Ciliated muconodular papillary tumor/bronchiolar adenoma (CMPT/BA) is a benign tumor with a high frequency of BRAF or EGFR mutations. It remains unclear whether CMPT/BA is associated with a specific type of lung cancer. Thus, we studied the clinicopathological and genetic characteristics of cases with coexisting CMPT/BA and primary lung cancer to explore this relationship. Among 1945 patients with resected stage 0-III primary lung cancer between 2015–2018, we identified eight patients with concurrent CMPT/BA (lung cancer associated with CMPT/BA; LCCM). We compared the gene mutation status of each lesion according to the target sequence using macro-dissected formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded specimens. Whole-exon sequencing (WES) was performed for six lung cancer cases. The LCCM cohort was male-dominant (male:female = 6:2); the median age was 72 years (range 66–81); and most were smokers (six smokers). The most common histological type corresponding to LCCM was adenocarcinoma; however, two squamous cell carcinomas and one small cell carcinoma were also detected. CMPT/BA lesions in LCCM showed a median size of 0.5 cm (range 0.3–1.1). The mutational test revealed no shared mutations between CMPT/BA and lung cancer, except for one invasive mucinous adenocarcinoma (IMA) harboring an HRAS mutation (I46N, c.137T > A). HRAS (I46N) is a rare variant, and all tumors showed an approximately 50% variant allele frequency, suggesting a single nucleotide polymorphism. Other driver gene alterations in lung cancer included EGFR (InDel, n = 2), BRAF (V600E) (n = 1), KRAS (n = 2), GNAS (n = 1), and TP53 (n = 2) mutations. BRAF (V600E) was the most frequent mutation in CMPT/BA. In contrast, lung cancer showed no specific trend in driver gene mutations. In conclusion, our study revealed differences in the gene mutation profiles of CMPT/BA and lung cancer in coexisting cases, suggesting a mostly independent tumorigenesis of CMPT/BA from lung cancer, except for one IMA with a rare HRAS SNV.

Although adjuvant tegafur/uracil (UFT) is recommended for patients with completely resected stage I non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in Japan, only one-third of cases has received adjuvant chemotherapy according to real-world data. Therefore, robust predictive biomarkers for selecting adjuvant chemotherapy (ADJ) or observation (OBS) without ADJ are needed. Patients who underwent complete resection of stage I lung adenocarcinoma with or without adjuvant UFT were enrolled. The status of ACTN4 gene amplification was analyzed by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). Statistical analyses to determine whether the status of ACTN4 gene amplification affected recurrence-free survival (RFS) were performed. Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) samples from 1,136 lung adenocarcinomas were submitted for analysis of ACTN4 gene amplification. Ninety-nine (8.9%) of 1114 cases were positive for ACTN4 gene amplification. In the subgroup analysis of patients ≥ 65 years, the ADJ group had better RFS than the OBS group in the ACTN4-positive cohort (HR: 0.084, 95% CI: 0.009, 0.806; P = 0.032). The difference in RFS between the ADJ group and the OBS group was not significant in ACTN4-negative cases (all ages, HR: 1.214, 95% CI: 0.848, 1.738; P = 0.289). Analyses of ACTN4 gene amplification contributed to the decision regarding postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy for stage I lung adenocarcinomas, preventing recurrence, improving the quality of medical care, preventing the unnecessary side effects of adjuvant chemotherapy, and saving medical costs.

Ferroelectric spin crossover (SCO) behavior is demonstrated to occur in the cobalt(II) complex, [Co(FPh-terpy)2 ](BPh4 )2 ⋅3ac (1⋅3 ac; FPh-terpy=4'-((3-fluorophenyl)ethynyl)-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine) and is dependent on the degree of 180° flip-flop motion of the ligand's polar fluorophenyl ring. Single crystal X-ray structures at several temperatures confirmed the flip-flop motion of fluorobenzene ring and also gave evidence for the SCO behavior with the latter behavior also confirmed by magnetic susceptibility measurements. The molecular motion of the fluorobenzene ring was also revealed using solid-state 19 F NMR spectroscopy. Thus the SCO behavior is accompanied by the flip-flop motion of the fluorobenzene ring, leading to destabilization of the low spin cobalt(II) state; with the magnitude of rotation able to be controlled by an electric field. This first example of spin-state conversion being dependent on the molecular motion of a ligand-appended fluorobenzene ring in a SCO cobalt(II) compound provides new insight for the design of a new category of molecule-based magnetoelectric materials.

Proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) of metal complexes has been widely studied, especially in biochemistry and catalytic chemistry. Although metal complexes bearing redox-active ligands play a part in these research areas, those with π-planar structure remain entirely unexplored, which are vital for future development of iono-electronics. Here, proton-electron coupling of a π-planar nickel complex bearing redox-active N, S-ligands, Ni(itsq)2, was investigated by combining experimental and theoretical approaches. Strong proton-electron coupling was manifested in a large potential shift, which is twice greater than that of a typical PCET-type π-planar metal complex with redox-inactive ligands, [Ni(dcpdt)₂]²⁻. Theoretical calculations affirmed that the stabilization of frontier orbitals by protonation is greater in Ni(itsq)2 than that in [Ni(dcpdt)₂]²⁻. These results indicate that π-planar metal complexes with redox-active ligands are promising for developing novel PCET-type materials.

Most molecules in confined spaces show markedly different behaviors from those in the bulk. Large pores are composed of two regions: an interface region in which liquids interact with the pore surface, and a core region in which liquids behave as bulk. The realization of a highly mobile ionic liquid (IL) in a mesoporous metal-organic framework (MOF) is now reported. The hybrid shows a high room-temperature conductivity (4.4×10-3 S cm-1 ) and low activation energy (0.20 eV); both not only are among the best values reported for IL-incorporated MOFs but also are classified as a superionic conductor. In this study, we obtained the first cation radical solid of a highly symmetric (D6h) polyaromatic hydrocarbon, coronene, by electrooxidation. The (coronene)3Mo6Cl14 salt, which is formed with an Oh-symmetric molybdenum cluster unit Mo6Cl142–, has an isotropic cubic structure with Pmm symmetry. The presence of two orientations for the coronene molecules related by an in-plane 90° rotation (merohedral disorder) allows for fourfold symmetry along the direction. The disorder has dynamic features because 2H NMR spectroscopic studies revealed that the coronene molecules undergo an in-plane flipping motion. The observation of two motional sites with significantly different rotational rates (300 Hz and 5 MHz at 103 K) in an approximate 2:1 ratio appears to be consistent with the splitting of a Raman-active A1g mode, confirming a random charge-disproportionated state instead of a uniform partially-charged state. The slower- and faster-rotating species are assigned to charge-rich and charge-poor coronenes, respectively, with respect to C–H···Cl hydrogen bonds with neighboring Mo6Cl142– cluster units. The electrical conductivity of the salt is rather high but is well-described by a three-dimensional (3D) variable-range hopping mechanism, which is possibly associated with the random charge disproportionation. These results provide a significant step forward in developing an isotropic 3D π-conducting system composed of planar π-conjugated molecules.

Highlights • We generated pyrrole–imidazole (PI) polyamides that could bind to an E-box motif. • PI polyamide Myc-6 induces G1 arrest and apoptosis in human osteosarcoma MG63 cells. • Myc-6 represses tumor growth both in vitro and in vivo. • Myc-6 binds to the 5′-upstream region of noncoding RNA MALAT1 and reduces its expression. • Myc-6 exerts its tumor-suppressive ability through the down-regulation of MALAT1., Gene amplification and/or overexpression of the transcription factor c-MYC, which binds to the E-box sequence (5′-CACGTG-3′), has been observed in many human tumors. In this study, we have designed 5 pyrrole–imidazole (PI) polyamides recognizing E-box, and found that, among them, Myc-6 significantly suppresses malignant phenotypes of human osteosarcoma MG63 cells both in vitro and in vivo. Intriguingly, knockdown of the putative Myc-6 target MALAT1 encoding long noncoding RNA remarkably impaired cell growth of MG63 cells. Collectively, our present findings strongly suggest that Myc-6 exerts its tumor-suppressive ability at least in part through the specific down-regulation of MALAT1.

Background Sixteen sacral chordoma surgeries performed at a single institution during the 1983–2008 period were retrospectively studied. Our aim is to assess surgical treatment and long-term outcomes. Methods Fifteen patients underwent primary wide excision, and one intralesional excision using ethanol for local control and radiation therapy (RT). A combined anteroposterior approach for large tumors above S2, and wide excision was performed with the modified threadwire-saw (MT-saw) after 1997. Results Fourteen of the 15 patients had wide margins, one a wide margin with contamination. The MT-saw was facilitated sacral excision with wide margins. Eleven patients are alive for 5–28 years. Five patients died before 10 years, two patients experienced sepsis, and one of another disease. Two patients died of local recurrence (LR) and another of multiple metastases after intralesional excision and wide excision with contamination, respectively. Protonated species of the nucleobase cytosine (C), namely the monoprotonated CH(+) and the hemiprotonated CHC(+), were used to obtain four charge-transfer complexes of [Ni(dmit)2] (dmit: 1,3-dithiole-2-thione-4,5-dithiolate). Diffusion methods afforded two semiconducting [Ni(dmit)2](-) salts; (CH)[Ni(dmit)2](CH3CN) (1) and (CHC)[Ni(dmit)2] (2). In salt 1, the [Ni(dmit)2](-) ions with a S = 1/2 spin construct a uniform one-dimensional array along the molecular long axis, and the significant intermolecular interaction along the face-to-face direction results in a spin-singlet ground state. In contrast, salt 2 exhibits the Mott insulating behavior associated with uniform 1D arrays of [Ni(dmit)2](-), which assemble a two-dimensional layer that is sandwiched between the layers of hydrogen-bonded CHC(+) ribbons. Multiple hydrogen bonds between CHC(+) and [Ni(dmit)2](-) seem to result in the absence of structural phase transition down to 0.5 K. Electrooxidation of [Ni(dmit)2](-) afforded the polymorphs of the [Ni(dmit)2](0.5-) salts, (CHC(+))[{Ni(dmit)2}(0.5-)]2 (3 and 4), which are the first mixed-valence salts of nucleobase cations with metal complex anions. Similar to 2, salt 3 contains CHC(+) ribbons that are sandwiched between the 2D [Ni(dmit)2](0.5-) layers. In the layer, the [Ni(dmit)2](0.5-) ions form dimers with a S = 1/2 spin and the narrow electronic bandwidth causes a semiconducting behavior. In salt 4, the CHC(+) units form an unprecedented corrugated 2D sheet, which is sandwiched between the 2D [Ni(dmit)2](0.5-) layers that involve ring-over-atom and spanning overlaps. In contrast to 3, salt 4 exhibits metallic behavior down to 1.8 K, associated with a wide bandwidth and a 2D Fermi surface. The ability of hydrogen-bonded CHC(+) sheets as a template for the anion radical arrangements is demonstrated.

Ten types of neutral charge transfer (CT) complexes of coronene (electron donor; D) were obtained with various electron acceptors (A). In addition to the reported 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) complex of 1:1 stoichiometry with a DA-type alternating π column, TCNQ also afforded a 3:1 complex, in which a face-to-face dimer of parallel coronenes (Cor-As) is sandwiched between TCNQs to construct a DDA-type alternating π column flanked by another coronene (Cor-B). Whereas solid-state (2)H NMR spectra of the 1:1 TCNQ complex formed with deuterated coronene confirmed the single in-plane 6-fold flipping motion of the coronenes, two unsynchronized motions were confirmed for the 3:1 TCNQ complex, which is consistent with a crystallographic study. Neutral [Ni(mnt)2] (mnt: maleonitriledithiolate) as an electron acceptor afforded a 5:2 complex with a DDA-type alternating π column flanked by another coronene, similar to the 3:1 TCNQ complex. The fact that the Cor-As in the [Ni(mnt)2] complex arrange in a non-parallel fashion must cause the fast in-plane rotation of Cor-A relative to that of Cor-B. This is in sharp contrast to the 3:1 TCNQ complex, in which the dimer of parallel Cor-As shows inter-column interactions with neighboring Cor-As. The solid-state (1)H NMR signal of the [Ni(mnt)2] complex suddenly broadens at temperatures below approximately 60 K, indicating that the in-plane rotation of the coronenes undergoes down to approximately 60 K; the rotational rate reaches the gigahertz regime at room temperature. Rotational barriers of these CT complexes, as estimated from variable-temperature spin-lattice relaxation time (T1) experiments, are significantly lower than that of pristine coronene. The investigated structure-property relationships indicate that the complexation not only facilitates the molecular rotation of coronenes but also provides a new solid-state rotor system that involves unsynchronized plural rotators.

Epigenetic changes can lead to abnormal expression of genes in cancer, and several genes have been reported to have aberrant promoter DNA methylation in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). We identified aberrantly methylated genes in NSCLC by combination of in silico and experimental approaches. We first applied bioinformatics, and from microarray datasets, we selected genes with low expression and having functions related to cancer. Next, combined bisulfite restriction analysis was carried out in 10 pooled resected lung cancer tissues to screen for genes that were aberrantly methylated, and the methylation ratio (the fraction of methylated DNA in extracted DNA from a cancer tissue sample) was quantified using quantitative analysis of methylated alleles. We identified 8 methylated genes (ARPC1B, DNAH9, FLRT2, G0S2, IRS2, PKP1, SPOCK1 and UCHL1) previously unreported in NSCLC. Analyses of methylation profiles of 101 resected lung cancer tissue samples revealed quantitatively low methylation in whole, methylation ratios were almost less than 30% even in the methylated samples, and no significant correlation to prognosis after 2 years of follow-up using hierarchical clustering. DNA methylation of G0S2 gene was significantly more frequent in squamous lung cancer (n = 18, mean of methylation ratios: 15%) compared with nonsquamous lung cancer (n = 83, mean of methylation ratios: 2.6%) (Mann-Whitney U test, p < 0.001). DNA methylation of G0S2 can be an important biomarker for squamous lung cancer.

As broadband Internet access channels such as ADSL and FTTH become more widely used, network compression by power users becomes a problem. In order to deal with this problem, bandwidth control that assigns bandwidth among users in a fair manner is needed. In this paper, we studied the DRR method, which is known to allow fair bandwidth allocation and to be highly realizable. A new method that resolves the problem of realizability at high speeds in the range of gigabits and tens of gigabits typical of the DRR method is proposed. By this method, it is possible to realize fair allocation of bandwidth even if the channel speed is increased to several gigabits or several tens of gigabits. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A method for the synthesis of the multicomponent ionic complexes: [Cr(I)(C(6)H(6))(2) (.+)][Co(II)(tpp)(fullerene)(-)].C(6)H(4)Cl(2), comprising bis(benzene)chromium (Cr(C(6)H(6))(2)), cobalt(II) tetraphenylporphyrin (Co(II)(tpp)), fullerenes (C(60), C(60)(CN)(2), and C(70)), and o-dichlorobenzene (C(6)H(4)Cl(2)) has been developed. The monoanionic state of the fullerenes has been proved by optical absorption spectra in the UV/vis/NIR and IR ranges. The crystal structures of the ionic [[Cr(I)(C(6)H(6))(2)](.+)](1.7)[[Co(II)(tpp)(C(60))](2)](1.7-). 3.3 C(6)H(4)Cl(2) and [[Cr(I)(C(6)H(6))(2)] (.+)](2)[Co(II)(tpp)[C(60)(CN)(2)]](-)[C(60)(CN)(2) (.-)]).3 C(6)H(4)Cl(2) are presented. The essentially shortened Co.C(fullerene) bond lengths of 2.28-2.32 A in these complexes indicate the formation of sigma-bonded [Co(II)(tpp)][fullerene](-) anions, which are diamagnetic. All the ionic complexes are semiconductors with room temperature conductivity of 2 x 10(-3)-4 x 10(-6) S cm(-1), and their magnetic susceptibilities show Curie-Weiss behavior. The neutral complexes of Co(II)(tpp) with C(60), C(60)(CN)(2), C(70), and Cr(0)(C(6)H(6))(2), as well as the crystal structures of [Co(II)(tpp)](C(60)).2.5 C(6)H(4)Cl(2), [Co(II)(tpp)](C(70)). 1.3 CHCl(3).0.2 C(6)H(6), and [Cr(0)(C(6)H(6))(2)][Co(II)(tpp)] are discussed. In contrast to the ionic complexes, the neutral ones have essentially longer Co.C(fullerene) bond lengths of 2.69-2.75 A.

This paper discusses a low-power-consumption architecture for the processor based on object code compression, especially the application of the idea to embedded processors. In the proposed method, duplicated instructions are unified to compress the program. An instruction decompression circuit is added, which reorganizes the object code from the pseudocode generated by the compression. The instruction decompression circuit and the processor are integrated into a single chip, which helps to reduce the bandwidth needed in the interface to the external memory. Then, the power consumption is reduced greatly. As a result of experiments, when the proposed method is applied to the ARM610 32-bit RISC processor, the code is compressed by 62.5%. The power consumption in the instruction memory is reduced by 42.3%. We review the development of conductive organic molecular assemblies including organic metals, superconductors, single component conductors, conductive films, conductors with a switching function, and new spin state (quantum spin liquid state). We emphasize the importance of the ionicity phase diagram for a variety of charge transfer systems to provide a strategy for the development of functional organic solids (Mott insulator, semiconductor, superconductor, metal, complex isomer, neutral-ionic system, alignment of chemical potentials, etc.). For organic (super)conductors, the electronic dimensionality of the solids is a key parameter and can be designed based on the self-aggregation ability of a molecule. We present characteristic structural and physical properties of organic superconductors.

Quinoline-5,8-dione 5 reacted with 1-methylpyrrole in acetic acid to give 6- and 7-(1-methylpyrrol-2-yl)quinoline-5,8-diones, one of which (6-isomer) showed remarkable metallochromic behaviour. Selective synthesis of the 6-isomer from 5 was achieved by addition of metal salts.
