Although CH 2 FCl (HCFC-31) recently became of great atmospheric importance, studies concerning its excited states are almost nonexistent. Several excited singlet states were studied (valence nσ* and Rydberg n3s, n3p, σ3s, and σ3p) through highly correlated multireference configuration interaction with singles and doubles, including extensivity correction. Comparison with the states of CH 3 Cl indicates a strong influence of the F atom. Potential energy curves suggest formation of an electrostatically bound complex that relaxes to a hydrogen-bonded contact ion-pair (HBCIP) which can decay yielding CH 2 F + Cl or to the ground state minimum of CH 2 FCl. The HBCIP has a dipole moment of 9.57 D, a CI wavefunction described as 0.65ionic + 0.20biradical and it is strongly bonded by 4.72 eV. Its H bond has characteristics of moderate and strong H bonds. We describe the distinctive features (with images and video) of a case of chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) with giant nerves. The main clinical findings were insidious onset, gait ataxia and sensory symptoms. Electrodiagnostic studies showed very slow nerve conduction velocities, multiple conduction blocks, distal CMAP duration increase and absence of F-waves. The protein level in the cerebrospinal fluid was very high. Nerve ultrasound showed swelling of all peripheral nerves outside entrapment sites, with significant variability within different segments of the same nerve; nerves were massively enlarged (up to 10-fold normal values). Brain MRI showed hypertrophic cranial nerves, with gadolinium-enhancement. Spinal MRI showed hypertrophy of spinal roots and cauda equine, with gadolinium enhancement. Genetic test (PMP22 duplication/deletion, Whole Exome Sequencing panel for neuropathies) resulted negative. The patient had a relapsing-remitting course and responded to immunoglobulin treatment. In CIDP with hypertrophic nerves, there is discrepancy between severe nerve hypertrophy and mild clinical symptoms. Objective: Hearing loss is a highly disabling condition. Cochlear implantation is an established remedy if conventional hearing aids have failed to alleviate the level of disability. Unfortunately, cochlear implant (CI) performance varies dramatically. This study aims to examine the effects of duration of deafness (DoD) prior to cochlear implantation and the postoperative duration of implant experience with resulting hearing performance in postlingually deaf patients., Methods: A systematic literature review and two meta-analyses were conducted using the search terms cochlear implant AND duration deafness . Included studies evaluate the correlation between the DoD and auditory performance after cochlear implantation using monosyllabic and sentence tests. Correlation coefficients were determined using Pearson's correlation and Spearman rho., Results: A total of 36 studies were identified and included data on cochlear implantations following postlingual deafness and postoperative speech testing of hearing outcomes for 1802 patients. The mean age ranged from 44 to 68 years with a DoD of 0.1 to 77 years. Cochlear implant use varied from 3 months to 14 years of age. Speech perception, which was assessed by sentence and monosyllabic word perception, was negatively correlated with DoD. Subgroup analyses revealed worse outcomes for longer DoD and shorter postoperative follow-up., Conclusion: DoD is one of the most important factors to predict speech perception after cochlear implantation in postlingually deaf patients. The meta-analyses revealed a negative correlation between length of auditory deprivation and postoperative sentence and monosyllabic speech perception. A number of model Diels-Alder (D-A) cycloaddition reactions (H2C=CH2 + cyclopentadiene and H2C=CHX + 1,3-butadiene, with X = H, F, CH3, OH, CN, NH2, and NO) were studied by static (transition state - TS and IRC) and dynamics (quasiclassical trajectories) approaches to establish the (a)synchronous character of the concerted mechanism. The use of static criteria, such as the asymmetry of the TS geometry, for classifying and quantifying the (a)synchronicity of the concerted D-A reaction mechanism is shown to be severely limited and to provide contradictory results and conclusions when compared to the dynamics approach. The time elapsed between the events is shown to be a more reliable and unbiased criterion and all the studied D-A reactions, except for the case of H2C=CHNO, are classified as synchronous, despite the gradual and quite distinct degrees of (a)symmetry of the TS structures., (© 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

The UV-induced photochemistry of HCFC-132b (CF2 ClCH2 Cl) was investigated by computing excited-state properties with time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT), multiconfigurational second-order perturbation theory (CASPT2), and coupled cluster with singles, doubles, and perturbative triples (CCSD(T)). Excited states calculated with TDDFT show good agreement with CASPT2 and CCSD(T) results, correctly predicting the main excited-states properties. Simulations of ultrafast nonadiabatic dynamics in the gas phase were performed, taking into account 25 electronic states at TDDFT level starting in two different spectral windows (8.5 ± 0.25 and 10.0 ± 0.25 eV). Experimental data measured at 123.6 nm (10 eV) is in very good agreement with our simulations. The excited-state lifetimes are 106 and 191 fs for the 8.5 and 10.0 eV spectral windows, respectively. Internal conversion to the ground state occurred through several different reaction pathways with different products, where 2Cl, C-Cl bond breakage, and HCl are the main photochemical pathways in the low-excitation region, representing 95% of all processes. MR-CISD, MR-CISD+Q, and MR-AQCC calculations have been performed on the minima and transition states (corresponding to intramolecular proton transfer between the protonation sites) of the ground state of protonated nitrosamine and N,N-dimethylnitrosamine. Our highest level results (MR-AQCC/cc-pVTZ) for the smaller system indicate that protonation on the N amino (2a) is practically as favorable as the most favorable protonation on the O atom (1a). They also suggest that protonation on the nitroso N atom (2c) is ∼14.5 kcal/mol less favorable than 1a. Results obtained at the MR-CISD+Q/cc-pVTZ level indicate that the effect of methylation on the relative energies of the tautomers is, in order of importance, 2a > 2c and increases their energies by ∼17.5 and 4.8 kcal/mol, respectively. They also indicate that methylation alters significantly the intramolecular proton transfer barriers. Complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) and multireference CI with singles and doubles (MR-CISD) calculations [including extensivity corrections, at MR-CISD+Q and multireference averaged quadratic coupled cluster (MR-AQCC) levels] have been performed to characterize the low-lying valence and the Rydberg states of 2H-tetrazole. The highest level results (MR-AQCC/d'-aug'-cc-pVDZ) indicate the following ordering of the valence singlet excited states: S(1) (n-pi*), 6.06 eV; S(2) (n-pi*), 6.55 eV; S(3) (pi-pi*), 6.55 eV. The MR-CISD+Q/d'-aug'-cc-pVDZ results indicate the same ordering, but at slight higher energies: 6.16, 6.68, and 6.69 eV, respectively. According to our MR-CISD+Q/d'-aug'-cc-pVDZ results, the next two states are Rydberg states, at 7.69 eV (pi-3s) and 7.89 eV (n-3s). The calculated energies of these two states, as well as their proximity, are consistent with the conclusion reached by Palmer and Beveridge (Chem Phys 1987, 111, 249) that the first band of the photoelectron spectrum of 2H-tetrazole is likely to be associated to the first two ionizations processes (of pi and N lone pair electrons), at energies close to 11.3 eV., (2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

The metabolic effects of selected and branched-chain amino acid (BCAA)-enriched parenteral solutions were studied in liver cirrhosis. After 3 days of an oral protein-free diet with balanced amino acid (AA) infusion, 36 cirrhotic patients without encephalopathy were randomly divided into four groups. Groups A and B were infused for 5 days with BCAA (valine, leucine, isoleucine) at doses of 0.5 and 1.0 g/kg/day, respectively, as the only nitrogen source. Group C received 0.8 g/kg of essential and nonessential AA solution with a prevalence of BCAA; the last group (D) continued the basic standard diet, as control. Routine chemistry, urinary nitrogen losses, nitrogen balance, and the whole plasma AA pattern were detected before and after the treatment period. BCAA alone led to an impressive and significant improvement in the basic AA pattern in both the A and B groups. The same results were obtained in group C for plasma AA. In particular, the ratio of BCAA to aromatic amino acids in groups A, B, and C was significantly increased (p less than 0.01, less than 0.02, less than 0.02, respectively). In group D the AA pattern and the BCAA/aromatic amino acid ratio remained unchanged. The negative nitrogen balance of the base state remained unchanged after 0.5 g of BCAA (A); it improved significantly and became positive during and after the infusions of a double dose of BCAA (B), as it did in the case of selective solutions (C), although to a lesser extent; the negative nitrogen balance of the control group showed only a slight improvement.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
