Abstract Speleothems are mineral deposits capable of recording detrital and/or chemical remanent magnetization at annual timescales. They can offer high‐resolution paleomagnetic records of short‐term variations in Earth's magnetic field, crucial for understanding the evolution of the dynamo. Owing to limitations on the magnetic moment sensitivity of commercial cryogenic rock magnetometers (∼10−11 Am2), paleomagnetic studies of speleothems have been limited to samples with volumes of several hundreds of mm3, averaging tens to hundreds of years of magnetic variation. Nonetheless, smaller samples (∼1–10 mm3) can be measured using superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) microscopy, with a sensitivity better than ∼10−15 Am2. To determine the application of SQUID microscopy for obtaining robust high‐resolution records from small‐volume speleothem samples, we analyzed three different stalagmites collected from Lapa dos Morcegos Cave (Portugal), Pau d'Alho Cave (Brazil), and Crevice Cave (United States). These stalagmites are representative of a range of magnetic properties and have been previously studied with conventional rock magnetometers. We show that by using SQUID microscopy we can achieve a five‐fold improvement in temporal resolution for samples with higher abundances of magnetic carriers (e.g., Pau d'Alho Cave and Lapa dos Morcegos Cave). In contrast, speleothems with low abundances of magnetic carriers (e.g., Crevice Cave) do not benefit from higher resolution analysis and are best analyzed using conventional rock magnetometers. Overall, by targeting speleothem samples with high concentrations of magnetic carriers we can increase the temporal resolution of magnetic records, setting the stage for resolving geomagnetic variations at short time scales.

Abstract A large‐scale apparent polar wander occurred during the Jurassic interval, which is interpreted as true polar wander (TPW). As the motion is nearly orthogonal to the TPW axis, the North China Block (NCB) experienced the largest latitudinal and environmental changes and provides unique constraints on Jurassic TPW. However, due to the lack and uneven quality of paleomagnetic data, TPW records in North China are controversial. Here, we report a new paleomagnetic pole (80.8°N, 13.0°E, A95 = 7.4°) from the late Jurassic sills and dykes that intrude the Nandaling and Xiahuayuan formations in the NCB. The new pole places the NCB at 36.8° ± 7.4°N at 155 ± 3.4 Ma, using Beijing as the reference site. Combined with the reliable Jurassic poles, our study reveals a large, steady southward shift of 37.3° ± 7.2° for the NCB during the Middle and Late Jurassic, and reflects a component of TPW. The position of ∼155 Ma pole also supports significant TPW prior to ∼160 Ma and agrees with proposals attributing the diachronous 165–155 Ma aridification across the Eastern Asian blocks.

Abstract We investigate full vector paleomagnetic changes recorded in high‐resolution sediments of Petermann Fjord, North Greenland, deposited over the last 6 kyr, in the context of the recent rapid changes in the geomagnetic field. A Paleomagnetic Secular Variation (PSV) stack (inclination, declination, and relative paleointensity) was reconstructed using four marine sediment cores with an independent age model constrained by seven radiocarbon ages. Magnetic investigations demonstrate that the paleomagnetic signal is carried by low coercivity ferrimagnetic minerals and is well reproduced in all cores, attesting to the quality and reliability of the paleomagnetic recording of these sediments. This signal is broadly consistent in directional changes with distant records in North America and the northern North Atlantic at centennial and millennial timescales, and has millennial scale intensity variations that are consistent with model predictions. The offset between a magnetization age determined through comparison with a northern North Atlantic PSV reference curve, GREENICE, and the radiocarbon age model indicates either a reasonable lock‐in depth of magnetization (∼11 cm from the coretop) or centennial‐scale reservoir age variation through time in the fjord. Reconstructed virtual geomagnetic pole (VGP) migration for the last 6 kyr shows that the recent migration of the magnetic North Pole is consistent with secular paleomagnetic variations on geologic timescales. Our results suggest that magnetic field intensity variations (temporal and spatial) are linked to magnetic flux lobe dynamics and influence the VGP migration.

Abstract The Early Paleozoic paleolatitudinal position of the terranes in the northern Tibetan Plateau is the key to unraveling the evolution of the Proto‐Tethys Ocean. We present the first Late Cambrian paleomagnetic results from the Oulongbuluke terrane (OT), in the northern Tibetan Plateau. The mean paleomagnetic direction for 16 sites is Ds = 196.2°, Is = −36.9° with κs = 31.5, α95 = 6.7°, corresponding to a paleopole at 68.2°S/51.9°E with dp/dm = 4.6°/7.8°. Rock magnetic and petrologic analyses demonstrate the primary origin of the magnetic mineralogy. This paleomagnetic result defines the Late Cambrian paleolatitude of the OT as 20.6 ± 4.6°S (reference point: 37.2°N/96.6°E). Combined paleomagnetic and geological evidence suggests that the terranes in the northern Tibetan Plateau were located to the northwest of the Indian plate of Gondwana during the Late Cambrian.

Abstract Dating young lava flows is essential for understanding volcano's eruption frequency, yet challenging due to methodological limitations of commonly used dating techniques. Ruapehu (Aotearoa New Zealand) produced many lava flows during the Holocene, but constraints on the timing of these eruptions are scarce. Here, we use paleomagnetic dating to deliver new eruption ages of 18 lava flows with uncertainties ranging between 500 and 2,700 years (at the 95% confidence level). Comparison between lava flows' paleomagnetic directions and a local paleosecular variation record indicates that the large lava flow field located on the Whakapapa area was emplaced during at least three distinct eruptive episodes between 10600 and 7400 BP. Two of these episodes closely followed a large collapse event that affected Ruapehu's northern area and generated large volumes of lava between 10600 and 8800 BP, with the third episode producing less voluminous lava flows between 8100 and 7400 BP. Following a smaller collapse of the southeastern sector of the edifice at ca. 5300 BP, several low‐volume lava flows were emplaced during at least two distinct eruptive episodes prior to ca. 1000 BP, which supplied the Whangaehu valley with lava. The youngest age inferred from our data represents the youngest eruption age provided for a lava flow outside Ruapehu's summit region. This research provides greater detail to the Holocene effusive chronology at Ruapehu, shedding light on partial cone reconstructions after edifice collapses during the Holocene, and the time relationships between trends observed in its effusive and explosive activity.

Abstract The ability of rocks to hold a reliable record of the ancient geomagnetic field depends on the structure and stability of magnetic domain‐states contained within constituent particles. In paleomagnetic studies, the Day plot is an easily constructed graph of magnetic hysteresis parameters that is frequently used to estimate the likely magnetic recording stability of samples. Often samples plot in the region of the Day plot attributed to so‐called pseudo‐single‐domain particles with little understanding of the implications for domain‐states or recording fidelity. Here we use micromagnetic models to explore the hysteresis parameters of magnetite particles with idealized prolate and oblate truncated‐octahedral geometries containing single domain (SD), single‐vortex and occasionally multi‐vortex states. We show that these domain states exhibit a well‐defined trend in the Day plot that extends from the SD region well into the multi‐domain region, all of which are likely to be stable remanence carriers. We suggest that although the interpretation of the Day plot and its variants might be subject to ambiguities, if the magnetic mineralogy is known, it can still provide some useful insights about paleomagnetic specimens' dominant domain state, average particle sizes and, consequently, their paleomagnetic stability.

Abstract Crustal deformation and hydrothermal percolation related to the India‐Asia collision have caused extensive remagnetization of the Tethyan Himalaya Terrane (THT). The present work identified three phases of regional remagnetization during 62.3–50.0 Ma for the east‐central THT. Consequently, a model of three‐stage India‐Asia collision was proposed. The east‐central THT first collided with the southward migrated southern margin of the Lhasa Terrane (LT) at 5.4 ± 0.9°N during 62.3–60.9 Ma. Subsequently, the THT continuously moved northward and pushed the southern margin of the LT back to its original position prior to the initiation of fore‐arc and back‐arc extension on both sides of the Gangdese magmatic arc. Since the final suturing of the THT with Asia at ∼10°N during 59.8–58.0 Ma, the east‐central THT remained stationary until India collided with it at 10.9 ± 5.1°N at ∼50.0 Ma.

Abstract We document an apparent downward displacement of the Matuyama‐Brunhes magnetic reversal by ∼20 m at Scotia Sea International Ocean Discovery Program Site U1538 (Pirie Basin) by comparison with the well‐defined paleomagnetic record at nearby Site U1537 (Dove Basin). Detailed stratigraphic correlation between the two sites is possible due to similar lithologic variations. However, the two sites have distinctly different porewater geochemistry. Notably, Site U1538 indicates a greater demand for electron acceptors to oxidize organic carbon and Fe2+ enrichment below the depth of SO42− depletion. Magnetic parameters indicate enrichment of an authigenic magnetic mineral with strong remanence properties around the depth of SO42− depletion (∼46 m at Site U1538) relative to magnetic parameters at correlative depths at Site U1537. Fe2+ enrichment below the depth of SO42− depletion is not predicted based on the energetically favorable order of electron acceptors for microbial respiration but is documented here and in other depositional settings. This indicates Fe2+ production exceeds the production of H2S by SO42− reduction, providing a geochemical environment that favors the production and preservation of ferrimagnetic remanence‐bearing iron sulfides over paramagnetic pyrite and, thus, a mechanism for deep chemical remanent magnetization acquisition at depths of tens of meters. The influence of authigenic ferrimagnetic iron sulfides on paleomagnetic signals can be difficult to demonstrate with magnetic properties alone; therefore, this finding has implications for evaluating the fidelity of magnetostratigraphic records with complementary geochemical data. Such situations should be considered in other depositional environments with similar porewater Fe2+ accumulation below the SO42− reduction depth.

Abstract Micromagnetic modeling allows the systematic study of the effects of particle size and shape on the first‐order reversal curve (FORC) magnetic hysteresis response for magnetite particles in the single‐domain (SD) and pseudo‐single domain (PSD) particle size range. The interpretation of FORCs, though widely used, has been highly subjective. Here, we use micromagnetics to model randomly oriented distributions of particles to allow more physically meaningful interpretations. We show that one commonly found type of PSD particle—namely the single vortex (SV) particle—has far more complex signals than SD particles, with multiple peaks and troughs in the FORC distribution, where the peaks have higher switching fields for larger SV particles. Particles in the SD to SV transition zone have the lowest switching fields. Symmetrical and prolate particles display similar behavior, with distinctive peaks forming near the vertical axis of the FORC diagram. In contrast, highly oblate particles produce “butterfly” structures, suggesting that these are potentially diagnostic of particle morphology. We also consider FORC diagrams for distributions of particle sizes and shapes and produce an online application that users can use to build their own FORC distributions. There is good agreement between the model predictions for distributions of particle sizes and shapes, and the published experimental literature.

Abstract Paleosecular variation analysis is a primary tool for characterizing ancient geomagnetic behavior and its evolution through time. This study presents a new high‐quality directional data set, paleosecular variation of the Paleogene (PSVP), with and without correction for serial correlation, compiled from 1,667 sites from 45 different localities from the Paleogene and late Cretaceous (84–23 Ma). The data set is used to study the variability, structure, and latitude dependence of the geomagnetic field during that period by varying selection criteria and PSV models. Modeled values for the equatorial virtual geomagnetic pole (VGP) dispersion have over‐lapping uncertainty intervals within their uncertainty bounds between 8.3° and 18.6° for the past 250 Ma. We investigate the suitability of two descriptive models of PSV, Model G‐style quadratic fits and covariant Giant Gaussian Process models, and find that both styles of model fail to satisfactorily reproduce the latitude dependent morphology of PSV, but suggest that estimates of the equatorial VGP dispersion may still robustly characterize aspects of Earth's long‐term field morphology. During this time where the PSV behavior has not changed substantially, the reversal frequency has varied widely. The lack of a clear relationship between PSV behavior and reversal frequency is not trivially explained in the context of published findings regarding numerical geodynamo simulations.

Abstract The rich and extensively studied archaeological record of the Near East provides an opportunity to develop a comprehensive archaeomagnetic dataset for exploring the behavior of the geomagnetic field with high precision. The Levantine archaeomagnetic curve (LAC) project is an ongoing effort to develop a continuous high‐resolution geomagnetic intensity curve for the Levant and Mesopotamia. The first version of the LAC covered the period between 3000 and 550 BCE. Here, we report archaeointensity data from 169 samples compiled into 32 groups dating between the 7th and the 1st centuries BCE aiming at extending the LAC up to the end of the first millennium BCE. Twenty‐two groups are assembled from storage jar handles bearing different types of royal seal impressions, which were used in Judah as part of a taxation administrative system. These groups are combined with 10 other groups of pottery assemblages, three of which are from Hellenistic destruction layers dated using radiocarbon and coins. The new curve shows that the Levantine Iron Age Anomaly (LIAA) spanned 550 years (1100 ‐ 550 BCE) and that the rate of decline during the last spike around 600 BCE could have reached ∼0.6 μT/year. During the 6th century, the virtual axial dipole moment (VADM) dropped from 160 ZAm2 to 125 ZAm2 after which field intensity only slightly increased to 135 ZAm2, until another considerable decline to ∼90 ZAm2 during the 3rd to the 1st centuries BCE. We highlight the archaeomagnetic implication of the new curve in inferring the relative chronological relationship between different stamp types.

Abstract Volcanic rocks are considered reliable recorders of past changes in the Earth's magnetic field. Recent flows, however, sometimes fail to produce the known magnetic field at the time of cooling. Previous research on Mt. Etna suggests paleomagnetic data might not be accurately recorded. Here we test the accuracy of paleomagnetic data obtained from Mt. Etna lavas by comparing paleomagnetic data from historical flows to direct measurements of the magnetic field above the current topography. The inclinations and intensities in both data sets are biased toward lower values, while there is no such trend for the declination. Inclinations are on average 2.9° lower than expected; intensities are on average 8.8 µT lower. The deviations from the expected values depend on the height above the flow. Moreover, the inclinations and intensities vary as a function of topography. Both are higher above ridges and lower in gullies; the variations within a site are up to 14.1° in inclination and 12.9 µT for intensity. To suppress this paleomagnetic data bias it is important to take samples several meters apart and from different parts of the flow whenever possible. While this leads to a higher degree of scatter in paleodirections, the results better represent the Earth's magnetic field at the time of cooling. This emphasizes the importance of reporting paleomagnetic sampling strategies in detail.

Abstract Magnetic signals in igneous rocks arise from assemblages of iron‐oxide bearing minerals that differ in for example, size, shape, and chemistry. Paleomagnetic measurements on bulk samples measure millions of such grains simultaneously, producing a statistical ensemble of the magnetic moments of the individual grains. Scanning magnetometry techniques such as the Quantum Diamond Microscope (QDM) measure magnetic signals on micrometer scales, allowing the identification of magnetic moments of individual grains in a sample using for example, Micromagnetic Tomography (MMT). Here we produce a grain‐size distribution of iron‐oxides in a typical Hawaiian basalt from the superparamagnetic threshold (∼40 nm) to grains with a diameter of 10 µm. This grain‐size distribution is obtained by combining FIB‐SEM and MicroCT data from sister specimens, and normalizing them to the mineral surface area of non‐magnetic minerals. Then we use this grain‐size distribution to determine the contributions of individual magnetic carriers to bulk magnetic measurements and surface magnetometry. We found that measurements on bulk samples are sensitive to relatively small grain sizes in the realm of single domain or vortex states (1 µm. This implies that bulk measurements cannot be compared straightforwardly to signals from surface magnetometry from the same sample. Moreover, our observations explain why MMT results are insensitive to the presence of many small grains in a sample that intuitively should hamper their outcome.

Abstract In this study we use micromagnetic modeling to show that the magnetizations of magnetically single‐vortex particles rotate toward the stress axis on the application of a differential compression stress. This is the exact opposite response to magnetically single‐domain particles, which previously provided the theoretical underpinning of the effect of stress on the magnetic signals of rocks. We show that the magnetization directions of single‐vortex and equant single‐domain particles are altered by much lower stresses than previously predicted, c.f., 100 versus 1,000 MPa; where a change in magnetization is defined as a rotation of >3° after the removal of stress. The magnetization intensity of assemblages also drops by ∼20%–30% on the application and removal of stress of ∼100 MPa. Given that single‐vortex particles are now thought to dominate the magnetization of most rocks, future studies should account for paleomagnetic directional uncertainties and potential underestimation of the ancient magnetic field intensity.

Abstract Growth strata are important for understanding regional tectonic evolution. However, it is difficult to identify growth strata in the field, because of subsequent intensive modification and erosion. To address this problem, we studied two paleomagnetic sections at the stable deposition setting and the growth end of the Miocene growth strata of the Gengma Basin. Average inclinations of the two sections show a systematic deviation of 4.7° ± 5.2°. The anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility results for the growth end of the section A demonstrate a sedimentary fabric. However, the tilt‐corrected K3 axis deviates to the southwest from the normal direction of the bedding by 5.4° ± 3.8°, the magnetic foliation deviates to the equatorial plane by 5.3° ± 4.7°. The K3 axis is perpendicular to the bedding at the stable deposition setting. The deviation of the K3 axis from the normal direction of bedding is interpreted as the growth angle, which can be used to correct the paleomagnetic inclination data.

Abstract The timing of formation of the Hegenshan suture is crucial to understanding the evolution of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB). Here we present a well‐dated paleomagnetic pole (103 samples from 15 sites, 36.7°N/29.2°E, A95 = 3.3°) that passed a positive fold test, a reversal test, and a conglomerate test from the ∼250 Ma upper Gunbayn Formation andesites in the southeastern Mongolia Block (MOB). The high‐quality paleomagnetic database may demonstrate that the MOB drifted rapidly southward and collided with the Xilinhot–Songliao Block between 256 and 250 Ma, resulting in the closure of the Hegenshan Ocean at ∼250 Ma. The Hegenshan suture and the Solonker suture were formed almost simultaneously and marked the final closure of the Paleo‐Asian Ocean.

Abstract The South Qiangtang block of the Qinghai‐Tibet Plateau represents an area critical to understanding the late Paleozoic and early Mesozoic history of the Tethyan realm, but its drift history remains poorly constrained. Here we report a new quantitative paleogeographic constraint for the South Qiangtang block from a paleomagnetic study of Late Triassic volcanic rocks of the Xiaoqiebao Formation. A characteristic remanent magnetization isolated from 25 sites passes both fold‐ and reversal tests, and likely represents a primary magnetization. On the basis of these data, we estimate that the South Qiangtang block occupied a paleolatitude of 30.1 ± 4.6°N at ca. 222 Ma. When combined with existing paleomagnetic constraints, these new results indicate that the South Qiangtang block (and other “Cimmerian” blocks) moved rapidly northward (in true latitude) between the middle Permian and Late Triassic. Our new data further suggest that the southern branch of the Paleo‐Tethys (Longmuco‐Shuanghu Ocean) likely closed by the mid‐Late Triassic.

Abstract Ancient magnetization(s), often recorded by hematite (Fe2O3), provide key paleomagnetic constraints on plate interactions through time. Primary remanent magnetizations may be modified or overprinted by secondary processes that complicate interpretations of paleomagnetic data. Hematite (U‐Th)/He (hematite He) dating has the potential to resolve when secondary magnetizations were acquired. Here, we compare hematite He data and paleomagnetic results in Paleoproterozoic crystalline rocks, meters below a major nonconformity in the Colorado Front Range, USA. Prior work and new rock magnetic data indicate that pervasive hematite alteration records a secondary chemical remanent magnetization (CRM) during the Permo‐Carboniferous Reverse Superchron, coincident with the Ancestral Rocky Mountain orogeny. We target minor hematite‐coated faults cutting basement for (U‐Th)/He analyses because they are of sufficient hematite purity to yield geologically meaningful dates. Two samples yield overlapping and scattered individual hematite He dates ranging from ∼138 to 27 Ma (n = 33), significantly younger than the age of the late Paleozoic CRM. Scanning electron microscopy, electron probe microanalysis, and Raman spectroscopy indicate that aliquots have variable grain size distributions and fluorocarbonate impurities. Thermal history models support hematite on fault surfaces mineralized coeval with CRM acquisition during the late Paleozoic, and hematite He data scatter reflects variable He loss during Mesozoic burial owing to differences in grain size distribution from fault slip comminution and in chemistry among aliquots. Our results underscore the differences in temperature sensitivity and sampling requirements between paleomagnetic and hematite He investigations and illustrate that hematite He dates will usually be younger than preserved remanent magnetizations.

Abstract Quantifying the contributions of distinct mineral populations in bulk magnetic experiments greatly enhances the analysis of environmental and rock magnetism studies. Here, we develop a new method of parametric unmixing of susceptibility components in hysteresis loops. Our approach is based on a modified Gamma‐Cauchy exponential model that accounts for variable skewness and kurtosis. The robustness of the model is tested with synthetic curves that examine the effects of noise, sampling, and proximity (similar coercivities) of susceptibility components. We provide a Python‐based script, the Hist‐unmix, which allows the user to adjust a forward model of up to three ferromagnetic components as well as a dia/paramagnetic contribution. Optimization of all the parameters is achieved through least squares fitting (Levenberg‐Marquardt method), with uncertainties of each inverted parameter calculated through a Monte Carlo error propagation approach. For each ferromagnetic component, it is possible to estimate the saturation magnetization (Ms), saturation remanent magnetization (Mrs) and the mean coercivity (Bc). Finally, Hist‐unmix was applied to a set of weakly magnetic carbonate rocks from Brazil, which typically show distorted hysteresis loops (wasp‐waisted and potbellied). For these samples, we resolved two components with distinct coercivities. These results are corroborated by previous experimental data, showing that the lower branch of magnetic hysteresis can be modeled by the presented approach and might offer important mineralogical information for rock magnetic and paleomagnetic studies.

Abstract Our understanding of Earth's paleogeography relies heavily on paleomagnetic apparent polar wander paths (APWPs), which represent the time‐dependent position of Earth's spin axis relative to a given block of lithosphere. However, conventional approaches to APWP construction have significant limitations. First, the paleomagnetic record contains substantial noise that is not integrated into APWPs. Second, parametric assumptions are adopted to represent spatial and temporal uncertainties even where the underlying data do not conform to the assumed distributions. The consequences of these limitations remain largely unknown. Here, we address these challenges with a bottom‐up Monte Carlo uncertainty propagation scheme that operates on site‐level paleomagnetic data. To demonstrate our methodology, we present an extensive compilation of site‐level Cenozoic paleomagnetic data from North America, which we use to generate a high‐resolution APWP. Our results demonstrate that even in the presence of substantial noise, polar wandering can be assessed with unprecedented temporal and spatial resolution.

Abstract Some rocks contain multiple remanence “components,” each of which preserves a record of a different magnetic field. The temperature ranges over which these remanence components unblock can overlap, making it difficult to determine their directions. We present a data analysis tool called Thermal Resolution Of Unblocking Temperatures (TROUT) that treats the process of thermal demagnetization as a function of temperature (or alternating field demagnetization as a function of coercivity). TROUT models the unblocking temperature/coercivity distributions of components in a demagnetization experiment, allowing these distributions to overlap. TROUT can be used to find the temperatures/coercivities over which paleomagnetic directions change and when two directional components overlap resulting in curved demagnetization trajectories. When applied to specimens given multi‐component Thermoremanent Magnetizations (TRMs) in the laboratory, the TROUT method estimates the temperature at which the partial TRMs were acquired to within one temperature step, even for specimens with significant overlap. TROUT has numerous applications: knowing the temperature at which the direction changes is useful for experiments in which the thermal history of a specimen is of interest (e.g., emplacement temperature of pyroclastic deposits, re‐heating of archaeological artifacts, reconstruction of cooling rates of igneous bodies). The ability to determine whether a single component or multiple components are demagnetizing at a given temperature is useful for choosing appropriate ranges of temperatures to use in paleodirection/intensity experiments. Finally, the width of the range of temperature overlap may be useful for inferring the composition, grain size and domain state of magnetic mineral assemblages.

Abstract The natural remanent magnetization (NRM) of high sedimentation rate sediments provides significant information about paleomagnetic secular variation of the Earth's magnetic field and can also potentially be used for stratigraphy. However, NRM acquisition depends on conditions inherent to the depositional environment. In addition to recording a precise annual chronology, varved sediments reflect marked annual sedimentary changes. The Earth's magnetic field does not vary significantly over such a short period, so magnetic changes recorded by varves are expected to reflect the influence of depositional parameters on the recording process. We focus here on a sequence of 27 ± 1 varves from the former proglacial Lake Ojibway (∼8.5 ka cal BP) from which individual cm‐thick summer and winter beds were sampled. Paleomagnetic, granulometric and geochemical analyses were conducted on each bed. A mean inclination shallowing of 24.3° is observed in winter beds, along with an 11.3° shallowing in summer beds. Magnetic declinations follow, on average, the expected field direction, but differences of up to 20° occur between successive beds. Summer beds are thicker than winter beds and have stronger magnetic susceptibility, higher Ca/Fe ratios and coarser sedimentary and magnetic grains. This grain size pattern reflects the input of coarser detrital particles during summer, while the finer fraction remained in suspension until it was deposited in winter. A combination of differential compaction between the winter and summer beds, seasonally varying physical and magnetic properties of sediments, and delayed NRM acquisition explains the variable and coercivity‐dependent inclination shallowing.

Abstract When and how the collision between India‐Asia occurred continue to be debated. We report new paleomagnetic data (Ds = 158.8°, Is = 7.8°, ks = 81.3, α95 = 5.1°, N = 11 sites) from limestone of the Zongpu Formation Member I in the Tingri, which indicate that the Tethyan Himalaya was situated at 3.9 ± 2.6°S during 62‐59 Ma. This implies that Greater India was ∼900 km and that Tethyan Himalaya did not break off from India, which left a ∼2,000 km Neo‐Tethys Ocean that challenges the prevailing hypothesis that the initial collision of India–Asia occurred during this period. The drift rate of the India plate, with an average rate of 160 ± 28 mm/a during 60‐50 Ma, implies that the northern margin (e.g., the Tingri, Gyangze, Gamba, and Zanskar areas) of Greater India almost simultaneously collided with Asia at ∼50 Ma, quasi‐synchronously, and closing the Neo‐Tethys Ocean.

Abstract Paleomagnetic studies of meteorites provide unique constraints on the evolution of magnetic fields in the early solar system. These studies rely on the identification of magnetic minerals that can retain stable magnetizations over ≳4.5 billion years (Ga). The ferromagnetic mineral tetrataenite (γ''‐Fe0.5Ni0.5) is found in iron, stony‐iron and chondrite meteorite groups. Nanoscale intergrowths of tetrataenite have been shown to carry records of paleomagnetic fields, although the effect of magnetostatic interactions on their magnetic remanence acquisition remains to be fully understood. Tetrataenite can also occur as isolated, non‐interacting, nanoscale grains in many meteorite groups, although the paleomagnetic potential of these grains is particularly poorly understood. Here, we aim to improve our understanding of tetrataenite magnetization to refine our knowledge of existing paleomagnetic analyses and broaden the spectrum of meteorite groups that can be used for future paleomagnetic studies. We present the results of analytical calculations and micromagnetic modeling of isolated tetrataenite grains with various geometries. We find that tetrataenite forms a stable single domain state at grain lengths between 6 and ∼160 nm dependent on its elongation. It also possesses a magnetization resistant to viscous remagnetization over the lifetime of the solar system at 293 K. At larger grain sizes, tetrataenite's lowest energy state is a lamellar two‐domain state, stable at Ga‐scale timescales. Unlike many other magnetic minerals, tetrataenite does not form a single‐vortex domain state due to its large uniaxial anisotropy. Our results show that single domain and two‐domain tetrataenite grains carry an extremely stable magnetization and therefore are promising for paleomagnetic studies.

Abstract The Philippine Sea Plate in the West Pacific is a unique natural laboratory to study subduction dynamics and the evolution of upper plate magmatism following subduction initiation. To investigate these processes, International Ocean Discovery Program Expedition 351 recovered at Site U1438, located in a rear‐arc position, a complete sedimentary sequence from recent age to the early Eocene and the top of the underlying volcanic basement. The recovered cores offered the opportunity to study for the first time and in unprecedented detail the styles, products, and timing of the volcanic events that marked the emplacement, growth, and demise of the Kyushu‐Palau volcanic arc following the inception of the Izu‐Bonin‐Mariana subduction. Here, we report a magnetostratigraphy for Site U1438 based on ∼60,000 remanence directions isolated from 1,063 archive half core sections and 429 discrete specimens. We identified 142 magnetic reversals and correlated 115 of them with the geomagnetic polarity timescale. When combined with additional biostratigraphic and geochronological constraints, our magnetostratigraphy allowed construction of a high‐resolution age model for Site U1438 and the determination of changes in sedimentation rates. We show that following subduction initiation at 52–50 Ma and the emplacement of basalts in the rear‐arc at 48.7 Ma, a diffuse volcanism in the rear‐arc (48.4–45.6 Ma) preceded the true emplacement of the Kyushu‐Palau arc at 40.2 Ma, which then grew through four compositionally distinct eruptive phases until 28.8 Ma. Subsequent rollback of the Pacific slab triggered rifting of the arc (28.8–24.3 Ma) and ultimately back‐arc spreading in the Shikoku and Parece Vela basins.

Abstract High‐temperature melting in mantle plumes produces voluminous eruptions that are often temporally coincident with mass extinctions. Paleocene Baffin Island lavas—products of early Iceland mantle plume activity—are exceptionally well characterized geochemically but have poorly constrained stratigraphy, geochronology, and eruptive tempos. To provide better geologic context, we measured seven stratigraphic sections of the volcanic deposits and collected paleomagnetic data from 38 sites in the lavas and underlying Cretaceous sediments (Quqaluit Fm.). The average paleomagnetic pole from this study does not overlap with the expected pole for a stable North American locality at 60 Ma, yet the data have sufficient dispersion to average out secular variation. After ruling out other possibilities, we find that the picrites were probably erupted during a polarity transition, over less than 5 kyr. If so, the average eruption interval was ∼67 years per flow for the thickest sequence of exposed lavas. We also calculate that the flood basalts had a minimum total volume of ∼176 km3 (excluding submerged lavas in Baffin Bay). This implies a minimum eruption rate of ∼0.035 km3 yr−1, which is similar to rates found in West Greenland lavas but less than rates found in larger flood basalts. Despite this, the Baffin and West Greenland lavas temporally correlate with the “End C27n event” (a period of ∼2°C global warming) and may be its underlying cause.

Abstract The recently developed Micromagnetic Tomography (MMT) technique combines advances in high resolution scanning magnetometry and micro X‐ray computed tomography. This allows precise recovery of magnetic moments of individual magnetic grains in a sample using a least squares inversion approach. Here we investigate five factors, which are governing the mathematical validity of MMT solutions: grain concentration, thickness of the sample, size of the sample's surface, noise level in the magnetic scan, and sampling interval of the magnetic scan. To compute the influence of these parameters, we set up series of numerical models in which we assign dipole magnetizations to randomly placed grains. Then we assess how well their magnetizations are resolved as function of these parameters. We expanded the MMT inversion to also produce the covariance and standard deviations of the solutions, and use these to define a statistical uncertainty ratio and signal strength ratio (SSR) for each solution. We show that the magnetic moments of a majority of grains under the inspected conditions are solved with very small uncertainties. However, increasing the grain density and sample thickness carry major challenges for the MMT inversions, demonstrated by uncertainties larger than 100% for some grains. Fortunately, we can use the SSR to extract grains with the most accurate solutions, even from these challenging models. Hereby we have developed a quick and objective routine to individually select the most reliable grains from MMT results. This will ultimately enable determining paleodirections and paleointensities from large subsets of grains in a sample using MMT.

Abstract This study presents the first set of Holocene, high‐quality absolute paleointensity data from Alaska, USA. Existing paleointensity data for the Holocene are generally located at mid‐northern latitudes in North America, Europe, the Middle East, and eastern Asia. Relatively few data are from the Alaska region. IZZI‐modified paleointensity experiments were conducted on glassy volcanic materials from Aniakchak volcano, a mid‐ to high‐latitude composite volcano on the Alaska‐Aleutian arc. The CCRIT selection criteria were applied to the paleointensity results. A total of 30 specimens from six samples with estimated ages ranging from 1931 CE to 2,300 years before present passed all selection criteria. The sample‐mean paleointensities ranged from 49.5 to 68.0 microTesla (μT). The sample‐mean paleointensity results are comparable to modeled intensities, however all except for one sample‐mean paleointensity are lower than those predicted by geomagnetic field models. The paleointensity estimate for the historical 1931 CE eruption was about 15 μT greater than the expected field strength. This overestimate may result from unrecognized alteration or non‐ideal remanence carriers in this sample. Further evaluation of samples from the 1931 CE eruption using a Bayesian estimation method resulted in a paleointensity estimate that encompasses the historical field strength within uncertainty. These new paleointensity results are a valuable contribution to the mid‐ to high‐northern latitude paleomagnetic data set. Incorporation of these data into future geomagnetic field models will improve the predictions of geomagnetic field behavior in the Alaska region.

Abstract New geochronologic and paleomagnetic data from the North American Midcontinent Rift (MCR) reveal the synchronous emplacement of the Beaver River diabase, the anorthosite xenoliths within it, and the Greenstone Flow—one of the largest lava flows on Earth. A U‐Pb zircon date of 1091.83 ± 0.21 Ma (2σ) from one of the anorthosite xenoliths is consistent with the anorthosite cumulate forming as part of the MCR and provides a maximum age constraint for the Beaver River diabase. Paired with the minimum age constraint of a cross‐cutting Silver Bay intrusion (1091.61 ± 0.14 Ma; 2σ), these data tightly bracket the age of the Beaver River diabase to be 1091.7 ± 0.2 Ma (95% CI), coeval with the eruption of the Greenstone Flow (1091.59 ± 0.27 Ma; 2σ)—which is further supported by indistinguishable tilt‐corrected paleomagnetic pole positions. Geochronological, paleomagnetic, mineralogical and geochemical data are consistent with a hypothesis that the Beaver River diabase was the feeder system for the Greenstone Flow. The large areal extent of the intrusives and large estimated volume of the volcanics suggest that they represent a rapid and voluminous ca. 1,092 Ma magmatic pulse near the end of the main stage of MCR magmatism.

Abstract High‐quality paleointensity data are essential for improving our understanding of the geomagnetic field; however, it is challenging to find materials that reliably record full vector magnetization going back in time. Here, we examine a new candidate material for paleointensity studies: clinkers, which are rocks that have been baked, metamorphosed, or melted by underlying coal seam fires. Previous studies conducted on clinkers suggest that they may be high‐fidelity magnetic field recorders. However, due to the inhomogeneity of clinker deposits and limited scope of previous studies, it is unknown under what conditions these conclusions hold true. To better assess this, we quantified the variation of magnetic properties within clinker deposits collected from the Powder River Basin, Montana, as a function of lithology, oxidation state, distance from the coal seam, and location. Our results indicate that the clinker products contain three main magnetic minerals: magnetite, hematite, and the rare ε‐Fe2O3. Clinker lithology was found to be the primary control on magnetic mineralogy, where strongly baked sediment and porcellanite are dominated by varying proportions of hematite, ε‐Fe2O3, and magnetite, and paralavas are dominated by low‐Ti magnetite. All clinker materials are thermally stable and likely experienced temperatures in excess of the magnetite Curie temperature. Grain size analysis indicates that the magnetic particles in all clinker materials are amenable to high‐quality paleointensity study. In total, our study confirms that clinkers should be reliable full vector paleomagnetic recorders.

Abstract Magnetic fields in the early solar system may have driven the inward accretion of the protoplanetary disk (PPD) and generated instabilities that led to the formation of planets and ring and gap structures. The Allende carbonaceous chondrite meteorite records a strong early solar system magnetic field that has been interpreted to have a PPD, dynamo, or impact‐generated origin. Using high‐resolution magnetic field imaging to isolate the magnetization of individual grain assemblages, we find that only Fe‐sulfides carry a coherent magnetization. Combined with rock magnetic analyses, we conclude that Allende carries a magnetization acquired during parent body chemical alteration at ~3.0–4.2 My after calcium aluminum‐rich inclusions in an >40 µT magnetic field. This early age strongly favors a magnetic field of nebular origin instead of dynamo or solar wind alternatives. When compared to other paleomagnetic data from meteorites, this strong intensity supports a central role for magnetic instabilities in disk accretion and the presence of temporal variations or spatial heterogeneities in the disk, such as ring and gap structures.

Abstract The assumptions of paleointensity experiments are violated in many natural and archeological materials, leading to Arai plots which do not appear linear and yield inaccurate paleointensity estimates, leading to bias in the result. Recently, paleomagnetists have adopted sets of “selection criteria” that exclude specimens with nonlinear Arai plots from the analysis, but there is little consensus in the paleomagnetic community on which set to use. In this study, we present a statistical method we call Bias Corrected Estimation of Paleointensity (BiCEP), which assumes that the paleointensity recorded by each specimen is biased away from a true answer by an amount that is dependent a single metric of nonlinearity (the curvature parameter k⃗) on the Arai plot. We can use this empirical relationship to estimate the recorded paleointensity for a specimen where k⃗=0, that is, a perfectly straight line. We apply the BiCEP method to a collection of 30 sites for which the true value of the original field is well constrained. Our method returns accurate estimates of paleointensity, with similar levels of accuracy and precision to restrictive sets of paleointensity criteria, but accepting as many sites as permissive criteria. The BiCEP method has a significant advantage over using these selection criteria because it achieves these accurate results without excluding large numbers of specimens from the analysis. It yields accurate, albeit imprecise estimates from sites whose specimens all fail traditional criteria. BiCEP combines the accuracy of the strictest selection criteria with the low failure rates of the less reliable “loose” criteria.

Abstract Micromagnetic tomography aims at reconstructing large numbers of individual magnetizations of magnetic particles from combining high‐resolution magnetic scanning techniques with micro X‐ray computed tomography (microCT). Previous work demonstrated that dipole moments can be robustly inferred, and mathematical analysis showed that the potential field of each particle is uniquely determined. Here, we describe a mathematical procedure to recover higher orders of the magnetic potential of the individual magnetic particles in terms of their spherical harmonic expansions (SHE). We test this approach on data from scanning superconducting quantum interference device microscopy and microCT of a reference sample. For particles with high signal‐to‐noise ratio of the magnetic scan we demonstrate that SHE up to order n = 3 can be robustly recovered. This additional level of detail restricts the possible internal magnetization structures of the particles and provides valuable rock magnetic information with respect to their stability and reliability as paleomagnetic remanence carriers. Micromagnetic tomography therefore enables a new approach for detailed rock magnetic studies on large ensembles of individual particles.

Abstract Recent micromagnetic simulations predict that particles have an abnormal region of low magnetic stability for grain sizes near the domain state transitions from single domain to single vortex. The implications of this zone are not yet fully understood, but if the size range of this window changes as a function of applied field and temperature then it is likely to contribute to observational uncertainties in paleomagnetic recordings. The narrow size range of this zone means that its effects are difficult to identify when integrated across the much wider distribution of grain sizes present in a sample. Here we report a method of examining the unstable region using low temperature oxidation of magnetite. The rock magnetic experiments on partially oxidized particles with a median diameter close to the unstable zone are reinterpreted using micromagnetic simulations of a multilayer core‐shell structure. The predicted magnetic properties exhibit significantly improved agreement with experimental data than that of the previously reported single core‐shell coupled geometry. The observed changes in remanence and coercivity are associated with predicted domain structure changes near a proposed magnetic unstable zone (∼80–∼120 nm), and so provide the first experimental indication of the existence of such a region. We also demonstrate that magnetic remanence in particles with grain sizes outside this size range were stable to maghemitization. The research provides ideas for the experimental study of the “magnetic unstable zone” and is significant to the correct interpretation of magnetic recordings. Finally, the partially oxidized magnetite particles are able to record paleomagnetic signals.

Abstract The net tectonic rotation method is an alternative to paleomagnetic tilt corrections. The method was originally developed for sedimentary rocks and lavas, which have paleohorizontal indicators, but was later adapted for dikes by assuming that dikes intrude vertically. We conduct multiple numerical experiments that demonstrate geometric flaws in the net tectonic rotation method if dikes are not quite vertical prior to deformation. These flaws can impact the interpretations from the method, but the size of the impact depends on the original dike strike, dike dip, and the paleomagnetic reference direction. Our experiments show the worst behavior occurs for dikes that are approximately perpendicular to the reference declination. In addition, the results for dipping dikes of all initial strikes become increasingly distorted as the reference direction's inclination increases. Using data from two field areas in Cyprus and northern Iceland, we compare the application of net tectonic rotation to alternative techniques—relative comparisons and spatial regressions—that do not require an assumption of initially vertical dikes. We conclude with a list of questions that workers should answer prior to future application of net tectonic rotation to dikes.

Abstract The theory for recording of thermally blocked remanences predicts a quasilinear relationship between low fields like the Earth's in which rocks cool and acquire a magnetization. This serves as the foundation for estimating ancient magnetic field strengths. Addressing long‐standing questions concerning Earth's magnetic field requires a global paleointensity data set, but recovering the ancient field strength is complicated because the theory only pertains to uniformly magnetized particles. A key requirement of a paleointensity experiment is that a magnetization blocked at a given temperature should be unblocked by zero‐field reheating to the same temperature. However, failure of this requirement occurs frequently and the causes and consequences of failure are understood incompletely. Recent experiments demonstrate that the remanence in many samples typical of those used in paleointensity experiments is unstable, exhibiting an “aging” effect in which the (un)blocking temperature spectra can change over only a few years resulting in nonideal experimental behavior. While a fresh remanence may conform to the requirement of equality of blocking and unblocking temperatures, aged remanences may not. Blocking temperature spectra can be unstable (fragile), which precludes reproduction of the conditions under which the original magnetization was acquired. This limits our ability to acquire accurate and precise ancient magnetic field strength estimates because differences between known and estimated fields can be significant for individual specimens, with a low field bias. Fragility of unblocking temperature spectra may be related to grain sizes with lower energy barriers and may be detected by features observed in first‐order reversal curves.

Abstract Paleointensity.org is an online, open source, application to analyze paleointensity data produced by the most common paleointensity techniques. Our application currently supports four different methods: thermal Thellier (all variations), microwave Thellier, pseudo‐Thellier, and the multispecimen protocol. Data can be imported using a variety of input file formats such as ThellierTool files, the generic PmagPy file format, and a number of lab‐specific formats. The data for the individual paleointensity methods are visualized by the relevant graphs and parameters, which are updated dynamically while interpreting the data. Beyond manual interpretation, Paleointensity.org features an autointerpreter for specimen level Thellier‐type data. Interpretations and data can be exported to csv and MagIC files. Moreover, it is possible to export the local storage containing all data, saved interpretations, and settings. This file can be shared among researchers or attached to a paper as supporting information. Because of its many features and ease of use, Paleointensity.org is a major step forward in enhancing an open paleomagnetic community in which data can be shared, checked, and reused in line with the findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable data principles.

Abstract Scientific communities are placing an increasing emphasis on the implementation of data management protocols concerning data archiving and distribution. For instance, every proposal submitted to the European Horizon 2020 program, as well as to the National Science Foundation in the USA, requires a dedicated section that outlines project data management and accessibility. The widely adopted FAIR data guidelines identify core principles concerning modern data management conventions. The wide variety of data formats, the low data volume, and the general lack of a culture of data sharing makes that the paleomagnetic community rarely follows any of the FAIR principles. Most institutions define their own data formats and use in‐house software to analyze their demagnetization data, which are critical to Paleomagnetic research. Efforts to overcome these problems exist in the form of the MagIC database for data archiving, and the online paleomagnetic data analysis and interpretation platform Paleomagnetism.org. In this contribution, we describe the second iteration of Paleomagnetism.org: an online multiplatform open‐source environment for paleomagnetic data analysis. This update comprises a full overhaul of the application to satisfy the increasingly demanding data management requirements. The application now facilitates a workflow that aligns with FAIR guidelines by documenting data provenance. All data analyzed through the application are easily submitted to a public data library that distributes data and results through an HTTPS web service that lives up to modern data management standards.

Abstract Iron and stony‐iron meteorites form the Widmanstätten pattern during slow cooling. This pattern is composed of several microstructures whose length‐scale, composition and magnetic properties are dependent upon cooling rate. Here we focus on the cloudy zone: a region containing nanoscale tetrataenite islands with exceptional paleomagnetic recording properties. We present a systematic review of how cloudy zone properties vary with cooling rate and proximity to the adjacent tetrataenite rim. X‐ray photoemission electron microscopy is used to compare compositional and magnetization maps of the cloudy zone in the mesosiderites (slow cooling rates), the IAB iron meteorites and the pallasites (intermediate cooling rates), and the IVA iron meteorites (fast cooling rates). The proportions of magnetic phases within the cloudy zone are also characterized using Mössbauer spectroscopy. We present the first observations of the magnetic state of the cloudy zone in the mesosiderites, showing that, for such slow cooling rates, tetrataenite islands grow larger than the multidomain threshold, creating large‐scale regions of uniform magnetization across the cloudy zone that render it unsuitable for paleomagnetic analysis. For the most rapidly cooled IVA meteorites, the time available for Fe‐Ni ordering is insufficient to allow tetrataenite formation, again leading to behavior that is unsuitable for paleomagnetic analysis. The most reliable paleomagnetic remanence is recorded by meteorites with intermediate cooling rates ( ∼ 2–500 °C Myr −1) which produces islands that are “just right” in both size and degree of Fe‐Ni order.

Abstract The Zebín Volcano, Czech Republic, is a quarried tuff cone that offers the opportunity to understand emplacement processes responsible for magma transport through a pyroclastic cone and magmatic processes involved in its development. A high‐resolution ground magnetometry survey, electrical resistivity tomography, and refraction seismic were conducted to supplement field mapping of the size, shape, and inner structure of the volcanic system. The Zebín Volcano yields normal polarity rocks, and the cone is underlain by a complex and branching magma feeder system with several diverging dikes. Samples were collected at 24 sites from feeder dikes and the main conduit for anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility and paleomagnetic analysis. Anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility results yield inferred magma flow directions indicating subhorizontal magma flow toward and away from the axial conduit as well as both upward and downward flow. Paleomagnetic data from all sites are normal polarity with statistically distinct remanence directions between some sites that indicate that significant time passed or deformation occurred during the growth of this volcanic system. 40Ar/39Ar isochron ages of groundmass provide emplacement ages of 18.38 ± 0.03 and 18.45 ± 0.03 Ma, whereas a weighted mean date of 18.52 ± 0.03 Ma for hornblende provides an eruption age. We argue that the Zebín Volcano evolved from a polyphase feeding system and through a complex feeder network. This detailed study shows that many monogenetic volcanoes deserve highly detailed study, as their subtleties can provide insight into broader crustal and magmatic environment during magmatism.

We obtain new 40Ar/39Ar ages for three lavas that record part of the Matuyama‐Brunhes geomagnetic field reversal process on Guadeloupe. These lavas record a reversed‐transitional‐reversed magnetostratigraphy and yield a weighted mean isochron age of 785.2 ± 5.2 ka (2σ analytical uncertainty) relative to an age for the Fish Canyon sanidine standard of 28.201 Ma. This age is of greater accuracy than ages obtained previously by K‐Ar dating. These lavas may record directional fluctuations occurring between the Matuyama‐Brunhes precursor and the final directional reversal. Such variations have been observed in some globally distributed coupled paleomagnetic and oxygen isotope marine sedimentary records of the Matuyama‐Brunhes reversal. Previous paleointensity estimates from these lavas indicate reduced, but fluctuating field strength during this time.

Single‐domain magnetite particles produced by magnetotactic bacteria (magnetosomes) and aligned in chains are of great interest in the biosciences and geosciences. Here, we investigated angular variation of magnetic properties of aligned Magnetospirillum magneticum AMB‐1 cells, each of which contains one single fragmental chain of magnetosomes. With measurements at increasing angles from the chain direction, we observed that (i) the hysteresis loop gradually changes from nearly rectangular to a ramp‐like shape (e.g., Bc and remanence decrease), (ii) the acquisition and demagnetization curves of IRM shift toward higher fields (e.g., Bcr increases), and (iii) the FORC diagram shifts toward higher coercivity fields (e.g., Bc,FORC increases). For low‐temperature results, compared to unoriented samples, the samples containing aligned chains have a much lower remanence loss of field‐cooled (δFC) and zero‐field‐cooled (δZFC) remanence upon warming through the Verwey transition, higher δ‐ratio (δ = δFC/δZFC) for the measurement parallel to the chain direction, and lower δ‐ratio, larger δFC and δZFC values for the perpendicular measurement. Micromagnetic simulations confirm the experimental observations and reveal that the magnetization reversal of magnetosome chain appears to be noncoherent at low angles and coherent at high angles. The simulations also demonstrate that the angular dependence of magnetic properties is related to the dispersion degree of individual chains, indicating that effects of anisotropy need to be accounted for when using rock magnetism to identify magnetosomes or magnetofossils once they have been preserved in aligned chains. Additionally, this study experimentally demonstrates an empirical correspondence of the parameter Bc,FORC to Bcr rather than Bc, at least for magnetite chains with strong shape anisotropy. This suggests FORC analysis is a good discriminant of magnetofossils in sediments and rocks.

Tholeiite of the oldest oceanic crust was drilled during ODP Legs 129 and 185 at Hole 801C in the western Pacific. Fresh appearing submarine basaltic glass (SBG) was recovered from the tholeiites (∼167 Ma) which has been shown to be nearly ideal for determining absolute paleointensity. Paleointensities of the younger, off‐axis, alkalic basalts (∼160 Ma), overlying the tholeiites, had been studied earlier. Here we report results from the older tholeiitic (on‐axis) sequence. We subjected a total of 73 specimens from 17 cooling units to absolute paleointensity experiments. Of these, 30 specimens and six cooling unit averages met our strictest reliability criteria, yielding an average of 11.9 ± 3.9 μT. The bulk of evidence suggests a paleolatitude of the site of 14°S (with an uncertainty of 10°). This translates the intensity to a value for the virtual axial dipole moment of 28 ZAm2, slightly lower than values determined from the plagioclase crystals in the three cooling units of the younger alkalic basalts overlying the tholeiites (Tarduno & Cottrell, 2005). Our value is low when compared to the long‐term median value of the field of 42 ZAm2. Our results and those of the published literature therefore support the contention of a low magnetic field strength in the Jurassic (average of 28 ± 14 ZAm2; N = 138 individual estimates), as initially suggested by Prévot et al. (1990). Our interpretation of the body of available data argue for low field strengths for the entire Jurassic extending into the early Cretaceous.

Paleomagnetic analysis and radiocarbon dating of an expanded Holocene deep‐sea sediment sequence recovered by Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Expedition 303 from Labrador Sea Site U1305 (Lat.: 57°28.5 N, Long.: 48°31.8 W, water depth 3459 m) provides insights into mechanisms that drive both paleomagnetic secular variation (PSV) and magnetization acquisition in deep‐sea sediments. Seventeen radiocarbon dates on planktonic foraminifera define postglacial (ca. 8 ka) sedimentation rates as ranging from 35 to > 90 cm/kyr. Alternating field (AF) demagnetization of u‐channel samples show that these homogeneous sediments preserve a strong, stable, and consistently well‐defined component magnetization. Normalized remanence records pass reliability criteria for relative paleointensity (RPI) estimates. Assuming that the age of magnetization is most accurately defined by well dated PSV records with the highest sedimentation rates, allows us to estimate and correct for temporal offsets at Site U1305 interpreted to result from postdepositional remanence acquisition at a depth of ∼20 cm. Comparisons indicate that the northern North Atlantic PSV and RPI records are more consistent with European than North American records, and the evolution of virtual geomagnetic poles (VGP) are temporally and longitudinally similar to global reconstructions, though with much larger latitudinal variation. The largest deviations from a geocentric axial dipole (GAD) are observed during times of the highest intensities, in contrast to the usual assumption. These observations are consistent with the idea that PSV in the North Atlantic and elsewhere during the Holocene results from temporal oscillations of high‐latitude flux concentrations at a few recurrent locations.
