Global pincer is a relatively rare form of pincer deformity and is typically associated with technical challenges during surgery. So far, controversy remains whether patients with global pincer have equivalent surgical outcomes compared to patients with focal pincer. This study compares the clinical outcomes of arthroscopic treatment between patients with global pincer femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) and focal pincer FAI in the Chinese population.Data were retrospectively collected from patients with global and focal pincer FAI who underwent hip arthroscopy with a minimum two-year follow-up between April 2016 and December 2018. Radiographic measurements, arthroscopic procedures, preoperative and postoperative patient-reported outcomes (PROs) including modified Harris hip score (mHHS), hip outcome score-activities of daily living (HOS-ADL), international hip outcome tool-12 (iHOT-12), and visual analogue scale (VAS) scores, rates of revision surgery and conversion to total hip arthroplasty (THA) were recorded. Achievement of minimal clinically important difference (MCID) and patient acceptable symptomatic state (PASS) was compared for the VAS, mHHS, HOS-ADL, and iHOT-12 scores between groups.The total of 33 and 167 patients were included in the global and focal group, respectively. There were no intergroup differences in age, gender, body mass index or follow-up times. Lateral center-edge angle (LCEA) was reduced in both groups postoperatively. Both groups demonstrated significant improvements in PROs compared with preoperative levels at the final follow-up. The preoperative scores showed significant differences in terms of mHHS (60.34 vs 62.90, P = 0.031) and HOS-ADL (61.45 vs 64.74, P = 0.022) scores between two groups, and the improvement of HOS-ADL score was significantly higher in global group (P = 0.027). However, the postoperative scores, including VAS, mHHS, HOS-ADL, and iHOT-12 scores, showed no significant differences between two groups. And there were no significant differences in the rate of meeting the PASS and MCID between groups. One (3.0%) in the global group and six (3.6%) patients in the focal group underwent revision arthroscopy respectively, with no significant difference (P = 0.876). There were no conversions to THA in both groups.Arthroscopic management of global pincer FAI can achieve excellent functional scores at minimum 2-year follow-up. The outcomes were similar to focal pincer FAI patients with a low rate of secondary procedure.

Comorbidities such as hypertension could exacerbate symptoms of coronaviral disease 2019 (COVID)-19 infection. Patients with hypertension may receive both anti-COVID-19 and antihypertension therapies when infected with COVID-19. However, it is not clear how different classes of anti-hypertension drugs impact the outcome of COVID-19 treatment. Herein, we explore the association between the inpatient use of different classes of anti-hypertension drugs and mortality among patients with hypertension hospitalized with COVID-19. We totally collected data from 278 patients with hypertension diagnosed with COVID-19 admitted to hospitals in Wuhan from February 1 to April 1, 2020. A retrospective study was conducted and single-cell RNA-sequencing (RNA-Seq) analysis of treatment-related genes was performed. The results showed that Angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) and calcium channel blocker (CCB) drugs significantly increased the survival rate but the use of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor/β-block/diuretic drugs did not affect the mortality caused by COVID-19. Based on the analysis of four public data sets of single-cell RNA-Seq on COVID-19 patients, we concluded that JUN, LST1 genes may play a role in the effect of ARB on COVID-19-related mortality, whereas CALM1 gene may contribute to the effect of CCB on COVID-19-related mortality. Our results provide guidance on the selection of antihypertension drugs for hypertensive patients infected with COVID-19.

We appreciate the comments from Chan et al. for our study, and have carefully responded to the comments of Chan et al. and are very grateful for their praise of our research. We agree that smoking might be a risk factor of the severity of COVID-19 as mentioned by Chan et al., but in our study, smoking was not so robust compared with our conclusion. Also, we strongly agreed with the opinion of Chan, et al. that COVID-19 patients with diabetes or other chronic diseases might worsen the situation of the disease. But these factors were out of the scope of our study and we had published other research on this topic related to diabetes. Because of the limited sample size and original medical records, our study could not cover many factors suggested as Chan, et al. Invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) is a major type of breast cancer. Ocular metastasis (OM) in IDC is rarely seen, but patients with OM often have a poor prognosis. Furthermore, OM is difficult to detect in the early stages by common imaging examinations. In the present study, we tried to figure out the risk factors of OM in IDC and evaluate their diagnostic values for early detection. There were 1192 IDC patients who were divided into two groups according to ocular metastasis involved in this study. Clinical parameters of those patients were used to detect differences. The binary logistic regression test was then used to determine the risk factors of OM in IDC. Furthermore, ROC curves of both single and combined risk factors were established to examine their diagnostic values. The incidence of axillary lymph node metastases was significantly higher in the OM group (p = 0.002). Higher carbohydrate antigen 153 (CA153), lower apolipoprotein A1 (ApoA1), and hemoglobin (Hb) were risk factors for OM in IDC (p, The study provided a new method in the preventive diagnosis of distant metastasis in breast cancer. Risk factors CA153, ApoA1, and Hb could be used in clinical practice to predict OM in patients with IDC.

Lung cancer is prone to metastasis to various organs. Although intraocular metastasis (IOM) occurs at a later stage than metastasis to other organs, it often adversely affects the quality of life and suggests a poor prognosis. In this study, we selected 1608 patients with lung cancer who had metastasis to at least one site and explored clinical differences between those with IOM and non‐IOM (NIOM). An independent t test and chi‐squared test were used to analyze the clinical features of the patients. The statistically significant parameters were analyzed by binary logistic regression to determine the risk factors for IOM. A receiver operating characteristic curve was constructed to assess their diagnostic value in IOM. The results showed that no significant differences were noted in age, gender, and pathological type between the IOM and NIOM groups. However, the IOM group had higher levels of alpha‐fetoprotein, carcinoembryonic antigen, cancer antigen (CA)‐125, CA‐153, cytokeratin fragment 19 (CYFRA 21‐1), and total prostate‐specific antigen, compared with the NIOM group. Binary logistic regression indicated that CA‐153 and CYFRA 21‐1 were risk factors for IOM in patients with MLC (P, Intraocular metastasis in patients with metastatic lung cancer.

Objective Neuroimaging studies have shown that patients with pain-related conditions have altered neuronal activity and structural functions. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether patients with classical trigeminal neuralgia (CTN) exhibit changes in corresponding neuronal activity via analysis of neuronal activity regional homogeneity (ReHo). Methods A total of 28 patients presenting with sore eyes (12 men and 16 women) were matched with 28 healthy controls (12 men and 16 women). All participants underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). This ReHo method was used to assess the consistency of changes in neural activity in various brain regions. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was applied to differentiate ReHo values of patients with CTN from ReHo values of healthy controls. Pearson's correlation analysis was applied to evaluate the correlation between ReHo values of different brain regions of patients with CTN and clinical manifestations. Results Compared with healthy controls, patients with CTN were found to have increased ReHo values in the inferior cerebellum bilaterally, right inferior temporal gyrus, right middle occipital gyrus, right fusiform gyrus, right superior frontal gyrus, and right precentral gyrus. ROC curve analysis of each brain region revealed near-perfect accuracy regarding the area under the curve. However, no correlation between ReHo values and clinical manifestations in patients with CTN was found. Conclusions CTN is associated with altered neuronal networks in different areas of the brain. ReHo values all possess different degrees of change, implying that CTN has a certain impact on cerebral function.

Background Neovascular glaucoma (NVG) can cause irreversible visual impairment and abnormal spontaneous changes in brain's visual system and other systems. There is little research on this aspect at present. However, amplitude of low‐frequency fluctuations (ALFFs) can be used as an rs‐fMRI analysis technique for testing changes in spontaneous brain activity patterns. Purpose The aim of this study was to probe the local characteristics of spontaneous brain activity in NVG patients and analyze their correlation with clinical behaviors. Methods Resting‐state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs‐fMRI) scans were obtained from eighteen patients with NVG (8 males, 10 females) and eighteen healthy controls (HCs; 8 males and 10 females) who were matched in age, gender, and education level. We evaluated spontaneous brain activity with the ALFF method. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to compare the average ALFF values for altered brain regions of NVG patients with those of HCs. Results Compared with HCs, NVG patients had lower ALFF values in the right cuneus, right middle occipital gyrus, left cingulate gyrus, right precuneus, and left medial frontal gyrus (p, The patients with NVG exhibited anomalous spontaneous activity in different brain regions; these abnormal variations in specific brain regions can be considered possible clinical indices of NVG.

Titanium (Ti) and its corresponding alloys have been widely applied in dental and orthopedic implants. Owing to abrasion and corrosion of implants in the unfavorable electrolytic aqueous environment of the host body, Ti ions could be released from implants and accumulated in local tissues. Recent studies have found that excessive Ti ions were toxic to osteoblasts in adjacent bone tissues and subsequently influenced long-term effects on implant prostheses. However, the potential molecular mechanisms underlying the damage to osteoblasts induced by Ti ions remained unclear. Hippo signaling has been confirmed to be involved in organ size and tissue regeneration in many organs, while its roles in osteoblasts differentiation and bone repair remained elusive. Therefore, we hypothesize that YAP, a regulator of Hippo pathway, inhibited osteoblast growth, skeletal development and bone repair, as well as excessive Ti ions promoted the progression of YAP activation. This study aimed to explore the role of Hippo/YAP signaling pathway in the biotoxicity effect of Ti ions on osteoblast behaviors. Here, we confirmed that 10 ppm Ti ions, a minimum concentration gradient previously reported that was capable of suppressing osteoblasts growth, induced nuclear expression of YAP in osteoblasts in our study. Furthermore, 10 ppm Ti ion-induced YAP activation was found to downregulate osteogenic differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells. Most importantly, the hypothesis we proposed that knockdown of YAP did reverse the inhibitory effect of 10 ppm Ti ions on osteogenesis has been verified. Taken together, our work provides insights into the mechanism of which YAP is involved in regulating osteoblast behaviors under the effect of Ti ions, which may help to develop therapeutic applications for Ti implant failures and peri-implantitis.

The adsorption of molecules on metal nanoparticles can be sterically controlled through the use of zeolite crystals, which enhances the product selectivity in hydrogenations of reactants with more than one reducible group. Key to this success was the fixation of Pd nanoparticles inside Beta zeolite crystals to form a defined structure (Pd@Beta). In the hydrogenation of substituted nitroarenes with multiple reducible groups as a model reaction, the Pd@Beta catalyst exhibited superior selectivity for hydrogenation of the nitro group, outperforming both conventional Pd nanoparticles supported on zeolite crystals and a commercial Pd/C catalyst. The extraordinary selectivity of Pd@Beta was attributed to the sterically selective adsorption of the nitroarenes on the Pd nanoparticles controlled by the zeolite micropores, as elucidated by competitive adsorption and adsorbate displacement tests. Importantly, this strategy is general and was extended to the synthesis of selective Pt and Ru catalysts by fixation inside Beta and mordenite zeolites.

Objective To study the changes in gray matter volume (GMV) in patients with advanced monocular blindness (MB) using voxel‐based morphometry (VBM). Methods Thirty‐one patients with advanced MB (25 males and six females) and 31 normal controls (25 males and six females) were enrolled. The t test was applied to determine the differences in GMV, white matter volume (WMV), and volume of cerebrospinal fluid in different regions of the brain. The local characteristics of spontaneous concentrations of brain tissue were evaluated by the VBM method. The effects of blindness duration on differences in the GMV were evaluated by correlation and regression analyses. Results Compared with the control group, the GMV was decreased in the upper right margin, bilateral insular cortex, right cingulate gyrus, left occipital gyrus, and right suboccipital lobe, and negatively correlated with blindness duration in the upper right posterior margin, bilateral insular cortex, and right cingulate cortex. Conclusions We found that patients with MB showed abnormal WMV and GMV, as evidenced by local changes in the brain. In addition, reduced GMV in specific parts of the brain was associated with the duration of blindness, which may indicate neuropathological mechanisms of visual loss in patients with MB., Patients with advanced monocular blindness (MB) showed abnormal white matter volume (WMV) and gray matter volume (GMV), as evidenced by local changes in the brain. A simple Pd-loaded Nb2 O5 /SiO2 catalyst was prepared for the hydrodeoxygenation of biomass-related compounds to alkanes under mild conditions. Niobium oxide dispersed in silica (Nb2 O5 /SiO2 ) as the support was prepared by the sol-gel method and characterized by various techniques, including N2 adsorption, XRD, NH3 temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), TEM, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX) atomic mapping. The characterization results showed that the niobium oxide species were amorphous and well dispersed in silica. Compared to commercial Nb2 O5 , Nb2 O5 /SiO2 has significantly more active niobium oxide species exposed on the surface. Under mild conditions (170 °C, 2.5 MPa), Pd/10 %Nb2 O5 /SiO2 was effective for the hydrodeoxygenation reactions of 4-(2-furyl)-3-buten-2-one (aldol adduct of furfural with acetone), palmitic acid, tristearin, and diphenyl ether (model compounds of microalgae oils, vegetable oils, and lignin), which gave high yields (>94 %) of alkanes with little CC bond cleavage. More importantly, owing to the significant promotion effect of NbOx species on CO bond cleavage and the mild reaction conditions, the CC cleavage was considerably restrained, and the catalyst showed an excellent activity and stability for the hydrodeoxygenation of palmitic acid with almost no decrease in hexadecane yield (94-95 %) in a 150 h time-on-stream test.

Hepatic vein reconstruction is one of the crucial issues in living donor liver transplantation (LDLT). In the present study, we report on a right liver LDLT excluding middle hepatic vein (MHV) using an MHV-dominant graft. Two large-sized inferior right hepatic veins were anastomosed to the recipient's inferior vena cava, respectively, in an end-to-side fashion. MHV tributaries were reconstructed using Y-shaped cryopreserved iliac artery, but resulted in segment VIII congestion. A Fogarty catheter was then used to take out the thrombus and control the bleeding when anastomosis was being performed. The patient recovered uneventfully. Postoperative computed tomography showed patent interposition grafts and normal perfusion of the liver. The patient was doing well 13 months after transplantation.

Type VI secretion is critical for Vibrio cholerae to successfully combat phagocytic eukaryotes and to survive in the presence of competing bacterial species. V. cholerae type VI secretion system genes are encoded in one large and two small clusters. In V. cholerae, type VI secretion is controlled by quorum sensing, the cell-cell communication process that enables bacteria to orchestrate group behaviours. The quorum-sensing response regulator LuxO represses type VI secretion genes at low cell density and the quorum-sensing regulator HapR activates type VI secretion genes at high cell density. We demonstrate that the quorum regulatory small RNAs (Qrr sRNAs) that function between LuxO and HapR in the quorum-sensing cascade are required for these regulatory effects. The Qrr sRNAs control type VI secretion via two mechanisms: they repress expression of the large type VI secretion system cluster through base pairing and they repress HapR, the activator of the two small type VI secretion clusters. This regulatory arrangement ensures that the large cluster encoding many components of the secretory machine is expressed prior to the two small clusters that encode the secreted effectors. Qrr sRNA-dependent regulation of the type VI secretion system is conserved in pandemic and non-pandemic V. cholerae strains.

We introduce the public key encryption with keywords search into the problem of secure two-party computation and obtain a novel approach to accomplish private set intersection PSI, which uses the public key encryption with keywords search as the basic tool. The public key encryption with keywords search scheme we adopt does not need the expensive MapToPoint operation, thus the computation complexity can be reduced significantly compared with other PSI schemes, which also obtain linear computation complexity. We aim to achieve PSI in computationally asymmetric settings, which can be instantiated by cloud computing. Our protocol satisfies the privacy with respect to semi-honest behavior, and the client only needs to compute m multiplications, m hashes, and one modular exponentiation to obtain the intersection, where m denotes the cardinality of the client's input set. Summary Quorum sensing is a mechanism of cell–cell communication that bacteria use to control collective behaviours including bioluminescence, biofilm formation and virulence factor production. In the Vibrio harveyi and Vibrio cholerae quorum-sensing circuits, multiple non-coding small regulatory RNAs called the quorum-regulated small RNAs (Qrr sRNAs) function to establish the global quorum-sensing gene expression pattern by modulating translation of multiple mRNAs encoding quorum-sensing regulatory factors. Here we show that the Qrr sRNAs post-transcriptionally activate production of the low cell density master regulator AphA through base pairing to aphA mRNA, and this is crucial for the accumulation of appropriate levels of AphA protein at low cell density. We find that the Qrr sRNAs use unique pairing regions to discriminate between their different targets. Qrr1 is not as effective as Qrr2–5 in activating aphA because Qrr1 lacks one of two required pairing regions. However, Qrr1 is equally effective as the other Qrr sRNAs at controlling targets like luxR and luxO because it harbours all of the required pairing regions for these targets. Sequence comparisons reveal that Vibrionaceae species possessing only qrr1 do not have the aphA gene under Qrr sRNA control. Our findings suggest co-evolving relationships between particular Qrr sRNAs and particular mRNA targets.

SUMMARY In this paper, a novel decentralized robust adaptive fuzzy control scheme is proposed for a class of large-scale multiple-input multiple-output uncertain nonlinear systems. By virtue of fuzzy logic systems and the regularized inverse matrix, the decentralized robust indirect adaptive fuzzy controller is developed such that the controller singularity problem is addressed under a united design framework; no a priori knowledge of the bounds on lumped uncertainties are being required. We studied three Fur-regulated systems of Listeria monocytogenes: the srtB region, that encodes sortase-anchored proteins and a putative ABC transporter, and the fhu and hup operons, that produce putative ABC transporters for ferric hydroxamates and haemin (Hn)/haemoglobin (Hb) respectively. Deletion of lmo2185 in the srtB region reduced listerial [(59) Fe]-Hn transport, and purified Lmo2185 bound [(59) Fe]-Hn (K(D) = 12 nM), leading to its designation as a Hn/Hb binding protein (hbp2). Purified Hbp2 also acted as a haemophore, capturing and supplying Hn from the environment. Nevertheless, Hbp2 only functioned in [(59) Fe]-Hn transport at external concentrations less than 50 nM: at higher Hn levels its uptake occurred with equivalent affinity and rate without Hbp2. Similarly, deletion of sortase A had no effect on ferric siderophore or Hn/Hb transport at any concentration, and the srtA-independence of listerial Hn/Hb uptake distinguished it from comparable systems of Staphylococcus aureus. In the cytoplasmic membrane, the Hup transporter was specific for Hn: its lipoprotein (HupD) only showed high affinity for the iron porphyrin (K(D) = 26 nM). Conversely, the FhuD lipoprotein encoded by the fhu operon had broad specificity: it bound both ferric siderophores and Hn, with the highest affinity for ferrioxamine B (K(D) = 123 nM). Deletions of Hup permease components hupD, hupG or hupDGC reduced Hn/Hb uptake, and complementation of ΔhupC and ΔhupG by chromosomal integration of hupC(+) and hupG(+) alleles on pPL2 restored growth promotion by Hn/Hb. However, ΔhupDGC did not completely eliminate [(59) Fe]-Hn transport, implying the existence of another cytoplasmic membrane Hn transporter. The overall K(M) of Hn uptake by wild-type strain EGD-e was 1 nM, and it occurred at similar rates (V(max) = 23 pmol 10(9) cells(-1) min(-1)) to those of ferric siderophore transporters. In the ΔhupDGC strain uptake occurred at a threefold lower rate (V(max) = 7 pmol 10(9) cells(-1) min(-1)). The results show that at low (< 50 nM) levels of Hn, SrtB-dependent peptidoglycan-anchored proteins (e.g. Hbp2) bind the porphyrin, and HupDGC or another transporter completes its uptake into the cytoplasm. However, at higher concentrations Hn uptake is SrtB-independent: peptidoglycan-anchored binding proteins are dispensable because HupDGC directly absorbs and internalizes Hn. Finally, ΔhupDGC increased the LD(50) of L. monocytogenes 100-fold in the mouse infection model, reiterating the importance of this system in listerial virulence.

This study compared how adults assess the credibility of children who either: (1) experienced a misleading suggestive interview, (2) were coached to lie or (3) experienced a non-misleading interview. Preschool children (N = 24) were interviewed about a game they had played. One third of them spontaneously reported the truth, one third lied in response to coaching and one third spontaneously reported misinformation from a prior misleading suggestive interview. One hundred and twenty-nine college students watched videotaped interviews of these children describing their alleged play activities and assessed their credibility. Children who had experienced misleading suggestive questioning were rated as less credible than those who were telling the truth and those who were lying. Adults could accurately detect truth-telling children above chance, whereas accuracy was below chance detecting both lying children and children who had been misinformed. This study examined the relation of language to the development of a cultural self. Bilingual children ages 8-14 from Hong Kong (N = 125) were interviewed in either English or Chinese. They recalled autobiographical events and described themselves, and indicated their agreement with Chinese interdependent versus Western independent values. Children interviewed in English provided more elaborate and self-focused self-descriptions and memory accounts and endorsed more strongly Western values, compared with children interviewed in Chinese. Furthermore, the endorsement of a cultural belief system mediated the effect of language on self-concept, which, in turn, mediated the effect of language on autobiographical memory. These findings offer new insight into the dynamic relations between language, culture, and the self.

For elucidating the regulatory mechanism of ethylene on carotenoid-related volatiles (open chain) compounds and the relationship between lycopene and carotenoid-related volatiles, transgenic tomato fruits in which ACC synthase was suppressed were used. The transgenic tomato fruit showed a significant reduction of lycopene and aroma volatiles with low ethylene production. 6-Methyl-5-hepten-2-one, 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-ol and geranylacetone, which were suspected to be lycopene degradation products, were lower than those in wild type tomato fruits. In order to identify whether lycopene accumulation effects the biosynthesis of some carotenoid-related volatiles independent of ethylene in tomato or not, the capability of both wild type and transgenic tomato fruits discs to convert lycopene into carotenoid-related volatiles was evaluated. The data showed that external lycopene could convert into 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one and 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-ol in vivo, indicating that the strong inhibition of ethylene production had no effect on enzymes in the biosynthesis pathway of some carotenoid-related volatiles. Therefore, in ACS-suppression transgenic tomato fruits, the low levels of 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one, 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-ol was due to decreased lycopene accumulation, not ethylene production. Ethylene only affected the accumulation of lycopene, and then indirectly influenced the level of lycopene-related volatiles.

Loss-of-function ethylene insensitive 2 (EIN2) mutations showed ethylene insensitivity in Arabidopsis, which indicated an essential role of EIN2 in ethylene signaling. However, the function of EIN2 in fruit ripening has not been investigated. To gain a better understanding of EIN2, the temporal regulation of LeEIN2 expression during tomato fruit development was analyzed. The expression of LeEIN2 was constant at different stages of fruit development, and was not regulated by ethylene. Moreover, LeEIN2-silenced tomato fruits were developed using a virus-induced gene silencing fruit system to study the role of LeEIN2 in tomato fruit ripening. Silenced fruits had a delay in fruit development and ripening, related to greatly descended expression of ethylene-related and ripening-related genes in comparison with those of control fruits. These results suggested LeEIN2 positively mediated ethylene signals during tomato development. In addition, there were fewer seeds and locules in the silenced fruit than those in the control fruit, like the phenotype of parthenocarpic tomato fruit. The content of auxin and the expression of auxin-regulated gene were declined in silenced fruit, which indicated that EIN2 might be important for crosstalk between ethylene and auxin hormones.
