An expanding body of research has investigated factors that influence fathers' involvement with their children. Generally overlooked has been the role of pregnancy intentions on men's fathering behaviors. In this study, the authors used nationally representative data from men interviewed in the 2002 and 2006-2010 National Survey of Family Growth to examine relationships between fathers' pregnancy intentions and multiple aspects of their parental involvement. Using propensity score methods to control for confounding, they found that men were less likely to live with a young child from a mistimed than intended pregnancy and that among nonresident fathers, mistimed pregnancies were associated with lower levels of visitation and consequently reduced participation in caregiving and play. Among both resident and nonresident fathers, mistimed pregnancies were also associated with lower self-appraisals of fathering quality when compared with intended pregnancies; for nonresident fathers, however, this association was moderated by other involvement.

With changing conditions affecting receipt of postabortion care, an updated estimate of the incidence of treatment for complications from unsafe pregnancy termination is needed to inform policies and programmes. National estimates of facility-based treatment for complications in 26 countries form the basis for estimating treatment rates in the developing world. An estimated seven million women were treated in the developing world for complications from unsafe pregnancy termination in 2012, a rate of 6.9 per 1000 women aged 15–44 years. Regionally, rates ranged from 5.3 in Latin America and the Caribbean to 8.2 in Asia. Results inform policies to improve women's health. Aim The potential beneficial interaction between erlotinib and chemotherapy may require sequencing or pharmacodynamic separation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and tolerance of sequential erlotinib and gemcitabine versus gemcitabine monotherapy as first-line therapy in elderly or ECOG PS-2 patients with advanced non-small cell lung carcinoma. Methods The primary objective of this multicenter randomized Phase II study was progression-free survival (PFS). Secondary objectives were overall response rate (ORR), disease control rate, response duration, overall survival and safety. Patients were randomized to either gemcitabine (1250 mg/m2 Day 1, 8 q28 days) followed by erlotinib (150 mg/day on day 15 through day 28), (EG-arm), or gemcitabine monotherapy (1000 mg/m2 Days 1, 8, 15 q28 days), (G-arm) for up to six cycles. Results Fifty-four patients were recruited, 28 G-arm and 26 EG-arm. Overall, efficacy results were not significantly different between study arms. Median PFS and ORR for the G- versus EG-arms were 8.0 versus 10.3 weeks (hazard ratio 1.3; 95% confidence interval [0.63;2.68]; P = 0.48) and 7.1 versus 3.8 percent respectively (difference −3.30; 95% confidence interval [−17.5;10.9]). The majority of adverse events (AEs) in both arms were Grade 1–2. The commonest AEs recorded in the EG- and G-arms were rash-like events (65 percent) and nausea (42 percent) respectively. Four patients (17 percent) in EG-arm and five (16 percent) in G-arm experienced at least one treatment-related serious AE. Conclusions In this study, patients with non-small cell lung carcinoma at ECOG PS-2 or aged ≥70 years derived no efficacy advantage from sequential erlotinib in combination with gemcitabine relative to gemcitabine alone. No unexpected safety findings were noted.

Meteorological assessment of wildland fire danger has traditionally involved the identification of several synoptic weather types empirically determined to influence wildfire spread. Specifically, in the Great Lakes Region, high wildfire danger is often witnessed in association with northwesterly synoptic-scale flow aloft. Such synoptic-scale flow is regularly associated with the development of upper-level frontal zones also known as upper-level jet/front systems, which are often characterised by intrusions of stratospheric air into the troposphere. The notion that upper-frontal development can play an important role in promoting wildfire spread is advanced through interrogation of the output from a fine-scale numerical simulation of a documented explosive wildfire case; the Mack Lake Fire of May 1980. The Mack Lake case was characterised by a developing upper-level front embedded within a shortwave trough in the vicinity of the fire location. The upper-level front originated in northwesterly flow in central Canada as an upper-tropospheric ridge amplified over western North America. A thermally indirect circulation at the jet exit region both contributed to the intensification of the front and was associated with a maximum in quasi-geostrophic descent at mid-levels upstream of the fire region. The subsidence ushered dry air from the middle and upper-troposphere downward along sloping isentropes adiabatically warming and drying it along the way. A well-developed dry air intrusion associated with the operation of these processes extended to nearly the 750 hPa level far downstream from the actual upper-frontal zone supplying the fire environment with dry air that originated in the upper-troposphere/lower stratosphere. The organised subsidence was also responsible for downward advection of high momentum air from within the frontal zone into the fire environment, further influencing the wildfire spread. We conclude that upper-frontal processes, characteristic of northwesterly synoptic-scale flow, are likely a contributing factor to the prevalence of wildfire spread under such synoptic-scale conditions. Intellectual abilities of 300 children with serious emotional disorders, referred to either psychiatric day- or inpatient-hospital treatment, were compared. Comparisons also were made to WISC-R standardization data. The findings indicated that children referred to inpatient settings were similar in intellectual competency to children in day treatment. Also, children with serious emotional disorders did not appear to differ strongly in clinically meaningful ways from the WISC-R standardization sample, a finding that replicates results of other investigators. Three distinct, clinically useful profiles emerged from a cluster analysis of the total group that may be practical in planning educational and therapeutic interventions in treatment settings for seriously disturbed children. The profiles underscored the wide range of intellectual abilities represented among these children.

The intellectual performances of children with a variety of psychiatric disorders were examined and compared with the findings from a similar study by Hodges and Plow (1990). Mean IQ scores were in the average range for both study samples, and no significant differences were found in WISC-R summary scores. Nevertheless, the Hodges and Plow findings were only partially corroborated. They observed, for instance, a relative deficit in verbal abilities for conduct-disordered children and lower IQ scores for children with anxiety disorders vs. children with all other disorders. Our replication study found no significant differences among the disorder groups for any of the scores examined. Possible explanations for the divergence in findings are discussed.

A spatiotemporal linear programming model (GAMS) was constructed to simulate the catfish production and marketing system in the U.S. in order to study the economic feasibility of Florida entering the aquaculture catfish industry. Evaluation of base model results and sensitivity analysis were used to identify constraints to the potential expansion of the catfish industry in Florida. Results indicated production and processing costs were more important in determining the locus of production and processing than were processing capacity, storage costs and capacity, and transportation costs. Thus, existing industry geographic concentration is likely to continue, but small new processing plants could develop proximate markets for fresh product.

This study examined the psychometric properties of the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS; Zimet, Dahlem, Zimet, & Farley, 1988) with a diverse group of 154 students at an urban college. The following areas were investigated: internal reliability, factorial validity, social desirability bias, and the moderating effect of social support between stressful life events and depression (i.e., the buffering hypothesis). The MSPSS had good internal reliability, and the factor analysis confirmed the subscale structure of the measure: family, friends, and significant other. There was no indication that social desirability bias influenced subjects' responses. Finally, social support was related to depression only for those subjects who were experiencing high levels of life stress, which lends support for the buffering hypothesis.

Despite APA's virulent opposition to managed care, the reality is that with the forthcoming universal health coverage, managed care in some form is going to be central to whatever specific plan is adopted. The American Psychological Association has done the profession a great disservice by its unrelenting attacks on managed care. During the years that psychology could have played a role in shaping managed care, APA has sat on the sidelines simply carping at these new developments in the health care marketplace. Psychologists must recognize the reality of these changes and adapt to them, or we will find ourselves in the next 5 to 10 years in a health profession that time has passed by.
