Spodoptera frugiperda is an important invasive agricultural pest that causes huge economic losses worldwide. Gut microorganisms play a vital role in host feeding, digestion, nutrition, immunity, growth and insecticide resistance. Illumina high-throughput sequencing was used to study the gut microbial community dynamics across the life cycle (egg, 1st to 6th instar larvae, pupae, and male and female adults) of S. frugiperda fed on maize leaves. Furthermore, the gut microbial community and food intake of the 5th instar S. frugiperda larvae were studied after feeding them antibiotics.Enterobacteriaceae and Enterococcaceae dominated the gut during growth and feeding of the larvae. The relative abundance of Enterobacteriaceae was higher in the 4th and 6th instar larvae. With the increase in larval feeding, the relative abundance of Enterococcaceae gradually increased. In addition, principal coordinate analysis and linear discriminant effect size analysis confirmed differences in the structure of gut microbiota at different developmental stages. After antibiotic treatment, the relative abundance of Firmicutes, Proteobacteria and Fusobacteriota decreased. The relative abundance of Enterococcus and Klebsiella decreased significantly. Antibiotic treatment inhibited the gut flora of S. frugiperda, which decreased larval food intake and body weight gain, and prolonged the larval stage.The composition of the gut bacterial community plays an important role in the growth, development, and feeding of S. frugiperda. Innovations in synthetic chemistry have a profound impact on the drug discovery process, and will always be a necessary driver of drug development. As a result, it is of significance to develop novel simple and effective synthetic installation of medicinal modules to promote drug discovery. Herein, we have developed a NaClOmediated cross installation of indoles and azoles, both of which are frequently encountered in drugs and natural products. This effective toolbox provides a convenient synthetic route to access a library of Nlinked 2-(azol-1-yl) indole derivatives, and can be used for late-stage modification of drugs, natural products and peptides. Moreover, biological screening of the library has revealed that several adducts showed promising anticancer activities against A549 and NCI-H1975 cells, which give us a hit for anticancer drug discovery.

Anal atresia is the most common malformation occurring in VACTERL association, but it is difficult to diagnose antenatally. We herein present a case of fetal anal atresia in VACTERL association diagnosed by ultrasonography and supported by autopsy. This case emphasizes the clues to ultrasonographic diagnosis of anal atresia at 11-13+6 weeks of gestation, promoting increased awareness of VACTERL association during first-trimester screening.

Background Treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is evolving toward Intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) era, which requires patient-specific reestimation of survival outcomes in modern health care. Methods A total of 488 detectable pre-treatment Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) DNA patients (stage II-IVa) treated with induction chemotherapy (IC) and IMRT were examined (training set, n = 325; validation set, n = 163). Results Concurrent chemotherapy (CC) was still an independent prognosticator for overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS). Both nomograms included age, T classification, N classification, post-IC EBV DNA, and CC. Predictions correlated well with observed 3-/5-year OS and PFS. The concordance index was 0.776 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.69-0.86) for OS and 0.742 (95% CI 0.65-0.83) for PFS in the validation cohort. The nomograms can successfully classify patients into low- and high-risk groups. Conclusion The validated nomograms provided useful prediction of OS and PFS for detectable pre-treatment EBV DNA patients with NPC in IMRT era.

Objective To report the clinical and radiological outcomes of arthroscopically assisted surgery for combination of glenoid and greater tuberosity fractures after traumatic shoulder dislocation. Methods From December 2013 to December 2018, patients with concomitant fracture of the greater tuberosity and glenoid who underwent arthroscopically assisted surgery were retrospectively reviewed. Fifteen patients were included. Preoperative computed tomography (CT) scans with 3D reconstruction were performed to evaluate the fracture configuration and associated fractures. All patients underwent arthroscopically assisted surgery under general anesthesia with brachial plexus anesthesia in the lateral position. Under the arthroscopic approach, a comprehensive inspection of the joints was firstly conducted to examine the injury of bones and other tissues. With arthroscopy support, closed reduction and internal fixation of both fractures were performed with suture anchors, with or without additional cannulated screws. At the same time, other injuries were also repaired under the arthroscope. Patients were followed up (6 weeks，8 weeks，3 months，6 months，1 year after surgery) regularly for at least 1 year. At the follow‐up, clinical outcomes (Constant score, ASES score, range of motion, and VAS score) and radiological outcomes were analyzed. Results Of the 15 patients, there are seven cases of men, eight cases of women; aged 22–66 years, with an average age of 48 years; left shoulder for five cases, 10 cases of the right shoulder. The injury mechanisms were: a simple fall (n = 9), an epileptic seizure (n = 1), a high fall injury (n = 2), and a traffic accident (n = 3). Of the 15 cases of glenoid fracture, 11 cases were type Ia and four cases were type II according to the Ideberg Classification System. The mean size of the glenoid fracture fragment was 28.4% (range, 8.7%–47.2%). According to the Mutch classification system, the fractures of the greater tuberosity were divided into: five cases of avulsion, one case of compression, and nine cases of split. Average time of follow‐up was 38.2 months (range, 12–70 months), and one case was lost to follow‐up. With fractures healing well, almost all patients had a good joint function. At the final follow‐up, mean anterior flexion was 157°; mean external rotation was 40°; mean internal rotation was T11 level; the mean Constant–Murley score was 94.6 points (range, 70–100 points); the mean ASES score was 94.6 points (range, 79–100 points); and the mean VAS score was 0.4 points (range, 0–2 points). No recurrent instability or re‐dislocation occurred. No patient had revision surgery. Conclusion Arthroscopic management of glenoid and greater tuberosity bipolar fractures was useful and effective with minimal injury, and it achieved satisfactory clinical and radiological outcomes at a mean follow‐up time of more than 3 years., Arthroscopic management of glenoid and greater tuberosity bipolar fractures after traumatic shoulder dislocation was useful and effective with minimal injury, and it achieved satisfactory clinical and radiological outcomes at a mean follow‐up time more than 3 years.

Objective Based on the morphological characteristics of glenoid and greater tuberosity (GT) fractures and the relationship between them, we explored the injury mechanism of acute anterior shoulder dislocation associated with glenoid and GT fractures. Methods From December 2013 to December 2019, we retrospectively reviewed the clinical data of patients who were diagnosed with acute anterior shoulder dislocation associated with glenoid and GT fractures in our hospital. According to the fracture site, a glenoid fracture group and a greater tuberosity fracture (GT) group were established, and the morphological characteristics of both glenoid and GT fractures were measured and statistically analyzed. Results A total of 41 patients (43 shoulders) met the inclusion criteria (39 unilateral shoulders and 2 bilateral shoulders). The mean age was 50.21 years (range, 22–71 years). A total of 27 shoulder injuries (62.8%) were split GT fractures and 33 shoulder injuries (76.7%) were combined with rotator cuff tears. The mean size of glenoid fragments was 30.16% and the mean displacement was 8.85 mm. The mean size of GT fragments was 28.43 mm. The mean superoinferior and anteroposterior displacements of the GT fragment were 6.77 mm and 4.96 mm, respectively. There was a negative correlation between the size of glenoid and GT fracture fragments (r = −0.64, P < 0.05). The glenoid fragments in the Ideberg type Ia glenoid fracture group were smaller than those in the Ideberg type II glenoid fracture group (28.41% and 40.95%, respectively), while the size of GT fragments in the type Ia group were larger than those in the type II group (29.77 mm and 20.21 mm, respectively) (P < 0.05). The GT fragments in the split GT fracture group were larger than those in the avulsion or depression GT fracture group (33.69 mm, 19.07 mm and 21.12 mm, respectively), while the size of glenoid fragments in the split GT fracture group were smaller than those in the avulsion or depression GT fracture group (23.57%, 41.37%, and 43.42%, respectively) (P, In this work, we focus on the morphological characteristics of glenoid and greater tuberosity (GT) fracture and the relationship between them, we have explored the injury mechanism of acute anterior shoulder dislocation associated with glenoid and GT fracture. Schisandra chinensis fruit has been shown to restore carbohydrate- and lipid-metabolic disorders and has anti-hepatotoxicity and anti-hepatitis activities. However, the molecular targets mediating the pharmacological properties of S. chinensis fruit have not been clarified. Here, we assayed the effects of S. chinensis fruit ethanol extract (SCE) on farnesoid X receptor (FXR) transactivity. The pharmacological effects of SCE (1 g/100 g diet) were assessed in high-fat diet (HFD)-fed C57BL/6 mice and ob/ob mice. The FXR and Fgf15 signalling pathways were evaluated by FXR silencing, ELISA, Western blot and RT-PCR analyses. The results showed that SCE treatment increased FXR transcription activity and improved obesity, hypercholesteremia and fatty liver in HFD-fed mice, while it had limited effects on ob/ob mice. Our study suggests that SCE treatment may improve HFD-induced metabolic disorders through pharmacological activation of FXR/Fgf15 signalling, and such beneficial effects of SCE may require leptin participation.

Past work has found that infants show more interest when an object that has at least two properties of animate beings, such as engaging in self-generated motion and having fur, is shown to be hollow than when an object with none or one of these properties is revealed to be hollow. When an object is grabbed by a hand and moved to a new place, by 7 months of age, infants explain the motion of the object as due to the hand, and thus do not interpret this object as capable of self-generated motion. This constant application of force is called an "entraining" event. Other work has found that 6-month-old infants are sensitive to the reversals of causal roles in "launching" events (billiard-ball-like collisions), but not entraining events. Here, we examine whether 10-month-old infants explain the motion of the patient in a launching event as being due to the contact with the launching agent. Experiment 1 replicates past work, showing that infants look longer when a self-propelled object with animate features (fur or feathers) is shown to be hollow, compared to a similar object undergoing spatiotemporally identical motion entrained by a human agent. Experiment 2 finds that infants look equally at the agent and patient, both covered by fur or feathers, of a launching event when each is revealed to be hollow. Experiment 3 shows that infants look longer when a fur-covered causal patient is shown to be hollow compared to a plain-box causal agent, indicating that 10-month-old infants do not explain the motion of the causal patient of a launching event as due to the agent, even though they do so for an entraining event. This dissociation suggests the existence of multiple independent causal representations in the first year of life.

Downsizing the catalyst to atom scale offers an effective way to maximize the atom utilization efficiency for electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR). Herein, single-atomic ruthenium (Ru) anchored on a chemically activated Ti 3 C 2 with O-terminated groups (Ti 3 C 2 O) is designed to catalyze the NRR process . The catalyst achieves a superior activity and selectivity with ammonia yield rate of 27.56 µg h -1 mg -1 and Faradaic efficiency of 23.3% at a low potential of -0.20 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode. According to the atomic resolution images from aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy, Ru sites on Ti 3 C 2 O achieve well dispersion in atomic scale. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis further demonstrates that the O-termination groups are successfully activated. Density functional theory calculations combined with experiments reveal that single Ru sites binding to four oxygen are the main reaction centers that permit the hydrogenation of *NNH 2 to *NHNH 2 in a novel distal/alternating hybrid path with reducing the energy barrier of the potential-limiting step to 0.78 eV from 0.96 eV in distal path alone or 1.18 eV in alternating path alone , thereby significantly promoting the NRR dynamics.

Dongxiang Spotted, Pingxiang Two-End-Black and Yushan Black pigs are three indigenous breeds in Jiangxi Province, China, that have been listed in the national conservation program for Chinese indigenous livestock germplasm. Here, we investigated the genetic diversity and population structure of the nucleus populations of these three breeds in a worldwide context of European and Chinese pigs using Illumina Porcine 60K chips. Our data indicate that Dongxiang Spotted and Yushan Black pigs have recently experienced severe inbreeding. The two breeds show large runs-of-homozygosity values, long-range extents of linkage disequilibrium and reduced observed heterozygosity. In contrast, Pingxiang Two-End-Black pigs are rich in genetic diversity and have few inbred individuals. Both phylogenetic and admixture analyses illustrate that Dongxiang Spotted and Yushan Black pigs are genetically close to their geographical neighbors in East China and that Pingxiang Two-End-Black pigs have a close relationship with three other Two-End-Black breeds in central China. Finally, we reconstructed the family structures of the three breeds and propose a reliable breeding strategy to better conserve these breeds.

The cooperative path following problem of multiple underactuated autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) involves two tasks. The first one is to force each AUV to converge to the desired parameterized path. The second one is to satisfy the requirement of a cooperative behavior along the paths. In this paper, both of the tasks have been further studied. For the first one, a simplified path following controller is proposed by incorporating the dynamic surface control (DSC) technique to avoid the calculation of derivatives of virtual control signals. Besides, in order to handle the uncertain dynamics, a new type of neural network (NN) adaptive controller is derived, and then an NN based energy-efficient path following controller is firstly proposed, which consists of an adaptive neural controller dominating in the neural active region and an extra robust controller working outside the neural active region. For the second one, in order to reduce the amount of communications between multiple AUVs, a distributed estimator for the reference common speed is firstly proposed as determined by the communications topology adopted, which means the global knowledge of the reference speed is relaxed for the problem of cooperative path following. The overall algorithm ensures that all the signals in the closed-loop system are globally uniformly ultimately bounded (GUUB) and the output of the system converges to a small neighborhood of the reference trajectory by properly choosing the design parameters. Simulation results validate the performance and robustness of the proposed strategy.

Background and Purpose The therapeutic management of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections remains challenging, and novel antiviral strategies are urgently required. The HBV transbody, a monoclonal antibody (MAb) against human HBcAg coupled with the trans-activator of transcription protein transduction domain (TAT PTD), was previously shown to possess cell-penetrating ability and potent antiviral activity in vitro. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the antiviral activity of the HBcMAb-TAT PTD conjugate in vivo in a duck model of HBV. Experimental Approach Female Peking ducks were injected i.p. with 0.03-0.3 mg·kg−1·day−1 of the DHBV transbody (DHBcMAb-TAT PTD conjugate) for 30 days. Serum DHBV DNA levels and liver DHBV DNA and covalently closed circular DNA (cccDNA) loads were determined at scheduled time points. Immunohistological examination of DHBcAg in the duck liver was also performed. Key Results The DHBV transbody significantly reduced the serum and liver DHBV DNA levels at doses of 0.1 and 0.3 mg·kg−1·day−1 and liver cccDNA levels at a dose of 0.3 mg·kg−1·day−1 after 30 days of treatment. The suppressive effects of the DHBV transbody at 0.3 mg·kg−1·day−1 on the serum and liver DHBV DNA and liver cccDNA levels remained significant, even at 15 days after treatment cessation. Similarly, immunohistochemistry of liver sections revealed decreased DHBcAg levels within hepatocytes 15 days after treatment termination. Conclusions and Implications The DHBV transbody inhibits DHBV replication and possesses potent anti-DHBV activities in vivo. The cell-permeable antibody against the virus core antigen may be developed as a novel treatment for patients with hepadnavirus infections.

Background and objective Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health challenge. China accounts for more than 10% of the global TB burden, and effective modelling of TB trends remains limited. Methods We used data drawn primarily from two Chinese nation-wide cross-sectional epidemiological surveys combined with data from China's National Disease Reporting Network to construct an eight-state Markov model that simulates TB prevalence. By adjusting the relevant parameters, we evaluated which characteristics have the greatest bearing upon prevalence and efficacy of the response measures. Results If current trends continue, the prevalence of TB in China will enter an 8-year period of decline from approximately 390 to 200 cases per 100 000 population and stabilize at 163 cases per 100 000 population, which is a figure well above the World Health Organization (WHO) goal of eliminating TB by 2050. We find that the proportion of notified cases in the population, the rate of progression from latent to active and the overall treatment success rate are the chief factors affecting disease progression. Conclusion We suggest a 90-90-90 strategy, wherein the proportion of notified cases in the population reaches 90%, the risk of progression from latent to active is decreased by 90% compared with the current level and the overall treatment success rate is increased to 90%. This strategy could reduce TB prevalence to less than 10 cases per 100 000 population within 5 years and to 1.77 cases per 100 000 population within 50 years.

Background The insulin/insulin receptor substrate (IRS)/phosphatidylinositol 3‐kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (Akt)/GLUT4 pathway plays a crucial role in insulin resistance and is closely associated with T2DM. Accumulating evidence indicates that miRNAs (such as miR‐135a, let‐7d, miR‐107, miR‐96, miR‐29a, miR‐23a, miR‐126, miR‐133a, and miR‐106b) influence the GLUT4 pathway. Methods A total of 784 subjects with T2DM and 846 nondiabetic subjects were enrolled and 12 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in miRNAs (rs10459194 in miR‐135a‐2, rs10993081 and rs7045890 in let‐7d, rs2296616 in miR‐107, rs2402959 and rs6965643 in miR‐96, rs24168 in miR‐29a, rs3745453 in miR‐23a, rs4636297 in miR‐126, rs8089787 and rs9948906 in miR‐133a‐1 and rs999885 in miR‐106b) involved in the GLUT4 pathway were genotyped using the MassArray method in a Chinese population. The present study examines the uptake of the heavy metal cadmium (Cd) by Microcystis aeruginosa in the presence of dissolved organic matter (DOM) from different origins. The DOM used in the present study were extracted from soil, sediment taken from Meiliang Bay at Taihu Lake, and from M. aeruginosa cultured in the laboratory. The 3 different DOM samples were characterized using ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy was used to characterize the interactions of DOM with Cd2+ . The results showed that all types of DOM extracted from the 3 sources in the present study exhibited aliphatic and aromatic characteristics and contained hydroxyls, carbonyls, phenols, carboxyls, carbohydrates, amines, and ethers. Humic acids and fulvic acids proved to be the major components of DOM. The sediment DOM had the highest degrees of aromatization and humification among the samples. The results also showed that sediment and soil DOM samples had lower molecular weights than M. aeruginosa DOM. The DOM could react with Cd2+ by complexing to alter Cd speciation. When exposed to Cd, EEM fluorescence intensities of all 3 DOM types had a significant decrease, and the intracellular Cd content improved with increasing Cd concentrations. Objectives To investigate the predictors of and generate a risk prediction method for periprocedural myocardial infarction (PMI) after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) using the new PMI definition proposed by the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI). Background The SCAI-defined PMI was found to be associated with worse prognosis than the PMI diagnosed by other definitions. However, few large-sample studies have attempted to predict the risk of SCAI-defined PMI. Methods A total of 3,371 patients (3,516 selective PCIs) were included in this single-center retrospective analysis. The diagnostic criteria for PMI were set according to the SCAI definition. All clinical characteristics, coronary angiography findings and PCI procedural factors were collected. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to identify independent predictors of PMI. To evaluate the risk of PMI, a multivariable risk score (PMI score) was constructed with incremental weights attributed to each component variable according to their estimated coefficients. Results PMI occurred in 108 (3.1%) of all patients. Age, multivessel treatment, at least one bifurcation treatment and total treated lesion length were independent predictors of SCAI-defined PMI. PMI scores ranged from 0 to 20. The C-statistic of PMI score was 0.71 (95% confidence interval: 0.66–0.76). PMI rates increased significantly from 1.96% in the non-high-risk group (PMI score

The interaction of pepsin with daidzein (Dai) or genistein (Gen) was investigated using spectroscopic techniques under simulated physiological conditions. Dai and Gen can quench the fluorescence of pepsin and the quenching mechanism was a static process. The binding site number n and apparent binding constant K were measured at different temperatures. The thermodynamic parameters ΔΗ, ΔG and ΔS were calculated. The results indicated that van der Waals forces and hydrogen bond formation played major roles in the interaction of Dai or Gen with pepsin. The binding distance between pepsin and Dai or Gen was calculated according to energy transfer theory. The results of synchronous fluorescence spectra showed that the microenvironment and conformation of pepsin were changed. UV absorption and 3D fluorescence spectra showed that the binding interaction disturbed the microenvironment of amino acid residues and induced conformational changes in pepsin. Molecular docking results showed that Dai and Gen entered into the hydrophobic cavity of pepsin and two hydrogen bonds formed between Dai or Gen and pepsin. The results demonstrated that the interaction behavior between Dai and Gen with pepsin was slightly different, which denoted that the 5-hydroxyl group of Gen, to a certain extent, had an effect on ligand binding to proteins. Objectives We aimed to investigate the effect of bifurcation angle (BA) on side branch (SB) occlusion after main vessel (MV) stenting. Background: BA is thought to impact the risk of SB occlusion in coronary bifurcation patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Methods A total of 1,171 consecutive patients with 1,200 bifurcation lesions undergoing one stent or provisional two stent techniques were studied. The lesions were divided into low angle and high angle groups using the median BA (52°). Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to identify independent predictors of SB occlusion. Results SB occlusion occurred in 88 (7.33%) of 1,200 bifurcation lesions treated with the one stent technique or MV stenting first strategy. Evidence indicates that the ubiquitin-proteasome system and the endoplasmic retculum (ER) quality-control system work in concert to ensure that proteins are correctly folded in the ER and that misfolded proteins are retrotransported to the cytosol for degradation by proteasomes. Dysfunction of either system results in developmental abnormalities and even death in animals. This study investigates whether and how proteasome inhibition impacts the components of the calreticulin (CRT)/calnexin (CNX) glycoprotein folding machinery, a typical ER protein quality-control system, in the context of early neuronal injury. Here we report that proteasome inhibitor treatments, at nonlethal levels, reduced protein levels of CRT and ERp57 but not of CNX. These treatments increased protein levels of CRT in culture media, an effect blocked by brefeldin A, an inhibitor of protein trafficking; by contrast, ERp57 was not detected in culture media. Knockdown of CRT levels alone increased the vulnerability of SH-SY5Y, a neuronal cell line, to 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) toxicity. In a rat model of Parkinson's disease, intrastriatal 6-OHDA lesions resulted in decreased levels of CRT and ERp57 in the midbrain. These findings suggest that reduction of the components of CRT/CNX glycoprotein quality-control system may play a role in neuronal injury in Parkinson's disease and other neurodegenerative disorders associated with dysfunction of the ubiquitin-proteasome system.

Background and Purpose The glycoprotein IIb/IIIa receptor is the final common pathway of platelet aggregation, regardless of the agonist, and thus represents an ideal therapeutic target for blocking coronary thrombosis. In this study, the anti-platelet and antithrombotic actions of Z4A5, a new glycoprotein IIb/IIIa receptor inhibitor, were evaluated in a canine model of acute unstable angina. Experimental Approach Z4A5 was given i.v. as a bolus followed by 60 min of continuous infusion at doses of 30 μg·kg−1 + 1 μg·kg−1·min−1, 30 μg·kg−1 + 5 μg·kg−1·min−1 or 300 μg·kg−1 + 5 μg·kg−1·min−1. Its antithrombotic effect was evaluated in a model of coronary thrombosis, the injured, stenosed left circumflex coronary artery, in which platelet-dependent cyclic flow reductions (CFRs) were induced by vascular compression and constriction to simulate clinical acute unstable angina. Platelet aggregation and coagulation parameters were determined in platelet-rich plasma and platelet poor plasma respectively. Key Results The Z4A5 infusion induced a dose-dependent reduction in CFR frequency, which returned to baseline levels after the termination of the infusion at low doses. At medium dose that inhibited most part of platelet aggregation, it increased tongue bleeding time marginally with no dramatic changes in haemodynamic and coagulation parameters. Furthermore, the inhibition of ADP-induced platelet aggregation and prolonged bleeding time observed during Z4A5 infusion reverted to baseline levels after the termination of the infusion. Conclusions and Implications Z4A5 is an effective antithrombotic agent for coronary artery thrombosis with a rapid-on and rapid-off pharmacological profile, and could be used as an alternative treatment of coronary artery ischaemic syndromes.

Flowing water bodies often have plants that differ greatly in size and type, which interfere with fluid flow structure. Although there are studies describing vegetation–flow interactions in ideal laboratory conditions, their practical application is sometimes still difficult. This paper presents results of research involving laboratory simulations channel flow and the effects upon its structure as it passes through a combined layer of submerged and emerged vegetation in an open-channel flume. Instantaneous time-average velocity and turbulence at various locations were measured with a 3D acoustic Doppler velocimeter. The experimental results showed that the mean velocity profiles can be divided into three layers: bottom, middle and upper. The velocity profiles show the flow structure was complex variable over time creating mixing velocity layers associated with inflection points and velocity spikes. Turbulence intensity urms, vrms, wrms was nearly invariant for the flow depth at the bottom layer in most locations within the vegetation area. Maximum turbulence intensity occurred within the middle layer and migrated vertically as frontal width of the plant increased. Maximum turbulence intensity fluctuated at the velocity mixing layer where there is significant momentum exchange. The Manning's vegetation roughness coefficient n(v) due to vegetation resistance increased with vegetation density as expected. In all, the results show flow structure varies substantially at the stem section and at the canopy top of submerged vegetation. These analytical findings will be useful in understanding river channel hydraulic transport and mixing processes and useful in river engineering applications and modelling. The transport of bromide (Br) under matric heads of 0, -2, -5, and -10 cm using undisturbed soil columns was investigated for understanding the solute transport in arid soils. Undisturbed soil cores were collected at ground surface, directly below where tension infiltrometer measurements were made in the Amargosa Desert, Nevada, United States. Laboratory experiments were conducted by introducing water containing Br tracer into a soil column maintained at steady-state conditions. The observed data of breakthrough curves (BTC) were well fitted to an one-region model, except for the cores at saturation, and a core at the matric head of -5 cm, from which the observed data were better fitted to a two-region model. Fitted pore water velocities with the one-region model ranged from 1.2 to 56.6 cm/h, and fitted dispersion coefficients (D) ranged from 2.2 to 100 cm² /h. Results for the core analyzed with the two-region model indicated that D ranged from 27.6 to 70.9 cm² /h at saturation, and 25.7 cm² /h at the matric head of -5 cm; fraction of mobile water (β) ranged from 0.18 to 0.65, and mass transfer coefficient (ω) ranged from 0.006 to 0.03. In summary, the water fluxes and Br dispersion coefficients at investigated matric heads were very high due to the coarseness of the soils and possibly due to preferential flow pathways. These high water fluxes and Br dispersion coefficients would lead to a higher risk of deeper leaching accumulating nitrate nitrogen to the groundwater, and have significant effects on the desert ecosystem.

A catalyst-controlled switch of regioselectivity in asymmetric allylic alkylation of oxazolones with MBHCs was described. The SN2′–SN2′ reaction catalysed by a quinine-derived base produced γ-selective secondary allylic oxazolone derivatives, whereas the addition–elimination reaction catalysed by an amino acid-derived bifunctional urea catalyst provided β-selective primary adducts.

Summary Adiponectin, which is secreted by the white adipose tissue, plays an important role in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and its complications. Since 2002, many investigators explored the association between ADIPOQ single nucleotide polymorphisms and T2DM in different ethnic populations from different regions. In China, the results of numerous studies of the association between ADIPOQ and T2DM were not consistent, which may be caused by population-specific effects or environmental effects. Tandem oxidative cleavage/coupling of benzoxazoles with α-oxocarboxylic acids allows the synthesis of benzoxazinones via in situ generated ortho-aminophenol derivatives.

The supercooling points of cold (-10C and -5C) and heat (37 C, 40 C and 45 C) shocked overwintering larvae were nearly the same as that of un-shocked ones (ca. -20C). Temperature shocks enhanced the ability to endure subzero temperature (- 15C, 3 h), and the cold shock treatment had more significant effect on maintaining larval survival than that of heat shock. It is the third insect that heat shock and cold shock enhanced its survival rate under low temperature simultaneously. A special stress protein (MW = 83 kD) was expressed under cold shock at -10 C and heat shock at 40 C or 45 C. It is also a few instances that a stress protein was expressed in the same insect under both heat shock and cold shock simultaneously. Meanwhile, the antioxidant system under different treatments was studied. Rapid cold hardening process had no oxidative stress because of the increase content of reduced glutathione and activity of glutathione reductase, but other treatments had.

Wnt signaling regulates cortical and hippocampal development. In a previous study we found that a particular Wnt receptor, Frizzled9 (Fzd9), was selectively expressed in both the developing and adult hippocampus. Taking advantage of the specificity of this promoter, we generated a transgenic cre mouse line using the putative control elements of the Fzd9 gene. In the Fzd9-cre mice, Cre is mainly detected in the developing cortex and hippocampus and is confined to the CA fields and dentate gyrus in adults. Furthermore, by crossing the Fzd9-cre mouse with the ROSA26 reporter line, we examined the activity of Cre and found that it has very high recombination efficiency. Thus, this mouse line will likely prove to be a useful tool for studying cortical and hippocampal development via activation or inactivation of interesting genes.
