A series of platinum(II) calix[4]arene-based molecular tweezers was synthesized. The studies of the host-guest association with a charge-neutral cyclometalated platinum(II) complex showed a drastic color change and the turning on of near-infrared emission resulting from Pt⋅⋅⋅Pt and π-π interactions. Control of the host-guest assembly process by varying the solvent composition can lead to a change from discrete host and guest molecules to high-ordered host-guest oligomers with the formation of sheet-like nanostructures, demonstrating a rare example of three-state supramolecular host-guest system with high solubility in solvents of diverse polarity. The change in host-guest assembly behaviors could be probed by drastic color changes from yellow to orange to green. The present study provides insights into the systematic design of solvent-responsive molecular materials using molecular tweezers-directed host-guest assembly, with potential applications in colorimetric sensing of changes in the micro-environment.

Adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) are a type of mesenchymal stem cells isolated from adipose tissue and have the ability to differentiate into adipogenic, osteogenic, and chondrogenic lineages. Despite their great therapeutic potentials, previous studies showed that ADSCs could enhance the proliferation and metastatic potential of breast cancer cells (BCCs). In this study, we found that ADSCs fused with BCCs spontaneously, while breast cancer stem cell (CSC) markers CD44+ CD24-/low EpCAM+ were enriched in this fusion population. We further assessed the fusion hybrid by multicolor DNA FISH and mouse xenograft assays. Only single nucleus was observed in the fusion hybrid, confirming that it was a synkaryon. In vivo mouse xenograft assay indicated that the tumorigenic potential of the fusion hybrid was significantly higher than that of the parent tumorigenic triple-negative BCC line MDA-MB-231. We had compared the fusion efficiency between two BCC lines, the CD44-rich MDA-MB-231 and the CD44-poor MCF-7, with ADSCs. Interestingly, we found that the fusion efficiency was much higher between MDA-MB-231 and ADSCs, suggesting that a potential mechanism of cell fusion may lie in the dissimilarity between these two cell lines. The cell fusion efficiency was hampered by knocking down the CD44. Altogether, our findings suggest that CD44-mediated cell fusion could be a potential mechanism for generating CSCs.

A diversity of place-based community economic practices that enact ethical interdependence has long enabled livelihoods in Monsoon Asia. Managed either democratically or coercively, these culturally inflected practices have survived the rise of a cash economy, albeit in modified form, sometimes being co-opted to state projects. In the modern development imaginary, these practices have been positioned as traditional', rural' and largely superseded. But if we read against the grain of modernisation, a largely hidden geography of community economic practices emerges. This paper introduces the project of documenting keywords of place-based community economies in Monsoon Asia. It extends Raymond William's cultural analysis of keywords into a non-western context and situates this discursive approach within a material semiotic framing. The paper has been collaboratively written with co-researchers across Southeast Asia and represents an experimental mode of scholarship that aims to advance a post-development agenda.

Multi-stimuli-responsive tetranuclear gold(I) complexes were prepared based on a tetra(alkynyl)calix[4]arene framework, with incorporation of a series of isocyanide ligands of tunable hydrophilicity. This class of complex was found to exhibit high sensitivity towards group IIIA metal ions especially In3+ . Drastic electronic absorption and emission changes were observed, which could be attributed to the formation of AuI ⋅⋅⋅AuI interactions during the binding event. Solvent-induced self-aggregation was also observed upon changing the solvent environment to a more polar medium, with the formation of nanoaggregates and the turning-on of the aurophilic interactions, leading to interesting luminescence and morphological changes. The aggregation process was monitored by UV/Vis absorption, emission and 1 H NMR spectroscopy and dynamic light scattering (DLS) studies, and the morphological changes were studied by electron microscopy. This new class of complex has shown high sensitivity towards external stimuli and demonstrated the feasibility of employing the on-off switching of aurophilicity as an effective design strategy for the construction of functional supramolecular systems.

Fabric-based microfluidic fuel cells (MFCs) serve as a novel, cost-efficient alternative to traditional FCs and batteries, since fluids naturally travel across fabric via capillary action, eliminating the need for an external pump and lowering production and operation costs. Building on previous research with Y-shaped paper-based MFCs, fabric-based MFCs mitigate fragility and durability issues caused by long periods of fuel immersion. In this study, we describe a microfluidic fabric-based direct formate fuel cell, with 5 M potassium formate and 30% hydrogen peroxide as the anode fuel and cathode oxidant, respectively. Using a two-strip, stacked design, the optimized parameters include the type of encasement, the barrier, and the fabric type. Surface contact of the fabric and laminate sheet expedited flow and respective chemical reactions. The maximum current (22.83 mA/cm2 ) and power (4.40 mW/cm2 ) densities achieved with a 65% cotton/35% polyester blend material are a respective 8.7% and 32% higher than previous studies with Y-shaped paper-based MFCs. In series configuration, the MFCs generate sufficient energy to power a handheld calculator, a thermometer, and a spectrum of light-emitting diodes.

Participatory methods are a common approach for giving voice to local communities in hazard and disaster research. Drawing on a study that trialled and modified a range of participatory methods in North Sulawesi, eastern Indonesia, this paper reflects on how such methods help document the capacities of small island communities. We assessed capacity from a sustainable livelihoods perspective, identifying the assets that enable villagers to cope with hazards. This overall approach promoted a discourse of strengths and resourcefulness, contrasting with vulnerability and needs-assessment approaches common to government and non-governmental organizations, which tend to focus on weaknesses and can sometimes fuel undeliverable expectations of funding. We provide a critical reflection on participatory methods and their significance for researchers, policy makers and funding agencies working with communities in hazard-prone regions.

The efficiency roll-off in blue phosphorescent organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) using different carbazole compounds as the host is systematically studied. While there is no significant difference in device efficiency, OLEDs using ter-carbazole as the host show a reduction in efficiency roll-off at high luminance. Data from transient photoluminescence and electroluminescence measurements show that the lower triplet–triplet annihilation (TTA) and triplet–polaron quenching (TPQ) rates in devices with the ter-carbazole host compared with other carbazole hosts are the reasons for this reduced efficiency roll-off. It is also found that the host materials with low glass transition temperatures are more susceptible to the efficiency roll-off problem.

Solution-processed inorganic UV-visible short-wave-infrared photodetectors with light sensitivity from 350 nm to 2000 nm are fabricated using highly monodispersed large PbS NCs. These devices showed detectivity values over 1 × 10(11) Jones from 350 nm to 2000 nm, and a maximum detectivity value of 1.2 × 10(12) Jones at 1800 nm.

Quasi-2D Ruddlesden-Popper halide perovskites with a large exciton binding energy, self-assembled quantum wells, and high quantum yield draw attention for optoelectronic device applications. Thin films of these quasi-2D perovskites consist of a mixture of domains having different dimensionality, allowing energy funneling from lower-dimensional nanosheets (high-bandgap domains) to 3D nanocrystals (low-bandgap domains). High-quality quasi-2D perovskite (PEA)2 (FA)3 Pb4 Br13 films are fabricated by solution engineering. Grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering measurements are conducted to study the crystal orientation, and transient absorption spectroscopy measurements are conducted to study the charge-carrier dynamics.
