The method of approximate particular solutions (MAPS) was first proposed by Chen et al. in Chen, Fan, and Wen, Numer Methods Partial Differential Equations, 28 (2012), 506–522. using multiquadric (MQ) and inverse multiquadric radial basis functions (RBFs). Since then, the closed form particular solutions for many commonly used RBFs and differential operators have been derived. As a result, MAPS was extended to Matern and Gaussian RBFs. Polyharmonic splines (PS) has rarely been used in MAPS due to its conditional positive definiteness and low accuracy. One advantage of PS is that there is no shape parameter to be taken care of. In this article, MAPS is modified so PS can be used more effectively. In the original MAPS, integrated RBFs, so called particular solutions, are used. An additional integrated polynomial basis is added when PS is used. In the modified MAPS, an additional polynomial basis is directly added to the integrated RBFs without integration. The results from the modified MAPS with PS can be improved by increasing the order of PS to a certain degree or by increasing the number of collocation points. A polynomial of degree 15 or less appeared to be working well in most of our examples. Other RBFs such as MQ can be utilized in the modified MAPS as well. The performance of the proposed method is tested on a number of examples including linear and nonlinear problems in 2D and 3D. We demonstrate that the modified MAPS with PS is, in general, more accurate than other RBFs for solving general elliptic equations.© 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Splines are part of the standard toolbox for the approximation of functions and curves in ℝd. Still, the problem of finding the spline that best approximates an input function or curve is ill-posed, since in general this yields a "spline" with an infinite number of segments. The problem can be regularized by adding a penalty term for the number of spline segments. We show how this idea can be formulated as an i¾?0-regularized quadratic problem. This gives us a notion of optimal approximating splines that depend on one parameter, which weights the approximation error against the number of segments. We detail this concept for different types of splines including B-splines and composite Bezier curves. Based on the latest development in the field of sparse approximation, we devise a solver for the resulting minimization problems and show applications to spline approximation of planar and space curves and to spline conversion of motion capture data.

Analytical particular solutions of the augmented polyharmonic spline (APS) associated with the polyharmonic and poly-Helmholtz operators and their products were derived by Tsai et al. (Eng Anal Bound Elem 33 (2009), 514). In addition, it has been mentioned that the particular solution associated with a coupled system of partial differential equations (PDEs) can be derived from the prescribed solutions by using the Hormander operator decomposition technique. In this article, this derivation procedure is demonstrated via Mindlin thick-plate problems, which are governed by a coupled system of three second-order PDEs. Analytical particular solutions of displacements, shear forces, and bending or twisting moments corresponding to the polyharmonic spline and monomials are all explicitly derived. Analytical particular solutions of splines and monomials are obtained for problems of thin plate resting on Pasternak foundation under arbitrary loadings, which are governed by a fourth-order partial differential equation (PDEs). These analytical particular solutions are valuable when the arbitrary loadings are approximated by augmented polyharmonic splines (APS) constructed by splines and monomials. In our derivations, the real coefficient operator in the governing equation is decomposed into two complex coefficient operators whose particular solutions are known in literature. Then, we use the difference trick to recover the analytical particular solutions of the original operator. In addition, we show that the derived particular solution of spline with its first few directional derivatives are bounded as r → 0. This solution procedure may have the potential in obtaining analytical particular solutions of higher order PDEs constructed by products of Helmholtz-type operators. Furthermore, we demonstrate the usages of these analytical particular solutions by few numerical cases in which the homogeneous solutions are complementarily solved by the method of fundamental solutions (MFS). © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this note we study the nonexistence of local minima of the supersolutions of the polyharmonic equations on the balls under generalized homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. The analysis of transient heat conduction problems in large, complex computational domains is a problem of interest in many technological applications including electronic cooling, encapsulation using functionally graded composite materials, and cryogenics. In many of these applications, the domains may be multiply connected and contain moving boundaries making it desirable to consider meshless methods of analysis. The method of fundamental solutions along with a parallel domain decomposition method is developed for the solution of three-dimensional parabolic differential equations. In the current approach, time is discretized using the generalized trapezoidal rule transforming the original parabolic partial differential equation into a sequence of non-homogeneous modified Helmholtz equations. An approximate particular solution is derived using polyharmonic splines. Interfacial conditions between subdomains are satisfied using a Schwarz Neumann–Neumann iteration scheme. Outside of the first time step where zero initial flux is assumed, the initial estimates for the interfacial flux is given from the converged solution obtained during the previous time step. This significantly reduces the number of iterations required to meet the convergence criterion. The accuracy of the method of fundamental solutions approach is demonstrated through two benchmark problems. The parallel efficiency of the domain decomposition method is evaluated by considering cases with 8, 27, and 64 subdomains. Copyright 2004 © John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Bolle, we prove the existence of infinitely many solutions for perturbed symmetric polyharmonic problems with non–homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. An extension to the higher order case of the estimate from below for the critical values due to K. Tanaka is obtained.

A method of interpolation of the boundary variables that uses spline functions associated with singular elements is presented. This method can be used in boundary element method analysis of 2-D problems that have points where the boundary variables present singular behaviour. Singular-ended splines based on cubic splines and Overhauser splines are developed. The former provides C2-continuity and the latter C1-continuity across element edges. The potentialities of the methodology are demonstrated analysing the dynamic response of a 2-D rigid footing interacting with a half-space. It is shown that, for a given number of elements at the soil–foundation interface, the singular-ended spline interpolation increases substantially the displacement convergence rate and delivers smoother traction distributions. In the first section of this paper, some non-local boundary value problem for the polyharmonic equation in the plane is considered. This problem consists in determining solution of the polyharmonic equation satisfying some special non-local-type boundary condition on two curves. The existence theorem is proved. In the second section, an example for the case of the biharmonic equation is considered. In the third section, some non-local, non-linear problem of Riquier type is examined. The Riquier-type problem consists in determining the polyharmonic function in the plane whose value together with its successive Laplacians are prescribed on the boundary. The existence theorem is proved and an example for the case of the biharmonic equation is considered.

Higher order elliptic partial dierential equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions in general do not satisfy a maximum principle. Polyharmonic operators on balls are an exception. Here it is shown that in IR2 small perturbations of polyharmonic operators and of the domain preserve the maximum principle. Hence the Green function for the clamped plate equation on an ellipse with small eccentricity is positive.

We report on recent developments concerning adaptive finite particle methods, which are used for the numerical simulation of multiscale phenomena in time-dependent evolution processes. The proposed concept relies on a finite volume approach, which we combine with WENO reconstruction from particle average values. In this method, polyharmonic splines are key tools for both the optimal recovery from scattered particle averages and the construction of customized adaption rules. The natural spline functions of even degree introduced in [1] are used or the numerical solution of delay differential equations.

Spherical spline functions are introduced by use of Green's surface functions with respect to the (Laplace-)Beltrami operator of the (unit) sphere. Natural (spherical) spline functions are used to interpolate data discretely given on the sphere. A method is presented that allows the smoothing of irregularities in measured values or experimental data. Extensions of Peano's theorem and Sard's theory of best approximation to the spherical case are given by integral formulas. Schoenberg's theorem is transcribed into spherical nomenclature.

This paper is concerned with spline methods in a reproducing kernel Hilbert space consisting of functions defined and harmonic in the outer space of a regular surface (e.g. sphere, ellipsoid, telluroid, geoid, (regularized) earth's surface). Spline methods are used to solve interpolation and smoothing problems with respect to a (fundamental) system of linear functional giving information about earth's gravity field. Best approximations to linear functionals are discussed. The spline of interpolation is characterized as the spline of best approximation in the sense of an appropriate (energy) norm.

An interpolation procedure using harmonic splines is described and analyzed for solving (exterior) boundary value problems of Laplace's equation in three dimensions (from discretely given data). The theoretical and computational aspects of the method are discussed. Some numerical examples are given.
