The aim of this study was to test the effectiveness, safety and stability of the 5G communication technology in clinical laparoscopic telesurgery.An ultra-remote radical cystectomy (network communication distance of nearly 3000 km) was performed on patient diagnosed with T2N0M0 stage bladder cancer using a domestically produced "MicroHand" surgical robot.The network delay, operative time, blood loss, intraoperative complications, postoperative recovery, and hospitalisation time were recorded. The 5G network was used throughout the operation, with an average total delay of 254 ms. The operation went well and the patient recovered smoothly.Ultra-remote clinical laparoscopic surgery can be performed safely and smoothly. More importantly, our model can provide insights for promoting the future development of telesurgery in China.

Background The most commonly used method of polyethylene glycol (PEG) precipitation for macroprolactinemia (MP) screening has some significant drawbacks. The aim of this study was to establish a new method using PEG for precipitation of macroprolactin (macroPRL) to detect genuine hyperprolactinemia (genuine HP). Methods The optimal PEG concentration for precipitation and the effect of PEG on the precipitation of PRL were analyzed to establish and optimize our PEG precipitation method. The PRL recovery rate and genuine HP detection rate were compared between our method and MP screening method. Results About 25% PEG6000 was determined to be the optimal PEG concentration for precipitation. Along with an increase in protein concentration in the PRL calibration solution, the PRL recovery rate after precipitation decreased gradually. The PRL recovery rate increased when the precipitation was carried out with diluted PRL calibration solution; the recovery rate reached greater than 90% after a 5-fold dilution of the calibration solution. The genuine HP detection rate and PRL recovery rate using our diluted serum PEG precipitation method were significantly higher than those obtained with the MP screening method. Our method successfully detected 31 cases of genuine HP, which was significantly higher than the detection rate obtained using the MP screening method (25 cases; P < 0.001). Conclusion Precipitation using 5-fold diluted serum with 25% PEG6000 can effectively reduce the macroPRL concentration, increasing the PRL recovery rate and detection rate of genuine HP after precipitation, which is an effective and convenient method for the detection of genuine HP.

Summary 1. Identifying the factors determining the success of invasive species is critical for management of biological invasions. Darwin’s naturalization conundrum states that exotic species closely related to natives should be successful because of a shared affinity for local environmental conditions, but at the same time close relatives often compete more intensively, limiting ‘niche’ opportunities for the invaders. Previous studies have generally considered these two ‘opposing’ hypotheses as mutually exclusive, yet evidence for both of them abounds, indicating a practical dilemma for management of biological invasions. 2. In this study, we sowed the seeds of the invasive exotic Ambrosia artemisiifolia L. into 369 experimental plant communities to mimic an introduction of the exotics into a series of new habitats. We further linked the establishment and growth performance of the invader in these experimental communities to the phylogenetic relatedness between the invader and the community residents where it was introduced. 3. We found that the probability of invader establishment declined with increasing phylogenetic distance between the invader and residents, whereas the average size of surviving invader individuals increased with the phylogenetic distance. 4. These results can be at least partly explained by the observations that close relatives tend to create similar soil microhabitat through harbouring similar soil enzymes (e.g. alkaline and acid phosphatases) benefiting invader establishment and that intense competitive interactions between the invader and its close relatives suppressed exotic growth. 5. Synthesis and applications. This study presents the first experimental evidence that phylogenetic relatedness has contrasting effects on different aspects of invader success, thus shedding light on the long-standing Darwin’s naturalization conundrum. Moreover, our findings also have important implications for management of plant invasions: for controlling invasive species characterized by high establishment probability, native species distantly related to the invasive species can be planted in sites surrounding the invasion foci, whereas the opposite seems to be true for controlling those characterized by large individual size.

Objective To explore the embryo development characteristics in Robertsonian translocations (RTs) in their preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) cycles. Method A total of 37 RT carrier couples underwent 41 blastomere PGD cycles from August 2005 to September 2008. The development of 272 embryos was analyzed in their PGD cycles. Result(s) At D3, there were 161 high-grade embryos, including 59 normal/balanced embryos and 102 abnormal embryos. There was no difference between the normal/balanced embryo group and the abnormal embryo group in terms of the high-grade embryo percentage (64.84% vs 56.35%, p = 0.179). However, at D5–D6, the blastocyst percentage in the normal/balanced embryo group was significantly higher than that in the abnormal embryo group (43.96% vs 20.44%, p = 0.000). Conclusion(s) Normal/balanced embryos developed better and a self-selective mechanism may exist in the RTs' embryos at the blastocyst formation stage. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
