Abstract Electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) is a sustainable alternative to the Haber‒Bosch process for ammonia (NH3) production. However, the significant uphill energy in the multistep NRR pathway is a bottleneck for favorable serial reactions. To overcome this challenge, we designed a vanadium oxide/nitride (V2O3/VN) hybrid electrocatalyst in which V2O3 and VN coexist coherently at the heterogeneous interface. Since single‐phase V2O3 and VN exhibit different surface catalytic kinetics for NRR, the V2O3/VN hybrid electrocatalyst can provide alternating reaction pathways, selecting a lower energy pathway for each material in the serial NRR pathway. As a result, the ammonia yield of the V2O3/VN hybrid electrocatalyst was 219.6 µg h−1 cm−2, and the Faradaic efficiency was 18.9%, which is much higher than that of single‐phase VN, V2O3, and VNxOy solid solution catalysts without heterointerfaces. Density functional theory calculations confirmed that the composition of these hybrid electrocatalysts allows NRR to proceed from a multistep reduction reaction to a low‐energy reaction pathway through the migration and adsorption of intermediate species. Therefore, the design of metal oxide/nitride hybrids with coherent heterointerfaces provides a novel strategy for synthesizing highly efficient electrochemical catalysts that induce steps favorable for the efficient low‐energy progression of NRR.

Abstract 2D materials are regarded as promising electrocatalysts for water splitting because of their advances in providing ample active sites and improving electrochemical reaction kinetics. 2D MoSe2 has a greater intrinsic electrical conductivity and lower Gibbs free energy for reactant adsorption. However, there is still room for improvement in the electrocatalytic performance of MoSe2 for high‐performance electrochemical water splitting devices. Herein, the in situ preparation of heterostructure made of covalently bonded MoSe2 and rGO is reported. The obtained electrocatalyst contains the aggregated 3D structured MoSe2 over rGO, which is covalently bonded together with more edge sites. The active edge sites of MoSe2/rGO are dynamically involved in the electrocatalytic activity while facilitating electron transfer. Hence, the MoSe2/rGO heterostructure requires a low cell voltage of 1.64 V to reach 100 mA cm−2 in water splitting with high reaction kinetics. The aggregated MoSe2 over rGO with more edge sites exposed by the 3D structure of MoSe2 and the interfacial covalent bond in between them provides a favorable electronic structure for the HER and OER with low overpotentials and high current densities and enhances the stability of the electrocatalyst. This work presents an attractive and cost‐effective electrocatalyst suitable for industrial‐scale hydrogen fuel production.

Abstract Background Amplification of the 3q region has been identified as a useful biomarker for the diagnosis and treatment of squamous cell carcinoma (SqCC). This region contains genes such as PIK3CA and YEATS2, which have been linked to the prognosis of SqCC. Methods The NanoString nCounter assay is a powerful tool for identifying genetic alterations that affect the progression and prognosis of SqCC. The NanoString nCounter assay was used to identify a subgroup of patients with gene level gain in the 3q region. Results Gene level gain in the 3q region was more frequent in SqCC than in adenocarcinoma. We found that genes such as PIK3CA and YEATS2 in the 3q region were associated with the prognosis of SqCC. Therefore, identifying a subgroup of patients with gene level gain in the 3q region using the NanoString nCounter assay can aid in selecting appropriate treatment options and improving prognostic predictions for SqCC patients. Conclusion Amplification of the 3q region in SqCC of lung cancer is a useful biomarker for diagnosis and treatment. The NanoString nCounter assay is a powerful tool for identifying specific genetic alterations that affect the progression and prognosis of SqCC. Our study highlights the importance 3q amplification and its associated genes in lung cancer.

Abstract Lead‐acid batteries (LABs) are widely used as a power source in many applications due to their affordability, safety, and recyclability. However, as the demand for better electrochemical energy storage increases in various fields, there is a growing need for more advanced battery technologies. To meet this need, the application of LABs in hybrid electric vehicles and renewable energy storage has been explored, and the development of lead–carbon batteries (LCBs) has garnered significant attention as a promising solution. LCBs incorporate carbon materials in the negative electrode, successfully addressing the negative irreversible sulfation issue that plagues traditional LABs. Composite material additives and Pb–C composite electrodes have also gained popularity as effective ways to enhance negative electrode performance. This review article focuses on the role of carbon additives in the negative electrode of LCBs and discusses potential future additives that may be incorporated into the development of LCBs. Overall, this article provides insights into the potential of LCBs to offer more efficient and reliable energy storage.

Abstract Efficient and cost‐effective electrocatalysts that can operate across a wide range of pH conditions are essential for green hydrogen production. Inspired by biological systems, Fe7S8 nanoparticles incorporated on polydopamine matrix electrocatalyst were synthesized by co‐precipitation and annealing process. The resulting Fe7S8/C electrocatalyst possesses a three‐dimensional structure and exhibits enhanced electrocatalytic performance for hydrogen production across various pH conditions. Notably, the Fe7S8/C electrocatalyst demonstrates exceptional activity, achieving low overpotentials of 90.6, 45.9, and 107.4 mV in acidic, neutral, and alkaline environments, respectively. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy reveals that Fe7S8/C exhibits the lowest charge transfer resistance under neutral conditions, indicating an improved proton‐coupled electron transfer process. Continuous‐wave electron paramagnetic resonance results confirm a change in the valence state of Fe from 3+ to 1+ during the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). These findings closely resemble the behavior of natural [FeFe]‐hydrogenase, known for its superior hydrogen production in neutral conditions. The remarkable performance of our Fe7S8/C electrocatalyst opens up new possibilities for utilizing bioinspired materials as catalysts for the HER.

Abstract A versatile use of a sulfur self‐doped biochar derived from Camellia japonica (camellia) flowers is demonstrated as a multifunctional catalyst for overall water splitting and a supercapacitor. The native sulfur content in the camellia flower facilitates in situ self‐doping of sulfur, which highly activates the camellia‐driven biochar (SA‐Came) as a multifunctional catalyst with the enhanced electron‐transfer ability and long‐term durability. For water splitting, an SA‐Came‐based electrode is highly stable and shows reaction activities in both hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions, with overpotentials of 154 and 362 mV at 10 mA cm−2, respectively. For supercapacitors, SA‐Came achieves a specific capacitance of 125.42 F g−1 at 2 A g−1 and high cyclic stability in a three‐electrode system in a 1 M KOH electrolyte. It demonstrated a high energy density of 34.54 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 1600 W kg−1 as a symmetric hybrid supercapacitor device with a wide working potential range of 0–1.6 V.

Abstract One‐in‐four ophthalmology trials are single‐armed, which poses challenges to their interpretation. We demonstrate how real‐world cohorts used as external/synthetic control arms can contextualize such trials. We herein emulated a target trial on the intention‐to‐treat efficacy of off‐label bevacizumab (q6w) pro re nata relative to fixed‐interval aflibercept (q8w) for improving week 54 visual acuity of eyes affected by neovascular age‐related macular degeneration. The bevacizumab arm (n = 65) was taken from the ABC randomized controlled trial. A total of 4,471 aflibercept‐treated eyes aligning with the ABC trial eligibility were identified from electronic health records and synthetic control arms were created by emulating randomization conditional on age, sex, and baseline visual read via exact matching and propensity score methods. We undertook an inferiority analysis on mean difference at 54 weeks; outcomes regression on achieving a change in visual acuity of greater than or equal to 15, greater than or equal to 10, and less than or equal to −15 Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy (ETDRS) letters at week 54; and a time‐to‐event analysis on achieving a change in visual acuity of greater than or equal to 15, greater than or equal to 10, and less than or equal to −15 ETDRS letters by week 54. The findings suggest off‐label bevacizumab to be neither inferior nor superior to licensed aflibercept. Our study highlights how real‐world cohorts representing the counterfactual intervention could aid the interpretation of single‐armed trials when analyzed in accord to the target trial framework. Abstract Tyrosinase‐mediated melanin synthesis is an essential biological process that can protect skin from UV radiation and radical species. This work reports on in situ biosynthesis of artificial melanin in native skin using photoactivatable tyrosinase (PaTy). The I41Y mutant of Streptomyces avermitilis tyrosinase (SaTy) shows enzymatic activity comparable to that of wild‐type SaTy. This Y41 is replaced with photocleavable o‐nitrobenzyl tyrosine (ONBY) using the introduction of amber codon and ONBY‐tRNA synthetase/tRNA pairs. The ONBY efficiently blocks the active site and tyrosinase activity is rapidly recovered by the photo‐cleavage of ONBY. The activated PaTy successfully oxidizes L‐tyrosine and tyramine‐conjugated hyaluronic acid (HA_T) to synthesize melanin particles and hydrogel, respectively. To produce artificial melanin in living tissues, PaTy is encapsulated into lipid nanoparticles as an artificial melanosome. Using liposomes containing PaTy (PaTy_Lip), PaTy is transdermally delivered into ex vivo porcine skin and in vivo mouse skin tissues, thus achieving the in situ biosynthesis of artificial melanin for skin tissue protection under UV irradiation. The results of this study demonstrate that this biomimetic system can recapitulate the biosynthetic analogs of naturally occurring melanin. It should therefore be considered to be a promising strategy for producing protective biological molecules within living systems for tissue protection.

Abstract In the case of a cat bite patient, even if the external wound is small, prophylactic antibiotics should be used early and a closed observation is needed. If symptoms persist, deep infection should be considered.
