1. 'Feeding Hungry Children': the growth of charitable breakfast clubs and holiday hunger projects in the UK

Abstract

This paper reports the findings of a recent scoping study on the nature, evidence base and policy context of breakfast clubs and school holiday projects in the UK and aims to do three things. Firstly, bring child feeding initiatives firmly into the critical food and poverty debate. Secondly, critically assess the state of evidence on these projects and their perceived role in the lives of children at risk of, or experiencing, poverty. Thirdly, set out the next steps which will be required to build a systematic body of research on child feeding projects within the food and poverty research agenda.

27. Indigenous youth reconnect with cultural identity: The evaluation of a community- and school-based traditional music program.

Abstract

Reconnecting Indigenous youth with their cultural traditions has been identified as an essential part of healing the intergenerational effects of forced assimilation policies. Past work suggests that learning the music of one's culture can foster cultural identity and community bonding, which may serve as protective factors for well-being. An 8-week traditional song and dance program was implemented in a school setting for Indigenous youth. An evaluation was conducted using a mixed-method design to determine the impact of the program on 35 youth in the community. A triangulation of qualitative and quantitative data revealed several important themes, including personal development, cultural development, social development, student engagement in school-based programming, and perpetuating cultural knowledge. The program provided students with an opportunity to connect with their cultural traditions through activities that encouraged self and cultural expression. Community responses suggested that this type of programming is highly valued among Indigenous communities., (© 2020 Wiley Periodicals LLC.)

Abstract

Problem: Little of clinical relevance has been derived from research studies conducted on seclusion and restraint. Most studies elicit staff, as opposed to patient, views of the restraint event., Methods: Content analysis, descriptive statistics of debriefing incidents (N = 81) following the initiation of seclusion and restraint from both patient and staff perspectives., Findings: Patients and staff had varied views of the restraint incidents, but overall they were closer in their perceptions of precipitants and what could have been done to prevent the incident., Conclusions: Debriefing incidents can be used as learning tools for staff and patients, to track staff and patient progress, and as a way to change the culture of psychiatric settings.
