and valine were frequently reported across the included studies. Advanced analytical techniques, such as liquid chromatography mass spectrometry, enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assays and vibrational spectroscopy, were also repeatedly reported in the included studies and were utilized in combination with traditional and alternative matrices such as fingernails, hair and saliva. Conclusions: While advanced analytical techniques are expensive, laboratories in LMICs should carry out a cost–benefit analysis of their use. Alternatively, laboratories may want to explore emerging techniques such as infrared, Fourier transform‐infrared and near‐infrared spectroscopy, which allow sensitive noninvasive analysis. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains to be the leading cause of death globally today and therefore the need for the development of novel therapies has become increasingly important in the cardiovascular field. The mechanism(s) behind the pathophysiology of CVD have been laboriously investigated in both stem cell and bioengineering laboratories. Scientific breakthroughs have paved the way to better mimic cell types of interest in recent years, with the ability to generate any cell type from reprogrammed human pluripotent stem cells. Mimicking the native extracellular matrix using both organic and inorganic biomaterials has allowed full organs to be recapitulated in vitro. In this paper, we will review techniques from both stem cell biology and bioengineering which have been fruitfully combined and have fueled advances in the cardiovascular disease field. We will provide a brief introduction to CVD, reviewing some of the recent studies as related to the role of endothelial cells and endothelial cell dysfunction. Recent advances and the techniques widely used in both bioengineering and stem cell biology will be discussed, providing a broad overview of the collaboration between these two fields and their overall impact on tissue engineering in the cardiovascular devices and implications for treatment of cardiovascular disease. Steatotic liver disease (SLD) is a worldwide public health problem, causing considerable morbidity and mortality. Patients with SLD are at increased risk for major adverse cardiovascular (CV) events, type 2 diabetes mellitus and chronic kidney disease. Conversely, patients with cardiometabolic conditions have a high prevalence of SLD. In addition to epidemiological evidence linking many of these conditions, there is evidence of shared pathophysiological processes. In December 2022, a unique multi‐stakeholder, multi‐specialty meeting, called MOSAIC (Metabolic multi Organ Science Accelerating Innovation in Clinical Trials) was convened to foster collaboration across metabolic, hepatology, nephrology and CV disorders. One of the goals of the meeting was to consider approaches to drug development that would speed regulatory approval of treatments for multiple disorders by combining liver and cardiorenal endpoints within a single study. Non‐invasive tests, including biomarkers and imaging, are needed in hepatic and cardiorenal trials. They can be used as trial endpoints, to enrich trial populations, to diagnose and risk stratify patients and to assess treatment efficacy and safety. Although they are used in proof of concept and phase 2 trials, they are often not acceptable for regulatory approval of therapies. The challenge is defining the optimal combination of biomarkers, imaging and morbidity/mortality outcomes and ensuring that they are included in future trials while minimizing the burden on patients, trialists and trial sponsors. This paper estimates the effect of in utero exposure to adverse events on late life diabetes, cardiovascular disease risks and cognition deficiency. We merge data on the regional violence during the Cultural Revolution and the excessive death rates during the Chinese Great Famine with data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study survey. Results show that female babies who were exposed in utero to the famine have higher diabetes risks, while male babies who were exposed to the Cultural Revolution are shown to have lower cognitive abilities. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) believes to be a major cause of transience and indisposition worldwide. Early diagnosis and timely intervention are critical in preventing the progression of CVD and improving patient outcomes. Machine learning (ML) algorithms have emerged as powerful tools in CVD recognition, with the potential to assist physicians in making accurate and efficient diagnoses. This research paper explores the combination of multiple ML algorithms for CVD recognition, utilizing diverse datasets such as the Cleveland, Hungarian, Switzerland, statlog, and VA Long Beach datasets. Additionally, a CVD dataset comprising 12 attributes and 70,000 records is employed, demonstrating improved results through the proposed and trained model compared to previous prediction techniques for CVD. The performance of various ML techniques, including support vector machines (SVM), naive Bayes (NB), K‐nearest neighbour (KNN), random forest (RF), and logistic regression (LR), is evaluated and compared. The impact of feature selection and feature scaling on the models' performance is also examined. An ensemble bagging technique is applied which is being embedded with other classifiers. LR classifier embedded with bagging techniques proved to be our proposed model. The findings reveal that the proposed Hybrid Linear Regression Bagging Model (HLRBM) outperforms other models. Furthermore, the study highlights the significance of data preprocessing techniques, such as data normalization and class balancing, which significantly enhance the performance of all models. To this end, standard scalar and synthetic minority over‐sampling technique (SMOTE) are employed. The study emphasizes the importance of selecting an appropriate ensemble technique in conjunction with various ML algorithms and preprocessing methods for CVD prediction. Antiphospholipid syndrome is an autoimmune disorder which is characterized by the presence of heterogeneous antiphospholipid antibodies. There is an evidence on antiphospholipid (aPL) antibodies related to thromboembolic events in cancer patients. In fact, the thrombotic complications in patients with malignancy occur at a rather high frequency, compared to other risk factors. In parallel with standard therapies available, there is need of case‐by‐case monitoring of each patient and the introduction of new therapies and need for more clinical trials which will address many questions for the optimal management of patients. This paper presents a basic review of the literature on the aPL antibodies associated with cardiovascular disease and cancer, as well as its complications, which are reported so far in the bibliography. Obesity is a complex and multifactorial condition that poses significant health risks. Recent advancements in our understanding of obesity have highlighted the heterogeneity within this disorder. Identifying distinct subtypes of obesity is crucial for personalised treatment and intervention strategies. This review paper aims to examine studies that have utilised clinical biomarkers and genetic data to identify clusters or subtypes of obesity. The findings of these studies may provide valuable insights into the underlying mechanisms and potential targeted approaches for managing obesity‐related health issues such as type 2 diabetes. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death among American Indians and Alaska Natives (AIANs). Despite copious research on CVD incidence and outcome discrepancies, a social determinants of health (SDOH) focused framework on CVD risk factors and health outcomes in AIAN populations has not been undertaken. This paper presents the following: (1) a review of the literature on SDOH and CVD in AIAN populations, (2) a summary on intersectionality as it relates to SDOH and CVD, (3) a framework for conceptualizing CVD risks, interventions, structural determinants, and health equity, (4) a summary of potential interventions to address CVD in AIANs, and (5) a discussion about future work. Common SDOH themes across the CVD risk factors in AIANs are income‐related obstacles, healthcare access, structural racism, discrimination, and failed colonial policies. Colonization of AIAN populations has resulted in social, political, and economic disadvantages, manifesting as systemic socioeconomic disadvantage and unequal access through elevated poverty rates, lower educational attainment, mental health challenges, and decreased healthcare access. These extensive social factors have a multifactorial effect across several CVD risk factors; all ultimately result in elevated CVD morbidity and mortality. Addressing SDOH and diminishing disparities is essential to facilitating improved CVD outcomes for AIANs. Familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) is a highly penetrant monogenic disorder present from birth that markedly elevates plasma low‐density lipoprotein (LDL)‐cholesterol (LDL‐C) concentration and, if untreated, leads to premature atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease (CAD). At a prevalence of 1:250 individuals, with over 90% undiagnosed, recent estimates suggest that there are approximately 22 000 children and adolescents with FH in Australia and New Zealand. However, the overwhelming majority remain undetected and inadequately treated until adulthood or after their first cardiac event. The guidance in this paper aims to increase awareness about paediatric FH and provide practical advice for the diagnosis and management of FH in children and adolescents. Recommendations are given on the detection, diagnosis, assessment and management of FH in children and adolescents. Recommendations are also made on genetic testing, including counselling and the potential for universal screening programmes. Practical guidance on management includes treatment of non‐cholesterol risk factors, and safe and appropriate use of LDL‐C lowering therapies, including statins, ezetimibe, PCSK9 inhibitors and lipoprotein apheresis. Models of care for FH need to be adapted to local and regional health care needs and available resources. Targeting the detection of FH as a priority in children and young adults has the potential to alter the natural history of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and recognise the promise of early detection for improving long‐term health outcomes. A comprehensive implementation strategy, informed by further research, including assessments of cost–benefit, will be required to ensure that this new guidance benefits all families with or at risk of FH. In this paper we propose a class of multistate models for the analysis of multitype recurrent event and failure time data when there are past event feedbacks in longitudinal biomarkers. It can well incorporate various effects, including time‐dependent and time‐independent effects, of different event paths or the number of occurrences of events of different types. Asymptotic unbiased estimating equations based on polynomial splines approximation are developed. The consistency and asymptotic normality of the proposed estimators are provided. Simulation studies show that the naive estimators which either ignore the past event feedback or the measurement errors are biased. Our method has a better coverage probability of the time‐varying/constant coefficients, compared to the naive methods. Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in recent decades, which are increasing due to changes in people's lifestyles. Their treatment has high costs and a long treatment process. Therefore, predicting such diseases can provide care, and prevention services and treatment programs can be very useful to increase the quality of life and reduce the cost of treatment and the risk of death for patients. Various artificial neural network (ANN) techniques and machine learning (ML) algorithms can be used as efficient and reliable methods to automatically analyze and detect the hidden patterns of patient medical records data collected through medical examinations related to cardiovascular diseases. In this paper, the multilayer perceptron (MLP) neural network is employed as a supervised learning approach to detect cardiovascular diseases. Moreover, we propose a modified version of moth‐flame optimization algorithm named as MMFO which is used to achieve the optimal values of weights and biases in the MLP to speed‐up the training process and provide more accurate predictions. The effectiveness of the proposed method is assessed according to performing extensive experiments on three cardiovascular disease datasets from the UCI repository, and its performance is compared with different state‐of‐the‐art classification approaches. Background/Aim: Non‐alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) affects approximately 25% of the global adult population. The aim of this narrative review is to describe the associations between NAFLD and cardiovascular disease (CVD), arrhythmias, cardiac conduction defects, myocardial remodelling and heart failure. We also discuss the potential mechanisms that mediate or attenuate the strength of these associations, and briefly summarize the effect of treatments that both ameliorate NAFLD and decrease risk of CVD. Methods: Searches of PubMed were performed by the two authors using the terms listed in Appendix. We limited the timeframe to the last decade due to the vast amount of research in the field (up to April 2021) for meta‐analyses, reviews and original papers. Only articles published in English were considered. Results: NAFLD is associated with an increased risk of fatal/non‐fatal CVD events and other cardiac and arrhythmic complications (left ventricular hypertrophy, aortic‐valve sclerosis and certain arrhythmias), independently of common CVD risk factors. There are probably several underlying mechanisms, including hepatic/systemic insulin resistance, atherogenic dyslipidaemia, hypertension and pro‐atherogenic, pro‐coagulant and pro‐inflammatory mediators released from the steatotic/inflamed liver that may be involved. Some genetic polymorphisms, such as PNPLA3 (rs738409 C>G) and TM6SF2 (rs58542926 C>T), may worsen the liver disease, but also attenuate the strength of the association between NAFLD and CVD, possibly via their effects on lipoprotein metabolism. Of the currently tested drugs for treating NAFLD that also benefit the vasculature, pioglitazone and GLP‐1 receptor agonists are the most promising. Conclusions: The complex interplay between the liver and cardiometabolic risk factors contributes to CVD, arrhythmias and cardiac disease in NAFLD. There is an urgent need for a multidisciplinary approach to manage both liver disease and cardiometabolic risk, and to test the cardiovascular and cardiac effects of new drugs for NAFLD. Introduction And Aims There have been no previous quantitative analyses of the possible effects of industry funding on alcohol and health research. This study examines whether findings of alcohol's protective effects on cardiovascular disease may be biased by industry funding. Design and Methods Findings from a recent systematic review of prospective cohort studies were combined with public domain data on alcohol industry funding. The six outcomes evaluated were alcohol's effects on cardiovascular disease mortality, incident coronary heart disease, coronary heart disease mortality, incident stroke, stroke mortality and mortality from all causes. Results We find no evidence of possible funding effects for outcomes other than stroke. Whether studies find alcohol to be a risk factor or protective against incident stroke depends on whether or not there is possible industry funding [risk ratio (RR) 1.07 (0.97-1.17) for those without concern about industry funding compared with RR 0.88 (0.81-0.94)]. For stroke mortality, a similar difference is not statistically significant, most likely because there are too few studies. Discussion and Conclusions Dedicated high-quality studies of possible alcohol industry funding effects should be undertaken, and these should be broad in scope. Abstract: This paper provides a summary of the British Nutrition Foundation Annual Lecture by Professor Susan Jebb held at the Royal College of Physicians, London, on 14 November 2017. Professor Jebb, recipient of the 2016 British Nutrition Foundation Prize for outstanding achievement in the area of nutrition, spoke of her research on diet, obesity and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk and her work to translate science into action to help improve the nation's diet. This paper briefly summarises her research, including analyses of the links between dietary patterns and cardiometabolic risk in prospective cohorts, mechanistic studies such as the effect of portion size on energy intake, a series of randomised controlled trials to test the impact of diet composition on markers of CVD risk, and clinical trials of interventions to treat obesity in primary healthcare settings. Professor Jebb emphasised the need to translate the considerable scientific knowledge about the prevention of CVD through modification of risk factors such as obesity, into systems embedded in routine practice and population‐level interventions, in order to improve public health and tackle health inequalities. Hypertension is an insidious disease which predisposes to cardiovascular complications and if not treated properly can lead to various serious complications. Economic limitations, having additional benefits with few or almost no side effects have made non-pharmacological management of hypertension an attractive approach for dealing with hypertension, in developed and developing countries alike. A MEDLINE search was done for relevant references with emphasis on original studies, randomized controlled trials, and meta-analyses for this review paper. Lifestyle modifications including changes in the dietary pattern, adopting special diets with low sodium, saturated fat and high calcium, magnesium and potassium and trying the new methods like time restricted meal intake which work in tandem with the circadian rhythm are opening new vistas in the field of non-pharmacological management of hypertension. Lifestyle modifications that effectively lower blood pressure are increased physical activity, weight loss, limited alcohol consumption, relaxation techniques of Yoga, Acupuncture, Tai chi, mindfulness-based stress-reduction program, and Transcendental Meditation. Air pollution of the surrounding air is linked with poor health outcomes and is a major contributor to the global burden of disease. Fine particulate matter <2.5 μm in diameter (PM2.5) is strongly associated with cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Short-term PM exposure (hours to weeks) increases the likelihood of adverse cardiovascular events including myocardial infarction, stroke, and heart failure, and longer-term exposure multiplies that risk. Neopterin (NPT) is a Guanosine Tri Phosphate (GTP) metabolite produced by activated macrophages and is considered a pro‐inflammatory and atherosclerotic agent. Beyond this NPT is a multi‐utility biomarker for assessing the status of various diseases including cardiovascular disease, depression, and malignant tumors as well as infections including viral and bacterial origin. Recent clinical investigations suggest the use NPT as a prognostic marker for the early prediction of the severity of Covid‐19, which is the prime concern of global public health. One of the main immunopathological characteristics of Covid‐19 is an excessive inflammatory response, and the severity of the infection is linked with macrophage activation syndrome (MAS). Hence the assessment of neopterin serves as an effective diagnostic tool for the risk prediction of Covid‐19. We present a fluorescence turn‐on sensor for neopterin using ferric ion‐modulated sulfur and nitrogen co‐doped carbon quantum dots. Obesity is a chronic multisystem disease associated with increased morbidity and mortality. The increasing prevalence of obesity makes it a major healthcare challenge across both developed and developing countries. Traditional measures such as body mass index do not always identify individuals at increased risk of comorbidities, yet continue to be used in deciding who qualifies for weight loss treatment. A better understanding of how obesity is associated with comorbidities, in particular non‐metabolic conditions, is needed to identify individuals at risk in order to prioritize treatment. For metabolic disorders such as type 2 diabetes (T2D), weight loss can prevent T2D in individuals with prediabetes. It can improve and reverse T2D if weight loss is achieved early in the course of the disease. However, access to effective weight loss treatments is a significant barrier to improved health for people with obesity. In the present paper, we review the rising prevalence of obesity and why it should be classed as a multisystem disease. We will discuss potential mechanisms underlying its association with various comorbidities and how these respond to treatment, with a particular focus on cardiometabolic disease, malignancy and mental health. The role of saturated fat (SFA) in health is frequently debated. Guidelines from different countries are quite comparable, in that they generally advise people to avoid high intakes of SFA and to replace some saturated fats by cis unsaturated fats. A maximum level of intake of 10% energy of SFA (of total energy) is often advised as a guideline for the general population. This paper discusses issues around SFA and health including the pros and cons of randomised controlled trials with hard endpoints, prospective cohort studies and controlled dietary intervention studies with intermediate endpoints and risk markers, concluding that there is not a single kind of research study that will answer the question on whether intake of saturated fat influences health or not. However, taking all the evidence together suggests that replacing SFA by unsaturated fat, preferably polyunsaturated fat (PUFA), to an intake below 10% energy will favourably affect the risk of cardiovascular disease. It is important to take into account that the proposed changes should be implemented in an otherwise healthy and complete diet. To reach an intake of less than 10% energy from SFA without compromising on the quality of the total diet, the intake of fatty meat and baked goods such as cakes and pastries should be reduced and butter, lard and hard baking fats should be replaced by unsaturated oils and fat spreads made from them. This paper evaluated cross‐sectional relationships between psychological stress and coronary artery disease (CAD) risk among women with suspected ischaemia and no obstructive coronary artery disease (INOCA). Between 1996 and 2000, 551 women with INOCA were enrolled in the Women's Ischemia Syndrome Evaluation (WISE) cohort from four U.S. institutions. Between 2009 and 2012, 376 women with INOCA were recruited from two U.S. institutions for an independent cohort study titled WISE‐Coronary Vascular Dysfunction (WISE‐CVD). Participants underwent coronary angiography and testing for CAD symptoms and risk factors at baseline. Psychological stress was assessed in the form of home/work stress in WISE and home/work stress and financial stress in WISE‐CVD. Results showed that home/work stress predicted greater depression, functional impairment, CAD symptoms, and lower self‐rated health in WISE but was inconsistent as a predictor in WISE‐CVD. In contrast, >60% of WISE‐CVD women reported moderate or severe financial stress. Financial stress levels predicted more CAD risk factors and cardiac symptoms, poorer self‐rated health, and greater depression and functional impairment. Among women with INOCA, psychological stress was associated with CAD symptoms and CAD risk factors. This paper describes conceptual, methodological, and practical insights from a longitudinal social psychological project that aims to build cardiovascular disease (CVD) competence in a poor community in Accra, Ghana's capital. Informed by a social psychology of participation approach, mixed method data included qualitative interviews and household surveys from over 500 community members, including people living with diabetes, hypertension, and stroke, their caregivers, health care providers, and GIS mapping of pluralistic health systems, food vending sites, bars, and physical activity spaces. Data analysis was informed by the diagnosis‐psychosocial intervention‐reflexivity framework proposed by Guareschi and Jovchelovitch. The community had a high prevalence of CVD and risk factors, and CVD knowledge was cognitive polyphasic. The environment was obesogenic, alcohol promoting, and medically pluralistic. These factors shaped CVD experiences and eclectic treatment seeking behaviours. Psychosocial interventions included establishing a self‐help group and community screening and education. Applying the "AIDS‐competent communities" model proposed by Campbell and colleagues, we outline the psychosocial features of CVD competence that are relatively easy to implement, albeit with funds and labour, and those that are difficult. We offer a reflexive analysis of four challenges that future activities will address: social protection, increasing men's participation, connecting national health policy to community needs, and sustaining the project. Hypertension professionals from Asia have been meeting together for the last decade to discuss how to improve the management of hypertension. Based on these education and research activities, the Hypertension, brain, cardiovascular and renal Outcome Prevention and Evidence in Asia (HOPE Asia) Network was officially established in June 2018 and includes experts from 12 countries/regions across Asia. Among the numerous research and review papers published by members of the HOPE Asia Network since 2017, publications in three key areas provide important guidance on the management of hypertension in Asia. This article highlights key consensus documents, which relate to the Asian characteristics of hypertension, home blood pressure monitoring (HBPM), and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM). Hypertension and hypertension-related diseases are common in Asia, and their characteristics differ from those in other populations. It is essential that these are taken into consideration to provide the best opportunity for achieving "perfect 24-hour blood pressure control", guided by out-of-office (home and ambulatory) blood pressure monitoring. These region-specific consensus documents should contribute to optimizing individual and population-based hypertension management strategies in Asian country. In addition, the HOPE Asia Network model provides a good example of the local interpretation, modification, and dissemination of international best practice to benefit specific populations. The impact of hypertension-related cardiovascular disease and target organ damage, and therefore the benefits of blood pressure (BP) control, is greater in Asian than in Western countries. Asia-specific features of hypertension and its effective management are important and active areas of research. The Hypertension Cardiovascular Outcome Prevention and Evidence in Asia (HOPE Asia) Network was formed in 2016 and is now a member of the World Hypertension League. The main goal of the HOPE Asia Network is to improve the management of hypertension and organ protection toward achieving "zero" cardiovascular events in Asia. Considerable work has already been done on the journey to achieving this goal. We have shown that BP control status in Asia differs between countries, and even between regions within the same country. Several expert panel consensus recommendations and clinical guidance papers are available to support the use of home and ambulatory BP monitoring in the region. In addition, the AsiaBP@Home study prospectively investigated home BP control status across 15 specialist centers using the same validated device and measurement schedule. We have also proposed the concept of systemic hemodynamic atherothrombotic syndrome (SHATS), a vicious cycle of BP variability and vascular disease on cardiovascular events and organ damage, and suggested a SHATS score for risk stratification for clinical practice. Psychostimulants are a diverse range of substances that encompass cocaine and the phenylethylamines, the latter including the amphetamines, cathinones and some 'novel psychoactive substances'. This paper examines the range of pathophysiological processes, clinical presentations and treatment options involving the heart and cardiovascular system both in the acute setting and where long‐term effects of psychostimulant use have affected the cardiovascular system. A common feature of these drugs is their effect on the cardiovascular system, where their major action is that of sympathomimetic amines with short‐ and long‐term stimulation of the adrenergic system and consequent effects on blood pressure, cardiac modelling, atherogenesis and cellular calcium signalling. Cocaine additionally exhibits a variety of prothrombotic effects, effects on inflammatory mediators and alterations in myocardial gene expression. Persistent psychostimulant use results in progressive cardiovascular pathology, largely in the form of accelerated atherosclerosis, hypertension and myocardial ischaemia. Abstinence results in at least partial reversal of pathology. To a large extent, an assumption is made that treatment protocols used for cocaine‐associated cardiovascular pathology apply to the amphetamines and other phenylethylamines, but there appears to be little research in this area, despite acknowledgement that cocaine and the better‐known amphetamines have different modes of action. T‐bet is a major transcription factor increasing inflammatory responses in the immune system. Recently, it has been shown that this factor leads to inflammation in cardiovascular disease (CVD). In this study, we examine the dual role of T‐bet in inducing and suppressing inflammatory reactions as well as angiogenesis induction due to inflammatory cytokines in CVD. Relevant literature was identified by a Pubmed search (1992–2018) of English‐language papers using the terms "T‐bet," "Cardiovascular disease," "Immune response," and "Angiogenesis." Although T‐bet causes differentiation of Th1 cells and activation of immune cells such as NK and DC, it suppresses inflammatory responses and replaces damaged vessels with new ones by activating regulatory T‐cells and stimulating angiogenesis. It can be stated that T‐bet acts as double‐edged sword. Therefore, the identification of pathways that can increase the function of T‐bet in activating Tregs and inducing angiogenesis might be used as a new therapeutic option in future investigations. Circular RNA (circRNA) are endogenous transcripts that display differential expression across species, developmental stages, and pathologies. Their lack of free ends confers increased stability when compared with linear transcripts, making them ideal candidates for future diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic interventions. Increasing evidence has implicated circRNA in the pathogenesis of multiple cardiovascular diseases. In this paper, we summarize current understanding of circRNA biogenesis, properties, expression profiles, detection methods, functions, and their implication in cardiac pathologies including/ischemia reperfusion injury, myocardial infarction, cardiac senescence, cardiac fibrosis, cardiomyopathy, cardiac hypertrophy and heart failure, atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease, and aneurysm. Cardiovascular disease ( CVD) prevalence at a global level is predicted to increase substantially over the next decade due to the increasing ageing population and incidence of obesity. Hence, there is an urgent requirement to focus on modifiable contributors to CVD risk, including a high dietary intake of saturated fatty acids ( SFA). As an important source of SFA in the UK diet, milk and dairy products are often targeted for SFA reduction. The current paper acknowledges that milk is a complex food and that simply focusing on the link between SFA and CVD risk overlooks the other beneficial nutrients of dairy foods. The body of existing prospective evidence exploring the impact of milk and dairy consumption on risk factors for CVD is reviewed. The current paper highlights that high milk consumption may be beneficial to cardiovascular health, while illustrating that the evidence is less clear for cheese and butter intake. The option of manipulating the fatty acid profile of ruminant milk is discussed as a potential dietary strategy for lowering SFA intake at a population level. The review highlights that there is a necessity to perform more well-controlled human intervention-based research that provides a more holistic evaluation of fat-reduced and fat-modified dairy consumption on CVD risk factors including vascular function, arterial stiffness, postprandial lipaemia and markers of inflammation. The aim of the present study is to comparatively assess the performance of different machine learning and statistical techniques with regard to their ability to estimate the risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus (Case 1) and cardiovascular disease complications (Case 2). This is the first work investigating the application of ensembles of artificial neural networks (EANN) towards producing the 5-year risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease as a long-term diabetes complication. The performance of the proposed models has been comparatively assessed with the performance obtained by applying logistic regression, Bayesian-based approaches, and decision trees. The models' discrimination and calibration have been evaluated using the classification accuracy (ACC), the area under the curve (AUC) criterion, and the Hosmer-Lemeshow goodness of fit test. The obtained results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed models (EANN) over the other models. In Case 1, EANN with different topologies has achieved high discrimination and good calibration performance (ACC = 80.20%, AUC = 0.849, p value = .886). Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and its complications are a leading cause of death worldwide. Endothelial dysfunction plays a crucial role in the initiation and progression of CVD, serving as a pivotal factor in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular, metabolic, and other related diseases. The regulation of endothelial dysfunction is influenced by various risk factors and intricate signaling pathways, which vary depending on the specific disease context. Despite numerous research efforts aimed at elucidating the mechanisms underlying endothelial dysfunction, the precise molecular pathways involved remain incompletely understood. This review elucidates recent research findings on the pathophysiological mechanisms involved in endothelial dysfunction, including nitric oxide availability, oxidative stress, and inflammation‐mediated pathways. We also discuss the impact of endothelial dysfunction on various pathological conditions, including atherosclerosis, heart failure, diabetes, hypertension, chronic kidney disease, and neurodegenerative diseases. Furthermore, we summarize the traditional and novel potential biomarkers of endothelial dysfunction as well as pharmacological and nonpharmacological therapeutic strategies for endothelial protection and treatment for CVD and related complications. Consequently, this review is to improve understanding of emerging biomarkers and therapeutic approaches aimed at reducing the risk of developing CVD and associated complications, as well as mitigating endothelial dysfunction. Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of non‐cancer death in cancer survivors, but the risk of CVD varies between cancers. Objectives: To synthesise available evidence on patterns and magnitude of CVD mortality risk. Methods: A systematic search of Medline (OVID), CINAHL and Scopus databases from 01‐January‐2000 to 16‐July‐2023 of studies of people with cancer, reporting CVD mortality in cancer population compared with a reference population (e.g. general population) as standardised mortality ratios (SMR). Meta‐analysis of SMRs across cancer and CVD types were pooled using a random‐effects model to allow for heterogeneity of the true effect size across studies. Results: We identified 136 studies from 16 countries. Sample sizes ranged from 157 to 7,529,481. The majority (n = 98; 72%) were conducted in the United States, followed by Europe (n = 22; 16%). The most common cancers studied were gastrointestinal (n = 34 studies), haematological (n = 31) and breast (n = 29). A total of 876 CVD SMRs were extracted across diverse CVD conditions. Of those, the majority (535; 61%) indicated an increased risk of CVD death (SMR >1), 109 (12%) a lower risk of CVD death (SMR <1) and 232 (27%) an equivalent risk (95% CI of SMR included 1) compared to the general population. The meta‐analysis of all reported SMRs showed an increased risk of CVD death (SMR = 1.55, 95% CI = 1.40–1.72) in cancer survivors compared with the general population. The SMR varied between CVD conditions and ranged from 1.36 (95% CI = 1.29–1.44) for heart diseases to 1.56 (95% CI = 1.39–1.76) for cerebrovascular diseases. SMR varied across cancer types, ranging from 1.14 (95% CI = 1.04–1.25) for testicular/germ cell tumours to 2.82 (95% CI = 2.20–3.63) for brain/central nervous system tumours. Conclusions: Cancer survivors are at increased risk of premature CVD mortality compared to the general population, but the risk varies by cancer type and CVD. Many cardiovascular problems stem from blockages that form within the vasculature and often treatment includes fitting a stent through percutaneous coronary intervention. This offers a minimally invasive therapy but re‐occlusion through restenosis or thrombosis formation often occurs post‐deployment. Research is ongoing into the creation of smart stents that can detect the occurrence of further problems. In this study, it is shown that selectively metalizing a non‐conductive stent can create a set of electrodes that are capable of detecting a build‐up of material around the stent. The associated increase in electrical impedance across the electrodes is measured, testing the stent with blood clot to mimic thrombosis. It is shown that the device is capable of sensing different amounts of occlusion. The stent can reproducibly sense the presence of clot showing a 16% +/−3% increase in impedance which is sufficient to reliably detect the clot when surrounded by explanted aorta (one sample t‐test, p = 0.009, n = 9). It is demonstrated that this approach can be extended beyond the 3D printed prototypes by showing that it can be applied to a commercially available stent and it is believed that it can be further utilized by other types of medical implants. Hypertension disproportionately affects African Americans and is a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD). We investigated the relationship of blood pressure (BP) with medial temporal lobe (MTL) dynamic network flexibility (a novel AD biomarker) and cognitive generalization in older African Americans. In a cross‐sectional study, 37 normotensive (systolic BP <130 mmHg, 82.5% F, 64.4 ± 4.9 years; 14.3 ± 2.1 years of education) versus 79 hypertensive (systolic BP ≥130 mmHg, 79.5% F, 66.8 ± 4.1 years; 14.0 ± 0.2 years of education) participants were enrolled. All participants completed a 10‐min resting‐state functional magnetic resonance imaging scan to assess MTL dynamic network flexibility and two generalization tasks to assess cognition. Anthropometrics and aerobic fitness (via 6‐min walk test) were also determined. There was no difference in BMI (29.7 ± 6.4 vs. 31.9 ± 6.3 kg/m2, p = 0.083) or aerobic fitness (15.5 ± 2.6 vs. 15.1 ± 2.6 mL/kg/min; p = 0.445) between normotensive and hypertensive groups. However, normotensive participants had higher MTL dynamic network flexibility compared to hypertensive participants (0.42 ± 0.23 vs. 0.32 ± 0.25 mL, p = 0.040), and this was associated with higher mean arterial blood pressure (r = −0.21, p = 0.036). Therefore, hypertensive older African Americans demonstrated lower MTL dynamic network flexibility compared to their normotensive counterparts independent of BMI and aerobic fitness. A growing number of studies from a range of different countries have observed an association between sleep duration and cardiovascular disease. The objective of this paper was to examine the associations between sleep duration and prevalent cardiovascular disease in a large sample of Australian adults, and identify the sociodemographic and health-related factors moderating these associations. Participants included 218 155 Australian adults aged 45 years and over. The results indicated that 6 h versus 7 h sleep was associated with increased odds of heart disease [odds ratio (OR) = 1.11 (1.06-1.17)], diabetes [OR = 1.15 (1.09-1.22)], stroke [OR = 1.25 (1.14-1.38)] and high blood pressure [OR = 1.08 (1.04-1.11)]. Long sleep (≥9 h sleep) was also related to elevated odds of heart disease [OR = 1.14 (1.09-1.19)], diabetes [OR = 1.25 (1.19-1.31)], stroke [OR = 1.50 (1.38-1.62)] and high blood pressure [OR = 1.04 (1.01-1.08)] compared to 7 h sleep. Some of these relationships varied by age, and were not evident in adults aged 75 years and over. The magnitude of some associations varied significantly by body mass index, smoking and physical activity. The public health importance of chronic kidney disease (CKD) has only come to be appreciated in the last decade. While glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and urinary albumin creatinine levels are highly predictive of mortality, thresholds that may be useful for screening may be much closer to ‘normal’ than generally recognised. When optimising the balance between true negative and true positive mortality prediction, GFR from creatinine and GFR from cystatin C and albumin creatinine ratios all seem to perform similarly. Among the older population, mortality rates with creatinine-based GFR are lowest for those with levels between 60 and 90 ml/min/1.73 m2, unlike with GFR from cystatin C, where mortality rates climb monotonically with declining GFR. Thus, the validity of creatinine-based GFR in older community-dwelling individuals is questionable. Nationally, representative data suggest management of modifiable cardiovascular risk factors in adults with CKD is far from optimal. This paper explores the possibility that robust associations between declining kidney function and cardiovascular outcomes could be caused by an unknown, confounding, shared-risk factors and extrapolates findings from renal transplant donor populations to support this hypothesis. While coronary heart disease (CHD) for decades was understood as mainly a male disease group, it has through the last years become increasingly evident that it is now an important disease causing premature death also in the female populations throughout the Westernized world. The present paper scrutinizes via literature searches and discussions of relevant data the sex and gender differences in psychological risk factors for CHD with an emphasis on female risk. It is concluded that the risk factor picture in females is, due to limited research, still far from clear, even if there are indications of sex differences in both the risk factors picture and the trajectories of the disease development. In an interview study of decision-making about statins, many participants said they took pills regularly, yet described themselves as 'not really pill-takers'. This paper explores this paradox and its implications. The practice of pill-taking itself can constitute a challenge to the presentation of moral adequacy, beyond the potential for rendering stigmatised illnesses visible. Meeting this challenge involves a complex process of calibrating often-conflicting moral imperatives: to be concerned, but not too concerned, over one's health; to be informed, but not over-informed; and deferential but not over-deferential to medical expertise. This calibration reflects a broader tension between rival tropes: embracing medical progress and resisting medicalisation. Participants who take statins present them as unquestionably necessary; 'needing' pills, as opposed to choosing to take them, serves as a defence against the devalued identity of being a pill-taker. However, needing to take statins offers an additional threat to identity, because taking statins is widely perceived to be an alternative strategy to 'choosing a healthy lifestyle'. This perception underpins a responsibilising health promotion discourse that shapes and complicates the work participants do to avoid presenting themselves as 'pill-takers'. HIV infection is now considered a chronic, treatable disease, although treatment is associated with increased rates of coronary artery disease ( CAD). Increased risk of CAD in HIV-infected patients has been associated with the inflammatory sequelae of the infection as well as the greater prevalence of cardiac risk factors in HIV-positive populations and the side effects of life-prolonging antiretroviral therapies. Patients with HIV infection now have a 1.5 to 2-fold greater risk of developing CAD compared with noninfected individuals, raising the independent risk of CAD in HIV infection to levels similar to those in diabetes. Despite this increased risk, screening and other adjuvant assessment tools are lacking. In this paper we explore the current climate of CAD in the contemporary HIV-infected population and look at the tools used in the assessment and management of patients as well as the limitations of these approaches for this at-risk population group. Background and aims There is increasing research evidence about the causal role of alcohol in cancer, accompanied by unclear and conflicting messages in the media. This paper aimed to clarify the strength of the evidence for alcohol as a cause of cancer, and the meaning of cause in this context. Methods Recent epidemiological and biological research on alcohol and cancer was reviewed and summarized, drawing upon published meta-analyses identified from the Medline database and the archives of the International Agency for Research on Cancer. More recent epidemiological studies not included in these publications were also reviewed. A brief description of the nature of causal inference in epidemiology was used to frame discussion of the strength of the evidence that alcohol causes cancer, and contrast this with the case for a protective association of alcohol with cardiovascular disease. Results The usual epidemiological understanding of a cause is a factor that increases the incidence of a condition in the population. In the context of a body of epidemiological evidence of an association of alcohol consumption with a disease, the inference that it is a causal association requires alternative explanations of the observed finding to be judged unlikely. Even without complete knowledge of biological mechanisms, the epidemiological evidence can support the judgement that alcohol causes cancer of the oropharynx, larynx, oesophagus, liver, colon, rectum and breast. The measured associations exhibit gradients of effect that are biologically plausible, and there is some evidence of reversibility of risk in laryngeal, pharyngeal and liver cancers when consumption ceases. The limitations of cohort studies mean that the true effects may be somewhat weaker or stronger than estimated currently, but are unlikely to be qualitatively different. The same, or similar, epidemiological studies also commonly report protection from cardiovascular disease associated with drinking but a high level of scepticism regarding these findings is now warranted. Conclusions There is strong evidence that alcohol causes cancer at seven sites in the body and probably others. Current estimates suggest that alcohol-attributable cancers at these sites make up 5.8% of all cancer deaths world-wide. Confirmation of specific biological mechanisms by which alcohol increases the incidence of each type of cancer is not required to infer that alcohol is a cause. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many studies, including self‐controlled case series (SCCS) studies, are being undertaken to quantify the risks of complications following infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2), the virus that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19). One such SCCS study, based on all COVID‐19 cases arising in Sweden over an 8‐month period, has shown that SARS‐CoV‐2 infection increases the risks of AMI and ischemic stroke. Some features of SARS‐CoV‐2 infection and COVID‐19, present in this study and likely in others, complicate the analysis and may introduce bias. In the present paper we describe these features, and explore the biases they may generate. Motivated by data‐based simulations, we propose methods to reduce or remove these biases. Early research suggested that bone morphogenetic protein 10 (BMP10) is primarily involved in cardiac development and congenital heart disease processes. BMP10 is a newly identified cardiac‐specific protein. In recent years, reports have emphasized the effects of BMP10 on myocardial apoptosis, fibrosis and immune response, as well as its synergistic effects with BMP9 in vascular endothelium and role in endothelial dysfunction. We believe that concentrating on this aspect of the study will enhance our knowledge of the pathogenesis of diabetes and the cardiovascular field. However, there have been no reports of any reviews discussing the role of BMP10 in diabetes and cardiovascular disease. In addition, the exact pathogenesis of diabetic cardiomyopathy is not fully understood, including myocardial energy metabolism disorders, microvascular changes, abnormal apoptosis of cardiomyocytes, collagen structural changes and myocardial fibrosis, all of which cause cardiac function impairment directly or indirectly and interact with one another. This review summarizes the research results of BMP10 in cardiac development, endothelial function and cardiovascular disease in an effort to generate new ideas for future research into diabetic cardiomyopathy. Introduction: Cardio-oncology focuses on diagnosing and preventing adverse cardiovascular outcomes in cancer patients. Interdisciplinary cardio-oncology services address the spectrum of prevention, detection, monitoring, and treatment of cancer patients at risk of cardio-toxicity and aim to improve the continuum of cardiac care for oncology patients. The goal of this study was to engage clinician and administrative stakeholders to assess multilevel needs, barriers, and expectations regarding cardio oncology services. Methods: We interviewed clinicians and administrators at an academic medical center using the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) to understand multilevel determinants influencing cardio-oncology service implementation. We also conducted a web-based survey to assess the knowledge, attitude, and perceptions of cardio-oncology services held by local and regional clinicians who may refer cardio-oncology patients to the study site. Results: Multiple facilitators to cardio-oncology service implementation emerged. Interview participants believed cardio-oncology services could benefit patients and the organization by providing a competitive advantage. A majority (74%) of clinicians surveyed thought a cardio-oncology service would significantly improve cancer patients' prognoses. Implementation barriers discussed included costs and a siloed organizational structure that complicated cross-service collaboration. In the clinician survey, differences in the views toward cardio-oncology services held by cardiology versus oncology providers would need to be negotiated in future cardio-oncology service development. For example, while most providers accepted similar risk of cardio-toxicity when consenting patients for cancer therapy in a curative setting, cardiologists accepted significantly higher levels of risk than oncologists in an incurable setting: 75% of oncologists accepted 1-5% risk; 77% of cardiologists accepted =5% risk). Conclusions: Participants supported implementation and development of cardiooncology services. Respondents also noted multi-level barriers that could be addressed to maximize the potential for success.
