Piled rafts are foundation systems that combine a shallow raft with the minimum number of piles beneath the raft, in order to achieve the necessary bearing capacity and the acceptable settlement restrictions. Its use is increasing in many countries, especially in skyscrapers in Europe and Asia, for which the foundation design can result in hundreds of piles due to the high load magnitude. However, controlling the most influencing variables on the foundation behaviour, while achieving an acceptable cost, is a challenge for designers. This paper presents an optimization procedure to determine the best raft thickness, number of piles and their location. The branch and bound optimization method was combined with a specific computational programme for piled raft analysis (GARP) providing an automatic technique to obtain the lower cost design. A building in Brazil and theoretical examples of a piled raft with different load sets are presented and analysed using this numerical approach. The results show that the presented automatic procedure provides interesting solutions, economically enhancing the design of piled raft foundation systems. This paper presents a comparative analysis between steel and steel‐concrete composite connections with extended end plate. Numerical models were developed using ATENA 3D and calibrated from the results obtained by Figueiredo (2004) – University of São Paulo (USP – São Carlos) ‐ Brazil. A parametric analysis, achieved by varying the diameter for the bolts and the stud bolts, showed that considering the concrete component in the connection increased the joint's stiffness by 41%. In addition, it showed that among all the parameters analyzed the bolt diameter was the most relevant one, capable of altering the characterization of the connection's ultimate limit state. In this paper, a stabilized space–time Petrov–Galerkin finite element model of coastal ocean circulation is derived. Continuous linear interpolation in space and time is employed and a spatial unstructured mesh of triangular elements is used. To simulate the hydro-thermodynamical ocean behaviour a gravity reduced model is proposed. This model solves the motion and continuity hydrodynamic equations coupled with the advection–diffusion transport equation for temperature which governs the heat exchanges in the upper layer. The model is used to evaluate the main dynamical features of the coastal waters of the Rio de Janeiro State, namely: cold plumes, coastal jets and the influence of the warmer water bays. Numerical experiments are performed to highlight the typical observed events of coastal upwelling phenomena and their interaction with the existing coastal bays and the offshore conditions. Such experiments deal with a series of idealized northeast wind field forcing patterns, showing the solutions dependence on the horizontal structure of the wind fields in relation to the coastline configuration. Composition and spatial diversity patterns of retained and discarded catches in the deep-water shrimp (family Aristeidae) trawling fishery off Brazil were assessed by observers on-board commercial operations in 2005 and 2006. These trawls caught 19 440 kg and 180 076 individuals of which 76·0 and 65·2%, respectively, were discarded at sea. Finfishes represented 54% of the numerical catch but were almost fully discarded (98%). Crustaceans represented 40% of the numerical catch and were mostly retained (80%). The scarlet shrimp Aristaeopsis edwardsiana comprised approximately half of the retained catch. The remainder of the retained proportion comprised mainly the red giant shrimp Aristaeomorpha foliacea, the alistado shrimp Aristeus antillensis and small quantities of Argentine hake Merluccius hubbsi and gulf hake Urophycis mystacea. Discards comprised 108 species including 72 fish species, 19 crustaceans and 10 cephalopods. The large-scaled lanternfish Neoscopelus macrolepidotus was dominant in the discards, followed by the benthopelagic fishes Monomitopus agassizii, Synagrops bellus, Dibranchus atlanticus and Gadella imberbis and various macrurid species. This fishery was restricted to a limited bathymetric range (700-800 m), where discrete megafauna assemblages exist and may have been significantly affected. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
