Classic selective sweeps occur when positive selection increases a variant's frequency from low to high in a population, and underlie some long-studied human characteristics such as variation in skin, hair or eye colour. In such well-studied 'gold standard' examples, a known variant has been associated with a plausible phenotype and underlying selective force. Signatures of classic sweeps have more recently been detected in population-genetic data independently of any prior information about the corresponding phenotype or selective force, and usually without suggesting any insights into these. Motivated by the need to understand such candidates, we first review the gold standards and show that our understanding of them is often incomplete or unconvincing; only two of the examples we consider are compellingly explained. We assess approaches for large-scale association of classic sweep candidate variants to phenotypes and selective forces, test these on the gold standards, and discuss the standards of evidence needed to adequately understand a selective sweep.

Aluminum-air batteries (AABs) are deemed as a potential clean energy storage device. However, exploiting high-efficiency and stable oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts in AABs is still a challenge. Iron phthalocyanine (FePc) shows a great prospect in ORR but still far from Pt-based catalysts. Here, the hybrid electrocatalysts of monolayer FePc and hollow N,S-doped carbon spheres (HNSCs) are innovatively constructed through π-π stacking to achieve high dispersion. The resulting FePc@HNSC catalyst exhibits an outstanding ORR activity, outperforming that of pristine FePc and even most Fe-based catalysts reported to date. Moreover, the AAB using FePc@HNSC catalyst not only demonstrates a superior power density than the battery with Pt/C, but also displays stable discharge voltages and excellent durability. Furthermore, the theoretical calculations confirm that the charge distribution and d-band center of the Fe atom in FePc are efficiently optimized by hybrid configuration via the introduction of N,S-doped carbon substrate. The design leads to an enriched electron density around Fe active sites and significant reduction of energy barrier for OH* formation, which are favorable for the improvement of electrocatalytic ORR performance. This work provides a chance to expand the application of metallic macrocyclic compound electrocatalysts in various energy technologies.

Objective Understanding the origins of Aboriginal Australians is crucial in reconstructing the evolution and spread of Homo sapiens as evidence suggests they represent the descendants of the earliest group to leave Africa. This study analyzed a large sample of Y-chromosomes to answer questions relating to the migration routes of their ancestors, the age of Y-haplogroups, date of colonization, as well as the extent of male-specific variation. Methods Knowledge of Y-chromosome variation among Aboriginal Australians is extremely limited. This study examined Y-SNP and Y-STR variation among 657 self-declared Aboriginal males from locations across the continent. 17 Y-STR loci and 47 Y-SNPs spanning the Y-chromosome phylogeny were typed in total. Results The proportion of non-indigenous Y-chromosomes of assumed Eurasian origin was high, at 56%. Y lineages of indigenous Sahul origin belonged to haplogroups C-M130*(xM8,M38,M217,M347) (1%), C-M347 (19%), K-M526*(xM147,P308,P79,P261,P256,M231,M175,M45,P202) (12%), S-P308 (12%), and M-M186 (0.9%). Haplogroups C-M347, K-M526*, and S-P308 are Aboriginal Australian-specific. Dating of C-M347, K-M526*, and S-P308 indicates that all are at least 40,000 years old, confirming their long-term presence in Australia. Haplogroup C-M347 comprised at least three sub-haplogroups: C-DYS390.1del, C-M210, and the unresolved paragroup C-M347*(xDYS390.1del,M210). Conclusions There was some geographic structure to the Y-haplogroup variation, but most haplogroups were present throughout Australia. The age of the Australian-specific Y-haplogroups suggests New Guineans and Aboriginal Australians have been isolated for over 30,000 years, supporting findings based on mitochondrial DNA data. Our data support the hypothesis of more than one route (via New Guinea) for males entering Sahul some 50,000 years ago and give no support for colonization events during the Holocene, from either India or elsewhere. Absorbers for visible and near-infrared light are realized by depositing a thin iron layer on arrays of cones which are replicated from a porous template. The replicated conic structure itself is of several micrometers and ineffective at antireflection, but the subsequent deposition of iron on top generates nano-meter-size columnar structures, and thus broadband absorption enhancement is achieved.

We have examined the male-specific phylogeography of the Levant and its surroundings by analyzing Y-chromosomal haplogroup distributions using 5,874 samples (885 new) from 23 countries. The diversity within some of these haplogroups was also examined. The Levantine populations showed clustering in SNP and STR analyses when considered against a broad Middle-East and North African background. However, we also found a coastal-inland, east-west pattern of diversity and frequency distribution in several haplogroups within the small region of the Levant. Since estimates of effective population size are similar in the two regions, this strong pattern is likely to have arisen mainly from differential migrations, with different lineages introduced from the east and west.

In this paper, an optimization method of tuning decentralized PI/PID controllers based on genetic algorithms is presented. First, the existence of decentralized PI controllers with integrity is examined. Then, stable regions of each PI/PID controller parameters are calculated as the feasible area to be exploited, and the optimal PI/PID controllers are obtained by using a real-coded genetic algorithm with elitist strategy, to meet the design specifications for the whole control system. The proposed method is applied to six examples from literature. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed decentralized PI control is compatible to the referenced method while the decentralized PID control is better than the referenced method, and the proposed method is feasible for more complicated control systems optimizations.

Segmental duplications are unusually abundant in the human genome, perhaps because they carry genes whose amplification has been selectively advantageous during primate and human evolution. Their presence leads to genome instability, and so they are associated with genomic disorders, but they are also involved in the continuing evolution of the genome, for example by leading to increases in gene product, variant gene copies and fusion genes.
