* Adults aged 21 to 65 with DSM-IV alcohol dependence were randomized to baclofen 30 or 90 mg/day or placebo for 16 weeks. * Baclofen resulted in a reduction in heavy drinking days and an increase in alcohol-abstinent days compared with placebo, with the 90-mg dose showing greater efficacy than the lower dose. * Women did not show as much improvement with the 90-mg dose compared with men., A 16-week randomized trial has found that the GABA agonist baclofen was more effective than placebo in increasing abstinence from alcohol use and in reducing heavy drinking days.
