Purpose of this study was to prepare chitosan/tamarind crosslinked poly (methacrylic acid) hydrogels for pH responsive delivery of cytarabine by using aqueous free radical polymerization technique. Polymers were chemically cross-linked with monomer (methacrylic acid) using methylene bisacrylamide as cross-linking agent and ammonium per sulphate as a reaction initiator in aqueous medium. Developed hydrogels were characterized for morphology, physical existence, drug loading (%), compositional and structural analysis, thermal behavior and stability, drug release analysis (pH 1.2 and pH 7.4), and in vivo release kinetics. pH sensitive behavior was established by observing swelling and release behavior at different pH values (1.2 and 7.4). Biocompatibility of network was evaluated through acute oral toxicity studies in rabbits. Results revealed that cytarabine was efficiently loaded in prepared hydrogels with an entrapment efficiency of 54.67%-108.59%. Highest swelling ratio of 38.67 was noticed at pH 7.4. Solar energy is a key sustainable energy resource, and materials with optimal properties are essential for efficient solar energy‐driven applications in photocatalysis. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are excellent platforms to generate different nanocomposites comprising metals, oxides, chalcogenides, phosphides, or carbides embedded in porous carbon matrix. These MOF derived nanocomposites offer symbiosis of properties like high crystallinities, inherited morphologies, controllable dimensions, and tunable textural properties. Particularly, adjustable energy band positions achieved by in situ tailored self/external doping and controllable surface functionalities make these nanocomposites promising photocatalysts. Despite some progress in this field, fundamental questions remain to be addressed to further understand the relationship between the structures, properties, and photocatalytic performance of nanocomposites. In this review, different synthesis approaches including self‐template and external‐template methods to produce MOF derived nanocomposites with various dimensions (0D, 1D, 2D, or 3D), morphologies, chemical compositions, energy bandgaps, and surface functionalities are comprehensively summarized and analyzed. The state‐of‐the‐art progress in the applications of MOF derived nanocomposites in photocatalytic water splitting for H2 generation, photodegradation of organic pollutants, and photocatalytic CO2 reduction are systemically reviewed. Synthesis and evaluation of in-vitro and in-silico anti-bacterial potential of a series of 4, 5-dihydro-1H-indazoles is reported here. The synthesis of the target 4,5-dihydro-1H-indazoles was accomplished by reacting 1,5-diaryl,4-acetyl cyclohexen-3-one with hydrazine hydrate and selected hydrazides. All the synthesized compounds were evaluated for their anti-bacterial potential against Escherichia coli, Proteus vulgaris, Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella typhimurium. Among the synthesized indazoles, N,N-dimethyl-4-(3-methyl-6-phenyl-4,5-dihydro-1H-indazol-4-yl)aniline and 3-methyl-4-(3-nitrophenyl)-1,6-diphenyl-4,5-dihydro-1H-indazole exhibited highest antimicrobial activity against Salmonella typhimurium i. e. MIC50= 3.85 and 4.12 mg/ml respectively. Docking studies were also carried out to provide an insight into binding interaction with the active site of respective enzyme.

This study was aimed at investigating the effect of pretreatment on product distribution of two-step catalytic pyrolysis of spirogyra. The treatment of fresh spirogyra, putrefied spirogyra, and microbe-treated spirogyra was carried out under moist conditions. The earth burial in anaerobic conditions and microbe treatment of spirogyra were performed for biological transformation of long-chain and macromolecular compounds into hydrogen-rich and carbon-rich compounds. In later stage, two-step pyrolysis of the samples was performed to reduce the amount of water and highly oxygenated compounds, and to produce efficient liquid and gaseous fuels. Both steps of pyrolysis were catalyzed by Portland cement. However, prior to second step of pyrolysis, the pyrolysate of each sample was separated into volatile combustible liquid and a paste like organic material. The organic paste was used as feedstock for second step of pyrolysis and converted into oil and highly combustible gas. The oil product was further analyzed using GC-FID and GC-MS techniques. The experimental results revealed that the enzymatic and microbial putrefaction of spirogyra would be helpful in upgrading the fuel quality and yield of the pyrolytic conversion. © 2017 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Environ Prog, 2017

Superconductivity in monolayer niobium diselenide (NbSe2) on bilayer graphene is studied by electrical transport. Monolayer NbSe2 is grown on bilayer graphene by molecular beam epitaxy and capped with a selenium film to avoid degradation in air. The selenium capped samples have TC = 1.9 K. In situ measurements down to 4 K in ultrahigh vacuum show that the effect of the selenium layer on the transport is negligible. The superconducting transition and upper critical fields in air exposed and selenium capped samples are compared. BACKGROUND Mycotoxin-contaminated feed is very dangerous for the growth and even life of poultry. The objective of the current study was to investigate the efficacy of ultra-violet irradiation for decontamination of ochratoxin A (OTA) in spiked and naturally contaminated poultry feed samples. Spiked and naturally contaminated feed samples were irradiated with ultra-violet light (UV) at distance of 25 cm over the feed samples. In vitro, the effect of UV intensity (0.1 mW cm−2 at 254 nm UV-C) on different types of poultry feeds contaminated with OTA was evaluated. The same samples were also irradiated with sunlight and analysed for OTA by an indirect enzyme linked immunosorbent assay method. RESULTS Poultry feed samples containing 500 µg kg−1 were 100% decontaminated in 180 min with UV radiation while OTA was decreased to 70–95 µg kg−1 using the same poultry feed samples after 8 h sunlight irradiation. Therefore, UV light was found to be more effective. Only 1 h of UV irradiation was found to be sufficient to bring the OTA level to the maximum regulatory limit suggested for poultry feeds (100 µg kg−1), while 8 h were needed to obtain this level using sunlight radiations. CONCLUSION The proposed approach is a viable option to reduce the level of OTA in contaminated poultry feeds. © 2015 Society of Chemical Industry

Background: Gabapentin has been introduced as an effective agent for post-operative pain control. This study aimed to test the effects of pre- and post-incision administration of different doses of gabapentin on post-operative morphine requirement and pain following lumbar laminectomy. Methods: In this randomized clinical trial, 175 patients were allocated into seven groups of 25 patients each to receive placebo or gabapentin 600, 900 or 1200 mg pre- or post-incision. Total patient-controlled intravenous morphine consumption during the first 24 post-operative hours, and the time to the first demand for morphine were recorded. Pain score at rest (visual analogue scale) was recorded every 30 min in the first 4 h and then every 2 h until 24 h post-operatively. Side-effects were observed. Results: In the first 12 h, morphine consumption was less, pain scores were lower and the time to the first demand for analgesia was longer in groups receiving gabapentin 900 or 1200 mg either pre- or post-incision, compared with placebo and gabapentin 600 mg (P

Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score based triage of influenza A H1N1 critically ill patients has been proposed for surge capacity management as a guide for clinical decision making. We conducted a retrospective records review and SOFA scoring of critically ill patients with influenza A H1N1 in a mixed medical-surgical intensive care unit in an urban hospital. Eight critically ill patients with influenza A H1N1 were admitted to the intensive care unit. Their mean (range) age was 39 (26-52) years with a length of stay of 11 (3-17) days. All patients met SOFA score based triage admission criteria with a modal SOFA score of five. Five patients required invasive ventilation for a mean (range) of 5 (4-11) days. Five patients would have been considered for withdrawal of treatment using SOFA scoring guidelines at 48 h. All patients survived. We conclude that SOFA score based triage could lead to withdrawal of life support in critically ill patients who could survive with an acceptably low length of stay in the intensive care unit.

In this paper, we present the results of a longitudinal case study on information systems (IS) implementation conducted in a community healthcare organization. Using structuration theory as a sensitizing framework, we highlight how the information technology (IT) Management improved their influence through gaining legitimation from other organizational stakeholders, and how the nature of this evolved over time. Our results highlight how an appropriate, sophisticated use of what Giddens refers to as the duality of structure contributed to the consolidation of the IT Manager's credibility and authority. We also report on how the IT Management had most of their actions legitimated as an integral element of their actions. The results also highlight the distributed nature of power, such that even those at the lower end of organizational hierarchy were able to influence the success or failure of IS implementation.

Background and Aims: Hepatitis A (HAV) is endemic in India and most of the population is infected asymptomatically in early childhood with lifelong immunity. Because of altered epidemiology and decreasing endemicity, the pattern of acute HAV infection is changing from asymptomatic childhood infection to an increased incidence of symptomatic disease in the 18-40 age group. The aims of the present study were to assess whether the proportion of adults with acute HAV infection has been increasing over the years and to analyze the seroprevalence of immunoglobulin G (IgG) anti-HAV antibodies in young adults above the age of 15 years as well as in cases of chronic liver disease. Methods: Sera collected from 3495 patients with acute (1932) and chronic (1563) liver disease attending the Medical Outpatient Department of Lok Nayak Hospital during the previous five years (1999-2003) were tested for various serological markers of acute (HBsAg, HBcIgM, anti-HCV, HEV-IgM, and HAV-IgM) and chronic (HBsAg, HBcIgG, HBeAg, and anti-HCV) hepatitis. In addition, 500 normal healthy attendants of the patients above the age of 15 years were tested for IgG anti-HAV as controls. Results: Of 1932 patients with acute viral hepatitis, 221 (11.4%) were positive for immunoglobulin M (IgM) anti-HAV. The patients who were IgM anti-HAV negative included hepatitis B (321 patients), C (39 patients), E (507 patients) and unclassified (844 patients). Although the frequency of HAV infection among children had increased (10.6% to 22.0%) in the 5-year period, the frequency of HAV infection among adults had also increased (3.4% to 12.3%) during the same period. A total of 300 patients with chronic liver diseases that were etiologically related to hepatitis B (169), C (73) or dual infection (10) and alcoholic liver injury (48) were tested for the presence of IgG anti-HAV antibody; 98% (294/300) were positive for the antibody. Conclusions: Although universal vaccination against HAV is not currently indicated, selective vaccination of the high-risk population, based on their serological evidence of HAV antibody, would be a rational and cost-effective approach.

Using high resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we systematically investigate the electronic structure of T-d-WTe2, which has attracted substantial research attention due to its diverse and fascinating properties, especially the predicted type-II topological Weyl semimetal (TWS) phase. The observed significant lattice contraction and the fact that our ARPES measurements are well reproduced by our ab initio calculations under reduced lattice constants support the theoretical prediction of a type-II TWS phase in T-d-WTe2 at temperatures below 10K. We also investigate the evolution of the electronic structure of T-d-WTe2 and realize two-stage Lifshitz transitions induced by temperature regulation and surface modification, respectively. Our results not only shed light on the understanding of the electronic structure of T-d-WTe2, but also provide a promising method to manipulate the electronic structures and physical properties of the type-II TWS T-d-XTe2.

Background Postoperative ileus (POI) is a transient gastrointestinal (GI) dysmotility that commonly develops after abdominal surgery. YH12852, a novel, potent and highly selective 5-hydroxytryptamine 4 (5-HT4 ) receptor agonist, has been shown to improve both upper and lower GI motility in various animal studies and may have applications for the treatment of POI. Here, we investigated the effects and mechanism of action of YH12852 in a guinea pig model of POI to explore its therapeutic potential. Methods The guinea pig model of POI was created by laparotomy, evisceration, and gentle manipulation of the cecum for 60 seconds, followed by closure with sutures under anesthesia. Group 1 received an oral administration of vehicle or YH12852 (1, 3, 10 or 30 mg/kg) only, while POI Group 2 was intraperitoneally pretreated with vehicle or 5-HT4 receptor antagonist GR113808 (10 mg/kg) prior to oral dosing of vehicle or YH12852 (3 or 10 mg/kg). Upper GI transit was evaluated by assessing the migration of a charcoal mixture in the small intestine, while lower GI transit was assessed via measurement of fecal pellet output (FPO). Key results YH12852 significantly accelerated upper and lower GI transit at the doses of 3, 10, and 30 mg/kg and reached its maximal effect at 10 mg/kg. These effects were significantly blocked by pretreatment of GR113808 10 mg/kg. Conclusion and inferences Oral administration of YH12852 significantly accelerates and restores delayed upper and lower GI transit in a guinea pig model of POI. This drug may serve as a useful candidate for the treatment of postoperative ileus.

Background Methane has been associated with constipation-predominant irritable bowel syndrome, slowing intestinal transit time by augmenting contractile activity. However, the precise mechanism underlying this effect remains unclear. Therefore, we investigated the mechanisms underlying the effect of methane on contractile activity, and whether such effects are mediated by nerve impulses or muscular contraction. Methods We connected guinea pig ileal muscle strips to a force/tension transducer and measured amplitudes of contraction in response to electrical field stimulation (EFS; 1, 2, 8, 16 Hz) following methane infusion in the presence of tetradotoxin (TTX), atropine, guanethidine, or GR 113808. We then performed calcium imaging using Oregon Green 488 BAPTA-1 AM in order to visualize changes in calcium fluorescence in response to EFS following methane infusion in the presence of TTX, atropine, or a high K+ solution.
