Abstract Artificial intelligence (AI) literacy education for young students is gaining traction among researchers and educators. Researchers are developing courses and attempting to teach AI literacy to younger students, using age‐appropriate AI educational learning tools. Although teachers play a crucial role in AI literacy education, their perceptions and attitudes have received little attention. This study explores the perceptions of 60 teachers regarding the use of AI educational learning tools, and examines the factors influencing their attitudes in relation to implementing AI literacy education. The technological acceptance model and the technological, pedagogical, and content knowledge (CK) (TPACK) framework inform the research design, and a mixed method, combining the statistical package for Social Science and thematic analysis, is employed for data analysis. The study reveals that teachers have positive perceptions regarding the usefulness and ease of use of AI educational learning tools in their AI literacy teaching. This paper also reveals that teachers embrace an arts‐based approach to teaching AI literacy. The qualitative data reveal that teachers face challenges such as insufficient CK and experience with AI; and knowledge of TPACK. The five factors affecting their acceptance of AI educational learning tools are: (a) teachers' perceptions of their AI CK and experience in teaching AI literacy (technological content knowledge); (b) technical challenges and stakeholder acceptance; (c) the attributes of AI educational learning tools; (d) school infrastructure and budget constraints; and (e) potential for distraction and negative emotional responses. This study offers insights for policymakers regarding professional development initiatives and technical support mechanisms, thereby facilitating more effective AI literacy implementation.

ABSTRACT B cell maturation is crucial for effective adaptive immunity. It requires a complex signalling network to mediate antibody diversification through mutagenesis. B cells also rely on queues from other cells within the germinal centre. Recently, a novel class of intercellular signals mediated by extracellular vesicles (EVs) has emerged. Studies have shown that B cell EV‐mediated signalling is involved in immune response regulation and tumorigenesis. However, the mechanistic role of B cell EVs is not yet established. We herein study the biological properties and physiological function of B cell EVs during B cell maturation. We use emerging technologies to profile B cell EV surface marker signatures at the single particle level, molecular cargo and physiological roles in B cell maturation. EV ncRNA cargo, characterised by RNA‐seq, identified an EV‐mediated novel non‐coding RNA (ncRNA) regulatory network for B cell maturation. We show that a previously uncharacterised micro‐RNA (miR‐5099) in combination with a set of long ncRNA are carried within B cell EVs and could contribute to antibody diversification. The physiological role of EVs in B cell maturation is investigated using EV blockade assays and complementation studies using diverse EV sources further confirmed the physiological role and mode of action of EVs in B cell maturation.

Abstract Ferroelectric (FE) materials are key to advancing electronic devices owing to their non‐volatile properties, rapid state‐switching abilities, and low‐energy consumption. FE‐based devices are used in logic circuits, memory‐storage devices, sensors, and in‐memory computing. However, the primary challenge in advancing the practical applications of FE‐based memory is its reliability. To address this problem, a novel polarization pruning (PP) method is proposed. The PP is designed to eliminate weakly polarized domains by applying an opposite‐sign pulse immediately after a program or erase operation. Significant improvements in the reliability of ferroelectric devices are achieved by reducing the depolarization caused by weakly polarized domains and mitigating the fluctuations in the ferroelectric dipole. These enhancements include a 25% improvement in retention, a 50% reduction in read noise, a 45% decrease in threshold voltage variation, and a 72% improvement in linearity. The proposed PP method significantly improves the memory storage efficiency and performance of neuromorphic systems.

Abstract Baveno VII criteria (B7C) and Baveno VI criteria (B6C) have been widely used to estimate the risk of hepatic decompensation. However, the impact of age on these criteria warrants further investigation. The international, multicenter cohort study included 1138 patients with compensated cirrhosis (median follow‐up of 40.6 months), aiming to evaluate the value of age in predicting hepatic decompensation. We identified age as an independent predictor of hepatic decompensation, with 60 years determined as the optimal cut‐off value. The occurrence of decompensation was 18.7% and 6.7% in the older (age ≥60 years) and younger (age 0.05). In conclusion, our study demonstrated that integrating age into the Baveno criteria could enhance the assessment of hepatic decompensation. Age should be considered before discharging patients with compensated cirrhosis from the surveillance of hepatic decompensation.

Abstract While most nanomedicines primarily aim to stimulate the immune system against infections or tumors, there is a growing demand for inducing immune tolerance under certain conditions, such as allergic and autoimmune diseases. Researchers have explored nanotechnology‐based strategies to induce immune tolerance in a targeted and specific manner. One approach involves the use of nanoparticles (NPs) to encapsulate immunosuppressive drugs and/or antigens to educate naïve T cells and promote the generation of antigen‐specific regulatory T cells that inhibit immune responses. However, this approach has certain limitations. The hydrophobicity of proteins or peptides restricts the degree to which they can be encapsulated in NPs, which in turn, affects their loading efficiency and treatment efficacy. With the emergence of mRNA lipid nanoparticle (LNP) platforms, there is the possibility of overcoming the limitations of protein and peptide encapsulation. To date, mRNA LNP systems have been shown to provide organ, cellular, and subcellular targeting for the induction of immune tolerance. This method of drug delivery is flexible and scalable that can be customized for a specific patient, resulting in an effective means of administering relevant proteins or epitopes to induce antigen‐specific immune tolerance. With continued research and development, this technology could offer a safer and more effective alternative to current therapies, ultimately improving the quality of life of patients worldwide.

Abstract Background The tumoricidal complex alpha1‐oleate targets bladder cancer cells, triggering rapid, apoptosis‐like tumor cell death. Clinical effects of alpha1‐oleate were recently observed in patients with non‐muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC), using a randomized, placebo‐controlled study protocol. Aims To investigate if there are dose‐dependent effects of alpha1‐oleate. Materials and Methods Here, patients with NMIBC were treated by intravesical instillation of increasing concentrations of alpha1‐oleate (1.7, 8.5, or 17 mM) and the treatment response was defined relative to a placebo group. Results Strong, dose‐dependent anti‐tumor effects were detected in alpha1‐oleate treated patients for a combination of molecular and clinical indicators; a complete or partial response was detected in 88% of tumors treated with 8.5 mM compared to 47% of tumors treated with 1.7 mM of alpha1‐oleate. Uptake of alpha1‐oleate by the tumor triggered rapid shedding of tumor cells into the urine and cell death by an apoptosis‐like mechanism. RNA sequencing of tissue biopsies confirmed the activation of apoptotic cell death and strong inhibition of cancer gene networks, including bladder cancer related genes. Drug‐related side effects were not recorded, except for local irritation at the site of instillation. Discussion and Conclusions These dose‐dependent anti‐tumor effects of alpha1‐oleate are promising and support the potential of alpha1‐oleate treatment in patients with NMIBC.

Abstract The life cycle of genome builds spans interlocking pillars of assembly, annotation, and comparative genomics to drive biological insights. While tools exist to address each pillar separately, there is a growing need for tools to integrate different pillars of a genome project holistically. For example, comparative approaches can provide quality control of assembly or annotation; genome assembly, in turn, can help to identify artifacts that may complicate the interpretation of genome comparisons. The JCVI library is a versatile Python‐based library that offers a suite of tools that excel across these pillars. Featuring a modular design, the JCVI library provides high‐level utilities for tasks such as format parsing, graphics generation, and manipulation of genome assemblies and annotations. Supporting genomics algorithms like MCscan and ALLMAPS are widely employed in building genome releases, producing publication‐ready figures for quality assessment and evolutionary inference. Developed and maintained collaboratively, the JCVI library emphasizes quality and reusability.

Abstract Portable and personalized artificial intelligence (AI)‐driven sensors mimicking human olfactory and gustatory systems have immense potential for the large‐scale deployment and autonomous monitoring systems of Internet of Things (IoT) devices. In this study, an artificial Q‐grader comprising surface‐engineered zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films is developed as the artificial nose, tongue, and AI‐based statistical data analysis as the artificial brain for identifying both aroma and flavor chemicals in coffee beans. A poly(vinylidene fluoride‐co‐hexafluoropropylene)/ZnO thin film transistor (TFT)‐based liquid sensor is the artificial tongue, and an Au, Ag, or Pd nanoparticles/ZnO nanohybrid gas sensor is the artificial nose. In order to classify the flavor of coffee beans (acetic acid (sourness), ethyl butyrate and 2‐furanmethanol (sweetness), caffeine (bitterness)) and the origin of coffee beans (Papua New Guinea, Brazil, Ethiopia, and Colombia‐decaffeine), rational combination of TFT transfer and dynamic response curves capture the liquids and gases‐dependent electrical transport behavior and principal component analysis (PCA)‐assisted machine learning (ML) is implemented. A PCA‐assisted ML model distinguished the four target flavors with >92% prediction accuracy. ML‐based regression model predicts the flavor chemical concentrations with >99% accuracy. Also, the classification model successfully distinguished four different types of coffee‐bean with 100% accuracy.

Reinforcement learning (RL), exhibiting outstanding performance in various fields, requires large amounts of data for high performance. While exploration techniques address this requirement, conventional exploration methods have limitations: complexity of hardware implementation and significant hardware burden. Herein, in‐memory RL systems leveraging intrinsic 1/f noise of synaptic ferroelectric field‐effect‐transistors (FeFETs) for efficient exploration are proposed. The electrical characteristics of fabricated FeFETs with low‐power operation capability verify their suitability for neuromorphic systems. The proposed system achieves comparable performance to the conventional exploration method without additional circuits. The intrinsic 1/f noise of the FeFETs facilitates efficient exploration and offers significant advantages: efficiency in hardware implementation and simplicity in adjusting the 1/f noise level for optimal performance. This approach effectively addresses the challenges of conventional exploration methods. The operation mechanism of the exploration method utilizing the 1/f noise is systematically analyzed. The proposed in‐memory RL system demonstrates robustness and reliability to the device‐to‐device variation and the initial conductance distribution. This work provides further insights into the exploration methods of RL, paving the way for advanced in‐memory RL systems.

Abstract Introduction Kidney cancer is a common urological malignancy worldwide with an increasing incidence in recent years. Among all subtypes, renal cell carcinoma (RCC) represents the most predominant malignancy in kidney. Clinicians faced a major challenge to select the most effective and suitable treatment regime for patients from a wide range of modalities, despite improved understanding and diagnosis of RCC. Objective Recently, organoid culture gained more interest as the 3D model is shown to be highly patient specific which is hypothetically beneficial to the investigation of precision medicine. Nonetheless, the development and application of organotypic culture in RCC is still immature, therefore, the primary objective of this study was to establish an organoid model for RCC. Materials and Methods Patients diagnosed with renal tumor and underwent surgical intervention were recruited. RCC specimen was collected and derived into organoids. Derived organoids were validated by histological examminations, sequencing and xenograft. Drug response of organoids were compared with resistance cell line and patients' clinical outcomes. Results Our results demonstrated that organoids could be successfully derived from renal tumor and they exhibited high concordance in terms of immunoexpressional patterns. Sequencing results also depicted concordant mutations of driver genes in both organoids and parental tumor tissues. Critical and novel growth factors were discovered during the establishment of organoid model. Besides, organoids derived from renal tumor exhibited tumorigenic properties in vivo. In addition, organoids recapitulated patient's in vivo drug resistance and served as a platform to predict responsiveness of other therapeutic agents. Conclusion Our RCC organoid model recaptiluated histological and genetic features observed in primary tumors. It also served as a potential platform in drug screening for RCC patients, though future studies are necessary before translating the outcomes into clinical practices.

Abstract The senescence of aortic valve interstitial cells (VICs) plays a critical role in the progression of calcific aortic valve disease (CAVD). However, the precise mechanisms underlying the senescence of VICs remain unclear, demanding the identification of a novel target to mitigate this process. Previous studies have highlighted the anti‐aging potential of morusin. Thus, this study aimed to explore the therapeutic potential of morusin in CAVD. Cellular experiments reveal that morusin effectively suppresses cellular senescence and cause a shift toward osteogenic differentiation of VICs in vitro. Mechanistically, morusin activate the Nrf2‐mediated antiaging signaling pathway by downregulating CCND1 expression and aiding Keap1 degradation through Trim 25. This activation lead to the upregulated expression of antioxidant genes, thus reducing reactive oxygen species production and thereby preventing VIC osteogenic differentiation. In vivo experiments in ApoE−/− mice on a high‐fat Western diet demonstrate the positive effect of morusin in mitigating aortic valve calcification. These findings emphasize the antiaging properties of morusin and its potential as a therapeutic agent for CAVD.

Abstract Transboundary air pollution is one of the critical environmental problems in Southeast Asia; nevertheless the interaction between transboundary haze and local planetary boundary layer (PBL) remains unclear due to a lack of sufficient observations and sophisticated simulations. This study applied LiDAR observations and model simulations to comprehensively evaluate the interaction between transboundary haze and local PBL during a recent transboundary haze episode in Singapore in October 2023. Results show that upper‐level southeasterly wind, especially the nocturnal low‐level jet, created favorable conditions for aerosol transport when fire hotspot numbers increased in Indonesia. The rapid diurnal increase in PBL height facilitated the entrainment of upper‐level haze into the PBL, interacting with ground‐level aerosols through turbulent mixing. Model simulations further show the significant contributions of fire emissions to the transboundary haze episode in maritime Southeast Asia. The impacts extended toward the southern region of Peninsular Malaysia, driven by the persistent prevailing southeasterly wind.

Abstract Objective In‐office ablation of the posterior nasal nerve (PNN) has emerged as an effective treatment option for chronic rhinitis patients. This study explored questions patients commonly search online regarding this therapy and the quality of content available. Study Design A retrospective analysis of online search criteria and sources was performed with subsequent analysis of results. Setting Search and data acquisition was in September of 2023. Methods Most common search terms related to cryotherapy and radiofrequency neurolysis of the PNN were identified with associated People Also Ask (PAA) questions. Questions were categorized and organized into subtopics and sources evaluated using readability and quality metrics. Results A total of 255 unique PAA questions and 175 unique websites were identified. The most common subtopics were related to facts about chronic rhinitis (26.7%) and rhinitis treatment options (25.1%). Nearly a quarter (24.3%) of websites were from commercial sources. Quality metrics indicate difficult‐to‐read and low‐quality materials. Conclusion Existing online resources need improvement to provide patients material that is easier to read. Physicians counseling patients should be aware of these areas for adequate shared decision making.

Abstract The DNA damage response is essential for preserving genome integrity and eliminating damaged cells. Although cellular metabolism plays a central role in cell fate decision between proliferation, survival, or death, the metabolic response to DNA damage remains largely obscure. Here, this work shows that DNA damage induces fatty acid oxidation (FAO), which is required for DNA damage‐induced cell death. Mechanistically, FAO induction increases cellular acetyl‐CoA levels and promotes N‐alpha‐acetylation of caspase‐2, leading to cell death. Whereas chemotherapy increases FAO related genes through peroxisome proliferator‐activated receptor α (PPARα), accelerated hypoxia‐inducible factor‐1α stabilization by tumor cells in obese mice impedes the upregulation of FAO, which contributes to its chemoresistance. Finally, this work finds that improving FAO by PPARα activation ameliorates obesity‐driven chemoresistance and enhances the outcomes of chemotherapy in obese mice. These findings reveal the shift toward FAO induction is an important metabolic response to DNA damage and may provide effective therapeutic strategies for cancer patients with obesity.

Optical waveguides create interesting opportunities in the area of soft sensing and electronic skins due to their potential for high flexibility, quick response time, and compactness. The loss or change of light intensities inside a waveguide can be measured and converted into useful sensing feedback such as strain or shape sensing. Compared to other approaches such as those based on microelectromechanical system modules or flexible conductors, the entire sensor state can be characterized by fewer sensing nodes and less encumbering wiring, allowing greater scalability. Herein, simple light‐emitting diodes (LEDs) and photodetectors (PDs) combined with an intelligent shape decoding framework are utilized to enable 3D shape sensing of a self‐contained flexible substrate. Multiphysics finite element analysis is leveraged to optimize the PDs/LEDs layout and enrich ground‐truth data from sparse to dense points for model training. The mapping from light intensities to overall sensor shape is achieved with an autoregression‐based model that considers temporal continuity and spatial locality. Abstract Wave intensity analysis (WIA) uses simultaneous changes in pressure and flow velocity to determine wave energy, type, and timing of traveling waves in the circulation. In this study, we characterized wave propagation in the pulmonary artery in patients with pulmonary hypertension associated with left‐sided heart disease (PHLHD) and the effects of dobutamine. During right heart catheterization, pressure and velocity data were acquired using a dual‐tipped pressure and Doppler flow sensor wire (Combowire; Phillips Volcano), and processed offline using customized Matlab software (MathWorks). Patients with low cardiac output underwent dobutamine challenge. Twenty patients with PHLHD (all heart failure with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction) were studied. Right ventricular systole produced a forward compression wave (FCW), followed by a forward decompression wave (FDW) during diastole. Wave reflection manifesting as backward compression wave (BCW) following the FCW was observed in 14 patients. Compared to patients without BCW, patients with BCW had higher mean pulmonary artery pressure (28.7 ± 6.12 vs. 38.6 ± 6.5 mmHg, p = 0.005), and lower pulmonary arterial capacitance (PAC: 2.88 ± 1.75 vs. 1.73 ± 1.16, p = 0.002). Pulmonary vascular resistance was comparable. Mean pulmonary artery pressure of 34.5 mmHg (area under the curve [AUC]: 0.881) and PAC of 2.29 mL/mmHg (AUC: 0.833) predicted BCW. The magnitude of the FCW increased with dobutamine (n = 11) and correlated with pulmonary artery wedge pressure. Wave reflection in PHLHD is more likely at higher pulmonary artery pressures and lower PAC and the magnitude of reflected waves correlated with pulmonary artery wedge pressure. Dobutamine increased FCW but did not affect wave reflection.

Abstract Background Most extramedullary plasmacytomas (EMPs) aresolitary and located in the head and neck region. They may also occur in the visceral parts of the body. Objectives Here, we report a case of oral EMP followed by neoplastic plasma cell metastasis to both kidneys in a neutered male Pomeranian. Methods Oral plasmacytoma recurred 11 months aftersurgical removal of an oral mass and partial maxillectomy was performed. Eighteen months after partial maxillectomy, neoplastic masses were detected in both kidneys on computed tomography. The dog died 12 months after detection of bilateral kidney neoplasms. The resected neoplastic masses were routinely processed for histopathological observation and immunohistochemistry against pan‐cytokeratin, desmin, CD3, and MUM‐1. Results The recurred mass mainly consisted of well‐differentiated plasma cells and contained a small portion of aggressive cells with malignant features. Monoclonal gammopathy was not observed on serumelectrophoresis performed to exclude multiple myeloma. The mass was composed of plasma cells with high nuclear pleomorphism and abundant mitotic figures. The neoplasm stained positive for MUM‐1 with a more aggressive morphology than in oral EMP. Conclusion Based on serum biomarker and pathological observations, a diagnosis of recurrence and metastasis of oral‐to‐renal EMP was established. To the best of our knowledge, metastasis of oral EMP into the bilateral kidneys, as described in the current case, has not been previously reported in dogs.

Abstract In December 2021, Super Typhoon Rai caused significant devastation to the South Philippines and East Malaysia. In the meantime, an unprecedented flood event occurred in Peninsular Malaysia at 2,000 km west of the typhoon's path, causing comparable socioeconomic impacts as Rai. Record‐breaking 3‐day precipitation was received by Peninsular Malaysia during 16–18 December. Based on the storm tracking results, this study identified two mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) that were directly responsible for the flooding. The two MCSs were directly initiated by a tropical depression and sustained by an elongated easterly water vapor corridor originating from the Super Typhoon Rai. The return period and joint frequency analysis of key drivers indicate that the 3‐day downpour was more severe than a “once‐in‐a‐century” event. Historical records suggest such anomalous moisture channel has become more frequent in Southeast Asia, which alarms heightened attention in forecasting winter flood.

Abstract Background Metabolic (dysfunction)‐associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) emphasizes the metabolic dysfunction in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Although the relationship between low muscle mass and NAFLD has been suggested, the effect of MAFLD on low muscle mass is yet to be investigated. In this study, we examined the relationship between MAFLD and low muscle mass in an asymptomatic Korean population. Methods Examinees who underwent FibroScan® and bioelectrical impedance analyses on the same day during the period of June 2017 to December 2019 were included. Hepatic steatosis was diagnosed using controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) with two cut‐off values of 248 and 294 dB/m. Low muscle mass was defined based on appendicular skeletal muscle mass/body weight (wt) or body mass index (BMI) ratios of two standard deviations below the sex‐specific mean for healthy young adults. Abstract The exogenous control of intracellular drug delivery has been shown to improve the overall efficacy of therapies by reducing nonspecific off‐target toxicity. However, achieving a precise on‐demand dosage of a drug in deep tissues with minimal damage is still a challenge. In this study, we report an electric‐pulse‐driven nanopore‐electroporation (nEP) system for the localized intracellular delivery of a model agent in deep tissues. Compared with conventional bulk electroporation, in vitro nEP achieved better transfection efficiency (>60%) with a high cell recovery rate (>95%) under a nontoxic low electroporation condition (40 V). Furthermore, in vivo nEP using a nanopore needle electrode with a side drug‐releasing compartment offered better control over the dosage release, time, and location of propidium iodide, which was used as a model agent for intracellular delivery. Abstract Understanding preferences of key stakeholders including patients, clinicians and policymakers can inform clinical practice, workforce and policy. It also allows health services to evaluate existing clinical practices, policies and procedures. This commentary aims to introduce medical radiation professionals to health preference research by describing commonly used preference methodologies, with a particular focus on discrete choice experiments. Relevant examples of health preference research will be highlighted to demonstrate the application of health preference research in medical radiation sciences.

Abstract Background In the euthyroid state, the risk of developing diabetes according to changes in thyroid‐stimulating hormone (TSH) levels remains controversial. Additionally, the correlation of various body indices affecting blood glucose levels according to changes in TSH levels over a certain period is not well known. Methods Patients who underwent health check‐ups twice at a 2 year interval at a tertiary university hospital between 2009 and 2018 were included. By dividing baseline TSH levels into quartiles (TSH_Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4), various variables were compared, and their changes after 2 years (∆TSH_Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4) were confirmed. Results Among 15 557 patients, the incidence of diabetes mellitus after 2 years was 2.4% (377/15 557 patients). There was no statistically significant difference in the incidence of diabetes according to TSH_Q (p = 0.243) or ∆TSH_Q (p = 0.131). Abstract 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have significant research interests in various novel applications due to their intriguing physicochemical properties. Notably, one of the 2D TMDs, SnS2, has superior chemiresistive sensing properties, including a planar crystal structure, a large surface‐to‐volume ratio, and a low electronic noise. However, the long‐term stability of SnS2 in humid conditions remains a critical shortcoming towards a significant degradation of sensitivity. Herein, it is demonstrated that the subsequent self‐assembly of zeolite imidazolate framework (ZIF‐8) can be achieved in situ growing on SnS2 nanoflakes as the homogeneous porous materials. ZIF‐8 layer on SnS2 allows the selective diffusion of target gas species, while effectively preventing the SnS2 from severe oxidative degradation. Molecular modeling such as molecular dynamic simulation and DFT calculation, further supports the mechanism of sensing stability and selectivity. From the results, the in situ grown ZIF‐8 porous membrane on 2D materials corroborates the generalizable strategy for durable and reliable high‐performance electronic applications of 2D materials.

Abstract We report a case of a 49 year old woman who developed biopsy‐proven xanthomas on her hands and arms after initiation of Mycophenolate mofetil therapy for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and subsequently went into remission upon cessation of the medication.

Abstract Recent studies have found that green hydrogen production and biomass utilization technologies can be combined to efficiently produce both hydrogen and value‐added chemicals using biomass as an electron and proton source. However, the majority of them have been limited to proof‐of‐concept demonstrations based on batch systems. Here the authors report the design of modular flow systems for the continuous depolymerization and valorization of lignin and low‐voltage hydrogen production. A redox‐active phosphomolybdic acid is used as a catalyst to depolymerize lignin with the production of aromatic compounds and extraction of electrons for hydrogen production. Individual processes for lignin depolymerization, byproduct separation, and hydrogen production with catalyst reactivation are modularized and integrated to perform the entire process in the serial flow. Consequently, this work enabled a one‐flow process from biomass conversion to hydrogen gas generation under a cyclic loop. In addition, the unique advantages of the fluidic system (i.e., effective mass and heat transfer) substantially improved the yield and efficiency, leading to hydrogen production at a higher current density (20.5 mA cm−2) at a lower voltage (1.5 V) without oxygen evolution. This sustainable eco‐chemical platform envisages scalable co‐production of valuable chemicals and green hydrogen for industrial purposes in an energy‐saving and safe manner.

Summary Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (formerly Lactobacillus plantarum) is a lactic acid bacteria species found on plants that is essential for many plant food fermentations. In this study, we investigated the intraspecific phenotypic and genetic diversity of 13 L. plantarum strains isolated from different plant foods, including fermented olives and tomatoes, cactus fruit, teff injera, wheat boza and wheat sourdough starter. We found that strains from the same or similar plant food types frequently exhibited similar carbohydrate metabolism and stress tolerance responses. The isolates from acidic, brine‐containing ferments (olives and tomatoes) were more resistant to MRS adjusted to pH 3.5 or containing 4% w/v NaCl, than those recovered from grain fermentations. Strains from fermented olives grew robustly on raffinose as the sole carbon source and were better able to grow in the presence of ethanol (8% v/v or sequential exposure of 8% (v/v) and then 12% (v/v) ethanol) than most isolates from other plant types and the reference strain NCIMB8826R. Cell free culture supernatants from the olive‐associated strains were also more effective at inhibiting growth of an olive spoilage strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Multi‐locus sequence typing and comparative genomics indicated that isolates from the same source tended to be genetically related. However, despite these similarities, other traits were highly variable between strains from the same plant source, including the capacity for biofilm formation and survival at pH 2 or 50°C. Genomic comparisons were unable to resolve strain differences, with the exception of the most phenotypically impaired and robust isolates, highlighting the importance of utilizing phenotypic studies to investigate differences between strains of L. plantarum. The findings show that L. plantarum is adapted for growth on specific plants or plant food types, but that intraspecific variation may be important for ecological fitness and strain coexistence within individual habitats.

Abstract Aims/Introduction Increased blood glucose or increased weight is often observed in patients who are prescribed sodium–glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i). The aim of this study was to determine in advance which patients, among those prescribed a SGLT2i, would be likely to have improved or worsened blood glucose levels and gain or loss of weight through the use of real‐world data‐based prescriptions. Materials and Methods After 3 months of dapagliflozin prescription, patients were divided into four groups: H(+)W(+) for improved glucose and weight loss; H(+)W(−) for improved blood glucose and weight gain; H(−)W(+) for worsened glucose and weight loss; and H(−)W(−) for worsened glucose and weight gain. Results The proportion of patients in the H(+)W(+) group was 53.5% (325/608 patients), H(+)W(−) was 19.7% (120/608), H(−)W(+) was 26.8% (114/608) and H(−)W(−) was 8.1% (49/608). Abstract This work demonstrates ionic liquid electrolyte‐inscribed sweat‐based dual electrolyte functioning supercapacitors capable of self‐charging through sweat electrolyte function under a non‐enzymatic route. The supercapacitor electrodes are fabricated from TREN (tris(2‐aminoethyl)amine), poly‐3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene, and a graphene oxide mixture with copper‐mediated chelate, and this polymer‐GO‐metal chelate film can produce excellent energy harvest/storage performance from a sweat and ionic liquid integrated electrolyte system. The fabricated device is specifically designed to reduce deterioration using a typical planar structure. In the presence of sweat with ionic liquid, the dual electrolyte mode supercapacitor exhibits a maximum areal capacitance of 3600 mF cm−2, and the energy density is 450 mWhcm−2, which is more than 100 times greater than that from previously reported supercapacitors. The supercapacitors were fabricated/attached directly to textile fabrics as well as ITO‐PET (Indium tin oxide (ITO)‐polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film to study their performance on the human body during exercise. The self‐charging performance with respect to sweat wetting time for the sweat@ionic liquid dual electrolyte showed that the supercapacitor performed well on both fabric and film. These devices exhibited good response for pH effect and biocompatibility, and as such present a promising multi‐functional energy system as a stable power source for next‐generation wearable smart electronics.

Abstract Objectives Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a disease with significant impacts at both a societal and personal level. There has been an increase in emphasis on patient‐centered care and patient outcomes, with value becoming a commonplace concept in health care systems. This review seeks to better define the value that endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) provides in the treatment of CRS. Data Sources PubMed literature review. Review Methods A review of published literature related to ESS and its effects on CRS patients from multiple perspectives (quality outcomes, patient satisfaction, cost‐effectiveness) was integrated and analyzed through the viewpoint of a value equation. Results ESS provides long‐term quality outcomes in both patient‐reported outcome measures (PROMs) as well as in objective metrics for patients refractory to medical therapy. The vast majority undergoing ESS are satisfied both in the short and long‐term with their decision to pursue surgery. Treatment of CRS with ESS is generally more cost‐effective than continued medical therapy (CMT), especially in refractory patients. Taken together, the combination of improved outcomes as well as patient satisfaction after ESS in relation to the costs of surgery provides significant quantifiable value to CRS patients. Conclusion ESS clearly provides value in the treatment of CRS. Understanding both quality and outcome metrics along with patient expectations and priorities will assist providers in generating a more personalized and value‐based approach to patients with CRS. Abstract The atmospheric scattering model includes two crucial parameters for dehazing: global atmospheric light and the transmission map. Most previous dehazing methods need to obtain these two parameters separately, which makes dehazing a difficult and ill‐posed problem. Here, a new unified function that includes both the crucial parameters for haze removal is proposed. Then the haze removal network, which now needs to learn only one function during training, is proposed. Image dehazing can be performed as a simple addition of the haze removal function with the input hazy image. Experimental results show that the proposed method gives better subjective results for indoor and outdoor synthesized images as well as natural images compared to previous state‐of‐the‐art methods. Quantitative evaluation results show that the proposed haze removal network gives improved objective results compared with the same previous methods.

Summary Background Stress‐induced emotional eating is a risk factor for overweight and obesity. Previous research proposes both the human serotonin transporter gene (5‐HTTLPR) and child's reactive temperament are promising candidates to help explain individual differences in stress‐induced emotional eating and weight. Understanding the association between specific genotypes, reactive temperament factors, and stress‐induced emotional eating may inform the development of personalized and effective treatment for children who may be at risk for overweight and obesity. Objective The current study explored the conditional indirect effect of genetic and environmental susceptibility (i.e., the interaction between 5‐HTTLPR and reactive temperament) on weight (as measured by percent body fat) mediated by stress‐induced emotional eating. Method One hundred and forty‐seven children (4 to 6 years old; 50.3% female; 22.4% Hispanic), along with their primary caregiver, completed laboratory tasks and questionnaires that assessed the child's reactive temperament, stress‐induced emotional eating, and percent body fat. Results The interaction between 5‐HTTLPR and impulsivity as well as with negative affectivity significantly predicted percent body fat. The interaction between 5‐HTTLPR and impulsivity as well as with negative affectivity significantly predicted both total calorie consumption and rate of total calorie consumption. However, the mediation aspect of this statistical model was not supported. Conclusions Child reactive temperament is an important indicator of how children approach eating when stressed. Mental health providers may consider prescribing strategies to reduce emotional eating among children with the SL variant and moderate to high impulsivity as well as children with the LL variant and high negative affectivity.

Abstract Clofarabine is active in refractory/relapsed acute myeloid leukemia (AML). In this phase 2 study, we treated 18‐ to 65‐year‐old AML patients refractory to first‐line 3 + 7 daunorubicin/cytarabine induction or relapsing after 3 + 7 induction and high‐dose cytarabine consolidation, with clofarabine (30 mg/m2/d, Days 1‐5), cytarabine (750 mg/m2/d, Days 1‐5), and mitoxantrone (12 mg/m2/d, Days 3‐5) (CLAM). Patients achieving remission received up to two consolidation cycles of 50% CLAM, with eligible cases bridged to allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo‐HSCT). The mutational profile of a 69‐gene panel was evaluated. Twenty‐six men and 26 women at a median age of 46 (22‐65) years were treated. The overall response rate after the first cycle of CLAM was 90.4% (complete remission, CR: 69.2%; CR with incomplete hematologic recovery, CRi: 21.2%). Twenty‐two CR/CRi patients underwent allo‐HSCT. The 2‐year overall survival (OS), relapse‐free survival (RFS), and event‐free survival (EFS) were 65.8%, 45.7%, and 40.2%, respectively. Abstract Sepsis is a devastating disease with high morbidity and mortality and no specific treatments. The pathophysiology of sepsis involves a hyperinflammatory response and release of damage‐associated molecular patterns (DAMPs), including adenosine triphosphate (ATP), from activated and dying cells. Purinergic receptors activated by ATP have gained attention for their roles in sepsis, which can be pro‐ or anti‐inflammatory depending on the context. Current data regarding the role of ATP‐specific purinergic receptor P2X7 (P2X7R) in vascular function and inflammation during sepsis are conflicting, and its role on the endothelium has not been well characterized. In this study, we hypothesized that the P2X7R antagonist AZ 10606120 (AZ106) would prevent endothelial dysfunction during sepsis. As proof of concept, we first demonstrated the ability of AZ106 (10 µM) to prevent endothelial dysfunction in intact rat aorta in response to IL‐1β, an inflammatory mediator upregulated during sepsis. Likewise, blocking P2X7R with AZ106 (10 µg/g) reduced the impairment of endothelial‐dependent relaxation in mice subjected to intraperitoneal injection of cecal slurry (CS), a model of polymicrobial sepsis. However, contrary to our hypothesis, AZ106 did not improve microvascular permeability or injury, lung apoptosis, or illness severity in mice subjected to CS. Instead, AZ106 elevated spleen bacterial burden and circulating inflammatory markers. In conclusion, antagonism of P2X7R signaling during sepsis appears to disrupt the balance between its roles in inflammatory, antimicrobial, and vascular function.
