Prior research has shown that students' previous grade point average (GPA) is the best predictor for future academic success. However, it can only partly predict the variability in dental school performance. The aim of this study was to assess the predictive value of multiple mini-interviews (MMI) as an admission criterion by comparing them with the academic performance of dental students over a two-year period. All incoming undergraduate dental students at the King Abdulaziz University Faculty of Dentistry (KAUFD) during academic year 2013-14 were invited to participate in MMI. Students rotated through six objective structured clinical exam (OSCE)-like stations for 30 minutes total and were interviewed by two trained faculty interviewers at each station. The stations were focused on noncognitive skills thought to be essential to academic performance at KAUFD. The academic performance of these students was then followed for two years and linked to their MMI scores. A total of 146 students (71 males and 75 females) participated in an interview (response rate=92.9%). Most students scored in the acceptable range at each MMI station. Infectious eczematoid dermatitis (IED) is characterized by an acute eczematous eruption triggered by purulent discharge from a primary infected site. Alcohol consumption, cigarette smoking and occupations with higher incidences of contact dermatitis portend increased risk for IED. Staphylococcus aureus is the most commonly cultured microbe from affected skin, with Streptococcus species the second most. Patients are first evident with peripherally spreading vesicles and pustules radiating from an infected site. Older areas of involvement become crusty, scaly and erythematous. Diagnosis is clinical. Other eczematous rashes, including autoeczemitization and contact dermatitis, should be on the differential diagnosis list. The treatment centres on topical antibiotics and soaks. Prognosis has improved since the advent of antibiotics. However, cases with multiple relapses and poor response to therapy are still observed.

Objective:Filamentous actin (F-actin) plays a central role in maintaining endothelial barrier function. Thrombin and histamine, two inflammatory mediators that increase endothelial permeability, can alter F-actin production and distribution. In this study, we use a newly developed image analysis technique to show that these two inflammatory mediators differentially alter F-actin structure. Methods:Human umbilical vein endothelial cells were grown to confluence and treated with either histamine (1 µM), thrombin (1 µM) or the agonist's vehicle. The endothelium was stained with BODIPY-phallodin, and digitized images were taken of the treated cells. The digitized images of individual human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) were imported into a F-actin image analysis program (FAAP) and converted to layers, each one-pixel thick. Cardiac tamponade was manifested in a 30-year-old male with a 6-month history of fever and weight loss prior to admission. Cross-sectional echocardiography demonstrated huge pericardial effusion with a large mass in the posterior pericardial space. Pericardiocentesis revealed exudative fluid with no malignant cells. Surgery performed to determine the nature of the mass disclosed the mass originating from the posterior pericardium, invading the posterior pleural sac and adjacent structures. Histopathology identified spindle cell sarcoma. The preoperative diagnosis of the mass and its presenting features and nature are discussed. (ECHOCARDIOGRAPHY, Volume 13, May 1996)
